Catherine, David and Matt will be live to react to Carlos Alcaraz’s 6-2 6-2 7-6 victory over Novak Djokovic in the men’s final.

[Music] [Music] come on Tim hello and welcome to the tennis podcast live from Wimbledon on day 14 the final day of the Championships the day that Carlos alra became a two-time Wimbledon champion I’m Katherine whiter this is Matt Roberts this is David law this is Jude the bear this is our incredible finals day crowd it is uh it is finally a gorgeous evening in SW9 we’re ending on a high folks just like Carlos alcaras great day for David’s 12 in a ro theory for his bucket hat theory for your prediction David yeah yeah it has been a good day um I mean I there a fair way to go for one of those to to actually come off and and I haven’t had as much alcohol as I had this time last year um but I don’t see anything that makes me feel differently really I mean yes that might sound like an absurd number but I think we’ve seen today that he is capable of winning Grand Slams as he did uh a few weeks ago when he’s not playing his best tennis we’ve seen him get to a grand St final when he’s not playing his best tennis and then you’ve seen today what happens when he plays his best tennis and he’s only going to get better if he stays fully fit because he learned something else new today and that’s how to choke and win and I think that that is another dangerous moment for the rest of the tennis playing World Translation two down 10 to go yep two down 10 to go I’m not back in now um one last time thep if you are if you are with us live on YouTube thank you first and foremost hope you’re enjoying being in the chat with Pam Shriver who uh has solved all Tech issues and is uh is chatting up a storm just now hope you’re enjoying that um please do hit like And subscribe if you are with us live on YouTube also one last time we have to say thank you to The Wimbledon shop for kitting us out in various different ways like my newe that I do like your new tie David Matt and I have been wearing matching shirts in different colors today I’ve had to take mine off due to warmth which frankly is not something I was anticipating ever having to do a week ago and we are wearing lovely hats which have at various different times this fortnite protected us from Sun and rain so can vouch for the Hardy nature of all of the clothes to protect you from whatever the British summer might throw at you and uh obviously Wimbledon is over for another year but the Wimbledon shop is available year round online and they do global Shipping and it’s very quick and I’m going to be wearing my strawberry jumper year round I’ve got it in my bag just makes you feel good doesn’t it I was so sure that finals day was going to be a strawberry jumper day but then the sun came out and it’s warm and here we are for strawberry t-shirt and cap day here we are that one that cheer isn’t for us I think it might have been for John Lloyd I’m just going to take it yeah yeah makes us feel a little bit less special yeah yeah okay back to Carlos alarz it is his fourth Grand Slam title he has never lost a grand slam final it’s his second Wimbledon it’s the completion of the channel Slam at 21 years old and it is it is his first time defending a grand slam title that’s all for the what does it mean question which will be coming later in the show and we’ll be talking about that in relation to both finalists today Matt and I have just come from the novat joov press conference that’s why we were a few minutes delayed coming on today and it it was well worth delaying I think because it was it was interesting in there so we’ll talk about all of that but first we need to talk about the match cuz we did a preview show earlier on today looking ahead to this and kind of the headline topic of discussion was how similar a match and out come is this going to be to the final that we had last year and the answer is not at all it could not have been other than ultimate winner it could not have been a more different match to last year right absolutely I mean last year was you know defined at the start by noat jovic coming out and middling the ball and making Carlos alcarez very uncomfortable and jumping out to a lead and it was just so different right from the start here we had novat jovic trying to cling on to his serve in the very first game of the match 14-minute game I think 20 something points and alcarez ultimately getting the break and kind of setting the tone really from that point on and alres was just so Superior to no about jovic in this entire match as as as you’ve referenced there was the choke when he was three Championship points up in a row in in the third set and he then produced a string of errors and ended up having to serve to stay in that third set but that that little moment aside alcarez did everything better than novat jovic today serving in particular n doovic has just said he’s never never seen alcarez serve like that before mid mid 130s pretty consistently returning he was jumping on novat jovic’s serve and from the back of the Court he was way Superior as well hitting huge forehands winners all over the court and jokovic looked pretty lost and pretty rattled very early in this match the number of net approaches in that first set and it continued but especially in the first set was like wow he’s he’s kind of having to resort to coming in and yet that’s not working either the number of volleys that he dumped in the net was pretty shocking and yeah as you said couldn’t have been a more a more different match really in in in terms of like last year was kind of on a knife edge all the time it was the mum was swinging back and forth both players had periods where they were the better player today it was all Carlos alcarez right from the start David there are there are some pundits in this sport who are prone to Hyperbole and I’m going to venture that Tim hemman is not one of those right having having worked with him for a long time he’s featured on this podcast he’s a friend of the show he described this match up until the point that novat jovic broke alcaraz when he was serving for the match and we will talk about that in isolation but up until that point he described it as an Annihilation well yeah that’s what it was um it was it was actually I love watching caros Aras play any match um even the ones where he doesn’t play that well there’s usually there are usually spells that are really just make me smile make me jump off my seat um he was he he achieved today what he was clearly trying to achieve in that medev match at the start when he was trying to Center himself almost jovic like sort of not get too wound up and bouncy and and running off into the distance and coming up with miraculous passing shots he was just trying to dictate and dominate and and he he didn’t have the sights in against Med and he had to go the long way round well he had the sights in today um but at the same time I I felt quite quite sad watching jovic unable to keep up at all like that um now the guy had knee surgery a few weeks ago so I think he was compromised I don’t think he was able to move like like he could a year ago and in a year from now if his knee’s fixed and he hasn’t deteriorated too much with age then he might be able to move again like he did a year ago and it might be a little bit different as a result but at the same time he looked he I was talking the other day about how he gets you off balance and yet that’s what was happening to him he was being unbalanced by Carlos ALR he was con constantly being forced to to change direction quickly and the ball was on him too quickly he just couldn’t handle the pace of the ball that was coming at him or the or the quickness of thought of alcarez but then he hadn’t well of course he hadn’t because he hasn’t been playing people like that he hasn’t even been playing ALR of the rest of the week he’s been you know and this was ALC at his best so what chance have you got it was an Annihilation and it was it was awkward really because I I don’t particularly want to see an absolute alltime great look a little bit embarrassed and for a while there he was looking a bit embarrassed yeah and I think you know I’m sure we’re going to talk a lot more about Carlos alz but just to stay on know about jovic I thought it was interesting that in the press conference just then jovic didn’t mention the knee that much he he he did talk about how it compromised his preparation coming in but he kind of very specifically referenced the first few rounds here at Wimbledon where it was bothering him most and he did say that he was feeling better as the tournament went on now I agree with you David like he didn’t look himself in terms of movement I think particularly to the to the forehand side he was when he was pushed out there he was kind of running and slapping at the ball rather than sliding into it and balancing himself and centering himself like there was there was definitely he didn’t seem himself but what strikes me is that I I just had such throwback to the Australian Open during this match where noat jovic was