the way Brad Holmes is drafted the way they found players for this team they are set up for success for years this is not just going to be a flash in the pan make the playoffs one year and then we don’t see the playoffs for the next several years have to rebuild find a new quarterback and do all no no none of that this team is set up and uh kudos to Brad Holmes for setting things up now there are high expectations and we’re in unfamiliar territory as lions fans expecting nothing but the best from here on forth um but there’s a there’s always ways to improve the team and this team does have cap space still and you know a lot of it and when you start looking at how well how do you spend that you can spend it on one-ear contracts you can on players that are on the last year of a contract and find teams that are willing to trade players so Bleacher Report has this story about uh six potential players that team should consider moving because they’re rebuilding if they’re rebuilding they need to get resources for those players back which usually comes in a form of draft pick compensation and that’s what we’re looking at so khil Mack was a name I thought was really interesting that was on this list and here’s another one that’s really interesting on this list it’s Edge rusher Matthew judon from the New England Patriots now he didn’t play much last year uh he was uh was hurt missed all but four games last season with an injured bicep but the previous year he had 15 and a half sacks in 22 and and even though he only played in four games last year he had four sacks in those four games now it talks about this one actually has a comp and it says the Eagles were able to turn Hassan reik into a conditional third round pick from the New York Jets if the Patriots could get something similar for judon it would allow them to save $6.7 million in cap space and stock up on draft Capital to build around their quarterback Drake um so that is a name that’s very interesting Matthew judan has been awfully productive in his NFL career and one of the Elite pass rushers in the league when he is healthy like we said last year he only played the four games um but he’s awfully awfully good Kang this is one where I look at and and you see that okay we’re talking about a um a a guy who’s coming off injury it’s an edge rusher he’s 32 years old so it’s not like he’s a spring chicken no but he’s slightly younger than C Mack yeah I mean play played his college ball at Grand Valley yeah it’s from the area but I like here I like Matthew judon I like the conditional part of these picks because that means they have to perform they have to hit some kind of you know uh benchmarks to for those you know for that pick to be a third round pick um for you know to to validate the trade he’s coming off injury which concerns me but he’s been very productive throughout his career even the injured deer last year he had four sacks in four games I actually don’t mind this maybe it’s because he’s slightly younger than CLE Mack but I would be willing to put some kind of conditional third fourth round pick and and kick the tires on on judon I don’t think Brad Holmes is going to do this I don’t think that uh I think they’re just kind of GNA roll with what they have and see how it goes um if there’s a move it’d probably be during the year I think they’re going to roll with I see if James Houston is healthy or not see if Davenport can and can you know his veteran leadership can help the other guys play better bats like I mentioned there’s other guys on this team they might be big name guys like judon and Mack but I think the lions are also counting on Hutchinson to get better Jack Campbell to get better you know the secondary as a whole and defense as a whole to get better with Aaron Glenn maybe playing the defense he’s always wanted to play uh but I don’t think I think when you’re as close as the lines are you never rule out these type of moves because you can do both people you can be sustainable and have these young Blue Chip players that you draft and develop and you can also add that one or two pieces to put you over the top now especially if they’re just like oneyear deals you know you’re not going out and signing someone breaking the bank for I wanted lerus sne okay I’ll be the first admit it but that is a big contract you have to take on if the lines don’t want to do that these other moves like judon and other guys with one two-year deals is the way to go yeah so I’m looking at and comparing judon to khil Mack and I don’t know they both get the same kind of compensation in return if if you’re talking a third round pick I if that’s what it is i’ Do It um particularly for KH Mack I like KH mack more than I like judon because KH Mack has more of a track record of being the guy who’s done that but is his contract heavier uh it is heavier but again if if you can space and it’s just a one-year yeah if you got the space you can afford it go ahead and do it because it is just one year and it’s the year you go for it um because you think you’re that close to getting there now is it something to get done before training camp begins I know that’s the article is about getting to these things done in training camp I doubt that happens I think if an injury or something knock on wood maybe yeah let’s yeah exactly knock on wood there but I mean if you’re the Chargers and you’ve got Khalil Mack and he’s coming off a 17 sacks season like he did last year you’re probably thinking I can maximize his value by waiting until the trade deadline to trade I mean there were remember Brian Burns the offer was the rumor was there were two first round picks that they were turning that Carolina was turning down they made a mistake they made a huge mistake a massive mistake they should have traded them should have gotten the picks um but when you look at KH Mack if you’re the Chargers and you are rebuilding in a way the rebuilding although they probably think they’ve got talent to still be good they look they they lost their top two receivers we’ll see what they end up do they losing a running back um it probably is a rebuilding year if I’m the Chargers and I’ve got this asset who’s an aging player but still productive