Using a Wall to Improve Impact – John Hughes Golf

Have you ever thought about what a wall around the house can help you with? Particularly when the weather is not so good?

Back in 2020 when we’re going through the pandemic, John Hughes Golf produced a few videos about how you could continue to improve your golf skills despite having limited or no access to a golf course or golf practice area. Within one of those video tips, contained within the John Hughes Golf YouTube Channel John showed you how to use a doorway or wall inside or outside your house to continue to feel what a great impact position should feel like. Allowing you to say, “Hey, I’m in a great impact position!”

What does this drill do? Within this video, John explains in detail the benefits of using resistance, in the form of a wall or doorway, to heighten your awareness of your entire impact position. Not just what the club and hands feel like. It’s important to feel your the entire front side of your body engaged in this position. How stable and leveraged it feels. With your upper body have a slight lean towards your back leg, particularly when swinging a driver, allowing your head can stay behind the golf ball.

Another consideration of this drill is feeling as though you can quickly obtain this great impact position when using resistance. Avoiding a feel of lunging into the wall in front of you.

There are other props and swing aids you can use to obtain this great impact position, such as a chair or an alignment stick placed in front of you. With emphasis placed upon your ability to shift your weight and rotate as you swing, realizing a small amount of space between you and the obstacle assisting you with resistance.

This is a simple yet effective drill that prevents lateral sway occurring in your swing. And can be used you can use not only when practicing. But when playing too.