getting embarrassed for the first two sets and kind of for most of the match against yanic sin as well and that was pre knee injury that’s now two grand Sam losses in a row against his biggest youngest rivals in C and particularly now ALR where jovic has not had the level he’s just not had just not had it in him to match them on on a couple of different surfaces and that to me is a big big shift I said on the on the show earlier was that C match at the Australian Open a oneoff or was it the start of a trend and it feels to me now like noat jokovic just hasn’t been in brilliant form all year pre and post knee surgery I know we’ve had moments at the last two slams where we’ve thought he’s getting there but he’s not come up he’s not come up against this level and that’s that’s the true test and look I didn’t I didn’t see this coming from novat Jo because I thought it would be closer I thought he’d lose but I thought it would be closer but looking back now it feels like maybe this kind of was coming given given the evidence we’ve had this year that is that’s the debate here isn’t it how much was the KN a factor how much was this injury or or compromised physicality versus form for Novak jovic and sounds to me like David you come down more on the side of injury I think I I of course of course having surgery 39 days ago was not nothing today I agree he wasn’t moving with abandon out to his forehand side he was definitely taking steps where he would ordinarily slide for sure however I still think a fully fit novat jokovic would have been losing that match today um and again the the data sample of the C match at the Australian Open I think adds adds weight to that but then I guess on a on a third hand with this debate is does it matter because aging means getting injuries it means being more prone to this stuff and having to have surgeries or be it ones that you bounce back from in extraordinary time frames like this is how age related decline happens right this is how it happened for federa absolutely and and I think we have got to be realistic about that I mean I think it’s extraordinary that jovic got to this point um and that he keeps on competing even near these guys at the very top given everything he’s already done like how do you get the motivation to keep on getting up in the morning and planning your life around this training that you need to do to to make yourself relevant as a absolute top level tennis player I think that that’s an extraordinary achievement in itself um and and I don’t think it’s getting easier I don’t think it’s going to get easier um because this will golden the locker room right it’s the erosion of the locker room Aura he’s going to need to show something soon I think just to jolt everybody again I mean at the moment he’s kind of achieving it by getting to these finals and still having this extraordinary record of having won 24 Grand Slam singles titles so apart from CER and alcra really everybody’s still got a problem with him it’s not like other people are coming out and ending his Grand Slams for him um but that might start happening and and I think if that does then he’ll be he might be in a different head space in the future it’s it’s so fascinating isn’t it Matt the the cner match in Australia this year was undoubtedly one that was in all our minds throughout this match I also had the Australian Open final of 2019 felt very Sim my mind throughout this match you had in that match you had I think pound-for-pound that’s jovic’s greatest ever performance uh he was playing a guy his old rival who had looked great all the way till the final and and been beating people in straight sets and and it felt quite similar to me the Matt and I have had a a slight difference of opinion on which one it felt most like was it the C jovic at the start of the year or was it that one which is one you came up with Catherine and it’s that one for me Pam praised me no it was Simon Briggs wasn’t it that praised me for having a good take and and M DED it D the Flames look it’s a great take there definitely are elements of that like cuz Nadal was was coming into that Australian Open wasn’t he having not played since the US Open before and he he he didn’t have the Reps against the top players in the way that jovic doesn’t have the Reps at the moment against the top players so I I absolutely stand agree that that there’s a definite similarity there and and it just and the feeling you had watching it was just like these two great players coming up against each other and yet one is so superior to the other we were expecting a classic I think or at least Catherine and I were I think we shouldn’t have been expecting a classic at the 2019 Australian Open in in Hinds I think that’s my take here like I suppose maybe we shouldn’t have been today though maybe exact but I think the reason we shouldn’t have been expecting a classic I think in 2019 in the Australian Open was that Nadal had a very specific problem with jovic on hard court going into that he had lost 14 sets in a row against him on a hard cour it been six years since he’d won a set and I think even even the doal playing well wouldn’t have been able to live with that version of novat jovic then can’t argue with numbers was I think today he’s killing me with numbers today and the cinematch it feels less about a specific matchup to me and more about circumstances of career and you’ve got you’ve got a guy in novat jovic who is nearing the end and squeezing every last drop out against two coming forces who have probably the higher peak level right now so that was why the c one came came more to mind for me but I I I do take the point about you know the reasons why it made you think of 2019 the other thing this isn’t a specific match but the other match is it made me think of and this was something you referenced the other day David was Serena Williams for Grand Slam finals after coming back from her maternity leave the Quest for 24 the feeling of well she’ll she’ll definitely get there eventually okay she didn’t get this one but she’ll get the next one and she just never did you know we know there was 24 memorabilia made for Serena Williams the the Grand Slam That Never Was and we know there was a 25 jacket in novat jovic’s bag today y that might never be worn well and I imagine they would probably have a different design won’t they when he if he and when he eventually does do it so for every every slam he’s entering they’re designing a new 25 100% yeah no question if someone out there wants to create a museum of tennis memorabilia that never gets used I would be there in a shot it’s like draft tweets absolutely yeah I I it fascinates me yeah I I I do find it really so interesting to see what jovic does in the in in the the period he has left you know and how long it lasts and I I hope it’s not accelerated by injury and of course that must be a real possibility uh given the age he is right now it may well be just motivation when he starts feeling that he’s just too far away um and and I and I still think it’s very possible that he can make another search and uh be fully fit come into like Australia for instance will be interesting I I think us open’s a big ask really given it’s not that long off and he’s got to do the whole clay shift first and and that sort of thing um but anytime you see the alltime greats wrestling with their sort of tennis mortality I I I’m so drawn to it and yet feel slightly Melancholy about it as well because you know that it’s it’s not got that long left um but it makes them all the more interesting you know yeah and I’m you know despite everything I’ve I’ve just said I feel like I’ve been made down and no that yovic on this podcast like I’m not I’m not giving up on him like I do think as David says it’s very possible he could he could find it again also like I know Carlos alcarez feels really like he’s reliable now you know he’s he’s got he’s got a really good record of getting to the latter stages of of the slams but you know he was very close to defeat to Francis TFO early on in this tournament and if something like that were to happen at a slam in the next year if if alres were to lose early which you know it’s not impossible despite the fact he’s winning 12 in a row like that that might be all no that jovic needs to get one more like he got to the final here okay sinner I think would would would cause a problem as well like he did in Australia but you know if if cner were to say lose to medev and suddenly it’s jovic against medev I’m not I’m not knocking medev he’s a great player as well but I think jovic I don’t think medev has got that Top Gear that alcarez has shown today and I think if he just keeps putting himself in that position he might be able to take advantage of a draw but I guess I am starting to doubt whether he will be able to beat alcarez and sinner at their very best now age age 37 and and the chances are I know I know his rankings really good but like the chances are he might have to beat a couple of them which you know he he he becomes a victim of five in the world see meddev for for the