Ryder Cup captaincy stunner, In-Out-Alt for Barbasol, & Scottish scuttlebutt | The Shotgun Start

Andy and Brendan are all over the place for this Wednesday episode, which begins with some intel from the ground at the Scottish Open, where a frugal one was casing the free coffee cart on the driving range at the Renaissance Club. Then they get to the massive, surprising news of the week that Keegan Bradley will be the 2025 Ryder Cup captain at Bethpage. They react to the apparent haphazard PGA process that landed with Keegan, the fact that Zatch made the call to him, and the genuine love Bradley clearly displays for this event. Will it be a good pick? They also discuss Xander Schauffele’s quotes that Keegan needs to cut down on the mandatory dinners. They eventual get to the schedule for the week, which starts with an In-Out-Alternate for the newly-named Kentucky event that will remain the Barbasol here. Then they get to the Scottish Open, Rory’s return, and two majors on the Senior and LPGA tours. They close it with news of Joost Luiten getting banned from Olympics golf again.

greetings and welcome to a Wednesday edition of the shotgun start it is July 10th Andy how we doing Brendan I’m doing great I mean the uh the content gods have delivered in the form of a Ridder Cup captain that nobody saw or expected coming for Beth pagee I think I’m just at the point where I don’t think anything quite delivers content like the like the American Ridder Cup team they might be the content machine of all content machines I mean this is in the internet age it really is uh and like the Dirty Little Secret is the Ryder Cup as a competition has not been particularly close for a while now really since 2012 I would say am I am I missing one in there I think it’s 2012 was the last one that felt really competitive and yet the content continues to be uh Bountiful uh and I guess that gets us to the shocking news I all I care about it seems predictable the home team wins the home team wins by a lot that’s sort of been the the blueprint of the of the Ryder Cup for a while now so let’s get us out of the cabal at least give us some a captain that is just a Content curveball and I think that’s what we got in Keegan Bradley some shocking Monday news news Break by Bob per of Sports Illustrated so that’s where we’re headed it’s just going to be it’s going to be a circus people already picking and prodding at the timeline of how this happened you know it’s it’s a little awkward I mean first of all are we just going into this is this what you want to talk about right away want to talk about I mean I had something else I was I was gonna kick your way kick my way kick my way I think this might be a better you know bigger piece of news what personally what hearing reports G anecdotes reports someone’s played their way back into the Rolex series events do you know who’s played their way back into the Rolex series events what player has earned earned his way back into the into the luxurious confines of the Rolex event is it a guy who went to live who because because they now get double dual citizenship essentially somebody that maybe have fallen Fallen fallen on tough times in his golf game and he now back back up because of uh performance who is it in Rolex series Mr Fratelli The Frugal fatelli is back up into the the Rolex event why is he playing the Scottish he won like the South African thing in the in the in the winter or something oh and it gets him into the Rolex series is that what he yeah so he’s back in the in the you know the Rolex events has perks you know there they there’s a little bit more player Hospitality some nice things and th this week in particular there’s a uh a best-in-class barista trucker thing out on the Range apparently you know thanks to the Fine people at Genesis there is quite quite the Barista van or whatever out on the range for players I had forgotten go ahead what what what had you forgotten I had forgotten that Frugal forelli had existed quite honestly and they were doing a montage of recent John Deer winners late Sunday night on the CBS and with the bouncing deer trophy holding the and I totally forgot the Frugal one had won the deer and it still existed quite honestly which is shame on me given that he’s been such a prominent figure in this podcast history so he’s getting some for new listeners for any new listen you know when when Dylan forelli was more of a force in the game of golf there was a lot of uh stories of his uh maybe cutting Corners ways that he was going about cutting costs and you know including Sun Sleeves because he doesn’t like buying sunscreen you know player dining escapades and This falls into thatting receipts during the pandemic mad about the uh P the protection Char search charge for the you know guy dish in your bowl of Cava making eight bucks an hour an extra dollar on this he that that the rumors of his frugalness were quickly he showed his cards and receipts literally on that one he brought the receipts and exposed himself so that’s how he became known as Frugal for telli he is off with a Powerhouse Trio at Scottish open