coming out of college and just crushing it no one knows the World of Sports like Matt Derry does and he joins us right now on the chgo Bears podcast Matt how are you how are you planning for the Lions you know disappointing this year and the bears taking the North and Caleb being the best quarterback in the land are you bracing yourself for all of that shots fired yes K kmen Nick I I 100% am we talked off air before we started I don’t even think there’s rumors and I have my Lions schedule here I know when the the Lions go to Chicago on the 22nd of December uh there’s rumors the Lions aren’t even going to go they’re just going to Forfeit and they’re G to just give the win because there’s no reason to show up because they can’t stop Caleb Williams by that point but uh no in all seriousness is this is a positive in that the division is getting better and there’s not these automatic wins not that to be honest the last two years the Lions had some automatic dubs against Justin fields for some reason as I dubbed him Hall of fields uh now uh running that backyard offense in Pittsburgh but uh hey it’s exciting for Bears fans and you guys should be excited it’s going to be interesting to see where they land Chicago by the end of the year I mean to be completely honest when even in like the Bears chat that we have here everyone’s looking up to the Detroit Lions at this point so do you think the Lions I I guess what are your expectations for this season obviously NFC Championship game a season ago but just in terms of what this roster has what are your expectations is this the year is this it well you know it’s interesting there some people are using the term here in Detroit Super Bowl or bust I’m not ready to go that far Nick W with your question I I think this team can get back to the NFC championship game and then let’s see how it plays out remember in that game last year the lions were you know at a 20-point lead going into the half things were looking good 23-point lead and and things were great and to be quite honest the second half they got exposed a little bit with poor cornerback play they started the NFC championship game with Cam Sutton on one side and Kindle vildor on the other you guys know vildor so now it’s like you got terion Arnold you got Carlton Davis you got Andis rraw you got a Meek Robertson they’ve added so many corners to the mix that they’re going to be better there and they’ve added DJ Raider at the D on the D line they needed another interior defensive lineman everybody’s back from the offense um so I I feel good about where they’re going to be question’s going to be a tougher schedule a a bullseye now really on their backs going from three wins to 9 to 12 plus adding the two playoff wins uh how will they handle that I I still think it’s a 10-11 win football team though so are you a Dan Campbell guy yeah who who isn’t I mean I think that now we’re at the point I think the people that still bash him say he was lack aasal in his decision making in that second half of the NFC Championship Game why is he always going forward on fourth down take the 47 yard field goal take the points and he didn’t do that um but what he’s done for the culture here I know it’s cliche but it’s true the fact that uh you know you got National people rallying around them no one’s making fun of him anymore for saying they’re biting kneecaps the guy can coach he’s a really good coach and I’ve never seen a locker room like this and you know I was around the Pistons when they won the championship Mark and when we saw each other at the palace numerous times you know Larry Brown uh uh Flip Saunders Rick Carlile all good coaches but there was always what’s going on in the corner over here with this guy or or or that guy in the in locker rooms good clubhouses Jim Leland running the Tigers had an excellent Clubhouse but there was maybe one or two guys you weren’t sure about everybody is on a string in that locker room in Allen Park Michigan and it’s because of Dan Campbell and no one wants to disappoint him they’re playing for him and um he’s got the best offensive coordinator in football and a pretty darn good d-coordinator too on that level were you surprised that he stayed had opportunities in theory at least I was you know I had been told by a couple of people way before the process like December that Ben Johnson was pegged to go to Washington it was going to happen they had new leadership there he fit with what the commanders were looking for they were going to draft a quarterback obviously and they did with Jaden Daniels and he was going to be the the guy to take him to the next level and just didn’t work out and I think Ben Johnson I’ll throw out another cliche unfinished business really does matter to him he wants to win a Super Bowl in Detroit and I also think he’s also looking for a pretty big bag when it comes to getting a head coaching job and it’s got to be the right fit for him so for now uh he’s here and like I said I yeah I’d say I’d be a little bit surprised I’d be shocked if next year we’re having the same discussion Matt when you look at this Lions team obviously they have a bunch of Playmakers on both Sid of the football but what are the concerns with this team as you they’re entering the 2024 season um you know what Nick I I would say number one again complacency I mean last year was such a roller coaster