Bryson’s war of words with his old coach, Rory reappears, & Golf Advice | The Shotgun Start

Andy and Brendan ring in the start of coffee golf season on this Friday episode. Things start with an unsubstantiated story about our favorite frugal tour pro and his stint on an enhanced dating app years ago. After that, the two dissect the biggest news of the day, Adam Schupak’s report about Bryson DeChambeau’s falling out with former coach Mike Schy, which involves family accusations and extortion allegations. The conversation then turns to the return of Rory McIlroy to the public eye, as he started the Scottish Open with a round of 65 on Thursday. After going through Rory’s comments from Wednesday, Andy drops a note on the ISCO Championship and where the Illini stand on the leaderboard in Kentucky. To wrap things up, Golf Advice returns with some height discrimination and an all-time jamming on a Scotland links trip.

greetings and welcome to a Friday edition of the shotgun start it is July 12th Andy how we doing Brendan I am doing great the uh the content gods have delivered what have they delivered exactly link season link season Bry his coach war at war or his Old Coach it’s uncomfortable Bryson’s PR team I Envision has a uh has a day since last incident sign in their office and it’s it’s been an alltime every day has been a record record Setter for the last few months you know never been an easier job than managing Bryson’s image and then this bomb gets dropped on it I mean it’s just a roller coaster we’ll talk about him in a minute do you have any Frugal light updates for the Frugal lights anything about the coffee cart uh I I haven’t gotten anything about the coffee cart um okay disappointing that I haven’t heard back about that but I did get something else as soon as you release that story we heard from multiple people who may be in the motherland the golf you know home Scotland who who are going to be we’re not going to have the webcam 247 on the coffee cart but we do have a few eyes and ears it seems like on the ground investigating this what else did you get about The Frugal for The Frugal I guess I’d call it an unsubstantiated story here it it started with Frugal ferelli is the A+ nickname um so this story is about you know a a a a female who maybe had interest in forelli you know there was some mutual interest she got on a plane went down went down to frell’s uh where forelli lives and you know it was uh you know it was going to be a big weekend just trying to find love trying to find love out there so they go they go out they go ahead to dinner the first night and uh and he asks to split the bill I would not say that’s you know the first step in finding love or good first somebody flies down to see you yep yeah but a man must have a code and stand on principle and we know what his are that’s true this he wasn’t trying to put up a smoke and mirrors he was trying to reveal his true self to to this potential love interest he was not you know I I can appreciate that he wasn’t playing a game hey if this is going to work this is how who I am and how it’s going to be and this is the way we go about things huh we we we haggle over Pete EP you know masks during the you know search charges we look for the extra you know odds and ends maybe look for extra guac wasn’t there a Chipotle like there was a Tik Tock Chipotle Trend where if you take your phone out and start filming them making your bowl or burrito they would add extra because they were worried actually are trained they’re trained to load up the bowl it is like I guess it’s apparently in the corporate bylaws or whatever it these the people at Chipotle are trained if you pull your phone out and start recording or act like you’re even recording they will load up a burrito bowl look I’m all for getting a little extra sugar a little extra on top Frugal fatelli for sure does this but like can we just let the [ __ ] Chipotle employees be like get your phone out of their face let them do their job like I mean this is absurd and you’re making little tick tocks about it cuz you want five extra pieces of chicken just let like it’s it’s like the kid is working at Chipotle let the guy be and I don’t use the f word that bad that often but I think the irony is is that pretty much all of America would be better off without those five extra pieces of of Chipotle meat or you know the extra scoop of rice you know we probably all and I say this personally all could skip that and be in a better spot physically um and uh and mentally you know oh but you got that mental Victory walking away with your extra piece of chicken go ahead I know I know that I’ve left the audience on a cliffhanger um shockingly this relationship didn’t work out for forelli or do we know anyone at ABC that we could maybe kind of surface uh Dylan fatelli as a potential for B Bachelor next Bachelor cuz that’s my C TV let’s be real here we don’t want him on The Bachelor that’s too high class we want to get him on one of the Trashy like Netflix dating shows that’s a better fit that’s a better fit the other thing is I feel like there’s always on those shows there’s always like NFL player in masquerading as a guy that had like a that worked was at a training camp and they call him like an NFL player or like C of coffee you know and for forelli at this point he could be PGA Tour player even though he’s he’s very you know much not a PGA Tour player right now but he’s a former winner I mean I want to say forelli at the time of this you know was was a pretty prominent player he was he was probably Riding High around his deerwind when this this incident happened he you know this this connection might might have been made on a on one of those fancy dating apps upscale upscale dating apps okay okay um I it’s the way of the world now all right I I it’s an yeah an interesting way to go about things but he has a code and he sticks sticks to it um that’s our Frugal Light update I love that hey I just want to give a shout out to our friends congrats to Beatty not an adre announced as President’s Cup uh President’s Cup Outfitters full deal both sides zero restriction and be ratty I like that do you think we could put our thumb on the scale now given our longstanding relationship with B drat about potential team members did you see Jaylen Brown is accusing Nike of sort of boxing him out of Team USA Basketball because he’s criticized Nike or something in the past maybe we given our relationship with the new outfitter for the president cup maybe we could get our thumb on the scale like Nike allegedly box don’t I don’t know it’s more about who I’d want to box in I think like El toasty and people