shape of your final stages of Islam to look very very different I mean all you know even three in the world changes things versus two but I think what jovic’s tournament here does demonstrate is that there is a big gap between obviously jovic himself C alcra I’d put medev in there probably put Zev in there but then like players like Fritz and rublev and you know and I don’t mean to pick on those but like the ones who aren’t at the very very top I think there is a bit I think jovic can and you know mo he can beat those guys still yeah but can he beat the very best guys I think there’s a question mark the real loser today is Lorenzo mati right um just finally on the on the jovic element of this match before we move on to to give caros alarz some much needed love um some of the quotes about the nature of the match today were I mean weren’t extraordinary given that you know completely reflected what we all felt like we’ seen but just extraordinary to hear 24 time Grand Slam Champion talk like this about a grand slam final he said it was all about him today he said he was better than me in every single aspect basically said he felt totally powerless out there how many times in his life will no that jovic have felt like that on a tennis court let alone in a grand s final the only other Wimbledon final he lost was in straight sets to Andy Murray but he wasn’t this nothing like this he was thiser maybe Nadal at the French I remember that that um that covid French Open when Nadal came out and absolutely blitzed him in the first set and probably you know sometimes early in his career when he’ to come up against Nadal at the French but like since he’s been again Al’s word superhuman like it’s it’s so rare for novat jovic to feel totally impotent on a tennis court I cannot imagine how discombobulating that must be particularly at Wimbledon too which he has made into his kind of is it is it his best surface I mean I suppose you look at 10 Australian opens and and I so I actually think the closest one is is the sinner one in that in that regard you know he looked bereft for two sets and then found something and I also think that sinner had a bit of what alra had today of like oh my God I’m about to win um and and stopped playing quite so well um but like I say I can’t get over the feeling that it was actually quite embarrassing for him to to win four games in the first two sets you know you saw them at the net together at the start of the match and they’re hyped up and they really such Mutual admiration between them there’s a little pat on the back and they both look so pumped and excited to be there and looking forward to a really close match and then it was nothing like a close match and look Al is a massive part of the reason for that but I I just thought you know here you are on your stage 15,000 people and everybody’s hyped up this match and you can’t get anything going and you and you can’t like your legs are not taking you to the ball and you’re you’re looking a bit disorientated out there do you think you would have liked someone to start booing to I mean for real though like that is fuel still don’t think the was there for it to for it to matter he did look like he was absent he looked like he was flat you know there was there was a moment where I think Marian bti said it in our commentary box she said it’s like he’s observing the match like he’s not on the court like he’s with us watching this imposter struggling to function and um yeah I I when when he played Nadal and reduced Nadal to that player who who was who looked very similar all the way through I kept thinking why why isn’t the down getting pumped up why doesn’t he show you know because you you feel like an idiot you you feel like you can’t nothing’s going right so what’s there to tap into you can’t fake that necessarily I mean he tried I remember in that Davis Cup tie he tried to he picked on one little noise and he was like come on then you know and got them to to go at him but I think he felt embarrassed and um and the only thing that was going to get him back into it and make him feel feel better was to start playing better right you know he got let back in in with the with the choke but even in that set he was already playing better there were there were holes of serves where he would shake his fist and he was like come on it’s coming it’s coming it’s you know but it it was still behind the guy opposite him and and there was one moment in the third set where um jovic was 3-2 up and alquar was serving and jovic did play a really good point and he did encourage the crowd and they did start to go with him but then in the very next Point alarz hit him with like his signature move which is like the drop shot and the lob and he just immediately got the crowd back on his side like the crowd went with him as well it was like the perfect moment for outc to just say hang on a minute like don’t don’t you get any ideas about trying to get the crowd on your side like now after all these years you know sort of sympathy Applause as I’m days ago yeah like I am going to bring out my highlight real shot now and immediately get them back on my side like we won a match but actually that was what a what a drop shot yeah um Vicki spreadbury incidentally lovely Vicki spreadbury we love we love Vicki um in the chat just now has said she would love to hear from Juan Carlos fero as to what percentage of his potential he would now put his charge caros alra at because of course Indian Welles last year uh at which point alra was already a grand slam Champion he went on to win that Indian Wells title he told David after some lering on the lawn that alra was at 60% of his potential and it’s if knew that col um that Juan Carlos ferero was loitering right behind us in in that moment he has now gone so so we can’t ask him right now but we will get David to loer at a later stage if you had to guess what he would say 8 85 um which is 60% 15 months ago was terrifying and 85% now is terrifying I mentioned the other day that I feel like Carla srz is gathering data without an analytics he’s just soaking up experience in real time we are seeing the birth of an all-time great happening in real time and and he is figuring it out with the rest of us it’s one of the earliest I think we’ve ever thought that about a player because no that jovic has got the most grand Stam titles but nobody was saying that about him when he was 21 nobody feder federa people like me were saying you want to see this guy’s talents but at 21 Roger fedra was winning his first in 2003 Nadal was clocking him up on Clay but honestly did anybody really think he was going to do what he did on other surfaces let alone win 14 rolling gar t TI this guy before even winning his first we were all saying this guy’s Talent he’s you know he’s like watching all three of them in one person and then jovic underlines that by saying the same thing last year um so the big thing to me is what happened when he choked and it was one of the most spectacular nerve ridden capitulations I’ve seen on Center Court so let’s just let’s just go through this he’s he is in Tim henman’s words annihilated Novak jovic for three sets he breaks after probably the game of the match actually game yeah that game I know the first game had drama and it was very long 14 minutes I think and it was compelling but I think this game in terms of quality this was jovic’s best game I think um alz finally breaks in this third set he’s 5-4 he’s serving for the match you you just know everyone’s gathered at the side of the Court you know and uh they’re waiting the trophy’s being lined up and he goes 40 love up and it his routine as you like it it it the game is encapsulating the whole day for Carlos alra at this point and then he not only loses serve from that point he loses seven points in a row yep and nine of the next 10 and and okay there were a couple that you could give him a a pass on on cuz novat jovic stepped up and made it difficult for him but basically threw them away didn’t he like you could see how heavy his arm was it it was it was adorable really it was a this guy that’s just been doing this superum stuff for this whole match suddenly looks as hum as can be it was it was superheroes they’re just like us kind of stuff Alejandra davidovic fakin oh my God I can’t play this point yeah he shat himself yeah like and on one of the uh match points I think it was the 4030 one he hits a big serve and jovic hits a return that looks like it’s maybe floating long and while it’s midair there’s a massive scream from someone in in the crowd like a like a yes you know like is this match is over Bas decides to hit the ball and misses it and was it going out I don’t know I’m not confidently enough to not hit it I can understand why he hit it for sure um but he missed and James Kong the Umpire had to make his his announcement of please don’t make any noise during the rallies it to respect both players and like so quickly after that he just made two unforced erors and had lost the game and then jovic holds really quickly and it was the five six game that