Hi I’m Rick Shiels, welcome to my channel! This YouTube channel is designed to help you play better golf, also to help you enjoy your golf more!
I specialise in golf equipment reviews, golf instruction & I play against some of the best golfers in the world!
I also want to make you play better golf by providing coaching video on all topics about golf, how to fix your slice, fix your hook, help you drive the golf ball longer, hit your irons more pure, hit your irons closer to the hole and help you draw and fade your golf shots.
I will also help you lower your score by chipping better by stopping you duff and thin chips, pitch the ball closer and also create backspin. Also I will provide you help to putt better and hole more putts!

It looks just like golf. I'm glad Rick profiled it. He didn't shoot lights out. The golf course served its main function just fine — as playing field for a great game, and one that welcomes all. Golf was played for many many decades before anyone thought that fairways needed to be 'manicured' or that bunkers should be raked and easy to play from.
Just take over the course with your money and media influence it could be something nice and a chance to help your local community
Pennington Flash holds a special place in my heart, even though it was always underfunded and a bit boggy—even in the summer. It was the first golf course I ever played on as a junior 25 years ago, and it sparked my love for the game. As a 13-year-old, I saved my paper round money to buy a sleeve of 3 golf balls and a round of golf at Pennington. I still remember the 4th hole when I bought a plastic bag full of lake balls from the locals fishing them out of the stream!
Municipal courses like Pennington are the gateway to golf for those who might not have the money to play elsewhere. They provide access and opportunity to so many young and aspiring players like I once was. We need to cherish and preserve these places—they’re where golfers are born.
Seeing all the clubs Rick has over the years… I mean kinda selfish IMO. Give em away. There is zero need for all of them and giving back to your community is sometimes I’d personally do. But that’s just my 2cents
At the end of the day a course like this is perfect if you’re new to golf or if you’ve not played in a few years and want to get your eye back in. No pressure. You could go play 2-3 times a week without hurting the bank. Build a bit of confidence. Definitely a place for courses like this, otherwise a lot of the players that start on these courses would never have the confidence to get properly into golf.
Edit: pretty much exactly what you said at the end. Good video
See you again soon pal 🤥
If the ball doesnt even roll, they might just close the course. Why would you play there if you cant even play actual golf
If you want to play on a poor course, go and play Beccles
We play there once a week after work, often just in my work clothes. You’re spot on – great course design, poor maintenance.
It’s where I learned to play. The first time I went to a ‘proper’ course it felt VERY EASY in comparison. It’s like learning to play on hard mode.
Absolutely love the place though, lots of great memories. It’s improved recently, they’ve really worked on the drainage and there’s been a bunch of changes but it’s a long road with few resources.
Can’t stand the slagging off that it gets – it is what it is and we’re lucky to have it. So happy to see you play there, wish you’d played every hole.
Only downside – I GUARANTEE I can’t get my usual tee off time tomorrow thanks to you.
Rick, this is one of the best and most meaningful videos I’ve ever seen you make.
A lot of videos in YouTube golf today are made on expensive courses with famous guests etc. I really do enjoy that as well but it’s quite repetitive and shows just that part of the golf community.
This one shows the other.. and is made with a lot of ❤.
It would be such a nice story if this somehow helped them to get funding and improve. Not living in UK myself but would definitely have gone there if I did.
Thx and hopefully more videos like this to come.
Out of the 10 courses I've played all over the midlands, cheap (£12) or more pricey (£30) there's only been 1 coirse with good, well cared and looked after bunkers, so many clubs seem to completely neglect them but to me the course can be as good as it could possibly be but if it has bad quality bunkers that drags is down massively
Is this the golf course where they tried to assassinate trump?
I have a gem of a very short, cheap, 9-hole near me. Just like this place. It REALLY helps me work my irons, wedges, and putting. It's not beautiful, but it's cheap.
This is like wentworth compared to merrist wood in surrey!
Would love to see Rick play at the Links at Victoria golf course that BDS did a video on! One of my favorite videos from BDS
Its just as good as where I play and 3 times cheaper
I love videos like this!
