If you're not using a 1-iron Matt, you just ain't trying 😂
You hit the 5w further than I hit my driver.
I have the Mizuno stz230, 5 and 3 woods. There’s maybe a difference of 5 meters in distance, but the loft in flight is very different.
This end of the bag gapping is something I struggle with (15 handicap). Irons and woods are ok and mostly straight ball flight. Hybrids hook on me. Looking at ditching the 3 wood and finding a 7 wood to pair up with the 5 wood.
Only 5 wood for me. Never got on with hybrid
Did I miss the bit where you recommended why you’d use a 3 No. driving iron?
I just can't get past the typo in the title 😢
For those, like me, who cannot hit a wood, I humbly suggest the hi wood. Easy like a hybrid with the distance of a wood
The mizuno fli-hi 2 iron is 16.5 degrees as standard, not 19.
Firstly have some lessons and practice, once you have some consistency, know your shape and misses, a good fitting and gapping session. I did this after a medical episode that changed my ability profoundly, my handicap is again dropping toward my pre event level. The way i hit the ball is different, but i am in control
Can't get on with the look of a hybrid at address, especially the weaker lofted models (tried one recently at a TayloyMade fitting). Got some new clubs on order and it will be 5i to 7w for me.
I hit my 3W well. So it's more of a decision of full send with a 3W, soft swing, or swing out of my shoes.
My 5 wood's 17•5 and Rescue 20° I use both for different shots
1:30 FliHI 2 iron is 16.5. The 3 iron is 19.
11 handicap my stealth udi 2iron is a beast off the tee.
I'm a 16hcp
Driver carries 240 ish
5wood carries 210 ish
7 wood carries 190 ish
My 7 wood has the digger rails on the bottom for the versatility of a hybrid, and fills the gap perfectly between my 5wood and 5 iron
To throw another club in the mix, I’ve gone with a 19° Callaway Apex UW as my longest fairway wood
I have 5W and 4H. 5W off the fairway for longer shots, 4H out of first cut/rough and off the tee on long Par 3's.
I also use 3W as a 'fairway finder' if the big stick isn't working or suitable.
Each to their own, but i know i have a distance gap. 5W about 220 on a good day, 4H 190-195.
I got talked into using an hybrid instead of a 4 iron and I can't hit the damn thing. I hit my 3 wood pretty good off the tee maybe I should consider a 5 or 7 wood instead. If I'm striking my irons well I can hit my 4 iron good but my miss is a block and it's usually goes straight out of bounds to the right which is lethal.
As a 45 year old male, mind you I started playing golf around 14 years old and had a golf club in my hand by age 6 or 7 I reckon, I rarely carry an iron longer than a 5 iron in my bag. All my other clubs are Driver, 3 Wood, 5 Wood, a 3 Hybrid and 4-Hybrid and the rest is shorter irons all the way down to a LW. I can hit a 2 iron, 3 iron and 4 iron just fine. However, I do agree with Matt, the versitlity of a Wood or hybrid suits my golf game better.
I'm surprised you didn't talk about swing speed and its impact on launch and descent angle. I feel like a lot of slower swing speed players would benefit from looking at higher lofted fairway woods. High launch/soft landing is the key if you want to stick on a green.
19 degree 3 hybrid for me.
Go for a fitting. I used to have a 4 hybrid I’d either thin or push right. I replaced with a 7 wood that spins more, goes the same distance and lands soft. Fitter recommended and it worked out great
