Iowa Speedway a real life filled of dreams for a long time the NASCAR exfinity series was a fixture here in Iowa but after a four-year Hiatus the xinity series is finally back in America’s Heartland welcome everyone to the Iowa Speedway this is Grassroots at its best for the folks of Iowa I couldn’t pick up a better place to win short track racing 78 smile very fast Dees hit hard from behind by Edwards William Byron told us he would win tonight and indeed he does Ryan priest said fate will tell me if I meant to do this at a bigger level Fate has decided Justin Aly wins and Chase Brisco is going to flex his muscle and win at the Iowa Speedway ah some good moments over the years here at Iowa welcome to countdown to Green for the NASCAR exfinity series as the second half of the regular season starts and we begin our NASCAR coverage right here on USA in NBC Sports along with the Hall of Famer Dell Jarrett and Cup Series team owner Brad Dy I’m Marty Snider welcome back guys you ready to get to work DJ uh looking forward to it you know watching the first part of this season uh with the xinity series Racing’s been exciting we’ve got some rivalries going on and I think that’s bringing the fans back here once again they’ve always loved coming here and watching Infinity racing through the years uh they’re here in their campers excited for week for racing for two days it’s exactly what they been dreaming of right here for a lot of years is they would have an Infinity cup weekend I agree man the fans have absolutely turned out in droves this place is packed and what’s interesting for DJ and I we’re coming back to a short track and These Guys these young exfinity series drivers are the recent guys who raced on short tracks as they moved their careers along so I’m expecting an epic day on this racetrack the atmosphere is good DJ but what kind of track are the drivers facing that’s the big question of the weekend yeah I don’t care if you’re Jeremy Clemens who’s run here 19 times I think Justin alar 16 times this is not the same racetrack they’ve put down Pavement in the corners uh it’s going to drive completely different way faster than what they’ve ever raced here before so the drivers they’re going to have to be adjustable if you will in themselves not just with their race cars but deciding when to move around on this new asphalt and where and how much how aggressive can they get in that respect without making a mistake so it’s going to be fun to watch yeah that’s all I hear in the garage these young exfinity series drivers this place is fast I’ve heard that a thousand times this morning I say aren’t all RAC trcks fast he’s like no it’s really fast so yeah who can be aggressive get up out of that Groove and go race and maybe win a race BR normally a new track is new for everybody but look at this who’s who’s list of who’s won here this is unbelievable all these guys one through 10 there one through 15 have gone on to have really successful cup careers so it just shows you what it takes to win here to be successful here and what’s in the possible future of these race car drivers the one winner in the the field Justin all guar right now he is with Jeff Burton well you are the one winner in the field you won here in the past uh but this isn’t the same racetrack by any means tell us how different it is well obviously it’s good to get back to out Speedway this has been such a a cool facility that we’ve raced at for a number of years and it was hard taking a break from coming out here but this is far from the old Iowa Speedway with all the new Paving the the different style of driving really you know we’ve seen it with a cup series we obviously have it with the Infinity Series tires are going to be important today managing the tires but our Precision Bill Brant fresh I cam was really good I’m I’m starting fourth but I actually think we had a shot of the pole but I think it’s going to be managing the day really well and and we should be in good shape and Dave I’m pretty sure Justin will be one of those guys going for the win I have no doubt Jeff now three-time supercars Champion Shane Van gisbergen knows about being on a roll you’ve won the last two races but you crashed in practice yesterday so is the momentum over or you still good with it oh no definitely back on an over it’s tough um yeah made an era yesterday it’s good getting laps and Laps uh Kubota Kamar was was going really well so now we’re in the backup car it’s white still looks good um and we got to go to the back at the start so which is okay I’ll just take my time be patient learn and um looks tricky out there watching that Cup qualifying on the on the clean track so I just take my time and try and move forward as I get better you’ve been here long enough now no NASCAR fans love him some chaos the run-ins with Austin Hill your semi- teammate there has that been motivating to you distracting annoying what’s that been like and does it continue no I don’t think so and just seen them then and seems all right but um yeah I got no I got no problem with him and and we’re starting at other ends of the field today so anyway is what it is I really know on the ovals he’s on a different League to me and but hopefully one day I’ll get there all right Shane Ben GS starting get the back today we’ll see how far the 97 can go Kim and Dave we’re short track racing and last week there was some displeasure with SVG how do you keep that frustration from spilling into today uh I don’t really expect to be racing them much today but uh you know just get it behind us and go to the next one um is what it is we’re good hard racing and he got the better end of the stick that time but um you know maybe next time it outcome might be differently Austin Hill rolls off P1 here this afternoon oh my how they’re playing this down yes I don’t care how what you say but I I do understand been in the situation before but because you don’t want to go in to any race thinking that there might be an altercation with another driver but they’re going to find themselves around might not happen here today but we’ll just see this is something that is brewing these drivers both of them Drive extremely hard should be fun to watch but you know so far what I’ve seen good hard racing and and that’s what we expect from this Infinity Series but SVG is he’s the real deal and you know he’s completed a lot of laps and and has done a great job even on the other parts of of racing besides the road course say Brad which SVG celebration is better this the uh the drifting burnout which a little bit of troll there on Austin Hill at Sona by the way way or the rugby ball kick which one do you like more oh I like the burnout with the the salute you’re number one as he goes by him that’s awesome I love this rivalry that it’s starting to to take some type of form yeah you’re right I mean Austin Hill is miles ahead of him on these ovals but he’s miles ahead of Austin Hill on the short tracks and we got just a Sprinkle ones yeah yeah yeah exactly you noticed something Brad they actually walked out to drive our intros together your Eagle Eye caught that right look at there it is Austin Hill has his hand in his pockets the whole time did not just like you know trying to hold on not take a good swing at him I saw that I saw it started right there baby look at it yeah just that each other like that little crash yesterday that SVG had off of turn two it deprived us of having them start on the front row together which would have been great that would have been fantastic yes uh but I I love Austin Hills line I don’t think I’m going to be racing him my which is a little bit of a shot as well uh we’re just getting started here today one yeah I guess that’s how it is here I just stood up for myself ultimately just you know got ran over it I just given it all I had and two guys going for the same realate come together no matter what comment I say it’ll be wrong so I plead the fifth we’re going to have to add an extra s to SVG because the last two weeks he’s been Superman Shane tell you what Brad they gets me fired up for the second half of the regular season here here’s how the uh playoff standings look yeah man Justin alar again marching his way towards maybe an opportunity to win that Championship chanler Smith’s been outstanding Jesse L’s been great Sam Mayer I keep watching though I’m watching these guys Parker cerman he’s right on the cus of advancing into that top 10 AJ aldinger is another guy Cole kusters had a good run this season hasn’t won any races but it’s been very strong yeah you know as this season started I was like who’s going to step up here what’s going to be different than what we saw last year you had you know some Changing of the Guard if you will but there’s one name that’s kind of stuck out in one driver Jesse love Brad mentioned him he’s just been really really good I mean he’s completed all but five laps so if you hire a rookie what you’re wanting to do is get experienced become better as they move along but he’s been fast everywhere that you’ve been he has the win at Talladega he’s finishing laps getting great experience this is a young man 19 years old you’re going to have to keep an eye on he’s going to win a lot more races Brad is there a driver you’re surprised to see near the cut line yeah it would be Brandon Jones and it seems like this time every year we’re talking about Brandon Jones because he’s always a threat to win races but it’s been a little bit of a this year 30 points behind the cut line he’s 14th you know he’s got five top 10 but he’s also got five do you know dnp so that makes me a little bit nervous about him at this point in the season yeah and I’m going to go with his teammate Sammy Smith uh kind of along the same lines the inconsistent part of it outstanding on short tracks but they’ve got to clean up here are the last five finishes 33rd third third 34th 33rd you can’t do that and expect to win a championship great great talent has everything that it takes to become a are here let’s hear from the Iowa native Sammy Smith who right now is with Kim like you guys mentioned holds the last playoff spot just 11 points to the good with the challenges that this track presents what do you have to do today to make sure you keep that spot in the standings yeah I guess uh finish there was a lot of right front issues yesterday and I know hopefully we don’t have any issues but definitely be aware of that and uh finish races that’s definitely another key we uh haven’t been able to do that quite through the first part of the season and hoping to uh clean that up a little bit you’re an Iowa native from Johnston Iowa just 40 minutes away I know you have a lot of friends family sponsor people here what would it mean to win here this afternoon it mean everything very special week uh with TMC friends family everybody here so it’s cool to uh be here and hopefully put on a good show today a lot of lot of unknowns Sammy Smith Dave rolls off from the 17th position Kim we showed the playoff standings there and you saw Anthony Alfredo in the red 31 behind but 12 races to go but that’s not the only thing on his mind your brother Robbie’s getting married today and you’re supposed to be the best man how do you balance all this it’s it’s really frustrating honestly being the best man stuck here in Iowa I would do anything to be there right now if I could but I chose this life I just hate that you know it’s affecting his special day so um congratulations Robbie and Maggie I hope everything goes well and it’s the perfect day for you guys I love you both so much wish I could be there um but hopefully I could win and do my best man speech in Victory Lane that’d be the next best thing so so if you don’t get there what’s the plan FaceTiming and and you’re uh they’re going to clink glasses and you’re going to do a toast and all that yes that’s exactly right I’ve already uh facetimed him and Maggie both a couple times a day just to check in see how think they’re going try to be a part of it the best I could I gave him some ad advice some tips this morning some things I wish I knew going to a wedding day because there’s just a lot of nerves and it’s it’s an exciting moment you know so uh just pray for a great day for them uh and a safe race here at Iowa we’ve got a really solid Ferguson Chevrolet Camaro and uh man we’ll be a Victory Lane if we’re as fast as it’s the internet so Josh Graham my crew chief and the guys have been working really hard and we’ve been you know a small team doing big things this year you mentioned where we’re at at in the playoff bubble we we’re in the bubble but the last two weeks unfortunately we just had mechanical failures but the speed was there we were a top 10 car so we’ve been bringing fast cars every week and uh I think today’s the day we turn things around get back into the top 10 and start running up front all right have a great day today maybe you’ll get the FaceTime for Victory Lane Marty that would be cool he starts 19th best manra car driver today for Anthony Alfredo so DJ we saw some Tire issues in the cup series side any concerns for that on the Infinity Series side today yeah there are concerns but there’re two completely different things as to what’s going on so with the exfinity side which is the worry today and what they’re having they’re having a heat issue that because of the loads that they’re getting and the grip in this Racetrack and the speeds they’re creating a lot more heat this causes the tire to blister uh at times and especially you can get it on the right front uh right rear and so we’re going to be watching for that the bad side of it is drivers don’t always feel that you know your car might be seeming like it’s fine you might be sliding around a little bit but you have no idea and then all of a sudden when it’s too late Brad on track this Place may be difficult but off track it’s a party I think I think there’s one or two beverages being had out there in rvl level look at this you got perfect vision of the racetrack look at all these fans this place is packed they’re having a good time I can’t wait I’m ready for some lunch and there’s plenty around somewhere out there is Jeff Burton you haven’t gotten into trouble yet by the way have you Jeff I haven’t Marty but this crowd up here they want me to come up there there’s a party happening up there I got to tell you though the race fans in Iowa it’s been so much fun the energy and the enthusias in the in the Grand Sands is crazy but also on the other side of the Grand Sands when I came down from the booth there’s people everywhere there’s all kinds of things to do food music music it’s a great time T tons of campers out here it’s good to be in Iowa Brad Brad what is it about the excitement of a new track coming on the schedule it’s the unknowns you know you come to this Racetrack and it’s it’s exciting because everybody wants to be here you got new fans coming in pouring in to watch this and now all of a sudden you throw in this asphalt this new asphalt you’ve got totally unknown you don’t know who’s going to win this race today or tomorrow but the unknowns make it for great television and great race to watch DJ 100% anytime you say short track racing fans know that there’s going to be a lot of excitement is it tougher on the xinity series drivers than it will be for the cup drivers tomorrow because in essence they’re going to in theory widen out the racetrack for the cup guys yeah today yeah it is a lot more difficult but I think they’ll Embrace that challenge when we come back time for today’s pre-race ceremonies from the Hawkeye State here from Iowa Speedway only two weeks in a row Che has been money all day long let’s go uh keep racking them up how about that 100K winner come on baby you were as fast as expin the internet today that’s for sure he continues to break ground in NASCAR we are going to be some bad M all baby tell you what 2024 Brad’s had it all close finishes new winners a little controversy that’s a way that’s a good mix for a season great mix I love it got to have it uh by the way garage area a little chatter this morning Chandler Smith seems to be the guy to beat today you agree with that I agree Chandler Smith is just lights out fast he is so much quicker than everyone else if he can get to the end of the day he has a chance but for me the guy is Sher Creed it’s time it’s time this is the perfect opportunity for him to take advantage of these guys and get off of those second place finishes and win off of Another Second Place finish what kind of racing will this Iowa Speedway Brad if you wanted tickets you had to get him within the first two days already sold out in days for the whole weekend Marty the Iowa fans have always been here they just waited on us to show up and and they have showed out and Iowa Speedway has a pretty rich history of winners Kyle bus Brad keslowski Ryan blay they’ve all been to Victory Lane here in the NASCAR Xfinity series who adds their name to that list today Dave Burns Marty it could be Cory Heim and if you follow the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series you know the name and you know what he’s done this year in trucks four wins and he’s a top the playoff leaderboard in that series also running partial xinity series for for Sam Hunt racing and all he did yesterday in his first trip to the Iowa Speedway went fastest in practice keep your eye on him time today it could be his day Kim well Dave Sheldon Creed is coming off a second place finish at Sonoma last week in his ninth runner up as he still searches for that very first NASCAR xinity series win when I talked to him yesterday I asked how frustrating is it coming up one spot short again he told me it’s not he said who else in the field has that many second place finishes and the same amount of time he views it as a strength Creed feels very strong about his car today maybe today it’s his day guys to find Victory Lane you know the guy I’m keeping an eye on is Cole kuster our defending Champion