and welcome back welcome aboard another hard train I’m one of your co-host EV singer I got Matt serac with me what’s up B good to see you my friend we’re back it’s good to see you we’re back we haven’t recorded in a little while and we’re both playing pretty shitty golf so today we are going to unpack what’s the gray between good or bad golf why what happens when we play Bad Golf it’s not necessarily just our swing or how many balls we lost off the tea there there’s something else and I think we’re going to get to that and I hope we’re I think we’re hoping as much for our our our listeners and our viewers we’re going to find out some stuff for ourselves too so in case you guys are new we help frustrated golfers enjoy the ride again cuz if you can learn to smile through bad golf you can smile through anything so if you like this video hop aboard the channel subscribe now and Sir what do they got to do just enjoy the ride enjoy the ride guys take care so Sur like we were saying you’ve played in your first competitive round you’ve played Oakmont we haven’t done a pot on that yet uh you’ve played multiple rounds I played three rounds in Hawaii I’m playing again to I played again after that and I’m playing again tomorrow yeah we’re playing gol summer we’re playing a lot of golf and we’re playing some of our worst Golf and we’re not happy about it but we’re happy to unpack it today um and we want to try and pinpoint what are the themes and the patterns of what we’re doing now versus what we were oh lost you hold on there we go you hear me your little echoey there we go he’s back cut that out got oh oh jeez get worse here we go I keep moving and it’s coming out all right I won’t touch it um I think we want to try and pinpoint what happened during our best rounds that’s different than what we’re doing lately and um what is that gray area between good bad golf you know sure I think you made a good point before we started recording you think about every hole after a round and you really unpack what happened I need to do that more I think it’s so easy after a bad round to just think about the worst moments and just chalk it up to a really bad round and then you move on you either think you’re lost you think you need to blow it up and start over I mean it can get pretty dark pretty quick right so um why don’t we start with you you’ve played in your first competitive round um explain that with your brother Mike yeah um you shot some scores that I haven’t heard from you very often so let’s let’s dig into it and then I’ll jump in with mine as well yeah um so yeah kind of looking at I think this episode I’m kind of looking at like my last four rounds I’ve played um and one of them being a tournament round uh uh the Chicago District your goal for the year yeah Chicago District Golf Association uh four ball qualifier uh with my brother Mike we’ve had in the show um and uh that was this week we didn’t qualify thanks to the both of us um we we shot one under again it’s a fourball guy so it’s best ball no shots no handicap straight up um kind of like the Butterfield Invitational where Mike and my brother Joe have won same format um but you’ve got you know there’s probably I don’t know 25 teams 25 teams of two and uh how many spots qualify 11 team probably 11 10 or 11 teams something like that okay um and four under got in maybe more than 20 maybe 30 to 40 I’m not sure but 11 teams get in and um four under got in and we shot one under and we felt like we shot six over um but um but yeah last couple rounds leading up to that I’ll kind of get there um I’ve just been just kind of struggling uh my see I’ve shot in 76 84 79 and I probably would have been around 74 or 75 in the uh tournament um but um so in some parts it was a little better but didn’t quite have this score because it still a team event um and yeah EV I think it’s important like I mean every round I I sit back and reflect whether it’s the drive home home or the night in bed in the bed then can’t sleep I that last night actually and your M says why are you staring at the ceiling oh I’m just thinking through every shot I had in my entire round yeah um Shana looks at me like geez something’s off sh any of our like why do you guys play this game right now we think it I think that very often actually um yeah so um yeah I mean you know the the round I shot what I think what’s been sticking out that’s been I’ve been struggling with um is my iron play really really poor um and that’s that’s generally been a theme I would say in the certainly in the 84 um 79 and even in the tournament where um I just boy I just couldn’t figure out what I was wanting to do um and that’s kind of with the shot or your swing I don’t know what shot I want to hit and I think it’s because part of it whether it’s a cut or a draw um but I think it’s part of it I’m just not trusting a feeler I don’t have a good feeler move you know because I’ve always like one kind of body mechanical move right whatever it is you know you know it’s funny having these moments of Darkness you think about I always think about the great rounds right I had the 69 at the start of the year I think about last year I think about like what was working go back to those thoughts right easier easier said than done it seems like though because something else could be a little off right it might not match up like it did six months ago two years ago so um so i’ I think i’ I’ve really I think i’ I think I’ve over complicated my iron play with just too worried about what feel to have or draw or faded or and um I’m just steering the steering the golf ball and it’s interesting because when you think you’re trying to steer it you think it’s going to go straighter but boy it can be the exact opposite it can be and so you know I played this round when I shot 84 um you know and I I I looked back at that round and and I hit a lot of bad shots also aot of bad shots that got worse what do I mean by that this is what we have to realize second hole I just missed the Fairway I’ve got a it’s par five I’ve got a tree you know a little in front of me some branches so I take I take on the second shot trying to