stay tuned to talk uh in the meantime as I said I’m going to be handing over to Mark saggers and all the News latest on football as well as a little bit of politics in the meantime have a fantastic week [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] across the UK on dab Plus on YouTube on the app on your mobile the home of Common Sense this is talk a very good evening to you welcome to the show and I know that most of you if you’re uh driving and listening to us on talk and you want the football tonight if you’re not near a television screen then the place to be is talk sport they’ve got full commentary the brilliant Jim pford will be the commentator Adrian darham will be in the chair in the wonderful stadium in Berlin and uh it will be an occasion we’re going to keep your ey up to date with everything that happens here though of course we are we’ve got our referees on standby when it comes to the match and Keith acki will guide us through any dodgy decisions that are made uh let me first of all even before we think of what else we’re doing tonight um and one thing is that Joe Biden is due uh to speak in the next few minutes on everything that has happened of course uh over in Pennsylvania at the Trump rally in which uh Corey comparator who was a Chief Fire officer in Pennsylvania was named as the man who has killed a 50-year-old a hero they’ve said in Pennsylvania today as he covered his family when the shots rang out and um sakir starma prime minister of course has also said that he has spoken to Donald Trump this afternoon we’ll bring you all the news on that that should Joe Biden president of the United States come to the podium in the next uh hour or so meanwhile though time for us to look at the sport we’ve got for you tonight and we’re going to be looking back at what has been another fabulous Wimbledon thank goodness for the roof with all the rain we’ve had in the last couple of weeks and in the end it was a double up for Carlos alarz he quickly saw off Novak jovic in straight sets at Wimbledon today Carlos alarz is Spanish are they going to get a double today at the top of the world in both tennis and football as far as European sport is concerned or is it going to be England that deny that just a little later on so we’re going to be covering all of that we’re also going to be looking ahead to the next Open championship at trun which gets underway on Thursday but big buildup throughout the week and um we’re going to be talking football because uh we’re going off to Germany hopefully very shortly and uh Ben Jacobs will be our man uh who will be there we’re just waiting one or two have we got Ben with us yet we have let’s go to Ben first of all good evening to you Ben good evening sagers how are you I’m very well indeed if I have to interrupt you it’ll be because of Matters from the United States uh but first of all uh here in London I do my walk from King’s cross right the way through the the city down here to uh the South Bank and uh this was earlier this morning and I’ve never seen so many people already in England shirts and there were thousands everywhere and they’re on their way uh to trafala square they’ve been in the George Pub around the corner here there are thousands and thousands and thousands of them of fan parks and everything else all with the white England uh shirts on and it’s going to be an extraordinary night and of course the real tension uh in Berlin yeah absolutely we’ve just had the team news that’s the first thing to say and England have made a big call Luke sha starting ahead of Kieran trip here it’s his first game for club or country since February and from Spain’s perspective their 11 is as we expected Danny Carvel and Robin Lomand returning from suspension Lin Mal only 17 on Saturday in the starting 11 and that makes going to have to stop you there and come back to you uh the president of the United States Joe Biden is now speaking killed he was a father he was protecting his family from the bullets that were being fired and he lost his life God love him we’re also playing for the full recovery of those who were injured and we’re grateful to the Secret Service agents and other law enforcement agencies who and individuals who risk their lives literally for our nation as I I said last night there is no place in America for this kind of violence or any violence for that matter an assassination attempt is contrary to everything we stand for as a as a nation everything it’s not who we are as a nation it’s not America and we cannot allow this to happen Unity is the most elusive goal of all but nothing is important than that right now Unity we’ll debate and we’ll disagree it’s not that’s not going to change but it’s going to we’re going to not lose sight in fact who we are as Americans look vice president Harris and I were just briefed in The Situation Room by my homeland security team including the director of the FBI the Secretary of homeless security the Attorney General the director of The Secret Service my homeless security adviser the National Security adviser and we’re going to continue to be briefed the FBI is leading this investigation which is still its early stages we don’t yet have any information about the motive of the shooter we know who he is I urge everyone everyone please don’t make assumptions about his motives or his affiliations let the FBI do their job and their partner agencies do their job I’m instructed that this investigation be thorough and Swift and the investigators will have every resource they need to get this done look as this investigation continues here here’s what we’re going to do first Mr Trump as a former president and nominee of the Republican Party already receives a heighten level of security and I’ve been consistent in my direction of the Secret Service to provide him with every resource capability and protective measure necessary to ensure his continued safety second I’ve directed the head of the Secret Service to review all security measures for the all security measures for the Republican National Convention which is scheduled to start tomorrow and third I’ve directed an independent review of the National Security at yesterday’s rally to assess exactly what happened and we’ll share the results of that independent review with the American people as well and finally I’ll be speaking more about this tonight at greater length from the Oval Office we must unite as one nation we must unite as one nation to demonstrate who we are and so may God bless you all and may God protect our troops thank you very much Mr President spoke to president Trump yesterday what did you and what did he tell you sir Mr Mr President shifting our campaign strategy Mr presid President do you regret well President Biden there telling us uh exactly uh the situation at the moment he did say that he will be speaking later on today uh from the White House and uh just to uh put some some more bits to this uh we have the opportunity now to speak with uh Mark schnap us lawyer I we give Mark another uh couple of minutes or so to get himself ready uh just to um recount really what the importance of uh Joe Biden there started off by talking obviously about the former fire chief who died at that Pennsylvania uh rally Corey comparator who was a um fire chief in Philadelphia and one of their Heroes and um he did it to by um falling down on top of his family to keep them safe he also talked about uh what he’s going to do a three-point plan now that will involve uh the the highest investigation but a swift investigation even though there was no information he said at this time on the motive of that particular attack it will though he said be a swift in investigation and we must not lose sight of who we are as Americans there’s no place for violence not whoever we are it is Unity we will debate and disagree but straight away uh through my head of security and others we will be looking at the status of security immediately for the Republican convention which starts tomorrow to Aid every possibility obviously that that can go ahead and in the longer term but still in the short term and something that he still uh has said that he wants to share with all citizens of the United States is a swift independent review as to exactly what has happened here as I said uh if you’re just joining us they still have uh no information at all on the motive of all the affiliations of uh the young man who is uh being named as a 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks identified as the shooter so uh that’s uh what we’ve heard so far uh we just a couple of other pieces news Downing Street said an hour or so ago that uh s Dharma had spoken to Donald Trump this afternoon and Joe Biden of course had already reiterated earlier on uh that he had spoken um to Donald Trump as well uh there of of course um going to be uh plenty more this evening as it moves on we’ve got plenty of sport to come with you as well but we’re hoping that Mark schnap will be with us in a in a couple of moments or so but meanwhile we are still talking football here as well talk sport the place to be for full commentary with the boys uh kickoff is at 8:00 and the buildup if you want it of course uh with Adrien Darman the brilliant team already in place in the Berlin Stadium tonight um but for us Ben Jacobs football journalist out there Ben as you mentioned there there’s um as we expected for England as you said but and with Luke Shaw which was expected in many ways with Kieran trippier but I always feel having watched so many games of GIS Southgate tenure with England in some ways uh it’s all about um uh what we do if we score first and that is not to go into asell yeah exactly and also they’ve been behind so often if they’re behind against Spain then it’s going to be a lot harder to come back from that death of sit so Score first kill off the game would allow us to all breathe a bit easier but it’s not going to be that routine against the best side in the tournament in practice it’s the kind of final where if you’d have said it before the tournament you’d have called England the favorites but watching Spain I think that there’s very little to choose between the teams but England are going to have to find a gear to go up that change is very interesting Luke Shaw coming in for Kieran tripier it was to a degree expected if Shaw was 100% fit but when you get right to the final you’re comparing a leader in tripan who might be able to deal with lamin yamal because he’s going to try and cut inside and that would be on trippier’s stronger right foot where Shaw is the more natural left-sided player but he hasn’t played a game for club or country since February so an interesting selection there and of course from Spain’s point of view it’s very much the starting 11 that we anticipated so the atmosphere is now building England are massively outnumbering the Spanish fans so it will feel like they’ve got a bit of Home Advantage well it will one of the other things that that for me though is important that Luke Shaw is there now it’s not we’ve got to start thinking about what we can do I think it’s been one of the problems for England at this tournament is that they’ve they they’ve sort of not really believed what they told us they were before this tournament started in many ways yeah and it’s a strange one because if they go on and Win It by hook or by crook even if it’s another the way you win these tournaments exactly but then you forget about the little details and all we remember is an iconic overhead kick of Bas Baya sacka incredible strike and olle Watkins Super Sub goal and it sort of adds to this Hollywood narrative or fairy tale which is why Gareth Southgate and the build up to this game wanted not to speak about fairy tales or is fate with you and just focus on this game and ultimately England’s best chance of winning it is improving again and then the tournament as we look back on it will appear to be England getting better with every game so 45 minutes in the first half against the Netherlands if they put that in for 90 minutes they’ll win the tournament and their first male major tournament on foreign soil ever but if they don’t turn up for 90 minutes then they’ll be well beaten by a Spain side they’re about the only side at this Euros that have really been a joy to watch various other contenders like France even Germany have flattered to deceive but as you rightly say it’s about whose identity is going to be strong ly implemented onto this game because Spain loveed to attack and it leaves gaps so England have got a real opportunity to get space in wide areas and I think the game’s going to be one or lost with those four wide players it’s either going to be sacka or foden or nicoo Williams or Lam yamal and whoever is the hero out of those four will Define who wins this final it’s going to be very interesting one or two of the England player still with a little bit to prove uh to me as well but Ben you’ve set it up perfectly for you for us tonight Ben Jacobs with all the very latest from Berlin on that final which is just under 45 minutes away it’s England just having made the one change if you’re just joining us Luke Shaw is in for Kiran Tripper he’ll play alongside rice M wi sacka with um up front Harry Kane and foden and Bellingham just behind it’s going to be a big night talk sport has it all for you as we speak and in just a moment or so uh we are going to speak more having heard from uh the American President Joe Biden on the very latest over uh the shooting in Pennsylvania yesterday and March knap us lawyer will join us next here on talk [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] Ken’s penalty a lot of controversy around it whether it was a feel or not it’s a tricky one my first feeling was it’s not a penalty but having said that if that was committed Outside The Penalty Box the referee would have up straight away so it’s a tricky one it’s a it’s a har penalty to accept for any team but it looks like we’ve got our name on the trophy and we’ve had one or two late winners we’ve had the roller coaster ride and that’s gone in our in our way in our Direction so long may continue whether they win or not should Gareth Southgate get on nud should he be sir Gareth I don’t think that’s the question it should be sir GTH I think the biggest question is let’s win the trophy and let gal stay on for the next couple of years and try and win the world cup and then we’ll see what happens after that final question Tony do we need a bank holiday on Monday to perhaps sleep it all off well let’s hope so right I’m sure celebrate but if it’s a win as I’ve said many time before what a result for the country what a a lift and what a motivation for us to go forward with everything regarding England and the UK across the UK on dab Plus on YouTube on the app on your mobile the home of Common Sense this is talk and a very good evening welcome to the Sunday nightclub we’re going to keep your eye up today with what happens in Berlin England against Spain in the final of the Euros 2024 gets underway in just under 40 minutes from now England have named one change for just joining us Luke Shaw takes over on the left hand side defensively uh instead of Kiran uh trippier and it’s all the same really for the Spanish side as well if you want to follow all of the buildup to that and the full commentary talk sport is the place to be with the team that will have full commentary uh from 8:00 tonight uh we’ve got plenty more sport to come as the evening goes on we’re going to be looking at the Open golf championship which takes place at Royal TR next week delighted that Jeremy thale will be part of that with us uh we uh will be speaking more about England and the referees will be joining us as well Keith hackit and Mark haly uh went off to the final days Cricket as it turned out at Lords this week and the first test against uh the West Indies for England Neil Burns and Derek Pringle will be with us to talk plenty of cricket as the evening goes on and um WI so uh sort out exactly what happened today with uh Spain getting the first of what they hope is a massive sporting double after alcaraz saw off today jovic in three sets it was quite extraordinary really uh to win back two back Wimbledon titles he’s only won two uh jovic himself was after his ninth title which at Wimbledon which would of course have been a record Joe Biden has just been speak speaking and um he has been talking obviously to journalists at the White House in the aftermath of the shooting at Trump’s rally in Pennsylvania uh I’m sincerely grateful that he’s he means obviously Donald Trump is doing well and recovering he said at the start of the statement today he also added that he and Trump had a short and good conversation last night after the incident and the president has said he’s directed an independent review of the National Security at and into yesterday’s rally to assess exactly what did happen adding its findings will be shared with the American public and as swiftly as possible and the President says that he will address the nation at greater length from the Oval Office at 1 a.m. UK time tonight uh I’m hoping we going to get a little bit more detail on that from our guest who obviously be listening uh to that and um we’ll we’ll come back to all of that we’re goinging