This 9-wood vs 5-hybrid video features a comparison of a PING G430 Max 9-wood and a PING G430 5-hybrid. More and more golfers today are being fit into high-lofted fairway woods, such as a 7-wood or a 9-wood, in 2nd Swing Tour Van fittings than ever before. But why is that? Should you be playing a 9-wood?

  1. 9 wood is more comparable to a 4 hybrid isnt it? I carry a 5h and 9w and they gap perfectly. 190 carry 5h, 200 carry 9w. Originally went 9w bc my 4h wasn't flying much further than my 5h.

  2. I at 71 years old have gone to10.5 sim 2 max, 16* stealth 3 wood, 20 degree callaway heavenwood, 23 * stealth hd hybrid. Seems to work pretty good with my 5-pw Mizuno 919 hot metal then 50, 54, 58 wedges.

  3. Can attest about the height. As a low spin low launcher of the ball, I hit my G430 9 and 7w a good 20ft higher than any other club in my bag.

  4. This is a great comparison but I’d like to see this using someone with a slower swing speed such as a senior player. I think they would be a better target for this option.

  5. Just fyi, Ping's website states the "Equivalent Fairway" to 4 hybrid is 9-wood, so 5-hybrid seems to be the wrong comp to 9-wood … as per Ping directly.

  6. Dynamic loft at 15 – 17 degrees on a 5 hybrid? and 9 wood? I bet most target customers would not deloft them that much. Hard to judge.

  7. Had a 9 wood g430 was too steep on it and always felt I was going to sky it. Didn't give me confidence unfortunately. My 7wood g430 I love it can't see that going anywhere.

  8. Don’t sleep on the 9 wood. I hit mine 205ish yards and it flies high and drops like a dart. Favorite club in the bag. Has made long par 3s so fun

  9. I am 50 years old and still hit the ball semi long for my age, and I will never go back to Irons where i have a choice. Right now I am representing a
    Driver-5.5*
    3 wd-12*
    5 wd-17.5
    7 wd-22.5
    9 wd-27*
13 wd-31* and even the 13 wood I still hit it to replace my 6 iron 205 yard area. I can deal with 7 iron up to lob wedge, no problem.

  10. I just added the g430 7 wood x stiff 70g shaft. All I can say is … wow! Towering 200 yrd golf shot that drop on a dime. I'm looking at the 9 wood differently.

  11. I have both in the bag currently. I think a 6hy might better fill the 6i to 9w gap, but the 5hy works on the random shots I need it. Haven’t needed a 6i or 5hy for some rounds now tbh. It’s either driver wedge or driver fairway wedge. No 190+ yard par 3s where I play.

  12. Unless you’ve the swing speed to carry a modern 5 iron at least 185 yards with a good decent angle, go hybrid or 9 wood.

  13. I have the Ping G430 hybrid. Great club although I do have it set on the FLAT setting as I too was seeing a lot of the left side of the fairway. The flat setting sorted it out.

  14. I replaced my hybrid with that same 9w and it goes farther and straighter. My other is a 5w same model.

  15. I have a 425 9w head cranked down to 22* with a 5W shaft in it. Easier to hit than a 7w with the same distance. I hit it 200/210. Its a great club for me.

  16. My Tight Lies 7w is 24 degrees and have used it as my 185 yd club. Now also have a Big Bertha OS 5h that I have set to 26 degrees and it’s about 10-15 yds less.

  17. Big fan of my 7 wood and 9 wood. No more hybrids in the bag. The woods give me the height to stick a green. Wondering if a 17* hybrid would be better than my 4 wood for total distance.