he’s run really strong this season hasn’t been able to get the Victory Lane but they’re getting closer and closer I think Cole kuster takes advantage of this situation of the unknown and pushes himself towards the front today Brad talk about a team that’s on a roll how about Sam May four top four finishes in the last five races but practiced yesterday was not good for this race team Sam Mar said we fought everything loose tight we could not get the car to handle he was near the bottom of the charts and I think this rain out Brad of qualifying definitely helps this race team a lot of changes on this car he will start fifth today and Chandler Smith we talked about him he is no doubt in the garage area the favorite when you look at long runs when you look at short tracks this year this young man’s been so fast yeah his lights out fast but can he get to the end of the day Marty that’s that’s the question I think that’s going to be one of the things to certainly to follow and the start of this race going to be very interesting a very treacherous racetrack we’ll see how the Xfinity series drivers handle that it’s time to get the engines this is where the grip is the drivers are talking about it feels fast like do fast shocking for this size racetrack why is it so grippy check this out I pull this fonge across it it rips it apart it pulls it right off that’s also what it does to the tires tires are going to have a lot of heat up the day who can be here control tires and ultimately win this race can’t wait to see it [Music] r [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] it’s it’s sascar xinity series racing from Iowa Speedway welcome to the hi perks 250 as we scroll through the starting line up today let’s chat about Shane Van gisbergen we heard from him earlier off the backto back winds but Iowa has been a little bit of a reality check for Shane he will have to start from the back in a backup car today after wreck in practice he told me these overs are a massive challenge for me it’s way different than anything I’ve ever done before and so far Kim Iowa might be the biggest challenge of them all for SVG well Marty AJ alinger starts in the 11th position and unlike other drivers in the field he has no experience at Iowa in any Series so to combat that he’s running double duty this weekend also in the Cup race tomorrow but the team thinks that EXT seat time yesterday in practice will help him here this afternoon Dave couple more Iowa drivers in the field came to talk about Brett Moffett will start 29th today he’s from Grimes Iowa and his first xinity start ever was here in August of 2012 also Joey gase starting 36 he’s a veteran 280 starts now but his very first yep right here August 2011 at the Iowa Speedway Rick thanks Dave and I’ve got DJ up here with me Dale Jarrett we went to the bullpen because say my buddy Steve lart yesterday got through one practice show and lost his voice so uh we’re letting him save the voice for tomorrow we want him to be here for the first ever running of the Cup Series race from Iowa Speedway so he’ll be beside us but uh we won’t let him talk uh we’re saving that voice up but DJ uh 20 races for the exfinity series have been run here most recently 2019 Chase Brisco was the winner but this racetrack is completely different from what the xinity series has exp experienced for yeah completely different in the way you would think well it just got older and that would make it different but actually part of it has been repaved these drivers Justin Aly is a group of a lot of winners here that are great short track racers but he has no idea what’s going to happen here today and talking to him and some others that have experience here it’s a completely different racetrack way faster but the other side of it is they don’t know exactly how hard they can go on the tires without having an issue also and when can they move move around on the track this is going to evolve throughout the day that you’re not just going to be on the bottom or in the middle you’re going to have to move around to figure things out okay so let’s talk about the day and break down this race as we look at our race analysis for this race only 250 laps broken down into these stages yeah and they can basically run all of the stages on fuel but the drivers are going to probably want tires uh between that Nascar has given them an extra set than what they had planned to so they have four in the pits right now but besides what they’re on here today so it’s going to be interesting to see how they might break this up are they going to start things at the end of stage one with the opportunity there um they’re certainly going to in that last stage when this race is going to be settled that they’re going to get uh put on a set of tires at that point in time coming on to Pit Road now so they’ll check their Pit Road speed that’s 40 mil an hour entry to Pit Road is going to be a little bit tricky a little bit interesting we’ll keep our eye on that and Jesse love we see him right there on screen let’s listen into his maybe a little pep talk before the start trying to win us race here no mistakes keep that in my ear help me help you guys yep 10 just stay under the Tire man just stay under the tire okay it’s going to pay off and the interesting thing about Jesse love in this weekend is he did basically no prep work normally he would watch old races over and over again but he told me he wanted no preconceived notions so he watched nothing all he did was he looked at Larson’s onboard cameras from the tire test he wanted to come here as a blank slate and he felt like that was going to be the best opportunity to just take what the track is giving him very rare he said he felt lazy and that’s coming from a driver who is usually an absolute sponge for information Dave Kim John Hunter nich in the black and white 20 Toyota Camry he wants to get a notion of this place that’s because in the Cup Series where he’s running fulltime this year he’s only had two top 10 he needs a win to make the playoffs there so he wanted to get to know this place very very well so he could apply it to tomorrow and perhaps go to Victory Lane Marty Dave it’s crazy to think that Ford has not won in the Xfinity Series so far this year but that’s the case a very good candidate to maybe get them to Victory Lane how about Riley herps this is the same time in the year last year where he sort of started to heat up a bit they’ve had three top 10 in their last six races and talking about that extra set of tires these teams have gotten deavin rbo told me we’re going to try and save that for the end of the race when the teams take that extra set of tires NASCAR gave them that’s going to be a big part of the conversation today yeah Marty and during the pre-race show I know you and DJ and Brad all spoke so highly of the 26 of Cory Heim and how fast he was in practice but because there was no qualifying they went to the The Rules book and he has to start all the way back in the 22nd position how difficult will that fast car be able to get up to the front going to take a lot of patience he has that but this young man is exceptional he has four truck wins this year he’s won nine of 53 truck races just an incredible job that he does behind the wheel he finished fourth at Richmond I think he’s someone we need to keep our eye on what’s he able to do in moving around and how easily can he move through this traffic yeah so much traffic in front of him because there was no qualifying and looks like they’re going to add another lap so we will take a look at the point standings through the 14 races that have been run already this year and and Aly Chandler Smith Austin Hill Shane Van gisbergen you know you look at van gisbergen and Austin Hill back-to-back wins for those drivers so pretty impressive and then we talked a little bit in the pre-race show about maybe those two don’t see eye to eye so fighting for Supremacy in the Infinity Series yes they are and they both do outstanding jobs in their in their ways that they do it and the different types of tracks they get the job done on but they find going to find themselves around each other more you actual points leader this point in time hasn’t won a race yet Cole kuster is there too so we’ll watch him also a great short track racer reigning Series champion you saw the 97 falling back again that’s because of a accident in practice he got into the wall they went to a backup car and so the 97 goes to the back and we see Cole kuster there in the D zero Dave DJ mentioned him as a possible winner here he’s got to get by some radio trouble though they don’t think it’s on the spotter then they don’t think it’s on the pit box they think it might be with Cole’s radio that’s the worst spot we’ll monitor that and see how they do but right now they’re having a little trouble communicating all right communication key uh and a race car all right Jeff you just came off the racetrack I saw the sponge uh do you have anything left for that I mean you did it just completely Spong gone we throw the sponge away and that’s and that’s the that’s the theme of the day you know is is there is some concern with tire wear we’ve been talking about that how do you manage that early in this race what do you do do you go out and run as fast as you can or do you back up just a little bit to try to save a little tire not be the first guy with a tire issue that not a bad strategy whenever you have some some concerns about tires yeah you don’t want to give up too much track position but you also don’t want to create a big problem for yourself here early in this race so there’s a real balance that these drivers are going to have to go through till they know more and get that first set of tires off of here and see exactly what’s going on today Austin Hill will be on the inside and bring this field to the green flag because of Shane Ben gisbergen dropping to the back that pushes the seven of Justin Aly up to the front row and he’s the only xinity Series driver in the field that has been to Victory Lane here in Iowa we’ll see if he’s able to get another win here in the Heartland as the fans here at Iowa have packed the place they on their feet the Infinity Series it’s racing in Iowa Seven sideways as he goes through one and two but he’ll take the lead away what a move Wow first time they’ve really been side by side this whole weekend he wasn’t scared up the RAC track the 18 gets into the side of Austin Hill they both catch it continue to go the right direction three wide as they cross the stripe they might be conserving tires but they’re not conserving the bodies on these things right now they have no problem moving somebody quickly and that outside was that move is something I wasn’t expecting until maybe we get 20 25 laps into this race side by side here Samy Smith and the 81 on the outside now they get back in line guys watching this so far I you can see it kind of getting more single file up front but if you look back in the pack a little bit every corner has been three wide at some point in time and again here that’s really what this racetrack needs right the more oh oh he saved it Brennan p in the 44 got out of shape went up the racetrack 51 to Jeremy Clemens just a really good save there they’re still side by side again none of these expended cars were on the track earlier today their qualifying was cancelled but they were able to watch Cup qualifying still more contact happening and benetto in the 38 little contact there as we look back on the start of this race Justin alard just flying around the 21 I that’s a move of Bravery right there I mean I trust the racetrack that that it would have the grip uh that is that is brave yeah Brave and talented and that’s what Justin Aly is and he’s shown that many times you see the contact there and I think that’s the driver’s biggest concern is getting to that top side of that uh new pavement uh because that’s kind of where it’s the S hadn’t been much activity on there so far and still we’re seeing side by side racing here a little bit back in the field it’s all gued by 4/10 of a second Austin Hill running second four10 of a second back and then really it’s side by-side Racing for positions all the way back through the field of 38 Yeah Austin Hill’s done a great job to make this comeback because after when he went into turn three on the first lap he got put in a three wide situation and I thought that he was going to lose four or five more spots he came out of that and here he’s chasing the leader down learning quickly here at Iowa yeah Rick Austin Hill set his way loose to fire off but DJ you talk about this second lane and how it’s coming in I know you said who’s going to be brave enough to go up there I’ve heard a lot of spotters say the second Groove actually is kind of hanging on are you surprised it’s hanging on so well because it looks like there’s feet up there you know I I am surprised to say that um but I I think that because of all the unknowns we had no idea nobody really wanted to venture up there yesterday in practice so now some people are getting put in that situation and all of a sudden they’re saying oh wow this feels really good I can carry more speed right there and get back to the throttle sooner and we’re seeing it work one thing that makes me concerned about running that second Groove is that no one ran there in practice as you said that means there’s no rubber in the racetrack and so there might be grip there but there’s also danger there because that puts more heat and more wear on the tire so I don’t want to be the first guy up there I want somebody else to be there to make sure it doesn’t cause a problem and again the end of stage one is 75 laps away so unless there is an issue the Cruz will not be able to look at the tire wear until that first break now M patience running out here as we see the 20 putting the bumper to the 18 to move him up the racetrack so John Hunter neek a little bit impatient there with Sheldon Creed I’m not sure that he hit him but he definitely took the air off his Boulder that’s a that’s a pass you can make with this car works really well look at this the 81 has been able to get by that 21 so Chandler Smith moves up to Second just as we thought Austin Hill had figured something out and was closing the gap on Aly Chandler Smith makes the pass nice work man right back in here Chandler Smith does a really really good he’s out standing race car driver everywhere but the short tracks he kind of finds his limits quickly and and those limits are where he’s really really fast and and makes his way forward most of the time mentioned how Cory heit started 22nd he’s all the way up into the top 10 but now so much pressure being put on him by Riley Herbst hey Marty Rick he can just see how free that car is for Cory Heim but you got to give him a tip of the cap for moving up 10 spots even though Riley herbs just took the 10th position from him and he’s trying to hang on to that top 10 spot but Jeff how impressive has this young man been a full-time Truck Series driver kind of drives part-time here in the Infinity Series but he has been impressive when he’s been in that car he really has been impressive he’s turns turned a lot of heads you can see right here pass for the lead Chandler Smith to the inside and he’ll take the top spot away from allar now is their concern of really ni maybe saving the tires a bit not pushing them too much is that what Aly might be doing yeah that that’s hard to say I don’t Justin noar is not one I think to save tires too much yeah he likes to go pretty much hard at it but is he finding a situation that maybe his car is a little on the tight side that’s what allowed him to fire off on the outside and then run fast for a few laps and now falling back a little bit so that could create a problem that he might have have to watch if indeed it is then he’s going to have to be careful with the right front tire DJ you are reading my mind so is Rick that’s exactly what’s going on with Justin not saving the tiers plural saving that right front he radioed that into the crew had a condition he wasn’t really happy about and so he said I’m just going to save that right front at this point as for Chandler Smith my goodness what a guy in the short tracks this year he’s been so good he’s one he knows how to get around in a short track and he’s proving it once again today as he takes the lead yeah Chandler is proven how good he is but I think this is a great opportunity for his spotter Chris Lambert to say hey leading the race by two car links is the same as leading it by 40 let’s just run your pace off the seven car there is no need to go any faster than we have to do because of the fear of a tire failure there it doesn’t matter just sit there in front of the seven make sure we’re not hurt tires that’s what I think their shat should be at this moment [Music] after an early Surge from actually started first today Rick back in fifth he said it was loose to start with is it any better now listen in loose and it’s worse when they get TI it’s just like they’re able to get to the gas harder and earlier than you off of four one and two is not bad we’re able to cover tight to the asphalt but we’re leaving it early off of two so that is why Austin Hill has falling back D was trying to hold Sam May back there and hang in the top five Dave AJ alond dier has only gained one spot since the drop of the green flag telling his team that one and two are reasonable turns one and two Snappy lose in three and four so they told him you got to work on that opening up your Arc into three a little bit Kim Parker cerman started this race in the eighth position has dropped to 13th sometimes bounces down to the 14th position and that car is just ill too loose on entry and shaking the rear on breaking really hard but maybe the most significant problem he came on the radio probably 10 laps ago and said guys I have a significant vibration now for Jeff and DJ knowing this if it goes green has to go to