back to the football are we right now yes we are um Dave bezant joins me the former England goalkeeper Dave good evening to you hi Dave can you hear me I can hear you can you hear me yeah that’s it absolutely perfect got you loud and clear now well we’ve been here before of course on a couple of occasions uh with England first time in a major final away from our Shores and our home after uh the debark in the end three years ago against the Italians and before that the the win on home soil in 66 at Wembley against as it was then West Germany I don’t make England favorites tonight I think this is a really tight one for them Spain have grown as well in this championship and have some real quality this is a it’s a big night for all concerned yeah it’s going to be a tough game um you know we were were pre- tournament favorites but obviously as uh the tournament started we didn’t really produce whereas Spain have done so they’ve been unbeaten in every game we won every game so uh and they they look they look a force going forward um and uh the good thing is we’ve started to improve which is uh the big big plus the fact that we as we’ve grown through the tournament I think the players have grown more confident in themselves and each other and I think that the managers grown more confident in in his ability you know the fact that we was very critical of him earlier on about his substitutions and how late he was making them and he should have probably made more but now you look at the substitutions he has made in the last couple of games and they’ve definitely been very very effective and and probably won US the games yeah I mean proactive that everyone was calling out for rather than reactive actually it has been though very much in GIS southgate’s makeup as uh manager of this and coach of this side over many uh many years now is that um he he wants to somehow when it gets to these moments have what we hold I mean it would be fascinating to see this time if unless hopefully England if they go one up in this game but that they don’t retreat that’s what I felt was so disappointing at Wembley three years ago a second goal against the Italians on that occasion they were on the ropes they’ have been gone but we let them back into the game and uh they found us out after that and I don’t want that to sort of repeat itself tonight against SP should uh we go ahead yeah 100% I mean the system we’re playing tonight replicates that final three years ago you know the the goal we scored went from One Wing back to the other Wing back you know Tripp cross to short putting the goal and as you said then we reverted to rather than playing a three at the back we sunk to a five at the back we was deep in Midfield and we just allowed the Italians to come on top of us and you know I was actually saying you know maybe it’d be better if we went one n down because we seem to respond when we go a goal down you know we’re not as Progressive and active going forward as as we do when we go one goal down obviously we have to chase the game and start you know get ourselves back in it but the fact that when we we went one year down against the Dutch we really started to play we did and they um look like the the other best side that we have played so far Harry Kane has obviously he he had a back injury with that was well documented at the end of his season in Munich and he’s not really been the Harry kanane we’ve expected but he’s there again and I think uh important for him to be playing his part in this tonight yeah definitely I mean he’s not as you said he’s not been hurricane where we used to see him you know he’s he’s not been in the boxing now for my likings he’s been dropping fairly deep he’s been playing his role as a team player more or less in our unit when we lose the ball but you know he’s just not as you been able to get forward into the into the boxing enough but he’s still joint leading goals score in in the tournament so um it’s important to have our Talis and there he is our our captain he is our important player to have on a pitch and but as South Kate stand so he’s not frightened to say well Harry you know I’ve been looking for a little bit more from you I’m not getting it I’m going to have to make a change and and the good thing with with the the changes he’s made it depends on the opposition and how the opposition are playing like the duts were playing a little bit higher so he brought OE Watkins on rather than than Ivan Tony who Tony plays as similar role and position to Kane he likes to drop and play facing the ball rather than Watkins is on the shoulder more and looks looks to go in behind so you know he his substitutions have obviously dependent on how the opposition are playing I’ve been delighted with foden I I wish Bellingham would just uh realize that you know he’s got everything in front of him still yes we know that he’s uh a fantastic Prospect and more come on just do do your work don’t don’t pose we don’t want you any you don’t need any of that from him in this tournament now and I think as well sacka for me has been the other outstanding player yeah he’s been brilliant and he’s had to be because you know his position you’ve got people like um Cole Palmer who’s a fantastic season who comes on in that position likes to come in from the from the right as SAA does um but I think the other night what you said foden and I think foden was outstanding the first half he was rotating he rotated with saak he rot with Bellingham and I think that’s what you’d probably want to see Bell Belling a little bit more is rotational with other players allowing other players to get in a position where he’s playing at the moment because it’s probably not belling’s best position although he’s played there the whole tournament you know I think that having that rotation with foden really worked the other day and uh and hopefully we see a lot more of it tonight there’s going to be some work isn’t there for England down their left and the Spanish right with rodri yamal of course the sensation and marata yeah it’s going to be difficult night and Luke Shaw’s got the nod tonight I don’t know whether that’s because tripier is not 100% it’s actually surprised me I thought he might have started with tripier and and said you know I’ll give you a half a game and then later on we get more balance in our team especially the fact that the Winger likes to come in on on his left foot and that would be coming into trippier’s right foot which is his stronger foot so um yeah interesting maybe there is a slight injury or problem with trippier I think we we all think whatever we’ve thought about the way they’ve played in some of these games and what we thought about G Southgate uh tonight the next 90 minutes I want them just to to go out and show what they can do as a side and bring it home yeah I mean we’ve got to where we have done by hook or by crook somehow we’re there um but we are there as you said we we’re in a final of the of the Euros um you know we know we’re going to have to perform better to beat a Spanish side that have performed in this tournament um but we have I said grown into the tournament Players have got stronger got better comfortable in their surroundings and it’s a huge game for them and like we’re saying they can they can make history tonight and of course as a when when Club at Wimbledon for you playing in a major final which was a massive occasion at Wembley not only did you make a penalty save uh which was uh historic also part of a side that sore off opposition that you weren’t supposed to be what from what you guys did there would would you you say to the England side of today I mean it’s difficult because obviously there was a contrast in in our Styles Liverpool were unbelievable footballing team and if we tried to match them at football we we wouldn’t live with them um so we had to say to them well we feel we’re better at you and playing our style of game so you know let’s let’s mix it and see how we get on and uh 40 on a day our style came up trumps and your great historic penalty save Jordan pford uh does his business I just hope he doesn’t go walk about as he does now and again and get too excited yeah it does get a little bit worrying but you know it’s more often than not it’s when we’re in comfortable possession of the ball although we were in comfortable possession with a free kick where he nearly got done but that was nothing to do with his position that was a fact that we weren’t awake on our own free kick but um no he’s been he’s been great in his tourament he’s done what he’s had to do and his distribution has been fantastic so um and we know what he’s like on penalties yeah exactly that d it’s always great to talk to you thank you very much indeed for joining us tonight here on the Sunday nightclub on talk Dave bezant there the first man saer penalty in FA Cup Final with Wimbledon and a man who’s been very much part as a top coach and uh real interesting stuff there we’ll get back to the sport later we’re going to uh next go back to the states to find out um what uh is going to been thought about what Joe Biden has been talking about with a new independent review International Security uh following that rally uh in Pennsylvania for the U for Donald Trump and uh his party uh we’re going to be speaking finally uh I hope to Mark schnap a US lawyer who will be able to give us all the very latest [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] across the UK On Da Plus on YouTube on the app on your mobile the home of Common Sense this is talk welcome to the Sunday night club and we’ve got plenty of talk on sport later on and talk sport is the place to be tonight if you want commentary on England against Spain we’ve also heard here on talk uh from the president of the United States Joe Biden talking about what he’s going to do next with thoughts on the aftermath of the shooting at Trump rally in Pennsylvania yesterday uh before we look into what he has said about an independent review I’m delighted to say that Mark schnap us lawyer is joining us um Donald Trump has just posted an update on his truth social platform Mark so uh I I know you’ve been traveling I’m going to give you um uh the the gist of what he said uh in the last few minutes just 10 minutes or so ago based on yesterday’s terrible events I was going to delay my trip to Wisconsin and the Republican National vention by two days but have just decided that I cannot allow a shooter or potential assassin to force change to scheduling or anything else therefore I will be leaving for Milwaukee as scheduled at 3:30 p.m. today thank you uh and he signs it to djt now of course it’s the fourth uh 4-day convention starts tomorrow doesn’t it sing Republicans formerly nominate Trump as the candidate for the presidential election on the 5th of November Mar good evening yes hi uh thank you for having me and I apologize I’m in a car no apologies needed on this show yeah it uh it starts tomorrow and uh it’s tragic that this happened immediately before that and you know it just highlights the problem with gun control in the United States because this is not the first assassination attempt on a or on a on a political candidate uh more recently Steve scales a congressman was shot was shot at and you know now uh fortunately president Trump former president Trump survived the attempt but you know there’s going to be a lot of questions about how this can even happen in the first place you know I’m a former Federal prosecutor and believe me this is not going to go um you know lightly particularly Visa the SEC Secret Service how this could happen well that’s the thing and um the the president uh came on to speak uh quite swiftly this after afternoon uh and U he was uh very very firm on the importance of an independent review International Security at the rally um uh and uh I I know you won’t be surprised at that but what do you think the FBI and others have now got to do at this stage as he calls for a whole direction of an independent review of the National Security and a Swift one at that well in all honesty I don’t even know what he means by an inter an independent review I mean internally I can tell you that um secret service and I guess the FBI will uh do their own internal investigations and asked her own questions I guess what he means by an internal review is that outside those agencies particularly the Secret Service who responsible for the security of the president and other political candidates that um someone or or an agency outside those agencies will be the ones that do the review so that’s I think what he assume what he means but I look I mean this was a horrible situation where uh the first question will be is why wasn’t this avoided in the first place and um believe me there will be a lot of there are now a lot of unanswered questions ranging from who this is to how this could happen um we know that it’s a 20-year-old Thomas Matthew krooks who being identified as the shooter uh from your great experience as well are you incredulous in how close he was able to get yeah of course he had a long gun I don’t understand how anybody could do go unnoticed um when I said who who this is I don’t mean his name I meant obviously what why who who he was politically environmentally you know was he a conservative who was unhappy with Trump was he a Democrat was he just a crazy person who knows um but yeah I was totally surprised that he could get this close um and it’s like something out of a bad movie it should not have happened and there there will be a lot of accountability I mean I I know the Secret Service are being praise for their you know Swift actions and covering the president but you know the question is going to be now focused on why did this happen and and that’s GNA be you know a lot of tough questions for Donald Trump um I mean we mustn’t forget uh first of all that uh announced the former Fire Chief from Pennsylvania Cory uh compor uh is the man that has been named as having died at the event at that rally having um basically thrown himself on the rest of his family to save them and uh there there were other injuries as well is that I mean Donald Trump is going to move on from this and do what now do you expect he says he’s definitely he was going to have a TW day break but he’s now going to go straight on and carry on that’s that that’s very much in in the way I I guess that you thought he would do well yeah and you know in this odd way and no one would wish this on anybody let me be clear but in this odd way it may embolden him and you know cause people to be you know more his ra his supporters will be stronger behind him like here if you could see the images when he after he was shot he had his fist in the air yeah you know um you know like I’m okay and let’s fight on that type of uh attitude and so I think that’ll just Empower him in many ways that that fist in the air do you think that that photo in its way will rally more around with sympathy and others to get them charged for Pennsylvania to try to see whether they’re going to get him back into the White House or not yeah yeah you know I got to be candid my first impression of that scene was like I was looking at EO gima when the Marines took the hill you know that’s the kind of power that image um conveyed to me and candidly I’m not a a republican nor am I a trump supporter um but but yeah I mean you look there let me be over let me expand the question that you asked I mean there’s a lot of disappointment um in the country about President Biden right now and I I think that you know again is this going to empower um Trump more yeah I think it’ll help him in this weird way um nobody would plan it or wish it on him under any circumstances but you know he’s going to show that he’s a powerful guy that he’s Invincible you know in this um bizarre way it’ll help him that’s what I think and just finally what ises that what does that mean for the president at the moment who himself is under so much pressure because of the fragility of of him in mind and body as far as some are concerned he’s going to be speaking in depth he’s already said tonight to the nation again at the white house uh how is this going to play out for him you know him of course well I I don’t know him well but I I had uh lunch with him when he was running uh way back against um um then then candidate Obama and he was a very different guy I mean he was very chatty um my then girlfriend sat with his wife Jill and they were wonderful I mean you know Joe Biden was very chatty I mean I I made the mistake of saying Hey Joe you talk too much but he was talking a lot he was very um energetic and you know but he wasn’t the same guy that was on uh presented himself in the debate or even the news conference um afterwards um so he’s coming across as a fragile guy and now Trump is going to be the Survivor of an attempt on his life hardly a hardly a fragile guy and just uh finally and thank you for your time tonight on this how does this make the two of them play out with the situations that we were thinking of before this attack yesterday what what does Biden now have to do with uh Trump immediately getting into this such an important 4-day rally for the Republican nomination just to be confirmed is that is he going to get even further ahead of the game it I think