[Music] disc golf has long been proud of its independence since our Origins we’ve said no to the normal 95 and embraced a lifestyle filled with the unknown it’s had its ups and its Downs yet because of this individuality our sport still uniquely stands out and is now thriv [Music] we are not the sport of decades past yet the same goal of individuality and freedom to pursue this unique passion remains so this holiday weekend embrace the spirit of Independence in shape a future that reflects your truest self the 2024 De Moine challenge starts [Music] [Music] now hello and welcome and I hope that intro got you as pumped to watch disc golf as it just got me we are here in Indianola or near De Moine for the 2024 true Bank De moin challenge presented by DGA big berry commentary Jeremy coing Paul uberry I want to remind you guys or let you guys know that we’ve got these brand new JZ jerseys here we got four all new designs they’re super stretchy and comfortable so if you want to Excel on the course or if you just want to be comfortable while you’re watching jaspr on your phone go to jpro docomo ship right now but that aside we got a serious card of dis golfers here at the de MO challenge today Anthony Barilla starting off the forsome uh everybody likes to watch Anthony Barilla cuz he’s amazing and he throws fun shots makes Crazy cool putts and he’s been on a heater this year former champ andof look at this guy and winner on the pro tour for several seasons in a row now Simon lazat really just finding his game and it’s so cool to see a good playing Simon lazat cor Doan you know Superstar his game suits the style course so well as it suits really any course hit lines make putts it’s hard to beat and round out the card of course we’ve got Mr Iowa himself Ganon Burr last year’s win over his buddy Gavin was a truly awesome thing to see unfold that’s always cool for the Local Hero to come out here and do well in front of his local fans and we just have a beautiful course here today Paul picker Park is a special one yeah let’s start off on whole one par 4 795 seen it before big Highs are into the middle then you got your choice whether you want to throw backhand about Circle Edge or sidearm to get really close to the basket it’s a really windy day today though so getting access to the screen is going to be extra difficult please put your hands together for Simon lazat looks like the wind is slightly down at the moment but for the most part of the day there was a pretty strong headwind on whole one yeah that’s typical here in Iowa they usually send send those the worst players out early and then let those featured CS come in and just absolutely shred in the nice weather exactly theack comes to us from Scottdale Arizona would you please give it up for Anthony barell head or not there’s nothing that could really stop Anthony BR for ex excelling on this Soul no that same disc on this same line I don’t know if there’s a headwind no big enough for it this does need to get down though it could go too far left but that’s just going to set up a big forehand for Anthony should be a pretty simple starting hole for him might to pedor on The teapad Today comes to us from Urbandale Iowa would you please put your hands together for Canon he is wide enough left but back hand is more accessible I yeah and he’s just hasn’t been throwing a lot of Sil lately which I don’t know why you wouldn’t you can throw it 17 billion miles did you ever feel the nerves more when you were playing at the memorial back when it was on tour being from Arizona um oh that’s tight but it gets by the trees that’s going to be way up the Fairway think I ever felt nerves at the memorial more exciting I thought I felt like it rounding out our feature card today this competitor comes to us from Hillsboro Oregon please put your hands together for Cole roli more like just like ready cuz no matter what when you’re the local you’re always going to get you can’t lose you can’t lose and these are going to be four Dandy drives all safe all good opportunities to get to the green who’s first though maybe Simon he chopped a lot of Hiser on that but I’m I’m not yeah okay cool all right Simon’s about the same distance just down to the right I’m going to keep you honest this round okay so be ready I’m ready oh this is heavy on the turn get down Bubba it’s going to find out of bounds and that’s going to be behind The Hobbit hole I believe they call it it’s going to be a tough putt to try to save the par is that for those taters might Anthony does inde need go forehand trying to keep you honest Paul mhm and that’s wide but it stays in bounds that’s going to be mid Circle [Applause] too isn’t it isn’t it a turnator I mean are you trying to what else is that could that be for uh probably tors I don’t think Hobbits are real pardon me if you are a hobbit again an inside Circle one the birdie look tough little putt there whoever I thought was first was actually last to throw Simon of course it just he has that effortless power and and these guys have all have so much power it’s just surprising with Simon just doing a chop Hiser that he could actually be closest to the pin of the of the bunch and he’s playing that super early I think that might have been a misfire can’t imagine him playing that safe genon yeah there’s really not much you can do other than take a bogey from back there it’s going to be a slow start yeah the good thing it was coal you could give it a good little room and look at Matt schlebach back there on the right side catting for Simon this week not Ganon bur oh wonder how Gana feels about that pretty good little left to right here got to get that up with hard yeah yeah the OB does come in play play somewhat quick behind the basket if you’re putting from C2 on this hole well these baskets especially if you miss right they like to launch and high if you skip off the top they fly they certainly do I’m the victim we all are they do have those flags though those are nice I I like the flags I don’t even care if I can see the pin I like the flag for visibility for wind reads