  1. Rehoboth Beach, July 22 — Joe Biden has dropped out of the US presidential race and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic Party's new nominee, in a stunning move that upends an already extraordinary 2024 race for the White House.

Biden, 81, said it had been the "greatest honor of my life to serve as your president" as he bowed to weeks of pressure to step down following a disastrous television debate performance against Donald Trump, which raised concerns about his age and health.

”While it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term,” Biden said in a letter on X.

Biden quickly announced his support for Harris, 59, who is the first Black and South Asian woman to be vice president in US history and will now seek to become the first female commander-in-chief.

"Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year," Biden said during the X debate. "Democrats it's time to band together and defeat Trump. "Let do this."

On behalf of the American people, I thank Joe Biden for his extraordinary leadership as President of the United States and for his decades of service to our country.

I am honored to have the President’s endorsement and my intention is to earn and win this nomination.