Trump will go further ahead um that’s that’s the uh that’s what’s going to happen um look I there’s a lot of pressure in the United States for um Biden to resign and to resign gracefully but um you know he is my opinion for whatever it’s worth he’s putting his own ego ahead of what’s best for the United States um we are really in a political crisis right now in my judgment I think that um you have two very very different candidates roughly the same age one is presenting a position of uh strength power the fist uh rising in the air um you know um and then Joe Joe Biden’s coming across as frail know forgetful um and you know kind of a shadow of his former self so look I think we are in a very very odd position in the United States right now very difficult challenging for for voters um and I will tell you um that there’s been a lack of enthusiasm for Joe Biden to go forward uh on many many levels including my own um and you know George Clooney the actor uh wrote a very powerful editorial in the New York Times about Biden’s continued candidacy you know so is Joe Biden asking for an independent review you know to to take place that doesn’t that’s not going to mean anything politically he’s going to have to do that because that was the right thing to do and I want to just add one of the thing that because you Dr you brought it up it’s very tragic that a spectator so you know this fire chief who went there former fire chief who went there to attend a political rally who did nothing you know who was there as a spectator voicing support for a political position who got shot in front of his family what a horrible thing to happen and so at some point I would hope as a former Federal prosecutor that sometimes these two po politicians would do something about gun control in United States that’s my personal opinion and that’s anyway that’s a great uh finish from you as well thank you very much indeed Mark for joining us tonight with your thoughts on the very latest just to let you know that if you want to follow more on this story there will be more because Joe Biden has announced that he will be speaking to the nation um at 1:00 a.m. hour time in the morning so uh if you want to be following on from that there’ll be talk and all sorts of opportunities for you to listen or obviously watch uh if you want to later on we’re going to get back to our sport very shortly we’re 30 minutes away or so from from the final in Germany in Berlin between England and Spain and uh we’re building up to that with lots of other sport to come to [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] Ken’s penalty a lot of controversy around it whether it was a feel or not it’s a tricky one my first feeling was it’s not a penalty but having said that if that was committed Outside The Penalty Box the referee would have blown up straight away so it’s a tricky one it’s a it’s a har penalty to accept for any team but it looks like we’ve got our name on the trophy and we’ve had one or two late winners we’ve had the roller coaster ride and that’s gone in our in our way in our Direction so long may continue whether they win or not should Gareth Southgate get on nighted should he be sir Gareth I don’t think that’s the question should be sir gal I think the biggest question is let’s win the trophy and let gal stay on for the next couple of years and try and win the world cup and then we’ll see what happens after that final question Tony do we need a bank holiday on Monday to perhaps sleep it all off well let’s hope so right I’m sure celebrate but if it’s a win as I’ve said many a time before what a result for the country what a a lift and what a motivation for us to go forward with everything regarding England and the UK across the UK on dab Plus on YouTube on the app on your mobile the home of Common Sense this is T very good evening to you welcome to the Sunday nightclub and we’re just under 10 minutes away from kickoff in Berlin between England and Spain and the winners of course are the European Champions and uh Keith and Mark our two referees will be with us Mark good evening to you Keith good evening to you as well I haven’t got long tonight for this bit but I know that Keith you’re going to be very much part of uh of all of this going forward as well you’re going to keep a expert eye on us uh first of all um he’s a young referee Francois uh letexier uh he began refereeing in 2015 he’s only 35 you like him yes I do uh he’s he had uh three games so far in this tournament um he’s he’s already had Spain so he’ll be aware what I did see I think it was Croatia Albania where he demonstrated a very high level of fitness and movement but also a degree of common sense in his handling of the match but hey there’s nothing like experience and this is uh this will come as a bit of a shock to him this is a big big game in any format and it’ll be a tough game yeah Mark um talk me through then how as a referee he’s got to feel his way in early on and what he’s got to do and not do in that first 10 15 minutes yeah listen he’s going to be no very nervous um as as any referee he’s like any player um and what what he’s got to do when is when he gets that first opportunity to stamp his authority on the game he has to do it otherwise well players will if he doesn’t do that players will I can get away with with with Reckless challenges now but the other hand is is that you you don’t want to go in too early so if he can manage situations that’s what he’s got to do um as we saw with the Anthony Taylor um in the uh Spain Germany game where he he should have now he should have gone in and cautioned Tony Cruz very early on because he didn’t do that players felt they could get away with a lot more challenges than that they should have done and and then we ended up with 14 15 yellow cards and obviously a double yellow card so he’s got to go there he’s got to manage it he’s got to talk to the players he’s got to use a little bit of common sense because he he doesn’t want to be the talking point he doesn’t want to talking Bo and what we got to remember is he was he was second to Clement Turpin I think Clement Turpin is the number one in France and he him and Danielo were the standout officials in this tournament and obviously they went for for um for for franchise and so he fully deserves his appointment but he’s he’s got to just he’s got a referee what’s in front of and he’s got he’s got to use a little bit of degree of common sense so we’re all we’re all we’re all here ready in the Hy home to bring the yeah hello hello look I I was I’ve got to ask you Mark and you know I’ve got to ask you about this what’s the cap that this is my uh this is representing my country abroad as being a FIFA referee and every every official at uh at um you know referees abroad for and represents their country always gets wed C ke ke should had one so I’m surprised he’s not got e on as well yeah well there we are but uh what do you think really but both of you I mean Mark you you Keith’s going to stay with us so I shall ask you more as we go on but Mark from you can are England in the position that you think that this is a a match that they can win are they slight underdogs or or where are we listen to tournament football is totally different we know that and I think they they they you’ve got they’ve got it just about right I think if we can up to our game just you know 25% I think we can do this if we don’t then I think Spain are going to be favorites but it’s going to be it’s going to be a a terrific game and I hope we come out on top but if we can perform to what we you know what we we know we can do I think we can run out winners it’s going to be an important one this isn’t it for referees assistants uh Keith and for um old old V to come because attention tonight we don’t want them mocking about and hanging around too long no I think we’ve uh we’ve got to hold hold our nerve as match officials obviously out on in those guys that are out in the middle I do think that I hope that this tournament is not going to be decided by a v decision that’s my fear yeah uh and uh he’s calling out for it I think I think we will get V controversy uh sadly but you know in my heart of hearts so hope the game goes well and we’re talking about the players and the quality of players on the field of play and that some of our England players actually perform to the very very top level that they’re capable of doing it is going to be Mark uh lifechanging for the England players if they are to win we’ve only experienced this of course in the past with uh uh the heroes of 1966 uh at this sort of level uh with anything like like that what I mean is is lifechanging moment for these guys but on a on a on a wider note as well you know if if the interest is right with the football surely this may give real opportunity for referees and other people involved with the game to come step forward and say I want a bit of the action in the future in this game now well absolutely it lifts the whole nation this what what the England team have done is it lifts the nation it brings everybody together it’s just not referees it’s it’s young it’s young players young footballers at the age of you know six seven eight nine 10 they look at this and it gives them that appetite to go and play the game and enjoy enjoy the game so listen let’s hope that our boys can come away with a title we were unlucky when we played Italy back at wemy it’s just hope that we can come out and we can win this and it and it just does so much for everybody in in England yeah I don’t want us to think too much about the opposition here Keith I want us to think about what we can do not what they can do to us yeah we’ve got in Phil foden and others some outstanding quality players we’ve got a I think a fairly solid defense we just haven’t got to panic um and the other side is we’ve got to use the substitutes and we’ve got to use them wisely uh because this is a game that has the potential of going to extra time and penalty kicks and that’s always got to be at the back of the mind of the manager yeah no I think right M okay Mark I’m going to give you the final word here at the moment as Keith is staying uh with us and uh are you comfortable enough to think that England have got enough about them now to win this one yeah I think I think we’re going to win this to 2-1 I think I think the team I think the team that makes the less mistakes and takes their chances will win this game and I’m hoping it’s going to be us it’s amazing the flag is now gone from behind back again I know I know that’s great good to see you put the flag down let’s have a look at you as well come on hi hi there hi Lucy Eng who who who who do you think’s going to win tonight and who’s going to score that goal for England I think it’s gonna be one one I think we’re gonna win on penalties oh oh well that that’s classic isn’t it then refereeing right to the very the very final whistle brilliant stuff good to talk to the two of you and um as as far as you’re concerned as well Keith we’ll speak more as the evening goes on I can tell you that both England and Spain have already managed to sing with pride their national anthems they’re getting ready to play the game and we are going to be talking about golf a little later on in the show as well and here’s a big moment his second Big Win he won on the PGA for the first time this year and now Rob McIntyre has just won needing to Birdie the last at the Genesis Scottish open to win it and he’s done it in front of his home crowd what a week it has been for the young man man he’s got trun to come next week which we’ll be talking about but an absolutely extraordinary couple of rounds for him and he’s playing magnificent golf at the moment and thoroughly deserves it so a Scottish win in Scotland an England win in Germany now that would be a nice double after at Wimbledon a Spanish win there for alcaras means that we’re hoping it’s not a Spanish double uh when it comes to the football tonight we’re going to be talking rugby we’re going to be talking cricket and of course keeping you right up to date with everything else that matters when it comes to the football uh you’re very welcome as always here on the Sunday night club I’m Mark sagers back next in a moment [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] across the UK on dab Plus Plus on YouTube on the app on your mobile the home of Common Sense this is [Music] talk well here on the Sunday night club if you’re staying with us got plenty of uh really good Cricket chat we’re also going to be talking more about the Open golf England’s rugby uh in New Zealand as well Jeremy Dale with his look ahead to next week’s Open championship at Royal trun and anything else that should happen a break don’t forget you can follow full commentary of the final it’s underway already no early goals or anything to tell you about really just yet but talk sport the place to be commentary there from Stuart Pier alongside Jim proword on talk sport Derek Pringle is with us to talk Cricket good evening to you Derek evening Mark well the first thing to say I went to Lords on uh Friday for the uh first time in in in quite some time didn’t see an awful lot of cricket actually but just saw the uh the end of uh uh James Anderson’s uh run in the game and also I was really pleased to see Livingston as well from The Pavilion end because uh what a what a way out and what a debut that was a real sort of coming together I thought that was quite a good story on the final morning of this first test absolutely I mean what what a player what a servant to English Cricket Jimmy Anderson’s been I mean I don’t think anyone will match his his uh his wickets and and and the amount of games he’s played uh W purely because you know test Cricket won’t be played as as often in the future I suspect but Gus ainson came in with a bang and you know that kind of renewal you know it’s pleasing to see what A’s got to do now of course is a few games together because he’s he’s had a few injuries during his career and uh he probably hasn’t got many games under his belt but he bowls superbly well in that touch match yeah just finally on uh Jimmy Anderson there that was uh what I mean I know he’s had his injuries but he had a rhythm that meant that he he was able to look after his body in the way some of the taller bigger uh opening Bowlers haven’t been able to well incredibly physically robust I mean the perfect kind of build if you’re going to you know get a a fastish bow I mean he was an Express Pace Jimmy but uh he was quick enough and uh when you couple that with you know the skills he had at swinging the ball and and and seeming the ball and bowling wobble and this and that um you know a superb performer um I was Marvel though Mark at the kind of the mental resilience required to get up day after day I mean cly you know after 10 years of doing it but he’s gone for 21 incredible no no I couldn’t agree with you more it’s quite interesting as well I mean a lot of the people around me and every was saying oh H he gets his last Wicket here H he does this he had the CT and bold chance it would have been lovely but I think that that the the professional side of the Sportsman they think other other other ways to the fans that watch it sometimes don’t they well I can trust that last year Stuart broad biding F at the oval I mean he you know as if his script script was written by his fairy godmother yeah six off off his last shot in in touch cricket and a wicket off his last ball which won the match against Australia I mean Jimmy did have that chance and although the kind of retiree in him saiding well I’m just glad to you know contributed to England win I think the the competitor in him is still probably berating himself for dropping that that chance yeah I think it’s one of the other things to talk about now even though there there’s another couple of tests to come the next one underway in Trent bridge on Friday against the West Indies where where is West Indies cricket and where is test Cricket if there aren’t that many nations that are really going to to play it as much as they have done in the past it was it was quite disappointing for them that a lot of their top players want to play white ball cricket and not the red well that’s nothing new I don’t think and in fact I would say over the past I don’t know decade they’ve actually always played quite well against England I mean rewind two years and they actually beat us over in the West Indies it was the end of Joe rot cap brought brought that to an end but they um they seem to have changed the batting order since then I mean I recognize only one player in the in their top six the keeper the same and the bowling larg the same but the batting Seas have changed incredibly and of course they’ve lost Shay hope who wants today again but you know go to play white ball Cricket in the franchises etc etc simply because there’s more money there yeah sure and I mean that’s always been one of the problems I even remember the really great West Indies sides weren’t sort of comparatively as well paid as the rest of the test playing Nations I think um I read in either VI one of Viv Richard’s books or Michael holding’s book you know that they uh it motivated them to play well because they relied on winning bonus money you know win money win