  1. "Why Thorne is not blame "

Immediately goes on to show why Thorne is to blame. At the least partly to blame.

  2. Yeah, there’s a ton of QB to QB sympathy here. It’s dense to think everything is one player’s fault, but there’s no defending Thorne here.

He’s a fifth year senior who can’t read a defense. The Freeze system is incredibly QB friendly, it’s really hard for a guy to fail this miserably. There’s legitimate home run threats that spread the field now. You can no longer shift the blame onto the WR room as you could last season.

The whole argument for Thorne is that he’s a stable, veteran presence in an otherwise young offense. The kind of guy who won’t really win you games, but won’t lose them for you either. Yesterday ripped that argument to shreds. There’s no benefit to playing Thorne over any of Hank Brown, Holden Gernier, or Walker White if the floor is this low.

  3. at 4:30 Thorne throws a touchdown and Murray says "nothing there, Patton has to eat it"…. C'mon Murray… how can you miss a touchdown pass from Thorne and a great catch by the receiver?

  4. In every play theirs a wide open receiver that he misses or doesn’t even attempt the throw….im hoping it was just Auburn underestimating Cal because of last week… I’m thinking Hugh makes some adjustments and we’ll still have a solid season…as an Auburn fan we all know we play up or play down to our competition

  5. Good analysis. Thorne isn’t innocent but he isn’t the only one guilty. Sometimes he doesn’t have a check down and other times he doesn’t take it.

Also with the depth of playmakers why not try another players strengths? Why are you running deep routes a ton? As an Auburn fan I would love to consistently see intermediate routes. But Auburn can’t

  6. Throws behind an open receiver for in IC. 4th and 2 he chooses to throw it deep. Over throws a guy a seam route. Throws it to the RB instead of that middle route across the field wide ass open. Peyton is trash. Like you said hes waiting for the guy to get open instead of throwing the ball knowing his guy is going to get open.

  7. So that last play, Colemen was actually hurt. Quite unfortunate actually. He wanted to come out before the play, but it was 2 minute drill. He should've just gone down and caused the ref timeout.

  8. Listen I mean no disrespect to Thorne I’m sure he is a great guy but after watching the way he handles pressure it’s almost saddening, if you look at the the Cal Qb when he had pressure he just gave it to the te and what did Thorne do panic and throw a pick as a Auburn fan I am done watching these football games

  9. So based on the film you reviewed, I counted 12 mistakes by PT alone. That's too many mistakes given the number of passes Auburn attempted. You didn't even show all of his throws or his INT's either. So if I had to guess, Thorne made 16-19 critical mistakes in the game against Cal.

  10. It really comes down to small things man. Simple reads. He just doesn’t make them.

  11. I agree, the buck stop with whoever is in charge. As an ex-military man I would hate to go to war with commanders who did not put no more thought into their offensive play strategy than Auburn’s coaching staff. Auburn has a roster than is capable of winning that game. And why did the kicker kept missing field goals?

  12. Cal's defense held Auburn to 14 points last year. This year they held them to 7 but the refs gifted Auburn another 7.

  13. Aaron, I really liked the breakdown, they are good insights, the only problem is you gloss over the awful throws he makes, and there were six or seven other really bad reads he made that for some reason you did not talk about at all (I cannot remember them all, but there were many) and you say bad throw…when it was egregiously bad for a four year player and in his second year in the system. My big question is……why do you title this, it is not PT's fault, when he threw 5 interceptions….4 for the record books, because that was not PI on the one called back, and I am a die hard auburn fan. It is disconcerting that you do not put any blame on PT, he needs to read quicker, react better, and understand in the last play that his rookie WR is asking to come out of the play and instead he throws to the one injured player…..you are the CEO of this offense, you need to know when someone is in pain and is asking to come out of the game.

  14. I get it. We ran play action power one time, and Frazier at sniffer/h-back completely whiffs the block. Total lack of effort.

I also get he was a little under duress. He definitely holds on to the ball way too long. With as much pressure they brought, we surely had 1-on-1 matchups that were not found, and if they weren’t won, then at least give a play a chance instead of taking the sack and killing the drive.

And the last interception? Total lack of will to win. Terrible effort. Terrible attitude.

  15. 25:07 “receiver’s just jogging”. Because Coleman hurt his shoulder on the previous play and couldn’t come out to avoid stoppage of snap for defensive subs.

    Thorne has to recognize that.

  16. You made a good case as to WHY it WAS Thorne’s fault. However not entirely. Coach should have yanked him and went with the back up.

