On his weekly Chipped Ham and Football podcast, Post-Gazette Steelers insider Brian Batko welcomes KDKA-TV sports director and Pittsburgh media legend Bob Pompeani to react to the Steelers’ 53-man roster release. Were there any significant or surprising cuts? Why would the Steelers release Quez Watkins and Dez Fitzpatrick when they’re already thin at wide receiver? Are they planning on attacking the waiver wire? And what does the roster mean for injured rookies Troy Fautanu and Roman Wilson?

Plus, Brian and Bob discuss the Steelers’ offensive line situation. Will Fautanu be healthy for Week 1 vs. the Falcons? And if he isn’t, can Broderick Jones hold his own at right tackle despite a lousy preseason? How will that affect Arthur Smith’s offense? Our duo tackles those topics and more.

  1. Houston is probably going to release John Metchie III, 6' – 190lbs.–gritty 2nd year WR. The Texans have a surplus of WRs, and this guy moves.

  2. I’m sick of MT playing offensive linemen out of position and messing up their potential. Just put the young guys where they are supposed to be and move on from DM.

  3. Not to be a pessimist or anything, but unless the Steelers win convincingly at Atlanta ( which I seriously doubt ), I’m not sold on this team actually being a real threat. Not as long as other teams can see right through them.

  4. GP, Wilson didn’t play all preseason and won’t be ready, Jefferson, Austin and Miller!
Really? GP will be doubled all the time, the other guys don’t scare anyone.
We always draft 20 plus in the first round. They probably draft a WR in the first next year. Give up the one next year and get Aiyuck!