a lot and you get and you get paid a fit of bonus where where is test Cricket do you think at the moment I mean everybody there are certain people for me rushing quickly to say you know it’s not going to be played as much it’s not going to be this it’s not going to be that I’d still like that this great International test it can’t just be the an Ash’s series every every other year or whatever it would be we we do need some more test Cricket still I think so I mean I still think it’s the it’s the greatest format I mean it’s the one that challenges players the most but of course you know can you blame players for wanting inverted comm’s easier life I mean you know I remember Dale stain when he first played in the ipel he said look it’s it’s it’s money for old rope you know 40 doesn’t matter if you get smashed around I mean in test Cricket he’s going to have to buy probably two two or three spells of about eight eight or six six to eight overs each and that and that’s much harder work I mean I think that is the the real difference isn’t it these days I mean when when you were playing I mean it was obviously great to get to the the top and and play uh a fantastic test Cricket against uh terrific uh opposition uh there was a real structure though we knew exactly what was happening at that time and um it was you know the county Championship was big three days rather than the four and then the four came in and the one day Internationals but there was a real structure to the cricket and we all understood it and that now of course has seemingly gone out the window and and I understand why people if they’re going to make all their money in the space of 10 years by not playing anywhere near as much why they some of them want to do it absolutely but I guess ultimately I mean you know cricketers are much more enriched these days and it’s it’s from TV money and ultimately TV will decide I think yeah what happens if they if they want more white ball Cricket that’s the way it’s going to have to go yeah I think it’s a great shame um as I say I think it’s it’s the greatest challenge still in the game uh and for me one really worth you know writing about I mean you know since quitting Cricket um 30 years ago I’ve I’ve written about it and uh test Cricket is worth writing about and Red Bull Cricket generally but you know white Cricket not really no no bit of Smash and grab I think Neil Burns is joining us right now Delight to say hi Neil good evening gentlemen well it’s good to have you alongside us as well we’ve uh I was at Lords for the first time in a long time actually and it was I tell you how long ago it was I was at the top of the Warner stand there and uh looking down I thought well the ground’s a long way away here um but magnificent Viewpoint and U two great friends who invited me along but we didn’t see much much cricket and it’s sort of up you know it was quite a sad and I hope the rest of this series Neil’s not going to be quite like that well I thought it was a great occasion for James Anderson it was and I thought Lords as a cricket Crown look Splendid but the standard of the West Indies cricket was very disappointing and I felt quite sorry for one or two of them because it’s a very difficult world to be developing your skills in um playing at The Homer Cricket against some top quality Bowlers when you’ve got limited experience not only of test match cricket but of playing in English conditions and it’s I don’t really because we don’t even have what we used to have in uh Derek your time I suppose I mean there were obviously a lot of West Indies West West Indies cricketers who played uh in some great sides I mean you have played with them as well Neil at Somerset weren’t you and and what have you and then uh even down in the minor counties and some of the northern um professional leagues the West Indies were over here for the summer U even if it was only playing which was still Cricket to get used to conditions in this in this country but that that sort of doesn’t really happen anymore does it uh doesn’t no uh and because I guess there’s so many uh T20 leagues around the world that you know it sort of covers um you know not only the West Indies team or the best sort of say 15 players he probably expands to the taking out the best 30 players so uh I don’t think C are going to want someone below that or sign him on but you know if you’re struggling uh with K experience Etc you’d think you you’d agree to maybe playing a few more tour games yeah I mean I don’t know they may have asked for more I don’t know um but you know to play one game and then go in and expect to compete against the you know an England side played pretty well in their own conditions recently I mean it’s ridiculous yeah look I couldn’t agree with you more no gos to tell you about thank you both very much indeed if uh you hoping to watch the football as well tonight Neil I know that you and your family are great football fans too and uh uh nothing too much has happened so far in in this one um we started off there I was just starting with Derek waiting for you to come on and talk more about the the England players and the and the new setup they’ve got Neil and everything and um one of the first uh little little bits and pieces I’d like to talk about was actually um how lean and mean Ben Stokes looks he looks a different man he’s I mean he looks he like he looked to me as if he would could easily look like a 1500 meter uh runner who’ got a real chance in the Olympics coming up with that sort of slightly gaunt look that you don’t look as well as you actually feel well the England cricket team is so much better off for having Ben Stokes as a gen an all rounder again and I think he was um at risk of having to justify his place in the team without um his bowling as one of the the strings to his bow in that his batting I think was disappointing in India but how the balance of the team improves uh with him bowling is significant um so full credit to the medical team who have a got uh back fit again and B also it says a great deal about Ben Stokes as an individual that he’s bed a lot for darham and and bow very well um and he’s got himself primed for this series and I think an England bowling attack with Anderson wokes and and Stokes in it makes it much easier for the likes of Gus Atkinson or Dylan Penington to come in uh not only just on debut but in their first few games and find their feet in a strong bowling attack it’s a far easier process to introduce emerging Talent into professional sporting teams if you’ve got top Quality Senior professionals and if the team is in a winning phase yeah that you make some really good points uh with that an England side that will need to be tested now from here on in uh I’ve heard from Derek your your thoughts as a a keeper as well with the way that Atkinson old I thought he what I saw of him from The Pavilion end on that final morning was you know a smooth strong run up and a a good good pace and uh you know somebody that that really deserved and and did what he had to against the opposition which is always the thing to do well the thing that struck me most of all about Gus Atkinson’s bowling was it seemed reasonably effortless now Derek and all the fast Bowlers in the country will no doubt tell me how much effort does go into bowling but when it appears to look effortless like Jeffer Archer um and as Gus Atkinson looked this week it doesn’t seem like you’re straining every senu in your body um the other thing that really struck me is how well he maintained his Line bowling from The Pavilion end it’s not always easy with the slope but the fact he’s got some extra Pace um will make a real difference to this England team yeah that’s a good point well look uh just one other thing Joe root was talking and I understand this uh in manyways uh talking about how he doesn’t feel that that the test Cricket should have been played during Co with all the other problems uh back in 20 2122 and um I I really understand that in some ways because of the covid restrictions because of one or two of the mental health issues for a lot of sportsmen and women at that time that um there’s there’s a thought really I think from Joe here that we you know we go again and we start again and we somehow have got to get that last one out of our our system it was a difficult time you know wasn’t it for cricketers all around because they were mostly uh very well behaved and therefore the bubbles they were in were very difficult and long Derek indeed they were of course but uh I think it’s a bit of naivity on Jo part there because you know if you don’t play cricket the TV companies the broadcasts are going to want their money back and therefore you don’t get paid I mean it’s pretty simple they were given a chance to keep you know the bank balances high so I wouldn’t complain too much us him no okay I’ll get that one what about Mark Wood was you would have added him as they have done now for the second test in place of Anderson well he’s a fantastic bowler when he keep when he keeps it going I was just surprised surprised how he didn’t have a good World Cup I mean that surprised me I thought he’d blow those uh those associate teams away but he didn’t so I don’t know um he’s P really well past against Australians let’s hope he does it against the wor IND team yeah yeah is Neil back with us or are we still just setting him up but I think he’s there we’re just getting him back at the moment so do you think that that this is a good now balanced England side Derek well I think they’re still searching they I think you know Rob I think his big plan is to you know do everything to try and win in Australia that’s that’s the sort of you know gra as it were to win in austr we do it so infrequently that needs to be something done and I think that’s what really made their mind up about tapping James Anderson on the shoulder I mean in the past Jimmy’s been over there five times been on The Winning Side once so it’s not as if you know he’s essential to our our our Chan of winning in Australia so I think they decided they want to try and find uh an attack that can do that they want to try a few names out get them together get them playing together get them confident and then hopefully they’ll do the business over in Australia in 18 months time Neil one of the the things that I I really liked from young Jamie Smith and Neil I’ll talk to you about this if I may uh as well saying that how his teammate folks uh that one of the men he’s replaced obviously at at the moment really gave him an insight and helped him uh even though he sort of taken his place and I I I thought that was really good keeper camaraderie uh that was quality well Ben folks is a Class Act both with the gloves on and as a young man and I think when that story emerged this week it was confirmation of what a top quality individually he is um but I think it’s been difficult for Ben folks um and it’ be quite interesting to see what happens when Jamie Smith goes back to play for sur now do England effectively uh demand that s allow the England Wicket keeper to get more experience in first class Cricket uh and if they make that request you know will s feel that it’s none of their business and they’re entitled to select who they want and if that is the case then what does Ben folks do it might be that he decides to to leave s and and plow a lone Faro in terms of trying to get on where it all started Bern well it would be lovely if that happened um and I I I have a sense that that could happen so maybe you’re closer to Fletch and Gucci than me but I think that would be a good move for both parties yeah no it it it suddenly would what was what what did you think I mean he they scored runs as well which was important for him in the in the the Test match whoever it was against Neil it was I think there were two things that really stood out for me number one England were in a spot of bother when he came to the crease and lost some important wickets in quick succession and I thought he got himself in and played the situation with skill and intelligence and revealed a good temperament but the part about his game that I was really impressed with was how he put the foot to the floor and and really you know drove the car fast when the situation required it and that kind of Versatility is really important to having a wick keeper if he’s going to be batting at number six number seven um we’re going to come back and talk playy more Cricket in the next few minutes with Neil and with Derek look ahead to the second test at Trent Bridge some of the other big cricketing stories at the moment uh you’re being very patient with me guys there’s no goals to tell about so far again the game between Spain and England and uh well in now to the uh first half not quite Midway through but uh we’ll wait and see and uh we’ll keep you up today but if you really want the football uh if you’re out and about or you’re in your car then it’s talk sport is the place to be but plenty more Cricket here on the Sunday night club on talk [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] K’s penalty along controversy around it whether it was a feel or not it’s a tricky one my first feeling was it’s not a penalty but having said that if that was YouTube on the app on your mobile the home of Common Sense this is talk well have a good evening to you welcome to the show for just joining us uh just been the first yellow card I think it was for Harry Kane if uh I’m reading it right I’m not sure not I’m not yes it was Harry Kane has just got a yellow card the referee having a word with both of them at the moment no gos to tell you about in that game uh brilliant win I have to say on the golfing front uh today from uh Rob McIntyre who’s one at the Scottish open he needed birly on the last and he sunk it uh terrific for him on the way to what has been extraordinary season so far and off to trun next week we’re talking cricket at the moment though with Derek Pringle and with Neil Burns let’s talk a little bit about the blast if we uh we may at the moment and um firstly uh Essex still you got an opportunity to reach the the quarterfinals um it was uh one of those sort of whack bang games against s uh latest up Derek afraid I didn’t I didn’t take notes of that one I’m afraid Mark I’m sure you didn’t what I mean the blast is not your sort of thing really is it it’s not really now I mean I’ve been focusing on the test match I was down at LS myself like you so um no uh um listen I I think eics I think they they’ve blown hot and cold over the years getting to finals day and I think part of that is is that when they play home games at Chelsea it’s such a small ground that one action by either their own player or the opposition can determine the game because it’s such a small ground I think when they get on bigger grounds they’re they’re a better T20 team actually yeah I understand exactly what you say about that I mean there’s there South there’s plenty more games to come uh one or two of the sides have already qualified for this what about NE you Neil where do you feel with is this the if there was to be and I know it’s faren cricket and everything but it if there was one thing that we could do with changing um the fixture uh board in in some way would this be the one that would go in your mind as well I don’t think so I think the competition that’s most at risk is the 50 over competition and I think it will probably still continue but might be downgraded in its status um but I think the T20 Blast has proved to be very successful and I think if it had the level of financial support that the hund had had yeah then it could have really been grow um and now that the fact that it’s been shoehorned into an earlier part of the season it’s less attractive as a family night out um when it’s played in during the evenings where the temperature is quite cool um but to take Derek’s point about grounds I think the successful T20 teams who over the years have been most recently s Hampshire and Somerset have proven themselves to be very adaptable uh and they can win both at home and away um Essex currently have got a couple of magical T20 cricketers in that um Paul Walter can win a game on his own Adam rossington potentially can get them off to a flying start and Michael Pepper’s performance and to getting 120 off you know 40 balls is is pretty remarkable um so having these kind of exceptional bull Strikers you know makes a difference but I still think that the biggest shift that needs to happen if a team wants to excel in T20 cricket is the raising of standards of the bowlers I think if you have really skillful Bowlers or Bowlers who can still Bowl very fast or people that bowl really accurate Yorkers or a top quality spin bowler um it’s the bowlers who make a difference and I continue to believe that people who are just ball Strikers won’t succeed consistently against top quality Bowlers so Neil with all of that in mind and where we are I was speaking to Derek about there as well you know the the England Wales Cricket Board is now going to sell stakes in the 8 um 100 teams later this year in that competition and say that it will continue to play this vital role in the future of our sport there are many of us you know I’m old now though but that would think that T20 would be better