welcome to the Roa wire fantasy podcast uh I’m Jeff Ericson I got my guest Casey Bubba today we’re going to be talking Giants we’re going to be talking trade deadline we’re going to be talking early catchers all coming up on the roadwire fantasy baseball [Music] podcast hey everybody Welcome to the RO of wire Fantasy Baseball podcast as always we are brought to you by the good Folks at DraftKings and their pick six app uh as well as home run forecast uh today I’m with Casey Bubba uh you can catch him AKA Bubba aka the bench with Bubba Bubba Bloom pod fantasy pros baseball HQ did I forget anything there uh I don’t I don’t know it’s too much it’s all that’s the bottom line there too much you can find me anywhere you you find Fantasy Baseball I’m probably somewhere around there exactly you’ll find him at first pitch Arizona in November um we’ll play some golf hopefully hopefully it won’t conflict with XFL this year so I get to have my cake and eat it too uh the San Francisco Giants let’s just jump right there because I always associate you as my go-to guy when it comes to the giants either you or Justin Mason but I want to go with you today uh they are 38 and 42 three and a half games back from the last wild card um it’s been an interesting uh run so far uh in this muddled NL Wild Card race yeah that’s the nicest way you can probably put it on on a Thursday morning because it’s been put together with uh you know duct tape and Barb Wire it feels like everyone’s getting hurt everyone we’re seeing a lot of players we never thought we’d see this year and somehow they’re three and a half games out which seems close but I’m very pessimistic on this season right now yeah I think most Giants fans are that way um the first thing I always notice is like it’s hard for them to find people to take their money uh at least at the top end I mean they can get that second tier free agian they can get the Matt Chapman jeang Huli unfortunately who’s out for the season but they they’ve missed out on Aaron judge they missed out on shohi they missed out on all the other big names I’m sure they’ll they’ll throw in for one so to this offseason and he would be awesome for them but I I’m guessing they’re not going to be the favorite to land him either yeah I’m not holding my hopes too high like I’d love it I think any Giants fan would love to see one sto here he’d hit a million balls into the Cove I wouldn’t doubt that at all right but um he’s going like all these guys do and like I get it financially he’s going to one of the big markets on either New York or LA I’m guessing so he won’t be and I think is San Francisco’s a big Market but like you said they they can’t land the big fish it’s very very frustrating I wonder do you think the ballpark has something to do with it there that hitters don’t want to challenge that ballpark or is it something else uh because obviously like the market is great uh the the market size is great the the city is an amazing city um yeah why are they falling short that’s the million-dollar question because you know you think the mid-tier guys would be scared of the ballpark um a Wan so to an Aaron judge there’s no ballpark holding them in just it doesn’t matter where they’re going and um you know the judge one was really tough because he’s from like uh from Lyon over there kind of in the Fresno area so he was kind of close to San Francisco sure and that didn’t even help so the big gu shouldn’t matter in my opinion there’s something else under the surface that it’s either a ball Club situation or something I don’t know but it’s it’s not good and I don’t see it getting better anytime soon sadly no I I don’t either um I think maybe being the same division as the Dodgers doesn’t help either not help no you know they’ve got near infinite resources and they’re smart which is an annoying combination there but the Giants should be smart too I mean everyone thinks that farhan’s great um at least everyone did I don’t know if everybody thinks that now but uh I think that was the case at least one point in time yeah I have my in Far hand We Trust uh shirt in my closet that I bought about 3 years ago that I’ve worn maybe one since then no no it’s still there I’ve worn it the first pitch a couple years ago like I I love the guy I was very optimistic you mentioned Dodgers are smart he was one of the the cogs in the wheel in La when it got going so you figured he would have brought it with him and there there’s the the problem I think there’s more to it than just far hunt I think there’s the Larry bear situations there’s some other pieces to the puzzle that sure aren’t allowing them to flourish cuz when the Giants were good in 10 12 and 14 in 2000 for you young folks out there um it was all their pretty much draft picks it was posie it was bum gruner it was linum that was the big thing it wasn’t a ton of massive free agents they haven’t done it that way in years so that’s the problem yeah so for the uninitiated what’s the Larry bear situation he’s I believe he’s director of player operations or I don’t know he’s he’s not the general manager thank goodness but he seems to be have his hands in a lot of situations and he’s in a lot of the press conferences where any where faran is Larry bear is not far behind so I feel like there’s kind of a puppetry thing going on in San Francisco I might just be speaking because I’ve just been disgruntled for a few years watching this thing unfold but it seems like things have gotten worse the more power he has taken over yeah uh and that’s the thing sometimes we blame GMS but sometimes it’s it’s higher up on the food chain often the owner ownership level I I think that’s always an issue that comes with that whether it’s uh you know the Red Sox and you know them scaling back and then blaming the GM you know it’s always you know you know we do more with less the rays are doing that it doesn’t always work that way no it doesn’t you have to have phenomenal Player Development I I don’t the Giants isn’t great but I don’t think it’s bad I think it’s probably mid mid- tier so I wouldn’t blame it fully on that Razer are getting the job done in that regard so it’s it’s tough because they we see waves of Talent come through San Francisco but like you said is you need to have that big signing because they have the money to spend and they’ve shown they will to spend it so if you could put that with the young Talent this team could be pretty darn good and yeah I don’t know if you’ll ever catch the Dodgers but with all these Wild cards like we started the conversation with you don’t have to catch the Dodgers anymore you just got to get there and then just be better than them for three or four games yeah exactly hopefully you’re not going to have