like that I’m more of an about inclusivity not not boxing people out I well you gotta box someone out to box someone in that’s true you we know you would try to box out as many Canadians as possible given your recent run of of CA Canada hatred on this podcast just popping I mean hogi hogi sitting there at 17 I think we’d have to try and get get him in there but that’s big time congrats to our friends at be drat and zero I I had a friend that played with hogi um he’s a very good player himself very good player in his own right and he just said that that hogi was one of the most impressive ball Strikers he’s ever seen ever seen I’m sure Premier flusher yeah yeah that’s not surprising to hear he’s one of the best ball Strikers on the best golf tour in the world at its deepest time ever I’m sure he’s good he was playing with him at uh of course you know where I’m going up to this weekend we’ve got a a little a little deal he was playing with them at Leo okay and that’s hogy man playing at Leo that’s another check in his box win for I think he shot I believe he shot a effortless 65 is what I was told and it was like like no problem should have probably been a couple shots lower like never wasn’t in doubt of going higher is what I was told like it was like one of those like got nothing out of it shot 65 um from the very back edge of every back T box so as long as it could be apparently um so so the person that I I know that played with him knows quite a bit about the course and said uh you know what do you want to know hogi said I don’t really care about about anything just tell me where to hit it doesn’t care about the history the architecture what what went into making the course just tell me where to hit it seems like kind of yeah well that’s probably pretty part and parcel for tour Pros I mean they’re not like that’s what makes you know Zack Blair and maybe even Rory recently sort of a little little bit of unicorns in their own way and others you know they’re just the history the significance the point of certain holes or features is immaterial it’s tell me where to hit it but you know hogy at least he went out there and played it you know that’s a good that’s another boost in the in our hogy boosterism I suppose another check um let’s get to the Scottish open oh we should first shout out I know you’re very Scottish open let’s get to the the bomb the nuclear bombs we got a shout out quickly the battle I couldn’t believe this this war of words happen happen between these two guys this is nothing Kip popper and Bailey Bish won the US adaptive open great shout them out yeah seriously how how about gol Saudi getting in the podium I know you had a lot of questions golf Saudi getting into the Adaptive Golf Scene just a giant logo on Old Kip’s hat uh that’s an interesting play by gol Sai hit in the Adaptive circuit so bayy Bish and Kip poer have won congrats to them uh you want to go with Bryson and Mike Shai you want to talk about family drama here essentially uh M Mike shy you know just saying that Bryson treated his dad like [ __ ] literally that’s what he said I’m not I’m not paraphrasing or implying that’s a quote um I mean a little uncomfortable money squabble look Adam shupac shout shout out I saw this post happen on um on Tuesday night on somebody sent it to me on Facebook which I’ve am belatedly not a part of for the last six years of my life or so uh Mike Shai posting this it says Bryson hates nonprofits that’s in this release this statement about the John D Shambo tour going under not not getting off the ground like wow that’s that’s an incendiary thing to say uh you’re really calling out Bryson this will be you know the truth is somewhere in the middle Adam shupac follows up talks to ball sides I think we tend to say like how about shupac you know not not just the mule Whisperer here just set the got the record button on and just let him roll he needs to get yeah yeah he took a he should be going around the range of the Isco champion ship getting mule comments but no no I just the shoe Box’s all over it that’s great that’s great it was a good report it lays out comments for both sides and like for those that aren’t inside Adam has developed uh quite the quite the reputation within the media center as as being the guy that the the mules love to air their grievances to he’s a very well-respected reporter who’s done a lot of very important things in his career for golf but the the term mu whisper is kind of an inside baseball term is that public is that are we making that a public thing just now but either way uh you know Nate Lashley people that that ilk just calling up and unloading the clip to Adam just just will call him up and they they these guys just love talking to him well the Mike shy falls into the bucket he’s on a walk r with the what I loved that he was on a dog walk talking to Adam Adam made sure to include the parenthetical that the dogs were rescues from China and turkey I don’t know why that’s in the story it was humanizing it was an attempt to it was an attempt to make Mike shy a uh a a figure that we we love in and dear Mike shy to the the audience before he absolutely unloaded on the on the public on some of America’s new public number one golfing figure the golf hero that America always needed the Saudi Arabian paid golf hero that America needed Bry to Shambo it’s a big beefy boy who just signs every autograph and tips his C every 10 seconds uh he might be he might be the best man we we’ve been told you know by some he might be the best guy in America best person in America after the US Open win who said that I’m just saying where it’s just some people are positing it uh like Shai so this John D Shambo tour goes under it’s in the Central Valley around the Fresno area uh and the idea behind the premise yeah you got it right the problem which is a real problem is there’s no more affordable junior golf especially say you go to these Middle Market areas uh say Central Valley and you need at least $200 to enter a single event it seems like and that the events that Bryson would have grown up playing are no longer they’ve evaporated they’ve gone away and this was an idea to create a tour a series of events with no more I think the max entry fee was $60 age ages 12 to 18 um you know they talk about it Shai of course goes back with Bryson to day one essentially kind of got him going on the single length irons was there caded for him when he won the usam has been in his camp for a long time then was not in his Camp they blew up I think in 18 but then was round I swear to God last year at Oak Hill the PGA and Hae called that out and he was walking around he’s on camera so he’s