[Music] I’ve been Asian Sports Talk on a Monday it is July my first Vince D Dario he’s Vince I’m shown styes by the way formalities out of the way feels like it’s uh like May 1 out there today the weather is just gorgeous like yesterday and today are my idea of perfect weather you know what I mean it’s actually got a little chilly it did towards towards the evening yesterday and that’s what I’m talking about like it was like blue skies a little bit of a breeze right around 70° if not 6968 it’s perfect weather man perfect I could go a little warmer than that actually but today’s today I think would be closer to perfection we’re about 75 right now 75ish beautiful sunshine outside it’s nice it is nice my kids spent most of the day outside which was good yeah for sure especially yeah I mean July 1 but it is here it is Canada Day happy Canada Day for all who celebrate Father David Father David happy Canada Day I don’t know if he’s our only Canadian listener SLV viwer he’s at least one of our most most loyal Canadian I I haven’t seen him in the chat yet but uh if I do I will rewi him a happy Canada Day yeah when he comes in maybe he’s out partying I mean I don’t know what they do for Canada day I know I don’t know what they I don’t know what they do either I saw that I was watching the Blue Jays and the Astros ago look at you par an afternoon game yeah yeah what do they celebrate what what is the celebrate I don’t I’m going to plead my Canadian ignorance here I don’t know I don’t know if it’s like Canadian independence like the invention of Canadian Mist like I don’t I’m not molson’s I don’t know Formerly Known dominion day it celebrates the anniversary of Canadian Confederation which took place on July 1st 1867 I don’t know what that means though so oh so there was three separate colonies the United Canadas Nova Scotia and New Brunswick were all united into a single Dominion within the British Empire okay so there you go little history lesson so it’s not their independence they didn’t gain their independence they actually that’s true came together under the British Empire so it’s not really yeah it’s different yeah for sure but you do have you know like English influence in one part of the country you have French influence in another part of the country so I just never I’ve never been up on my Canadian history so I don’t know anything I will look I will be honest I don’t know anything about Canadian history I just know that they’ve been involved in some of our domestic struggles you know the French and Indian war war of 1812 like they were involved in some ways because of the connection with the British yeah but uh yeah other than that well you know I got nothing last week I I did a lot of Tesla talk after my trip to Niagara Falls and all that kind of stuff and had someone on the boards giving me the you know the the very specific history of electricity in the United States and which is great but like I you know I hadn’t heard about most of it like for example did you know that Wabash Indiana was apparently one of the first cities in the United States to you know be have electricity I guess really did not know that but you know the my point about the whole Tech you know one this is what they are teaching in Niagara they they obviously take electricity much more seriously like the invention of electricity you know with the alternating current the direct current and the whole thing like in the United States at least my experience going through public schools in the United States you went to a private school in the United States but the the one the focus on the invention of electricity is very brief and two it is focused on Edison above all else from what I remember 100% first time look the first time I’ve ever heard of Tesla or anything about Tesla is when the cars started to come out so first time I heard about Tesla was when uh one of my roommates in the Army uh had a Tesla album there is a rock band by oh gosh of Tesla and they yeah they’re they’re big into Nicola Tesla like they’re it’s kind of like their guy so the more you know Father David just jumped in he says does he have to give a Canadian history lesson we may have to have that actually I know and then and then salty says Father David they were celebrating you as a loyal listener ironically you were not here that’s actually really good it’s very good actually pretty that’s pretty solid happy Canada Day Father David that’s yes our most loyal Canadian listener not here as we we’re talking about him Father David in as short of a response as you can make it what is your relationship with England like the British Empire Canada’s relationship with England like currently because I don’t know what I don’t know what it is I don’t know are they in charge of Canada is it just a mutual friendship at this point like what is the relationship that’s that’s what I need to know because isn’t like the whole you know the king is still our King okay he says okay so they are part of they’re part of the Empire yeah so so there there is no Independence they still part of the Empire okay I didn’t know that remember of the Commonwealth he says I I did not know that that is actually very interesting to me I knew there was some Rel they do still you know like God saved the queen right or is it God saved the king God saved the king now yeah yep we are a constitutional monarchy says father okay okay all right e just like England is a constitutional monarchy okay all right good to know good to know interesting here’s something else I know what do you got Notre Dame football training camp starts 30 days from today what do you think about that is it that fast is it coming up that quickly like we’ve got all these countdowns over the weekend it’s like I keep seeing you know Notre Dame foot 60 days to Notre Dame football 61 training camp that’s the start of Notre Dame football right there because you know where you’ll be able to come each and every day once training camp starts and get training camp nuggets useful information that’s right IB Irish breakdown bre bab podcast Irish breakdown. hit that like button while I’m thinking about it so it’s coming baby July is finally here Joe says the longest 30 days of the year I think we just went through the longest 30 days of the year [Laughter] personally it it will be it is interesting because like this is the only month of the year for me where I don’t have any school like there’s no school in July which means we’ve now hit July which means it feels like I’ve hit the the peak of Summer and it’s