That meal deal is criminal. Diet Coke and tuna. Did you check what else there was. 😂
These kinds of places serve a purpose…for me they are a great place to take my 7 year old who is learning the game. He can play a full bag and its a bit of practice for me, but more importantly something we can do together that won't break the bank.
It just needs some investment otherwise it will just end up with houses being built on it. It states its club or is it a pay and play. People must go and use it or it will be gone. Fact!
well, i'm not going to turn pro or win national championships or anything, but i started golf playing golf by buying cheap slazengers and taking them to my local council-run golf course. now, there's a community golf club with another member paying another member's thanks to the council-run course that i started with. because, if i never had the option of learning to play at the council course, there's no way i would've got to the point where i could confidently seek a membership of a golf club.
What is up with tuna & sweet corn??
Rick I am a member at Myerscough, which I know you know well and while the conditions aren't as bad as in this video, there are spots here and there and especially in the winter that remind me of playing there. However Myerscough is affordable and has allowed me to get out and play so much golf and improve my game. It's so important to have affordable golf, not just for people getting in to the game, but for those already invested and just can't afford or justify £1000+ a year for a "proper" course.
Great to see you supporting this course
This is so nice to see..Rick playing the masters course then playing this one love it xx
Why don’t you invest into the course and own it!!
Rick should buy the course and start a whole series about it!
Makenzie Hill
Lesson in how to select the worse meal deal u can ❤
Try playing on Ascension Island
I started playing 26 years ago at a mini called Crimple Valley in Harrogate. Me and my brother in the summer holidays would pay for a day pass, and ground again and again till it got dark.
This place is much better than Crimple, and looks like a perfect place for a beginner or a junior to start their golfing journey at.
Rick! Love that and what a great gesture with the clubs 👏🏽
I started at places like this and im still shit, fancy places make me veruly nervous Forest Hill Sunday
For £6.50 what do we expect a PGA level course ? As said these type of courses are necessary to grow the game, get young kids and adults out alike who dont feel comfortable enough going to a more prestigious golf course because they dont feel they fit in or want to look like they dont know what there doing ive been there myself. You hit the nail on the head the accessibility is the key its a stepping stone.
Really looks like most courses I play.
I don’t mind it really,
Forces you to play well haha
Your classic learners course…. Don't go with high expectations and prepare to follow a six ball of hackers… Everyone has to start somewhere.
Wow nice storage full of clubs. If i had that many clubs my wife would divorce me. At least I'll be able to play more.
These courses are good for new golfers or mid to high handicappers that just wanna go out and practice some iron shots with no pressure. Hitting on a course with greens and flags is better than just batting balls at the range for an hour or so. We have a few courses like this around my house.
Doesn't look too bad my homecourse is worse at the moment duo all the rain we had this year.
I tell you, I've played worse and for a lot more money than this. These bunkers had sand that one could leave footprints in which is already good. Most low-maintenance places have rock-hard sand in them if they have any at all.
Rascal meal deal that Rick. Other than crisps
Nice gesture with the clubs!
Like to see you play a round with nike clubs
Great video, you should buy it. Create the first Rick Shields links!
❤❤
£6.50 introduces new golfers to golf without the stigma/snobbery of an expensive club.Imagine it being £20 a round and people playing regularly, that would release the funds to cut the fairways and address the bunkers, greens and tee boxes, I think the lay out is quite nice
Courses like these are mega for new golfers. I started out playing these kinds of courses three years ago, and have played worse courses than this for probably double the price. They definitely serve a purpose in British golf!
Hey, this course doesn't look so bad 😊. Fifty years ago I learned to play golf on a course where players carried little hammers to pound the tee into the ground, and there were no such things as rakes in a trap (it's supposed to be a hazard, right?!). Best part of this course was that you were able to just walk on. Try that on a big city course.
I'd play it. Wouldn't matter. Heck I'd play any course if I could. I miss it.