just a just a just a tea time after own Hearts Vincent Norman the Candyman from Sweden I we can’t go about explaining all these back uh these nicknames the Candyman Vincent Norman and Dan Brown the author forelli Dan Brown The Da Vinci Cod Z Dan Brown I like that when you you with Shack on descri you said the author The prominent author Dan Brown it even got a chuckle out got I know Shaq’s a listener at times but you know he’s a serious ious Compadre you know I didn’t want I didn’t know how much silliness I should interweave in that podcast but I had to get off a damn Brown joke when he came up so so can I tell the story about what about fortelli yeah so there’s this Barista truck I didn’t even know there was more to it and the Barista truck has a food offering some like sausage rolls and hot items of that God so much better than Keegan run-of-the-mill Keegan chatter okay so uh forelli apparently was lingering around and started talking to the the the workers that were you know that were making the wonderful cups of Joe and lattes actually not cups of Joe lattes over there yeah and uh and he’s ask he starts ask wait you know you guys are you guys gonna have sandwiches all week is this going to be open all week with sandwiches oh yes yes what time do you guys close what time are you closing up no and they say 800 pm he goes oh 8m so our our reporter the reporting you know uh you know our unsubstantiated Storyteller here said it was as if I was watching a man case a place for his later you know visit to come pillage it for for uh for snacks later at at his at his residence so I mean you know a little tip for telly could be pretty happy with his with his balance sheet this week you know with the with cutting costs because of the because of the Barista truck he could be a good play just on the happiness meter because he could be visiting that thing at 8800 PM every day to load up you know he could be eating all three meals at the Barista truck I mean I our our this is an honor our our unsubstantiated unidentified informant this is like watching Michelangelo paint the 16 Chapel when you get to see this and I mean that’s good stuff you know this is breakfast lunch and dinner he’s not stopping on the way to the course to get a coffee and a croissant he’s got lined everything lined up on the Range he’s gonna be bobbing over the range to hit a couple balls quote unquote practice on his way out people are going to think he’s really grinding like the Bryson hitting ball still dark method but really it’s just there picking up free sandwiches all day I predict Frugal fortelli finds his way into a gig at as a master’s like walking reporter or media can you imagine him in that Master’s Media Center just going to town on the grab and go free sandwiches all the snacks you could ever want he’d be like that guy you popped just loading stuff into his cooler you know that’s exactly what he he going to figure out how to become a a reporter at the Masters one day I’m hearing reports that uh that there might be might be uh some changes to the grab and grow area because of because of that guy you ruined it you ruined it for everyone no tweeted about I think there going to be positive changes there might be you know they’re talking about maybe a discreet sign you know okay okay cameras like an electric fence or something when you go for the fifth one you get should be a shock collar you know everybody you should have to scan them on your way out God frugal frugal light would be a bigan [ __ ] at that Master’s Media Center um all right so we got the Scottish open where do you want to go next should we talk about Keegan Bradley introduced today as the Ryder Cup captain uh I mean there’s a lot of things to talk about with this you know we got in out alternate too okay God jam-packed jam-packed jam-packed episode I think I think we got to talk about Keegan I love the fact that he had no conversations about this I love this no interview before being asked just got the job this is like an old school type like uh just playing off my gut my hunch process be damned buddy ball task force whatever else be damned there was a list of names clearly they were sort of left in the Lurch by Tiger who knows if tiger would be a good captain or not separate issue um tiger can’t do it they’re like it’s awkward as hell they’re reading Tiger’s statement about him why he can’t do it in the middle of questions to Keegan Bradley like okay let’s get back to the actual Pro like just the elephant in the room is that this is circumstance born of by Tiger not taking the job um tiger by the way it seems like Tiger’s near a lock for a Dar Manor near a lock for a Dar Manor very close with JP mcmanis JP mcmanis will say I want you to do it he’s gonna do it uh sounds like it could be even Rory on the other side would be a bonanza that’d be awesome I mean I assume Rory would be a playing Captain still at that point maybe not but it tiger Rory that would be cool uh at a d Manor because I guess when the course owner has that kind of ability to put his thumb on the scale that may be what happened but right now we have