to have a modification on that t-shirt that says this did not age well on the back or something like that but yeah I don’t know we’ll see there’s a reason why I don’t get too many uh uniforms and t-shirts there but although I do need to get an LA one I can’t believe I don’t have an LA one yet yeah you are like we talked Reds on my show earlier in the preseason and the way you’re talking glowingly about you definitely need I think that would be great for your XFL supplemental draft is or whatever you’re in Arizona you need a new Ellie Jersey for that draft yeah I think I might I think I might so we we’ll see what I can do about that let’s look at the starting pitching rotation I mean I think that’s where it’s been as particularly challenging this year I mean so many injuries so many false starts it’s a mcgyver rotation this is where the chicken wire and duct tape comes in uh but Logan web’s been fine but Snell I think this what is his fourth trip to the ilil already and we’re still in June Kyle Harrison’s on the I Keaton wi coming back soon uh Robbie Ray hasn’t gotten started yet uh but you know is going to be coming soon but meanwhile they’re getting through with all sorts of just modifications and uh it’s got to be tough it is tough because that was one of the op the the the bright spots to start the year because Harrison looked good early Keaton wind looked good early like Hicks has been good but I’ve even mentioned it on recent shows of mine that he’s not getting to five innings often because he’s striking out more guys which he wasn’t doing earlier but he’s not going deep in the game so that it’s just taxing Bullpen after taxing Bullpen day over and over again yeah and it’s become difficult but like you said there are you know resources coming we saw Hayden Birdsong throw on Wednesday night you know how much do we get out of him for the season is this like the Harrison situation again where he looks good early he’s young but then the league figures him out we’ll see but he looks pretty good overall Robbie Ray did make his first Rehab start this past Sunday through two innings I believe in Sacramento he’s still going to need a few but they’re they’re targeting Robbie Ray about little after the All-Star break into July which would be way ahead of what I expected from Robbie Ray and Alex Cobbs on the similar path as long as we a millionth setback once again with him so in reality we could get a cob Ray and Snell after the All-Star break in some window that would be tremendous because like krco said on the broadcast Wednesday night that these young kids just need to help them tread water for like two more weeks and they might have some help coming and then then you can make a run you never know yeah and they can do the proverbial are injured guys coming back is our trade deadline acquisition uh thing there but uh we’re going to talk to them a little bit more uh question in the chat on Twitter are we talking prospects it’s going to be more of a focus today on the big league level uh we’ll talk maybe some prospects that could come and go we’ll talk some Giants prospects a little bit uh but if you want the true prospect podcast that’s on Wednesdays with James Anderson uh make sure to tune in for that and he did a prospect mailbag podcast yesterday one of the best in business and always you can just tweet at James too real Jr Anderson you get a lot of good stuff from him uh so thanks for that question there Jeff uh let’s talk about uh C couple more things uh Logan web is is he what we are we getting the benefit of the bargain right now um are you getting what you expected out of him yeah and it started off uh kind of up and down but he’s been electric he’s been at least considering the rest of the rotation let’s put it that way um he’s given you seven Innings most days so he’s eating Innings which like I said earlier these young kids are not helping the bullpen so he’s doing that he’s he’s worn a couple just to get to Seven to help the bullpit out yeah he is the epitome of an Ace and he’s young and he’s always kind of had that to me Matt Kane elk as a former giant if you go in that in that regard he he’s getting the strikeouts what he can get him um but more importantly it’s the seven Innings and the ratios are still pretty strong overall All Things Considered especially with a couple of the rough starts earlier in the year so yeah I I love what Logan webs doing and he’s definitely taken on more of a leadership role not just in the fantasy role but in the clubhouse you’ve heard him talk a lot more he’s taking these young kids under his wing like he’s doing everything as a Giants fan you would hope for in fantasy manager should be appreciating what he’s doing as well indeed we’re going to be talking a lot more Giants but first got a quick note from one of our sponsors our good friends at DraftKings did and their pick six app New York and Connecticut eligibility and restrictions apply void were prohibited see terms at pix six. draftkings.com promos all right I’m here with Casey Bubba and the dogs like that one there they’re they’re big six pick players there but uh let’s talk about something that has gone right for them that’s Helio Helio Ramos not the uh the biggest Prospect coming into the season for the Giants but the one that’s come through the most right now yeah he’s been outstanding it’s it’s one of those things we’ll talk about the other one that people were talking about in a bit but um Elliot was Elliot Ramos was a big big uh Prospect at one point then in recent years kind of fizzled out to to some and then I laugh he Fizzles out because he’s 24 years old it was it was a tough term for me and he’s come on and looked great his hit tools phal um he’s striking out a little more the thing that scares me is and things people will point to a ton a lot of uh chasing out of the Zone a lot of swing and Miss in that regard but he also I think he’s almost too patient at times also which is weird to say with what I just said about swinging too much because he walks a ton like he walks a lot so he’s he’s a good young hitter that just continues to get better and he’s also playing great defense which which was one thing people didn’t expect out of him which has kept him with the Giants and kept him like he’s played every position in the Outfield basically yeah so I I love what we’re getting from ell Ramos yeah and the funny thing is if it weren’t for injuries to Jang Huli and uh you know you know Luis moo struggling both offensively and defensively Ramos might not have gotten that full-fledged opportunity I mean they had Slater they have ymy they have conforto they have Soler doesn’t really play the field that much but they had all these guys in front of them