  1. It was Roberto Clemente that Pete Rose beat to win the batting title by going 4 for 4 and winning by less than .003 points .348 to .345 in 1969.

  2. Waiting and hoping for some pundit to say, "You know what, let's focus on the positive. Here's what we can embrace about Peter Edward Rose…" Frankly, I'm disappointed that a Cincy native (and talented, respected media figure) insisted on focusing on the negative throughout this interview. Dan could have used this time with the amazing storyteller that is Johnny Bench to CELEBRATE Pete's life. Instead, he chose to only demean it. Very disappointing.

  3. Its so weird because when I think of the Hall of Fame putting Pete on the ballot, and the voters possibly putting him in, that its kind of a slap in the face at this point.

Yeah, his family would be very happy, but Pete is dead. The one wish he had was getting to Cooperstown.

Idk, not that it ever will happen, but putting Pete Rose in the Hall would make sick in a way.

  4. A sad chapter in Rose's legacy. Got into baseball 50 years ago because of him. Pete Rose will forever be on my All-Time roster lineup, carved in stone. RIP.

  5. I cut my teeth on Major League Baseball in the 1970s. I remember the Big Red Machine in 1975 and 1976, winning the World Series. I became a Cubs fan shortly after, and remember so many games with Cincy. I was dating a girlfriend and went to her house and watched the 1980 World Series when Pete was with Philly. I was well out of college when the gambling issue came to a head, and Commissioner Bart Giamatti suspended him. Because my first love was baseball, I supported the suspension. After extensive credible evidence was produced indicating that Rose bet on baseball and on his own Reds, Rose was offered an opportunity to present evidence to refute the the evidence. Rose declined. Giamatti could come to no other conclusion but that the allegations were therefore materially true.

During the press conference following his announcement of Rose's banishment, Giamatti said, among other things, "…it seems to me that a person who wished to establish the kind of record that would then sustain a request…an application even to get considered would want to take whatever steps it seems that person would think appropriate to be persuasive. And I'm not here to prescribe them, to dictate them, nor to diagnose."

Deputy Commissioner Fay Vincent, who acted on behalf of the Commissioner in negotiations with Pete Rose's legal team, made it clear to the legal team that any request for reinstatement would not be considered if Rose denied betting on baseball. Vincent was asked by Rose's lead counsel whether there was any period of time after which Giamatti would be favorable to Rose's reinstatement, and whether Giamatti would keep an open mind. Giamatti later spoke directly (his only time) to the lead counsel and assure him there was no set time period, and that he WOULD be open minded. After these negotiations, Rose signed the agreement that allowed him to petition for reinstatement after one year and to drop his legal challenges to the Commissioner's investigation. Within days of his banishment of Rose, Giamatti died. Fay Vincent took over as Commissioner and took no action on Rose's appeal for reinstatement. Subsequently, Bud Selig became Commissioner. He also declined action on Rose's petitions.

In press conferences following Giamatti's announcement, Ros vehemently denied he had bet on baseball. In fact, he denied it for more than 15 years. Not until 2004 did he admit that he bet on baseball and the Reds. But he only came clean on things everyone already knew, and only for profit in his memoir "My Prison Without Bars". Rose live in Las Vegas for many years, and made no efforts to denounce or discontinue gambling as a rule. This no doubt remained part of the reason no positive decision was ever made regarding reinstatement.

It is unlikely Rose will ever be reinstated. He is now dead, can no longer improve his personal life and habits and can no longer plead a case for forgiveness. He is now as much a part of the past as is Shoeless Joe Jackson's whose reinstatement was rejected in 2015 outright by the same Commissioner who most recently considered Rose's reinstatement in 2022 after Rose personally appealed.

  6. The clamor to put Rose into the HoF is growing now that he is gone. One of the reasons people look to is that it's a different time. The Astros were allowed to keep a World Series after it was proven they cheated. The Red Sox were proven to be cheaters. No player got more than a year's suspension, if anything. I'll make all you Rose apologists a deal. When Rose gets into the HoF, so does Shoeless Joe.

  7. Bench reminds me of Seaver in teh sense of just being sharp, honest and brutally frank. You can read his love, anger, resentment, admiration and respect for him. Like most people who have history, the emotions can become intertwined and complicated. Bench is honest enough to just let it fly. Just like Seaver would.

  8. Bench always a such class act …tells it how it is and takes the high road. It would be great if these legends would show up in the tv booth during the playoffs for a few innings each game … Johnny, Reggie, Brett, Schmidt , Winfield

Dan is spot on …some of these guys are ocd competitors …they always have to be in on the action, have to win . Pete I’m sure thought he could win no matter what.

There is a simple fix here… build a wing at the HOF for these great players that broke the rules. Honor them for their greatness on the field and teach about their mistakes off of it.

  9. I'd rather stand in front of 3rd base and get hit by Steelers Linebacker Jack Lambert than get hit by Charlie Hustle Pete Rose 🥶

  10. If the baseball HOF ridiculous rule says that baseball players can't be on the HOF ballot if they are ineligible to work in baseball, then how can you have some ineligible after they have died? I think death trumps that and any legal document that he signed. Shouldn't he be eligible now?

  11. Pete rose should be in the HOF for the accomplishment on the field. What he did was as a manager so he should never make it in as a manager but why punish him to harshly.

  12. All true baseball fans absolutely with no doubt know Pete rose is a hall of famer and for me that’s how I will remember him I’ve seen him play so many times and I was fortunate to meet him personally 2 different times . RIP HOF er

  13. This rule needs to be changed. It does not need to be permanent. It's not like he took steroids and enhanced his performance. He earned his greatness in baseball and it's absurd to believe this rule is considered greater than that. A rule that does not need to equal eternal punishment.

  14. Notice Johnny didn’t answer the question of when was the last time he saw Pete Rose. Johnny hated Pete. Just look at all his old interviews and videos and he vehemently has said Pete does not deserve to be in the HOF.

  15. When you play team sports and you have success, you have a bond with teammates that never dies, even if you grow apart there is always that bond.

  16. Johnny didn't like Pete off the diamond. He was very vocal that Pete should NOT be in the HOF. He pushed that in the 90's and 2000's

  17. I pray he had Jesus. "What does it profit a man to gain the world yet lose his soul…? " – JESUS (GOD)

  18. Johnny is a piece of crap in my mind. He's heartless as he was talented. Not nearly as many people would see him as great as what he is if it wasn't for Pete.

  19. I keep hearing this phrase to protect the integrity of baseball. When did baseball have a flawless integrity? Shoeless Joe Jackson, spit balls, gambling on baseball, steroids…the list goes on and on. They keep saying Pete never said im sorry and yet I see so many interviews where Pete apologized. We can have the debates on whether a man should get into the Hall of Fame for what he had done on the field, or hold him accountable after his playing days BUT which ever side you choose, I still cant help but wonder about the MEN who denied Pete of the HOF! Where they completely righteous? Do they have skeletons in their closet? If gambling is an addiction, which I believe it is, then why have we thrown away a man like Pete with ZERO second chances or got him help, and yet tons of killers have found their way to freedom!

  20. I respect Johnny’s honest and blunt assessment of Pete’s situation. Does Pete belong? Of course. But Rose burned every bridge he crossed with his middle finger in the air. A truly tragic figure.

  21. Pete just let the lie go on too long. It was heartbreaking when he finally admitted it, especially just to sell a book.