fade it around just clip the tree pops straight down and kicks right what if that doesn’t do that I hit a made a really good swing I took a risk okay so what happens if I just hit more of the layup but what also happens if that ball just goes through those there wasn’t there it was mostly just leaves it wasn’t much really branches what happens if that goes through and gets up near the green I make birdie well because I didn’t I ended up kicking right getting behind the tree and I made six part then you know part three on the front I I make a bad swing I push it looks like it was just off the green kicks off the hill goes into the hazard that was 30 yards away how did it go in the hazard you know um you know and then there was just you know then there’s of course you’re not getting up and down um some putts you know just some three puts you throw in and it adds up really quick and then after I shot that round um this is my high one of my highest rounds I think in a very long time 84 playing you know at a golf course that’s a 72 rating playing to a 10 handicap there um and again the iron play it was just you know I couldn’t get you can’t get your distances isn’t that the worst have air Mel and greens then then you’re like well I don’t know my Club selection right or you know or you oh I made a good swing there but it’s it’s 40 feet long like what is going on it’s like I don’t know how I’m striking the golf ball so then you’re like you’re just creating all these stories in your head like well that is a challenge that not enough people talk about when you’re struggling with iron play is the solidness of your irons yeah you don’t know how to play your yardages because you start to play it in off solid and then you hit one solid and now you’re getting penalized for hitting a good one and you’re like I don’t know what to do this 84 I aired the first hole second shot um which I thought there was no way I could have gone long I was playing a club less but coming out of the rough um and then the part three in the third hole I thought I made a perfect swing with an eight iron and I was 35 yards over the green you know it was a raised green overwater a little downhill and you just get on this path of like oh [ __ ] even my boy my good swings I don’t know what the hell I’m doing yeah um so I came out of that round obviously disappointed lost a bunch of money to my buddies who played great um but then I was thinking about that 69 I shot at the start of the year we talked about that a while ago and I was just like man you know I was hitting it good I was confident wasn’t going into bunkers you know got a lot of got some good breaks um was really smooth and slow with my putting stroke um I really identified this 84 how tense I started to get on the greens how how tense in my setup um and you know that that leads to a lot of 5-footers missed a lot of four-footers missed um and that because you were like I I want to save this yeah or like I’m finally on the green like it was a journey to get there yeah it’s just a spillover from um constantly putting for par and your mind really consumed with how bad my your iron play is yeah it’s the lack of being able to stay present um you know uh it’s it’s a it’s a real challenge I don’t know how I can nod more for someone that’s on Audio Only my neck might hurt from nodding because I if I don’t think anyone understands the pain of bad Iron play as much as I have these last two years because yeah and I’ll let you dive in there a little bit because you know you talk about the shame we feel or like man I’m I’m good at this this is what I’m supposed to be good at after that round I was like I I as I said to my who I said to my brother no briyan Hosley the guy I play with who he played great he played really good that round I was like man I I’m the one who usually always misses short I because I’ve preached on this show missing it long is just death and I just kept missing along all day and what did I do make doubles you know but like I’m you know and I I think I just not tuned in enough with my yardage not tuned enough with the wind not tuned in enough with okay you’re you just feel uncomfortable miss it short just because your tendency is to miss it long you know that and I couldn’t seem to quite get out of that I was searching too much of trying to fix it and okay then okay you make a what appears to be a solid shot going you know at your target but the yardage is off and so it’s just it’s just not being able to adjust because you’re you’re too I’m I’m I’m too caught up with um what is the problem yeah instead of there’s a Sol there’s a better solution for today and that solution should be chipping uphill or putting from off the green uphill or a bunker shot uphill as opposed to it’s just being able to you know as opposed to chipping from behind the green downhill or going into hazards which is what I was doing right right what you just said is so money for anyone that played a horrific round or is struggling right now what you just said is the automatic response in our brains is holy [ __ ] or WTF what’s the problem but what we what you didn’t ask is what happened there right right yeah because like if you tell me because it’s funny this is why I love this show because you pick up on things that I’m not realizing and I pick up on things that you don’t realize and we call each other out to help each other get better um and it helps that it’s probably entertaining to listen to but in your best rounds you were always like this is the shot I’m gonna hit and let’s [ __ ] go you like to give yourself a little kick in the ass and you go I just need to get really clear with what I’m trying to do and step into it it and [ __ ] do it yeah right whereas the funny thing is in a struggle round your highest round I can remember in a while maybe ever honestly um yeah I me was what’s the problem instead of wait I didn’t know what type of shot to hit there so I was totally uncommitted I tried to guide it and I hit it long so in the next shot it’s not fixing a problem it’s getting clear on what shot you want to hit right and my attitude wasn’t that bad you know