in today’s episode of what did Liv golf do now we look into the 2025 Ridder Cup and the situation of Liv golf players entering the following year now if it seems like this channel is obsessed with the Saudi backed outfit I assure you that couldn’t be further from the truth instead live golf has single-handedly changed the face of golf as we know it from splitting the sport in Twain to battling the PGA for the top spot to nicking some of the best golfers from the old guard there’s been an ugly Civil War in the World of Golf for years now only fairly recently some semblance of peace was achieved with a merger even then some bad blood remains towards the newcomer no one better embodies this sentiment than veteran Ridder cup golfer Sir Nick Faldo who firmly believed that European golfers who signed for the Saudi project should be excluded from participating in the Ryder Cup captain or player they may be in his words they shouldn’t be there because they’ve gone off and you’ve got to move on but are live golf players indeed cut off or is this all a case of mismanaged anger let’s find out mess imminent before Liv golf’s inaugural event in June 2022 the newcomer had already succeeded in tempting and luring away several bigname players from the PGA Tour the fact that multiple key figures didn’t mind switching sides despite warnings of dire repercussions was both shocking and empowering for the rest of the PGA players one of the consequences threatened was a potential ban from the Ridder Cup this seriously threatened some def factors such as a trip of the best players from Europe Lee Westwood Sergio Garcia and Ian polter Westwood was one of the first to address the prospect of being kicked out of the Ridder cup stating it’s something I have to take into account a Ridder cup ban I’m not sure about the playing days I’m 50 next April captaincy could be in Jeopardy as well but Ian pretty much covered it all what I will say is that myself and Ian pter have been members of the PGA Tour while we’ve been on the European tour and that’s had no effect in the past on whether people have been captains live golf is another tour so why should it be any different although an outright ban was never entirely enforced defectors faced some consequences more on this later in the video when players leave the first signs of consequences came when the PGA Tour and DP World Tour found themselves at loggerheads with Liv golf what followed next was a series of legal disputes mostly about playing rights and how Liv golf was disrupting the sport the answer for the DP World Tour was quite simple find affecting players and suspend their license as Brash as that might seem the tour had good reason for this line of action a group of Revel players requested conflicted event releases to avoid any form of consequence 9 months into the dispute Sports resolutions an arbitration panel ruled in favor of DP World Tour stating that the organization was within its rights to sanction players who breached its code of conduct several defecting players were refined 100,000 lb and inhibited from participating in the Scottish open about 12 players appealed this decision others namely Lee Westwood Ian polter and Sergio Garcia simply quit their tour memberships but not every player had the option to quit or pay a fine Henrik Stenson then Ridder Cup captain was relieved of his duties after being approached by the Saudi backed project the swed was only 4 months into the job when he was sacked Stenson had just accepted the offer to join West W and the rest of Europe’s Elite golfers in switching to live the higher ups at Team Europe simply had none of that Since switching allegiances Stenson has pocketed a cool 7.3 million pounds in prize winnings but getting the boot from tge Ridder cup remains a sore spot for the former Scottish open champion in July he disclosed to the media that he still felt disappointed in how things unfolded over a year later with Team Europe star players now plying their trade at Liv golf one more consequence Looms over them they could no longer represent their continent in match play events due to their severed ties with DP World Tour B real or dramatic the idea that live players could not participate in the Ryder Cup was taken out of context with FDO calling for bands and Rory melroy’s premature calls for the rules to be changed rumors began circulating about a potential loophole that live players could exploit to join the biannual competition guy Kennings the chief executive of DP World Tour was quick to clear the rumors insisting that players like tiell Hatton and John ROM didn’t need a loophole to participate in the Ryder Cup they were eligible by virtue of adhering to the rules of the tour in Kennings words it’s not a loophole because those are the rules we’ve always had and those are the rules we are going to continue to apply all suspensions will count and you have to serve them and the guys who’ve analized this in detail have said if they do it the right way there is no reason why they can’t play in the Ryder Cup we’re not going to change anything on that basis rules are rules and they apply for every member we’re not in a position to be changing rules that we’ve had to go to court to defend melroy who may have helped fan the Flames of misinformation earlier later admitted to his error he agreed with kings that Hatton and Rah didn’t need a rule change so long as they were still members of the DP World Tour and adhered to the rules of playing at least four tour events every season while Rah and Hatton might easily Waltz into the next Ridder cup the same cannot be said for team Europe’s defectors who quit their memberships or were sacked as is the case of Henrik Stenson Lee Westwood Ian polter and Sergio Garcia that said the chance of RAM and Hatton participating in the Ryder Cup doesn’t mean they get a straight ticket to the event besides adhering to the rules they are also expected to earn qualification points through major championships they may also be at risk of suspensions and fines for participating in live tournaments without due conflicting event releases Kennings describes this situation best if you don’t get a release there are sanctions so a player must accept those sanctions and if he accepts the penalties there is no reason why a player who has taken Live membership and maintained his DP World Tour membership could not a qualify or B be available for Ryder Cup selection it requires a player to work within the rules but the truth is that those rules have been looked at and tested everything is done in a fair reasonable and proportionate way so there is no reason why anything needs to change it is wrong to think John ROM has written himself out of the riter cup people instantly thought we would have to change the rules but actually we don’t if Jon follows the procedures in place there is no reason why he would not be eligible for the 2025 Ryder Cup is there a catch something about guy Kennings talking about the need to protect the Ridder cup stirred rumors that the newly minted DP World Tour chief executive could be hinting at potentially blocking live golf players from competing in the event but that couldn’t be further from the truth if anything Kennings is statements defend Ramen hatton’s right to play in the biannual event in his words I’m the least impartial person when it comes to talking about the Ridder cup for me all I want to do is make sure as one of the many things we do is protect the Ridder cup to be custodians of an event as good as that which isn’t just important for golf but is important for sport in itself is something you’ve got to take very very seriously and so absolutely I want to make sure we Elevate everything make the tour better and we are make the Ridder cup better you follow the rules as they are but we’ve got to build from Rome to New York to Ireland where the match is set to be staged at a d manner in 2027 in a different interview Kennings further explained the loophole and eligibility dilemma pointing out the misconception surrounding the eligibility criteria for the 2023 Ridder cup according to him the reality is is that under the current system if a player is European and is a member of the DP World Tour and abides by the rules in place he is eligible beyond the rumors and half-truths the terms of participating in the Ryder Cup appear to be pretty cut and dry additionally players who leave the DP World Tour aren’t suddenly banned for life they can return and find a way back into the competition the best example of this is Sergio Garcia he was one of the prominent figures missing from Luke Donald’s European team but rather than wait for the team to come calling Garcia tried to get back in touch and declare his availability for the Ryder Cup selection according to reports by the telegraph Garcia got in touch with the higher ups at DP World Tour to discuss the possibility of returning and eligibility requirements as a show of Faith he even paid off his £700,000 debt in owed fines unfortunately it was a little too late the tour rejected Garcia’s offer to rejoin and pay his debts no the DP world tour isn’t trying to make Garcia a scapegoat instead it very much has to do with whether or not he has a legitimate membership like the European team Trio from earlier resigning is the worst thing to do thankfully though it’s not Final in Garcia’s case he and others in a similar situation need only wait for a year to be able to reapply for a DP World Tour membership afterward they automatically qualify to join the Ridder cup if you enjoyed this video don’t forget to like share and subscribe to the channel Channel see you in the next video