yet he F you know nature found a way yeah and that’s kind of why I wasn’t super high on the MOs or Ramos situations early in the season because the Giant will stick with their olds that’s what they do time and time again so I kept saying there’s like there’s no room at the end what are we it’s just not going to happen and then like all good things injuries take place and it happens so I think we might see Slater might be coming to an end pretty soon and Yas might hopefully get traded we’ll talk about that later so there might be run for these guys for the rest of the year yeah let’s talk about uh the other you know the other outfielders are Luis MOS you know had the best week of his life when he got caught up on a lot of people’s benches um and then everybody picked him up and he started to struggle there after that he got sent down he is back up now can he take the next step can it be a case there where he gets a little bit more exposure to Big League pitching and you know uses his patience to take the next step 100% again I would said Ramos is 24 maos is 22 um yeah these these kids that’s Growing Pains there’s not and especially this year we should we’ve seen it from everybody there hasn’t been a prospect really that’s come up and flourished out the gate uh montos went back to Triple A started hitting again just fine had another week in Triple A similar to that week you mentioned on everybody’s bench with the Giants got the call back up um he strikes out less than 10% in the majors in both Sten he’s had which is beautiful to see he has Gold Glove level defense that will get him starts in center field and I think I think initially Ramos is going to be the more power driven guy but Matos has plenty as well Matos will run more I think we’re going to get to see a bunch of them in the second half and both will bring some fantasy viability that’ll especially in the five Outfield leagues will be pretty nice do you think it’ll be more like Matos and Center Ramos and right is that how they’re going to play that yeah Ramos will be right or left depends on where they want to put conforto um and if if he’s even on the field because it’s you know been a couple weeks but um but uh yeah MOS should be the everyday center fielder and that’s why many thought Ramos would go back down initially and Matos would stay but Ramos has played center fine so ideally they’ll Matos Center Ramos and a corner infield or Corner Outfield oh another player that’s worked out pretty well this year is uh Patrick Bailey uh if you look at what he’s done in the leite from Year One the Year too uh it it’s been an impressive growth at the plate and considering he was a guy that he also made a splash in his first couple weeks in The Bigs at the plate and then faded a little bit pretty hard at the end of the year last year uh but he’s looking every bit the part of someone who could be a lineup regular which you know in contrast to Joey Bart and how everybody expected him to develop it’s a pleasant surprise to see this it is because the Joey Bart was supposed to be the next Pat the next Buster posie did not pan out very well uh Bailey’s kind of turning into the next Buster posie weirdly enough but that’s going to never happen but you know what I’m trying to say um I liked bayy a lot last year and like you said he kind of fizzled out but what I really liked about bayy was hearing him his after the season interviews and he discussed how drained he was between playing summer ball or winter ball then coming in and playing the miners and he’s never and then the bigs he’s never played so many games and you saw like if you looked at any chart it started going down as you got tired later in the season but the Giants wanted to stretch him out to get him ready for the future and it’s showcasing now he’s a switch amazing defense people look at the Giants can’t stop a base stealer that’s on the pitchers folks it is not on Patrick Bailey I remember that last year yeah remember phenomenal in that regard yeah so I love Patrick Bailey and it was one of those preseason things where he was free in drafts no one wanted Patrick Bailey and it was one of those if uh if you were stuck looking for a late catcher too it was really really nice he was free in late April you know I mean he was free especially in twelves even but even in 15s you could often find him I used him as my Bon nailor replacement in one case there smart move smart move we all had to we’ll get to that in a minute but yes we had we will yes we will unfortunately all right Giants buyers or sellers at the trade deadline what do you think the realest in me is hoping sellers but this team always does this like they’ve won already two in a row against the Cubs they’ll find a way to be within like two or three games still and they’ll convince everybody like you said oh we got these three pitchers coming back and we got all these things and they’ll go trade for like two relievers because our Bullpen taxed and then in September they’ll be 12 games out and it’ll be rinse and repeat that’s kind of where I’m seeing it going I hope they sell though I like trade yoursky trade anybody outside of like the big boy the big prospects and and see what happens yeah uh but that that you know like the Blue Jays that almost means that your philosophy and building your team went wrong um and then it leads to GMS wondering about their job and are are they going to trust you know Farhan with the rebuild after he’s done the Bild that didn’t work you know that’s that’s the tough part there nope 100% And Farhan his leash is short right now so he I it’d be tough for him to force a rebuild like you’re saying yeah they might we might see Hayden bird song uh soon in fact uh we saw him last night last night that’s right that’s right and he uh did not get the decision but he’s one of their top prospects he looked good yeah they got bird song and wizen Hunt who you might see making a bigger impact in the in the short run here or I should say in the long run um but what else is coming do they have any other like top prospects that we should be on the lookout for yeah but they’re a little ways away still uh Bri Eldridge has been moved up to doua now I believe he was crushing single a uh very very talented bat to look for there um they have a couple other guys a young pitchers uh Bednar just came up to I believe he’s in double A now too maybe got the call the tripa a recently I know he moved levels most of these guys are little ways away though or probably another year or so from happening but I’m very excited about Eldridge this kid can hit and um it could be a future corner infielder for the Giants that they really really need yeah they they do need that uh they they it didn’t work