lap 75 How concerned are you if your crew chief Patrick Donahue that your driver is telling you they have a vibration oh I think I’m very concerned uh you hear it a lot when you get to repaves and and in this case partial repay but it’s the whole corner and when you start here in situ ations like that there’s a couple of things that you don’t know you know is it the tire has he over overcooked the tire to this point or is is it a break situation or does it have nothing to do with that so you really don’t know the other thing is you hear so many times as this battle rages on you hear so many times a crew chief say hey it’s your call are you going to put that call in a 21y old hands you know who has very limited experience in the Infinity Series do I have a tire problem or is it something else that is that is a tough thing to ever put in the driver’s hands cuz you the driver doesn’t really really know either but younger drivers have an even tougher time Dave what about the seven of alar after leading 14 laps Rick he’s falling back to Fourth definely need a little bit of rightness to get through the middle like 81 but I feel like he’s burning his stuff up pretty good he needs it to be looser if he’s going to be faster in the seven car they’ll make that adjustment on the first stop so it’s Chandler Smith John Hunter neek Sheldon Creed 1 two three then algy and Austin Hill looks like algy is going to lose the spot to Hill that’s for fourth so after falling back Austin Hill moving the right direction again and you can see where he’s running he’s just committed to running the top clearly speed there spent some time on the RAC trck yesterday and like most RAC trcks DJ the the Top Lane is just it’s a bigger radius you don’t have to turn this steer wheel as much to get the car to do what you want it to do but everyone was afraid to go there cuz it was so slick but now the grip is there sorry je had a car hit the wall out of turn four that’s AJ alinger in the 16 who now is in the infield that looked a lot like right front went down I just caught them as he was going there he was running [Music] 10 Marty were we hearing anything on the radio prior to this well I I’ve heard that it was a right front flap from some other spotters but I have heard a number of spotters and a number of drivers Jeff talking about how they have a massive vibration in the right front including Cory H who had made it almost or into the top 10 I should say he said he felt like the right front was losing air so I think this caution while not good for the 16 and AJ alinger is good for the rest of the field they want to get a look at these good years the AMR safety crew immediately there to AJ alond Dinger as he came to a stop in front of the grand stands that that’s what we talked about DJ is is you know pace is important but when you have Tire issues you know you don’t want to be the first guy right and it’s nothing the only thing a driver can do is just slow a Down down right to keep it from happening but this situation just puts everybody in a very very difficult position see what happens yeah that car just will not turn he’s Gass up right there going hard off the corner and tire lets go there’s nothing you can do as a driver from that point hang on and hopefully it doesn’t hurt so so so the question now is what do you do as a team and a driver to to fix this problem you know and and you’re limited on the number of sets of tires that you have in the Infinity Series how many tires can we put on it’s a heat related issue uh so you know more air pressure probably ain’t going to help this problem there you know so what is the fix and the fix honestly is Pace yeah and and you’re just going to have to back it down a little bit and not be the first guy with a problem big hit big hit you know so that was so in in practice yesterday 31 laps by Justin alar was the most that anyone ran um this being a heat issue as we talked about where the tires are blistering from that point a blister is something that is hard for a driver at times Jeff as you can remember back sometimes you don’t realize that that’s actually happening and some and then it’s too late uh which I’m sure the AJ probably found out there he thought he might have a problem but what do you do you know is it really there but that was 34 laps right there we questioned when are they going to use this set of tires that they were extra set they were given well now we know it’s going to happen right now because you can’t take that chance yeah M as as you know we got the report from Marty you know we have multiple teams were communicating about vibrations and uh finally a tire you did have a problem and so now if you’re one of here’s what’s confusing right if you’re one of those drivers that had a vibration but didn’t have a tire failure what do you do the next time you get a vibration do you assume you’re not going to have another tire failure it’s a very difficult position let’s listen in on John Hunter and his communication with his team I feel like he should be coming he’s been pushing pretty hard but if he doesn’t come I feel like we definitely should stay yeah 10 I’d kind of prefer to stay I’m a little nervous about vibration yeah four I agree so he 81’s coming yeah I don’t see how you could stay out there after that 20 stayed out it’s he stayed out cuz he’s afraid he’s going run out of tires that that’s why he stayed if if he knew he had unlimited tires he’d be P right now Kim you see Sheldon Creed with that chassis adjustment just way too free said the car is good I just needed stability but I cracked the throttle to free both on entry and exit Dave andler Smith’s car very good obviously four fresh Goodyear tires they are not scuffed Marty Austin Hill just way too free going to put on some new good years here and they wanted to get a look at this right front tire he did not have a vibration but he could tell other people certainly struggling for fresh tires for Austin Hill and hopefully tightening up the 21 race off Pit Road is won by Chandler Smith and again quite a few came to Pit Road but there were at least a handful that stayed out we’ll get the lineup and we see what issues there for Brandon Jones racing isn’t four into the state of Iowa but it’s mostly been dominated by truck series The exity ser Arkham and art Series this weekend it’ll be the cup series that will be pipes of the nine of Brandon Jones he has had to go behind the wall and into the garage Kim what are we hearing about the nine of Brandon Jones Yeah you mentioned the smoke and then they had him check all the gauges at first the gauges looked okay but then as he brought it back in zero voltage on that Chevrolet of Brandon Jones right now you see him in the garage with a hood up trying to diagnose exactly what is causing that problem yeah voltage wouldn’t be wouldn’t cause smoke to come out so that tells me there’s something much bigger top three stayed out neek Clemens and Ryan Ellis so Steve just showed me something over here that in a crazy way if the 20 doesn’t have any blister or any problems at all this could actually be a good thing to recycle the tires because he has the heat they’ve cooled off and now they might be better and he to have an extra set of tires the field they had four sets lying these three that are out in front as the green flag has come back out they’ll still have those four sets everybody else in the field came to Pit Road and way up the racetrack goes the 20 of John Hunter NE he can’t can’t keep it down Jeremy Clemens taking the lead here at Iowa still struggling through three and four there was the 20 again sheld greed in that car in third place he had all kinds of trouble in the middle of the corner stacked that race stacked the field up now it’s starting to get sorted out a touch not much still two and three wide back a little further in the field about say I’m there in fourth place he was horrible yesterday comment from his crew chief is we’re so bad I don’t even know how to fix it and now he’s sitting there running in fourth here’s Aly clear at 20 now just a 98 even up Aly starting on the front row was able to lead a few laps without front for 14 laps at the beginning of the race now fighting back here in the seventh spot there’s NE he’s on Old Tires clemens’s leading the race I don’t think it’s a pace issue so much on Old Tires but you saw they didn’t take off well had no grip on the restart I’m not sure with what he experienced there and maybe he will try but he getting this situation again I’m not sure you can work the tires in enough to get them up and ready for that restart in that first Corner yeah they’re very dirty right they have tons of debris on them you got to really get them cleaned up Jeremy Clemens has made it work as far as the driver who stayed out and those are the older tires on the 51 Jeremy a lot of experience here this is his 20th start at Iowa Speedway riding along with Chandler Smith and that Toyota on board so watching watching this battle for the lead but you see so Jeremy Clemens isn’t getting into the corner quite as hard but he is able to accelerate back to the gas even quicker than the guy that was dominating this race Chandler Smith uh just before that caution so what he’s doing is working really really well but now Chandler Smith has the inside track to we see if that works for him good run on the outside by Clemens yeah now he now he’s like hey there’s grip up there Sheldon Creed dropped to the bottom of the racetrack and the number 18 he’s up to third Again Sam Mayer in the one right behind that 18 trying to find some clean air to run in you were talking about Sam Mar I’m watching that car go through the corner that thing is doing a nice job of rotating and getting back to the gas the they performed some Miracles overnight throwing the kitchen sink at it I believe I’ve heard crew chief say figure out how to make it go again we talked about John Hunter n all those old tires got a really bad restart but he’s recovered and he’s sitting here battling Clemens for fourth and has has good pace so new tires aren’t really a speed issue it’s more of a safety issue from not having a Lister and if they can get through this Marty they could be in good shape Jeff you wanted to see the tires that came off of these cards that pitted this is the right rear from Cory Heim this is nothing this is the right front from Cory Heim look at that tire I mean you talk about blistering I don’t know I’ve seen blistering that bad all the way down past the fabric on the tire it’s impressive that tire stayed up for Cory hind the entire run Dave and Marty early in the Run Justin Aly talked about trying to take care of that right front because he knew that he was having the same kind of issues so his right front came off the car and yeah severe blistering as well on his they got four fresh tires on there now and all guy has picked up three positions since the restart as for Chandler Smith the new leader of the race here’s what his crew chief said to him on the radio let me know when you look at where I’m curious all the rubber that was on the RAC trck I mean it’s still rubbered up pretty big here but yeah we need to sit there just we didn’t want to risk anything but our tires actually look really good there Chief Jeff mending told me this morning yesterday the tires that came off the car were as hot as he’s ever seen them but we didn’t have any blistering so we didn’t scuff so far it’s working out for Chandler Smith Chandler Smith trying to pull away from the field now as he has a little over a half a second lead over Sheldon Creed who’s moved up to Second Sam Mayer to third John Hunter NE fourth Jeremy Kem has fallen back to the fifth spot so Jeff as we look at this and we talk about so there wasn’t much fall off and we see John Hunter Nim be able to stay up there he has an extra set of tires but is that really going to be an advantage if he pits when others don’t it’s only an advantage if it’s Tire failures right you’re putting on tires to keep from having a tire failure but uh the point you made earlier that Steve made who’s hanging out in the booth with us he can’t talk cuz he has laryngitis yeah but he’s hanging out with us and you know the point that he made was hey like when you put a heat cycle on the tires sometimes they last longer so be interesting to see we just don’t know where this going the teams don’t know where it’s going either either that’s why it was a very very bold move for the 20 car to stay out knowing that that caution came out because someone had a tire failure he’s a team player you mentioned Steve yep he’s over there wave Steve he can’t talk but he’s got whiteboards so he’s giving us some notes and he dressed for the occasion as well he did he dressed up just in case impressive but yeah uh tough day yesterday couldn’t get get through both practices so we’re giving him the day off today he’ll be back for the race tomorrow yeah I only agreed to do this CU he said he’d give me a couple of golf lessons and help my golf game well you ought to take him up on that not that you’re bad but he’s really good at the moment Brett Moffett in the 19 another Iowa native trying to make the pass on Austin Hill here Moffett moving toward the front he’s up inside the top 10 from Iowa it’s the high ve perks 250 Chandler Smith still out in front almost a two second advantage over Sheldon Creed here we’re seeing Cole kuster in the double zero trying to work to the outside of John Hunter neek and that 20 a couple cars have gotten by the 20 in the last few [Music] laps 10 laps to go in this stage you have to wonder what a two things either those older tires are starting it’s starting to matter with speed or he’s trying to back it up a little bit just to make sure he doesn’t have a problem yeah we’re seeing this second Groove come in I’m watching Justin all guy or some really make a wide entry but how about the 20 car Dave yeah I think it was the first thought there because they just told John Hunter neek keep making it live keep making it Live Well you certainly want to do that if you’ve saved a set of tires and feel like that’s going to be in Advantage at some point in time over the field they have that yeah the last thing You’ want to do is play this strategy and it bites you right and you push hard blow a tire I’d rather I’d rather come in here running 10th or 12th have a set on the field knowing my car is not damaged neek is falling back now to eighth as we saw mof get by him on the outside eight laps to go in stage one there’s Jesse love on the outside of Jeremy Clemens J Jesse love trying to get past this 98 of Riley herps hearing a vibration on the 21 of Austin Hill Marty what about it yeah Rick it wasn’t just a few laps ago Austin Hill was up there battling in the top five he has fallen all the way back to 20th he said he’s pretty sure he has a right front tire coming up part or something Andy Speers crew chief said back it down as much as you can we only have a few laps left in this stage but Jeff this run right now only 28 green flag laps and R Austin Hill thinks he has a major issue getting so it’s definitely something yeah so so Marty the advice to him is correct you just have to back it down we cannot have a problem just I don’t care if you almost go a lap down you just we cannot get in a wreck right here Kyle SE goes by Austin Hill and again Hill has now fallen to 21st four to go in stage one Chandler Smith he’s feeling confident as he made the comment to the crew chief let me know what the tires look like they said said they looked good and he has pulled out to almost a 4C lead over second place Sheldon Creed as the cofin cautions come out and up into the wall or near the wall Jeb Burton in the 27 and a right front down for Burton doesn’t look like any contact to the wall so maybe caught it quick enough he was running 14 blow right front butt oh there’s been some contact yeah yeah it is it is scuffed up but it’s not he didn’t hit anywhere near like AJ hit see the right rear did did hit hard but parts of that tire coming apart let’s take another look but we’ve mentioned this new repay there’s so much heat being held in these tires so jebs on the straight and it blows right there and that’s you know look it’s never a good time to blow right front but if you’re going to blow one that’s that’s where you want to blow it because you’re already against the wall you can’t turn the car the car just quits turning and he it was fortunately for him he was already against it still damaged the car for sure but from from the impact for the driver that’s much better just doesn’t hit as hard and with this caution coming out it looks like only two uh two laps to go in the stage so this will probably end stage one Kim what about AJ alinger how’s he doing now out of the infield Care Center yeah AJ alond Dinger having a tire failure the first we saw of the day was the car giving you any feedback to indicate that there was a problem I mean not really the the circle Chevy started it started building a little tight but it wasn’t kind of out of the re realm of like being super tight I actually when I ran the bottom I was tighter even though there’s more rubber down there so I thought running the top was kind of helping the tire we we had some speed up there I’d found a good line so we’re stting to gain on that next group of cars but the end of the day disappointing but um can’t thank all the men and women at call racing enough we’re uh 16 group we’re we’re having a tough time so it’d be easy to quit and and just kind of give up on the year but we got plenty of racing left and uh some good tracks coming up so we’ll fight regroup and be ready again next week yeah AJ alinger currently eighth in the point standings as far as the playoff standings but this will be difficult to come back from after finish 37th and that that was a break for the 21 right he was talking about having an issue Austin Hill so you know that gets him to the end of the stage also John Hunter Nim who stayed out