The International Olympic Committee (IOC) said on Thursday (August 1) the testosterone tests were not ‘perfect’ and demanded respect after the gender controversy over tests of Algerian boxer Imane Khelif.
The IOC has cleared the way for Khelif, as well as Taiwan’s double world champion Lin Yu-ting, who lost her bronze medal at last year’s World Championships after she failed to meet the criteria for the same reason, to compete at the Games.
The IOC decision caused a stir before the Games with some warning of safety concerns for the boxers’ opponents.
Some sports have limited the levels of testosterone allowed for athletes competing in women’s competition, while others ban everyone who has been through male puberty.
Boxing is run by the IOC in Paris as the IBA is no longer recognized by the IOC as the global sports body following a failure to implement governance and financial reforms.
The Algerian moved past Angela Carini when the Italian surprisingly abandoned their welterweight round of 16 fight after 46 seconds in the first round on Thursday, feeling pain in her nose.

Italian boxer Angela Carini, who abandoned her Olympic bout against Algeria's Imane Khelif inside 46 seconds, says she "wants to apologise" to her opponent for how she handled the moments after the fight.
Khelif is one of two athletes who have been cleared to compete in the women's boxing in Paris, despite having been disqualified from last year's Women's World Championships for failing to meet eligibility criteria.
The 25-year-old's participation in the Games has proved controversial, leading the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to defend her right to compete.
"All this controversy makes me sad," Carini told Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport.
"I'm sorry for my opponent, too. If the IOC said she can fight, I respect that decision."
Carini, also 25, said abandoning the fight had been a mature step to take, but she expressed regret at not shaking hands with Khelif afterwards.
"It wasn't something I intended to do," Carini said. "Actually, I want to apologise to her and everyone else. I was angry because my Olympics had gone up in smoke."
She added that if she met Khelif again, she would "embrace her".

People are missing the context here. Italy already had an injured nose before entering the ring. Rnd 1 gets punched at the nose and quickly retired.
