In this golf video, experienced golf professional Mark Crossfield talks you through when you should be looking to replace your golf clubs.

Key Points Covered:

Mark goes through the entire bag to explain when and why you should look at buying new golf clubs or replacing the clubs you are currently playing with. From iron sets and wedges, to drivers, hybrids and fairway woods, Mark explains how changing your golf clubs can help you play better golf, and why your current set MIGHT be holding you back from better golf scores.

We all love shiny new toys, and plenty of us have favourite golf clubs that we would never even dream of changing, but here are some key points that could influence whether or not the time is right for you to buy new golf clubs:

– Lifestyle changes: How often do you play now vs when you first took up the game and bought your current set?
– Age: Unfortunately, we all get older, and at some point we will all lose some speed. Make sure your clubs aren’t holding you back when this happens.
– Conformity: Your golf clubs do NOT have to conform to traditional ideas of how a set of clubs should be made up. They ONLY need to hit certain distances. Mark explains how best to ensure your clubs “blend” at the top and bottom ends of your bag.

let’s talk about the best time to change your golf clubs everyone nearly everyone loves new golf clubs we’re going to go through the bag and talk about each one when is a good time to change your golf clubs and will it actually make any difference at all to your golf game so let’s kick this off by looking at your iron set when should you think about changing your iron set this is a really interesting question because obviously there’s a lot of opportunities within a set of irons to gain and to lose so big changes I see with ir set number one is lifestyle changes so I see lots of golfers who played at kind of teenage level into early 20s go off to University have families life hits them and then they come back to golf maybe mid 30ish and they’re still using the irons they used when they were 1920 few things that can go wrong with that one sometimes the technologies have moved on since those days two often when you’re a young player you aspire to be so they’re using like bladed irons that kind of idea and they’re playing once a week once a month now with families and they’re still using irons that they used to play when they played every day and it can be a bit of a shock so moving to a more friendly game improvement iron if you’re someone who’s having a bit of a lifestyle change where you’re not playing and practicing as much is a positive thing to test don’t be a hero next would be launch characteristics if you start hitting some shots or you’ve started hitting shots over time slowly losing lawn so the ball going a little bit lower you’re struggling to get it in the air from different lies this is when changing a model of head can move the needle in launches like it does if I try something like a kind of bladed iron up against some of the biggest cavity backs we see different launches and sometimes Peak Heights which can help golfers find more targets hit the odd more green carry the odd bunker get out of the rough more successfully these are all things to consider when getting or considering getting new irons you don’t just need to persevere you can make a situation much better for yourself and think of your iron set as a set of clubs that don’t have to link and what this means is each iron serves a purpose if you look at my set I have an interesting set where I actually have two clubs with the same letter on the bottom oh so I have two pitching wedges I have one with my stronger lofted set and one that’s more trer lofted they’re not the same Loft even though they’re the same Club I’ve had sets that have two six irons the clubs just need to hit certain distances it does not matter what is written on the bottom all your irons need to do is blend with each other and blend for you remember some of you are going to launch long irons not very high and short irons fine so you might change them up think of your eyon set as each individual Club doing what it can do for you if your clubs aren’t doing that that is a reason to think about changing and on that point I still see far too many golfers with three and four IRS maybe even five LS that they can’t hit in their bag make sure the top end blends with bottom end and top end so whatever you go into after your eyes are they blending there are loads of reasons to think about new irons some of them might affect you some of them might not but there are plenty of reasons to think about new irons what about your wedges when do they need changing well first point with wedges if you’ve got old Raw worn away grooves let’s say you’ve got trusty favorites and these have all worn away then you will get a little less control a little bit more inconsistency with your strike now for some people they like the feel of a consistent wedge that they’ve gained for years and they stick with it but the players on the Telly the people that really obviously they’re getting them for free they care about their performance but staying consistent they’re going to look after these to the utmost things like adding maybe a chipper in there is a good idea if you’re someone who’s got the old evgb with your chip in don’t be out here struggling