and also to mitigate some of those big giant skips that you’ll get off the top of the flat baskets so no birdies on the starting hole it played a third of a stroke over par with that headwin affecting cards all day long Cole with the bogey only 13 birdies on the day that’s a surprisingly low number yeah for a hole that’s relatively simple I mean it’s only it’s inside 800 ft a big wide open Hiser but that’s really telling you how strong that headman was all day ho two is a par 4 753 they brought in the OB a little bit on the right side same Landing Zone push it up here to the top right around this flat little two-piece McNugget into the circle if that’s your flavor you can also go wide Hiser to try to skip it down the hill I even saw a couple rollers in my lifetime up into there off the tea oh youing the approach yeah on the approach sure let’s give a quick check in here with Gavin Babcock last year’s runner up going with that two-piece reference in case you didn’t know what I was talking about it’s that also known as a sidearm I had my car dropped off today at Ford to get the oil change and the guy dropped it back off at the RV park it’s like hey you know Gavin Babcock apparently his son was friends with Gavin in high school so these guys are obviously local Legends in their own right another Iowa native having good little start there on hold too remember last year second place you already mentioned it I don’t know why I’m doing it again but might as well this is really high Simon there’s a big right to left crosswind Simon’s power he’s able to just throw it so high and still get the disc to travel but he’s going to find himself tucked behind some trees probably about 350 to the pin this is more like it yeah this is gigantic never got the flat too my whoa is insane wow didn’t look like he did much you can’t really get it that far without that right to left crosswind it’s a perfect win if you’re Anthony BR and you can just smoke the disc that was huge yeah this guy’s a monster himself and look how far back I mean that’s a huge drive you very rarely see a drive get past all the trees n’s 150 past all the trees that was crazy I like this yeah this is nice this is going to this is the way you don’t have to worry about any of the trees this is yeah besides that one still a good drive yep Simon he’s got that low ceiling and like I said I think he’s probably in the 360 neighborhood go oh that was a good shot just to get into C2 from back there your options are really limited with that low ceiling good little play here throw the sidearm wide very receptive Green Well Done slight headwind 25-footer coming up yeah good way to get your round start if you can make that it is really nice when you get drives this far to just go slower speed into the green this doesn’t look great no this catches ground early I mean it’s fine it’s inside the circle not typically going to see genon Miss two putts in the circle in a row and finally getting up to ab’s approach shot this is just so far it’s hard to even believe that someone threw a drive there oh that was rude very rude slam the door on him just an inch or too high this is a pretty okay just outside the circle I apologize nice catch really not giving him a good putt on that that’s a good catch and a nice birdie it’s just good enough of a putt of course yeah oh no yeah these ones do do like catching that high left if you have the pace it’s a nice little pocket there mhm k no problem yeah the difference there AB uphill goes nose down and the headwind will push it down you’re going uphill into a headwind it’s hard to get the nose down so the nose is going to just lift up almost every time it’s hard to predict that I mean you can predict it but it’s hard to trust it yeah as much as you know you need to last night cupcake and Anthony were putting in the backyard I decided to film it cuz they were seeing who would miss first from 20 ft exactly mhm unfortunately I had to film for 20 minutes unbelievable yeah so I’m he better make all his 20 Footers today is what I’m saying ab and cupcake okay wow yeah oh my gosh look at all the rain that was down earlier in the week yeah it does not look like that right now fortunately whole three 320 ft moving to the right you have to get through this Gap that’s widened significantly over the last couple of years fortunately but if you get too far right you can find the pond and get out of bounds relatively quickly so you have to match the angle of the disc to the ground is this going to have the legs it’s going to come up a bit short but he hits the Gap nicely yeah a little Jeremy coling Circle in the circle butt so Circle to here’s genon throwing the sidearm gets through sit down oh goodness that is a terrible break on that one the grass is so thick out here and that wasn’t even close to staying in bounds after that big giant skip if this gets through it will be good but Still’s pretty good that’s near Circle one I’m not going to label a distance coal going with the putter turnover a little tighter I like the line oh that’s I like the line a lot just outside Bullseye beautiful didn’t really even make the disc move that far right and that’s okay yeah AB sorry ab’s up it’s okay you were embarrassed oh that is just as good if not better than genet’s putt on the last hole little Speedy yeah but it seemed more centered than gon’s put in the last hole it was a good putt if ganons was a good putt that’s a good putt too even though it’s on the ground yep and maybe a little misread there from Simon saw his stay up maybe thought that his would mhm stay up as well Cole on the board little rebound action for Cole but that stays in again with a relatively short par putt tricky one though yeah the wind it’s still Breezy yes but gon typically not too bothered by the wind his combination of stable disc selection and Zippy putt allows him to really thrive in windy conditions so the only one birdie for Cole after that great drive now look at this it just it moves a little bit from left to right but for the most part that was a very Str throw that was a nice little [Music] slow-mo L four this is a fantastic fantastic Par 3 472 ft again my gosh this water line is so high right now it’s probably at least 2 or 3 feet down from where it is currently oh my gosh it’s like inside Bullseye right now this is wild yeah there that’s what it looks like today when was this drone filmed my goodness we’ll check in here with Ezra big strong Tailwind today allowing him to go high wide Heiser two through three and a little Bullseye beautiful great conditions today to go for the high wide Hiser just knowing that the wind is just going to be helping you the whole time Co elect for the straighter route riding the winds just too far yeah it’s going to stay safe but yeah it is obstructed and 45 ft coming back very overstable fast driver for Anthony and that is just too easy n guessing this is going to be yeah wide super high thing is just cruising again’s got so much [Applause] power that’s going to be a pretty dangerous putt I’m wondering if that tree is going to be in his way I don’t see gon lay up too many putts no oh that could be the kiss of death oh he skip safe oh my goodness come on Simon right there every other person you’ve ever known in your life would have gone out of Elms after hitting that leaf yeah Simon creeping and skipping missing the stakes [Applause] too he ain’t laying this up no no chance that’s good touch to yeah give it a bid and stay close this is about the putt that Simon made to win in the playoff a couple years ago against Robert Burge maybe just a bit farther out Cole is good oh you see what a birdie Anthony leaning with him in the background and Simon after the scare of OB collects the birdie he’s now on the board at one under I wonder how many times Simon missed this hole in his career same question for ab my goodness Ganon is going to take Bob after up par with the other three getting the birdie don’t see that very often here and this card made up for 1/8 of the entire birdies in the field with 24 on the day and now they get to be greeted by the Hive five or the hive at five do you know the name of it what what’s the official name the bees knes the be they’re awesome they are the Bees knes No and Rams are off to an excellent start at four under through four or through five no through four holes he’s got all four mhm wow what a start Island hole 330 ft see the stakes on that left side there’s actually going to be some hayy bales over there so you can’t SL wide in got it aired onto the screen here if you don’t the Drop Zone pretty penalizing you’re just going to be moving up to the fbot so very important to get your drive inbounds here Co just going with a mid-range here turned what a beautiful flight a little bit deep it’s going to be it back little bit that was nice look at the right side of the gallery over there those are all stands there crowd greets each player they introduce the whole card and they welcome you to five it’s an awesome [Applause] site wow that was close back there oh as much as Josh had to turn I think there’s no way to get a proper follow flight on the yeah but that was really close to going in maybe this is leaking left but it’s a putter so I think it’s just going to sit down there is OB back there if you somehow skip through all the stuff all the little branches and they like G but there there is an OB line back there so don’t go too far yeah it’s a good starting with but it’s sinking quick oh boy everyone a bit long there it’s going to be some really tough putts coming into this green I love one hole like this per event it’s really cool I don’t love two holes like this perent I love the one hole where everyone gets to gather around have concessions and all that it’s it’s awesome for the whole culture of it no way no way gon you’re a [Applause] sicko you got a few Woos but they don’t even know how hard that was oh my goodness hit a bunch of stuff too I mean get out of the way that thing’s coming in hot not getting that putter back if he misses yeah it’s got the green ook down there oh this is not a good spot I think he’d rather be what Ganon was uh oh great reaction off of that okay oh that is his disc right next to it I thought that that was going to potentially roll same timing down on one knee and Spins it in there maybe no one better in the history of disc golf than the nose up spin putt from range Simon lazat I really like the the putt out of Anthony’s hand I initially thought it looked perfect caught a little bit too much of that limb and you will take the only part of the group after four safe but substandard drives in my opinion those are they really had to work for each one of those birdie putts now all four players tied at two under on our feature card the pace being set three players at four under through five holes hole six par 4 633 this is a tricky one you have this out- of- bounds line on the left hand side and when you have a Tailwind it’s really tough to gauge how far right you need to get your disc on a turnover you’re going to see people that are pushing far right into the wood line it’s going to set up a second shot into this well protected green usually big high sidearm in there or low turn over really the meat of this hole is off of the drive though correct keep it in bounds yeah don’t go too far right o underneath that Branch yeah see that’s a little bit too far right it’s going to roll back out tournament play like you’re always pushing that OB line then tournament play you see a lot of people pushing that right side correct yeah trying not to get that this is nice if it gets a little bit of stability at the end looks like oh my gosh that is huge it’s going to be a tough angle yeah but the distance is [Music] [Applause] incredible I do like this if you have the distance just a really safe play in my opinion yeah and and really if you just move forward and you stay somewhat in the middle like right there I don’t think ganon’s farther than 285 to 300 from the pin and that’s a pretty stock forand Heiser from there I think a lot of players get baited into going for something a little bit bigger than they need to on this