ride 12 wins and you add the two playoff wins both at home kind of got lucky playing the Rams and Stafford coming back the crowd was so fired up for that and then week you know in the IND divisional round getting a Tampa Bay team in round two it’s like that’s who you’re getting great we’ll take it because Dallas of course got eliminated so uh that number one number two I would say the opposite edge of Aiden Hutchinson I mean Hutchinson reer Al mcneel along that front’s going to be great who’s going to be that other Edge rusher on the other side that’s gonna have to wreak some havoc and get to the quarterback they think it’s GNA be Marcus Davenport whom they picked up in free agency it’s not a lot of depth there James Houston they like uh you know Josh Pascal’s back they’ve added some others but keep an eye on that I I still I’m concerned sometimes with a lack of pass rush but every team wants to have you know that guy look the Bears got montz sweat that would have been a great pickup for the Lions and that was too much draft capital for Brad Holmes to cough up not so much for your guy Chef poles there but I think uh I think the the secondary is GNA be much better I like the Lineback and crew and and the kicking situation is a little bit of a question mark right now too so you don’t mention the quarterback Matt I mean where do you do you think that the Lions have the best QB in the division would you say that yeah I would right now I mean Jordan love obviously if he takes the next step with the way he can also run a little bit uh can be special I’m not sure I would ever say Jared G is going to be special but let’s look at the last two years look at the numbers look at the winning look at the accuracy and yeah he’s got a pro bowl receiver I’m and Rain brown but it’s not like on the other side he he’s got Calvin Johnson’s still there he doesn’t uh now you you you subtract Josh Reynolds they like some of the guys the young guys they have but this is a big year for Jameson Williams um to step up but the the the the relatability the GF has with his tight ends with Sam leapa uh the way he runs that offense yeah I I would say he is right now but of course Jordan love can get there of course Caleb Williams maybe end up being special I mean you spent the first pick overall on him but um we’ll see but I think right now Jared gof yes you mentioned Jameson Williams what I guess what is the expectations for a guy that was a former number 12 overall pick obviously you have am man Ross St Brown over there Sam laor some of the weapons there but for a guy like Jameson Williams what is this year mean to him in 2024 I’m not saying Nick that this is it but like it’s close I mean this is year three you said it he’s a first round pick they made a trade to get him a couple of years ago he’s had the suspension for the gambling thing he’s been hurt uh he it took him a second to pick up the Playbook um there were games last year were found him deep for some shots down the field he couldn’t locate the football one game in Baltimore ball him right in the face mask it was a touchdown uh then there’s other games like the NFC Championship Game you hit him on a little reverse he takes it to the house and runs by everybody that’s a good San Francisco defense so you see some things you like other times you worry um now there’s got to be that consistency he’s definitely going to be on the field more than he’s ever been because like I said Reynolds is gone khif Raymond’s coming back from an injury and they’re not sure they number four receiver right now between peoples Jones and Antoine green so um J Mo’s got to do it it’s time and I also think he could be a huge weapon in the kick return game now that the kick return is is back uh in the NFL so we and we’ve debated on on the show here Matt like who’s better Aman ra DJ Moore I’m actually giv me the edge to Aman ra I think that’s fair considering what he’s done it’s not taking anything away from DJ and today we’re learning that apparently he can play with an oblique that was torn off the bone is what’s your understanding of the Superhuman powers of Ammon Rod this seems this seems to be a not true story but yet somehow amanra is able to do things that other humans can’t I’ve heard just about everything I know this Netflix series is out so it’s unmasking some things about St Brown bottom line is this he’s just so reliable he’s very durable when people say he’s too small can’t play on the outside they put him they line him up in the outside toast somebody um he’s he’s special man he’s just really really good and obviously a fourth round pick and the 20 receivers that we’re taking in front of him has kind of become an old bit around here but um man he can he can he can do it all and you know new contract I don’t think that will affect him at all um you know injuries are not playing through injuries are not uh this guy is just he’s he’s the leader of the of the offense I mean Goff is but when when you know when you you got to go on Third and eight you got to get that first on a fourth and seven that’s the guy you’re looking for is number 14 you know another good option is Sam leapor is this like the next Travis C like the the year he had in his rookie season was phenomenal and I went to the University of Iowa so secretly I’m like okay Sam leard do your thing but what has been your just again reaction