you know the 51 of Clemens who stayed out they did get to the end of the stage without having to use that set of tires neek actually finished in the top 10 with that Ninth Place finish as they’re getting ready to come across the stripe here for the end end of stage one and this will be Chandler Smith getting the win it’s his fourth stage win already of 2024 Creed having issues with right right sides but yeah I think we got a really good balance Chandler’s doing a good job managing it and uh hopefully we can keep in one piece and and stay front there you go it is a short track after all Rick oh yeah success for Chandler Smith two wins already in 2024 getting ready to choose as they’ll come to the choose Arrow after they cross a start Finish Line Chandler looks like he was drifting down but he’ll stay up top and restart on the high side Sheldon Creed in the 18 his wife cammi’s birthday today so after Sheldon Creed and DJ I don’t want to bring up bad memories but he’s getting close to tying you as far as number of second place finishes before a win uh you had 10 he’s had nine second place finishes already in his career you know there some days that second place is okay yeah but when it starts adding up and you get the double digits then you got to kind of look at things so fortunately we were able to hold it at that and things went on but he keeps putting himself in position it’s going to happen he’s going to get a win Mar how about the 21 we talked about how he thought he had a right front coming apart look at that right front for Austin Hill there’s one several blisters all the way around the ti Jeff Andy threers crew chief said I have no choice but to go up on air pressure for the rest of the day will that help this problem if they start with a higher air pressure yeah the thought is higher air pressure sometimes can help but it will hurt the performance of the car it’s a it’s not a compromise that the crew chief wants to make driver going to have to do his part too got right to the side of Chandler Smith there as they were coming into the restart Zone see if Chandler Smith makes that Highline work very very loose for the 18 Sheldon Creed falling back now as he tries to catch the handle of that race car oh that was for wide getting into and More contact Sam Mayer saves it I don’t know how they didn’t wreck fast race car today three wide on the bottom of your screen again couple rows back just heard one of the drivers mention really free now that was Cole kuster We Believe yeah you start making adjustments the track is changing so you’re going to go through that uh the sun has come out so the track is getting more temperature and so all of a sudden the things that you had going on the run before are completely different than what you’re doing now that you made those suggestion think Cole kuster is a little bit faster than Chandler Smith right now will there be tire conservation now after the crews have seen the wear that have come off of these cars I think I think if I’m driving the race car I’m having to I’m having to take it a little easy these first five six seven laps you know I say that but if you give up four or five spots because you don’t get a good restart then you have to go earn them back well then you’re hard on the tires then too so I think you try to save some Tire when you can oh and back up into the wall the 97 it’s so Shane Ben gurgen uh learning that’s a backup car trying to continue to learn in the xinity series sorry about [Applause] that he was running 25th he got got got himself in trouble yesterday was a 50-minute practice yesterday that’s very rare trying to take advantage of that to learn as much as he can trying to make the transition from a a road racer to an oval racer it’s difficult lost some practice yesterday as you mentioned Rick in a backup car and then in another wreck today and you know lap 88 of 250 there’s a lot of laps he’s there’s 163 laps he’s not going to be able to learn from today and that’s what you don’t want for young race car drivers he’s been so good all year about that about getting laps finishing the races and and I think he’s tied for second as finishing the most laps so far in the season first dnf because because of an accident it just gets around on him then when he went to catch it he caught the 29 as well so bla Perkins wrong place at the wrong time and this is hard on your confidence I don’t care how many races you one doing other things big hit there for the 29 you mentioned it it it’s still hard on your confidence and and it’s uh when you make these mistakes make them two days in a row you’re trying to learn it’s it’s you got to find a way to learn from it and move on but it is very difficult and there’s a spotlight shine shining down on Shane V gber and because of what he did a year ago at Chicago in the cup series his very first start he went out and won that race he’s won two exfinity series races already on road courses so much talent behind the wheel but this is foreign to him the short tracks the ovals things just aren’t the same as what he grew up and has done most of his life this was yesterday in practice that sent him to a backup car yeah and that was just a slight issue that he made there just got a little too high the time and then then the rear steps out and he did the right thing trying to you know turn the wheel a little bit to correct but it just sent him into the wall and so that’s kind of all spiral that once you do that and make that mistake then the rest of the weekend gets twice as difficult as what it was going to be anyway and Jeff you I I know this is Trivial but you sometimes have to learn how to wreck without wrecking your car right I mean this is a situation where he tried to catch it went right back toward the wall would it have been better off if he would have just turned left and locked it down well look he you’re right I mean you you you do over time you do learn in different situations what to do and but the only way to learn is do it and and I just think it’s a difficult transition which is why he’s in the exfinity series they didn’t take him straight to cup because you know he’s you know he has so much racing experience but not doing this and the only way to learn is to do it and it it’s not going to be an easy transition for him but he has great people around he’ve got people believe in him and given the time he can figure it out Shane Van gisbergen he’s raced Motocross quarter midgets carts and most well known for his supercars Championship races where he’s a three-time supercars Champion but today for the second day in a row he has wrecked the 97 this time he’s out of the race Chandler what can you tell us yeah sus up our dang year right we come out here and we’re one of the fastest cars on the racetrack again another mechanical failure I think over half our race has been over mechanical failures you know so we just gotta we got to try to stop some of this stuff from happening I know things things happen they’re all man-made race cars but at the end of the day it’s it’s going to hurt our season right and we’re going to be in a pretty much must-win situation here pretty soon if we don’t continue to get this stuff kind of fixed up on our end so um I hate it for palonis I hate it for Menards um like said I I enjoyed racing on this new Surface that Iowa has put together for us um just right there broke a valve I I don’t really you know even know how how it happened honestly we were in a kind of a tight situation on Pit Road um and I had to use the motor a little bit harder to spin it around but nothing out of the ordinary uh nothing you know over over revved or anything so I I don’t know how that would have happened but we’ll get it back to the shop I guess and diagnose it and uh we’ll try to go go win the next two he mentioned tough luck out of the 14 races six dnfs in 2024 as a matter of fact the third straight race with a dnf for Brandon Jones and you see him below that cut line 12 positions available for the playoffs and Brandon Jones right now 77 points out of that 12th position with his difficult finish today in 36 Dave Rick with everyone having Tire troubles it hasn’t exactly been a cakewalk for Chandler Smith the leader listen I struggle like once I just go off in there right when I touch that new payment it’s just a four-wheel slide just hold on for dear life like you can see it every time I Barrel off in there just there he goes so handling it is Chandler Smith but Jeff Burton sometimes if you’re the best of the chaos cars out there you can go win the race well you’re right it only matters it doesn’t matter how your car drives it just has to be better than everybody else’s and you know that’s easy to say sitting up here because as race car drivers we want it to be great but when you are complaining about your car it’s real uh and I think it’s important for the crew chief and the team not to ignore him because somebody’s going to get better yeah and if you get complacent and you think hey we’re good enough and you don’t keep trying to make your car better that’s when they come at you cuz everybody else knows you have the fastest car they have to do something different you can’t get complacent most recent driver out of the race Shane Van gisbergen is standing by with Dave Rick it’s been a long weekend for Shane crashing practice crash now what bits you this time yeah just got loose um guy on top of me and uh you know we just stayed out got back on lead La getting more and more confidence and um just got loose and tried to sort of spin in the middle and someone collected me so yeah my fault again got it for the call racing guys um two cars ruined there and um yeah kubot Chevrolet thanks for everyone supporting us but yeah just gotted to do that again what boxes did you check off on the positive side for your short track program that’s the first time we’ve crashed out of a race really so that’s not the positive no it’s gutting but yeah learned a lot all weekend and you know we had actually had some speed yesterday which was cool so um yeah but the car today a little bit difficult so try again next week difficult weekend for this true Pro guys yeah it was Kyle weatherman that got him when he was coming back down the race and racetrack sending back up into the wall so unfortunate there as we see the chws and it’ll be Smiths Sammy Smith on the inside Chandler Smith on the outside remember early in the race when the 20 car stayed out on tires and he had a restart and he went from the bot he went all over the racetrack he had no grip whatsoever most of these guys have restarted on stickers for the majority of this race now everybody is on on tires on scuff tires and it’s going to be interesting to see how they drive with hot tires with all that rubber stuck to to them they do not make the same grip as they did earlier no this is going to be wild right here I mean we thought these other more wild than what we’ve already seen I don’t see how it can’t be which lane do you want obviously several drivers believe the outside’s a way to go let’s see how it happens Chandler Smith and Sammy Smith through the restart Zone green flag back in the air momentum paying off for Chandler Smith on that High Line But Here Comes Sammy Smith back on the inside yeah that was a really good corner by Sammy Smith right there to to be able to keep his position through the bottom didn’t overdrive getting in there now he’s battling for the lead Chandler talked about his car sliding around that’s exactly what happened got in the corner it just would not stick Sammy back to the door and sliding up the race track he’s able to hang on to it though they stay door too Zam Mayer in the one looking to put a little pressure on Samy Smith as we see Cole kuster on the high side clear Sammy and move up to that second spot yeah Sam Mar being very aggressive that was a three- wide pass that he made there to get himself positioned now trying to continue to go forward really getting off of turn two do very very well how about Ross Chastain in this 92 car on the outside of the one he’s found himself up in the top five able to clear there’s Cory Hyman the 26 down on the bottom of the racetrack on the inside of John Hunter neek well you’re right it’s chaotic Sam Mayer to the high side now trying to get by Riley hers on the bottom of your screen and on the top of the screen the double zero uster he was trying to get on the outside of the 81 and Chandler just wasn’t having it Sheldon Creed falling back down in the 18 as Justin Aly is going to go by on the outside a little more pressure being added by the eight of Sammy Smith on the top of your screen trying to close in on Co kuster completely different lines for Chandler Smith and Cole kuster Chandler way down close to the white line Cole kuster running through that second almost third lane in turns one and two yeah they both make a high entry into the corner but the 81 goes straight to the bottom where Cole kuster is doing what you were talking about easier on the tires he’s standing in that second uh Lane right now where he’s not having to turn the wheel as much so we’ll see if that P benefits for him and uh it’s better for his tires later on it’s been one of the topics this weekend is that heat in the tires we’ve seen blistering already AJ alinger had a tire failure put him into the wall and now 28 laps into stage two and the top two are staying pretty close together here with Chandler Smith and Cole kuster and Cole has gotten outside working and as us said DJ it’s all about the entry right see how he how he’s able to enter High earlier in the race when guys were running the second lane they were kind of entering maybe a a car width lower and kind of drifting up into the second lane now the confidence is being built that there’s enough grip to enter [Music] High didn’t take Chandler Smith long to adjust his line there too Parker rlof on the bottom of your screen on Pit Road I think we just heard him say zero power there’s something smok in the front of it smoking the cockit smoking the cockit he was running 17th and now they’re going to bring the extinguisher over just to make sure was smoke inside of the cockpit Jordan Anderson racing not having a good day chb blew a tire in the 27 car now the 31 with a mechanical Parker climbs out of that car the eight of his crew so day over for Parker red CL how about Cole kuster Dave Ricky had to kind of regroup after that last time he tried to pass Chandler Smith for the lead not going to be not going to happen with he RAC this here you’re better than him just re her back in here we’re running back down you’re better than him so I kind of think that maybe Chandler may have pushed Cole up into the stuff where he didn’t want to be so Cole backed off and he’ll get him again but uh tell him I owe him one what does that mean DJ well just you putting your memory bank in case you’re Racing for the win later on W feel so bad about making a move then log the number 81 yes Cole kuster won the championship a year ago but you have to remember he drives for Stewart hos racing which just a couple weeks ago mentioned that they will be closing their doors I talked to Cole kusters father Joe kuster who runs steuart hos racing and he said that they’re going to have an announcement possibly in a week maybe a little bit more as to what the future of the Infinity Series program is going to look like uh for Cole kuster as well as Riley Herz and then some of the other teams that they have an alliance with well theyve put good race cars on the racetrack and and uh you hope that they can return because they’ve been a valuable part of this experity series see May falling back now in the one on the bottom of the racetrack that we see Justin Aly was able to clear him there’s Cory Heim again we see him on the outside of that 18 of Sheldon Creed we talk about Chandler Smith who is showing how impressive he is and how good his car is he’s pulled out now got gosh 20 25 car links on second place uh he has a teammate back there Iowa boy Brett mofet there uh running fourth right now doing a really really good job here uh right up in the mix and seems to have a good car this afternoon we heard CH we heard kuster talk about his displeasure with Chandler Smith you see the battle here Sammy Smith underneath kuster Custer scar has gotten away from him here his scar is just not driving as good as it was early in the Run all right here’s why he was mad see he gets a run on the outside he throttles up it’s able to roll the middle so he’s planning on going on the outside and Chandler just kind of comes up the racetrack and just takes a little bit of a lane away wasn’t an egregious move by any mean but Cole feels like right here he’s got the spot and he just came up a little bit took some air off his car what do you think DJ is that one that you mark in your memory banks or do you think there nothing happened there I mean everybody’s a little different but I didn’t see him having a spot I mean he didn’t even have you know his front fender and and bumper up to the quarter panel there I I can’t see anything that the leader did wrong in that case Samy Smith to the eight oh I’m sorry go ahead the second place guy never agrees with that that’s right exactly well of course Riley herps on the outside of the seven racetrack and get into the 98 of rley herps that’s a battle for the seventh spot looked like mayor lost the car and went up the racetrack close call for both drivers that might have been an intentional drift really he thought he might get in there and be able to slide up he’s carrying speed his car is a little bit better right now moving forward I think he thought he could clear that but he wasn’t Cory Heim just in front of him let’s take another look at that one and 98 let’s see what happens here so this his first time kind of gets squeezed into the wall didn’t seem to bother him any there kept speed here making oh no he did he had little issue right there getting into the corner we have a caution 