been in and out you know combustible as Bryson has with many of his relationships are in and out and combustible and and you know hot and cold but Mike has been there like since the beginning um and and developed a lot of like The Quirk that Bryson has the single length iron and stuff like that so they talk they’re like look man there’s no Junior Golf Scene here anymore or they’re affordable what can we do said let’s name it after your father I think was Shai’s idea I believe call it the John D Shambo tour um and we need like 125 I think it was actually Bryson’s idea if I remember reading it but you know I’ve got bad memory I thought it was John yeah Mike shy he hated yeah I thought it was whatever it doesn’t matter named it after his dad um either way they need money for it Bryson obviously has made a lot of money in recent years uh that doesn’t mean he has to give it away to every body at all times but this seemed like a cause and a namesake that he would support he did he offered 125 Grand his agent says it was 130 Grand to start it there’s a lot of dispute there’s like back and forth I don’t know if we know what the number was what was required um they have some documentation of a line of$ 120 $130,000 um Shai you know Shai suggest not so shy not so sh not so shy I think that’s how you pronounce his name um he comes out and he blasts him like the money hasn’t shown up it hasn’t shown up he won the US Open he didn’t thank Mike Shai he didn’t mention Mike shy in a list of names that seemed to push Shai over the edge obviously going public and posting this to Instagram and Facebook and the way that he did saying you hate nonprofits like you’re not honoring your father father’s namesake kind of like essentially that’s sort of a point of no return I would say um I’d say that’s a going nuclear was what falkov D shambo’s agent called it I would agree with them on that like whether you think it’s time to go nuclear or not this is going nuclear um when you post that statement and make it a public issue um so Bryson pops back this was a great quote from the statement I the the money didn’t come so the the the announcement was this this dambo tour folds John dambo Bryson says I’m at a high point right now and I’m a big character right now not quite as big as you used to be I’m at a high point right now and I’m a big character right now and I’m trying to do what’s right for the game of golf and you’re trying to bring my image down to hurt the game of golf essentially so I’d say a little self-absorbed a little my love I love using Lo using the game of golf as a shield here y you’re trying to hurt the game of golf by bringing my image you’re everybody Associated you know what Mike Shai’s trying to hurt us Brendon we’re associated with the game of golf Mike Shai’s not just hurting Bryson he’s hurting me and you he’s essentially trying to say every Golf Course should be paved over and put you know affordable housing that’s essentially what he’s saying by attacking Bryson with this he’s taking the whole game into the crosshairs um this just ain’t a story it’s a disgruntled employee my friend he said to Adam he was using his placement in regards to my dad’s name to leverage a junior tour to be created so he could bring more kids out to his place which I don’t care about all I care about is doing right thing for the Central Valley so Bryson accusing shy of trying to use his name to funnel kids into his whatever training and yes yes yes uh I will continue to bring you know the game of golf to the Central Valley in numerous facets I can give them money tomorrow the point is I want to make it sustainable I don’t want to be diving out money and giving it away fruitlessly he said I hate nonprofits just an incredible accusation Bryson hates I got some messages we found someone I got a message from a prominent prominant figure in the Central Valley that said we finally found someone who hates charity more than Brendan oh my God yep that’s me I just hate the 313 terrible Endeavors as a whole we had a we had a great quote sorry to to go change the so we had a great quote from Tyler Ray about in in design notebook uh this week in club TF about the rocket mortgage and the changes he’s goingon to be making to to Detroit Golf Club I I don’t have it exactly in front of me right now but it was it was along the lines of listen like the tour doesn’t want this place to be hard the tournament after all is for charity essentially just undercutting the entire PGA Tour unintentionally I mean it was a measured quote we have noticed that the PGA Tour doesn’t want this to be another US Open test and the birdies are fun to watch this tournament is for charity after all like it’s literally my you know the fundraiser for the US you know for the boys and girls club scramble there’s no FedEx no money not competive yes like this tournament is for charity after all I mean I’m never gonna forget that quote Oh it’s so good like it’s it is etched into my brain about about the uh I you know the other thing is i’ I’ve hearing some troubling reports about a potential golf course that they’re they’re trying to you know uh kneecap some of the design features in a future venue I’m not going to go into details but it’s if they I don’t nothing about this I’m just going to guess East Lake maybe I don’t know maybe that’s it I don’t know I if they do it I like part of me is hoping they do what they’re T what they want to do just so just so we can just end end it and say that the tour has no one that understands appreciates or or you know has any clue about what the way Golf Course architecture works that’s well I a it’s a future it’s it’s uh I I hope it h i part of me I don’t want it to happen and I know I’m speaking in very vague terms here I don’t want it to happen from a a a a golf fan viewing for the good of the game of golf maybe maybe it happening would be the best thing for the game of golf just for the visal reaction that will come from from all anybody that understands a shred about how golf course architecture works on the backs of TPC River Highlands changes that just were you know money literally being let on fire for without a point Detroit this quote from Tyler about Detroit and then whatever you’ve got going there’s competition and then there’s charity outings maybe maybe that’s where we’re getting to uh but charity audience with a lot of money for the comp one of the things one of the things about the way they go about sorry this is a detour unplanned detour here one of the things about way the way they go about setting up these golf courses and I think is starting to Bubble over a little bit is these venues are getting pissed