I think you know our tagline is if you can smile through bad golf you can smile through anything it’s when you play with your people you don’t get your friends you don’t get to see them all the time it’s about having fun no matter how bad it was and how bad you feel inside right you got smiling and talking in between shots is what it’s about right right um but even like oh you made the great swing well you picked the wrong club and so I was dealing with both of this and I was like okay I was kind of accepting what was happening and something else would happen and they just you know and I think it for me I think the takeaway is because my driver wasn’t that bad I was kind of hitting the cut you know it was fine it wasn’t great but it was fine um guys sometimes when the wheels are going off what I what I pride myself in is being able to figure out what’s happening and um I don’t know damage control yeah you know isn’t it funny not making not compound a double with another double um but it just but it got away it and I didn’t you know didn’t give up kept fighting um I was just you know it doesn’t help too when you’re playing against a couple guys who making a bunch of birdies and you’re like then you want to press you know or you know um but um it’s funny too how when you say whatever comes whatever follows I pride myself on is usually the time that you get the most frustrated correct because it’s not just a bad golf shot now it’s me not being able to do something I’m usually good at you know and that’s why to your point and that’s when you start feeling lost right and to your point about it should be fun with friends you should have fun regardless sometimes it’s really hard because like for me to be po totally Frank I thought about canceling this round tomorrow um just because I’m not going to I’m going to explain what I’m going to do differently but you know when you’re with friends that know you for a certain level and then you don’t play to that level you’re already letting yourself down but now you’re starting to get the comments of like dude that’s what’s going on you didn’t used to hit shots like that or I’m like beating you dude you used to be like so much better than me you know and sometimes they don’t mean to say it sometimes they do and they’re trying to rib you whatever but um I’ve really struggled with that specifically in my Ricky cup trip because I’m normally you know best one there and I’ve really struggled and you know to transition to me for a second on my last few rounds and then we’ll go back and forth you know I was in Hawaii I’m with my wife Tara for our baby moon this isn’t about golf I’m playing three amazing tracks I played um guu Bay I played Princeville McKai and I played hakua ocean course three awesome I just remember those from old computer games I video games yeah like those yeah feels like you’re in Jurassic Park there’s the ocean some really dramatic really cool holes yeah you know and I’m with my wife in the cart who’s pregnant she’s not playing and it’s like this is my I joked on Instagram but it really is the first time my my future son is experiencing golf with me so and we’re just on vacation it doesn’t matter what I shoot but my problem used to be I’m always losing it show off the te right and you just can’t play golf hitting three off the te all day and losing four to six balls around Hawaii I still lost some balls but it wasn’t really because of the driver like I was in play um and I think it’s easy when you’re used to being out of play when you’re in play I think it’s really easy to be like excited of like all right let’s go get this right like I’ll never forget I think it was Poipu Bay like number two par five smoke one down the middle I got a six iron in to a par five little elevated green that goes up towards the right um and I like block hazle a six iron over the trees lost ball and I’m like what the [ __ ] is going on like and you know I’ve been for people that are just what was going on I didn’t always have an answer like were you thinking about oh my God I’m in the I’m in the driver’s seat yeah I might have gotten excited I’m Gonna Knock It On The Green I’m G have an eagle putt or like or were you thinking about huh you know what’s where do I got to miss it it’s yeah I think I probably got ahead of myself a little bit because you didn’t get ahead of yourself on the drive no you’re right um right this is what we’re trying to dig into again we’re not we’re not doing shot by shot but like that shot scarred you clearly oh yeah because it’s like you know it’s a six iron were you in between clubs like what was the wind doing where was you know where was the pin what’s your What would what was the shot the shot shape you wanted versus what yeah I mean that I probably didn’t have answers for a lot of those questions you know which probably means I’m excited I’m walking in the shot and I want to put it somewhere up by the green maybe I’m swinging too hard right um I think the thing I’ve been thinking a lot about lately I’d love to get your thoughts on and then I’m going to try tomorrow is most people that listen to this show know but if you’re newer you know my so it’s funny both of our goals are converging on this episode from the beginning of the year your goal was to play in competitive golf again you just recently did that you didn’t qualify you have another qualifier this year but you know compared to your recent rounds it was one of your better ones of the last four so there’s probably a positive there but not your best yeah didn’t qualify um my goal at the beginning of the year was to stop trying to reinvent and change the wheel on my own trying different swing Fields every time and to actually get real coaching and guidance and not change anything unless I’m with his instruction right I think there’s also a an interesting challenge that’s popped up where we’ve still kind of been kind of searching in a way like nothing has really stuck um and I find myself you know when you think about I just had a call about mental golf type yesterday with someone and you know I think the best thing about mental golf type if you guys