impressed me the most from alcarez cuz that point he’s lost nine of the last 10 points jovic has you know saved three consecutive match points and you know he’s jovic has won this title before having having saved consecutive match points you know um but Al played a great game at 56 like a really great game just completely kept it together and as soon as he did that I thought well he’s going to win this tie break now because he’d got over it yeah he’d weathered it yeah it was so impressive that five six game and that’s to me why he ends up taking his 85% now even higher because I think he won’t make that mistake again I don’t think I think he’s going to start just serving Grand Slams out with no like he didn’t make this mistake of a slow start today no yeah it it was It was kind of that that thing that you said the other day Katherine he just he just livs for the drama yeah and there hadn’t been any been any he was like would I even enjoy this win if there wasn’t some drama yeah right and there was also the other twist in this mini choke tail was that after that epic game when alcaras finally breaks in the third set jovic barely sat down at the change of ends he he was he was fast serving at the end of that game he whether it was a tactic or whether he was just wanting to get it over with I don’t know but then he he basically doesn’t sit down at that change of ends which was extraordinary and again maybe it was a tactic if it was a tactic it was masterful but um it seemed to me like it was just let’s get the inevitable over with here which was extraordinary to see I thought yeah I actually didn’t notice that there was a there was a guy with a large hat sitting in front of me on C to court and I was having to do a lot of straining Matt had some first world problems today he sat down in his seat on the third third row on Center Court fifth but fth row picture of get VI out for me and there’s a big hat in front of him he was like I’m not impressed with this my seats are going for 10 grand yeah it it was it was pretty extraordinary um he does the Jude Bellingham celebration who are you supporting tonight car God Jude God Jude go on Jude tonight’s theight and uh then he then he does the interview on cour I love how just in the moment he is he really I say this every time but it’s his emotions are so pure aren’t they he’s just enjoying it and I I find that so unrelatable and so magnetic I just I I want 1% of that it’s uh it’s incredible and um he spoke spoke really well in the uh in the presentation he clearly didn’t I thought want to get booed in relation to the football again he was very Keen not to very careful when the football came up um and uh yeah all he said was nice line he said I’ve done my job o over to you Spain I had a good chat with um with a a Spanish journalist here from EF uh the agency in London um on the on BBC Radio and and I asked him what what our cres like to deal with you know for them to report on and honestly he just loves him just say he just says he’s everything you think he is as a as a as a lad you know as a person um and uh and he was actually more quite a lot more confident in alra winning his match than he was in Spain winning their match tonight and and that was a that was a pre-match chat that had that a pre-match chat yeah yeah so uh no surprises for him Manuel could I just um take a moment to applaud Wimbledon on the speed with which they put together their post match postal presentation ceremonies it’s very good it’s very good F free it is f free and I would like to to any Grand Slam organizers watching and listening you don’t need a stage yep that’s how to do it and a draw we don’t yeah they start without faf and they end without faf right yeah you do not need a stage just sitting there in the stadium in Paris they piping in weird sort of lift music while a bunch of sort of Burly 22y olds construct a completely unnecessary stage and everyone’s just sort of sitting there and the poor finalist cameraman zones in in the face of the beaten finalist it is not necess I know people will say oh but looks better for TV you can figure it out I think that looked pretty good for TV I agree out there today you need the moment don’t let the air go out of the stadium we don’t need stages feel very strongly about that if it isn’t obvious um okay we’ve arrived at the the what now the what now chat I guess in the most immediate term we look at the Olympics and that’s can’t wait oh me neither so pumped that is really interesting from a Carlos Al’s perspective because you know he’s going to be playing the doubles Rafa Nadal like that is going to be such a big deal I think thead doll’s going to ditch Casper R get alcaraz in like that that almost feels bigger than the singles good SW kaspars are good um do you think so David needs him to win the singles for the for 12 in a row no it doesn’t count it’s just a bonus it’s just an icing on the cake um and also Marco were reporting that if he wins it Marco were reporting that Juan Carlos ferero is not going to be there at the start I think he’s going to go out for the for the later rounds but you know because they’re kind of a team I a like you’re there obviously you you’re playing the tennis as an individual but you’re also representing your team and I think David ferer is like the the captain of the Spanish tennis team so he’s going to be there I think Al’s agent is going to be there with him but I don’t think Ferrero is going to be there from the start and look maybe Al can get through those first few rounds without Ferrera but I’m quite a big believer in that partnership and how important it is for just almost calming Al back to the Australian he hasn’t lost a grand slam match since the Australian Open and that was a a different Carlos alz not when things were going well when things are going well he’s fine without one caros fero it’s when things aren’t going and that’s what these two slams have been defined by he hasn’t always had his best tennis and he has worked it out I think he’ll eventually he’ll be all right with one color I is the next stage of his Evolution it’s part of the 15% hey imagine if he drew Rafal Nal in the first round of the Olympics oh no no I don’t accept that no redo the draw you saying that as if it might redo the draw you saying that as if that might be a good thing that’ be interesting wouldn’t it telling me you wouldn’t tune in for that I’m going to tune in for all of it anyway yeah AR I it’s I mean Catherine basically just watches Olympics 247 for how many weeks is it two three weekends two weeks right yeah Katherine whitet is unavailable yeah also going to be commentating on some gymnastics which could be fun um and trampolining trampoline I’m tuning into that what’ you do just bounce up and down don’t remember he’s tuning into that what about the Olympics of jovic can’t wait he’s fascinating desperate for it oh what a big ask though yeah and he mentioned he mentioned in his press conference you know going back to the place where he got injured you know I think it might be slightly in his head interesting you know um cuz he was very unhappy with what they did to the courts like he he thinks that he was he got injured because of kind of how they well think an injury was aggravated he was carrying a tweak wasn’t he he certainly thinks it it contributed to what ended up happening to him so I think there is a bit of residual feeling there um it it feels feels too soon for me like yeah that’s what it feels like to you know like I mean I even if he hadn’t heard his knee I think it’s a big ask for him to be going clay Grass Grass clay clay hardcore I mean with a knee a knee problem I mean look again wouldn’t write him off but I think I’d write him off now for for winning the gold really yeah the only thing is like weird things do sometimes happen at the Olympics they do I I would be massively surprised if he won the Olympics now I would be surprised I’d be surprised does that mean he’s not in the mix wow question for he’s in my mix he’s in the mix still hang on you I I would write him off he’s in the mix I think other people okay he’s not in the mix the the only the only thing that gives me pause for thought in a way is the fact that zev’s injured too because I think Z is another guy who could have taken him out ony is that he’s okay he’s playing Hamburg right okay no I don’t think joish is in the mix for the Olympics how big’s the Olympic mix men’s probably mix of one in the women’s isn’t it three alar sinner Zev who put rude in I’m putting Casper Roode in my Olympics mix maybe five because you got to make room for Nadal hang on nalovic but not jovic it’s Rafal Nadal it’s noos the guy’s won it 14 times and he’s gone to bad to practice you think being bad right now is a positive for yes massive POS I do as well actually getting some yeah hang on a second help help me here Matt that’s luny right I’ve just said I’d be surprised if jovic won Olympic gold but someone said on the chat David is daving very hard I’m just saying no he has to be in the mix jovic is in the mix Nadal it’s like it’s like when