07 around and Patrick emmerling brings out this caution fourth caution of the day and you heard him say fire it up he was running 25th just on the inside of the five of Anthony Alfredo he’s trying to refire it yeah so many times yeah so many times when you spin I don’t know I know why but they don’t fire back up it takes you know 30 seconds or so I don’t know what happens I never did understand that uh these you know they but it takes a while for them to fire up in many occasions it may fire up ultimately crew chief spiders yelling let’s get going let’s get going I’m trying switches on I’m turning it over it won’t go he does not want to get out of the car he wants to get a push maybe they can roll start it so Sam Mayer Who currently is running in the 11th spot just in front of Riley herb let’s listen to their radio reminding you of that okay yeah you got to focus son that’s probably my more my fault than his Mar I was an aggressive Clear DE feed right re to get going we’re all right well I mean I think we saw from the replay or what I saw I think I thought he really tried to drive it in there and was just going to try to clear himself basically and move up and carry the speed but he got actually got loose and he had to correct his car and that’s what got him up in that position to begin with this is a turned up temperature kind of racetrack day you know what I mean everybody’s aggressions way up so it’s going to be managing it of being aggressive but not stepping on your toes right like I tried to aggressive clear you there like he hung on you we tried to slide to like the whole thing right everybody just seems like they’re pissed pit Road’s open here that was spotter Kevin Hamlin and he he said exactly what what you just said DJ he tried he was wanting him to slide him get real aggressive on Corner entry question is do you pit here we should ask our crew chief he’s shaking his head no because he can’t speak well you need you know we haven’t seen any Tire issues lately so you see one car coming several behind him but team’s getting more comfortable that tires can run the distance a few cars did make their way onto Pit Road including Parker cerman Kim and Parker was reporting a very significant vibration as crew chief Patrick Don said is it just a chatter he said no there is something wrong so he did bring Parker bound there are scuffs going on this race car right now Mary so here’s the deal if they’re going to put on stickers here cam you see Brett Moffett bottom right of your screen Austin Hill bottom left of your screen putting on stickers here leaves you one set for the left of rest of the race and there’s 24 to go here in stage two so an interesting move and also of note for both Austin Hill and Brett Moffett they did report vibrations on the last run and Brett Moffett from Seven that was the first car to come on to Pit Road uh we’ll see how it ends up working out for him as we get ready for the restart Iowa sports are flourishing from the Field of Dreams to Caitlyn Clark the greatest sensation right now in sports all the way to Newton Iowa and the Iowa Speedway this weekend side of the Infinity Series as well as the Cup Series race this weekend packed both today and tomorrow sold out crowds here in Newton Iowa as we’re getting ready for the choose and the restart Chandler Smith Sammy Smith running one and two Cole kuster is third still it’ll be 21 laps to go in stage two when they come back around to the line Ross Chastain running fourth Jesse love is fifth Rick you mentioned the crowds that’s that’s something that’s always happened here they they love to come to this Racetrack and they come from far and wide to to be here and watch the racing always helps that you have great short track racing but it’s nice to see them here once again for a fantastic weekend there is a lot of racing that takes place in this area as a matter of fact we heard Ricky senhouse Jor he taking his whole team to Knoxville a dirt track that’s just south of here just a little ways and that is always packed but the fans definitely love racing here in Iowa Kim rof out of the race for the day we heard the symptom on the radio lost all power what was the cause yeah the uh the line or the one of the power wires it like shorted out and burnt all the way from the battery to underneath the dash and started on fire so it got uh a lot there was just a bunch of smoke and stuff and I felt like we were making a car a lot better like like we struggled a little bit at the start just like completely different from practice and I think that we got the car there like I felt like the best we’ve been all day like I think we were working towards making the cars fast as Infinity the internet and they like making good gains and I felt like we were up to like we’re up to like 15th there and just gaining on everyone and then uh we had some bad luck Parker has an early end Marty to the day and what is his first start in any series at Iowa so K we talked about those drivers that did Pit we reported that Austin Hill and Brett Moffett both had report vibrations that’s why they came down Pit Road I want to show you the right front from the 19 of Brett Moffett and there are significant blisters on this right front tire what I’m surprised by Jeff is that the it hasn’t gotten better as rubber has laid on the racetrack this is almost all the way down to the fabric on this right front for Brett Moffett in terms of Austin Hill he just asked Andy SED as crew chief he said is there anything we can do about this right front issue or is this how it’s going to be for the rest of the day they really haven’t contended back in the top 10 since they went higher on air pressure and Andy Street told him I’m just going to have to keep going higher on air pressure Jeff and as you mentioned that takes away performance from the car it does Marty and you know setups matter like driving style matters you know not every setup is the same in these race cars and some are easier on tires than others and some drivers are easier on tires than others so the combination in the 21 car they’re just not comfortable with like it just we don’t have an answer and so when you get in that situation where you don’t have an answer you have a decision to make and that’s slow down and that is not it’s going to be very difficult to keep track position and slowing down at the same time but as the race goes on things can get better to Marty’s Point sometimes the track gets rubbered up it takes a little heat out of the tires things can get better but you can’t be in denial and act like you don’t have a problem when you clearly do chws taking place now and the Smiths will both stay in the outside Lane now so that puts Cole kuster on the front row on the inside Lane Jesse love will fall in behind him John Hunter neek Cory Heim and Riley herps making up that inside row can see you know a lot of lot of drivers favoring that outside line Dave Chandler Smith spotter told him he was driving the car too deep into turn three here was Chandler’s response my smart self even though it has a happen yet keeps being optimistic thinking it’s going to be gripped up when I get down to turn three so i s it off in there and it disappoints me every time so his smart self is probably going to back up the corner a little bit better a little bit more if he wants to stay ahead of the side by side Sammy Smith on this restart it disappoints him every time and he’s the one making the decision yeah well all I know is he’s the fastest thing here so I’m not sure still out want to do something different still out front we’ll see how Cole kuster does on the inside now of Chandler Smith as we come back for the [Applause] restart great launch by Chandler Smith Cole kuster struggling to the inside Jesse love making it three wide all the momentum loss there for the double zero and three cars got by him it’s Chandler Smith Samy Smith one and two Ross Chastain is third Aly is fourth Co kuster now has stopped falling back at the fifth position that’s kind of what we’ve seen is that driver that first one on the inside have the problem but it’s the driver that’s right behind him and that was Jesse love and this Cole kuster was able to jump up still in the top five uh Jesse love is just now well he’s behind a four wide group going into turn one there but he’s lost like six or eight spots mhm top three NOS to tail now as Chandler Smith will run the middle of the racetrack through three and four look at Chastain he is almost in the old asphalt on Corner entry Here Comes Sammy Smith for the lead can’t make the pass Chandler Smith on the outside pulls back by John Hunter on the outside of this group yeah he was all but wrecked off of turn two look at Jaz D he keeps pushing that entry into the corners he’s higher than anybody this and this is a familiar theme the 81 has trouble in the restarts they all get stacked up behind him and then as time goes by he gets better and better yeah it’s kind of like if he can fend off that first run and attempted pass that they make at him then he’s able to kind of settle into what he wants to do and pull back away Cory Heim has made his way we see him on the bottom of the screen he’s made his way up into the seventh spot now and we mentioned at the top of the show yesterday in practice Cory Heim was very impressive very fast in practice but because there was no qualifying he had to start this race in 22nd now he’s worked his way up here where he’s competitive in the top 10 fighting for that six spot with Aly right now Cory Heim so talented behind the wheel he’s running full-time in the Craftsman truck series four wins already this year out of the 12 Races they have run so we saw a wild restart the two of Jesse love restarting in third position watch this aggressive move it’s not always a great idea to try to make a pass Watch What Happens has good forward momentum entering the corner kuster loses the bottom love goes all the way to the apron and look what it did to him it just killed his momentum so he saw an opening there and as a driver man that’s when you want to go but when you have to put the left sides all the way on the apron there’s no grip there so yeah you want to be aggressive but you have to be calculative when you do it and then a lap later here’s nimach just all but wrecked right there did a great job of saving that race car and here we see Richard CH racing cars NOS to tail with Jesse love just in front of Austin Hill so I kind of wanted to see those few cars that did Pit and took on tires uh during that last caution how much forward were they going to be able to go here and how hard were they going to go knowing now they’ve got a a set of Tire deficit once again yeah so the question would be with only eight to go will they you know could they come down Pit Road you know Steve thinks maybe they could come down Pit Road and just do fuel not do tires and get some track position back Kim what about the two well it’s interesting how aggressive he was on that restart because during the caution he told his team he had a vibration and he had been trying to save tires during that last run his crew chief came on the radio and said we only have two sets left I cannot bring you down so despite having what he thinks is a tire issue the ability to show that aggression on a restart we’ll see what he’s got the next seven laps for Jesse love and he’s trying to get by Cole kuster who right now is running in the ninth position kuster has fallen all the way back to almost falling out of the top 10 after starting up front after this most recent restart racing the 21 car right here he’s picked up six spots since the restart things are getting heated right here is these these two are teammates the 20 doesn’t care 20 yeah the 20 doesn’t care wow John Hunter neach got into the bumper there of Austin Hill Here Comes mat to benedetto in the 38 on the outside it’s three wide again and the 19 on Mett you know he pitted on lap 126 Austin Hill hit on a lap 2 126 they have newer tires than everybody in that they’re racing with Sam Mayer has been able to sneak by Sammy Smith for the second spot as we have less than four laps to go before the end of stage two and these teammates continue Austin Hill on the inside Jesse Love Now falling back on the outside so Hill makes the pass there’s almost remniscent of Martinsville a year ago except it was Creed who was behind the wheel of the two John Hunter neek also being able to clear Jesse love now love fighting back on that high side Cory Heim moving up he’s sixth trying to take the spot away from Creed which would be fifth way up the racetrack Aly catches it before he gets into the wall there’s no one close to him from behind so he may get away with that with only two laps left he’s wiggling his car right now he’s just trying to get the rubber when you run out of the groove all that build up that’s on the racetrack that debris gets on your tires he’s just trying to clean that off regroup last two laps [Music] in the final lap as the 81 has gone and we see the two of love into the wall now blew a right front tire he talked about having a vibration prior to this restart they were afraid to pit because they were going to run out of tires and he was pushing hard and he blew a right front tire right in the middle of three and four and so he comes to rest up against the wall as the stage will end with Chandler Smith winning stage one and stage two here at Iowa Sam mayor and the one is going to end up second let’s take another look at what just happened though so Chandler Smith is going to get the win you see the pressure being put on there by the 10 but it was the two of Jesse love the right front going down and into the wall he goes hard coming up next on USA it’s NASCAR America post race followed by US Olympic team trials swimming and again that’s where they built the Olympic siiz pool right in the seven8 mile short track there’s the damage to the right side of Jesse Love’s car and remember that’s a teammate of Austin Hill who has had complications all day with vibration ations he pitted a few laps ago right so you would like to stay out here or just do fuel not put tires on but your teammate just blew a right front tire and his day is over because of it so that makes this a very difficult decision I don’t think they going to put tires on it with this few laps that they have on it but he’s going to have to leave this restart and be really really calm if he decides not to put tires on it Dave Jeff late in that run Cole kuster finally radioed his team as to why he went from second all the way back to ninth he said I had a vibration I just had to take it easy it was the same kind of vibration that Jesse love had he did the right thing just can’t be in denial Jack Rous taught me that early in my career it’s you you have to accept the situation even if you don’t like it if you just act like it’s not happening you will it will end your day so on the hook is Jesse love they’ll pull that back into the garage and try to get it back in the holler I mentioned this just moments ago Indianapolis yeah that’s Lucas Oil Stadium where the Colts play and in Indianapolis they’re getting ready to figure out who’s going to head to Paris for the Olympics for the US Olympic team the issue Perkins is out Ben gisbergen also involved in a rre Kyle weatherman out of the race Parker redl had an issue they had a fire inside the car and now Jesse love you see drivers swerving their tires you wonder why they do that on Pit Road that’s so they’ll break so you can get to pit your pit box as quickly as possible and be aggressive Kil him and not slide through pit box and for Iowa native Sammy Smith there at the top in the eight car he’s just still a little bit free starting to get a little break fad so they’ll pull some tape to help that he asked them help me on the short run and I will manage it on the long run as a little slow it looks on the right side of that change Dave you saw Chandler Smith Challenge on those restarts Snappy it takes a while to come in they’ll just for that Marty Marty Lindley said Sam May’s run to Second at the end of stage two was fun to watch a little tight for Sam may also said the breaks haven’t been much better we’ll see where they can leave Pit Road here is the 81 and8 are already down there goes Sam May leaving inall zero tires there we saw for Ryan SE SO gas only wins the race off of Pit Road but those that changed four tires it was Chandler Smith DJ during pre-race I think Marty asked you a question as far as what is a bushel of corn weigh you remember 50 56 pound yes I wouldn’t have got close Iowa produces 2.4 billion bushels of corn every year that’s actually three times more than the whole whole country of Mexico producing so Iowa Corn very important to not only the country but the world Marty let’s chat with Marty Lindley you said your drivers run up to Second there in stage two was was fun to watch but we’ve seen a little bit of damage on the one car you concerned for the right rear maybe the Bodywork is getting into the tire yeah no I don’t think so everybody’s doing a good job on a road to Chevrolet and uh just appreciate all the hard work we’ve had we’ve been up and down all day you know we got beat around on the racetrack a little bit so uh I feel like we got our car the best we can get it right now the 81’s awful tough so we’ll see what happens I was praising you earlier today for your overnight changes how would did you expect this at all because as bad as you were in practice yesterday do you have a shot to win this race yeah I know it’s uh we just went to work last night and put our heads down and and made a plan and we’re executing it right now Marty Lindley old school one of the best in the garage area and he’s got Sam May in a spot to get a win here Iowa today and Marty we’re seeing the 98 back on Pit Road and they’re putting some tape on the front what happened here as we look on Pit Road it looked like some contact here oh yeah there’s Ross Chastain’s coming