I think the format is wrong. In any other sport, once you advance to the "playoffs", it is win and advance with the only advantage granted for top regular season play, perhaps a bye in the opening round. In general, once the knockout phase starts it is win or go home.
The PGA TOUR playoff, and especially, the staggered start of the final round is wrong. Top 70, top 50, top 30, winner – no special treatment, regular season is over.