when you were all saying medev was in the mix and I said no he’s not then he lost in the first round but you can lose in the first round having been in the mix yeah yeah but he wasn’t he wasn’t in mine anyway okay so I’m going both Al sin Zev rude jovic Nadal quite a big mix that’s quite fun you’re putting Nadal in the mix yeah cool as well as you said clay like Nadal pushed Z but rolong garos okay not he didn’t okay lost in straight sets but two of those sets were very close and it was bad conditions for Nadal and he’s going to have had a warm-up tournament here yeah I look he’s Nadal so he kind of automatically goes the what about Nadal an’s in the doubles oh they’re in the mix for that yeah sure I haven’t quite got my head around all the all the Hollywood doubles pairings that we’re going to have at the Olympics yeah me too me too um incidentally um and if anybody saw Andy Murray’s Instagram story today I mean don’t if you’re squeamish but it makes me think that maybe the Olympics might not happen for him speaking of double sparing is not NE necessarily ones that would be in the mix but um yeah that’s a pretty bleak note to be ending mumon on but um an alcaras Nadal gold is that a prediction I’ll have a look at the drawer first but we don’t even know who’s in the dra I’m certainly not writing them off um some people are asking about our plans for the Olympics um I’d love to be able to answer you in detail because we were supposed to have a planning meeting about that during this fortnite but we are yet to learn that planning anything during a grand slam is obviously an impossibility um we’re not doing dailies but we will be doing more than weeklys yes yes that’s confirmed right yeah absolutely watch this space we will be trust me on my watch we will not be neglecting the Olympics he will it will get the love it deserves um and we’re having our meeting tomorrow are we I’m putting it out there post golf Golf and then meeting what time what’s tea time tomorrow uh 7 748 Katherine’s coming not playing but coming I’m coming to drive the buggy I cannot resist resist a golf buggy no gets you setting an alarm I mean we’ll still see if she gets there in um a few other results from today we put it out on the live a few some order please a few other results from today to discuss a very important one which we did talk about in our preview show earlier on today um because it was first match of the day on court number one so it finished while we were on air Alfie huitt has completed the career Grand Slam in singles today he beat Martin delapuente 62 63 I know that sounds like a a relatively straightforward score line but um he was twice a breakup in that second set and got broken back um and he must his heart must have been pounding eventually got over the line 63 incredible scenes and sounds on court number one this is three consecutive years he’s reached the singles final here and been unable to get over the line most famously two years ago he served for the match four times and was unable to close out it it’s a wonderful story I was hoping to be able to go to alfha ht’s press conference actually but of course he didn’t come to press after that win because he went out again to play in the men’s wheelchair doubles final and won that too alongside Gordon Reed they beat toito Oda and tuya uh tuya Miki 6476 what a day for Alfie H I’m so happy for him yeah me too um I’ve said it a few times love interviewing him he’s always such a gent and he’s he’s so good at giving you an insight into what he’s feeling and going through as a player and how much it means to him um and jez this was this felt really up in the air after the last couple of years can you stomach that disappointment and being that close not getting there and and getting over the line and with the way um too odor has come on in in the last year or two and being so young problem for he’s like beaten him comfortably a couple of times I mean that there really was the question mark are you ever going to be able to do this and you could feel that in that final game I mean comfortable lead as you say but upon Match Point upon actually getting the moment of Victory I don’t think you could see a more pure combination of joy and relief it was Andy mesque really from 2013 and uh very very happy for him and richly deserved yeah here here absolutely one of the stories of the fortnite without doubt uh we had the women’s doubles final taking place last night we were actually here for all of it somehow after the sort of earliest finish in terms of singles play at the tournament we ended up here later than any other day last night we were sat in the media restaurant at midnight and the rest I think yeah and the rest yeah good times doing King of the naughties doing King of the naughties and I I have footage from those no scenes folks so do uh do head over to our Instagram Matthews just stood up he stood to attention but like the first time for all two weeks he’s got himself a chair for this show but he’s just stood up worried about that footage I think because David David behaved very respectfully and yes you know very respectful whereas Matthew kind of disgraced himself I would say he did a jog around the Pizza Kitchen yeah after achieving a draw yeah a draw that a a uh a tie that will be broken tonight by the way King has to be crowned the thing is I haven’t thought of another question no no leave it with me a king must be crowned I I I can you I liked the draw in the moment if you’re here live please back me up in the chat here a king must be crowned no no Matthew the last the last Olympics no one can hear you Matthew you can hear me the last Olympic they did the Italian and the Qatari M for anybody that can’t hear matth is is citing the Olympic high jump final uh in in Tokyo which faires they did agree to share the gold medal um I think I think David’s happy because like it’s like the Ryder Cup or the solheim cup like David won it last year so retained so you’ve retained it like Matthew needs to Wi 9s this is naughties yeah but it’s still like he he’s undefeated I’m the people’s Champion Matthew if you want to have your say uh right of reply you have to come in front of the camera and answered the demands of the people um I was trying to talk about the women’s double sorry I derailed things one by Taylor towns end and Karina cinear Taylor towns end is just a joy to watch no matter what kind of tennis court she is on I love watching her has to be said that Katarina sakova does seem to be the common denominator in double isn’t she absolutely incredible yeah I mean if you think that Coco cof had never won one before go Sor but you know she seems better with her she makes me feel like I could be her partner and you know it would be all right yeah but I mean you actually both coko goof and Taylor Townson serious doubles players in their own right actually and just seeing the last two grand slam tournaments their celebrations what it meant to Taylor Townson yesterday oh it was wonderful especially look I’m not saying Taylor towns end is going to necessarily do what C chov has done but in the context of bb or CH yesterday who is a doubles player filed away as a doubles player for so long struggling as you’ve told us the other day David to get into singles draws that must be pretty inspiring for those kind of players yeah it should be shouldn’t it and especially given Taylor Townson is clearly a very good singles player and I just think that winning big in doubles like that just makes your career that much more viable you know suddenly you’re getting yourself a really good income stream and everything but it also makes it tougher in singles in other ways because if you’re going deep in an event in doubles you can’t play qualifying yeah for events because they take place the the week before like you’re kind of stuck in a a bit of a nether Zone like I remember Max pel talking about that didn’t he like having to sacrifice a bit of his double success in order to really give the singles ago which has gone pretty well for him but it’s a it’s a tough choice but I’m I’m thrilled for for cine ARA and for for Taylor Town’s end as well um we had the men’s quad wheelchair singles that was won by second seed Neil Vin um he beat his doubles partner Sam schroer 7664 um I think you’d call that an upset actually second seed beating um Sam Sam schroer the top seed um the women’s wheelchair doubles Was Won by the top seeds Yi kamiji and gtho Monti they beat Isco Griffin and dut last time this tournament I’ll be saying that uh 64 64 in the final today um Mont was the first black South African ever to compete at Wimbledon in 2018 I can’t believe it took until 2018 for that to be the case but um it’s their third major doubles title together and their Maiden Wimbledon title together as a team they lost in the final last year so this incredibly emotional from for them and just like Carlos alcra will’ll be going to Australia seeking the career slam as a team I love it when people are seeking a career slam I love it uh we had the boys and girls finals today some names to watch out