than um uh the the 100 but it does really look as if they’re they’re going nowhere are they with with the 100 except um to to keep it well I think there’s a danger that we approach these problems or situations through the lens of cricket and what’s right or good or helpful for Cricket but if one takes purely a commercial view of it then the Hun is owned as a property by the ECB uh it’s not owned by the counties so therefore they can dictate um how they want to develop the tournament and similarly uh the amount of money that’s going to come in and I think well I’m expecting some if not many of the IPO franchise owners to take big stakes in these 100 franchise teams if that does happen and the rain group who have been appointed to sell the franchise teams are as successful as they were in um getting the the the billion dollar investment into Chelsea and in the Manchester United deal getting s Jim rackliffe to part with you know two and a half billion for uh less than 30% of Manchester United then they may deliver a real windfall for the ECB the key though is not the income into the game it’s about how wisely that money is distributed so that the game as a whole really benefits from that and the solution is not to do what profession football has done where you just pay the best players more and more each year uh so that money just goes in and goes out You’ really got to make sure that you invest in the infrastructure of the game from top to bottom that you say the top to bottom there that’s the important thing and Derek from that point of view and I’ll come back to you Neil on this one as well looking at the money uh raised from selling these 49% Stakes it has to not just be the 18 class counties it does have to be that recreational side of the game as well doesn’t it well I mean the recreational side of the game might might have something else to say about it but I think England Wales Cricket Board has always you know looked after it reasonably well I think I mean quite a lot of money is shifted their way um but I just wonder if it’s not you know I think the T20 blast is suffering because it was the first T20 competition and there’s always the seduction of the new uh you know and that’s the 100 is coming I mean um Lords used to be sold out uh middle sex sorry T20 and coup the last couple of years it hasn’t been sold out because people are waiting and maybe you know spending their money on watching 100s instead the hubs yeah one of the one of the other things um that is annoying um some of the clubs um in in our in my area in Cambridge here at the moment Neil is that um they’re tight with money that not all of them have got sponsored and and what have you and they they just feel that um particularly those that have have got a thriving Junior group um that when it comes to playing League cricket at the moment uh in Cambridge here you you they have to have new ball for both Innings which is costing them more money than they really want to do the whole time um uh they they obviously have to pay for the umpiring and they pay as well for that you know which is which is quite considerable and then there is other bits and pieces that they just feel I mean they’re told which blls to buy and they’re expensive blls and have to buy them from um the uh the the whole sort of cricket um ways they can’t just go out and buy their own balls I mean it it it they just feel it’s an absolute nonsense just to save um that where they’d rather just save a little bit of money to help them with all of the other things they’re trying to do with when money is really tight at the moment well I can understand the concerns they have and I sympathize with the challenges that they face but if the game is going to not just grow in terms of the numbers that people are playing the game but if the G is going to develop then couple of things are fundamental to a good game of cricket you need a good pitch yeah uh and you need a good ball for bowlers to bowl with so and I was anti the cookaburra experiment uh that Rob key introduced and he’s Keen to develop fast Bowlers but I haven’t yet met a fast bowler who wants to spend a day and a half in the field uh and bow with a ball that doesn’t really move so I think you’ve got to have a high quality ball to encourage Bowlers and I saw a piece that Derek did this week with Simon Hughes which I found fascinating about potentially the extinction of Swing bowling as a consequence of James Anderson’s retirement and I I I think that the skills of the game spinning the ball swinging the ball seaming the ball uh and bowling the ball accurately um need to be prioritized you know we can’t just have that situation that we’ve got with some of the short form games where people are just serving it up and people are smacking it out the ground and some of the balls that are being used are you got flat seams and they and they don’t swing so it’s just becoming a bad dominated game so Derek tell us more about that conversation then was then it was noting there what what what where you feel and stand with this well I think uh there’s an obsession with certainly Bowlers when they reach the highest level of bowling at a certain miles per hour so 85 Plus is often talked about and I think U you know conventional swing is such a a difficult thing to achieve it’s very technical and and to do it you have to keep your wrist up and it’s very hard to bow at 85 miles hour plus keep your wrist up so I think you know James Anderson is one of the last few because you know we were talking earlier that you know Gus ains is coming and taking wickets you know it looks like there’s a almost seamless kind of you know trans you know transferring from the old guard to the new etc etc but Gus ainson gets a lot of pace from a snap in his wrist uh and he’s not going to swing it with a snap in the wrist like that but he’s going to gain a little bit of pace so you know that’s why he bowls at high 80s um it depends what you want I mean I just think think that swing is a skill it’s very handy when ples are fit P sorry pitches are flat um I mean Simon was Simon Hughes was discussing that everyone wants to wobble seam it now but you know on really flat decks it won’t seem the ball goes on so um I think swing is still a very important thing but um you know I speak to people who watch a lot of county cricket and they say there’s hardly anyone who SNS the board match so James Anderson I think you know like when they say last chance to see those Spees are going to become extinct and last chance to see a great swing ball uh which would be a real shame Neil though wouldn’t it I think it would be more than a shame I think it’s doing a disservice to the game yeah and there are some coaches of which Duncan Fletcher was one um and arguably some of Rob Keith’s comments about the kind of Bowlers he’s looking for um they got to be careful I think with their words because I think the beauty of cricket is its diversity um you know range of skills and and I remember Chim Devas from Sri Lanka being one of the best Bowlers in world cricket um but you wouldn’t have said he was particularly quick he certainly wasn’t tall he certainly wasn’t you know live in terms of his build like James Anderson but he was a very skillful bowler um so I think we’ve got to get back to prioritizing the development of skill so going back to the issue around Club Cricket that only going to happen is if if people can play on Good surfaces where it’s not just the case of Landing it there or thereabouts on a length uh and a slow surface and it being um hard for a batsman to make runs you you want some good pace and some good bounce but you also want to make sure that um the ball doesn’t seem too much and that then encourages Bowlers to become more skillful and they learn to bowl Cutters or you develop spin bowling more or or to quote Derek you know we need to really develop swing bowling as a real art and I remember you know my early days at Essex one of the reasons I think we were so successful as a club was because of Jerick and JK Le JK yeah wow they were fantastic exponents of the art of Swing bowling yeah I couldn’t agree with you more uh Neil and Derek will come back and speak uh again in a short while and um this is the Sunday nightclub on talk [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] across the UK on dab Plus on YouTube on the app on your mobile the home of Common Sense this is tor well a very good evening to you if you’re just joining us here coming up to the halftime well about 5 minutes or so to go in the first half between Spain and England in the final of the Euros in Berlin uh no gols to tell you about at the moment from either side uh we’ve got plenty of golf we’re going to have a good look at next week’s Open golf championship Jeremy Dale will be joining us for that Keith hackit still with us and Ian Hunter will be talking about those England Internationals this summer two defeats against New Zealand but getting better and a lot closer than they’ve been for some time and Barry Cowen uh will be with us as well to look back at what has been another terrific Wimbledon uh right now though Keith um good to have you back last few minutes of the first half there hasn’t been too much for the referees to do has there no he’s issued two yellow cards u those were spot on Harry Kane uh for England Danny Almo for Spain Danny Elmo’s challenge was a bit higher than uh than uh than Harry kanes but both were right I think the referee In fairness settle well uh got over those initial nerves he seems pretty relaxed he’s allowing the game to flow at the moment I think Spain are edging it but you know they’re they’re the threat I’d just like to see us getting a little bit more into the box um you know uh Bellingham and uh foden I’ve just got to do a little more that you know they’re youngsters aren’t they and we we we expect them to deliver every game I I expect a little bit more from them a little bit more composure uh foden’s given the the the ball away a couple of times in dodgy places but hey we’re still in there yeah I mean that’s the thing isn’t it you’ve got to you got to match them really and uh just uh it’s one chance this this game could easily get down to one chance couldn’t it yeah there was a close one earlier on with sacka going down that right wing and putting a cross in but the the the end delivery wasn’t as good as it could be we’re in there you know and uh it’s anybody’s game at the moment well we’re just going to take a break Keith and then I want to come back and talk to you more a little bit to about refereeing and the the ability to get more into the game again and and where we are so Keith is staying with us so we’ll just take a our final break for this uh hour if we uh May [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] across the UK on dab Plus on YouTube on the app on your mobile the home of Common Sense this is tor just got a few seconds uh left in this first half of injury time before they go in at halim no gos to tell him out so far Keith hackit is with me we’ve got a little bit of time Keith and I I I wanted to use this to think about uh certainly refereeing in England and and what have you and the emergence and and the hope the enticement of getting lots of other youngsters both men and women to come into the game as referees because I’m thinking an awful lot more about the way that football is going at the highest level to the states to the Middle East and and to elsewhere and I want us here in the UK to still have the real opportunity to show that we have both men and women in the future um able to be Top Class referees anywhere in the world yeah I mean look Mark when I took up referee as a youngster little did I think that I would officiate in 35 countries travel the world meet royalty meet if you like chancellors and presidents I’ve been very fortunate but that pathway is open to anyone who wishes to take up the whistle and I think that it’s those early years of refereeing that concern me more because they’ve got to get over that hurdle that level of abuse those parents around the pitch look when I refereed at Grassroots level there was one man and a dog usually and there were no spectators I go now and watch Junior games uh you know under sevens under eights young referee just starting his career and probably about 50 to 100 people earling abuse at the referee it’s quite a heavy Demand on on a Young official so we’ve got to work more at protecting them and I do think that the fa are beginning to move in that area in positive in a positive way you know I see I see people like Nathan Bachelor Joyce and others and you know one referee who’s come from our club at penniston church was in the Ia cup so he’s he’s actually referee in recent days in Portugal as a youngster so there’s a great opportunity and it isn’t as lonely as people think we you know you you hear the camarad between myself and Mark elzy and that applies to rots of referees it’s competitive the problem we’ve got in England is the pathway is too slow we’ve got too many aging officials at the Premier League level not performing at the level that we see a 35y old and remember he’s a full-time referee like we have Lex latex here is at court BFF so he’s got to find time to train he’s got to find time to referee and get away from matches so I do think this whole scenario is that we we we just got to get a churn in our system where referees even if they’re 36 and Beyond the age of this 35 year old here that seeing in this final even if they’re beyond that they’ still got that opportunity to shine and then of course drafted in we want to see X Pros coming in hopefully and and securing a position as referees yeah know I I I couldn’t agree with you more and I I think one of the other uh feelings for me is uh and I don’t know how it’s looked I mean at certain School uh football matches against other schools still do take place some of them use Masters as opposed to other referees and other of them like they do with Cricket the the more they go up to school they they also um use umparts from outside but I I would I still think there’s an opportunity within um School uh football I know not as much as it as used to be is is still played against other schools but there is there is St that that’s a really good opportunity for some of our younger referees who know that they will have the backing of the the school teachers coaches um that the behavior there will be good from the sidelines for sure and you know there’s that benefit we still see a difference even at school boy level of the difference between how a rugby union referee or that game yeah is treated as a school Master as against football but you’re right I I’ve seen a young referee here in the Sheffield region will cavana and he started his refereeing at school boy level going into into foot into schools he now is a school teacher himself so no doubt he’s doing that but he’s also advancing his career in the in the the pyramid but look Mark when I was again I go back to my career there were three levels level one two and three uh now there’s 14 up to 14 levels it it it’s creating barriers and difficulties for referees to move on and I know that at level forward in the fa we’ve got some very very competent officials but the pool is too big and they really and are holding referees back from that encouragement that takes them into the professional Arena and the are many referees that are giving up their career because they see that yeah as as a deterrent in terms of the opportunity to continue their growth and their career in referee I still think as well that more responsibility I don’t know how we do it because it seems to be getting totally out of hand now um that that that the highest level um in League football in this country and in other European countries um now they they they basically are Che meeting every moment they possibly can whether that and it must be complicit from the coaches and the managers uh that’s um not just in the Premier League that now is coming down the leagues I noticed far more in League one last season of Keepers going down holding the ball for longer doing this doing that others you know right on the sidelines taking time to come off if they S I mean all sorts of ways that they’re doing it yeah and um you know I just think all of that side of things um needs to be taken away from the players and the management and give them back to referees who know they’ve got the backing of everybody yeah I think there’s no question that we’ve got to see uh for a period of time not just six weeks a longer period where we have a regime of tightening up and trying to if you like outlow the things that are poor for the image of the game that cheating the diving the figing injury the goalkeepers holding on to the ball far too long the law is there the referees have to apply it and you’re quite right the county faas and the and the Football Association were responsible for the discipline have to deal with it yeah what surprised me Mark was I had a period helping the MLS form their professional referees many years ago and the discipline in the MLS is dealt with by the MLS through its referee organization and there are players involved in that and I was quite taking a bik How firm and supportive they were of referees because they thought