hole like this is going to Fade Out of Bounds more than likely yes just Anthony can get so far with the forehand that stays away from that out of bounds I agree this might find OB left yeah it’s getting stable at the end oh I think it hit the stake and that may have kept him in bounds yeah he is in wow he never really well I guess he was a little bit farther so maybe he needed that turn but see how Ganon just gets it high and moving to the right the whole way early though really early interesting good kick [Applause] out the hole is showing why it wasn’t necessarily birdied as much as you would think that it would be maybe trying to get up and down how’s the reaction that’s good [Applause] yeah this is going to be fun hard to capture that on film oh almost close yeah just slightly too much anheiser angle if that had come back in flat that would have have been remarkable you know how genon stands like that when you’re in wedding don’t have you ever heard like if you stand don’t buckle your legs cuz you could pass out oh have you ever heard that no yeah that’s like a real thing so okay he stands like that he buckles his leg sometimes on his straddle Putt and it always makes me think like dude don’t pass out I don’t oh and you got a Topper when was the last time you seen one of those been a while everyone loves the effort coming in at such a steep angle that is truly tough to make but good effort provided by Cole hello oh Simon loved it out of his hand what was not to love it right online nose up spinner just slightly off left see how AB likes to bend the legs no pass out yeah safe I’m not worried about him passing on a little bit n good putt there good proper wedding form mhm genon I think I ruting for Ganon forever well at least the viewers I’m never going to be able to not see it it’s only when he’s straddling no he certainly did it there he buckled at knee a couple times I’m sorry me there’s no to Market really oh man and Cole’s trying to figure out how the heck do I do this yeah he doesn’t know but here’s something funny he should be looking at the top cuz if his putter is touching the rings of the chains it’s actually counts is in he’s not looking at it but on these baskets in particular there are chains there are chains that go up on top he’s just wondering how to how to tap it in right yeah sure I would be looking to see if it’s supported by the link above cuz it would count as it you could argue it I’ve heard you make this argument before I hate the argument but I’ve heard it and I understand where you’re coming from I can’t miss that so like hey man if a wedgie counts I know I 100% think that on top should count Simon that was probably two in off center from being just a fantastic make Gavin Babcock man what a start for the runnerup last year 5 through six Matt Hammerstein also 5 through six heaters East coaster out here playing on tour got the island hole 345 ft uphill maybe 35 something like that 20 to 30 yeah probably there left to right crosswind don’t pay attention to that flag blow in the opposite direction because it is not going that way today we got a little check in here with Isaac Robinson his favorite shape it really is just throw it high get a little bit turned and look at it fighting against that crosswind right now oh but comes up short looked a little high to me I’m like does this guy got that got it like that that was way too high but who am I to question the World Champ nobody when you do stuff like this what a save if you do not land inside the mulch area it is an Hazard penalty play it from where it lies with a one-stroke addition Co going with mid-range this is a great hole you can just do whatever shot you’re the best at in Your Arsenal do that here and he’s great great with those mid Rings just like hole three not necessarily interested in getting it to turn just throwing it straight yep getting the distance right throwing it straight is a great formula and I was actually surprised at this play right here yeah I would think he likes those flexies you know yeah uhhuh but when like you said can’t argue with these guys it’s hard to former champ another form of champ we got a bunch of Champs on this card oh no oh boy hazard from right off the tea a completely unexpected shank here from gonur my goodness grey I would consider it if I were him I mean that looked like it kicked pretty hard left I’m sure he’ll go over and check out the lie but oh this is turning this is mid-range okay so what is genon going to [Applause] do yeah he does elect to R smart this is just like his best shot yeah I mean really hard to imagine him making this mistake twice could you imagine he just circle three would have been the best three Anthony just inside the circle always low was wanting the lift on there you know you know that that would have been the second best three ever you know what the first best three ever is I do it’s you camp Cannon 2016 US dubs yeah Ace the r four when we reted I’ll never forget that man that was fun genon that’s a good bogey to take man I mean that’s a great B that’s incredible that’s incredible actually that could have got out of control quick there are so many players who just barely Miss This Island miss their Putt and take their Fort oh yeah and so you’re not really losing too much ground with the bogey on seven yeah a couple of guys on your card took the birdie but you only lost one stroke to Anthony who threw a pretty great Drive yep I mean a little nose up on your next one cuz you’re afraid to flex it Miss it again you miss that putt I mean yeah it could be a compound mistake you hope it’s not but gon’s so good it’s hard I mean like a slow start who cares he’s in 53rd Place right now who cares Ganon can have slow starts he’s that type of player even in a three round tournament where it kind of feels like you have to always have it going from the very beginning he’s the kind of guy who just was like well at some point he’s going to go seven down through seven holes yes and it’s just going to be fine these hay BTS pretty cool huh did you hit one no okay I was just