for in the future the boys Was Won by second seed and I can’t wait to look back on our pronunciations of this when they’re when they’re famous and world number ones uh I’m going to give it a go though Nikolai bukov k k k k k from Norway Kier I think a football though isn’t there Kier oh thank you very much beat me rering 6363 the winner from Norway Rock ring from the Netherlands and the girl singles Was Won by ranata Jam rova the top seed she beat Emon Jones uh the third seed from Australia 63 64 didn’t drop us at all tournament jamova she’s a name that I’ve been seeing a lot for a long time uh in juniors she’s 17 years old and I suspect she’ll be making that transition to the pros pretty promptly so look out for her and for Nikolai bov yeah and we just and we’ve just had the mix doubles result is the result in yeah a live news yeah a 6462 win for Shay and zilinski over Gonzalez andos Mexicans no on Gonzalez an OS at all but how can you not celebrate a shay win absolutely joyous yeah well done to them sh and zalinsky our final champions of Wimbledon 2024 I quite like the mixed doubles being the last event of the tournament I do too it’s happened by accident this time used to be they moved it to Thursday I’d move it back same I like it and maybe maybe they will after this yeah I think it I think it slightly depends on you know if if there’s a really epic men’s final that goes five hours or so like then it very much feel been problematic you know that’s a fair point but like in that scenario today kind of perfect that they that they got that extra match on on Center and before the football yes absolutely don’t mention the football um we have some big news to end on folks in fact we have quite a few bits of business to end on here um we have thank yous we have shout outs we have an attempt to pull at your heartstrings coming up uh but before all of that some of you uh watching and listening um were kind enough to come and see us at a live show that we did in London during Queens in the buildup to Wimbledon um it was a very overwhelming experience for us um our first we we’ve done Lo live shows before prior to the pandemic um but nothing nothing quite like this uh and it was it was very very special and um I know lots of you that came seemed to have a very nice time I want to speak on your behalf but that was the impression that you gave um and it gave us enough confidence that uh we are going to be doing a live show in New York folks we’re playing Off Broadway dreams are coming true today folks on Thursday the 22nd of August we will be doing a live show at the green space in SoHo Manhattan um check us out check us out um T limited tickets are available for the event we didn’t want to get too big for our boots um for that reason we’ll be live streaming this event as well um those online tickets will be priced at $10 $5 for friends of the tennis podcast friends will also get Priority Access to in-person tickets um there’ll be a bar bespoke merch available as a souvenir from the evening and um we’ll be in the bar after us as well so if it’s any kind of enticement and it’s okay that it’s that it’s not um you can have the chance to hang out with us for a drink afterwards as well maybe even a special guest or two TBC uh we have some incredible sponsors for this event I would like to shout out uh Greg Weston Hall who we just call nice Greg we love Greg we love Greg Legend great Greg he’s always been a a tremendous supporter of the podcast and uh he was guest editor of the Jimmy Connor tennis relived episode that we did a couple of years ago prior to the US Open and that is and I think will always be one of my very favorite editions of tennis relived and uh that was largely due to Greg’s incredible contribution so thank you Greg nice Greg um and also thank you to AO travel who will be uh supporting the event in New York um AO traveling experiences have curated packages that include luxury accommodation handpicked dining and entertainment plus Prime seats for worldclass tennis the team at AO travel and experiences takes care of every detail and we will be proud to have them supporting us at the US Open um tickets will be going sale on uh on sale this week there will be uh Priority Access for friends of the tennis podcast if you want to become a friend the link to do that is in our show notes and details for tickets will be in the newsletter so do subscribe to that off Broadway debut it’s very exciting scary that was a that was a muted Round of Applause from cameraman Matthew it’s cuz we haven’t booked him isn’t it we didn’t know if you were going to be in New York Matthew and and that’s um that’s US Open draw day it is which you know as as people know Grand Sam draw day a great day anyway so hang out with us in the evening absolutely yeah get our our hot soon to be cold takes on the US Open draw uh as I said if you want to become a friend of the tennis podcast the link to do that is in our show notes and there are lots of reasons to do it not least the fact that if you’re worried about post Wimbledon Blues which I am quite frankly we’ll be recording our Wimbledon review show Tuesday probably wouldn’t want to interfere with the golf tomorrow um Tuesday maybe Wednesday certainly in the next uh two or three days and we will have voice note contributions from some of our favorite people in the sport to get their perspective um on the Wimbledon that we’ve just seen and we always have different takes don’t we a couple of with the benefit of just a couple of days consideration and viewing the the tournament as a whole um we love those shows and uh we think friends love them too so that’ll be available for you very soon we’ll have our Q&A show for July our live Q&A show on YouTube especially for friends of the tennis podcast and we’ll also have our next edition of tennis relived can I reveal who that’s about yet um no mat puts the kaios on it well it’s not about a specific person so I’m worried that you might that you might reveal the wrong [Laughter] thing yes I was at risk of doing that you’ve you’ve read me correctly but can I reveal the right thing now that you’ve guided me in that direction maybe you should do it just say our next edition of tennis reled will be our US Open edition of tennis relived which is going to be all about Super Saturday and uh in particular the very famous Super Saturday that there was 40 years ago uh and generally that concept of you know both you know of of all the big matches being on being on the same day the men’s semi-finals and the and the women’s final which is on on reflection Bonkers yeah right so we want to want time too yeah so we want to dig into that and and talk about that and how it’s changed and you know specifically talk about the one from uh 84 that was Matt futan giving us away by the way the the oft mentioned on the tennis podcast Matt fan um yes we’re very excited about that Edition ofn relived and if it isn’t obvious our addition after that one of tennis relived is also very much in the works David has been loitering up a storm for several months now and uh both those additions are going to be extremely special so the link is in our show notes we have some thank yous folks some very very important thank yous on this our final edition of the tennis podcast live from wialon for 2024 uh we need to thank Wimbledon for accommodating us for giving us this incredible spot for treating us so well we it is a a real privilege and a joy for us to partner with Wimbledon uh in the way that we do and we’re we’re very very grateful for it and enables us to to bring you what we think is kind of the best possible coverage that we can do of a Grand Slam Tournament and it’s it’s such a thrill yeah it it is I mean they they trust us to to get on with it the job and do and be us and that’s all all we want we just want to be us in in an amazing location and that’s what they what they enable um and it’s been it’s been just brilliant I mean and it’s not raining on the final show of all things there’s not a cloud in the sky it’s extraordinary yeah um and On a related note we must Thank The Wimbledon shop for yeah providing me with my wardrobe for the next 12 months quite frankly we’ve never looked this good um yeah they’ve been tremendously supportive it is genuinely been our pleasure to wear their stuff it is and we met it is lovely and now forever more David and I are going to have to check that we’re not wearing the same shirt when we meet up and Matt as well that’s a weird thing um yes the custody of Jude has been brought up and discussed think it’s already been claimed yes I was always going to suggest that Jude needs to stay with you Matt there have been calls for Jude to live on the shelves that feature as the backdrop for our our live shows well all our shows frankly very good idea I was going to suggest a relay but no if you’d like me to have Jude I will have Jude I think I would like you to have Jude it would be like wrenching a a newborn from its mother on the basis of this pending performance tonight no we have fa Jude will be in the bin yeah um okay well that’s