out who’s the shortstop Luciano is the the short stop that’s not working out at all that’s been bad uh like this this Prospect class you know and maybe I can Su and maybe I was premature in saying that Matos was in that class of slightly disappointing Giants prospects that we like they kind of rivaled the the Padres for a while in terms of a farm system and it just didn’t really work out the way they expected yeah I’ll never forget that first pitch Arizona two years ago Home Run Derby behind home plate sitting next to James Anderson and we’re just you know talking about whatever we do it first pitch as you know and um I said hey shoot me straight because I’ve had him on my show a t dozen times we talked many times and I all a couple years ago you said this Giants Prospect group was top five in all of baseball everywhere you looked I said it’s bad James tell me how bad is all it’s not getting any better either like basically it’s done you’re going to get maybe one guy out of this and he’s been dead on as usual and it’s been it when he said those words is when I really just turned the switch off and walked away oh no no because like you said it was so promising like we had this whole thing going we had all this money coming up and then boom went to Dynamite yeah unfortunately there boom goes the Dy but we’re not the Oakland Athletics so I don’t have to go to full Scott ginste and just disown the team I will still be a Giants fan sure sure they’re not going anywhere at least they’re not holding the city hostage or anything so you got that going for you which is nice exactly exactly we’re gonna talk uh Bubba’s early catcher philosophy but uh first quick quick other note podcast thanks for listening to bluewire ads we do appreciate them and we appreciate you I am Jeff Ericson I’m here with Casey buba you can catch him on Twitter at casy Bubba you or no I’m sorry I lied that’s just your screen name your your actual uh it’s your actual name that is uh your your your Twitter handle it’s and I always do this too it’s B dentrick uh that is uh the Twitter handle sorry about that it’s all good yeah I should know better but I don’t um I just know you as Casey Bubba that’s all it’s easy it’s a lot easier that way yeah um when I was listening to you and Ryan this offseason and I listened to like your live stream of the the mixed labor draft that we did uh you were an advocate for drafting catchers early at least getting that one of those top catchers um and I I think it’s I think it’s smart I think it it is I think it’s been it was a good year for that uh tell everybody your reasoning behind that first and then we’ll talk about what happened with it well I kept saying there’s like 12 catchers I would love to have them my roster and there was a clear top tier of like four or five I’ll be nice and say four or five catchers that some might just say it’s adley and William but uh you can go a little deeper to that if you it’s like the you know starting pitching philosophy moved to catcher because everyone’s talking about how deep catcher is but it still has a drop off yeah like and what I’ve compared in recent years because I’ve had to write the catcher preview in the fantasy blackbook for like five years now so I write about literally 50ish catch catchers every year you realize that um there’s a depth at catcher but it’s turning into almost running backs in football whereas committees a catcher and that’s where it gets tricky so in a world of Fantasy Baseball Jeff where we talk we want plate appearances plate appearances plate appearances well if you have a catcher only playing 80 games because the other guys playing 80 or it’s like 9070 or whatever you’re hurting yourself so these Elite catchers it’s not just production it’s the amount of bats they’re getting to give you that quality production so I wanted to make sure I was getting those guys that were locked into more playing time like an rb1 a catcher one and then you can go for these other guys later as your catcher two in leagues and whatnot so you advocated for that were you able to pull it off in most of your leagues most but this is the problem is you probably find out playing uh doing so much work that people hear read and whatnot is they know your strategies so people in drafts with me were uh picking me off from time to time which is made things fun but no it’s just you know how it goes um yeah I got a lot of I got a handful of William Contreras is who I liked I got a lot a lot of Yer Diaz who I liked quite a bit and then it was more I was peppering the Logan ooy Bon Naylor Ryan Jeffers of the world uh two out of the three worked really good early on now only one out of the three is working really well uh but the fact I have the Yer or the William with it you can kind of play the waiver wire for the catcher too if right and the the Yer narrative has kind of Chang too he was a disappointment early uh but if you all of a sudden you look up and he’s like a top 10 earning cat right now top 12 at least uh 271 s homers 40 RBI the 40 RBI is the thing too you know that’s halfway through the season you double that up just as a rough proxy you get 80 RBI from your catcher yeah you would take that you would if you told me at on on March 1 I can get 80 RBI from my nonc contrarious non rushman non Will Smith catcher I would take that and I I I wouldn’t I wouldn’t blink 100% And it’s the old narrative people said well if you take catcher early what are you passing on because maybe there’s an elite outfielder or this or that but you know as as we know that the player pool’s getting deep and you these Elite catchers do separate you from the pack when they produce the way they are right now yeah and it’s a caveat here too is we’re talking two catcher leagues for the most part yes and a one catcher League um I think the philosophy changes quite a bit um yes but Al Al maybe it doesn’t I mean you know maybe some people have experience uh doing well with an elite catcher and one catcher leagues I only play in like one or two one catcher leagues every year at most I don’t think I play in actually now I think about it and you mention that I’ve heard people say both sides that as you said it’s it makes the the elite catcher even more valuable because they can separate themselves from the pack more where I I usually treat them almost like a kicker or a punt a defense in fans in football where I’ll stream them if I have to like I’ll get a pretty good one but I’m not afraid to stream in a one catcher League see and see my cross sport comparison I compare it to tight ends you know you get the elite ones there yeah it’s worth getting you don’t pay up for the middle um because there’s not much because there’s not much separating Ryan