Keegan Bradley kind of feels like a slap dash shery of a process I don’t want to get to the result I’m not talking about Keegan as the captain we’ll get to that the process sounds like a shery to fulfill this kind of [ __ ] Preposterous one year to go ceremony thing that we’re all supposed to care about well the one year to go is coming up we got to get a captain and so they got one we Z back up there can I tell you is that not the corniest damn thing that Zach was the one that called him and said it’s you after jamming them last year with a just a horrible full swing sort of laid that bear poorly handled poorly delivered uh picks process I don’t not even getting into the underlying result underlying choices of who was better but it was not carried out I would say with any kind of uh smoothness or Grace and Zach is the one that calls him again this year but it’s kind of kind you know what it’s kind of like it’s kind of like on one of those crappy dating shows when uh when someone tries to make a play for someone else you know they try and make a play for somebody else and they get shot down and they come crawling back to the person they’ve been with having Zach call Keegan not good not a good look not a good look at all it was weird I mean Zach shouldn’t be in you know full stop Zach Zach should be banned shouldn’t be with all all team competitions restrain from yeah there should he shouldn’t be allowed to even be involved anymore with anything Kean expressed a classic was Zach worse than Tom Watson no no no I mean Tom Watson we had some some I mean there were some stuff going on it feels like going on to the the presidential race right now with Tom Watson where we we needed to tap on the shoulder like what’s going on let’s can we put one sentence on top of the other no I don’t think that I mean he got jammed he got a he got a tough draw playing away but he’s just he was no good jammed or did he Jam himself could have been jammed double jam self-inflicted and by the circum question everybody always should ask themselves whenever they feel like they they got jammed am I did I get jammed or did I Jam myself that’s fair that was uh that reminds me of the great quote from our friend Dr Joe McGoldrick uh who the the doctor heart surgeon heart transplant surgeon we met in Northern Ireland legendary yeah he’s literally you know grabbing Hearts off of a box putting them in somebody’s chest as it’s flowing around the World he’s talking about the nerve he said situations don’t create chaos people do a great little uh quip that he threw out there and that’s something where you gotta think about if I did I get jammed or did I create this jamming situation Jam myself situations don’t create chaos people do uh Keegan is your captain it’s a chaotic situation what’s the what’s the GU uh lson lson Mr Larson’s shirt and uh in half Gilmore guns don’t kill people yes yes that’s fair like who’s culpable in this whole chaotic situation PJ of America clearly pulling it together on the Fly I love it when it came out I love it I love it because you know we do a podcast however however many times a week we’re supposed to write about this it feels like a curveball from the content Gods I don’t know if it’ll be good or bad uh it’s Unique it’s different it’s not stew sink it’s not Fred Couples it’s not dl3 for a third time yeah furick again Steve Stricker again the cabal has been broken up the swamp has been drained we’ve gone completely off the board to someone they hadn’t even talked to or interviewed zero process it seems like and a 38-year-old I love that you know the keys to the kingdom have apparently been handed to John Wood who seems like a very smart fella capable but they just everybody every question to John Linder the PGA guy and even Keegan were like well we’ve got John Wood now we’ve got John Wood John Wood’s in the F how are you gonna balance a tour schedule and be Captain well we’ve got John Wood now like okay I get all right I I think he’s a great caddy good great analyst on TV but I don’t know why this is some silver bullet for the whole thing um I find Keegan to be a bit Charming at this point John Wood might be getting the Jason Gore treatment of mending fences with the players at the usgaa or like just just Jason Gore we got Jason Gore we got yeah and it became it’s just Jason Gore just went went through the roof in like a fiveyear span and I’m not saying it was undeserved but it feels the same way where it’s like well we got Jason Gore the USGA was like we we have we’ve got Jason Gore right PGA now is like you know this Ridder cup thing’s been a disaster we got John Wood right right I I find real full full quick quick question yeah can you imagine how many how many tournaments JT would have won if John Wood was his caddy that’s the lunch pen to it all the Looper uh you were you will you will be 60 years old still throwing that one out about JT’s caddy B the people who said bones that’s all of a sudden he wouldn’t you’ve win 10 times a year you’re still gonna be playing that one um I find Keegan to be quite sh C the CES hit the shots when when you have when