starting to go this way which it’s not the case we’re not even halfway through summer yet but that’s what it feels like like it feels like we’ve hit it and now I’m on the backside and I don’t I don’t like that feeling I don’t like it at all yep I gotta yeah I got you but we got a lot of Summer left and uh you know it’s it’s it’s going to be great I’m looking forward I got a vacation ahead of me yet at some point still got some stuff going on so I’m excited and in the way the calendar Falls with everything Sean we’re going back to school like a week later than we normally do really yeah so you excited about that or does that just mean you go a week longer next year I mean means it means we go we got out earlier this year we got out before Memorial Day and then or the week of Memorial Day and then next year we go into June so it’s like yeah yeah yeah I mean you’re can it’s 180 days no matter how you slice it you know I mean it just is what it is very fortunate because I remember only going into June maybe a couple times when I was in school because of a couple R you know like snow days stuff like that if we had too many you know those kind of things right very fortunate we didn’t go like around here it seems like man they go into June all over the place pretty much normally Parts yeah I mean and there it’s because there’s so many stinking breaks throughout the school year which when I’m in the middle of it I enjoy those breaks OB like we didn’t have any fall break and dingo yes Thanksgiving vacation or you know whatever it was basically Day short we get off now I don’t think we got that off it’s more of a safety issue because you got strangers coming in the building yeah you just you never know but stranger danger that’s right stranger danger baby so yeah there there’s a lot more breaks intermittent throughout you know but you know I guess it is what it is very true very true well as it turned out wasn’t expecting this kind of a big weekend for Riley Leonard huh I know down in Louisiana I had no idea and we’re GNA get into this but I had no idea that they had competition for basically the counselors of the Manning camp like that like the college guys are they go and I was under the impression that they were just like it was the place to be if you’re a college starter you know and you help out these high school kids you know that like a counselor you’re a camp counselor yeah I had no idea they had competitions no idea I didn’t either and maybe it’s because no Notre Dame quarterback had won this thing before well that’s for sure they participated but they have never I’ve never seen them come home with any kind of Accolade yeah for sure so Riley Leonard comes out of the uh Manning Passing Academy as the winner of the air it out challenge now it is it is interesting 45 there were 45 college quarterbacks it took a lot to sort of find out what exactly he did to win this okay I’m interested to find out actually so they warmed up with what they call the Deep ball challenge and I don’t know the specifics of what exactly the Deep ball challenge are but the main event they made three throws ranging different yardage that required each of them to try to hit three moving golf carts okay and then that they would make a 40 yard 40 plus yard throw into a kaboom net whatever a kaboom net okay I mean it’s one of those deals with like the little just the thing with like the okay you know I mean square the square with the you like throw it into the slots that’s a kaboom net okay that’s my guess I mean I’m I’m kind of guessing I suppose I could Google it okay Leonard was also reportedly one of three quarterbacks to hit well not also one of one of three quarterbacks to hit all three of the moving targets so like he hit he hit all the golf carts basically and then they’re in a sudden death throw off I’ll bring this up right here that was Dylan Gabriel former Oklahoma now Oregon quarterback there’s Riley Leonard boom nailing it here’s Conor wigman Texas A&M the wi brutal brutal Conor wigman uh that’s an interception in my book what I just saw there I mean it might be incomplete because there might not be anybody anywhere near where that ball fell down Xavier watts is taking that back to the house now if that was the the throw off or whatever the sudden death then that means he had to have done something good I guess to get to that point but I don’t know feels like he cracked under the pressure to me I’m just gonna say it thought so as well so apparently it came down to those three okay so I mean already I mean we didn’t even get to start talking about this and Andre just came in I’m glad he had a win but we know that aame fans want a championship it’s not good enough that he goes and he beats out nearly 50 starting quarterbacks from around the country in this thing it’s I don’t even care I just want a championship don’t even don’t even waste your time apparently take what you can get right now Andre take what you can get they’re not out national championships in June all right they’re just not no no then Andre says Nope so so H how big a deal is this do you think Vince it’s a deal I don’t know if I would say big deal it’s a deal big deal little deal no deal yeah yeah right it’s a deal look I’d rather have him win it than not win it right now does this mean that Notre D’s gonna win all their games and he’s going to win the Heisman Trophy of course not but the fact that he was down to the finals with the guy he’s going to face off against in the first game of the season I do think is a little appropo I I I did kind of like that you know the symmetry of that or or the the foreshadowing potentially of that and and I like the fact that Riley Leonard came out on top and it wasn’t close so I mean that was great but uh you know it it’s it’s good to see that he’s he’s doing these things all of these great things that no Notre Dame quarterback has done in the off season before and so it it it it gives us hope hopefully it’s not false hope but it gives us hope yeah and I mean you know look all the things you hear about Riley Leonard is he’s a guy who’s competitive he gets the competitive juices flowing and all that kind of stuff and you know like Joe is asking how how serious was the competition well I mean I don’t know I mean that was the competition and like it was I like the fact that it was pretty smooth and effortless for you know he just kind stood there it’s not like he you know he’s like you know like sweating that that moving you know mechanical dummy out there he just kind of looked and he