Back flip is totally wrong decision. He could stay at 4th place because of that. If shoma took bettween 4-6 points higher. Back flip belongs to shows.

Can someone more experienced explain to me why he didn't win and Malinin did? I love Malinin's skating but Adam hmm seemed to rock it more and I don't just mean the back flip.

Adam, tous mes respects pour avoir fait ce qui TE fait plaisir et d'envoyer les points ISU se faire voir! (deduction pour ton backflip) Magnifique programme incarnant tout l'art de la France! 😘
He skated as if there was no future, so care free and so engaged in the performance. He knew he was going to have a 2-point penalty for that back flip (like S Bonaly did back in 1998 olympics), and he did it anyway, thinking there wasn't the slightest chance for a medal. I just imagine if he had finished in 4th place because of those points; he would never forgive himself for losing the bronze medal! Those points did cost him his personal best score ever, though. I believe he's going to think twice before doing this in an actual competition again. What I do hope is that he comes back more consistently next season, so he never has such a disappointing SP which barely qualified him for the FS. He's such an exciting skater to watch!!!