you have one of the bless the media favorite Cades they actually hit the shots that’s what happens and that’s that’s This was um in addition to the process being some what ham fist did or last second the the whole broadcast of it was a complete mess today the audio issues were a total joke I mean it was Cav’s Valley episode put this the audio on this thing to shame uh there was Zero audio on Golf Channel first 20 minutes apparently no one recognized it no one realized it 20 minutes we’re talking rder cup had a stream Listen Hold on hold on Sam flood he told us that the important important events never been more focused on the important events this wasn’t an important event this wasn’t the US Open so listen that that’s just the way way it goes with with Golf Channel this was after it was leaked via footage they didn’t know was live on Monday of this NASDAQ I mean come on why do we go to the NASDAQ what’s the na like the sentimental value of going to the freaking NASDAQ to announce this what does that matter um so got footage on Monday of this this mock trial announcement with Keegan and Graphics someone sent us the audio it was apparently being broadcast all over YouTube TV I have a 22-minute audio file on my computer of these jamokes where they’re like talking about keeg and this ke and then they realized at the 22-minute Mark like oh [ __ ] we’re live and they cut it it’s pretty great I’ll send it to you last minute of the files you’re like oh [ __ ] they can they hear us and they shut it off so that’s Monday you you got to share this stuff we could have uploaded that we could have gotten it into our we could have been dropping in dropping an audio and and you know we could have had the people at NBC [Laughter] saying so that’s Monday then Tuesday they come out they forgot to plug the cord back in is my guess from when they went oh [ __ ] pulled it on Monday Tuesday they come back no audio first 20 minutes there’s a Ridder cup stream show in it you can get it there then they realize there no audio they pull the plug on that one so everybody watching on Twitter can’t watch wherever’s going there and we got to go to golf was just an embarrassment they got Zoom questions you got old Martin Davis you know’s trying to figure out zoom and ask a qu like the audio was a just complete catastrophe I don’t know if it’s Golf Channel NASDAQ PGA whatever it is figure it out who was not a catastrophe Was Keegan quite honestly that’s all that matters I you know does this matter to the competition who can say he’s 38 the cup clearly means a lot to him I find him to be quite genuine I don’t think he’s a phony I think you can exaggerate in certain places like just just that’s how people talk you get carried away you start going like that was one of the best things in my life we never exaggerate on this podcast right no I but I think he’s super genuine and how meaningful all this is to him I thought it was super cool to hear him talk about watching it at Brookline as a kid and what it how that changed his life forever and how he wanted to do this from ever since then clearly the Madina thing has had a powerful impact on his career his personality um and his kind of goals and drive for the rest like this is a competition that it’s he’s not doing this because it will bring him increased profile though it will or bring him or he’s power hungry or you know the sponsor said he should do it I think he’s doing it because he absolutely freaking loves it loves everything about this competition and you know if there’s someone who’s invested in it for like quote unquote the right reasons to use your dating show analogy uh earlier I think that’s a good thing and I love that it’s a total total out of left field pick for our purposes where do you land on it well you know with the dating show reality usually the person that you come back they come back to is not the the not you know my wife likes this TV so I you know I catch this every once in a while it’s often not the uh the shiny new object that’s introduced you know it’s so often the one that that actually likes the person so it’s a good comp keeg I mean I don’t know I I don’t think you know what as much as I just yelled that Zack Johnson should be banned from every team competition moving forward which I stand by stand by that take I’m just going to say I don’t think this really matters I think they could have Joe Missoula you know talk about surprise head coaches you could bring bring Joe Missoula in and he’d probably do a better job than Zack Johnson you know all you need is a competent leader that understands people now like that would be my question does is this person socially smart if they’re socially smart and and understand that like hey like there’s some tools that I can use to to figure this out out and you know it should you like they understand like the the way team sports work and how you know if the player that you know you don’t necessarily need to pair every everybody who’s friends with anybody together you know you could decide hey you know what there might be a better pairing for you just like somebody you know