to what he did in year one and what he can possibly do moving forward in this offense yeah Nick I had no idea that he would do that I mean come on uh right now most experts think after Kelsey and KD he’s the best and he’s only in his second year uh it’s amazing how much better he got as a blocker as a season waron uh as a pass catcher the way he was able to to get down the field make plays he was always available he was always open I can’t remember the time he dropped a pass and you look up at the numbers and go setting rookie records for yardage and everything else and we had a really good tight end here with the Lions and TJ hackinson but I think the Lions saw something where they’re not going to they weren’t going to extend TJ let’s get rid of him now traded him within the division but got some draft capital for him good good draft Capital the second round pick too and um and leaport has been unbelievable you’re right I mean can he be any better than he was man that would be that would be something special but was interesting the other day when Travis Kelce was down at that tight endu and they asked him who uh who the best tight end is down there and he said it was without a question Sam leapor I mean you you got to give Brad Holmes a lot of credit the dude’s the dude has a great eye for talent um and leaport is you know obviously somebody that you can throw Under the Umbrella of of dudes that he identified all right uh but let’s let’s go back in time and bring in a guy who’s now playing for the Bears what do you what do you think the Bears have in DeAndre Swift here Matt are are are Bears fans G to be loving him come the middle of the Season or are they going to wish that David mcgomery was back in a bear’s uniform all right you just car you just said something interesting will they love him in the middle of the season do you love players in the middle of the Season that are uh inactive because the middle of the season is when DeAndre usually’s got a hip pointer an ankle uh sprain knee you’re gonna love him in August and September but he is just not durable he’s always hurt last year he looked very good in Philadelphia very good and I was impressed also as a contract year so I’m interested in seeing how many games you get out of him because if when he’s touching the football and he’s in space he’s great and I think that’s a nice upgrade the question’s going to be how many games you getting out of him because like you said middle of the year is usually DeAndre deactivated Swift and uh I I root for him he’s a good guy and I think that uh like I said when he’s healthy he’s excellent but question’s going to be durability so would you rather have Swift or Montgomery um well I know I’d rather Jamir Gibbs than both those too that you of that uh you know I I mean yeah I think I think the Lions you know I think they knew what they were getting in Montgomery in terms of they needed another veteran with the leadership The Experience runs between the tackles um and I like David Montgomery a lot I think Swift is obviously a better pass catcher and could probably be somebody that you’re throwing wheel routes to more than you would with with Montgomery but that’s you know pretty there they’re they’re pretty even to me I mean I think they’re both really really good backs um I just think Montgomery I’m expect I would expect more games out of Montgomery played than DeAndre Montgomery compliments jir Gibbs really well too like so it’s like a perfect combination there that’s fair uh just trying to stir up some controversy running back controversy here on on July 11th that’s what I’m here for so Matt let’s ask you a question that you can’t necessarily know the answer to so just your opinion on this but do you think the lions are built for this that their personality with Dan Campbell and Aiden Hutchinson entertaining you singing Billy Jean with Aman R telling everybody it’s super bowl or bust do you think that that locker room has the I don’t know hootspa there’s a good word for you people out there to just handle the the the bright lights that are going to be there especially if you get off to a good start in the expectations that are going to mount this is it this is Detroit’s going to do this I just I I I think they they they can I think they’re well grounded I think you know it starts at the very top with ownership and then Chris Spielman obviously has a big role in the front office and just the culture of the operation there and and you mentioned Brad Holmes and Dan Campbell um I think just going to come down to talent and say and health but as far as the mental stuff and people worried about oh they made the NFC championship game last year so now they think they’re hot you know what and they’re going to be so good and there’s there’s no way they’re going to lose and and everything else uh they’re not going to get involved in that you know I I don’t think they’re going to listen to the hype I don’t think they’re going to you know hear the prognosticators who you remember back in the day sports illustrator would put something crazy on the cover like oh the lions are going to win the Super bowl or whatever and maybe that would be the case if that Magazine still existed wouldn’t matter to the lines I think Dan Campbell is gonna have a good message in two weeks a training camp of say one game at a time and all that stuff