I've watched all of your videos and your instructions have changed the way I play, think about and enjoy the game of golf! Bravo! I look forward to new videos always.
I know what I'll be practicing when my tennis elbow is sorted. Thanks David
Nice video. I love chip and run, bump and run, chip, whatever you call it. I still remember going to my club pro as a new playing 11 year old and asking how to play wedge shots around the green. He said "I'm not going to show you that, because that's not what you use most around the green. Get your 7 iron out of the bag (he knew I had a 3-5-7-9 half set). I'm going to show you how to chip." And he showed me this. Nowadays, that club would be a 9 iron. In adulthood, once my dad gave me his old Spalding full set, I found myself using an 8 iron on the slightly faster greens I was playing then. Nowadays, that's a pitching wedge. So those are the clubs I use now. 9 iron and PW. And I try to do pretty much what you showed here. Bit rusty after so many years off, but still basically works. Thanks for the video. Love the review and the reaffirmation that yes, this is the right thing to do.
I'm now an advocate of your 2-step rule; I find it really helps determine what club I use for chipping (based on Paul Runyan's rule of 12). I count the paces to the 2-step place on the green and then count the paces to the hole from there. There is slope and green speed to consider (of course) but it's simple then to choose the best club for me. (I'm not much of a fan of the putter or the hybrid but that's probably because I don't practice enough with them.)
I finished my par 3 round with a chip-in birdie today (though it was nearer to a Dan Grieve Release 2 than a chip and run).
I wish my misses were a few feet off the green! Sadly higher handicappers miss the green 15- 30 feet and the ball ends up in uneven rough. Most people can use a putter from just off the green first cut so there’s no need to chip it. I always practice chipping from the rough and sometimes a bogey is a fair result.
I really love your videos they are just so educational and full of common sense.
Great stuff David.
Another great video
Excellent video David. I tend to go to my 9i in that situation but will certainly try my 6 hybrid in practice to keep my options open. (BTW – lovely last shot!)
Love this one. Thank you
Excellent video. I like that you spent time on relevant focus rather than too much swing thoughts and techniques that tend to get complicated in the end. After all, you have a tool in your hands and a ball on the ground. Just get it close to the hole.
