In-depth breakdown of LSU-Arkansas
LSU proved to itself and the college football watching world that it can compete with some of the best talent in the country and emerge victorious.
While Saturday night’s performance was not the perfect blueprint to season long success, what this LSU team continues to prove week in and week out is that it’s fine with winning messy, tight games. But for that Ole Miss win to mean anything, the now No. 8 Tigers have to go on the road in the SEC for back-to-back weeks against dangerous teams.
It’s a situation not too dissimilar from two years ago, when LSU took down a top-10 Alabama team in overtime only to go on the road and have to win an absolute slugfest at Arkansas the very next weekend. While the Tigers survived, it took every ounce of energy to win that game and lost two weeks later to a four win Texas A&M team at the time.
The conversations around this week of preparation have already begun coming off such an exhilarating victory that kept the season long goals intact.
“We’re pretty transparent about what the current situation is relative to how they think. This team has some experience in terms of overall, having been through it and knowing what it looks like. But that doesn’t mean everybody understands how to think about it so we’ll talk about how they need to think going into this week of preparation,” Brian Kelly said. “This is where you lean on [Garrett] Nussmeier, [Whit] Weeks, Greg Penn and guys that have taken this trip and been part of it. Now that’s where you ask your veterans to really step up.”
Coincidentally, the Razorbacks and Aggies are the next two opponents on the schedule but Arkansas is the sole focus for the next few days of practice. This is a matchup that has been ugly for LSU in recent years because of the style in which it’s had to play. A tough, physical battle has resulted in just three point swings over the previous four contests and this year figures to be more of the same.
The word ‘trap game’ gets thrown around pretty loosely in college football. But the way the SEC has looked, particularly for teams having to go on the road, there are no ‘trap games’ on this schedule for LSU. This team needs to come out very prepared and execute at a much higher level than the last time they went on the road at South Carolina.
Arkansas coach Sam Pittman couldn’t have come into the year on a much hotter seat but week in and week out, his team has fought extremely hard for him. Dropping a close one to Texas A&M in its second SEC game of the year, the Razorbacks went on the road and defeated Auburn and most recently knocked off then No. 4 Tennessee 19-14 in Fayetteville.
Coming off a bye week, this Arkansas team is set to host its second top-10 opponent in three weeks and the fan base will be rocking when the purple and gold come to town for the battle of the Golden Boot.
Offensively, the Razorbacks sit top-10 in the country in total offense, averaging nearly 485 yards per game but sits outside the top-30 in scoring offense at 33 points per game. This is an efficient, slow moving offense that is extremely consistent on third down, where it lies No. 1 in the conference at 52.8%.
Featuring a top-10 rushing offense in terms of yards per carry and combining it with a top-25 passing offense that averages over 285 yards per game, this is a unit that really thrives on a balanced attack. Despite being pretty balanced, there’s a clear way this offense wants to score and that’s in the run game.
Of the 25 offensive touchdowns Arkansas has scored, 20 have come via the run, with Green and lead back Ja’Quinden Jackson combining for 14 of those rushing touchdowns. Leaning heavily on an offensive line that will always be coached up well as long as Pittman is in Fayetteville, that group is where the Razorbacks put a lot of trust in. Kelly highlighted specifically the ‘long speed’ that Green has at the quarterback position as when he gets moving down field, he’s hard to bring to the ground.