because the golf course looks ends up looking like [ __ ] when 28 under went or 24 under and then it’s like wait a second you guys didn’t even use some of the back P back te locations on like holes so you’re playing at 60 yards up and it’s like you just like actively trying you’re making these golf courses look like pitch and putts in some cases yeah yeah uh anity boil let’s go to Shai the other animosity between Shai and D Shambo I don’t know that I need to get into all the more specifics there’s a million howitzers of quotes you know he says this allegedly was supposed to be a non-recourse loan but he wouldn’t need to repay the loan I don’t know what that means um I don’t either shy ass what does that even mean it was the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard so some some clear squabbles over the format and process of how the money would be delivered what amount of money Bryson accuses Shai of trying to extort him of $2 million within days after winning the US Open I mean this is to like Shai was Shai says he introduced him to the crank driver and the irons that he now uses like he’s essentially more or less responsible for that bringing that into you know and that’s a turn Bryson’s life around makes him happier he says when his golf is good he’s happy and we’ve heard Bryson say a lot of his mental his new Love of the Game and the people is due to equipment um which is you know that plays into that a little bit um it’s a sad it’s kind of a sad dispute quite honestly it is um with two very seemed like I mean the second father temperamental fol yeah the second father quote is insane he treats me just like he did his real dad he told he said I’m his second dad right well he treats me just like his real dad he treated his dad like [ __ ] um that’s quote he reiterated it again um dambo says I’m trying to take care of it like a good man it’s unfortunate that he’s had to go to this position to try and take me down it is what it is it’s not true not one bit of it well clearly some of it’s true maybe the specifics are disputed but some of it is true because it’s out in the public now um you have any further comment on this Andy what do you make of this it’s kind of unfortunate it’s not unsurprising given the personality involved uh J Bryson just has a lot of drama around him good bad or indifferent I think Shai some of Shai’s quotes probably could have been he’s clearly beyond the point of frustration going public with this but um I don’t think it’s great out in the open I think there’s some truth it probably in between both of these sides like it’s not as bad as either are representing it yeah but I think that’s a default I think that’s kind of a punt sometimes people make like the truth lies sometimes in the middle I agree with you but like it’s such it’s both sides in this sometimes clearly someone’s probably more in the right uh than than the other person I don’t know who that is who would you venture to say is more in the right if you you know this is a prediction prediction hat on I mean some of Shai’s quotes aren’t exactly endearing but I would suspect um I it sounds like Bryson got won the US Open and got distracted and forgot to get the money off to him and just it became low prior lower priority I would say and that jammed up Shy um he’s probably very hard to work with and deal with Bryson I would guess I would lean more toward shy having some real gripe here seems like Shai might be tough to work with too it might just be a a bad personality match you know but one that goes back you know since he was a boy it seems like it’s been combative for the whole time yeah Mike this is Bryson’s agent Mike says it’s time Bryson opens his checkbook and I get paid I want two million this was days after he won the US Open so uh Shai says I build those I built those irons Mike but I’m sorry this is Bryson popping back at Shai he’s like I work to build those irons personally he did not have input on that uh so they’re disputing over the equip it’s just it’s a lot of like family drama that feel like you know quote unquote family drama that doesn’t feel like it should be out there but it it has thanks to good reporting by Adam and and Shai really go in public with this so I like the end you know ask how he thinks Des Shambo will Faire the British Open next week Shai didn’t has he’ll probably win it yeah yeah Shai seems like justifiably burned up like I did so much and I’m sure he did seems bothered he wasn’t thanked in the US Open he’s like just be a decent person and take care of the junior tour I’ve done so much for this kid uh he’s like I know some of the worst stuff imaginable well I mean Adam shupac just has the phone ready for that that’s only going to Jin up put everybody else on high alert like tell us all the bad [ __ ] from the last 15 years like that’s a that’s a cliffhanger of a quote and my you know so can I ask extort somebody that’s something you’d say go ahead do you think uh Bryson’s getting jammed here or do you think he jammed himself I think he jammed himself it’s a it’s a double jamming clearly he’s he’s dealing with a bit of a an actor who’s got not irrational but you know has has is intemperate in ways some some moments but someone him or his team just need to be on top of this cut the check just just it seems like a great C to get involved with right and your father’s name but they didn’t they couldn’t sort out the particulars I mean $2 million seems like an awful lot for this junior tour that’s not that’s a separate issue that’s not what that was for the two million for the equipment stuff no this is an allegation from Bryson’s camp that Shai said I want my money for the years I’ve just been in Bryson’s corner and all the stuff I’ve done for him so that’s that’s what Li Camp is alleging Shai asked for in the days after the US Open went that’s different from the US junior or I’m sorry the junior tour funding so it’s a messy article some bomb quotes you know what Shai should do now now that it’s out there he should start a GoFundMe for the tour yeah he’d fill it he’d fulfill the GoFundMe I guarantee it and then he could rename the tour or something or or keep it the same name and have like a foot a foot like a header a what we do well at all well congrats to that uh on that one I you know I saw Forbes released a list of uh the public and private ivys okay new public your your BC Eagles were on there private Ivy my L my El were in the public ivys oh there we go so everybody calls us idiot look at that we could say this is an Ivy League two ivy league H I wouldn’t say I got necessarily an ivy league test when I was there I got more of a TPC Deer Run test