want a free assessment not an ad just you know we’ve talked about it many times in the show mental gool type.com it’s a f minute free assessment it’s a personality test that’s driven and rooted in golf um I’m an ENFP so I’m an extroverted intuitive feeler perceiver there is no technical or analytical bone in my body in that mental golf type and in how I’m wired I’m a feeler I’m an intuitive I I I’m a creative I jump from one thing to the next it’s really hard for me to focus but when I golf I’m so technical right so the beautiful thing about mental golf type is like how am I wired in life and what am I bringing to the golf course that I don’t do in anywhere else yeah and so it got me thinking recently like even when I’ve tried to just swing smooth and focus on Rhythm and not get into technical I always have this little voice in the back of my head that says yeah but you can do both just think about that one thing because you need it but then just focus on you know your your smoothness and I think back to that Lakeside round Lakeside Country Club when I had the pressure of being at a private club I’m with people I you know I knew and I didn’t know I mean those historically have been times I really struggled and I really just slowed down and I think about this shot under the tree I think it’s like 15 or 16 coming in I hit a decent drive it just kind of peeled a little bit more right I was hitting my driver unbelievable swinging so soft and I’m under this tree and my cat caddy all day that we’ve T we did a whole episode on this but yep I can he said hey man you don’t have to your normal swing is plenty here you don’t have to overswing just give me your normal stock swing he’d say that to me before every swing and I’m under this tree and I had a pitching wedge in my hand and a full swing would not it would have hit the branch so he said yeah man just started a little left and give it a little Punchy and I remember feeling with the current swing feel I didn’t even know how to punch it because I’m kind of doing these like laid off in front of me Cuts punches historically were kind of like punch draw type feels I didn’t really know how to do it and the funny thing was he goes just you got this just aim a little left and hit it a little lower and I remember I looked at the left part of the green I didn’t I wasted no time and I hit this unbelievable mid flighted pitching wags to a foot from under the tree tap in birdie and I remember thinking I don’t know how I did that but and that’s okay sometimes right oh 100% I think there’s actually to that just reacted should just feel the shot and do it right I didn’t necessarily I think I’ve been so attached to figur wanting to know how I did it maybe there’s some beauty in not knowing how I did it and maybe there’s some some unused magic some stale magic in me right that I haven’t used in so long because I bring technicality I mean it’s such a cliche thing but I I play golf sing every hole every round yeah that I play I mean you know depending on what level you’re at guys there’s always going to be an there’s always this component of it’s got you have to have a golf feel for each shot versus a golf swing I should right because reverse positional right you got to go low you got to go high to Bunk there’s a feel in those rehearsals you have to make the rehe that’s important guys to the rehearsal those rehearsal practice swings have to be exactly what you’re about to do right with if it’s a punch under a tree or if it’s a 60 W yard wide Fairway driver those are Fields um so you have to do those fields but there is like you said something more sensory about that versus okay checkpoints right with your with your hands your arms your shoulders of like I gotta do this get here to get here to get there that’s no good and I think that’s what you’ve been really trapped with right and I I forget the exact quote but there’s some quote that when you’re really you know frustrated and amidst the struggle the greatest thing you can do is subtract and I think that has to do with life in regards to you’re probably overwhelmed what’s the one thing you can do today you know what’s the one task I need to do I think um that is certainly true when I’m playing golf like I if I’m feeling lost it probably means I’m trying to do too many things my brain is totally getting in the way and so yesterday I maybe was two days ago I went to the driving range CU I am playing tomorrow and I was like let’s just see what happens if I just focus look I know here’s the funny thing you know I posted what should we do when we celebrate 100,000 followers on Instagram on our story and you know I got some funny comments I got like six comments it’s like fix your swing fix your inside takeaway little motivation yeah I’m like I’m like guys no one’s trying harder but but you know what’s funny though Sur guess who had an inside takeaway with an open face at the old course in 2015 when I shot a 75 Evan singer you know guess who had an open face when I was hitting miraculous shots when I needed to on Sunday matches in the Ricky cup like that was me but then I was thinking about it I never had a downswing feel during those days I always had like a takeaway thing but then I just let it set at the top and I [ __ ] fired away and I did that at the range yeah and and that and what that means have is your Tempo was so much better then right we all have flawed golf swings yeah because we do we have to be better with our Tempo yeah right so if you’re inside steep over the top move is your move unfortunately okay but the minute you have you have a downswing thought you’re getting too fast and then you’re your mind knows you’re out of control then you try to steer it with the face and you open it or close it right yeah where that old swing I’ve seen the videos not perfect flawed but just looks like you’re going after it in a smooth way yeah I mean you saw some smooth swings for me at um what’s the little nine hole the city marit first hole bombed it second hole bombed it me it’s in there it’s just how are we going to convince ourselves right so I think there’s always been this inner fight of