saying they look cool hole eight part three 580 down the hill one of the coolest holes to play on tour awesome yeah so rewarding when you put one in the circle not much to say about it there is out of bounds here and there and some rough on the right but just fun to watch the go down the hill man it is so fun 50 ft I think it drops from te to Green this needs to drop this could find o be oh little rebound off the foliage what the and a putt from maybe even inside well just outside the circle I believe a Jeremy Circle okay what is Simon doing here coming at this steep of an angle what are you doing with the roller roller what did that hit the hay B oh no it got past it oh there it is is are you kidding [Applause] me I love you so much you’re so bored with throwing a 580t air shot that you just throw a roller watch this what a lunatic there’s a lot of stuff in the way like there’s hay bills there’s those signs has anyone ever done this before no what why would you there’s a big old stumper that’s incredible point in his practice round is he decid yeah statistically this is the play no it seems great now I mean he’s inside C1 for birdie reminded me when Eagle did the roller in h 10 at yeah Brewster Ridge mhm like why hit the pin yep but then it’s like then you’re like well he hit the pin so this looks such a line oh my gosh what a gorgeous shot does it get the ground I don’t think it’s I don’t think so but that was just maybe a few feet of height out of his hand from being perfect I feel like we did picker Park a disservice when we did not have this hole on any of our Dream a teams because this hole could have fit into you can’t be giv spoilers bro I’m sorry but I just I love this hole Yeah it’s not going in mine Anthony drawing metal Ever hly After the way you treated me today I’m just kidding I’m not kidding at all whole eight you hear me Canon takes the knee and that’s just low out of the hand good reaction though you see some wild reactions off the bases of these baskets Can Cole capitalize off the rebound yeah he can Center as they make them is that not such it’s just such an old school style putt for a 19-year-old kid in this day age yeah love the nose up touch going in oh Simon well fortunately it doesn’t look like he threw a second roller cuz sometimes these rims when the basket’s on the edge of the Hill what’s so fun about gon AB coal it’s not a finished product yet like they’re you know like in 10 years what are they going to look like what is that putt going to look like are they going to be taller and skinnier oh what I don’t know I’m I’m saying like I know their game yes their game is going to be something it’s what it’s what makes doing what we do here so fun you know we can we can really experience what they’re experienced mentally but physically what they’re capable of is just blowing the roof off of what we know dis golf can be exactly what can be done with a disc look at that form how does that get better but it’s going to it’s going to it has to mhm got Jon Jones Bones six under through eight a lot of six unders yeah six unders the mark this is a tricky one yeah it is walk us through it J you’re never going to find a steeper incline off the te in the sported discop I mean it’s just straight uphill it’s you kind of just Chuck up an anheiser with either a backhand or a forehand and just try to get it to get up the hill and just her down before it finds OB left or right side we’ll check in here with Gavin Babcock he is one of those six unders seems like this would just be Child’s Play for him little force over sidearm flicker rusi yes sir it is a seven one of the limited numbers of forehand players on tour that go with the one finger forehand but it’s a strong one finger forehand strong front nine seven under I do like fle I like this play from him but is it high enough yeah it’s inside of germ Circle one right there in mid Circle I think that one is in circle one I know it gets tricky with all those little feathers everywhere all right fair enough oh it does the fpo basket and stuff that’s gone Simon is not going to Ricochet off the OTB disc sign and he will stay out of bounds tough backand shape here it is oh look at that me I think it was so close to the hillside that it actually brought dust up off the ground there [Applause] beautiful is that what happened you see that the little dust shoot up that’s from his grip like his powder that he uses oh oh okay happens with a lot of these guys I see it and it’s like he just creates such a Vortex with his rotation I’m so like there’s little tornadoes that just fly everywhere when he with him he’s always got the little poofers a nearly identical shot from what we saw with Gavin just a moment ago it’s Tad shorter how far does it play with the sidearm up though I feel like it plays like 350 okay maybe more Simon unable to save the par he will finish the front nine at two under seven back of the pay set by Gavin I’m sorry five back of the pay set by Ganon that was close thought it would lift in there it looked good nicely done that is kind of the downfall of like up and down putt like that you really got to time those lifts and those drops someone like Ganon and ab they’re just they know kind of right away well that’s why you have players like Ricky Yaki who have found ways to change his style of putting based on the distance and not many players have been able to perfect that and Implement that into their game but you know if you are an up and down style push putter you really do need to in this day and age at least if you want to make those deep putts you’ve got to find a way to get a little bit more spin to increase the length front Nine’s over and only one player shot Seven under and you saw how he got there in a few holes Gavin Babcock he is starting off strong few players at six a ton at five and four and as you would know is a dis Golf Pro Tour event nine holes in it’s going to be a tight race very tight back nine coming up pretty soon and uh we’re excited to bring it to you so bring it all back see you there peace [Music] I [Music] do do [Music]