when I I sort of navigating my way around there with uh yeah with with a little bit of ease this was 20 years ago but I think my uh the Mantra of my my uh education at at Illinois was D’s get deg grees God very very close to not making it out of there uh yeah I came home my first semester and my dad said you’re going to Cleveland State if you ever bring these Gres home again and they improved there was only one way to go but up so that was it that’s the way to do it kids honestly like like you literally can only go up over the next four years and you slowly build your GPA up from that Baseline and I I got out of there with the respectable GPA anyways um public ivys or public and private iys whatever we are that’s that’s who we represent let’s go to the Scottish open unless you have any more dambo stuff oh I bore Isco takes I mean shac needs to get out of there lanto and T1 Troy Merritt oh my God bum the Bumblebee Andy suvan let’s go to the Scottish open where Roy mroy returned to the public eye returned to public golf shoots a five under 65 left a few out there by his own admission certainly on this second nine I believe which was the front nine of the golf course um immediately back into The Fray I thought he had I thought he had a really interesting press conference on Wednesday said some more on uh Thursday after his first round talked about I don’t know being he can vividly remember starting to get uncomfortable with his putt on 16 at Pinehurst like waiting for Patrick to line his up thinking about it I loved I loved I loved the quote of you know Patrick can take some time can take his time I don’t think he was like trying to D it’s just on your mind when you talk about can’t KL you there’s Drive buys where you’re you’re ready for it and you’re going and then there’s Drive buys when you just sort of happen stance and I think that was a the gun just happened to go off while I was driving by it was not a premeditated driveby it was an accidental pulling the trigger that’s what I’m guessing I’m guessing so he talked about it was a good day until it wasn’t you know I think this is what we talked about the first four incredible golf I thing about the wasn’t choking with lman last week go ahead the other thing about Klay the Klay he missed the Putt in front of him Ah that’s not I believe he missed a short one himself if I if I recall okay you know it it talked about a lot of stuff we mentioned or or everybody has not just us like it seems like he might have he says he might have paid attention too much to Bryson but that was the flow as we talked about the golf course green the tea Transitions and just the way the holes kind of routed through there towards the last especially five for five holes um but I I thought it was I thought it was really insightful he admits to vividly becoming uncomfortable uh and I think that’s not like that that’s being honest uh you know he talks about getting back up you know that’s been the great sort of thing of his career he took a run at Hank Haney and smiley Kaufman um which I wasn’t even what is the what is the criticism of Harry for specific number two he needed to get in there and yeah the seven iron on 15 was Smiley’s thing that he needed you know a caddy that would say you not hitting the seven iron on 15 hitting an eight iron and he needed like the whole premise was that a different caddy you know one of these caddies these great caddies that uh that also hit the shots you know well John Wood’s gonna win the Ridder cup I mean we got John Wood now here’s the thing if if didn’t have Harry on the bag he wouldn’t he wouldn’t have missed the put on 18 that’s that’s the that’s the the thought process of the the great caddy takes I’m not trying to downplay caddies I’m not trying to like I think a cad is important but this idea that like there’s just like the guy’s the number two player in the world and he’s bad you know like in an era where like people his age are fading out he’s arguably playing better golf than he’s ever played in his career y you know yep and and us as a society is like we can’t we can’t like I think this is the thing and I think Rory’s to blame here Rory effectively says he got like all you know what if anybody that’s read Bob rell’s Books as I you know this was when Bob rotell I was growing up when Bob rotell was uh was really the guy yeah I mean it’s all about staying in the present as a golfer staying in the present like staying focused on like your next shot not worrying about what’s going on around you now like people are blaming Harry when and here Rory talks and he basically admits that gets out of the present mindset and when being behind him kind of thing right and watching that yeah this is this is so similar I it’s f i i don’t want to relate this this is not at all like a you know a Apples to Apples situation I when I played the US midam in 2016 I made a birdie on my 28th hole and I was like probably like four shots inside the cutline to make match play and literally I’m walking there’s a long walk to the next and I’m thinking about playing match play I was like just like that’s where my head went I left the present literally the next hole is the easiest hole on either of the two courses such an easy hole it’s like just blast a driver up there chip it up on the green you know you’re going to make birdie or par I make a double like just make a complete mess of the hole that’s what happens when you leave that pre that pres staying in the present mindset Rory standing there like have you ever seen a caddy when a player has a 2 and 1/2t Putt have you ever seen a caddy run that like is running in like it is a cleanup but Rory as he as he admitted in this press conference leaves the Pres like I think this is like the crazy thing like how could what what caddy would change that because that’s what happened um I think it’s a fine line to walk though saying in the like he talked about on 18 He Saw Bryson was essentially left left and I got to like I I it influenced how he hit that Putt and I think probably appropriately so he’s arguing like I don’t want to have 10 feet coming back when a double knocks me out and a bogie could have had me in a playoff because he’s looking that Bryson’s way off the planet and so that’s not necessarily staying in the present of what you like so it influenced how hard he hit the putt he didn’t want to hammer at 10 feet past I think that’s probably appropriate so it’s a fine line to watch walk tricky point out another uh inadvertent driveby maybe the gun going off again yeah on the on the on the data boys the data Community who insists that uh that downhill sliders you’d rather have a you know you’d rather