about the image of the game we need to get a bit tougher of course what we see in Europe is that with two yellow cards the suspension in the English Premier League and Football League it’s up to five y cards before there’s a suspension that weakens if you like yeah the placing of the game and the penalty of a of a player because you know it can gain two or three yellow cards and nothing really happens um in the in the amateur game the Grassroots game he’s probably fined about 15 quid yeah which is is probably more severe that level Grassroots than at professional level yeah no I I I completely see where you’re coming from there I mean I I I do think that is a really good point to reduce the number of yellow cards before it actually matters uh to players particularly as well uh when we we do have bigger squads not not necessarily massive in the way they do in the Premier League which is just ridiculous um because they then send half of them out on loan or whatever else they do with them yeah but but I do think there still does need to be more of a deterrent because the yellow card in itself doesn’t seem to be this deterrent that that I I think it used to be no I I think you’re right um you know the money into the into the game the level of financial punishment to the player we probably have a situation where players don’t pay the fines anyway the club just signs the check and sends it on to the fa um and and you know the fa don’t gain because I think they give the money to charity in the main although at Grassroots level it does help uh the county FAS to to operate I just think that what we need to do is just tighten our game in England uh and and recognize the responsibility that that we have in terms of referees to apply the law correctly and firmly and be tough because I think what is interesting is when I look at the referees that have come through to the top they’ve all been pretty strict referees yeah you know if we go back to people like Jack Taylor Clive Thomas Pat Partridge they applied the law pretty strictly and I think in recent times who’s running the game is it the Premier League and the and the worry that referees have or is it the PGM but at the same time you know we we’ve got a this year we’ve got a a 56 year old referee officiating at Premier League level now it’s not a standout ref referee mhm we’ve got referees in Europe who are better performers and they reached that 45y old threshold in FIFA and their career is over so we’ve got an age problem and I know age discrimination and European law and all that exist but we really have to get if you like that churn in to get younger referees through because here is a 35y old and Mark in my era I was 6 and regarded as one of the youngest referees to referee at Cup final at age 36 it was a bit of a surprise to everybody here we’ve got a 35y old amateur referee because he’s not a full-time professional referee refereeing a big game and I’ve got to say his first half performance has been very good yeah it has and he’s been uh he’s he only began refereeing in 2015 I know and and this is the point that I made you it’s too long for our guys you know people like Oliver uh has had eight years of Grassroots level he was one of the youngest to get onto the the football league and then the Premier League and he’s delivered um what we’ve got to have is more referees coming through at a younger age and able to have a a fairly lengthy career that actually delivers performances week in week out but some sometimes sit back from it all Mark and and say were we right to actually introduce professional referee I question that because I played a part in it yeah have we gained the benefits or have we actually turned off a lot of people you know I know referees at football league level efl level they’re part of pgmol and they ought to be refereeing the odd Premier League game they’re not given that opportunity no you’re absolutely right Keith we’ll have plenty more to talk about during the second half to St with us so we’ve got a lot of golf to talk about we’ve got a lot of tennis to talk about and I tell you that if you want to listen well what’s it all about then the place to be is talk sport for the second half no goals to tell you about in that first half in Berlin it’s the Sunday nightclub on talk [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] across the UK on dab Plus on YouTube on the app on your mobile the home of Common Sense this is [Music] talk a very good evening to you welcome to the show we’ll keep your ey up today with the football the players coming out for the second half in Berlin in the final of euro2 24 no goals to tell you so far between England and Spain it could go into extra time it could go to penalties all the way we’ve got other sport to talk about here if you want to follow the football it’s talk Sport full commentary on that second half to come here Jeremy Dale joins us PGA coach and um a man who’s uh in the know when it comes to everything to do with golf we first of all got to talk Jeremy good evening to you got to talk first about about what a season Rob McIntyre is having oh and and what a day for him today got a you know as he’s in the game he got the drop on 16 which he he said was you know so good for him in the end but he need the birdie on 18 which he made and for him to win the Genesis Scottish open today on his way to trun uh for next week’s open his season’s just getting better and better yeah it’s all going right for him isn’t it I hean won the Canadian open a few weeks ago and now he does this and he came very close actually last year um um one of the most exciting tournaments last year actually was the Scottish open was played in completely the opposite wind and he had a three-wood into that last hole instead of a wedge made birdie and then Rory hit one of the shots of the year um out of a diva with a two on low beautiful little shot and um and then hold the part and it was it was a brilliant tournament so so that was fantastically exciting so great for him to Win It win it this year and a wonderful thing to happen just before the open I mean not many people win the tournament before major shefer has done it uh the last person really to do it was Phil Michelson who won the Scot out at Castle Stewart and then went on to win the championship at mfield but uh how good was that I mean 500 for the last five holes and H holding everything and yes getting lucky a little bit but making something of the luck and hopefully England will do the same in well let’s hope they will actually three other qualifiers confirmed after today’s uh rounds of course ironically well interestingly all three of them went out pretty early today with Aaron Ry Alex noren and Richard Manel all making it through 63 for Ry 65 for noren and mansel’s 61 a joint course record and they were out quite early well I like Aaron Ry actually he won the Scottish open two years ago uh wears two gloves a bit weird a very intense chat um um but um really dogged and I I kind of like that um and I would be you know nothing would surprise me less than see him play well might be a bit early for him to sort of contend and win at the open but I think a good outside bet I mean one of the great things about the Open Championship is to if you if you like having a bet is to pick a sort of 50 to 60 to one and and have have an each way bet and and there’s a guy I think that that plays well on links he’s proven links player and showing a bit of form and there’s plenty to like in that uh but yes um you do see that it was strange actually that the the whole scoring thing at on the back nine was was slightly more becalmed than it had been uh in the just to stop no no no sorries I’m just I’ll talk over if something happened at early golf of Spain in the second half I don’t know who scored it yet because I wasn’t watching at the time but it’s Spain who lead England by a goal to nil at I thought it’ have gone quiet downstairs we got a house full at the moment oh well you’re well thank you for being upstairs with me I yeah we we got a noisy Gallery here and certainly they have now in Berlin when it comes to the Spanish fans so work for England to do on that um TR next week just on on a sort of over figure for me personally here Jeremy and you’ll know it so well uh I’m very fond of trun uh one I had one of my best ever weeks and I’ve had some fantastic ones covering the open in my time for sky and um uh one week we had back when uh we stayed in Simington Little Village um not too far from TR itself with members and look they looked after us so well sevie was living next door with his family everyone went down the pub in the even I was just a classic and and Darren Clark was leading that particular open on the Saturday and I’ve told the story before but I’m going to tell it again and I said we used to do a on Sky uh News sports program at 7:30 in the evening and later if necessary when we were there and we had a van up the uh up the Esplanade and I’d said to Chubby Andrew chle who was Darren’s agage and I said is there any chance of getting Darren at 7:30 live on the Saturday night out leading the and he said well yeah but where and I said well we got to go down the Esplanade and um he said okay I’ll ask him and Darren said yeah well we got two bikes and cycled down together and then did the interview and cycled back well that would never happen these days would it for a man a man leading the open after three rounds absolutely fantastic you wouldn’t near them now but um know Darren’s top man and he would have been writing might be one of his good stories as well shame didn’t work out for him that must have been the Justin Leonard year I think got that down as 97 on my my G here um and um yeah that was I mean it really came good for Daren at roson georgees and he promised a lot was wonderful talent and it was great to see him get over the line and and somebody that you thought you know you really could you know go for Darren Clark as as a um as a supporter uh because he he sent out all the right signals isn’t he you know loves Guinness and and plays so so freely and and well and um you I met him a few times um yeah one of the earliest shows that I ever did was at the uh at the Dubai Desert Classic and um I had Lee and him uh they um foolishly we did my show before them and then kids wanted to see was whether they could do any trick shots or not and then later on in that week I did a show with sevie and I can hon I can assure you that I never in uh more nervous than when he was late so they said oh Jeremy you start uh and then so I was sitting away and was all fine and then he comes and he’s standing like three yards from me and I said I you know they’ve come to see you he said no no no you carry on maybe I learned something it’s like oh no we ended up hitting the shot together off our knees and me left handed him righted um brilliant he topped his along the ground I flushed mine and then he turned to the cloud and went which one was my ball you can’t win but no he was I’ve never been as nervous as as watching as when seie was s was watching and I know those those two guys they’re top guys they they’re great for for gol yeah I love TR I love I love the postage stamp yes yes interesting how I love a bit of craft in Golf Course architecture doesn’t have to be hugely long you see so many 200 yard par Threes And there are some actually there there at least two that are over 200 yards at at TR um but how wonderful and also a couple of holes before six is now the longest H in Championship goal 62 623 or 28 yards I think it is so um yeah lovely but actually the the power five plays downwind um and then that’s the six and they all all six of those are pretty much downwind there third comes in a little bit uh and then the seventh goes at sort of 45 degrees but the eighth comes straight back so normally the postage stamp plays a little bit into the wind which uh means they’ve got a flight a shot down and it’s only 20 yards and I really love to see that and and that’s that’s a shot in the modern game that’s conly gone out of it and uh I love seeing all of that and of course they get plenty of that on the back nine because the last six are are straight into the wind and some of the more interesting holes are sort of in that Loop in in in the middle but yeah a great ho no and and one of the other things as well for me um that with modern Golf and I I love watching it so much and you know that there’s so much quality with the the the the what’s I do and everybody else does and uh but for me there are so many players now who could win these tournaments that’s what I like about this yes yes well um it’s a bit like the 80s yeah where there no dominant player and you know he had Nicholas before that and in the 50s sort of Palmer and over here Bobby lock and Peter Thompson dominated the Open Championship a little bit um but the 80s were like a golden era and and the players were um very evenly match you had all the Europeans you had greag Norman you had fantastic Americans as well Nicholas and Watson was still competitive and and the likes of newcomers like pay Stewart and all of those um and we’re a little bit like that now um the game is a little less in balance in terms of the the courses and the equipment uh but in terms of the players there’s a fantastic range of of players and they all play really differently I mean You’ got you know You’ got the scientist um you got slightly fewer artists you got Bryson of course um but you’ve got different swings like Dustin Johnson they always used to say you know that nobody could play with a with a risk you know that um but he obviously can um Matt cucha who swings it around his legs almost you know really super flat swing um and you got slow swings you got faster swings you got natural players you know and uh and a couple of lefties as well Brian Harman and Bob bitar so um so that’s quite nice to see as a left hand of myself and and the different complexities of playing the open although I mean I don’t know what the I don’t know how dry the course is going to be this week uh not very I don’t think all the weather we’ve had and I think the rough has grown up a little bit as a result of that which I really don’t like to see um for years I mean we go back to the ‘ 80s for years years years so used to set up courses with heavy rough and it me nobody could play and it was like anti-lf almost yeah and anybody can get set a course up that so that nobody can play it um and the openers avoided that over the years and and created a test which is wide enough to let them play uh and the wispy Fairway gr rough grass off the Fairway um you can’t quite get the control uh that you can get from from the Fairway so there is a disadvantage and a Randomness we saw a little bit of that at the Uso yeah and we today actually as well at the at the Renaissance Club um the setup is key and the RNA usually get it right what I also don’t like to see is greens that excessively quick and with the winds that you’re going to get in TR they won’t do that they’ll have a SW know Green speed of about 10 and they set a much better example I think to clubs about how to set up the courses greens are bad for play they they put too much emphasis which on pting which has already got a huge amount on it um but but part the joy of the game is is the recovery game and I was there when Phil mcon hit that great shot out of the woods at at the 13th of August National if you put thick R every shots like that don’t occur um which is lessons the game because what you want to see is the complete set of skills and we talked about sevy earlier on and um you know the complete set of skills is what you want to test i’ interested to see you know that there there are some of the Americans particularly who in the end love playing uh in this particular type of links uh golf and I see that Harmon again I don’t know where he finished this week but he was having a good round again and getting himself and picking up the the pressure is on a previous champion because there’s so much you have to do isn’t there as well and you do that there is absolutely no doubt I’ve heard from every um Open winner that I’ve that I’ve ever interviewed and I talk about that year as the open they go back to where they’ve been they’re really looked after by the RNA it’s a it’s a special year isn’t it I would imagine it is yes I don’t I know you yeah but I like I like that I still there’s a lot of old-fashioned bits and pieces I don’t like about golf but there that is one of them that I do that they look after their they they look after their open champion and they have to bring the trophy back and there’s an appointment made for that and um one of the things I think is is much better now is that the Scottish open has this this uh Lynx venue every time for a while they changed it to Lo and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with Lo a wonderful Park course had some great experiences there for the midg but well okay yeah that um but uh what a great warmup for the open I mean for a fell like uh like Rory for example you know he’s taken three weeks off and to this this week all he’s got to do is turn up and convince himself that he can play golf again what a great place to do it similar Turf conditions and a big I mean you mentioned this