  17. I think a better title is “Thorne isn’t solely to blame.” I’m picking up what you’re putting down with the scheme, and the RBs crowding passing lanes. You did a good job to touch on him needing to get the ball out quicker on most of his poor plays. However, you showed 1/2 of his interceptions, and basically blamed Cam Coleman for one of them because he was jogging/hurt. Coaches should’ve pulled him out of the game if he’s hurt, sure, but Thorne had to have the awareness not to throw the ball to the banged up guy. Auburn wins that game with better a more accurate and more decisive QB.

  18. At 4:30 you said “rolls out tries to make a play, but nothing there for Peyton Thorne”. He threw a TD…. That scramble roll out throw was ruled a TD.

  19. I watched the entire video and fail to see how Thorne wasn’t at fault! Looks to me like he just won’t throw the ball when he’s supposed to, same as last year!

  20. Erin: 'Why Payton Thorne is not to blame.'

Also Erin: Throw it now. Don't hold on to the ball. He should be throwing it now. THROW IT NOW PAYTON!

Almost sounded like an Auburn fan there for a minute.

  21. A few suggestions and minor critiques. It be great if you used a smaller marker size so it takes up less of the screen.

Different color markers would be very helpful as well especially when drawing different things for offense vs defense.

When you cut so many plays out (which is totally understandable), it’s super helpful if you tell us what down and distance it is, which you tell us sometimes but every play would be greatly appreciated.

The video also seemed to cut off pretty abruptly.

Massive respect to you Aaron, I love these types of film breakdowns and I know you’ll get better with time!

  22. FWIW, Aaron can't just get on here and be overly critical of coaching staffs, play selection and coaching quality as that could lead to complications with his professional broadcasting career. But it's clear by the title that he doesn't think Payton Thorne is to blame (or at least fully to blame). Reading between the lines after watching this review, there are a lot of play designs and coaching whiffs that he's pointing out in addition to some of Thorne's mistakes. Freeze and Nix don't seem to have fully prepared this team, and play calling and design are half-baked, leading to poor overall play.

  23. Aaron, this is good stuff. Found your channel while trying to better understand what really happened that lead to such a bad loss. Awesome that you have access to these zoomed out camera views. Really get a better sense of what is going on than what you get on the tv broadcast. Appreciate your analysis. I learned a bunch and feel like I have a much better understanding. So much better than listening to people give their handwringing opinions without this game tape to review. You earned my subscription.

I’m ready to see what Hank Brown can do.

  24. Um that was a touchdown throw to KLS on the busted curl route. It was an imorov play. Best play of the day for Auburn

  25. The blame is 50% on Throne and 50% on Hugh Freeze for not taking Throne out and letting one of the Freshman play. I mean seriously after watching that terrible of a game you can't tell me that the 2 freshman on the side lines would have done any worse than him! I want to see Thorne dropped to 3 rd sting and have Hank at 1 and White at 2 this Saturday and see what they look like.

  26. As an Auburn grad, you’ve never been my favorite, Aaron, but this was a great breakdown, man. I will tune in for future ones if you have the patience to watch Auburn film 😂

  27. Where are you getting the game film and angle's from? Way better than the broadcast views

  28. Maaaaaan sounds like most of those plays were Thorne’s fault. I guess where it falls on Freeze is calling a lot of medium and deep pass plays for a guy that can’t properly read coverages and isn’t very accurate. Idk what else you do though. Thorne is scared to throw in the middle of the field and if we run quick screens every play it’s going to be a whole lot of 3 and outs.

  29. Honestly, I don’t understand why they don’t let Redshirt Freshman Hank Brown come in and play, we’ve only seen him against Maryland in the Bowl game and Alabama A&M, and in that bowl game he looked way more confident and made way quicker reads. I know the offensive line didn’t hold up as good as it should’ve, but Payton waited way too long to make reads. I’d rather see the young guy get a chance to develop instead of a 5th year senior throw for 100 yards and 4 picks.

  30. Aaron I’m not understanding why u are saying Thorne isn’t to blame but you are seeing that he’s making mistakes are things that are taught in highschool ball

  31. Being a life long auburn fan this pains me.. I don’t want to put the blame all on one player.. but I damn sure don’t want a 5th losing season either, I thought we would be better yr 2 of Coach HF. I’m not jumping off the ship just yet but it’s gonna be hard to make something of this season if we don’t improve IMMEDIATELY
