Australian Open would be a great 5th Major. Jack Nicklaus once regarded the Aus Open as a 5th Major. Would be great to expand world golf and certainly has the history as well as the great champuonship courses and would also spread out the Major schedule with it beinbg played in the Australian summer. Worth consideration…thoughts?
The PGA Championship can be outside of America.
Guy is right – something like April, June, August, October would be better. California is still hot in Oct
british open is BY FAR the worst major
The 5th major is the Players. The 6th major is the Tour Championship
The PGA championship is #2 behind the Masters.
#1 Masters.
#2 PGA.
#3 US Open.
#4 The Players.
#5 Tour Championship.
#6 The Shitish Open.
To all the “TV networks don’t want golf on during NFL” commenters-yes, but- the Premier League begins in August. That’s what ppl in the UK will be watching. That’s why there is no 5th major. Personally, I think a 5th major in Scottsdale or Texas right before the FedEx Cup would be perfect.
Australian open 5th major play it at the royal Melbourne or royal Sydney
Great point about time between majors but really feel that having three majors in America is wrong when there is so much top quality worldwide golf available. PGA rotating by continent would definitely help.
Players should be added
the australian open was always called the 5th major. past champions are the whos who of golf. bring that back
Australian Open in September 🤷♂️
golf needs more senior tournaments.
90% of golfers are over the age of 50. There should be more senior tournaments.
Yes! One in Europe proper like France or Germany
BRING BACK AUSTRALIAN MASTERS FFS GOLD JACKET NEEDS TO RUTURN
jack nicklaus always said australia should have the 5th major
Anywhere but the US.
The fifth major should be in Australia they deserve it, if someone put up enough money for the Aussie open and invited the top Liv guys say 5million to the winner it would evolve into the 5th major on its own
I couldn’t believe it when The Players was mentioned. There’s more to world golf than another major in the states. Maybe call it The World Major and non European & non American countries bid for it so it can be played elsewhere in the world and share it around. Eg Sth Africa, Australia, Japan , NZ, Asia
Australian Open would be a great 5th
Golf had a fifth major, it’s called the Canadian open. It used to be considered a major open championship. Along with the other national open tourneys. Bring back the Canadian as the last major.
Make the
Player’s Championship a major
The golf world needs a 5th major that’s outside of the US
Lovely a couple of hackers are deciding the best way foe golf to work
Moving the PGA to October or November eliminates a lot of course the PGA of America use for that event. The other reason the Open is not in August is the Olympics. Also the US plays in the Presidents Cup every not Ryder Cup year. So the PGA, in your theory, would be November every year. You need to start competing with the NFL, in America. Good luck with that. You also have the tour championship in August. I don't hate the 5th major idea. Let it Rotate around the world.
Adding any majors now would just mess up the record books
Zero chance the PGA of America plays it anywhere except the US lol. Just add a fifth major, problem solved.
Worrying about Nicklaus’s major tournament record being diminished is a mute point because Nicklaus is the only golfer to win the players 3 times lol
I think we need another non-US major
The PGA needs to be moved back to August and The Players should be the 5th Major to be played in May.
You lose daylight in August. The open has a one tee start and the first two days take forever.
I personally enjoy the US open more than the open championship every year. I think it’s good we have a major that tests players skills in links golf but I also really don’t care for how your tee time and the weather can make your round exponentially more difficult than another players. Don’t wanna sound too negative because I still enjoy it, but I’d honestly say it’s the 3rd best major after the masters and US open; in my opinion at least.
I dont think creating a new event is the answer, maybe using an existing event. I've always thought the Tour Championship could have been the 5th Major. It's late Aug/early Sep, and it's a tournament based on the whole season with the biggest financial reward.
We don't even have 4 majors anymore. I would not count the PGA until liv players get to play.
It should be called the international and at a different venue worldwide each year. Excluding the US and UK.
Masters is a great tournament but Is it a major? How is the USPGA really better than the PGA at Wentworth? Only real two majors are The Open and The US Open. Those in the UK will always favour the Open and those in the US will favor their version. If there really must be a fifth major it should not be in the US! And not be the Players
I feel like the PGA Championship was moved to give the TOUR championship the “major” golf tournament of August.