that decided then uh onwards with our thank yous cameraman Matthew Legend there’s still a crowd member here stuck around to applaud cameraman Matthew Cara made us uh friendship bracelets and that’s just the most amazing thing mine says Arta Fe mine says the barge and Matthew says Matt Matt says the backand list yeah uh no I’ve got camera man Matthew on the brain because despite the fact that he manages to to insult me pretty much every time he opens his mouth I still absolutely love him he is Talent a special talent yeah his his energy is alcaras esque isn’t it you just even if he’s talking absolute WAFF you just want to be in his presence yeah he makes every day better he makes every day better it is honestly quite a skill I saw I saw him accidentally insult a lovely man to his face earlier and just totally get away with it it was extraordinary what what a skill to have and he’s a a heck of a cameraman and editor um and flaw manager and producer as well and we also experienced life without camera Matthew and it was a tough te it was a tough day let me tell you how did we get on a yeah it was a tough day yeah AI is not coming for your job anytime soon Matthew uh we would like to thank gorer our designer uh without him everything would look crap um yeah working at all hours of the night to make things look excellent and uh we’re very grateful for it indeed oh my goodness closing in around 15 minutes please make your way to the exit gates and make sure you take all your belongings with you we hope you’ve enjoyed your day here at wimon and wish you a pleasant and safe journey home thankk you even that got a round of applause good crowd tonight isn’t it wow where was I thank you gar our next thank you is to Hannah I don’t even know what to describe Hannah as quite frankly she is our writer she is the captain of the barge she is a truly wonderful person and special talent who I I cannot believe we get to work with her quite honestly I really every time I read her work I’m like why aren’t like editors of national and international Publications calling her up and saying we have to have you but I’m GL I’m glad they’re not cuz she’s ours and yeah yeah thank you very lucky thank you Hannah thank you to everyone that’s been on the barge and keeping it rocking we love being on the barge we love checking in it’s an absolute Joy that’s another the benefit of being friends of the Pod podcast and thank you to all of our friends of the podcast that keep this show on the road year round thank you to our pod logger woly she does she does plenty else besides does w woly but I do like the the name pod logger it’s very good yeah she does the um she does the artistic the Doodles she calls them Doodles but they’re they’re Doodles they are better than anything I ever greatest three years of art class yeah yeah when I was sort of weekly asked to go and see Mr Glee the teacher for lack of lack of Engagement I’ve got no Talent what can you do um thank you to Pam dver for being a guest and for being a great Vibe as well thanks for being our friend Pam uh we love you uh thank you to everybody that has been in the crowd for these for these live shows honestly some of you have stuck around in the most extraordinary conditions to um make the crowd sound bigger than it actually is with the use of bins and uh we’re we’re so grateful for that it’s such a Vibe and you’re all so invariably lovely when we come over to chat to you and that is simply wonderful um on which note I would like to attempt to tug your heartstrings just a little bit because the the affer mentioned excellent cameraman Matthew has prepared the tennis podcast live from rimbledon 2024 the best bits okay 1 minute 13 oh my God it’s so [Music] exciting a lovely bear from The Wimbledon shop we’ve just named him Jude a half an hour ago he was called you bunch of useless idiots but now he’s called Jude because England have just won the football and this is our crowd you thought last night’s crowd with try hards we actually have a crowd over there in the distance they can’t even see us recording rain be damned we are going to have a good night do you see what I did there Matt wants to sit in the rain folks no CU it wasn’t raining Catherine a mat are currently crowding underneath an umbrella while I brave it in the the throwing down rain so I know I’m I’ve got the wimbl and tie on but you guys have got some Nice Kicks here I like that it’s good is it Tim hemond is standing over there undercover uh laughing at us yeah it’s great come on [Laughter] Tim oh a pigeon a pigeon just nearly got me I go to the tennis podcast Pam the pigeon I just felt the feathers on my head runer of unexpectedly being in the Andy Murray God God of Honor F that God of Honor generally was amazing wasn’t it it was a like oh there’s Huna um alongside Leon huitt and there was novat jovic and there was John macko and Martin a over and Keta Martinez um but yeah that is an interesting match ahead yeah you either needed to be British or a grand Sam Champion or hul Guna speaking of which someone on the live chat live chat has just said what is a Jude Bellingham Hann Hannah it’s over to you to explain that Putin SA okay so you’ve got to look away then yeah Putin sa so she she didn’t she did the driveby yeah like right yeah Maverick our Wimbledon mascot thank you Maverick and thank you Carol for the presence of Maverick we’re uh we’re very grateful for that thank you to our mascots that we have year round that we let former CEO of the WTA and now tournament director at the US Open yeah good shout and Stacy has been lucky enough to attend the Dallas open Indian Welles and the WTA finals should be able to get to a 500 tournament now that Dallas has been upgraded so just to complete the set she needs a grand slam and an ATP finals you can do it Stacy uh Pam is calling us Pam we’re still on air group voice get back in the chat get back in the chat Pam oh she hung up okay um butt dial anything I don’t know um thank you Stacy Stacy Meadows it’s bit a tennis hob Dallas isn’t it yeah Meadows I thought there might have been a tennis Meadows but I realize now that I’m actually thinking of Jenny Meadows the middle distance Runner getting in Olympics get I’m Olympics on the brain quite frankly uh thank you Stacy uh We’ve also got trip Johnson from Nashville Tennessee had to be from America because that name doesn’t exist in boring Britain trip says this is my third shout out the last two times Katherine has said trip is only a name you find in America will she go three for three or will the street be broken we have we’ve officially run out of material apparently it’s time to get off a you know I think I think there is a there is a Johnson who um I think although it might be jonsson who who Goran I Ivanovich played in the first round of Wimbledon in 2001 and I know this because I was informing him about how well I’d done in that question in King of the naughties and reeling off his run to the title with Rodi redy moer saffin uh Henman and rafter and I said who did you f in the first round and he goes jonsson so maybe not the same um anyway also Steve Johnson Steve Johnson and there was a Donald Don Johnson who was part of a doubles team when I first joined the ATP there you go I feel like I just got booby trapped and I fell for it which is absolutely on me for for having such limited material apparently oh hey thanks trip thank you trip I’m so sorry same time next year yeah yeah and finally we have Jeff Denny and Jeff doesn’t know he’s getting a shout out because it’s a gift from John Gibson Jeff is in Washington DC John is in Maryland which is p shria country isn’t it um and Jeff and John met more than 30 years ago when they were speech writers to US Secretary of Defense Bill Perry wow political speech writers is one of my like fascina uh careers that is interesting yeah there’s a what a cool friend yeah anything else no I mean that’s that’s that’s that’s quite a lot isn’t it that’s I love it I love it when people surprise other people Jeff with a j or a g Jeff with a J Jeff Tango Tango yes any others no JJ wolf is a is a isn’t he a John Jeffrey yes yeah I feel like Jeff isn’t going to be thrilled with JJ wolf and JJ Carter who’s who who coined the movement oh although I have no idea if Jeff was part of the name Jeff thank you Jeff trip and Stacy Stacy Meadows like flashing Meadows very of course that’s better than random Jenny Meadows isn’t it um thank you folks uh I have nothing else on my agenda I have no choice but to wrap this up other than to tell you one more time or ask you one more time politely to like And subscribe if you’re enjoying what 1. Thank you for some honesty. We have been told the knee was fine—was it a serious injury or not? We were told he had a respectable draw and it was amazing he was in another final—by you all. Not so much. This performance by Novak was truly poor. Carlos was very sharp. I will be glad to see the hype machine toned down. The only player who has won 20+ majors against top competitors, while carrying constant injuries and missing years of majors, is Rafael Nadal.