have a short downhill slider than a than a uphill putt that you should never value being below the hole this is there a perfect admission of why that that [ __ ] matters there’s no context Andy it’s just distance and it’s it’s plots and there’s there’s it doesn’t matter that’s it’s Blackjack it is Blackjack you know here it is a golfer talking about how he can’t hit a putt the way he wants to hit a putt because he’s worried about the next one and he been he would have been better off with a 10- foot uphill putt I think that I think that’s the other thing that I took away from this he hit a great Chip Shot but in that moment it wasn’t a great Chip Shot because it put him in a position where you just I remember sitting next to that green I have this great photo and I it it’s got the scoreboard and I saw where the ball got to and I was just like in my stomach I was like oh that’s the last place I’d want to be putting from like the last place but you know hey I tried to say that to lman last week he he shot me down I was like it was a it’s like how you said it’s a great Chip Shot but it wasn’t a great Chip Shot right I never value where you are never value where you are on on on the green just close it it doesn’t matter it doesn’t matter actually I’ve read sometimes some people believe that downhill putts are easier uh down just go yourself downhill sliders all day Bryson had a real like a actual take on why they’re easier like trying to explain it but um well I’ll tell you what Bryson putt that was I think longer that was uphill they could just bash yeah yeah it was seemed like an easier putt yeah yeah the 16 one is a real issue and he talks about that kind of he seems that’s where he was not present sort of lost his head a little bit looking at Bryson where he is up 16 um waiting extra time getting uncomfortable just I thought it was great candid stuff it was not was the opposite of Nelly Corda talking about whatever happened with her dog bite and like that was a weird pres I I just want some insight into what happened and he was very good at it he needed time obviously you know he didn’t do it right after the round go ahead I think the other thing um that is super interesting about the quotes and like losing like why golf in in 72 holes is so hard and what people I think always like your average sports fan looks at golf and says this is not a hard test like it’s not a physical test the excruciating amount of mental stress that is put on you over 72 holes and and when the conditions are really really difficult pin number two exacting is a great word is so challenging it’s hot you’re outside and you’re you’re in this cauldron where you’re mentally just you know for five six hours in like this world where that requires every ounce of your focus one of the things that I that these quotes made me think back too was Rory after the third round he talked uh I think it was Takira Dixon it might if I if that’s or if it was Damon I’m not sure but he talked about how much golf he had played and how he was a little worn down and it was like the it was about getting his energy levels back this type of slip is like if you’re a little fresher does that happen maybe not because this is just like a mental this is a mental slip it’s just like that’s like what’s something that happens maybe when you’re tired he had an incredible round I mean I’m not letting him off the hood like he lost it at the end uh it was like an incredible day for and he talked about that like it’s that’s the best I’ve played in that situation in a long time um I think that’s the other thing to take away from it is like that golf course and and similar with Bryson and they both deserve a lot of credit early in their career or at points in their career that Golf Course setup was like the complete opposite you’d ever think either of those players would thrive in and I think like both of them deserve a ton of credit for how they’ve become they aren’t Specialists they’ve become more well-rounded and better players and I think that that should be the general takeaway for both of them is that like it’s amazing like they’re they’re two of these special players who are not content just being really good at what they’re good at they have both evolved and improved other aspects of their game to be better fit to play that type of golf perfect segue because today he shoots a 65 five under 65 and they’re asked them uh you don’t want to get ahead of yourself but anything you’re working on this week getting ahead for Royal Troop getting ready for Royal trun he says not really just familiarizing myself with the lynx golf again first time I’ve played a lynx course since Hoy Lake last year like that just sucks I’m sorry it sucks and maybe that’s more more argument for a world tour but when you have someone like you just talked about this Rory Bryson adapting showing their skills on different like he’s not played Links Golf in competitive or otherwise in a year anyways just a quick observation one of the most fascinating aspects of the game that we are missing out on right now is the idea of being able to see players play wide range of different venues and styles of venues and understand what players are better suited for different things we know like very little but the you know but the idea of like the homogenation of of most of Tour golf into a bucket of golf courses like a a type of archetype of golf courses sucks and then the last one he said today I thought it was interesting talk about going to New York we thought he was like in a dark room in like South Florida he was like walking around on the Highline which is incredible on like Monday through Wednesday but still not still not bouncing up to to Connecticut going home uh that’s incredible and he said you know very it’s very uh succession like you know you have this brutal defeat and then you have the character walking around the Highline with his airpods in I’ve always like to figure things out myself I’m not really one to reach out for advice they’re talking about how he went to New York and walked around I’ve always there’s not a lot not to say there was a lot of unsolicited Tom Kim a budding Korean Superstar but like clearly somebody was on call and ready about signed up with that exemption and like I don’t know it’s just kind of shitty anyways but he’s in the field but also there’s a silver lining of you get the best field possible that’s fair for for one for person that doesn’t believe sponsors exemptions uh should exist this is the best case scenario for sponsors exemption because the most qualified person because he didn’t register gets into the field and then the most qualified