  1. This is old of course, and im just home off the course. The tape. Is everyone missing the point? I use 4 over on a standard grip. As I prefer the larger size i cant stand the softer feel of the larger grip. iits not math? well it is, but the math needs the rest of the math. So in conclusion all of your effort is wrong. you are just not chasing the right animal. I'm not going to do the graphical corrections.

  2. This pretty much depends on what you are going for, standard grip tape weighs 2-3g per strip so adding 6 to a 50g grip would be like having a midsize at 62-68g of weight. Personally I like standard +3 as midsize is too much grip and adds too much weight.

  3. So basically getting my 5 tapes on my midsize gives me still a larger grip but a nice firmer more direct feel than just getting a Jumbo. So I will continue to get my grips done this way.

  4. I never thought trying to make a regular sized grip into an oversized grip worked since I was first club fitted to a jumbo grip. Re-gripping years later, the gentleman that was going to re-grip for me didn’t have my grip in stock. He said he was going to be able to build up a mid-size from the same manufacturer to a jumbo. I politely asked that he just do one so I could see if it was the same, if it felt the same. It was not the same, it did not feel the same. I said as much, politely. He un-politely said I didn’t know what I was talking about. I politely paid from the single regrip, and move to another shop who not only had my grips in stock, but insisted that I try at least 3-4 other short shafts gripped with different grips until I was satisfied. He then regripped a single club, which I checked and tested again, and I left with a full set of regripped clubs, and he had a new customer for life.

I have a feeling that the first gentleman was one of the people who disagreed with your original post.

  5. I install my grips with masking tape and air compressor. I play Lamkin Sonar Blackout standard+ with 3 wraps of masking tape, you can definitely tell the difference with each additional wrap, it feels just a tad thicker and a tad firmer I think because the grip stretches out a tad with each wrap so it feels ever so slightly thicker and firmer. So with those 2 feels combined it’s more comfortable for me. It’s not gonna take the grip all the way from standard to midsize, nor should you try to achieve that with wraps of tape, but each wrap of tape will alter the size and feel of the grip. And fyi, I’ve tried midsize, it’s just a tad too thick feeling for me, I just don’t like that feel. I enjoy your vids, keep up the good work👍🏻

  6. How many wraps do i need to go to jumbo from midsize?

I already bought the grips and cant take them back ,😭

P.s. love this channel, learned a lot of non standard info from just a few videos. Cool stuff!

  7. You were not wrong in previous video. But the grip length does not shorten a 1/2" due to putting 6 layers of buildup tape. It might shorten 1/16" but not a half… We have to get it to the pre-determined length as you normally do with the tape marker for the length. Thank you for your videos AJ and for taking the time to verify this to some of your followers. 👍👍

  8. I usually measure the build up diameter before installing. Do you build up the taper portion of S200 shafts? Seems they are a good deal smaller 8” below the butt.

  9. Hey AJ, I guess there's always got to be someone who thinks that they know better. It just shows how ignorant people can be even when you spell it out to them.
As usual, you are a genuine person imparting your hard earned knowledge, honest and professional. Thanks and best regards.

  10. I think you’re correct with where you are measuring. But I will say that grip looks larger in the lower section. What does it look like around 6-8 inches down the grip?

  11. You were not wrong. You can increase the diameter but it does not equal going from standard to midsize. I use 3 extra wraps on the rh part of the grip to take some of the taper out but it in no way equals a midsize grip which I do use on all my wedges. Thanks for all your videos. I've been building clubs over 20 years and I still find helpful tips in your videos. Keep them coming. Yours is one of my favorite channels.

  12. Very simple – if you want to build up the width of the grip with tape go ahead, if you want a mid size grip. If we think that .03" will have any significant difference in your play, so be it. You can also just buy the properly sized grip! Simple – great job and keep 'em comin'!! 🙂

  13. Despite whatever has been said, I have used your guide and converted my standard grips to plus 4’s which is working perfectly for me. Also in the UK 1 roll of tape is £1.50 and 8 grips would have cost me close to £90 so for me I thank you.

  14. Seems like extra tape is a reasonable way to get a grip to be just a tad larger. Definitely not a way to get to the next size up but okay if you just want to see what slightly larger feels like.

  15. Some folks are happy to make statements based on hearsay/urban myth/historical fallacy, with no actual knowledge or experience in/with the thing they are commentating on. Other folks listen, understand, test and learn. The later can share that actual knowledge with others willing to listen, understand and learn. Thanks for being one of the 'other folks' AJ 😁

  16. Did you use a single layer of double sided tape? Per Golfworks that's required on any grip install or your desired size will come out small. Also I've used the Golfworks spec tape and it is thinner than they say it is. I would say use a std tour velvet 600 core grip on a 600 butt shaft with 5 layers of double sided tape. I think it would be very close to 960 midsize.

  17. Thanks for the video! I think you saved me some tape. I usually use 2-3 pieces on my driver.

  18. Because grips are already thicker at the butt end, the build up tape will have more effect further down where the lower hand sits. I notice it even when a grip has one extra wrap but I notice it mostly in my lower hand. Redo your test and compare the effects between the upper portions and lower portions. I would suggest measuring about 1/3 of the way down from the top and 1/3 of the way up from the bottom which is about where the middle of the upper and lower hands sit. Then you will have a real world use case test and see how it affects the upper and lower hands. Two inches down from the butt is too close to the end to get a real work result. Also, build one club with no extra wraps and another club with six extra wraps and hit them both and tell us if you can feel the difference. As in this video, don't stretch the grips. You can work the lower part of the grip down slightly so it's not bunched up but don't stretch it as far down as the grip with no wraps. And I would suggest doing this test with grip solvent so you can use both hands to make sure the upper and lower portions of the grip go on evenly with no bunching. Grip solvent will also prevent you from stretching the grip because the grip will be able to retract to its natural position because of the solvent.

  19. Inches ?? If i am not wrong only 2 countries use the imperial system So yes if you want to talk to the educated world then talk in Metric And yes stretching the grip out does make it thinner as apposed to letting it find its place Good video and keep talking mm not inches Please 👃

  20. Two MAJOR points were not addressed in this video. FIRST: What happens to a grip when you STRETCH it over build up tape. You decrease the thickness of the grip. SECOND: You increase the hardness of the grip, removing the "feel" and shortening its life. Years ago we only had standard size grips. Now we have Undersize, Standard and Jumbo/Oversize. After two buildup wraps you should be going up a size to maintain the grips life and comfort.

  21. Can you use a simple tire compressor to blow on or off golf grips? Do you need a compressor that is 1/2 gallon spec and if so is that different than the ones you see on Amazon for around $50. Thanks for the info!
