Going to give this a try. I do struggle with that rotation… and the pull…. and the "fade"
Could you start with the heal lifted before the backswing
Well said Pete! Being a Physio I’m all for techniques which save the joints and enhance performance! Thanks for the stellar content!
What driver are you using, Pete?
Many of the great players did it – Jack said it was a key move in his swing. It’s definitely a power move – every single long drive player does it but I really struggle with the timing of the re planting. Could you expand a little more on that.
Pete. I'm 60 but identify as a 20 yr old, so why doesn't my body acknowledge that.
I experienced this when I started to flair the lead foot. It actually restricted my hip rotation in the backswing. So started to lift the heel to get the rotation back. Worked a treat. Think big shoulder turn also and do t let the arms over travel and you on to a winner.
This is spooky. I lifted my lead hill for ages but have changed it recently to no lift.
I may try it the next time I’m over the range to see how I fair again being in my 50’s
Been lifting my heal ever since the pandemic to get more rotation (I’m in my 50s). I’ve also been replanting my heel to where it falls more inside as I turn on my downswing as that helps me clear my hips out of the way. I’ve gotten compliments on how smooth my swing looks, but really it’s just the way my body wants to swing a club. 🙂
I see people with their lead foot twisted and on its side after their swing and it looks painful!
At 60 years old, I've become an advocate of the left heel lift. It takes a couple of weeks to make it feel natural and uniformly repetitive.
I would love to try this, however… I have a brace on my left leg (permanent) I am almost 70 years old and do not have the luxury of being able to raise my left heel. as of now I simply drop my right foot back a bit and flare my lead foot to try to get as much turn as possible.
I've been working with a long drive coach lately to try and add some speed and the heel lift and more importantly the heel slam is a big part of the speed generation of long drive swings. Adding the heel slam has added 6-7mph to my driver swing speed in the last few months.
Random question, what shoes are those? I want them
I've being doing that alot this year. For me its mostly timing as a stopping point for a micro pause to start the down swing
Nicklaus in his book, I believe he said, Jack Grout told him lifting his left heel would help him keep his hips more level.
Thanx Pete I’m going to try it in my 60’s now so it could help me
I thought you were supposed to shift your weight before the backswing is completed….?
Nice use of an old school driver as well
That's funny, I have the same issue at 38 with a lifetime of hockey injuries behind me. Where my coach and i figured lifting the forward heel off the ground was the ultimate "fix" adds rotation and a better weight transition through the swing. Just so happens i like to do it naturally
Which driver were you using there? Looks like my 983K……
Jason Zuback used to lift his heal while preloading in his backswing. If Zuback was in his prime today, absolutely no one would hit as far as him! Good tip!
Lifting the left heel is priceless!! been doing it since I was 20 years old, I am now 60 and still do it. Really frees up the backswing and gets the weight transferring back to the lead side when you plant it back on the ground. That's a fact.
Best thing for older golfers is to study Bobby Jones' swing. He brings his left heel pretty high, and that allows him to make a very full turn. Also his stance is a bit narrower than today's golfer, which combined with his heel lift helped him to make his turn. Jones played at a time when clubs had hickory shafts, but he still was one of the longer hitters in comps, averaging 265 yards.
Could you please do a video on driver accuracy? I have the distance but it’s inconsistent
Dont lift your head pete 😂
Was doing this but was informed that I’m raising it to high, so now in the process of trying to keep it down.
Hopefully will find a happy medium😅
go and watch Jim Venetos. His method does what you're talking about more efficiently and with less effort and strain on the lower back. As a 74 year I've gained 30-40 metres with my driver, and I still have not perfected this method. Ball striking is more consistent and my irons are longer too. Also no more over the top, hence no banana slices or pull shots. While Jim advocates his method results in a baby draw, I'm currently hitting baby fades and loving it.
Thank you for saying this is OK! ever since my spinal injury this has been the only way to complete the rotation of my back swing. Unfair advantage though I played baseball when I was young too and the left foot movement does feel pretty natural
Best description ever of this! Thanks Pete! Looking forward to The Quest next year!
Why does the Studio look soo clean? Did I miss something?
I just turned 64 and started the heel lift several weeks ago. It has helped my swing immensely. Great to see an explanation of why it works.
How much more distance did you get?
The amount of "pro's (youtube / facebook commentators)" that tell me that my swing is rubbish because I lift the front heel is mental. I'm a +4 handicapper whose swing speed is between 122-131mph on course with a gamer driver, with around 44% fairway % (and even then the highest % remaining is in the right first cut). I have a masters in biomechanics and have been playing golf more than 30 years now… Actually drives me nuts.