sponsor exemption possible is placed into the field there’s such a quick yeah you know clerical not oversight that you could that could avoid this but it happened um one way to create the best golfer to improve the field is hit golf forever hit up golf forever I’ve been doing this Andy honestly honest to God I’ve played some good golf recently for me I’ve been I’ve been doing okay positive about your game I kind of have a little bit of the bug I I had one very bad round in it he’s like if you want to Bomb It 400 yards this is what so if you are that kind of kid you’re a good player you’re looking for that Advantage you can do that or if you’re an 80-year-old it’s all incredibly discrimin discriminatory to us tall golfers why does Brian Harman get to drop a ball 13 in lower to the ground than kristo lampre why is Christo more penalized by gravity while dropping a ball into thick rough than that horse jockey how say you how do we roll back the drop to get more Level Playing Field for golfers of all Heights this is precisely my kind of email just a crazy gripe with the most peripheral dumb thing calling it out getting angry about it have you always have’t you always been penalized when you had to drop from shoulder height you had to drop higher either way this is what do you want to drop from the maybe we should allow people to drop from the ankle you know or or it’s just yeah I I don’t know what it is you drop you bring out a yard stick and you say you drop from this yard off the ground and however tall you are is where it is it could be at your torso it could be at your shoulder I don’t know you know what it should be you should drop drop from ID these people with lesser known folks who organized a heist to steal your old course tea time so uh I think the perpetrators here might be colleagues of ours somewhere in the media or golf industry space that uh Jam this guy steal your old course te time the situation I was invited last minute on a week-long Scotland trip there were eight people four people were the quote unquote core four who knew each other and been part of an original planning this included Ed some people maybe in our space they booked they had booked it for 2020 but their trip had been canceled because of Co they were still on the hook for the money so they needed people to fill out the other four slots I guess a year later and I gained some all right this person had had had he had gained a spot where he would be a go-to person having not been to Scotland I went phills in on the year later trip on the first day we played Kings bars and returned to the hotel they had booked us at the venerable Fairmont St Andrews which is just you’ll be happy to know they were playing premium accommodations premium amazing Place uh they asked me to maybe that was the old course they got the tea time at that would be sick somebody stole your old course tea time and then gave you tea time at at Fairmont it gets about approaches that all right uh I can’t share that detail because that will out these people I was standing a few so they’re on a phone call I um they he’s hanging out with them uh and they for he went at night at the [ __ ] in to help them hang out and work on something when they were done with their work I was standing a few dozen feet away and heard the phone ring for background we had a nice list of courses around St Andrews and East Lothian but we were in the ballot for the old course every day so not guaranteed but already had a good lineup we’d all agreed we might sleep out one night if we didn’t get picked in the lottery the voice on the call was our tour setup guy a big Scottish voice he was on speaker phone they didn’t know I could hear the good news is the four of you have won the old course ballot the bad news it wasn’t you to so the organizers in core 4 they immediately began to scheme can we just change the names he said you couldn’t but you could I guess play as them you’d have to take all the bag tags off your bags and everything it was decided that the only form of ID you would have to show as your gin card assuming everyone paid in cash shortly thereafter the group text on the trip alerted was alerted with text from the organizers we need everyone to send their gin cards to the group text like this we need them for the courses I don’t know what that means just the lineup they had so they sent the organizer send their own GI card screenshots like the digital gin card to build trust and then others followed important context it was the last week of the old course before it was closing for the open stands were up open Flags probably best time to ever played the old course they wanted their core for to play left out would be me but I was picked and I was not just me but also the best player on the trip a plus handicap who was Loosely connected to the organizers after we left the fair amount for the [ __ ] in we sat in silence they didn’t know that I knew I said when are you going to tell me I won the ballot for the old course it got awkward they started Heming and haing I told them not to do anything sketchy they didn’t tell the other guys they’d won people asked and they said they hadn’t heard anything yet but at the bar someone figured out you could see who won the lottery on the links Trust website so they were about to check and that’s when they came clean and they told everyone they sat everyone down and said something to effect of this is is our trip we planned it we think that we should be the ones to play there was protesting anger the plus handicap said absolutely not I said it was [ __ ] others were more passive the tea time wasn’t on Tuesday so until Tuesday so there was a day between to figure it out the next day after round at the new course a new fight happened in the Tom Morris bar one of the organizers was indignant I had to walk outside when he said to the plus handicap if you don’t think I should get to play in your place that says a lot about your character it’s a direct quote so takes a spot the guy not giving up his spot says a lot about your character well hold on hold on if this is their trip too I I assume some cost might have been passed I mean the ballot is the ballot I what I’m saying is that some of the attendees might have been passing some of the organizer cost sure that’s the other the other thing that might be extra scummy about this it ends with even a worse twist like that after day have a bullying the other three guys relented if you want to hit if you want to bet that if you want it that bad and you’ll act like a piece of [ __ ] then have it this person emailer was the last hold out and someone text him thanks for being cool about this