like I’m not good enough to swing with no swing thoughts you know and I’m going to do an experiment tomorrow I’m going to go play with three buddies and we joked about this before we started recording and I just want to do an experiment you know like who cares I’m gonna swing I’m gonna accept that my club goes inside right I’m gonna play it I’m gonna have good Rhythm and I’m just gonna swing I’m not going to have I’m I’m going to do my best to not have anything get in the way of that and and I’m going to raise my hand I’m going to be the first one to raise my hand if I get technical they have water balloons they have a super soaker and they have tortillas to hit me in the face you guys are taking carts to bring all the equipment you know I think we are probably taking cards super soers I mean I mean ier guy are you I W yeah me and Joe my brother used to have wars in the backyard was there anything better than getting a Super Soaker or a Nerf gun as a kid uh some of the best yeah so they’re going to have that in the cart and I’m going to we’re going to film it tomorrow for YouTube and you’re going to be drenched no I’m just kidding this is I might be I’m gonna do my best because I went to the range and I just started swinging and shots that seemed impossible started to happen and I’m just G to try it you know I’m not saying that I’m try no no stop it you’re not GNA try you’re gonna do it I’m gonna do it but I’m not not saying that I’m Giving Up on lessons I’m not saying that lessons have made me worse I’m just saying if we take a step back and we really understand ourselves what do I know about myself I’m not a technical person but I’ve become a technical golfer yeah and I need to try the opposite to see what happens I mean I I did that at Lakeside and I shot an 80 right and I still had some pretty horrific misses but I also had some pretty amazing shots too that’s golf you have big misses so that’s gonna be a good experiment that’s gonna be fun yeah this is gonna but I think that’s I think that’s the thing to maybe think about for the listeners of like look I could go down the same rabbit hole that I’ve gone down for almost two decades and say I’m lost I need help we need to go back to the drawing board I need to fix th this inside takeaway is killing me but then you got to really check yourself and be like hey I had that before and I seem to hit it better so clearly I think there’s a level of just too much in my brain and also just tentativeness right um I think it’s natural to feel tentative when you miss it pretty poorly um and I’m just going to try and make full rhythmic swings and let’s see if that unlocks something you know I think full full red swings right I mean that’s what we I’m I’m struggling to do that right it’s it’s with the right plan yeah you know yeah you gota with the what is the shot call for also side note hit my first seven wood you’ve been talking about the seven wood I think everybody needs a seven wood I think you made my first hole in one with the seven wood did you really when I was 13 V seven Woods were big back then and they’ve made a comeback 181 yards I love I mean DJ’s kind of popularized it again but isn’t it funny how like uncomfortable I am to have to hit a four iron like why not remove that b exactly why would I be scared to hit a club when I don’t let Ryan or the guys make fun of you you I’ve been they’ve been making fun of me for using two hybrids in college oh yeah it’s a joke but here and I’m like I’m like okay you hit your you hit your three iron I’ll show you what I can do with my three Hy I’ll hit it closer yeah here’s another fun example um I’m playing at this course in LA on last weekend and there’s this par five elevated T there’s a ravine um on the right of the landing area so you have to hit a 200 yard shot to to straight straight ahead short of a bunker and then you have like a 280 yard shot downhill severely downhill to a green for your second shot in a par five Super Fun hole um I lose my ball way right lose the ball off the T with a five iron I drop to the right I take out my three-wood I see the green 280 yards away and I hit it in the green side bunker just an absolute [ __ ] laser and I intended to smash it too and I just that’s like your perfect shot right you know it’s it’s really interesting to think about what’s the difference between those two guys right you could argue well sure you feel more confident with one club because you’ve had better results with it so clearly it’s easier to walk into a shot with a three-wood more confident than it is with a five iron but then maybe I need to get clear on okay well if I’m that uncomfortable with a five iron and I’m not I’m barely gonna get to this green if I’m lucky anyways then do I really need to hit the five iron should I hit a seven should I hit a six this is what it comes down to tell me if you agree you have a three-wood in your hand from 280 yards out from the rough MH I’m just going to rip it I know I can’t get there just gonna hit it there’s guys on the green too I’ve got right I’m not gonna I’m not gonna right I’m not gonna hit them I have no little specific Target in my mind I have no thoughts about the results versus hitting the 3-wood you know from 235 you know trying to thread it in there why can’t you you make a totally different swing right I mean i’ I’ve see I’ve been seeing this is my my game last couple round struggling on Long par Theses hitting bad shots struggling on part three in general right now in in the tournament hitting hybrid again 215 Yard part three is difficult it’s a difficult hole but you know 15 20 yard push but then I’m on the par five in the rough and I got to take it over a tree and outut of balances left and I just lock in to and it’s because I’m making more an aggressive swing to my target versus trying to thread thread the thread the needle and think about a birdie you think that’s a really hard balance to aggressive and not over swing well there’s differ between aggressive and swinging hard what do you how do you define that difference I mean I think you should make an aggressive swing every time right should never be