and we’ve done nothing but let’s take that next step this is a three- win football team a few years just a couple years ago went to three went to nine went to 12 I still think because of the schedule they might not win as many games as they did last year but I think they’re going to be a a better outfit I think they have a better roster not worried about the emotional stuff the distractions stuff in the locker room contracts everybody’s taken care of pretty much uh L mcneel and Taylor Decker need to be extended but golf’s Deal’s done pan su’s Deal’s done St Browns deals done um so I think from that standpoint Mark you ask a good question I think they’re okay question’s going to be what if Hutchinson knock on wood got hurt could they get enough pass rush um playing a rookie corner like terion Arnold is he ready for the for the for the stage those are the things I’d be more worried about than all the hype and people talking about them Matt we were talking about Dan Campbell and the culture that he has obviously created in Detroit where do you see that manifest itself when when it comes to football games where in terms of the culture that Dan is set like you see it out there when the Detroit lons are playing football where do you see that most I think the coaching staff Nick is really good and they’re empowered how many times have we seen well the OC and the DC are not on the same page or who’s calling the plays is it the head coach or the offensive coordinator uh you know in Cleveland a couple years ago Kevin stefans he’s done a fantastic job with the talk of well should he be calling the place none of that goes on Dan Campbell empowers Ben Johnson call your offense and go I’ll be here to tell you let’s go for it let’s punt let’s kick a field goal whatever it is he allows him that space Aaron Glenn the same thing as a defensive coordinator there are a lot of former players on this staff most of the staff all played in the league Antoine Randall L wide receivers coach Hank fry o line coach Mark Brunell quarterback’s coach all these guys played and are not 60 or 70 year old guys these guys have just played recently du Staley was on the staff a few years ago the guys really Buy in really Buy in to their position coaches uh um Kelvin Shepard the linebacker coach is extremely popular that’s going to be a guy that in a few years is going to be a head coach in this league so staff’s really good and they buy in that’s kind of where it all comes from who’s this defensive lineman Levi aneri can you do that can you do that for me I’m hearing I’m hearing anzu zorki is gonna be a thing here Matt says who who said that that was like that that came out of mini Cam that he had a really good spring there’s quotes from Dan Campbell uh you know this is the under you know as if the Lions need more things going well for him Ana workis coming out of nowhere here and Levi who yeah if people don’t know own yeah so so so Bears fans don’t need to be worried about on on wer damn it I’ve never been a fan I I think he’s been underwhelming as a second round pick you want to talk about Brad holmes’ drafts going four years deep now have been phenomenal if you look at the I think it’s 26 or 27 picks that he’s had and I think all but one are still on the roster it’s amazing the amount of guys that are still around and have made it Levi is a guy as a set former second round pick that really has not performed he’s been hurt when they drafted him out of Washington he was hurt and he just never has been on the field enough um and when he’s been on the field it’s been okay it’s a contract year for him so if this is the time for him to step up that’d be great because obviously always could use depth on the interior of that defensive line but yes you’re right he did have a good mini camp but is at the second coming of uh Refrigerator Perry I’m not so sure I’m just letting people know that they’re watching the chgo Bears podcast today I love I love it you’re really going deep you’re really going inside with this stuff well you know we’re we’re listen I’ve already figured out we we got it that golf is is is crushing and Aman ra is the man and Bears fans are puking are you would would you say Matt before and so much appreciate the time love having you great to see you superstar in the media world for a long long time now um would you say that it’s accurate the consensus out there Lions one Packers two bears three Vikings four do you agree with that I do but I will say this I don’t I’m not a huge fan of your coach I I I’m not sure he’s the guy I think the talent is is getting better you could just see it uh the roster is much better uh that receiving core is scary good uh you know you got some guys uh the question is going to be if Matt eflu can get it done um because I think the better Coach is Kevin oconnell in Minnesota by far but again everybody’s just thinking oh Minnesota sucks well last year if you saw what KOC did and what Brian Flores did I thought that was pretty good for a team that lost their quarterback trotting out a different quarterback every week it seemed like had a lot of injuries on defense knew they were going to lose to Neil Hunter uh and did better than expected so everybody now is you’re right saying what you just said Mark that’s going to be the order Detroit Green Bay Chicago Minnesota but I’m not sleeping on the Vikings I think