The PGA is the Professional Golf Association of America. It will always be played in the US.
I was at a 'major' yesterday. The senior Open at Carnousite. Some amazing golf and really well organised…
but yeah – a 5th proper major would be great
as an American i think this is real simple American golf fans by a large margin (there will be exceptions in the comments but that doesn't change the overall point) think the us open is the second best major to the masters and European golf fans especially the British think the British open is the second best major to the masters (or in this case crazily think the British is some how superior to the masters). I have always broken down the majors like this because I think the ranking of them is tired. the masters is the most prestigious/Super Bowl of golf, the us open is the hardest relative to par, the open is the most historically significant, and the PGA is the most professional (amateurs don't play in it)………. outside of years where conditions are brutal at the British open the US open is generally MUCH more difficult relative to par with less golfers finishing under par after 4 rounds compared to the British. Take this year for example the British open had really tough conditions and still the us open was harder with less golfers finishing under par and the winner had a worse score relative to par. So still even with bad conditions the US open was more difficult relative to par. That doesn't take into account most years when the conditions aren't as bad and the US open swamps the British in difficulty relative to par. It is inarguable; however, to not take into account the much longer history of the British open and the historical significance of the tournament.
While I will die on the hill that the Masters is the best and most important major and is considered the Super Bowl of golf, I would not die on a hill that the US open is superior to the British. I lean that direction based on it's difficulty year in and year out and my bias as an American. However, I see both arguments and for anyone that doesn't see both arguments I think they are totally blinded by bias regardless of where you come in on the debate or where you are from.
As for the fifth Major I think that whatever or wherever it is it should be Match Play. There are two main types of golf played throughout the world. Stroke Play and Match Play. If a fifth major is added it should be a Match Play tournament.
No, golf doesn't need or want a fifth major. Horrible idea to move the PGA to the fall (bit amusing that you have to correct yourself on the basics of when the majors are played/have been played). The PGA in late fall doesn't work and could not work for the simple fact that American football (pro and college) is the mainstay of the sporting world in the states, and the PGA of America, which is, oddly enough, headquartered in the US, does not want to compete with that landscape. Like it or not, the US viewership is the primary viewership for professional golf, certainly as far as the PGA is concerned. Americans are tied up with football in the fall. Every network has major deals with college and pro football. There's no TV for it in the US. Not to mention if it's in late fall, that limits where it can be played in the US and the rest of the world (Middle Eastern countries with human rights issues wouldn't be considered to any degree). Fall is spring for Australia and South America, and there's little to no attention for golf in South America. Australia's a great place, but it's a country of 25 million, and the richest tournament that country of 25 million can muster is a LIV tournament sponsored by a country that has no need to break even on a tournament and is using golf to sports wash its image. As for "no golf to watch", are you referring to golfers or casual fans? Casual fans couldn't care less when a golf tournament is played. They're not going to watch a tournament because it's a major as much as watching it because there's a top player going for his ___ win in a major, e.g. Tiger. For golfers, there's quite a bit of golf to watch before the new year., and golfers will be tuning in for the Irish Open, the British Masters, BMW Championship at Wentworth, etc. I watch golf throughout the year, not just four times, because I am a golfer. And as for the players that want another shot at a major, they had their shot this year. They had a few months to get their game ready, and then a four month stretch with ample downtime between tournaments to complete. Moving the schedule around so they have time to – recuperate? – before another major makes no sense. Golf is a sport that barely has a presence on the world stage (and will not have a larger presence until another Tigeresque player emerges, which statistically will not happen), so trying to put it on a stage throughout the year isn't going to make the presence any larger. It's going to make everyone realize how small it is.
They could have a World Open that travels the world.
Canadian Open
Australian Open
Scottish Open
Dubai Open
Just an example of 4 sites that could work.
What golf needs is to have the major back to where they were in the calendar year. Masters in the Spring. Us Open in the summer British in the fall and PGA Championship in the winter
We used to have a competition which finished the golf year and felt really like the 5th major- the World Match Play at Wentworth. It was like the mirror image of the Spring Masters.
I reckon a World Match play, even moving about, would be a great October major. It could even be biennial – missing out in Ryder Cup years.