tentative right you got to cut it loot right you gotta rip through it right whether you’re whether you’re hitting it whether you’re choking up on it you know or you know you’re try choking up on a nine iron or you’re trying to hit a you know you’re in a part five with a wide open Fairway right does that make sense yeah because that’s where we struggle that’s where I’ve been struggling IR I’m getting I get small in my setup I’m not sure what to do I’m trying to find my my alignment my body to guide it right and that’s the worst yeah you know it’s interesting when I shot 79 so I come off the 84 I’m like gez that sucked and then I’m going to play nolwood which is a great club with my buddies uh Mike educate such a great host um no’s a good club it’s a CHL in design it’s just an awesome Place tough track first hole is 4 440 or 430 OB right bunker left it’s good opening hole and you know kind of coming off a pretty shaky performance didn’t really warm up that great I rip a driver right off the bunker looks like it’s just gonna with a little cut looks like it’s gonna be perfect I get up there it’s in the bunker I’m like [ __ ] and right my uh guy one of the guys I was playing with his ball our ball looked at the exact same line and his ball was in the Fairway just missed the bunker this is golf but it’s like like jeez now that ball doesn’t I make a good swing on on a nervous first te like we all get and if that ball is four yards to the right I’m a totally different guy walking up to that ball isn’t that amazing yeah what the results due to us and why is that well now I’ve got to try to hit a four iron from one you know or five iron from 180 versus from the bunker versus the fway right second okay end up hitting a good bunker shot out and I made par second hole I hit a three-wood cut off the bunkers 340 hole perfect knocked it on two putut it third hole okay this is the interesting part this is part of my Reflections like why figured out what really happened here 350 355 yard hole little dog like right downwind it’s not a long hole driver 3w driver 3w driver 3w like hit this driver cut off that left bunker let’s do it looks like there’s enough room to the left in my head though I’m like I mean my but what was also my head like this is a short hole hit just don’t have to try to shape a three hit three with hybrid just bust it what do I do I hadit a low pull with a driver Into the Bunker and then what do I do because I’m just well it’s a short hole still make birdie hit the lip on my second shot try to pull a seven iron instead of you know an n maybe a n there and said you know what just try to get it out in front of the green and pitch on and see if you can make the punt yeah so I end up and I made double so so so I go from a great start to the you know really first go feeling good and then I’m two over after three really because of one bad decision off the te and then I compounded it with another bad decision sure should I be should I make a better swing should I yes should I have made a better T buker shot swing yes but I don’t practice it that that much anymore and those flaws will get expose you know yeah so I’m two over after three but it’s in the world seems like it’s just crashing down but it’s really just comes down to wasn’t 100% committed off the tea and then I just should have been smarter okay you’ve screwed up you’ve screwed up get out of trouble instead of like well still make birdie bad bad so I just want to share some of that so these are the things that you know you find like there was another hole in the back nine to you know and I shot 4138 so I came back it’s just part four long there’s trouble left bunker big bunker on the right side of the Fairway I’m thinking tell you the left was in my head the trouble left was in my head so I’m like you know what I’m going to take this the right edge of the I’m going to take this towards the bunker swing hard and try to miss it big because if you miss it big you’re right at the bunker you’re in the rough but you got an angle Oh I thought I did that what happened here the cat go oh all just kicks left into the bunker you know I’m like are you serious again I’m missing the Fairway right like but I did my plan of all right you’re not feeling you don’t left’s a little in your head Mak it big right so what if that ball doesn’t go you know ended up making a bogey you know but what if that ball doesn’t kick left what if it’s just I maybe any other day kick straight or kicks right and I’ve got aund whatever shot in and I hit it to 20 feet make the butt it’s a totally different thing yeah and I think we have to kind of realize this is just how do you how do you how do you come back from bad decisions and bad breaks that’s that’s what golf is well you know what’s interesting about all that and how do you keep your mind just not fixated on well I was scared of left okay happens to all of us we get scared out there right but it’s It’s the reaction that’s worse right it’s the you know I’ve I’ve been thinking a lot about lately how how much different I am on the first on the first hole than I am the 16th hole Yeah first hole I’ve got a great routine I’m committed um I’m committed to slowing down I’m committed to getting clear 16th hole I feel like I blew it again I the whole thing is a failure right our brains um the our brains don’t know gray our brains are are you safe or did you ruin it again it goes to the extremes our brains naturally go to the extremes but I think I think what you’re getting it we have to get to the gray oh yeah like I think what you’re outlining is something we’ve all felt it’s like we’re we don’t you probably didn’t even realize in the moment you’re just kind of wrapped up in it you’re wrapped up in the results H I thought I hit that good I can’t believe it’s in the bunker right or I I thought that missed right I can’t believe it kicked left but it’s like the funny thing is you don’t know what’s going to happen from there so like I could have been really pissed at Lakeside that I hid it under the tree I had a great round going but I actually the funny thing I did the opposite because I had so much it’s