out you can see some contact I didn’t really get where I get I did see him working on the left front a little bit with it but I guess the maybe the front was something that they weren’t going to take the time before and now just had that opportunity to do that from something previous and the chws taking place now as we’re getting ready for the restart 91 laps remaining in this race we’re in the final stage as Ryan SE again came in and just got fuel Josh Williams actually stayed out under this most recent caution that’s why he’s up front in row one so now if you look at row two which we think are certainly two of the faster cars you getting the lead has a lot to do with what’s going to happen in front of you like which you see the 81 chose the top the one chose the bottom and what the one is thinking is hey if the 39 gets in there doesn’t doesn’t stay the bottom they’ll drift up the racetrack I can run the bottom and there’ll be nowhere for the 81 nowhere for the 81 to go right so it it’s it’s just a gamble you don’t you can’t control what they’re doing in front of you but all you can do is look at the cars in front of you and make your best guess on what Lane you want to pick we’ll see how Josh Williams does on the outside of Row one with Ryan seag on the inside again older tires for both these cars the quick move to make a three wide for the lead the 81 of Chandler Smith and a great start for Sam mayor it happened exactly the way he needed it to SE wasn’t able to stay on the white line now’s May up the racetrack but still May came out in front of the 81 clearly he wanted to lead but to get in front of the 81 was a big big game Josh Williams also able to stay in front here comes Sheldon Creed in the 18 trying to get by the 81 and remember as bad as 81 is driven on restarts it’s worse now because now he’s behind other cars cars on the outside of him it will not be better in this situ a he continues to fall back so Chandler Smith after dominating stage one and stage two has continued to fall back he’s falling out of the top 10 right now as quickly as he went back we see Cory Heim on the inside in the 26 trying to take seven away from John Hunter Nema check see at the top of your screen the 11 car he got in there wasn’t able to stay on the bottom Josh Williams got all the way up the racetrack into the old asphalt kuster able to get by see Iowa native Brit Moffett in the 19 also passing here’s three wide Cory Heim with Austin Hill in the middle as Josh Williams Falls back another spot oh Cory H just ran the 21 way up the RAC trck Austin Hill is not going to like that don’t know if he’ll be able to get back to his bumper though Cory Heim showing some great speed here in Iowa we’ll see if he can work his way up from Seventh with John Hunter Nim in front of him Brett Moffett just in front of them and Cole kuster it’s Ryan SE still out front after a gas only Pit Stop Sam Mayer running in second and 85 laps to go with that being the situation Steve can they make it on fuel thanks for that input Steve he shook his head yes so we did get that input from Mr lard how about SE right here this you know remember he finished second at Texas in a side by side battle with s May lost on the last lap it’s you know this car has speed and you get them track position this will not be an easy pass for Sam May yes I think the question here is how long will the tires that aren’t new uh as many others have and the the car Sam Mar chasing how long is he able to continue this pace or does it uh slow down but I think this is something a calculated risk that they were willing to take Kim absolutely willing to take in fact Crew Chief Matt noise came on the radio told Ryan they felt like they had fresh enough tires to not take any on the last last stop they were last in on 126 for four tires took fuel only on the last stop and lap 156 Ryan remember has finished three times in the runner-up spot in his career once here at Iowa a second time and then also earlier this season at Texas who did he finish second to the guy that just passed him Sam mayor up the racetrack Ryan SE win and that allowed mayor to get by as well as Sheldon Creed boy I see Sheldon Creed running second again DJ and I think can it be another one could he get to 10 or could he get the win today yeah you know I I think he’s got the car that he could possibly win with here today knowing that probably too that this stage is more than likely if if things work out you’re going to get another fresh set of tires and I think that that’s where he is really shown to be the best whenever he does have the newer tires on so this could be his day Ryan SE back in third how did it happen he got into turn three tried to carry a little a little bit too much Pace got loose washed up the racetrack and once you get out of that new asphalt it is save your race car time at that point you’re no longer trying to make pace you’re just trying to keep from Wrecking from first to Third and just one corner you know what Ryan SE and his team did there was one of the three options that Steve had on his whiteboard over here as they were going under that caution the the drivers and teams that had come in previously uh in that stage at 126 I believe it was got tire so they could come in and just get fuel only uh they could come in and change SP on the other tires knowing they would cool those off and put them back on but SE and them decided that they wanted to do try the fuel only option and we’ll see how this works out at by the end of the race for them here’s Chandler Smith the most frustrated man on the racetrack at the moment won both stages did not get a good restart which he’s struggled with all day but in the back of the pack they just ganged up on him and now battling for 12th Place so Chandler Smith fighting to get back to the front where he was very comfortable up there dominant performance in stage one and stage two another driver that ended up out of the race after a tire failure Jesse loves standing by with Dave and Jesse we heard you say o on the radio you okay yeah I’m all right I uh told myself when I got out if I want to do this for a long time I gotta be uh tough to take some bigger hits so I’ve never seen it on the TV but uh yeah it was a pretty big one but I’ve wrecked and sprint cars many of times and they kind of toughen you up for for days like this so did you have any warning at all I mean they kept you out so you knew you had to Baby a little bit yeah I I knew that they were chunked but we were Chunk in a mold day and it was fine um I Tred to fill that hole in that restart with me in the double zero and try to get close to the lead and I think that might have maybe punctured a little hole in it because it started getting really really tight and it’s getting Tighter and Tighter and I thought I had a tire going down or close to it and then um once it got really bad it just blew on me so I had a I had an inkling that it was coming but at the same time we know tires are chunking so we don’t want to come down Pit Road and have no issue so just a really fast wheel in Camaro proud of all my guys today car was his V the internet just um need to keep on plugging away with the speed that we have and start putting together finishes Jesse glad you’re okay by the way quick update on the Chandler Smith situation falling out of the top 10 there is no update he’s been silent on the radio you know frustrated that he’ll try to work his way back forward top of your screen you’re seeing Cory Heim and John Hunter neek going when you bring it to Pit Road mfet said oh yeah we got a problem I’m coming to Pit Road they’ve run 26 Laps on this run Cam and MAF had to come to Pit Road he thinks he has a right front going down and Marty another driver that’s been plagued by vibrations through the course of this entire race has been Parker cerman the last time he had a vibration they did bring him down under caution when the tires were taken off Patrick Donahue said they look okay Parker thinks he might be going crazy he can’t decide if it’s maybe a tire issue or a break issue as you see Ryan SE on Pit Road right now taking a fresh set of tires remember he last stopped for tires on lap 126 so needed those fresh good years for the end of the race saw the crew of the 19 Moffet having to push him out of his stall so now with this Pit Stop by the 39 he’s going to be scored at least a lap down probably two when everything Cycles back through so so how do you play this if you’re the Sam May if you’re Creed they’re both being told Save Tires right Save Tires well how do you save tires and if you’re Creed keep say a may you know close and how do you if you’re Sam a Save Tires and keep Creed from Catching you so it is really this takes some discipline and I think for two young drivers some outside influence will be really important here to crew chiefs spotters look here’s the big pitcher give them a direction and demand that they do it I think that’s what Young Drivers will be best served in this situation Marty how about the tires for the 19 what was the issue there yeah we wanted to get a look at the right front for Brett Moffett he was right there’s the flat spot or not the flat spot there’s the blister right right there for Brett mofet so he was correct they had to come to Pit Road for that they are now down two laps you know Jeff I heard one crew chief talked to his driver about trying to slowly bring in the tire temperature as much as they could could that be a factor of why this is still happening as late as it is in this Infinity race yeah we’ve heard a lot about you know teams talking about putting air pressure in tires the track rubbering up I just don’t know how any of that helps I mean this is a I go hard this is a heat related issue and so the only thing that what makes heat is speed what makes heat is pushing the car hard what make speed is an aggressive setup so you just at this point fine all day so if you want to you know just manage here till about 30 or 40 to go that’ll be fine so so how do you manage it and and you just heard that communication Cole kuster’s talking about he’s got some shake he’s got a little vibration what do I do he wants some help but the the crew chiefs can’t look at the tires in this situation they don’t know what you have going on either so it really is a guessing game you know Steve had a great point because he is a great former crew chief but he said putting air in the TIR is not going to help especially when we see these blisters in the center of the tire you know that’s not helping there whenever you already blow it up and make the center bigger may make it worse yeah d this is a great battle we’re watching here John Hunter nich on the inside Cole kuster on the outside absolutely kuster said he had a vibration and then that radio back that we just caught a clip of do you want me to go hard uh he is right now racing John Hunter John Hunter is uh okay but says he may have a little bit of a vibration too so racing and saving it’s it’s like a fuel save except this one if you don’t do it right it could put you in the wall well they run 35 straight laps here that’s the longest of the day so we’re in Uncharted territories in a in a very difficult situation there a lot of racing left to go I I still think you have to save some Tire here I have I just think you got to take some Pace out of the car with the tire with the tire nothing wrong with the tire that they can see really that’s Co kuster you can hear the vibration in his voice so John Hunter Nea check like the tire it’s just like theen but there was with the tire nothing with the tire Josh Williams on Pit Road now in the 11 right side tires only for the 11 of Williams a lot of cars on you know just coming down Pit Road we just seeing four or five we got another one is on Pit Road they’re going to do a four tire stop for de benedetto Cory Heim closing in on kuster so we see Williams getting back up to speed now with those right side tires Williams scored two laps down to benedetto one lap down and currently 16 drivers still on the lead lap there was a cringe well we both limp and all kinds of stuff because the thing days like that yeah reminds you these 3,500 plus pound cars slamming into a wall like that there’s this is a very dangerous sport still yeah even with the safer barriers now and you know I know the impact is diminished somewhat but it still is just so violent so we had a tire failure at about 41 Laps on that run currently there’s 47 laps to go it’s going to take a while obviously to get this cleaned up but we’re still not going to be in a position where everybody knows they can make the race without another tire failure it’s still going to test some patience uh cuz a lot remember people were on Pit Road that had Tire fail years that if they hadn’t have been on Pit Road they would have had the same situation so you know unless this caution goes a very long time this is still going to put the teams and drivers in a vulnerable position difficult season for Aly even though he has the most playoff points of any of the drivers and a win this now is his fourth dnf for an accident this year so Aly his father’s day weekend not ending the way he wanted it too getting ready for pit stops and because of the tire wear that has taken place we we know that virtually everyone will be on Pit Road to get fresh Goodyear Tires Kim including Rick Sheldon Creed from the second position he said I fired off a little edgy but to run the leader Pace I need to be a little Freer in the corner he added though I can go faster but I feel like I’ll eat up the front tires if I do four fresh goodye tires to no go fuel for Sheldon cre Dave John Hunter NE gives up third four sticker tires for him it takes 30 laps for his car to come in they’ll make an adjustment to try to make that better Marty Sam May said the fire off is terrific leave it alone I don’t want adjustments they lost four spots the last time down pit road because Sam May slid too long in the stall he slids too long again and he can’t get around the 10 he’ll lose more spots this time yeah it looks like the back end of the 10 of Daniel D was out there ways that had to make Sam Mayer make a hard right turn to get out of his pit stall neek grabbs two spots Creed holds on to second on that race off of Pit Road Sam Mayer losing those two spots coming off of Pit Road so watch this Sam a gets in his pit and as us he slid the tires and got in there a little bit deep he could have stopped much shorter there was nobody in the Box before he got to his so he could have come in there gotten turned been shorter the rear bumper could have been another four or five feet back in the pit box and then he would have been at a launch quicker small things make a difference s Mayer has never won on a short track but was running up front for quite a few laps has been up front 38 laps today we’ll have a restart when we return to Iowa qualifying earlier today Kyle Larson was the last car to go out in qualifying and he won the first Poll for the cup series at Iowa Speedway countdown to Green starts tomorrow at 6:30 and of course we’ll be talking about Martin shk junor and the story that happened this weekend he will retire at the end of 2024 of course the first Cup Series race at 7:00 on USA make sure to join us for that plenty of stories taking place and could tires be an issue on the cup side tomorrow definitely could be think those two will do a lot more fishing together I would say they’ll be doing quite a bit of fishing and uh all sorts of outdoor fun for Johnny Morris as well as martinrex Jr so the field has been on and off Pit Road as we get ready for the chws John Hunter neek and Creed Toyota’s up here one and two going to be interesting to see who goes to the bottom here because that hasn’t been a good place to restart the top two went to the top then we saw Sam Mayer take that bottom spot Austin Hill also decided to go to the bottom John Hunter neek Sheldon Creed and Cole kuster the top three on that outside line want to take a look at the Toyota driver update we mentioned the top two neim and Creed they’ll restart on the outside line Chandler Smith who’s already LED 131 laps currently six fastest in practice yesterday seventh and Iowa to Brett Moffett back in 26th could be a great move for Sam May right here I what it’s looked like it’s taking Nim’s car a little bit to come in doesn’t fire off quite as well but it doesn’t seem like Sam May is really good at firing off so he could jump to the lead here very important restart as there will be 40 laps to go in the race from Iowa sold out crowd coming to their feet for this [Applause] one a lot of pressure from Austin Hill on the bumper of the one of Mayor they’ll make a three wide for that third spot botom only way up the racetrack Parker cerman keeps it off the wall John Hunter neek trying to take the lead Sheldon Creed on the bottom of the racetrack kuster running that high line as well we saw Creed get sideways he’s going to lose not only the battle for the lead but maybe even second here look coming around in the third spot on the outside the 21 car remember back in stage one where they had got tires they had to fall back because he went all the way back I think to 21st because he had a tire issue made it through all of that he’s on 18 lap scuffs right now so we’ll see how those work out for Austin Hill again 38 laps to go in this race and 18 lap scuffs on the 21 of Hill looking strong early in this run as he goes to take second away now kuster runs him down the racetrack but Hill gets the position It’s Not Unusual on repaved racetracks for scuff tires to take off faster and that has been the case so far but remember it’s still 37 laps to go and this team the 21 and they’ve had trouble the entire day with tire wear so yeah it’s a great position here but can they go the rest of the way without a tire problem Marty what do you think about that 21 well pretty impressive what he’s been able to do Rick restarting fourth now up to Second for