Mike Weir, born in 1970 and now a senior golfer, is Canada’s left-handed PGA professional golfer. As a child, he played hockey, Canada’s national sport, and has been left-handed ever since. He is said to have taken up golf at the age of 11 while working part-time at a nearby golf course, where he saw Jack Nicklaus during an exhibition match. Weir, who played golf with both hands until the age of 13, was an avid golfer who even wrote to Nicklaus, asking whether it was better to play left-handed or right-handed. Nicklaus replied, “If you are a good left-handed player, you can’t do anything. Don’t change it. Especially if it feels natural to you,” he wrote back, and Weir still keeps the letter framed at home. He turned professional in 1992 and experienced various wins on the Canadian Tour. He entered the PGA in 1998, and since his first win in 1999, he has recorded eight PGA wins, including the Masters Tournament in 2003.
Mike Weir has been appointed general manager of the 2024 Presidents Cup International team, to be held at The Royal Montreal Golf Club in Montreal, Canada, in September.

1970년생으로 이미 시니어골퍼에 접어든 Mike Weir는 캐나다의 대표적인 왼손잡이 PGA프로골퍼 입니다. 어릴적 그는 캐나다의 대표적 스포츠인 하키를 했으며 그때부터 왼손잡이 였습니다. 11살에는 근처의 골프장에서 파트타임으로 일을 했는데 그때 시범경기를 위해 클럽을 찾았던 잭니클라우스를 보고 골프를 시작했다고 합니다. 13세 때까지 양손을 모두 사용해 골프를 쳤던 위어는 잭 니클로스에게 ‘왼손으로 치는 것이 좋은지, 아니면 오른손으로 치는 것이 좋은지’를 알려달라고 편지를 보내기도 했던 열성 골퍼였고 잭은 “왼손잡이로 좋은 선수라면 아무것도 바꾸지 마세요. 특히 그게 당신에게 자연스럽다면요.”라고 답장을 보냈고 지금도 그 편지를 액자에 넣어 집에 보관하고 있다고 합니다. 1992년 프로로 전향한그는 캐나다 투어에서 각종우승 경험을 했으며 1998년 PGA에 입성했고 1999년 첫우승이후 2003년 마스터스오픈 우승등 PGA통산 8승을 기록하고 있습니다.
Mike Weir는 오는 9월 캐나다 몬트리올의 The Royal Montreal Golf Club 에서열리는 2024 프레지던츠컵 인터내셔널 팀 단장으로 선임 됐습니다.
