Neil Treacy is joined by Bernard Jackman on the RTÉ Rugby podcast as we look ahead to the meeting of Ireland and New Zealand at Aviva Stadium on Friday night.
We look at Ireland’s team selection, which relies heavily on experience (8:00), and we look at how Andy Farrell appears to be no closer to figuring out the long-term plans at prop (15:20).
Bernard breaks down down the discipline issues both sides have been dealing with in 2024 (28:35), and the role Johnny Sexton will have with Ireland’s out-halves (32:20).
We also examine the new law interpretation around kick-chase blockers, and what impact that has had on the game in recent weeks (37:35), and how Ireland can look to take advantage of one particular player in the New Zealand backfield (42:50).

Bear in mind Porter was a tight head and was moved across already. So Healy is still the main loosehead that has come thru the system from early on.
Can Irish media stop talking about the next poxy World cup. The Lions tour hasn't even happened yet.
Great stuff lads!
If it’s a big match, use your big players. Most teams do this if playing an equal side. You want to win. There are very positive signs for the future, with some great talent coming up the Irish system. The time to try new talent is against weaker teams and gradually introduce them to more serious test matches. Just my thoughts on listening to Bernard.. 👍
We need a national breakfast roll campaign to produce more props.
The IRFU has always has a conservative culture regarding selection and has obviously communicated this to Farrell, who is in any case conservatively inclined and heavily invested in squad cohesion. The main expression of this mentality is the mad notion that absolutely ever game must be won or the sky will fall in. By contrast, Erasmus is far more willing to experiment and now has far more depth in every position compared to Ireland, albeit with a much larger pool of players. It's time for a serious rethink if we're not to tank yet again at the next world cup.
That’s funny jackman kick to superstar Jordan and not expect damage.. we’ll see how that works out 😀
Ther will come a point wher we will have sacrifice a six nations campaign or odd test series to expose players to that pace of game, that's what previous world cup winners have done looking at the whole four year cycle and timing it properly to the run into a world cup
Porter is very a good player. But he is an expensive commodity. His scrummaging technique is certainly questionable since he moved to loosehead. To me he seems to have an average of 3 penalties per game. That's just to expensive in my opinion. We don't have a choice right now but somebody needs to speak to him…..
Think all this talk about not bringing in young players is just trying to find a talking point. Osborne was brought through really well, don’t see any reason not to play the strongest 23 for this game. Definitely do need to start looking at props for the future soon though, but overall, feeling pretty positive with the talent coming through; Baird, Casey, Osborne, Sheehan, Doris, Ahern, McCarthy – just to name a few, all have many many years of rugby in them. Don’t forget, players like JGP, Lowe, etc, weren’t discovered till their late 20s. All this without mentioning Prendergast, who looks a serious talent. Just my opinion. Interested to read other takes.
I like the level of hype for this one. Far less non-sense for the media to feed off and throw a strop.
The Kiwi lads are starved of stuff to be outraged at having to resort to "Sexton vs Ioane" and the whole Sam Cane thing which were both pathetic at the time let alone years later.
Dont agree with rushing players because it can cause more harm then good. Look at the injury profiles of henshaw and ringrose. Anyway shane bolton was called up but got injured. Hugh gavin is like sbw but you dont have to rush these players you just have to wait for the right time when you already gave a good first team
The shift to in-house content is very noticeable
someone is a bit cocky …. lol AB's by 2 scores
over the past 10 years we have reached number 1 in the world a few times, and mix it consistently with the very best in the world like SA, NZ etc trading wins and so on
And what do you get for that effort is pundits on podcasts inventing problems. Now the talking point is not trying younger players. FFS thank F* the IRFU and the coaches and staff involved in all this success don't listen to this shite.
healy is extra valuable for his ability to slot in at hooker with kelleher and herring both just off injury. as the president of the unofficial dennis buckley fan club its tough to understand how he hasn't been called in for his first cap, even just as a stop gap solution, while some of the younger lads get up to speed.
jack boyle looks promising at LH. aungier, clarkson, o'toole and scott wilson all looked promising but seem to have regressed at TH. Jager is the obvious solution but his injury profile is troubling.
HOPE WE DON'T GET AN ENGLISH REF…….
All Blacks by 12 I think. 🤷♂
Find someone else besides jackman. Tired of him
Bernhard Jackman never fails to keep my attention.🇿🇦
@jeramy576 Nah, disagree with that, I think he’s one of the best informed and def one of the best at explaining the technical details of the game. Also has great knowledge of what’s happening around the rugby world, and that’s from a non Leinster fan.
Why are we struggling to find props? Is it size and strength alone, or is it an unpopular position? Can anyone tell me please? Do we have any youngest coming through?
great pod lads. Jordan is a quality attacking FB for me.
Lot of people tipping Ireland but the scum is worrying for me. AB;s can explode at any time and this one will be close.I'm a pessimist about my own country always but my respect for this Irish team is very high. AB's have gotten a bit under our skins now too. We used be in awe of them but now we are as cranky as the Boks about them. I love it. Still have great respect for the AB's. They are building again and their attack created a lot against England. They could easily have scored two more tries at least. England will never beat them until they create more opportunities for tries. Penalties and drop goals wont beat them. When Ireland smell blood they go looking for the try line. I don't think Ireland would have let that 8 point lead slip like England did last week, England brought Ford in too early when Smith was having a blinder. They thought they could manage the game out.
If Tommy O'Brien can stay fit, he is a really fast winger for the future, and one that has impressed me when he plays.
Goin to be close test wont be a lot in it orish the real deal these days great for rugbygo abslookn forward to this oneespecially forward battle
Jackman knows there is a problem with the current Leinster scrum coach and he knows how much potential the Leinster props like Boyle and Paddy Mccarthy can have. An an influential figure in the Irish rugby media he should be calling this out