Jeffers from Baylor versus Logan ohpp at least on draft day value turns out there is something separating him but Baylor man I got him in way too many leagues maybe you know I I I feel like I got the draft right and the player got it wrong no just kidding be there but B nether was my most rostered catcher so I I understand like he like he was I think I had Logan o hoppy in one fewer draft so they’re the same but I had V I was very high on him just like you were and um it’s a whole different approach of the plate this year compared to last year it’s a whole different baseball player it’s confusing but then it goes back to I’m touting how exciting I am for a 24y old Ramos a 22y old Matos Naylor’s young as well so he’s going through things like he’s got to learn and I very optimistic on his future I just don’t know when I’ll be ping back in on said future yeah and that’s just the thing too it’s like I maybe we should look a little closer at the organization and for our Q’s because last year it took them a while to to promote Naylor to the majors it took them a while to trust him playing time wise and even at even even at the end last year when he started hitting better when he started giving us the signs that we thought okay I want to get him this year he wasn’t playing like most starting catchers and they would still use Austin Hedges a lot much sure I should grin you know we we’d be grinding our te saying Austin hedges in there again ah but you know there there’s a reason you know teams teams are typically rational they do what is best for them and sometimes we we kind of think about what should be and how we insert our judgment in place of theirs occasionally with like the past eating Rockies it’s true we are smarter than them but um you know in most cases though it’s like come on you know we we there there’s stuff more to the story that we don’t realize usually yeah and like you said is they’re playing for real baseball we’re just fantasy guys having fun hoping for the best production possible Austin edgers is a really good defensive Catcher And they have a good pitching staff that and a young pitching staff it makes sense on paper like saying looking hindsight looking back at it but um it’s just frustrating knowing that they’re two different off well we thought they were two different offensive players maybe they’re closer than we thought but uh yeah that that that’s a good point on the the Guardians there so overall would you do this again would you continue to advocate for early catchers are you going to continue to add them next year oh 100% I got just been My Philosophy for a while it’s a like Toby has pocket aces I’ve always been a get your catcher early type guy at least one of them um I’ve never been a uh and DCs are draft in Old formats I get two because those two guys are so valuable out the gate um and James Anderson kind of taught uh put that into my mind a few years back and it’s really stuck with with going through there so I’m still a big geter catcher because it’s just what like William and adley and those guys are doing is gamechanging at the position and and sets you up so so nicely yeah that is I think you’re right about that and I don’t have any adley this year none zero neither do I I was so and this is my head in the sand with prospects and young players it’s like a problem of mine uh adley and this hurts to say gunar Henderson are not on any of my rosters um I was just bullish on both of them going forward this year yeah I have Gunner two one of them is a second chance League though so that doesn’t even really count because we drafted on May 1 you know and I’ve been lamenting all year about taking Lindor and Alonzo over Gunner at the turn in the main event I mean fortunately that the narrative changed a little bit that lindor’s hitting really well right now lonzo’s woken up but it’s going to be a long way before they could catch gunar and it’s not like gunar is remaining static and they’re G they’re just reaching to catch him he’s still pulling that that train still left the station is still moving so um that’s gonna be frustrating because if I was drafting again today Gunner would be a top 10 player and Lindor and Alonzo would be at the same spot I mean I think I don’t think they’re going any earlier they might even go later so uh that that’s the thing that’s a little frustrating about that but all right I got Sidetrack talking about trains and all that so let’s get back on the tracks here um next thing we want to talk about is just the the trade deadline uh it’s it’s coming up in about a month we’re starting to hear the initial conversations here and there um and my biggest problem is it’s a lot like last year uh that it’s a question of inventory last year we had like nine teams that were sellers who the heck is going to be available as a seller this year that’s the million-dollar question like you highlighted a bunch of teams it’s there’s so many teams still within quote unot quote strking distance of wild card spots that who’s going to be the ones to throw in the towels like you have your usual suspects the the bottom dwellers and you know your Marlins your Rockies if they ever figure out how to get rid of a prospect or sell a veteran for something not besides bucket of balls to the Cardinals for a third baseman um things along those lines is going to be interesting the white socks should continue to sell um the Jays are rumored to be selling which is interesting because there’s been some fun rumor like the idea that I saw Vlad Guerrero Jr going to the Astros is exciting for baseball and like didn’t even cross my mind at one point so yeah well they have a gaping hole at first Bas I mean it made total sense 100% sense well it’s so funny that two of the two of the elite teams in baseball although the Astros record is an elite yet but they’re considered an elite team the the Astros and the Yankees have major holes at first base right now with Rizzo out for a long term um and honestly Rizzo was not that good to begin with this year not as bad as a Jose [ __ ] was but you kind of close um so yeah it’s interesting to see that could be a market there uh I was I I thought we’d kind of go down some rosters you team by team and kind of talk about maybe who might some of the sellers be start with the obvious teams the Marlins I think are one that I think we we you know I think everybody knows they’re going to be sellers they already sold Luis Aras so we know that uh is that they’re they’re willing to sell I I’m trying to find others though I me the problem for them is like you know pitching is always in demand and Jesus Lardo would have been their their primary guy but he’s on the 60D yeah yeah that’s obviously that train like