Austin Hill in those 18 lap older tires Jeff we saw this earlier with Ryan SE when he had those older tires on he was able to keep the lead but to your point there’s a limited shelf life of that 36 to go what do you think do you think the 21’s tires can last I’m suspect that they can last they’ve had so many issues today their teammate blew a right front earlier ended their day I I don’t I don’t know look we don’t know but I would be very concerned if I was Austin Hill so we mentioned earlier the 48 drifted way up the racetrack kept it Off the Wall here’s how it happened it almost look like they all got stacked up getting into three and Parker had trouble getting slowed down and yeah the back end definitely kicked free on Parker there’s Riley herbs to the inside now of Sammy Smith and into the wall Austin Hill they didn’t make it very many laps at all the left front is down yeah I’m good sorry guys I didn’t I didn’t catch it soon enough it literally happened just in one and two and then I went down to three and four it was weird and then oh we had such a good car I’m so sorry that just sucks didn’t catch it soon enough from Austin Hill as the AMR safety crew immediately to him well the last thing you’re thinking is you’re going to blow a tire that early after a run entering turn one and it was a left front yeah I mean it’s it’s just easy it’s easy to second guess these things but the truth is there’s no way you could expect that you’re going to that you’re going to have a problem that early I know we saw smoke off the left front I’m not so sure that’s not breaking smoke like he’s got the thing locked up and he’s trying to slow it down um you know it’s very possible it blew a right front but he’s got it locked up and then he you know flat spots the left front and then blows that blows that one we haven’t seen any left side failures today they’ve all been right sides again the possibility I mean these were 18 lap scuffs that they put back on yeah I mean he made a hard run up through the pack to try getting into the top 10 there at the end of stage two with that set of tires on but he just I mean this this to me has either what Jeff was just explaining that could have have happened uh or you know he ran over something still up yeah yeah so I think it’s more that there’s a good chance that he ran over something that tire was going down and then it just blew out and a little bit earlier before this incident Aly got into the wall and Dave’s with him yeah Justus algy walked out under his own power from the infield Care Center how would you describe the tight RPP you guys are trying to walk today yeah the the un fortunate part is we had freed our car up and gotten too free and we were just trying to even get back to where it was kind of manageable there and um I just hated for all the guys on the S7 team everybody Precision build BR fresh agriculture you know this is um very unique it’s definitely not the old Iowa you know there’s a lot of things that are different and and I hate it it’s um we thought we were doing the right things and unfortunately it just didn’t work out in our favor so we’re going to regroup we’ll look at look at all the notes obviously Sam Le a bunch there I didn’t feel like we were in too bad a shape uh but once once that happens you’re just kind of a passenger along for the ride and try to get uh try to save it all the way to the wall and and unfortunately it wasn’t happening so we’ll we’ll regroup and go on next week and hopefully have a little bit better race I saw Ashley and the girls on Pit Road with you you get to walk out of the Care Center you’re healthy you get to celebrate Father’s Day tomorrow with them yeah I mean I was hoping to celebrate with a with a win it was my mom and dad’s 55th winning anniversary last night we got to celebrate with them and you know there’s nothing uh there’s nothing better than having the family with you when you go to Victory Lane that’s obviously not the case this afternoon but um you know I hate it because these fans that are here I mean this this Iowa Speedway brings people out in droves and it it’s truly uh truly an incredible facility and and I hope we keep coming back here I just hope we can work on some things to maybe not have the the situation we’re having today former winner here Justin all he’s out guys but he’s okay well you mentioned the crowd coming out in droves and I’m sure they’re anticipating a great finish to this one under 29 laps to go and really anyone’s race John Hunter Nim’s up front we’ve seen Cole kuster Sheldon Creed could he break through get his first win after nine second place finishes and we’ve seen restarts how crazy they are and once again they’re going to restart on hot scuff tires with with buildup on them and that’s when we’ve seen actually the wildest restarts they’ve been all over the place so it’s no telling what’s going to happen here I I believe John Hunter will pick the outside what will Cole kuster do will he go to the bottom will go to the top and it it’s these are difficult decisions but you don’t what’s the other thing that’s difficult about this DJ is that on hot scuff tires your car can do one thing on restart and the next restart do something completely different you really don’t know what it’s going to do when you Pile in there and Marty what is Jonathan thinking for the restart here will he choose that outside line yeah let’s chat with Jonathan Tony about his driver Cole Custer so you guys have had some blistering on your tires today as well will this cycle Jonathan help that tire where I I would think so yeah I think anytime you into a heat sock on it’ll probably help that blistering I got to not have a long time to run here so I think we’ll be okay got our man in a position here so if we can bring this uh CNC for home Victor Lane I think at the beginning of the day everybody thought this was going to be a race to the bottom of the track here at Iowa has it moved to a race to the middle is the outside line the better choice here on this restart I would say so you know it looks like all day the middle has prevailed the bottom kind of a lot of trash down there and stuff so yeah I think the outside of the midal so far has been the way place to be there you go so he might make that move Rick which would be interesting to not go on the front row and take the middle behind John Hunter neek we’re going to see here at just under a half a lap which lines they choose we’re anticipating John Hunter neach the preferred line has been that outside line for the restart yeah Sheldon cre tried that that inside Lane a couple of different times it did not work out for him earlier maybe there’s something he’s figured out and he can make that work if that’s the opportunity he has top three went to the top yeah so that will allow the one of Sam mayor to move all the way up to the front row he was fourth he’ll restart in the front row let’s listen in to see Dam May’s radio communication we’re short track racing here on a on a big short track so you know he just drove through you we and the guy had he is run through you and the 20s run through you not an advocate for just driving through people but I’m also an advocate for standing your ground you know what I’m saying you have to stand your ground or they’ll do it every week so Marty Lenley telling his young driver stand your ground Kevin Hamlin the spotter that was the voice first voice you heard then the second one was Marty Lindley Marty Lindley been around racing his entire life good crew really good crew chief really good race car driver himself we’ll see how aggressive Sam Mayer is on the restart it’s going to be 26 laps remaining Sam May works all the way up right next to the 20 of John Hunter NE back into the gas they go mayor a little slide there we’ll see if he can hang on to third he does he slides up in front of look like Creed and now right on the back bumper of kuster he’s going to try to take second away I don’t think Cole kuster was too happy about the way that he got there either little swipe at him can he make this work he’ll slide in front of him good you’re good mayor up to second Cory Heim making that lowline work as well as he’s looking to get into sixth now Ry herps moved up to Fourth picked up three spots on that restart little bump there out of the 92 of Ross Chastain he moves himim out of the way Chandler Smith in the 81 trying to get back up to that familiar spot for him which is the lead after he won stage one and two little payback right here cor into the bumper of the 92 and he’s trying to stand his ground a slide there out of himim we’ll see how much momentum that takes away from him as we see Chandler Smith working inside of Ross Chastain that’s the problem when you go to make that move that Chandler Smith was trying to make there he didn’t have much room even if he could have tried a slide job at that point in time Cory H was there so there was nowhere to slide up in front of Ros chest and now he’s got a line of cars on the outside uh helping him to lose a couple of more spots Riley Herson at 98 he just got by Cole kuster rileigh is flying that’s the fourth position he’s picked up on this restart let’s see if he can run run the leader down Chandler Smith falling back Sammy Smith able to get by him here comes Parker cerman in the 48 caution out again out lot of smoke rolling out from behind the 44 of Brennan P oil pressure water pressure everything I don’t I guess it just got hurt when it eighth caution has come out today seven different drivers have been up front nine lead changes as we come to the final 20 laps and another restart about to happen just cross the start finish line and the smoke begins to billow out underneath that 44 fluid on the racetrack as well AMR safety Team Works up on the high side of the track right now to try to eliminate some of that fluid already a crazy race let’s look back at how it got started early on it was AJ alond Dinger who had a tire issue and into the wall he went Randon Jones has not been the year he was hoping for didn’t get better today an engine failure very early in the race Shane Van gisbergen trying to catch it coming off turn number two and that was a backup car he wrecks that one is out of the race Jesse love big impact a good race going Justin ay also feeling the pain of the wall and a tire going down just as he was getting back into the gas hard into the turn four wall Austin Hill fought troubles all day long finally got in position to have a chance to win the race left front went down his day is over and Austin climbed out of that car and he’s standing by with Dave yeah and Burton just said it you had a chance finally in position to win the race and then seemed like the 18 lap scuffs were going to be the way to go why didn’t that work out yeah I’m not really sure exactly what happened we were having some issues all day today with some uh blister on on our tires we had a lot of left side tire wear we thought we had it fixed um we came in the stop price uh that was my best run of the race I drove all the way up to sixth and I thought I had a car that was uh you know in contention to win I thought our Ben Chevrolet was as fast as expin the internet all of a sudden and before I’m like man if we can just get a top 15 and get out of here I’d be happy so uh we definitely turned around and then yeah I don’t you know I don’t know what really happened there other than we it looked like we lost the left front and a lot of people were losing right fronts today so uh it felt weird like half a lap before that and I came over the radi I’m like something doesn’t feel right and I lost lost a lot of ground on the 20 and um I didn’t even drive in fully into one it blew and then you know when it’s on the splitter you just can’t get it slowed down so unfortunate day for everybody at RCR ECR Bennett um thought we were going to have a really good shot at it today and it just didn’t work out so you’re really thinking it was kind of a separate issue from what everybody’s been battling all day maybe maybe not I’m I’m not sure I I know that I know that there’s something going on I don’t you know I don’t want to put blame on good year or anybody like that I I it could just be the teams just trying to be aggressive with air pressure I don’t really know um but there’s definitely something going on but not saying that ours is the same as theirs or not uh we could have just ran over something for all I know but uh definitely we had some type of issue that was similar to The Other Guys it just seemed like it was left front instead of the right front right glad you’re okay to say the least guys it’s been tricky tricky out there today yeah it’s been a difficult time for Austin Hill over the past two weeks this one he’s out of but he was raced pretty aggressively a week ago at Sonoma by Shane van gisbergen and ended up Fifth there at somoma when Shane won and so now coming here and not being able to get the finish that they were hoping to get let’s listen into Chandler Smith’s radio see how they’re doing thing sucks on the short run can’t do anything can’t be aggressive at all this thing got way more grip after I got 50 Laps on the damn tires than it does when I have stickers like that’s a problem yeah that’s what we see here as well I mean he if if if you put that car out front he would drive away from everybody but on restarts he just has no grip and loses loses spots on every restart Dave and Jeff it’s funny because that was after a big adjustment on the pit stop before he made those comments uh big chassis adjustment then he made a break bias adjustment in the car as well so fight a little bit and trying to find their way back to the front where they’ve been a lot today Marty Dave let’s see Davin reso and Riley Herpst have faced a couple blister tires you faced some damage on the nose and a almost wreck on Pit Road what haven’t you fought today Davin yeah we fought hard we have a really good uh muster energy Ford Mustang here today and Riley’s stayed in it it’s been the the battle is making sure we stay focused and keep hitting our marks all day long and just battle back from the from the uh from the rear I think he’s passed more cars here today so we’re going to see what we got here in the next next 15 laps and see if we can we can go get this trophy a lot of the conversation over the last three minutes has been about this choose and which way to go what did you tell your driver I said winners take the front row there you go he said I don’t care what you do in my opinion you start third or fourth back there or third actually on the outside line you’re not going to win the race winners take the front row DJ that’s what the crew chief told the driver we’ll let Dave go before you respond oh yeah DJ you hold that thought I’m going to as uh all of us dads are interested in celebrating Father’s Day tomorrow I wanted to share with the fans a good Father’s Day story there’s only one father son Crew Chief and Driver duo in the field today and it doesn’t happen very often if ever in NASCAR’s 3 national series Dawson cram is having a great day just one lap off the pace and his dad Kevin has a lot to do with that you know we do anything for our kids Kevin is realistic he knows he’d never be able to write that huge check to get his kid up front in a race car but the 22-year-old driver is doing a really good job today Kevin is working all year as his crew chief he was a cup series crew chief back before Dawson was born and so now he’s back this year making sure that he gets what he can for his driver young driver Dawson crra as he learns yeah Kevin has actually he’s worked on crws for Bill Elliott Dale ear hars Ron Hornet a Jr so been a part of quite a few teams as the choose takes place Riley herbs winner front row you want to respond to that DJ I guess he listened well or he just feels like that was the right advice to give I as I was looking down into turn one and seeing the Speedy Dy that was put down on the fluid that was put on the racetrack I was I thought we might get back to like 10th before anybody chose the inside because that’s already been slick and a difficult entry in turn one after these restarts this is going to be very interesting Jeff you’re still going to drive it in there as hard as you can aren’t you I don’t have a choice you know winners also don’t drive into one easy so you know it’s what you really what you have to do what you have to hope if you’re Riley herbs is that NE gets in the corner and his car doesn’t stick the way he needs to I mean cuz if they’re all things equal outside’s going to be the preferred Lane so putting yourself on the bottom really is you’ve got to execute you can’t control what the 20 does you got to execute and hope he doesn’t get through there well it’ll be 13 to go from Iowa NE and herps one and two into one does it stick hers is able to hold the bottom holds on to Second slides up behind John Hunter neek it’s good job by rally didn’t come out with the lead but he’s in position Here Comes Sheldon Creed as well in the 18 now 12 to go Riley hers trying to take the lead away he does from John Hunter NE do it quickly he’s tight on theer he got tight driving away by Creed up the racetrack John Hunter neek and Creed slide right up against the turn four wall a lot of smoke coming out from the left front of the 20 of John Hunter check now looks like a tire rub Ry herps is saying please don’t blow the left RT Tire on that 20 car he does not want a caution with 11 to go Riley herbs got his first career win a year ago in his hometown of Las Vegas mayor’s coming fast though May has a lot of speed on Corner entry look how he’s able to gain on the 98 he has tons of confidence on his car on Entry stage that higher line yeah the 98 on the bottom so where does Mayor go whenever he gets to uh the 98 car is he going to continue that is he going to go up and block like he did right here Riley herps Mir driving now as he saw the line that mayor was running he took that away from him I you can’t