last time we spoke actually uh a big Advantage for the PJ tour and European tour players to have this sort of tournament rather than what the Liv players are are doing this week they’re at valderama this week uh completely different U really soft Parkland um you know totally different grass um so they won’t have had the the wonderful preparation of getting used to playing all these different shots because it is it is almost an anomal kind of golf They Don’t Really played well they play nearly enough of it of course no I mean this is where we see people magically using clubs to play a shot that that club is not really for and and I do like that oh yeah no flighting the ball down um with three or four clubs more into the wind that was why the Renaissance last year that Roar a shot into the wind 444 yards that hole is and it was into a gale and he hit a two IR for a second shot yeah um and that’s the kind of golf we want to see um we want see the craft come back um the trajectory not so much shaping but the trajectory that you hit theall on these links courses whether you can fly it up downwind and into and uh and low into the wind Adam Scott did that beautifully today actually um that’s a real sign of uh of of complete skill and I agree that’s what I want to see um and you know hopefully with the roll back they’ll they’ll change that so that some of these courses can can can give us that again um but the open because of the weather really challenges them and and gives us a much more interesting Golf and also the slopes are are very much the hazards as well so these bunkers are you know huge pot bunkers and the slopes around them gather the ball so they play a lot bigger um and if you’re coming in from the wrong side of the Fairway uh to attack a particular flag then you know the slope can carry a ball away Andrews is great for that but Trum will be as well um so yes a fascinating um fascinating style of golf agreed and and one of the other things that I I always smile a little bit about that and I sort of like I like it more if if we’re watching on the television now as well because we see it all there those those golfers that are not thought of quite so much as the those that are expected at the top of the tree uh to do well and and the boys who are sort of uh out late at particularly on the second day out very late at night still in Scotland with everybody clearing up everything else around them as they they finish the course and everything and the I mean in their way there’s one or two usually very late on who suddenly scared the early leader board and and all the scribes and everybody suddenly have to rush out and do a little bit more with somebody I mean these are things you just don’t see at other tournaments well if you go to the open you get the chance to watch um these players really up close and see as you say all the shots that they um that they can hit and you can get really close to them because as you say I mean some some the last start time on on the Friday or Thursday is something like 4:00 so um you know there’s nobody around and um so yes you can get some really great um um personal experiences personal uh personal highlights that don’t really get shown on the TV and you see shots I think I mean a professional it always amazes me how how wide some some of the shots some of the long shots are uh and how offline they can be uh but obviously if they’re hit at 300 yards then that’s not difficult to do but what what always impresses me is the quality of the short shots and the craft uh and the course has to ask those questions for you to be able to see those skills yeah and and the links coures absolutely do they give them uh you know maybe a lie to play with but they give them all sorts of slopes and firm surfaces that they have to make we’re going to come back and talk about one or two of the players that we think are going to have a real chance and why here Jeremy at this particular tournament just to let everybody know Spain now uh we’re on the hour mark still leading England by that goal to nil in the final in Berlin but still plenty of time to go this is the Sunday night club on talk [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] across the UK on dab Plus on YouTube on the app app on your mobile the home of Common Sense this is talk Bellingham has just showed a bit of quality sadly it didn’t end up in the back of the net England’s still a go down at the moment of Spain keep you R up to date you want to follow that it’s talk Sport full commentary uh with the boys right now let’s have a look at some of the players then at the open coming up next week at TR the 152nd uh tournament and uh well well a good one and a great one it will be no doubt about that you’ve already mentioned Rory maroy a little bit there Jeremy and and what he’s got to do and he’s he’s he you know he he nearly got his fifth major in the the US Open and he’s had a little time away and and come back and I’m sure that you know there’s opportunities just let’s just Tiger Woods is playing in this one as well isn’t he yeah yeah I think so yeah I mean I’m I really still quite like watching him even though again I we could we can we can focus on tiger a little bit um yeah carry on John hog wrote about it actually um we think it’s over for Tiger John hog certainly did and I think it’s about right and you know it’s lovely to see him play people do want to go watch him play and also you know we talked about you know those those those those Thursday and Friday yeah no I I agree with that we just [Music] just having a little problem at the moment with your um signal but hopefully you can hear me okay uh let’s start right at the top then with Scotty Sheffer I can’t believe I I hadn’t realized Jeremy that um this is only going to be his fifth open ah Jeremy’s Frozen at the moment we’ll try and uh get him sorry I can’t hear you oh it’s okay no worries um uh even if I’ve only well you’ve frozen in picture even though I can hear you can can you can you hear hear me now I’m hoping no he can’t oh okay well we’ll we’ll try and get him back and sort it out uh well I’ll just tell you a little bit more about what’s going on in the football at the moment then Williams with the um goal obviously for Spain and uh we’ve got 25 minutes or so to go England had an opportunity through some real skill from Bellingham on the edge of the box but at the moment um they’ve got an awful lot of work to do um Talk sport if you want to follow uh full commentary on that at the moment so um uh uh we’re hopefully going to get uh Jeremy back it’s uh it’s it’s the I tell you what it’s been amazing all of the problems that we’ve had in the last few weeks with uh some of these things and uh it’s not all down to atmospherics I’m absolutely certain about that but uh we apologize I hope it hasn’t spoiled your your following of the show so um Jeremy is back with us which is good news um Jeremy hopefully you can hear me now good I can see you that’s great um yeah I can Scotty she I couldn’t believe that this was only I mean he’s won six times this season has he but I couldn’t believe this is only the I think it’s the fifth time he’s ever played in the open Tournament of course because we forget how how how how short a time he’s been on the on the tours that’s right they’re all so young now he’s only 28 so he won’t have played that many um but what a complete player he he is um he’s got all the shots we talked about shot making earlier um fighting the ball up down and moving it you know one way and the other which uh again at TR you don’t have to do that quite so much but if if uh uh if there some Crosswinds then that’s obviously very handy um but you couldn’t pick a more complete player and I like the the sort of heavy weights for this I mean Des Shambo has played you know as well as anybody CHL as well Sheffer brilliant player um but in terms of creativity Sheffer is is he stands out and I think that’s why he’s he’s been so successful this year yeah cha Flair you mentioned there as well he he he’s adapted his game very well he’s always done very well at the opens even if he hasn’t won it never missed a cut good strong good strong flight uh good all round game no weaknesses um the only the only question mark which he’s answered this year was that does he have that that Killer Instinct and I think he’s uh he’s shown us quite well that that he does and um and I think you know go back to Rory um what you got what sof has shown is that if you just keep knocking on the door eventually it will it will open um and I think the same is true with Rory I mean people are writing off saying you know the biggest choke ever I I saw a very article I thought from a thoughtful journalist Matthew Sayed oh yeah well no I don’t think it was I mean arold Palmer lost a seven shot lead I’m I’m afraid to say we’re having more problems Jeremy with the atmospherics at the moment so I’m going to have to I think what we’ll do is we’ll leave it there for the moment if we may um we’ll we won’t come back to Jeremy I was this shame ready because we got lots we would really like to to talk to him about I’ll tell you myself that I think that Tommy Fleetwood who’s had several near misses it’ be great to see him get closer but he’s got more to prove Matt Fitz Patrick um he’s still trying to do things been not in the greatest of form this season but coming back to it now Robert McIntyre who won today not ever easy to win backto back like that but hovland and abber are also players I think that will have an opportunity as far as the Liv tour is concerned it’s not so easy by any means for some of those even though Bryson to Shambo uh is a man for all courses at the moment and uh John Ram has recovered from the foot injury so he’ll be back and Brooks cap but we’ll leave it there really sorry about all of this at the moment we’ve still got though um some uh tennis to talk about and we’ll come back and do that as we move towards the end of the show and I can tell you that it’s still Spain leading by a goal to nil in the final of Euro 2024 [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] across the UK on dab Plus on YouTube on the app on your mobile the home of Common Sense this is talk well it’s uh still about 18 minutes to go in the final of the euros and at the moment there is uh no sign although England are on the attack again of actually getting themselves at level they’re a goal behind if you’re just joining us and uh all we’ve equalized as we speak and you know what it’s Palmer he’s only been on a couple of minutes and he’s got the izer for England what a strike that is from the substitute and that now means there is all to play for an absolutely superb goal from Robbie Palmer one a piece 18 minutes to go there we are well talk sport we’ll have plenty more of that from inside the ground uh one a piece and great news for England going to be a dramatic finish now to that game absolutely Ely brilliant I hope nobody was offside or anything like that the boys will tell me but I don’t think they were and uh we’ll see what uh what what happened with that it was a great great finish great finish from Palmer and uh a worthy goal for a young man who perhaps should have played more part in this tournament than he has so far but as substitute started again okay uh follow that on talk sport right now if you’d like to uh here we got a talk to Barry Cowan who I hope is with us and um got plenty to talk about after what has been a great week a couple of weeks at Wimbleton Barry good evening good evening you’re about 10 seconds ahead of me with the football well that’s okay that’s that’s good isn’t it very good so you were the breaking news that England have equalized yeah they have actually Rob Palmer great goal there we go um you’re always ahead of the game when it comes to the tennis though and uh in the end today um this sort of felt like me as you know with what’s happened with Andy and obviously the other retirements and and jovic you know well beaten today by alcaraz it was a phenomenal performance actually one of the best performances I’ve seen in the wiland final last couple of decades I thought he was incredible the variation that he showed and and I think he bullied jovic in many ways the first two sets was Flawless in fact it was Flawless until we had those three Championship points and then he sort of wobbled but like all great Champions he regrouped um and yeah I mean I thought it was a an amazing perform 21 years of age he’s won four grand slams the four finals he’s been in he’s won them all and that’s what the greats have Mark don’t they they they’re able to play their very best tennis um when it really matters and and I actually I’ve kind of been a little bit different um to a lot of people at wimon on alas I think he’s played very well throughout the two weeks he’s played against players that have played some unbelievable tennis tifo H Hall I thought medev played very well in the semifinals but in in in those matches I mentioned he had suffered a little bit of a dip today apart from when he was trying to close out the match there was absolutely no dip at all it was an incredible display from from alres yeah it was and jovic who always gives the Menace to me to the the opposition even if they think they’re in control but we we we’re watching one of the new stars now is that the guard really does begin to change completely yeah because he he is a hybrid of all three and he’s got a little bit of jovic little bit of Nadal little bit of feder in him he’s and for 21 generally you would history will tell you that maybe not the complete player he is the complete player um he he can hurt you with the serve and the volley he can hurt you of course the movement I mean some of those gets today some of those slides extraordinary I mean never thought you could they say you weren’t meant to slide on on grass or hard um it’s only play well he slides on all three um and and now obviously for for Carlos you know he he I think jovic was Shell Shocked um I don’t think jovic was at his best but I want to lean more towards alcaraz’s Mark that he didn’t allow him to play his best um did well to make the final considering he was on the hospital bed a month ago he on that with the and everything else and and what have you and also he’s had some tough matches who jovic yeah yes but I it was one of my doubts I mean jovic was my tip at the start and jovic was my tip today because I thought I thought his level against mazetti was very good but one my one doubt was he hasn’t beaten a top 10 player this year in fact he’s only played a couple of top 10 players so as well as jovic played against MTI and in some of the other matches when you’re playing against the elite and they are playing well I just don’t think jovic was quite ready to to to raise his game he said as much in his press conference um I mean obviously that there are circumstances behind the reason why jovic hasn’t beaten a top 10 player and and then he’s only played two in 2024 because of the injuries um he scheduled he’s trying to pick and choose so I think the summer is really po important for Novak now he’ll identify of course the Olympics that’s something that ultimately he he he really chasing to complete the whole the whole set in terms of the titles um but you know jovic will be excuse me alcarez will be keen and eager to add an Olympic goal to the four majes that he’s now bagged in the last couple of years and how how much more can jovic put himself through like this I mean it’s extraordinary is but but I still say still say 37 years young Mark okay yeah last year he won three majors and the only one he didn’t win was Wimbledon that that was a five setep match and he had his chances the end of last year the ATP finals he played an unbelievable match he absolutely dispatched sinner comfortably he beat alz at the end of last year you know this this year has been a difficult year now I get you know you’re right to ask that question at 37 years of age how much longer will he go on for but when I look at players and competitors like jovic the first thing that I feel goes is the will you know does he have the desire to add more more big titles I absolutely see that and I think that you know he will get extra motivation from trying to be able to beat sin and Al because it is those three you know we I think that that’s been in evidence a wom on the last couple of weeks I think those three are ahead of the the pack um and and I will never ever rule out a great Champion um because jovic you know like when feder feder was still winning you mean that Australian Opening back in was it 2018 and also or the year before actually I also think I mean having watched u a lot of his matches you know the the whole family now are beginning to grow up and I think that’s helped him again you know it’s not just leaving you know the family behind because that you can’t trust the kids because they’re so young in the box or or whatever now he can and and for all of them there he really relished that and and and showed himself as being a good dad during this tournament yeah I mean he he he has shown a lot I mean obviously he had that difficult situation against Runa that was pretty uncomfortable um maybe that’s not the right word but I think that he slightly read the room incorrectly yeah