How much wood could Chris Wood come clutch, if Chris Wood could come clutch wood? Now that we’ve got that out of the way, let’s talk about the word of the day: “Clutch.” While the term is well-known in sports like basketball, where it refers to moments of high-pressure heroics, it hasn’t fully made its mark in football—yet.

In this video, we delve into what it means for a goal (or a player) to be “clutch” in football. Beyond the big moments, who are the most prolific clutch Goalscorers in Premier League history? Using research from Calum Shepherd, we uncover the players who’ve made a habit of scoring when it matters most—from the likes of Everton’s Tim Cahill to Coventry City’s / Aston Villa’s / Daytime Tele’s Dion Dublin.

We break down the data, examining clutch goals from the 84th minute onwards that either equalise or take the lead, and reveal some surprising names and stats. Are these clutch goals vital to Premier League success?

Could the rise of longer games and five substitutes lead to more “clutch” moments in the future? With changes to how football is played, we explore whether the idea of a clutch goalscorer might become more central to the game.

Big shout-out to Calum Shepherd for his excellent research, you can read his full analysis on Clutch Goalscorers here …

  1. Was about to say, until you adjusted the results for calculations of minutes played, there is no way that Spurs players are leading clutch premier league goalscorers.

Although what I would say is that I don't think clutch is that important in league games, but are a lot more important in cup games. It's why i consider Drogba clutch, as he was always great for scoring goals in finals. Same with Havertz, he always steps up for big games.

  2. Would be interesting to do a manner similar to foolish baseball who uses “championship probability added” – how did a teams chance to win the league change from before the goal? For example agüero would be a 0%-100% jump (presumably) while a GW1 winner from aubameyang means next to nothing

  3. 7:33 That graphic was one of the most confusing things I've ever seen.

God I hope that will one day be true but let's be honest, it's Everton…we'll find a way to fuck up even the most favourable of circumstances. Even Carlo Ancelotti could only manage a 10th place finish with us.

  4. Just cause I was curious, Bellingham had 4 clutch goals for Real Madrid last season following this metric: two against Barcelona, one vs Getafe and one vs Union Berlin. Not including 2 for England: 1 vs Belgium in a friendly and the one against Slovakia in the euros.

  5. Funnily enough in the NBA a common criticism of Steph Curry is that he isn't particularly clutch compared to his other peers like KD, Dame Lillard, Kobe, MJ etc

  6. Extended Agueroooo mention plus a mention of Steph Curry within minutes of each other is like torture for a Rockets and Man United fan

EDIT: just saw the Palmer meltdown as well lol

  7. love the Ted Lasso reference, pretty neat and smooth to fit it in with PL videos. keep up the quality man

  8. Clutch. Another bit of corporate style jargon like xpected goals or game management. Makes people soind more profound or intellectual than they actually are.

  9. You should add in a variable on how valuable the 'clutch' goal was. If it's a mid-season prem game against a team you should beat then it's less valuable than a cup final or important game. AGUEROOOOOOOO would have maximum points, for example.

  10. Just found this channel through the farmers league video and I love it, genuine pub knowledge for me to use keep up the great work