funny your scar tissue serm is messing up and then messing up again right because I pride myself on right not messing up or coming back after a mess up right so you’re pissed because you didn’t do what you pride yourself on I wasn’t pissed that I missed right because I hit a solid Drive I didn’t block it so I didn’t do the thing that I hate I was actually pretty happy with the strike so I was like all right I guess it’s under the tree a little bit if I had gotten pissed that it was under under that tree you think I would have hit it to a foot zero chance there’s no way I would have been committed yeah well it’s okay to be I mean it’s okay to be piss it’s okay to be pissed it’s just for sure but you when you get up near the ball you’re finding Clarity to hit the smart safe shot right it’s like and that’s what we that’s that’s the hard part it’s like if we spent all day getting frustrated about the thing that didn’t go the way we would have wanted then you kind of miss out on the beauty of the walk the conversations but also the like unfolding the beautiful thing about my favorite rounds and the times that I feel most fulfilled with the game are when I stay in it I stay a little bit more neutral and things unfold and I’m under a tree but I end up making birdie and that would have never been a planned birdie that was not some yeah how often am I making birdie when I’m trying to make birdie they just kind of happen I I didn’t mean to stick it I didn’t mean to miss it there but like that’s kind of what golf is and I and I will say this I will make this very clear this is so much easier to to say than do but that’s kind of the point of the show is to bring us back and just try again when I what what I have found myself you know in that 84 and that 79 these last couple when I I’ve really got myself in trouble mentally is two things is trying to make sense of why it’s why the ball’s going overly try to make sense why it’s going this way or that way why am I doing this that is killer and then also um playing playing to get it back just let’s get it back let’s remember you make a five it’s you make a six it’s not leaving the SC card you make a double and people say you made a birdie you got it back well no I mean it’s just it’s there but it’s that attitude of like there’s I gotta I gotta get it back I gotta get it back I got we gotta give ourselves chances to me that’s terrible where I where I when I do well it’s especially when I’m strugg if you’re struggling out there is keep fighting and keep playing smart yeah just because fighting is don’t give up like like and that’s my point about gave up yeah right I assumed it’s over it’s a bad round I can’t figure I’m not doing anything right and I mail it in and I just soak in the shame first hole doesn’t have that and that’s a choice yeah harder obviously after 15 holes that’s a choice it’s harder but it’s a choice and maybe there’s something else we can focus on you know like I think for you getting that’s a great reminder too like if you’re struggling play even more conservative yeah and again make aggressive swings but you’ve just got to think a little differently yeah like and that’s when I couldn’t figure out in the 84 like quit trying to quit trying to hit the perfect eight IR seven IR we don’t have it today what are we doing like yeah it’s for you clear yeah getting really clear on the shot you’re trying to hit you can’t walk into the shot until you are clear and look I think I probably need to take a lesson something doesn’t quite feel right in my setup you know the ball you know can’t quite figure out where it’s going so that’s always important too yeah um see that’s such a dream lesson to get and maybe that’s how I need to look at lessons like I keep looking for the Silver Bullet to fix fix me help me get my takeaway right what’s the OV exaggerated feel to stop rolling it for you it’s like to get a lesson to just hey check my setup is anything off yeah that’s like a dream of mine because all because what we have what the great challenge is is to to be good at this pretty good at this game is to just is manage the bad rounds better right because most of the time you’re hitting a lot just bad shots right it’s going into a few less bunkers off the tea you know it’s if you don’t like to look at this hole it’s like decade golf it’s aiming right and the trouble’s all left y it’s you know yeah that pin looks good yeah I’m 110 yards out but you know what 15 feet sounds like it’s freeing me up you know now I’m not so interested or worried about is it the Gap is is the 58 is it the 54 gotta cover this isn’t that interesting enough yeah you know you that 54 in your hand from 110 yards like oh this is birdie time yeah you know some Las thing to close out on that that point is to your point about not swinging over swing but swinging aggressive I think that’s why for me I found that if I’m in between clubs I have to take the shorter one yeah because and that’s usually and SW and swing harder yes yeah and that’s traditionally what you’re taught yes because if the second be be free the second that I think I need to baby this yeah it might be too much I don’t know how to hit that shot I really don’t and I think I just need to accept that you know like that’s a good that’s a good reflection yeah I think I think overall it’s so funny we know when remember we did the commitment challenge a couple years ago and we realized you know we we counted on YouTube you can watch it if you want um we counted how many times we counted our commitment percentage and then we compared the shots we weren’t committed to the shots we were and obviously the ones we weren’t committed were usually the bad ones but we found that it was actually hard to figure out if it was a committed swing it was easier to figure out if we’re committed to the plan and it’s pretty easy to know if you feel good you you hear Tor Cates say this all the time you feel good about that you like it yeah I like this I like it if you don’t have a I like this play and here’s why going in the shot you’re probably not committed so if you’re not committed then why not right am I trying to baby