is going to tell LeBron that bronny can’t play at the end of the game next year because we got better players you know when JJ reck says that that’s that’s the job of a coach you know the captain of the USA team the job is to find the 12 best players for the team in terms of form how they fit together and it’s you know and then who should be paired together based off of their games right like this is not rocket science this is not rocket science at all and you don’t have to have the answers to all of them all you have to do is effectively organize this thing you know you we’ve seen quotes about like what what goes into this and it’s like a lot of it’s like planning dinners you know making sure the clothes are goodth clothes are good so like when we talk about this you just can’t be incompetent here you know one thing I’m worried about they got a Boston guy in Long Island I don’t know if that’s going to go well yeah but he went to St John’s he’s a queen guy that’s fake that’s a fake that’s a fake you know someone was who was telling us someone had traveler somebody said there was a local newspaper guy from New York who who’s trying to play the local say would it be good to come home for a HomeTown Ridder cup to Keegan so it’s like wait wait wait so Travelers is his hometown event he lives home game it’s on inside four hours it’s the home game I was like is he from Queens is he from Boston is he from Vermont or Florida like he’s from everywhere he’s just a world citizen um yeah I don’t mind the Boston connection I Andy they didn’t have a plan they clearly did like Seth was there I saw all the chips were on tiger all the chips were in on tiger the rug got pulled out J I think JP McMahon has personally pulled the rug out from the the all the negotiations I thought tiger would go back to back the negotiations are [ __ ] I mean what what’s he actually doing doesn’t seem like anything going on separate question yeah I it it is it is a separate question that doesn’t seem to be progressing in the way we’re led to believe you want to talk about it seems like it’s a [Applause] disaster why I I just it’s honestly like embarrassing at this point it’s embarrassing that like we were a couple weeks ago it was like oh this is going to happen like expected Tuesday and now it’s like three weeks later we still haven’t gotten the agreement about nothing even we haven’t even agreed to agree about nothing I last I heard like the piff hadn’t even responded them from three weeks ago hadn’t replied to them or something it’s just they’re all over the place the other thing is like here’s the issue the overarching issue with the whole thing where do you think on the scale of like 1 to 10 is this a priority for the piff well well that’s separate issue yaser likes golf does anybody even know what golf is outside of yaser working with the p around so maybe like at an organizational level it’s a three yeah is that is that two down I like lives just this little toy shiny toy that they invested a little bit of a little bit of their money in yeah yeah and meanwhile for the tour it’s like a 12 out of 10 but the organization and and the people people that are running the organization have this other job as professional golfers right and they’re acting like the urgency is like a two out of a 10 they’re acting like it’s a practice round hitting a Chip Shot from around the green to a fake hole yep yep somebody somebody has to have emergency and it ain’t going to come from the other side of the table that probably you know can live if it happens or it doesn’t happen it’s not progressing nothing’s progressing Jordan spee will tell us it’s all good everything’s fine locked in we’re I just I don’t know doesn’t seem like that’s the case um I mean if I was like just like a the 40th ranked player the 40th ranked player in the world maybe maybe the 20th whoever that is who’s the 20th ranked player in the world Max Homer or something let’s look it up right now uh we have Matt Fitzpatrick if I’m Fitzy I might be like hey guys what’s going on like I’d be like knocking on the door it’s like when you when your bag’s missing and nobody’s at the baggage claim area yeah yeah nobody’s that the the like can somebody help me oh that’s good it doesn’t seem to be progressing if you’re a rank and file member you don’t know what’s going on um but I wish we could get I wish we could get Victor havland to weigh in publicly on on how he feels he’s too busy hitting shots with the Mayo man mayo man made his way into social media videos I saw that standing over the a lot of commentary to be honest this is a full disclosure I am not an instruction YouTube guy not like the furthest thing like the last thing that’s coming up in my Instagram feed is golf instruction videos yeah I feel like I know how I swing yep and and I know enough about my own swing I don’t need to you know I don’t need to investigate like I know what to do I didn’t know what the man looked like before the US Open I didn’t either but he’s unmistakable not you know what he looks like he’s got a whole whole vibe that he’s giving off he’s got a brand it
