The Portland Diamond Project, a private group of baseball supporters that for years has aspired to bring a Major League Baseball team to Portland, has signed an initial agreement to purchase the 33-acre plot of land on the South Waterfront known as Zidell Yards.

Multiple sources tell WW that the deal is near completion.

The purchase—if it’s inked—would signal the most meaningful step yet in the group’s longtime desire to bring a professional team to Portland. The impending purchase of the sprawling property may be what’s necessary to keep Portland as a competitive city as MLB ponders expanding from 30 to 32 teams.

The Portland Diamond Project has reached an agreement to purchase 33 acres of prime property on the South Waterfront and intends to use it for a Major League Baseball ballpark development, this publication has learned.

The Zidell Yards property has long been coveted by the MLB to PDX effort. It includes multiple access points that would feed into the ballpark from both sides of the river. The preliminary plans for the stadium district are expected to include 15 acres of retail, hotels, and residential developments.

I reached Craig Cheek, the founder of the PDP, on Monday. Cheek confirmed the news. He said: “We’re excited to share more soon.”

  2. This is the best idea for an MLB park location in Portland so far. Would definitely reinforce the south waterfront in a big way. I would love to see this happen.

  3. I am loving this Brodie Brazil guy. Just found him. Such a breath of fresh air when compared to these hot-take blow-hards that drown out good sports commentary.

  4. If they're gonna spend money to bring in another professional team, they need to make it worth it and bring the NFL to Portland.

  5. Portland is not a viable home for an MLB baseball franchise.
Baseball is boring and stupid. And Portlanders are not.

  6. Got it WRONG friend. Will Clark. Say I NY ‘Met’ him. Will a Met. Less Will Ahh Met. More what sound does A make. Will I Am sucks; but he may be useful. Will (I) Am Ette

  7. Who would go ⁉️🤷‍♂️

Portland is one of the most poorest cities 🏙️ in America 🇺🇸 with incredible amounts of homeless. This MLB stadium 🏟️ ever opened, fans would be overwhelmed with beggars & drug addicts 🔥💉💊

Having moved to Portland from a lifetime in Santa Cruz to Berkeley/Oakland. The public transit within the city and many equivalents to my childhood A’s experience exist (SC drive to Fremont BART) are both surprisingly ideal. I did invest nearly a decade earning an MA in Sociology and Demographics at Cal. There has been a lot of free time for curiosity, travel and applying my sociological imagination.

I have been here seven years and know my Mormon metropolis well. Both cities love their NW SE NE but SLC hates words too. It’s a math compass of bland efficiency if you understand it. SLC is a FAR more desirable market for an MLB franchise. Suburbia galore! Sobriety galore! Wanna go out hun? Well I guess that’ll be nine tickets as opposed to the 2.5 in Portland. It would be nice to have a presence on the map between Seattle and SF. SLC has continued its socioeconomic growth at a ready rate; Portland has seen decline in recent years.

I am confident the median household income is higher/cost of living lower in SLC as well.

Do not let the population fool you. While the Portland ‘metro’ sits at 2.5 million to 1.4 in SLC. The SLC area actual has a CSA (combined statistical area) ranking of 2.8 million. If you throw a mountain or ski resort or the largest endorheic lake in the Western Hemisphere. The census folks can lead one to underestimate just how many folks are within a 45min drive to a game.

Did not mean to go off to that extent. Hopefully the algorithm respects word count regardless of quality.

  9. Okay, so given the Diamond project announcing that the stadium is going onto the larger segment of land (18 versus 15), that says it'll be put on the south side of the bridge. I personally dislike that, as I believe it should be the north side for the most direct access to transit, pedestrian and bicyclist infrastructure, which then would also minimize the amount of parking required to attend games or other events hosted at the stadium, like concerts. Tilikum Crossing the the white cable-stay bridge on the north side of the property, which is exclusively a transit, pedestrian and bicyclist bridge. If they're smart, they then could easily implement a beautiful broad walking path south to then access the developments they want to put in on that 18 acres.

I assume home plate will end up facing west-southwest, southwest or west, as I believe it's a given they'll prioritize the view east toward Mt. Hood. Though to maximize the views, the southwest facing option would allow the grandstands to get views of Hood, Adams, Helens and even Rainier on clear atmospheric days, as well as flights going in and out of PDX.

I do personally strongly prefer getting a NHL team over a MLB team, even a NFL team over a MLB though, for a number of reasons, one being I guarantee people here would support the other two far more than they will a baseball team. Sure, we have history with baseball teams, but honestly? It didn't make any noticeable impact on us or our history. In fact, people's love for the other two stand out more than baseball by a long shot.

Ultimately, I'm just glad it won't be the Red Tail Golf Course.

Willamette is said "Will-am-it". And we're fairly lazy speakers, so if you slur them together, you should nail it.

  10. Oregon won't publicly support a major league baseball team. With a state population of only 4.2 million who don't pay sales tax. It would be an uphill battle for MLB for people who hate paying taxes and vote with their wallets.

  11. Lloyd Center is NOT downtown. It's across the river from downtown in "NorthEast." Saying Lloyd Center is in downtown Portland is like saying Oakland Colesium is in downtown Oakland. It's not.

  12. All y'all commenting about traffic nightmare for Zidell, yeh, yeh, whatever. Look at Oracle Park in San Francisco. Pretty much same set up. Near downtown traffic but also super accessible by public transit including Caltrain, light rail and buses, close to 101 and Bay Bridge, on the water. Other than RIB needing quake retrofit, same same traffic hassle.

  13. PDP should acquire the A’s. Green and Gold are the colors of Portland’s teams, it would keep them on the West Coast, and is much closer to getting them a ballpark than Vegas.

  14. There's no infrastructure in South Waterfront with only one lane roads going in and out. Traffic congestion would be a nightmare.

  15. Portland is right up there with Oakland in terms of being a dump. No team should move there until they get their act together.

  16. The stadium will be less than half full 3 years after opening.
This will be a waste of billions of dollars of taxpayer money

  17. That looks like a great place in the thumbnail: right next to a perfect spot for a catastrophic flood.

Land in the South-East will be going for pennies in the near-future, as will any location near rivers in low-lying areas.

But I suppose it’s not my moolah I’ll be wasting. What about on an island, or underwater? Skip to the end right away.

  18. Would this in any way increase the amount of direct flights to more cities out of PDX? Going to a wedding in Philly this weekend and it was surprising to see I couldn’t get a direct flight

  19. For the Orlando nay sayers, Orlando could easily support a MLB team. Florida is a large state and four hours from the Marlins, and over 2 hours to the Rays stadiums. Saying Orlando is too close to those cities is the equivalent of saying Portland shouldn't get a team because Seattle already has a team in the northwest.