I responded I was not being cool about this eventually I decided it would be a nightmare playing that round with them anyways having disrupted their quote unquote core 4 so take my spot I go down to the old course I sleep on the ground to get my spot I was there at 10 p.m. got in line I was number six I would go get on however because one of the organizers will be playing under my name I couldn’t use my credit card if I got through the sleeping out process so it was too late to get the requisite pounds out of the bank I went down there just left one request please bring me cash either to pay for this or the credit card of the person I was have to play with since you’re stealing my identity the clock kept ticking and no one came as he’s sleeping out I texted the group it got past 2: a.m. nothing I told them if no one got down there I would be signing up for my spot the next morning as myself and paying with my own credit card at 2:30 in the morning one of the drunken idiot hosts shows up hammered from the bar he starts waking up everyone sleeping out in line and tries to film people he’s talking in an obnoxious fake Scottish accent he almost starts at least two fights not good I get my tea time after sleeping out 4 P.M M look the next afternoon the core four are somehow scheduled to go off right behind me I’m standing on the first te about to hit my t- shot one of them walks up to me they’re asking for IDs can we get yours I almost lose my [ __ ] but hand over my ID I played the first four or five holes of my KY calling me by my fake name I had to play Under until I finally told him the story I ended up having to play I ended up having the Afternoon Of My Life play the last four and three under which is something I don’t have to do 16 so that’s good great day you got a great story out of it then the next day I get a venmo request $60 for caddy fee at cril because I had to sleep out on the ground all night waiting for my tea time I missed our regularly scheduled morning at cril which was already pre prepaid so I had requested caddy and there was a $60 fee if you canceled so one of the organizers asked me to pay the $60 for the Miss cadd round that I had already paid for but didn’t get to play so he paid for the round didn’t get to play that but now they’re requesting the caddy fee as well because he slept out after they took his spot uh so there we go that’s the breakdown I don’t need to read more about it we still had five more days to go in a foreign country with these people including around Cary and North barer so I asked SGS advice what on Earth should a boy do in such a spot you got five days Carusi North baric they Jam you with the cril they Jam you asking for your ID on the te they Jam you as you’re out they’re yelling coming in drunk asking for pounds in the credit card because you’re sleeping out they kind of try to lie to your face about what was said on the original phone call a lot built up here um I wonder what the transportation mode was were you like on a bus with them doesn’t say a lot of great detail in here did not get that like that’s how what I’m thinking about like you know I think you made out it was a really shitty situation but you got to play the old course 4 under 3 under through his last four you know you’re talking Road hole and a bunch of great yeah so and I I assume it seems like this guy’s not going to be hanging out with these guys anymore well he’s got to by circumstance what do you do these last five days I’m saying after right so you’re cutting the cord so to me at this point maybe I just go full ISO ball I show up I play my golf I go do I go enjoy my time by myself go to your coffee shops eat your own meals eat your own yeah yeah yeah I think that’s what maybe I do I seek I seek friendship in other parts I go to I go to some bars alone there are friendly people over there I seek out my own my own new friend and my own enjoyment I go for some morning walks I do not I do not partake in the group activities anymore it’s probably the way I go here I eject I basically eject from everything except for the golf and I know that they are going to pair me far far away from them and that’s the way I take joy in it and commit every detail the memory to then email a podcast a few years later to put these people on blast uh that’s what you do um I I took easy these people I think could be identified if I shared some details um I think you’re on the trip you’ve got Carusi you’ve got North barck I don’t know I’m sure some other good courses you didn’t share you make the best of it you go you just you be cordial and you stow away all the nasty details of this circumstance around the old course te time um from the credit card to the sleeping out to the CR Feed The Heist thing it’s so bad it’s such a bad send an image of your gin card when like there’s clearly a motive for it and they don’t share the actual motive I don’t know just it’s the ballot I get these guys feeling a little bit entitled like they they organized everything and all that but that’s just the way the cookie crumbles with the old course ballad and so fair is fair on that we Ed Kyle Robins advice of just being normal yeah I yeah I get being bummed like you feel like you deserve it but then be normal when you don’t get it you can’t act out like this or act upon it this way I would guess hey you know using I don’t know who these people are to be clear I don’t know who these people are I’m just saying if I shared more details I’m sure some internet slutes could figure it out I don’t know who these organizers are personally can we use the uh the uh who got jammed here who’s doing the jamming who got jammed it seems like this guy they attempt to jam these guys oh yeah they were doing the jamming but now he’s getting them he’s jamming back with an email a couple years later yeah I feel like people are going to figure this out either way um yeah maybe maybe um I think you I think there’s one detail in the story that you laid out that’s probably GNA cost cost the people I thought I was I he had a lot of language in here that would have identified them immediately I don’t know who they are personally um and I can’t figure it out nor did I look into it um it’s bad I think you stay on the trip like you said you make the best of it you play some great golf courses you understand your company sucks and that’s golf sometimes you get Bad Company maybe Ally up with the people that also thought they were getting jammed right the plus handicap who’s whatever also got replaced or something and they were getting mugged off use a use a UK term that was a poor timing take simple water mug off will always make me laugh all