you said is not leaving the tracks now but and they need sted pitching period it’s it’s brutal right now the fact that they keep calling guys up not named Max Meyer though is interesting but that’s a whole another podcast for another day yeah um they have some relief pitchers that they can definitely like Tanner Scott I wouldn’t even AJ Puck’s probably on the agenda at some point in time the player I think that makes the most sense leaving Miami and you mentioned the New York Yankees need a first Bas Josh Bell would really do well in that ballpark yeah and and he would not cost a lot of money and not like the Yankees care that much but he would be the perfect just kind of rental fit at first base a switch hitter short porch I think that would be a fit for sure yeah um I I think Tanner Scott is as good as gone um I think he’s like that it’s like such an easy thing to try to sell a reliever um that it if they don’t do it they’ve really failed in their mission especially Scott who’s kind of a guy that you know he’s he’s a he’s a popup relief pitching you know stud for and he’s not even a stud because he walks too many guys but if you can’t sell him off then you’ve really failed your mission yep 100% on that one uh the Rockies we’ve talked about them before we’ve we’ve made fun of them before we’re gonna do so again um you know they’re the same team that you know decides that they’re going to extend Daniel Bard instead of trade him and that you know predictably blew up in their face do what do they have to sell right now um now if this was a smart fr franchise realize that they need to make a lot of uh Moves In Pieces you either try to sell a Brennan Rogers or Nolan Jones and get a lot back they won’t they won’t I’m just gonna stop people from yelling at me right out the gate I would look to move one of those if I was them because otherwise these are all bench players for most contending teams and so it’s it’s would be bench depth they don’t have a lot of pitching their bats aren’t great I guess you could try to sell high like on a cal quantrol because he’s actually been quasi decent this year and some team might need a fifth starter that’d be the biggest one and many teams need a fifth starter even a fourth in many cases so yeah I think they should absolutely try I think almost anything that’s not nailed down it’s you know unless they have like four years of control or something like that but yeah yeah and that’s just the problem is you know you know no one’s trading for Charlie Blackman No One’s Gonna you no one’s trading for Chris Bryan you know in his medical plan um they’re just they’re just not going to do that so you know it limits the options that they have the white socks they’ve already sold off and the case of Dylan CE and other key players already they are historically bad um but they still have guys they can still sell they still have Tommy fam for instance who I’ve I’ve already seen as you know that guy’s signed to be traded no matter where he goes um and then there’s the obvious Garrett crochet or Eric fetty should they try to sell them yeah I’m surprised Tommy F was not in an Atlanta Braves uniform yet I figured he would have been there the second they cut into Ronald there I hear too so he’d like that yeah yeah he would like that quite a bit uh it’ be quite the stabbing situation um Robert Luis Robert getting rumored is is interesting yeah because the Dodgers have been talking about him because why not the Dodgers just have every fun piece in the puzzle like the Dodgers have talked about the crochet lubob combo which as a Giants fam is not good I’ll ask you this question the crochet thing makes me curious because they’ve already talked about limiting his in Innings he’s already thrown so many what’s a contending team expecting to really get a Garrett crochet are they trying to pull Michael King here or or is this for the future so much more than this season that’s my confusion yeah I think that’s a yeah I think there’s a reason why the White Sox announced they’re kind of think about managing crochets workload um and so that they can maybe further a trade CH opportunity here a little bit there um they can stitch This Together somehow and uh you know find a way to put you know you know get a get a deal done but I I I do think it’s going to be pretty tricky uh you know yeah I think you’re right though I think it it has to be viewed as a two to threee proposition I mean fact is I mean there are years of control to be had here too it’s not like he’s a free agent this year so in fact I’m trying to look up to see you know when he very affordable uh I got him right here for you he will be all these new player pages are killing me yeah so he’s he’s a free agent 2027 not he’s are eligible for the first time next year so still pretty still pretty cheap so yeah that’s not bad that would be beautiful and and blue and in La it’ be great there yeah uh he you know he could go to you hey the Giants could go for him too for that hey man if the that’s that’s the kind of stuff that would get me excited Jeff that would turn the beginning of this podcast all around if they made Moves like that let’s go but I just don’t know how or when they’ll do that yeah looking at other obvious sellers there’s the A’s and the angels um I think you could look at them also um angels I mean they they they’ve done the selloff before the A’s I mean it’s all about one player and it’s Mason Miller um I’m not sure who else that they have to try to sell at this point in time um maybe someone will trade for like a JP Sears or something of that nature but are they even interested in doing that so or or maybe Brent Rooker is another gu say Rooker Rooker is a guy that I don’t see being on their team after the deadline yeah I could see that um angels too I mean Angels actually have some pitching they could try to trade you know like a like uh Tyler Anderson should be dealt you know take advantage of his big SE his best season ever um but everybody but front offices get baseball prospectus and fan graphs and and you know Savant too so they they know um they’re smarter than us yeah they might be they may even have their own proprietary metrics who knows rumor I’ve heard rumors um Rockies don’t obviously no no the Rockies it gets lost in the altitude yeah yeah but they’ve got their own algorithm um Goes Up in Smoke yeah nice um so that that’s that’s pretty much the extent of the obvious sellers now I think the other the interesting part is who’s going to join the ranks of the sellers who’s going to you know who’s going to fall off or who’s going to see it as a Arbitrage situation there where there’s not that many sellers so they want to jump in and try to maybe take advantage of the market