um and they weren’t actually booing him it was more was room wasn’t it exactly um but I think he he also has I’ve seen situations I remember you know the wi final when he feder and and the whole crowd were against him I remember clearly at the US Open final I mean that’s that’s another 10,000 of the Arthur Stadium to what you have a center cup they were all against him and he was able to channel it actually in a weird way maybe that’s what he needed today maybe he he probably needed the the crowd to get against it to be against him because he couldn’t he couldn’t find that extra little bit of fire because there was nothing really to cling on to because he was being well beaten we saw some premotion in the third set and and obviously that was that was the best set of tennis um that he played um but you know alarz it you know rounds off what has been um an astonishing you know couple of weeks for him yeah yeah and and really you know great great for him what what have the others anybody else emerged for you in the in the men’s before we talk a little about the women’s as well well it was great to see mazetti play as well as he did he’s always had the talent Maybe he the question marks of being about his temperament and physically but he he played some superb tennis I thought I thought medev played great he was close to being defaulted I mean any time the Umpire gets out of the chair that’s only for one reason so you know he was right on the threshold so there there were a lots of stories in the men’s and I think some great stories in the women’s the semifinals on Thursday were great obviously the the big hitters weren’t around you know it was palini M beic had Cent a stage and then and then yesterday I think you know great story actually given that Kika was mentored by Jana nner yeah and I think she sort of grew um and got some you know real strength from from Jana having won wimon and and and you know I’m sure she was looking down on Bora with a with a smile on her face yeah know that’s a really good way of saying it and palini she’ll come again oh I don’t know yeah I don’t know about that I mean naturally you know having reached the final of the French and wom and back to back I mean I think she’s only the fifth wom woman played to do that she’s an elite company along with henin and Serena and Venus and I think might be graph for the the other one um but there’s no guarantee just because you may meet a couple of major finals they’re going to be more further down the line so if you were to push me and say do you think she’ll be another one or not I would I would lean towards notun really royally entertained in the last couple of grand slams yeah she has um uh just away from that to to sense of of whether this was a classic Wimbledon or not the weather got in the way a little bit all the way through it this time thank goodness for the roof on many occasions as well and uh but did did it have the same feel to you it had a good feel I wouldn’t say it was a classic wimon I wouldn’t say it was went down as one of the best but the worst stories uh I mean you always kind of remember I think the climax and and today although I expected a great great one but it didn’t really have a Twist I think yesterday you know as good as as interesting as the match was it lacked you know your your your top player so I think it was a good wi him but I don’t I don’t think it’ll be one of those Mark in all fairness that in 10 years time we will go oh that was amazing I think for me the story was Murray I think that was you know his his sort of retirement um gift you know partying the ways I mean what he’s contributed to to wimon um having wed a couple of times final Olympics there but also British tennis so I I really hope that that Andy can be fit for the Olympics and he can put in a good showing in Paris in a couple of weeks well we’ll come and talk about what’s going to happen at Roland garos in a couple of weeks time in the Olympics if we may in just a moment I’m going to take an early break here because of course with the football continuing at the moment it’s a one a piece with seven minutes to go [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] across the UK on dab Plus on YouTube on the app on your mobile the home of Common Sense this is tour well Aral has scored a second for uh Spain they lead by two goals to one there’s only a few minutes left it was a superb goal as well and England with it all to do and if they somehow get into extra time they’ve got to score very late on as they already have done so many times in this tournament um to somehow get themselves back into the game okay 2-1 then to Spain at the moment let’s have a quick word with Keith hackit it was a a terrific goal Keith that one wasn’t it and yeah you know they real quality I think there’s no question that they’ve been the better team uh they’ve got a lot of skill they seem to have a lot of momentum uh I think some of the players on the England side look fatigued I don’t think foden Bellingham have had their best game uh pford has done really well uh he’s pulled off some saves so the score could have been bigger the guy that I’ve been closely watching is the referee yeah and you know I I think it demonstrates that when you have players who behave don’t cheat want to get on with a game how much easier it is for the referee yeah yeah and the referees had a very good game they you know we’ve not Mark even seen that word that you and I talk about almost on a weekly basis V’s not put in an appearance uh we’ve just seen a good game yeah we and despite the fact that I think it’s U it probably is the end for England you know we got to the final um let’s let’s see if can squeeze well let’s hope so I mean they’ve got a corner at the moment so they they’ve still got an opportunity we’ve still got a minute or so there’ll be some uh injury injury time as as well to come and uh I can’t believe it they’ve had two opportunities that have both been cleared off the line in the last minute uh extraordinary there from the corner the first header I think comes in uh from Declan or there’s a couple of couple of heads for Dean rice and they’ve theyve they’ve defended it well oh shame but still still not completely over anyway Keith uh just stay with us we might come back to you before the end of the show okay uh we’re going to talk a little bit more tennis uh right now with Barry Cowen um Barry extraordinary the football we’re just ahead of you here but oh he’s not quite ready yet we’re just uh wait for Barry so if you are just joining us here talk sport for the dramatic climax uh with full commentary I think there’s a couple of minutes I saw on the board there is it two minutes still to go so uh we’ll come back to that in a moment Barry um it it doesn’t look quite so good England got just a couple of minutes now to sort things out what four minutes of extra time yeah let’s hope they can scor didn’t they oh two two headers from Dean rice I think which were both cleared off the line and then the third one or whatever went over the bar but there we are they they’ve just got to go for it now shame um back to if we may um not just with Wimbledon in mind but of course uh they can fast where Flushing Meadow still to come uh at the end of the month and into next month now of course when we think about this a August is uh uh where where what’s that one going to be like because we’ve got before that the little bit of we’ve already touched on the Olympics so if we talk a little bit about that and then straight from there at the end of this month into um August and and the US Open yeah it’s a mad next few months I mean given how busy the last couple of months have been with the French Open and W and then you’ve you know obviously got the Olympics so the change of surface Nadal is back next week so it be really interesting to see his sort of level he’s playing a a ATP 250 event so the lowest grade of the ATP tournaments in Sweden so I mean I actually thought he played pretty well at the French Rafer he lost sort of narrowly to Z Zev who suffered that really uncomfortable injury at will M so we don’t know how his knee will will be and jovic clearly as I said clearly that’s that’s that’s a big goal for him and then I think it’s going to be hard for anyone that does well in the Olympics realistically to be able to hit the ground running when they when they make that transition onto the hard courts in in North America so it right now it’s very difficult to predict for me what’s what’s going to happen at the US Open it’s more like let’s just take what’s going to happen in the Olympics yeah so so who’s G who’s your favorite for all of for the Olympics well well right now be Fon I think that’s something that she is definitely definitely targeting I never really felt that she was a for me she was a serious candidate to win wimon she didn’t play a warm-up event I think an Olympic gold medal right now in her career would probably mean more to her than Wim because you know the Olympics is every four years so so for me she’s Head and Shoulders above everyone else on a clay CT her French Open record will will back that up and then in the men’s you know what it it’s often thrown up surprise winners so you know that it’s it’s difficult to predict I mean naturally people will say well what about alcarez he’s won the French he just won Wimbledon you know he is the player absolutely in form but his best of three sets it’s a totally different Dynamic Olympics because it’s it’s not like a normal tournament will he at his age be able to adjust to that you would suggest yes um I think jokovic will be targeting um the Olympics but it’s my kind of my gut feeling you know is is probably would be leaning towards maybe a jovic because he’s got the experience before of what the Olympics is all about you know that it could be somewhat like a City Pass I mean I think and a gold for City Pass would mean a lot to him coming from Greece because they don’t bag many gold medals no they don’t well that’s uh that’s great well it’s been great um and uh you know still so much to look forward I just hope with Paris and that when we’re perhaps discussing all these sort of things it’s it’s you know it’s going to be a peaceful Olympics this time around let let’s yeah let’s hope so let’s hope that you know stars do emerge and stories emerge and let’s you know let’s be biased let’s hope we bring home a load of gold medals yeah well Barry it’s been a delight as always to talk to you and thank you very much indeed for joining us on the Sunday night club here uh I think that’s it it’s it it’s all over Spain have won the European title they’ve beaten England by two goals to one uh a late goal to win it after England had somehow climbed back into the game but not to be for England beaten by Spain and Keith hackit who is uh hopefully still with me just for the last couple of minutes or so just going to get him up and uh sort things out uh England shattered there’s no doubt about that a lot of them have just sunk to their knees wherever they were on the field but as far as Spain are concerned it is once more been their night and you’d have to say that SP have been the best side in this tournament uh nearly Head and Shoulders above everybody else so not to be for England this evening Kei I think that uh in the end didn’t surprise us no I think uh we were second best most of the match um when we made that substitute with Palmer came on and and scored a good goal and and credit to him what a young team um we’ve we’re in that change now and I think what we’ve got to to do is just say look we got to the final what can we do in the next tournament are we going to win some one of these tournaments and not leave it Al long 1966 is a long time away isn’t it I know it cly is frustrating for the fans uh but I think In fairness the the referee tonight’s had a very good game uh and from my point of view is is really positive because someone took the risk of appointing this guy toen was the number one French referee we all thought by a country mile but In fairness this young lad is coming and he’s delivered a good performance good for the game in that sense disappointing if you’re an England fan no question there’s no no doubt one thing that I want to it’s not not a chat for tonight really but I do feel that we’re in danger because of influences away from football from what’s happening in the Middle East and what happening in America as far as football’s concerned they want to suddenly rest the way our game from our own countries and from Europe and everything else uh after what’s happened in covid and then on from that nobody gets AR arrest in the same way our league and and one or two things have got to be sorted I feel uh for it particularly when we have Premier League sides that have’ got all got squads over 40 players and yet half of them they Farm out there has to be a different way of sorting things out I’m afraid and and I think that you know for the likes of a Harry Kane I think he’s you know he came off early it’s been a disappointing tournament for him and not one that U he’ll want to remember and I don’t think was ever quite fit and I don’t know how many times I’ve said this in my career but you’re going to never ever win major tournaments if you expect to rely on players Fitness when you know they’re not really fit yeah I I you know I mean the England team have all the medical exper I think I think managers have to take onard that medical expertise but again it’s down to selection and we we you know we start off and we develop a team we think we’re going to go on and then when we actually look at the squad there were I think 12 players that were relatively new to the squad and therefore I think that you know we shouldn’t be changing at a tournament we should be changing mid tournament I think and then giving at least a year to develop but hey I wonder if this is the end for Southgate uh and whether he’ll come under pressure who knows football is uh a delicate situation yeah I mean look whatever happens he’s had a good run there’s no doubt about that he’s been well rewarded um for all of that uh whether he could feel that there is another a premier league side that would want him at the moment um in the way that you know he’s he’s still got a bit to prove on that day in day out for the the modern Premier League having been away from it for some time even though he’s been dealing with a lot of players that have have played in it but who knows who knows what uh what will happen next I don’t think there’ll be any sort of decision made straight away and I do think um for the likes of Harry Kane uh who’s been a a wonderful captain in the past for England just wonder the combination of the uh bad back and playing in the Bundesliga that is not up to the level of the Premier League has perhaps not been able to show us his best yeah I think that’s right uh I think we probably more than than than fair seen the end of Harry Kane and his International career he’s been a great servant uh you know he’s scored some wonderful goals he’s entertained us uh I think we’ve now got to bring these youngsters on give them the opportunity to mature and understand more about the game and bring more in you know I I I still believe I started off my my own disappointment in Jack greish not being in this tournament at start uh you know uh but we’ve been beaten and we’ve been beaten by the better team there’s no question about that I think Spain were Head and Shoulders above everyone else and not down to a referee’s decision no and that is a good thing as well and Keith it’s been a a terrific uh well season to have you with us and I’m sure we’re going to have plenty of other things to talk about as well uh

We always hear politicians say "we must unite" yet do all they can to divide the people into two tribes which is required for democracy to work . They use rhetoric, platitudes, spin doctors and generalizations rather than tell the people the truth.
I said 20 years ago England will not win another International Cup . First England were lucky in 1966 when the third goal may not have crossed the line and Hursts admitted he was trying to kick the ball out of the stadium to waste time and the ball went in the German goal in error. The Premier League is the most watched in the world it also has players paid obscene amounts of cash and season tickets that are far too high. England met no real opposition until the final with predictable results. When England meet Brazil, Argentina , Germany, Spain ,Portugal France they will always struggle and those teams have won the World Cup many times also the Nations Cup . How can i say that i am certain that England will not win the next World Cup .Perhaps because of history but more likely there is something basically wrong with the English system . The Premier League has 66% of foreign players that can not be good for the national team though it does make the individual teams win more games.
Spain has won this cup four times now even Greece has won it with a number of other national teams winning it two, three or more times. Something wrong here when it is considered a win to lose in the semi final or even the final on a very few occasions . A reality check is much needed if the vast amounts of cash can be put to one side for a moment.