  1. I got curious about Uli's claim that if a disc lays on top of the basket and touches the chains, it's considered in. So I ended up doing a rule deep dive.

    Here's the PDGA ruling (807 B):
"In order to complete a hole with a basket target, the thrower must release the disc and it must come to rest supported by the tray or the chains below the chain support."

So no, I don't think that counts, at least anymore.

I have nothing against Uli, I'm just a techical guy who enjoys finding loopholes and whatnot.

Completely unrelated ruling that I found and haven't seen utilized:

It's generally known that if you throw OB and your lie is in a place where there's OB between you and the basket, you can move directly away from the basket (optional relief) without an additional penalty stroke. Also works after a 2 meter rule penalty.

However, the OB doesn't need to be between you and the basket. The restriction is that you cannot mark your lie in OB.

So for example if you're on an OB line that is parallel to the line from your 1m relief lie to the basket, you can also move away from the basket as far as you want.

  2. My wife actually locked her knees at her best friend’s wedding and passed out right after they exchanged rings. It’s a real thing. 😂

  3. I was playing the USDGC dubs just a few holes ahead of you guys!! That was a ridiculous save that didn't need to happen lol

  4. Yo Paul, it's you never want to lock your legs. Like with solders in formation, when they lock their legs for a long period of time, they pass out. That also happens to grooms during their wedding. Gannon is buckling his legs. There is no way he passes out from that.

  5. For Uli's argument about the disc on top of the basket. The links are just holding up the chains but aren't part of the chains. So they don't count! 🙂