that’s I think that’s the more interesting question 100 perc and that’s teams like we’ve already mentioned Toronto’s already kind of hinting at it which would be one and they have some big pieces unlike those uh down teams we were talking about Toronto can actually make some splashes and bring some return for for their future and I that that’s called smart baseball it’s annoying for fans but that would be good um the Washington Nationals actually have more pieces I think people give them credit for and that could be fun like we’ve like everyone mentions finnean that makes sense it wasn’t too long ago were the Nats traded multiple relievers in one year so could Harvey could go too if if all is said and done but but they have some younger bats that they can maybe try to make some moves for and deal out there like Jesse Winker is hot get him out of here while you can stuff like that um the Nets could be a surprising team as well then yeah yeah Pittsburgh’s always a confusing one because Pittsburgh should have traded deid benar years ago and they still haven’t so I don’t right well and the thing is Pittsburgh’s you know they’re in the race they’re two and a half games out in the wild card they just took two out of three from the Reds they’ve got this fun young rotation although we got news today that Jared Jones isn’t going to pitch this week they’re gonna you know Skip him this week I don’t know if that’s just a there you know rest sort of thing or if there’s really something wrong I know his performance has dropped off a little lately so so uh they’ll be uh one of those lynchpin teams too yeah and that’s what worried me with Jones and his last few starts you’ve seen some things changing between velocity and just overall performance control has been off for for Jones but that’s a different situation but uh yeah they they are interesting and just you kind of go look at teams like that like your Reds like they’re in it do you our Reds yes our Reds yes I trust me we’ve talked about that love some Reds but even the Cubs like you know they’re good but they have some massive holes so there’s a lot of these teams seems that given the right offer a good front office needs to I think suck it up and be like hey um this is is the way to do things go get a couple prospects because the Cubs made Moves Like Pete Crow Armstrong’s young I’ve watched him hit all week so far and I haven’t been very optimistic at that approach but he’s young things can change so these these teams are are the ones that are close now a move or two this year could help for the future type story I bet the Cubs would make Drew Smiley available I hear he’s really good at bringing in a ninth inning uh against couple of the good right-handed hitters I thought he was great I think he did a phenomenal job in in that game so yeah I get it was the Willie Mays game and all that but my God give Justin steel a a break here zero win so far holy cow yeah I I’m with you on the steel train and I’m just going to let you know myself and Ryan we appreciate your struggling with the win tweets because Ryan and I text back and forth about our anger with the win category because it’s been so bad and then you started tweeting about it recently and then we’ve been enjoying you jumping into the party because it’s been it’s been very frustrating this season yeah acts to save while we’re at it too but uh I don’t know I’m just it was frustrating I had five pitchers on Monday leave with the win in the main event five starting pitchers going all left with the lead one of them was match up against each other in the case of Hal versus Basset I got one win to show for it there it was Tanner BBY of all people against the uh against the Orioles um had amazing ratios and all that but it was really frustrating Bullpen after Bullpen after bullpen and coughing it up uh then of course Tyler Anderson just gaks all over the place the next day and still gets a win so that just shows what how how fair life is yeah that’s why I laugh like I had Kevin Gosman go and he struggled through six three or four runs and still got the win and I’m with you i’ steel the night before and some other guys and you’re just banging your head against the wall every day trying to figure this one out yeah exactly um it really is it’s it’s super challenging there uh tangent to our conversation Keith asked what’s the outlook for Luis Robert Jr the rest of the way he has struck L since coming back from the I think he’s a quick pickup if he has dropped in your league I saw he has been dropped in some leagues I think it’s just a matter of time I’m with you he he’s Young when he’s been healthy that could be a thing all if he’s healthy if they rushed him back what it is but uh when healthy L Luis Roberts very very good and you should be very happy if he’s available on your waiver wire right now yeah especially given the state of outfielders in baseball right now uhhuh 100% there’s a lot of good streaming options for fourth and fifth outfielders but Elite outfielder is not very good yeah even in a teamer I’d snap him up real quick and I’m in a 15 teamer and be like a Mana from Heaven because I right now I’m rostering uh you know we lost Stanton in the main so we’ve got Mitch hanar we’ who hasn’t played yet this week we got Colton cower who’s not getting as many starts uh we got Adam Duval who’s not getting as many starts that that that storyline seems to be coming to a nasty end uh I’m gonna be in the market for outfielders this week and it’s going to be pretty ugly yeah when Ramone laurano takes your playing time that’s when you’re kind of like Yep this might be the end of the road folks that’s that’s not good so he the direct correlation to when aunia got hurt and Duval hitting worse because we picked him up too exactly at that time got a homer on the very first day uh after that that we picked him up and it’s like okay it’s like 2021 all over again and then we realized why he’s been bouncing around between teams after that so uh it has not been like 2021 narrator but yeah it’s it that’s the frustrating part where some of those those bats because you see that optimism and soler’s like been good this year’s better than Duval it’s the same thing where’s the 40 home run Solair like with all this stuff we get those one season with these guys and Duval’s given a great example of that as well yeah he that was that’s another giant signing too it’s like you settle for the second tier guy and he’ll have his hot streak at some point in time but and that’s the thing and you know talk about a guy who is is a tough sign because he doesn’t add any defensive value whatsoever no um you know you’re kind of pigeon hold that uh there into like what he can contribute to a team