I’m going to wait to the trade deadline to move him because I think you’re going to get more than a third round pick if you wait until October whatever it is that’s me um judon is interesting but I’m concerned about him because he doesn’t have this long track record of being great now in 2022 had 15 and a half sacks the year prior to that was 12 and a half but before that his career high was n and a half still solid solid yeah he’s not c ma as far as a career exactly it’s solid that’s look it’s like saying Houston was solid in his rookie season when he had eight sacks in seven games but it’s eight and seven you’re thinking can he get double digits if he’s healthy I’m I’m looking at that I just looking at these two names I think it’s really interesting to see that there are Edge rushers that might be available because they’re on teams that are considered in rebuilds certainly the Patriots are but where do the people stand if you have any opinion on this 248 539 9797 is the uh telephone number uh Curious your thoughts on on the Lions here and and you’re just getting excited about this there are there’s another name on this list as well that I don’t think fits the Lions needs anymore but was one to consider absolutely and and if there’s a setback back if there’s a setback with DJ reer would you consider this and that’s Washington Commander defensive tackle Jonathan Allen will be a free agent at the end of the season they got a lot of money tied up in him and if they were to move on and and and start their rebuild as well this is somebody that could make sense it say at the last paragraph Allen would be a useful interior pass rusher for multiple teams he has 22 sacks over the last three seasons from a defensive tackle that’s a lot of production he’s a beast he’s a beast and again it’d be oneyear deal where you’re signing him because he’s in the last year of a contract does that makes sense he’s a stud I don’t think you need to go that route now especially when you got DJ reer and believe it or not people the lions are actually good at stopping the Run they’re one of the best teams at stopping the run last year it’s getting to the quarterback and that secondary that was more of an issue of anything you know hopefully all those pressures that Aiden Hudson had had last year some more of those turn into sacks this year uh having DJ reer in the middle helps with the run but also helps with the pass rush because he’ll hopefully be taking on double teams where Lee mcneel who’s more of a can get to the quarterback pressure Tye type of guy can help with that route I like Jonathan Allen as a player a lot but I’m not sure they need to go that route he’s actually I misspoke he’s not a free agent at the end of the year he’s got another year on the contract uh that pays him $15 million next season uh which if if you’re going to trade for him that’s what you be on hook for next season it’s going to cost Washington more because salary uh because of signing bonuses but that’s where it is for next year it’s 15 million so probably he’s probably off the list because it’s a it’s beyond this season um but also need wise I’m not sure yeah I don’t know if they do either I they’re hoping that that uh Martin anzar maybe on his way out but you know this is something we’re going to see here because they have reader for two years yeah yeah so I mean by the way the Lions don’t have a third round pick next year it could also be a 2026 third round pick or even a fourth round depending so uh just because they don’t have a third round next year doesn’t mean they can’t make a deal for any of these guys you know there’s always ways to work around and that’s the job of the front office [Music]

A stand up OLB edge rusher really doesn't fit the Lions.
Hopefully the cap space will be used to put quality players on the Lions practice squad. The Lions practice squad players can be elevated two times to the game day roster before they must be signed to the active roster. BH will cover for injury in this manner. Some players are looking for a paycheck without a season commitment at the end of their careers.
Lions shouldn't spend their cap space if they want this to last, theyre already one of tge best rosters in the nfl so why would it be smart to mortgage their future when they can roll cap space into the future with one of the best teams already
Brad holmes isnt as near sighted as the fans and local media. I fully tgink hes rolling cap unto next year and front loading some resigned players with the extra cap room so he can keep this core together for the next 5 years
I'm still waiting for an extension for McNeil. I'm concerned they're going to let him FA and if that happens and he keeps trending up good luck signing him. And then who do they replace him with? Onwuzurike? Martin? In other words they don't have a replacement ready to plug in if McNeil walks.
Mann Judon would be a match made in heaven for the lions right now. He will turn 32 before the season. But he still will get 10+ sacks, and be very helpful for some of these young guys they have.
I’d rather wait and see what James Houston can do when healthy 1st…
Their naive to not think how the csp rolls over to the next year, especially when you want to resign McNeil
The only player I would really care to add at this point would be for improving and/or adding depth at the safety position.
It’s so refreshing to hear 97.1 the ticket say something positive about the lions. I see they finally got rid of SOL.
The cap space is to pay our future not to keep signing one year contracts The Lions got that for every position it’s trying to figure out who to keep and pay at this point in time and I hate to say it if Jamo doesn’t give us A career best this year he might be on the chopping block when it comes to a payday
Injuries and other things will happen before the season begins and before the trade deadline. I'd wait and see. Needs will appear as desires will fade.
If Lions added Mack and Judon…Superbowl
Nothing wrong getting a few players for depth in case of injuries, hate to see all of this excitement and hard work be depleted because of bad luck
I don’t think Allen is available. But if he is, get him. He gave Ragnow fits last season.
