My tribute to our retiring champion, Dyson Heppell!
Drafted with pick #8 in the 2010 draft, Heppell burst onto the scene in Round 1 the next year, immediately looking as calm and composed as a 150-game player. His performances that year saw him become the first Bomber to win the AFL Rising Star Award. Over the coming years he continued to grow as a player, culminating in a Best & Fairest and All Australian selection in 2014.
After sitting out the 2016 season as part of the supplements travesty, he came back as captain in 2017 and led the side for six seasons during a dark time for the club, helping to rebuild them from the even darker days of the ASADA scandal. Despite the unfortunate lack of team success, his performances on the field always showed immense passion for the club, his leadership was exemplary, and he was beloved for his attitude on and off the field.
In 2024 we say goodbye to this red and black warrior and thank him for being such a champion for so long. Dyson, you have left an incredible mark on the Essendon Football Club and I think I speak for the entire fanbase when I wish you all the best in your future. Thanks for the memories Hepp, we loved your work!
(Thanks once again to my brother for designing an excellent video intro!)