this division is going to be really really good like I said before lion fans were thinking oh free a free two wins the last few years with the Bears yet Bears should have beaten the lions at Ford Field last year should have and the lions got housed there in the cold weather at uh along the lakefront so none of these games are going to be easy I like Green Bay and what they’ve done certainly but I also think man they really I thought kind of skied a little bit over their shoes uh uh a little bit or played over their shoes a little bit at the end of last year I’m not so sure that’s that good of a team because they probably should have beaten the ners to play the Lions which would have been interesting I’m not so sure that’s going to happen again people are saying oh Green Bay is taking the next step and the Lions won’t not not ready to go there yet with that Matt you mentioned the cold weather the lake front this is me from behind the camera over here uh 14 of the first 15 games for the lions are going to be indoors it’s pretty well documented Jared Goff hasn’t been great in cold weather how big of a favor did the NFL do for the Lions on their schedule uh is that Greg asking that question that is Stephen Stephen um you know I’ll say this Stephen too week three at Arizona is no gimme when you look at the Lions schedule people like oh the lions are going 4-0 in the in September Arizon is going to be better and that coach is is good and they’re trying to model themselves with Monty and Ganon after Holmes and Campbell uh but yeah I mean any CH any opportunity the Lions get to play indoors on that fast track with the speed that they have with the quickness they run their offense with golf that’s a huge factor and uh you’re right to only go to Green Bay week nine and play at 425 it’s November 3rd it will be cold but it’s not going to be December you know I mean that one game you’re looking at that’s going to be the one you you question about Golf and cold weather is the Bears game uh the third last week of the year so yeah I think it’s I guess it’s a little bit of a favor but uh Jared G won in Green Bay in week 18 two years ago beat Aaron Rogers ended rogers’ career in Green Bay it’s like never that game never happened because everybody just says Nope golf can’t win in the cold what about week 18 in 2022 so he’s done it did he look good in Chicago last year no no he did not that was his worst game Nick you good I thought I thought you gave me the nod with a power look here I mean we answered all of our questions that we had in a rundown I feel like our listeners have gained a lot of insight of this this NFC North rival I got I got one more how many teams the north finish over 500 in your opinion um finish over I’m gonna I’m am I be a bad guy if I say the bears go eight and N what did the bearss go last year they were seven and 10 predicted accurately by somebody on the show yeah I what what here’s the problem what CJ stra did last year was an outlier he was unbelievable people like oh Caleb will just do what CJ does or Jaden Daniels do what CJ does or you know I don’t that’s a tough that’s tough man CJ stoud that was that was Monster what he did I don’t see Caleb Williams doing that yet I I still think the Bears are an eight win eight n Win team uh you know I I haven’t gone game by game and looked at the schedule but um yeah be it’ll be close it’ll be close does Don Burr Chim ritels watch your show do you know because they’re in our show so we’ve got two lions fans that are here every day one is Chim richels who is is oh I see him on the screen now okay yeah and then and then we’ve got Don yeah then we got Don Burr these are these are every day they watch every day every day consistent I love it that’s great that’s great I love we we love that they’re here but we’d also you know we’d pass them off to you Matt too what else so what else is going on in Chicago let’s talk here uh should we should we bring up John shrien or or or the Bulls off season what should we talk about the the White Sox TV guy has certainly made an impact in in in his in his in a unique way that is accurate uh the Bulls are a disaster that’s accurate um the same the same the 90s and uh you know uh baseball on both sides of town is really nauseating but that’s why Caleb is coming Matt this is going to be worst a decade long run uh you know think 80s if you’re the Lions where you know McMahon and Payton and and that’s that’s what that’s what that is about what’s that’s what’s coming and the Bears are going to own Chicago for for a good period here before Conor badar takes over they they own oh that’s right well they own him already regardless come on I mean that’s just yeah this would I love and let let me say this let me Shi for a second I love driving in the car on some Sundays and putting on Jeff jonak and Tom there I think they’re tremendous I’m huge fan of the radio team uh I miss my buddy Zach zadan being on the sideline Zach’s my guy uh I love I love listening to those broadcasts touchdown Bears I love that love that I’m EXC I always get kick out of listening to those guys JJ’s ready to go there there’s there’s no doubt about it he’ll no doubt he he’ll also you know whenever I see him at training camp and and just in general he looks at me with a cross-eyed look of how do you have a job which I don’t take offense to him that’s that’s okay um