don’t be proud get clubs that work for you chippers can really help I own a chipper and someone who has struggled with their chipping I love the fact that this is in my bag as a safety net making sure you got the loss to do the tasks so does the loft of your wedges no matter how many you’ve got do they blend with your iron set so does the pitch and wedge or the most lofted Club in your iron set move into your wedges seamlessly it needs to add wedges Gap wedges whatever you need if you don’t Point that’s what why I have two pitching wedge obviously if you go stronger irons there often can be a gap down the bottom that’s a reason to add a wedge possibly and then have you got enough Loft around the green when you need to do those important get out of jail shot stop stop stop this green so quick oh I haven’t got enough Loft on that either making sure you have the clubs that can allow you to do all the tasks out on the course so important thinking about bounces and grinds I use a loft that a wedge that’s got for my kind of all my wedges but my most lofted one that’s shaved away here and here allow me to move it on the ground make the bounce Dynamic when I need to have lots of Bounce or less understanding a little bit how your wedges can and can’t hurt you on the course is a reason to get rid of any other ones that are hurting you and start adding ones that are helping you do your wedges blend with your set this is a common one I use game improvement iron so I’ve now gone for more game improvement wedges more cavity back slightly bigger in appearance it Blends more with the iron that I play so many golfers just go for player style wedges where maybe little bit of help a little bit of blending distance as we talked about but also feels and looks by going maybe not traditional bladed wedge when no one most people are watching this video nowhere near blades with their irons bit of help even in the wedges can’t go wrong with that obviously having a wedge that allows you to flip the ball up like that super important too Fairway would WS maybe the least swapped out club in golf and what you’ll find with lots of good players is they’ll use their fairywood for years like stenson’s famous for that Jack Nicholas was famous for using the same fairway wood for a long time because if you’re good with a fairway wood you’re going to stick with it Technologies don’t move on unless you’ve got something really really old now for lots of amateur golfers that I see they just have the wrong Fairway Woods in their bag they don’t have enough LOF meaning the ball goes too low and they can’t hit it from enough situations you get some players who play their Fairway Wood predominantly from the ground and then they don’t buy a ground Centric Fairway Wood some Fairway Woods are designed to be really low profile easier off the ground some are a little bit deeper so the player who likes to hit it just from the te they have then got the low profile one doesn’t work from the tea but does work from the ground so they have this kind of hole for lots of amaters who lack speed getting more Loft on your fairway wood so just having a 15° 3 wood Fairway Wood which is what lots of people have in their bags is not good enough for a huge chunk of people watching this video four Woods five Woods seven woods these clubs often can go as far as a fairway wood on average so yes they hit a fairway wood like a three-wood longer if they hit their best but on average when they’ve put some tops in there some situations where it just flops out a long grass or from a slightly downhill lie on The Fairway on average the fivewood gets up in the air a bit more because of the’re more Loft it suits their speed and they get more out of it in many different situations even though a fairway wood for and you listen to Pros talk we’ll say oh we don’t change Fairway Woods much amateurs once you find one that works same thing the problem is loads of you have the wrong Fairway Woods get more Loft unless you’ve got a lot of speed on that fairy wood where you’re going to hit it from the ground and try and Advance it definitely changes could be happening in this part of many of your golf bags the poter this is a big one that can be changed on a field basis some people just move the needle shift the needle shift the feel with a different putter doesn’t have to be scientific it can be that for lots of golfers you’re going to look at things like different shapes so do you want Mallet or classic do you want loads of lines no lines things like the neck where this joins so Center or out here and even the curve on the neck might affect and influence the way you swing the Putter and work with some swings and not others that’s again something for you to go and test also grip size is really important with Putters just changing a grip size and a grip shape for some golfers on the putter they already own can shift the needle or shifting all the putter shape and grip and fi can do that as well when it comes to Putters there’s a lot that can be done things like Loft so you can change the Loft subject to what you deliver putter fittings are things that people don’t think about enough and should do you can move the needle with your putting it might be emotional base it might not stick around forever but it is one of those clubs that you’ll find golfers do tend to change time and time again