give him the top through three and four Mayer closing the Gap now Sam mayor’s never won on a short track look right behind them as they get to racing there’s Cory he that has found his way up to third May is definitely faster he’s got to take a shot right here cuz if not him’s going to be right there with him and he’s going to be limited in what he can do oh I’m slipped so that gives that gives mayor a little more freedom to try something here little bit of breathing room for Sam Mayer as he looks to the inside of that 98 really close to the bumper now taking the air off the spoiler of the 98 a drag race down the backstretch and will he slide up in front of him mayor takes the lead away and they’re coming up to six laps to go that marks you’re good by two that was just a perfect example of how to make the pass he got a great run through the middle of one and two was able to get beside him and then when you’re in that spot then you can drive the end of the corner a little harder and take that air away from uh the 98 just as he did right there that was a perfect pass Cory Heim find a little more grip as the 20 is into the wall John Hunter neek we had seen some smoke coming out of the left front it looks as though the right front is down as well and the caution comes out he was running 11 well Riley Herz went from not wanting to see this to happen to being glad it happened cuz now he’s got a shot a restart under five to go take a look what happened to John Hunter NE this is earlier see the 18 up the racetrack made contact with him two teammates going at it put the left front fender onto the left front tire we saw it smoking Tire gave out and into the wall for John Hunter neek both front tires down for the driver of the 20 we’ve seen some big hits today we really have once they get the track cleaned up it’s going to end up being overtime here in Iowa a few bonus laps so if you’re Ry herbs right right now you just got you just put yourself in position to win this race by picking the bottom so you got to do it again right you know mayor’s going to pick the top I’d be shocked if he does it so R’s got to go to the bottom and that gives Cory Heim an opportunity to take the outside right behind this thing all right Marty look let’s talk about these top two let’s talk about these top two Rick Uh Kevin Hamin the spotter for Sam May told him a moment ago you have not launch very well the last two restarts you did earlier in the race think about what you’ve done on the last two restarts figure out how you can make it better and remember back to earlier in the race both the 98 and the one had a couple of run-ins earlier in this race and uh they reminded Riley herps of that they said remember how he’s raced you today I wonder if that still applies DJ if the winners take the front row will Riley herps go to the bottom or will he run to the top here no I think he’s going to the bottom we saw him make that choice a minute ago I think he has that that’s his only choice here if he really is going to put a full effort into trying to to win this race and for Sam may now that he’s in position to lead here from from the restart I I think that you will see a better restart from him take row but Riley H is going to go to that front row and give it everything that he has they are convinced the winners take the front row told that yep you know the other thing is you have to look at their overall situation where they are in take the inside to a guy that’s already Tak you to the Moon once [Applause] today I just don’t know if I’d rather be on the inside of him or behind them because for my my thinking my move so so if you’re a mayor you know all these guys are here to win but there also is a big picture like trying to make sure you make the playoffs but both of them are in you know the one is won a race so he’s in great shape the 98 he’s pretty safe on on points as well so this is an opportunity to go get aggressive and try to make something happen and if it doesn’t work out it’s probably going to be okay and and that does factor in your decision about how aggressive you can be how about the Run by Cory Heim here’s a driver who this is just his seventh start in 2024 in the xinity series he runs fulltime in the truck series he’s already got four wins there very impressive running in the third spot right now and has a shot at getting up front winning this race and and you hear his name mentioned for potential cup opportunities next year it’s it’s you know he’s gained enough attention and he’s done well enough in the truck series where people are considering you know putting him in a cup car next year be interesting to see where he ends up very young race car driver but a lot of talent just 21 years old out of Marietta Georgia come up through the ranks as we see the wave taking place here in the grand stands he’s come up through the ranks as we’ve seen so many drivers do in the Georgia area Atlanta Georgia area the Young Lions division and so it’s Herpst on the inside Mayer on the outside Cory Heim has taken that outside line as well we see Sheldon Creed also now on the inside of row two all right so as we put ourselves into the heads of the drivers if you’re Riley herbs you have to look in the mirror and recognize you have Sheldon Creed behind you you cannot let Sheldon Creed get M forward momentum on you and put you three wide no matter what you cannot make that mistake Sheldon Creed is an aggressive driver and you have to recognize that if you get put three wide there is no way you’re going to win this race they’re not restarting this lap there was some debris in turn three so they’ll go another lap this is the seventh overtime of this season and if the trend stays true the leader at the scheduled distance has won only two of the prior six overtime races so you might not want to be the leader coming into I’m betting they didn’t tell Sam May that right well DJ you’ve been in this position more times than I have so what’s Sam May thinking what’s he got to make happen here I I think what you do what you have to do right here is just you have to be confident in what you’re going to do you have to have a plan as you approach the restart Zone and it it it needs to be something maybe that’s a little bit different and you have to feel a little bit of what that driver that anticipation of what he wants you to do and not do that exact thing we talked about Cory Heim what Riley hers needs to do to defend that that’s his opportunity to win this race is Mak it three wide getting into the corner and then you got the 26 you know of Cory Heim what’s he going to do what’s Creed on the bottom going to try to make it three wide what does himim do I don’t think you can make it three wide on the top on this race track I don’t think the track’s wide enough so what what is his goal his goal is to in my opinion to leave turn two with second place try to get we get a good launch we’re gone we don’t overdrive corners final words of wisdom coming to the driver here as the pace car will pull off it’s overtime presented by Credit One Bank Sam Mayer on the outside Riley herst on the inside sliding up the racetrack is Creed mayor is going to clear Herpst as come out of two does Heim have enough time coming to the White Flag one more time around Sam Mayer in the middle of the track Riley hers one final try as they come through three and four out of four Sam May is going to win in Iowa nice work nice job fell we won baby wow thank you guys so much unbelievable thank you guys you guys and a little bump there and the left rear is now flat the that came from Riley herst the 9 just got my left rear first short track win for Sam Mayer what were we seeing there did he not feel like he was RAC Fair well we talked about some issues earlier in the race I think it might go back to that uh because you know when he made the pass early there was nothing to that I saw uh that he could be upset about but you know drivers see things differently when you’re inside the yeah six career wins now for Sam Mayer and they’ve all come in the last 29 races think about that he just made it a match and set on the rear buddy proud of you that’s as far as that one’s going to go Ty carcasses no longer on the rear wheels for Sam Mayer as he gets out to celebrate in front of this soldout crowd in [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Iowa Super Sam so showing the shield on the chest there and you see Riley Herpst out of the 98 now Herpst second Cory Heim third Sammy Smith was fourth Sheldon Creed fifth in this one Kim and I think that’s the most excited we’ve ever seen Sam mayor man you survived an overtime restart and you did it in the lead before that though you were able to overtake Riley hers walk me through the move you made on him yeah you know like we uh we struggled yesterday and this rot team went to work and uh obviously we did pretty good overnight making good decisions on this race car and uh huge thanks to everyone at the HMS engine shop JRM rigid roor rter everyone on board this car this weekend man I’m I’m out of breath cuz I was just huffing in a bunch of smoke but I feel really good I I could do another 100 laps for sure and with a race car like this it’d be a lot of fun with so many Tire failures today including your teammate just Al was there any concern throughout the race that maybe you wouldn’t make it to the end yeah we definitely got a little bit tight there at the end of the second stage so I was a little concerned there but Marty said the tires look all good so we took care of it and we did our job and now we get to celebrate congratulations thank you thank you that is Sam Mayer with his second win on the 2024 season [Applause] lot of energy there to grab that checkered flag from Iowa Speedway Sam Mayer his first short track win and it comes in the middle of the corn fields here in Iowa had a little help with the left rear coming off Riley hers got into that one but burned off the right on the other side we’ll have more post race with Marty coming up next on USA US Olympic team trial swimming from Indianapolis part of making Team USA presented by exfinity had a little controversy after the race Sam May the winner but Riley herbs finished second and seemed pretty upset about that day Burns I’ll check in with Riley on that it was as Rough and Tumble of races fans would like to see even before the last lap but you seem kind of upset getting out you uh think that was not a fair race or was that fair game no it was just frustrating but um it was an up and down day for sure I felt like we were okay yesterday um and we got it better we worked all night they did a really good job and we worked our way back up through the field got some track position and then the guy who won I mean just absolutely brooms us in one and two so that was frustrating and then for him to dor me down the straightway before the green white Checker um I I don’t know that was a bit frustrating but all in all it was fun to race with them on the green white record I I wish I I could have wrapped the bottom if they wanted a little bit better on that last run but I’m just most proud of that the speeds back in the 98 car um The Monster Energy car was really fast today so I appreciate everybody at Stuart hos Racing for for sticking together it’s it’s been a last hard last couple months and it’s going to be a hard couple months going forward as well just with everything going on so um Everybody staying together is awesome and uh hopefully we can continue to bring this speed to New Hampshire next week so have fun and half I kind of owe Sam one I I wouldn’t know if I owe him one he’s going to call me this week and apologize and then show me his Superman photo or whatever the hell he does on top of his car all right Kim well Dave Cory Heim matches Sam Hunt Racing’s best team finish of third here today that last overtime restart could you have done anything more yeah I think in hindsight I could have been a little bit more aggressive maybe I really thought the 98 and the one were going to get into it there being on the front row I was I was really hoping they were going to give me the bottom there and I was going to be able to kind of be aggressive myself and try to win the race but uh being on the second row here there’s really only two lanes so there’s only so much you can do but uh just so proud of the effort from Sam Hunt racing our our Yahoo gr super was great today as fast as expin the internet and uh certainly a great day for the small organization another great race for them and me next week at Lowden so looking forward to learning some more and building on it you told me this was just such a long race we had the tire issues it was very fast out there how did you keep your head in the game it was tough I mean that first run I thought we we shot out of a rocket there I think we gained like 12 or 13 spots and all of a sudden we stalled out and lo and behold the the right front was going down in the whole process so uh something new to me I’m not used to having that issue but uh it’s all learning experience for me this is only like my 10th race ever so just trying to build and and get ready for for low and a good RAC trck for Sam hun racing next week and that’s Cory Heim in the third position Marty yeah thanks Kim and by the way uh Cory Heim will be in the car next week at New Hampshire as well Brad something to look forward to here’s how the playoff standings shape up Mr Dy yeah you know I’m still watching those guys below the 12th and Brandon Jones again as we talked about earlier takes another hit in the points goes further away Anthony Alfredo Ryan SE man had a great run going there about 3/4s of the way through hoping he could hold on they’re right there on the cusp of Sammy Smith though we continue our post race coverage here on USA Marty Snider Brad Dy joining you here well well well let me write down another controversy 981 add that to the list uh how about that Brad I mean I’m surprised Sam I didn’t know that uh that Sam May took a shot at at Riley herbs coming to the coming to the green flag I saw that I just think that Sam’s aggressive I just think that’s part of it you got to go do what you’ve got to do I think that’s what Riley was trying to say I wish I could have been a little bit more aggressive during that time Sam H Sam went I mean Sam went won this race on his own you got to do that you got to take it this was stage one Kevin Hamlin the spotter said that was may be my fault I told him he could go up there but then Sam said I don’t care he did that to me earlier in the race Sam mayor was hyper aggressive he stands at Victory Lane we see it every week you have to go win these races I want to give some credit to to Marty Lindley for this win I mean absolutely I mean Sam mayor was 28 in practice yesterday and I asked Marty I said what all did you guys change overnight he said well pretty much everything and his quote was we’re starting from quote scratches today for starting from scratches as he called it to come to win I don’t think they ever imagined this could happen no not at all but Marty Lindley like you talk about he’s one of the Legends in this sport he’s a smart guy and he went back and they just went to some old school knowledge and they made this race car every one of these guys who finished up front it was tire pressure adjustments I’m telling you they they got to where they were putting air in the tires keeping them aired up as opposed to keeping it low where these guys were blowing those tires I know that’s where the speed’s at but if you’re smart it’s for the long run it’s air pressure we have talked about the maturation of Sam May throughout the years Brad but to have a weekend like this where they’re nowhere in the game yeah during practice during a 50-minute practice on Friday and to come and win what does it say about that young driver it it says he’s very very talented and you can tell and hear from the enthusiasm during his interview I mean he sprinted down the track to get the flag he’s so excited this makes this young man very dangerous cuz we know he’s got a lot of confidence he’s got a lot of talent if he continues with this attitude who knows what could happen for Sam May many more wins by the way for exfinity a uh another short track next week at New Hampshire yes sir so you know there might be more of this coming up but by the way Cup Series race tomorrow Brad Kyle Larson on the poll and by the way top of the playoff standings as well it’s going to be fun to watch these guys are going to have to get after it we we learned a little bit today watching this xinity race going to have to drive really hard be smart manage those tires even more with a more difficult car to drive yeah Mr Cup Series team are you worried about that tire where potential issues tomorrow I am very worried Marty I think you know we always push it every one of us and I think it’s going to get some of us in trouble tomorrow the most anyone was able to do in practice yesterday for the cup series about 20 laps that’s going to be very interesting to watch tomorrow and by the way going to be very warm during the day but a night race tomorrow night here in Iowa yeah you want to make sure you check it out here on USA it was a fun Infinity Series race today Brad wasn’t it a outstanding race yeah a lot of fun here Sam May getting to Victory Lane after starting a little bit back in the field but was able to recover and get his car much better today Brandon Jones a tough day for that race team boy looked like Chandler Smith was going to be the guy today and then he got back in the pack Chandler Smith Z was out he was dominant for a long period of time a lot of these guys I’m Where's the cup race
In my country the cup race was on my tv guide as pre race as well as a coworker who has a different satellite provider. Because of this both of our DVRs did not record the race. Wondering if the same happened to our man. Either way doing a great job and very appreciative of this channel!!