  2. Yes David, totally agree it was sad seeing an all time great not being able to make it a closer match. He did say he wasnt at the top level right now. I think he can though.

  3. Thank you Catherine, Matt and David for the last two and a half weeks of coverage. Looking forward to many more 💜💚

  4. I'm getting tired of hearing people say that Carlos has not been playing his best tennis. How do you define best tennis… straight sets and any win that requires more is not best? I contend that this is nonsense. The goal is to win and if 4 or 5 sets (GS only) is needed so be it. Carlos has managed to win 2 GS in a row without the "best tennis". I guess if straight sets defines best then we saw best tennis today. Even in a straight sets win Carlos was criticised for not converting 3 match points. How tedious.

  5. Novak is cooked. The aura is gone. First, the body stops working like it used to, and then the younger players start winning. Maybe Novak has one more turn back the clock performance that coincides with some luck, but his days of being the top guy are over. This is all normal and how it should be, and it changes nothing about all the amazing things he's done in his career.

  6. It’s been wonderful to look forward to sharing an hour with you every evening over the last few weeks. I shall feel lost without your hilarious and incisive analysis. I started listening and became a Friend exactly a year ago and what a joy it’s been. Keep going!

  7. I for the first time have closely tracked and watched a grand slam and you three have been a huge part of it. Thank you for the two weeks of coverage! Looking forward to US Open 🎾💚

  8. dude. djoko playing like today would beat anyone but Alcaraz. the problem not was djoko bad. the problem was alcaraz too good. he is not finished at all, but carlos is just starting

  9. Would like to thank you guys for the last 2 weeks. Great podcast each day. Great analysis. Now looking forward to the US Open.😀

  10. What is the pinkish liquid David has had in his water bottle for these recordings? I have enjoyed the daily recaps immensely ❤

  11. Thank you for the very enjoyable 2 weeks of Wimbledon coverage. This is my second year with you and I am already looking forward to the next. Thank you!

  12. No excuses for Chocovik. He was moving fine for all his other matches, even had a walkover…he simply was outplayed and couldn’t keep up!

  13. I must add my comments here too about how much I enjoyed this podcast every day. You must all have been very tired after quite long days on site but each program started with Catherine's ever enthusiastic intro and on you went from there. Loved the combination of humor and insightful commentary all given with such joy. You all always looked like you were having a very good time which makes it that much more enjoyable. As an American, I must also say how much I appreciated hearing proper diction and a smooth delivery of the English language. I listen to another podcast regularly (which shall not be named) by a former well known tour player and another well known tennis writer. While the content is also insightful, the tennis writer unfortunately cannot speak the language as well as he writes it. Scarcely does a sentence start without either a loud "AH" or "UM." I am guilty of this in my own speech I'm afraid. So to hear Catherine, David and Matt smoothly delivery content without that verbiage is just beautiful to hear. Then, the former tour player also makes many excellent comments based on his playing experience however he is prone to letting loose F-bombs which he has stated he is proud to do. Sort of an American thing I suppose but unnecessary in my opinion. Once again Catherine, David and Matt show that one can be equally as entertaining and descriptive without resorting to that kind of language. Thank you, thank you.. I'm a big fan and will continue to listen as each episode brings me much laughter and joy. Enjoy a break, you've earned it.

  14. Pods are always great but there’s something even more captivating being able to see you guys. Thanks for a great slam 👏

  15. Is Alcaraz opening up a bit of a gap between himself and Sinner? He leads four slams to one now. I know Sinner is the current world number one but just more broadly speaking Alcaraz seems on a higher level and is getting more of the big wins. I’m interested to see what happens in the hard court season now.

  16. After an Erasmus semester in Oslo i'm pretty sure Nikolai Budkov Kjær's last name is pronounced something like "Share"

  17. Yet again just like last year I am worried for the future of men’s tennis. Alcaraz winning everything would be BORING and make the sport uninteresting. We need a Nadal to Alcaraz’s Federer, some would say we already have that in Sinner but I am not convinced.

  18. Novak back on clay is not a good news. Why? because he can't move as good as it gets to win clay tournament. Nadal will have the shots, but will he have the movement?

  19. the only thing that is in favor for Novak and Rafa in Olympics is that it is best of 3. that might be a factor. do I think it will be? not really.

  20. Thanks so much Catherine Matt and David for all your pods. You make our Wimbledon watch so much more enjoyable. We really all are appreciative . Thank you xx
