We built a home made 460cc Mini Driver… I Mini Driver with a GIANT Head!
Could this be the best Mini Driver in the World?… It makes sense to us, why aren’t the manufacturers building these?…
Let’s put our Custom Build Driver head to head with the Taylormade BRNR Mini Driver!

Interesting vid. It asks as many questions as it answers.
For those looking to replace a 3w like Sam and bag a 5w, maybe look at a 12 to 14 degree donor driver?
I guess you also have to be selective with the donor driver, it will have to have the the adjustability to add the weight in a manageable way. Probably with front and rear weighports or you'll end up with moonballs if you put all the weight in the back?
I think there will be more mini-drivers coming. I heard Takomo have something in the pipeline, which should be more affordable.
So if you have a driver you want to replace, you can chance it to a mini driver alternative for a bargain
Think Sam hit it on the head, when he said the extra weight might make the head droop on the downswing, hence the right shots, which likely made Gary pull it left to compensate for the club wanting to go left. I think the other option, is find a old strong lofted 3 wood, 13-14 degrees and make that into a mini driver adjusting weight with lead tape if its a none adaptor shaft/head.
Brilliant 👏
Sams a brave man for standing next to the impact screen
I can just imagine how many fun little experiments like this Sam would be able to do with the amount of equipment he has to hand and his wealth of knowledge and experience
Interested to know what the difference in weight of heads and also total weights of clubs. Interesting video
Never got on with my mini driver so it went. Mate loves his, he uses it as a 3 wood replacement and still has his driver
Great vid again lads it would be good to to see what would happen if u fitted differnt shafts into it to see if that would help
A factor not mentioned is the Gary is a lot taller and that could make a difference with the 460cc haed
I put a 3wood shaft in my driver head and it works perfect didn't change anything
Good test and worth keeping in mind.
I'd be really interested to hear what Tommy Fleetwood actually uses his mini driver for within his set up.
Boys when I bought my Sim2 maxD driver got fitted they gave me a mini driver shaft as well and it’s great for a bit more control
I love to experiment with clubs. I once put a 3 wood head on a driver shaft. It felt like swinging a hammer with a fishing pole.😂
Great experiment Gaz and it’s always a pleasure listening to Sam

Interestingly the boys on Club Champion made their own mini driver with a 460cc head and a shaft at 44.25 inches versus the mini driver shaft of 43.75. You should try this as I think you will get all the benefits of a smaller shaft but should get better numbers as a driver replacement. You could also try some of the smaller 440cc heads as well in this test as well.
I actually did a video on head weights of drivers and the mini driver is the heaviest! Both for the Callaway and Taylor made. I wonder if the heads of drivers are too light now with all the weight saving malarkey and that’s why mini drivers are more stable. Weigh qi10 vs mini driver vs 3 wood!
Best mini driver is a two wood it even doubles up as a lower degree hybrid for long par fives.
I know with all the tech machines about now days a lot of people get turned on by numbers in a studio the greatest achiever in golf super jack was tinkering with lead tape and length of shaft most his career im led to believe just by trial and error I cut my driver down by 1 inch added a butt end weight and heavier grip in theory probably shouldn’t work ie swing weight be way off I’d imagine but my driver is going longer and straighter than ever them old boys new a thing or two about golf equipment end of the day we play on grass in all weather not in a nice warm studio with no variables
@garymartingolf
The point would be to have Mini Driver beat the driver….So get a 44.5 inch shaft stuck in the mini and compare it to 44.5 inch driver….
12:18 Facepalm! You can't use two different colors for the flight data!
Was that last comparison for Sam with a mini off the deck vs a 460 head off a tee? Even if it was on a tee, it looked like the mini was teed up way too low for a fair comparison. It seemed very apples to oranges to me.
I’ve never tried a big modern driver and the new mini’s are bigger than our older ones. 🤷♀️ When Big Bertha came out it was huge. 😂
I put a Mavrik Max head on a 3 wood shaft but set it to 12 degrees. Works great for those shots where the is danger long, or when I need a fairway finder.
That was a stealthy yet fabulous poke at Shiels @ 18:24
I tried putting my PXG 5 wood into my PXG Driver both are the same shaft family and broke the shaft in 4-5 swings so be careful with testing 😂
“That feels awesome! That big head and small shaft together”
Maybe the cut down shaft needed to be tipped some and than butt trimmed.
Enjoyed that, thank you.I think there is a sweet spot in between the two for a 460 driver, around 44 and 1/4" or 44 and 3/8" for shaft length,my next experiment.
What were headweights of each?
Try a cobra one-length hybrid.
Tinkering is a lot of fun. I game the Taylormade Mini driver at 13 degrees to replace 3 wood. Have thought about higher lofted shorter shaft 460cc driver
Great fun test, the other big point is mini driver off the deck makes it much more versatile than then driver cut down. I 100% think 99% of people are playing drivers too long though now manufacturers are going up to 46" as "standard" 🙄. For me knocking an inch or so off would help alot of people find the middle of the face more as long as its done correctly.
Does sticking a shorter shaft in a driver make it a "mini driver", or just a driver with a shorter shaft? If I grip low on my driver then I do the same thing for no money…
Great to see Sam return. He seems most knowledgeable, helpful and a pleasant guy. Though he might be due in holing another mid-iron shot from the fairway.