a club it’s too long am I hitting the driver because I think I should but I don’t want to well and 100% but I’ll take it a step further I just thought about this a lot of the time we’re just trying to get to feeling okay yeah because you know the 220 par three over the water give me the seven wood man give me the seven wood you know or the 440 dog leg laugh without a balance laugh when are who says when are you how are we G to get you to feel really good right that’s a great Point try feel maybe I gave you a seven out right but we can’t do that so it’s two options right it’s okay it’s the driver we got to get to feel okay and way we get to feeling okay is just finding a big Target or it’s taking less Club taking a 3-wood or an hward and bring you up to feel good at a smaller Target I think that’s because I mean you know I’m playing the qualify my brother in yours you know and it was great there’s but there’s there’s a little bit you know you’re playing a tournament you know and some holes you feel good some you don’t feel you I feel okay trouble’s left it’s a long hole all right they got to miss it right but still make a pass at it you know right like I hope I can hit the fway but I’m just it’s it’s challenging but I really think we have to set expectations when it’s tough out there there’s challenging holes and there’s a lot of them challenging moments how do we find a way to get to okay yeah and if we gota get and if that doesn’t feel right all right we gotta find a way to get good just gotta do it differently also last a more conservative plan but an aggressive swing imagine an amateur golfer that didn’t try to fix problems in the round I’ve interviewed some pros I interviewed Hannah and Frederick at the PJ show that you couldn’t come this year but um it was just me and them and I will never forget what Hannah said to me some some crazy Miss happened she goes I don’t have time to fix this right now right I’m in the round I can’t worry about this right now right not never not ignoring it but that’s for later I’ve just got to go be my best on the next shot I just need to play the round right so I think what I’ve learned from you today if we’re if we’re going to sum this all up is what do we do in our worst rounds well I think we go into fix it mode pretty quick um well it’s it’s figure what figure out the answer and then fix and then and then try to fix it right it’s too full so search mode and fix mode right yeah trying to find the answer versus just like what happened though right processing Computing yeah right it’s not like it’s not about the Miss it’s about what happened before and and maybe it’s just a bonehead swing maybe just move on don’t take too much stock from it but I think we posted on Instagram once that the difference between amure golfers and pro golfers is pro golfers underreact amateur golfers overreact and oh yeah for sure and so this and it’s the good round and it’s the good rounds versus the bad rounds oh yeah and you know like me getting excited because I’m in the Fairway I overreacted overreacted uh when I missed the six iron and I lost my ball with six iron overreacted um didn’t really understand what actually happened oh no so we don’t get clear on what happens we overreact to both good and bad um we get to technical play golf swing and we aren’t committed at all with kind of shot we want to yeah and I would push you and encourage you and anybody listening is after every round whether it’s your 72 78 88 or 98 you gotta think about every hole just go go back write it how did I you know and obviously you’re going to dwell on the bad fine start with the bad holes well what actually happened right where was my mind at what was the situation what was the wind what was the shape what was the dog leg what what did I just do on the previous screen and then you you do every hole because you’ll find the good ones too and it’s like it’s the same exercise and that’s it’s amazing what you learn yeah and actually it’ll free you up and calm you down a little bit too and look I get it for anyone listening that’s like how do I not try and fix it when I walk into a round and I top the first four drives what am I doing why is this happening right that’s normal but instead of thinking about what am I doing in my swing that’s causing that probably just a simple let’s slow down so tomorrow EV you are going to play and there’s nowhere for me to hide by the way I’m on camera so you guys will be able to see this I’m gonna go having a plan and having good Tempo I mean that’s how we all need to play You’re really trying to do it you’re really try I’m just really trying to like whatever swing I have that’s it you’re not going from thought to thought no and that’s what I’m gonna do tomorrow wow talk about a challenge and we’re gonna see and by the way I shot in the N I shot 90 and 92 my last two rounds I mean it’s like tough game what are we doing you know I think that’s what we need is what what am I doing I need to think about it after why do I why do I not play pickle ball more you know yeah man imagine starting a sport with no learning curve yeah and then a sport that has a steep learning curve no matter how long you’re playing it that’s what’s crazy is there any other sport like that I don’t think so no stop thinking less thinking more doing yeah well I hope this helped guys I hope this was funun trying to come back Midsummer we’re trying to make our way back you know and I’m thinking it’s funny when you struggle you you start to project out in the future of what you have um and you think about future trips and we’re going to San Valley next month [Music] um yeah so good stretch yeah so no matter how you guys are hitting it no matter how bad you scored no matter how bad this stretch has been for you um highly doubt it’s been as bad as me but um I’m I’m there for you it’s been tough for me last couple and um you know we’re here for you and I hope this episode really helped and no matter what you’re going through right now what do they got to do sir just enjoy the ride try and enjoy the ride guys I know it’s tough but we got to try our best just do it thanks guys