and then you put him in a ballpark where his power doesn’t play as well it’s it’s kind of annoying it is and he really struggled early he’s at least hitting like 285 in June so he’s showing some signs of Life of making good contact now he needs to figure out how to put the ball over the fence again that’d be pretty nice exactly do you have any strategies that you do like in advance of the trade deadline anything you recommend to people as you start to see the trade rumors go and all that is anything that you like to do around trade deadline time um it it all depends like with all the injuries this year it’s trick but if you can stash this is the time to stash so if you can speculate say you are a team that needs saves like if you don’t need saves Don’t Force the handle but if you need saves start looking at the teams we talked about like the Martins might not win more than 10 more games but who’s going to take over from Tanner Scott and kind of go down like Hunter Harvey’s a phenomenal pickup right now if you’re in that boat situations like that and then also go and look at uh some of these teams like say the Jays say they do trade Vlad or bashk um these are Big ifs these are Big ifs but like who are these guys you can get for a dollar now uh go to some other teams and look like if the white socks you know it’s pretty Barren in those cabinets but just you know somebody’s going to get a chance somebody benefits from all this so so look at that angle yeah if your league allows for pickups of minor Leaguers the other thing I like to do is try to find like the elite minor Leaguers that are going to get that cup of coffee that two months at the end of the season there either on a contending team because they need the help like Brooks Lee on Minnesota or on non-c contending team so they get their version of Gunner Henderson getting a taste in the major sometimes they hit the ground ground running and if you can get them before they get the call it’s it’s a whole lot more affordable T Wars you can do that nfbc you cannot and it’s a great Point like we’re going to see later today on Thursday David Festa is going to make his start for Minnesota that’s been rumored for weeks like hey we want to get him you could have picked him up a while ago could be enjoying this um that’s where you know you mentioned I’m not the biggest Prospect guy but James Anderson is and um I look at his top 400 a lot for those kind of reasons like what what guys might be coming up later because that is the new trend you mentioned the Corbin Carol the um the Gunner Henderson they’re going to bring them all up at some point just so they can keep that eligibility for a rookie next year and they’ll be a flourish of them coming later yeah absolutely so if you want to if you have the roster space uh it’s a good time to play speculation game specul can I ask one question of use in your Reds yes of course what are we doing with Noel V Marte well what are the Reds gonna do that’s the big question yeah that’s why I’m asking what are we doing not producing well right now it’s certainly isn’t uh I have them stashed um on a couple of leagues yahooo friends and family I have them um I I I believe in the player uh looks like that he’s going to rejoin the team and he is gonna join the team today in St Louis so sweet I’m I’m kind of surprised to be honest there because he has not hit he hit 151 he got on base at a 151 clip he slugged 170 at Louisville he had one extra base hit no walks and 15ks uh it was bad I mean it’s his spring training against AAA pitchers that are literally in midseason in form um I think he will struggle initially I would add him but not start him it’ be my play and because I think he’s still going to need some more ramp up time um there was a quote from like David Bell saying they get reports on his progress that doesn’t have anything to do with the numbers and they like those and all that uh we’ll see um I I you know I I I don’t know I’m not I’m not buying it so much there but uh we’ll see uh I I do buy the bat in the long term though I think he’s legit a legit prospect it’s just remember like how many times we’ve seen players sign as free agents late right and then they come back in mid-season and they’re overmatched um I think that’s GNA happen here with Marte and then by September he might be good so I don’t know I mean I’m kind of talking myself out of not even adding him right now now that I’m thinking about it there that it might be another month uh what are you doing I I’m trying I’ve been promoting ad and stash as much as possible because I’m with you the talent is outstanding and I drafted him everywhere before he got busted so I had a lot of shares early on um so I’m very optimistic but I’m also like you’re I’m like stepping back and like you’re saying uh the this recent production spring training I think it’s gonna be a slow ramp up for Marte but I’m I’m a big fan of overall and if you can stash him I’d be stashing for sure yeah and the red season is just a disaster right now and you know the the problem is like CES is out for the year mlan you know if this if they’re not contending maybe they don’t bring him back this year uh fredel keeps going in and out of the lineup there it’s not the season they anticipated happing um and you can anticipate everything going right but more than the average number of things going wrong has happened for them and that’s the problem yep 100% it’s it’s been yeah Fry’s disappointed uh candelario’s playing great but he’s got that hip injury that’s goingon to probably our hamstring injur is goingon to bug him forever so yeah yeah collapsed yep yeah it’s slash got exposed SL you know by the way uh Maya culpa of the Guardians I I was kind of harsh on them for giving away B and giving away Nolan Jones and those two narratives have changed this year not that they got a whole lot in return for either player and it still is probably a mistake but it’s not as bad as it once looked um so yeah same same thing with the Cardinals Richie Palos didn’t really blow up in their face so uh Tyler O’Neil kind of did but kind of did yeah yeah it’d be nice if O’Neal had some Runners on base every time he homered but the king of the solo home run that’s an impressive stat he’s going to get keep racking up it looks like don’t think I can blame him though necessarily I think a lot of times it’s who’s on base in front of him but Rafael Des is in front of him cleaning up the bases too so that’s that makes things tricky absolutely absolutely that’s a whole another podcast yeah but uh rumor has it you do those um tell everybody when they can hear uh all your podcasts I do at least one episode of bench with Bubba a week sometimes two but the first one’s always uh I