apart from the people who love ping they stick with their magical wand pudds you can find some love in a different putter hybrids this is a big area I think people can improve on I have too I have a 22 Dee and then I also have a 20° the 20° blends with my 3-wood the 22° blends with my powerful 20 plus my most longest iron which is a six iron yep a six iron most golfers I teach like most do not think about their hybrids they just bun a hybrid in and they use things like the four hybrid is the equivalent of not having my four iron that is not always the case go and get more fit for your hybrids and blend them to whatever irons you end up with golfers just don’t they relate the number to light an iron that’s not always the case subject to how much speed you put in what launch you play uh you hit with them also what situation do you play them from are you use them from the rough M 50/50 with the rough and the Fairway do you use them off the tea you can look at different shapes different sizes hybrids and their Lofts need to be dialed in as your irons think of them as a real blend a hybrid they’re as Blended as your iron so do they mix with that longest iron like my six iron goes like 190 to 205 and my 22 hybrid goes 190 to 215 see how kind of interlaced interl they are getting your hybrids to work for you is huge for golfers you all love and think about driver the hybrids there are big holes in a lot of bags out there and finally the driver the one that most people want to change all the time it feels like it’s certainly the one that’s most marketed at you so when it comes to your driver you want to think about technology is not really changing in you you got a driver in the last five or seven to 10 years you’re going to find that it is probably doing what it should do if you’re going to whack it in a robot but think about it in the last 5 to 10 years how much of you changed are you swinging faster or are you swinging slower cuz you’ve had an injury a life change like with the irons are you hitting down and across big low kind of rising cuts off to the right these big kind of spinnies or have you turned into like a big High drawing or kind of a player through lessons these changes will make you have to think about dialing in The Loft think about dialing in the LIE slightly what head you use so you could have weight back weight forward weight in the heel weight more in the toe maybe think about what kind of sha do you use I use a 50 g shaft I use a very light shaft I’m trying to hit the ball as hard as possible swing as fast as I can standard in most drivers comes out at 60 I’m swinging at around 115 M hour tops out maybe depending on what launch monitor you measure me with um so I swing that a little bit faster with a 50 g and I still get the stability with strike to keep it on the planet so many of the amateurs I teach are using 60 even 70 G shars swinging down at 100 mph the shaft weight just doesn’t really match what they’re trying to achieve the amount of lessons I’ve done with golfers as well where we Chang their swing they’re a big slicer into a like a decent sized drawer and then their driver blatantly just isn’t set upright for them anymore obviously with today’s changeable neck technology and often changeable weights even though this one doesn’t you can move this one a bit you could dial that in for a player within a certain reason but sometimes it does mean they just need to think about a different driver so I do feel for lots of golfers it’s maybe not the driver that’s changing maybe we’re getting it completely wrong they change them every 18 months and you think oh look it’s all changed new technologies but I would say maybe it’s us that are changing me in the last 10 years as someone who is aging life is changing don’t play as enough I’ve changed I’ve gone from using a low spin version on this club which definitely gives me my longest numbers to a medium spin club because this gives me my longest is a rip this gives me my longest numbers on average maxing out this club is something golfers are not doing and that is often because they change the player changes a lesson a delivery we get older it’s horrible we get older we get more stiff we can’t move the same way which means we pushing the ground differently we make different swings definitely for lots of golfers there’s gains to be had in that club but it’s not always where they think it is and the noticeable mention here here has to be if you like bright shiny new things like if you like bright shiny new toys get as many as you like that’s as fun as anything else I love this it follows me I don’t need it but I like it bright Shin new thing good if you want to find out how to hit any of these clubs better let’s go to driver this video will show you how to hit it better that’s the real key

  1. Thanks mark, I kinda in the middle of making some of the decisions you mentioned, you make some great points to consider

  2. Great video, definitely applicable to my game. I’ve been rebuilding my bag for the past year getting back into golf. I used to be close to scratch (never kept a real handicap) and am currently a 4.6 trying to get down to sub 3 by the end of the year. Changing some clubs out has been good, but it’s now time to get used to them all and really put in the work, thanks for the reminder. Love your content, and have watched for years!
