hey golfer Tony McMullen the founder of smart Golf Academy here today we are talking wedges how to control your wedges how to flight them a little bit better and how to hit them a little bit more solid what I’m going to give you is a tip today that’s going to help you to do all those things and then that’s going to equate to your scorecard it’s going to give you a little better score because you’re able to make those scoring shots count because you have a better understanding of how your wedge should work all right but before we get to that we’d love it if you give us a like And subscribe to our Channel we put out great content every week to help you enjoy the game more and get better at it and if you have a part of your game that’s lacking something you’re not sure about something that that doesn’t work as well as it should drop us a line we might be able to make a video that might just help you out there okay so now wedges one of the chief complaints that I get from my clients about their wedge game is that in their full swing of their wedge game they tend to hit the ball pretty high but they don’t get a lot of distance and they don’t feel like they have a lot of control I’m going to give you a general statement here not always but a majority of the time most players that have that complaint and if that’s a problem with your game again this is a general statement but there’s a good chance this is the issue for a right-handed golfer which I am a lot of people because they don’t feel like the swing they’re going to make with a wedge would be anything near like what they’d make with an iron or or a fairway wood or something like that it’s smaller and it’s more compact they think smaller swing smaller muscles okay the problem with that is is when you do that you really never get off of your right side okay picture this if I was going to throw a ball football baseball whatever if I was going to throw it and I threw it off of my right foot okay I could throw it but I’m basing it on arm strength alone okay your arm strength is only so good however if I was able to shift my weight my left foot hit the ground first because I’m right-handed and then I threw the ball I’d be shifting my weight now I would not only be using my arm I would be using my body as well okay with a wedge we want to be able to use our rotation and we want a weight shift with that we want that move right there what that’s going to do for us is that’s going to give us an opportunity to hit the ball lower so you can see I have a 54 degree Tidus Voki wedge there that’s 54 degrees with the shaft straight up and down if I lean that shaft forward a little bit I start taking some Loft off of that and it gives me an opportunity to hit the ball a little bit lower with a little bit more force and a little bit more control if you ever wonder how high the ball should go if I was able to hit this ball with the SHA straight up and down and I wondered how high the ball should go simply stand on your wedge the angle of the shaft is 54 degrees okay neat trick by the way if you’re behind a tree or a couple of trees and you’re wondering can I hit my club can I hit my club high enough to get the ball over the trees you can do this right here and see as long as the shaft points over the trees you’re probably going to be able to hit it high enough okay now to hit your wedges a little bit better a little bit sharper and more accurately we need a little bit of shaft lean at impact how do we get that very simple feel okay this is what’s called The Flamingo drill if you drop your right foot back now if you’re unable to do this getting up on your right toe you can simply just drop your right foot back and just kind of lift the heel a little bit but put all your weight on your left leg okay and then make some nice flat swings just rotating back and forth rotating keeping the club in front of you okay you can actually add this to it if you’d like connect it we’ve done this drill before okay but all your weights on your left leg and you’re turning this is called a post leg if you can picture a fence the post that hold the slats and the boards in place goes into the ground it’s a very stable position and it also helps to keep you grounded and rotating in Balance okay so just some very simple swings like that right there because now you’re getting the feel of when I hit the ball what should it feel like my weight should be on my lead leg my left leg of course if you’re left-handed it would be the opposite it would be your right leg okay very simply hit a few balls like this we don’t need a big swing we just need a swing put your weight on your left leg and nice smooth swings first thing you’ll notice is that you hit the ball more solid and you’re hitting the ball in the center of the face okay so as we work on this get the feel of being able to make that swing on your left leg okay then you can convert over to more of a full swing but make sure your weight shifts over to your left foot left leg looks like that okay it’s going to help you to hit your wedges a little bit more solid lower that trajectory a little bit get maybe a few more yards of distance raise your spin a little bit all good things that are going to equate to good numbers on your scorecard for more tips like these go to smart golf academy.org we’re going to make you a better