fired and he and he popped it again he had to hit some moving targets and stuff like that you know look to me you know like how serious was the competition well to me it’s more about you know and again this doesn’t all of a sudden now Riley Leonard is a Heisman trophy finalist or whatever because he won this thing but Conor wigman was there Dante Moore and Dylan Gabriel were both there Carson Beck was there Jackson names Jackson Dart Quinn yers Graham Merz Jaylen milroe Garrett nesm the LSU quarterback Kate kumnick jup Pine was there so it’s like these are these are all very significant quarterbacks from around the country and you it was it looked like from everything that we’ve seen a fairly black setting and stuff like that but it’s a nice little notch in your belt if you’re Riley Leonard to go down there and say you won this thing right look if you’re going to compete in something why not go win it all right I mean yeah I I want a competitor in that position for my team and you know it’s like Michael Jordan was one of the most competitive people that you’ve ever met right he wanted to win at poker he wanted to win at whatever he was doing wanted to win throwing that quarter up against the wall like right ex seriously so you know whether it was a relaxed atmosphere or whether it was a a dieh hard competition I don’t care he wanted to win he did win I’ll take it I’ll take the competitor right all day and here is someone from on three was down there and here’s part of the write up that they had on what they saw from Riley Leonard they said Leonard flashed a big arm on Friday night he won the event after forcing a three-man overtime that resulted in only Leonard hitting the downfield moving Target that’s the video that we just showed there with former LSU offensive coordinator Mike Den Brock now at Notre Dame Leonard has a chance to be one of the country’s most talked about quarterbacks this fall that could be good or bad but yes I agree that he could be the most talked about absolutely and this doesn’t hurt the press for Riley Leonard going into the season this little because this is probably the last time that you’re going to really see him do anything until training camp opens in a month in 30 days right and so he’s got all this positive MO going into that that’s fantastic I like it well it he was there last year as well and here’s a write up from last year after they had you know just some some like quick little write-ups when it came to his showing at the Manning Camp Leonard made a number of big-time throws Caleb Williams and Drake May are talked up as the top draft eligible quarterbacks but Leonard could sneak up on the board in a hurry this fall again that was from last year’s Manny camp that just go that just that that just backs up my point that I made before I don’t remember what show when it was or whatever but my point that going into the 23 season Riley Leonard was talked about as a potential first round draft pick yes and you know and with only three years of college right because he’s the same age as as Caleb Williams and so that was the talk swirling around Riley Leonard until he got hurt and then he obviously fell off off of everybody’s draft boards so I’m just saying I think people have a convenient memory when it comes to who Riley Leonard is and all they can remember is the fact that he got hurt by Notre Dame yes and the issue and and look that those are all important pieces to the story don’t get me wrong but from a talent standpoint and from what he did in 22 there was a lot of Buzz about Riley Leonard going into the 23 season and after that Clemson game last year that you know when when Duke knocked off Clemson that that exploded oh yeah Riley Leonard like all people were talking about is first round draft first round draft pick you know type type of talk and and this this is a guy who was pretty highly thought of kind of off the radar because he was at Duke but highly thought of yeah going into the season if he doesn’t get injured you know if he doesn’t get injured he’s not here oh 100% he’s not he’s at an N he’s getting ready for NFL training correct absolutely if he doesn’t get injured if he doesn’t get injured with the way he was playing you know going into the Notre Dame game and how he played at the beginning of the Notre Dame game yeah he’s definitely getting drafted I don’t know if it would be first round or whatever but there’s a lot of guys with in my opinion a lot less Talent than him that got drafted in the first round resident scorekeeper DK uh reminding you when it was May 15th 6:18 p.m. it was definitely possible could you see DK like in his den he’s like track and everything he’s got his scotchy Scotch I mean it was a Wednesday I was on the show that day so it’s definitely F I mean could have could have been possible so perfect segue though what kept Riley Leonard in college what you know what has him at Notre Dame it’s the fact that he was injured last year and they did a little press conference we’re going to play some some cuts of Riley Leonard from his press conference on some different topics including this one right here where he was asked about his health and how healthy he is right now healthy I I can’t stress that enough like I’m very healthy um don’t if you were if you were walking around in my body you wouldn’t even know you you had any injuries in the first place so um feeling good uh there’s no limitations to anything in workout wise that I’m doing so feel good he said some form of that in uh I guess it was April but a week or two before the spring game when we got to talk to Riley Leonard some some version of if you were walking around in my body you wouldn’t feel any pain that was after he had the plate in his foot and all that kind of stuff so this is what like three months later at this point I guess right like roughly three months later two and a half months later yeah so does it how much does that ease your you know whatever concern you have about Riley Leonard’s Health when you he ins say I mean realistically I didn’t have a whole lot of concern to be perfectly honest with you I think that if it was the regular season I think he plays in the blue gold game to be perfect perfectly honest with you now I don’t know that he would have been 100% you know that kind of he wouldn’t have been as dynamic as you know he would be if he was 100% healthy but I don’t think it would have kept him out of the game uh so three months removed from that I feel really I I would have without him even saying that I would have felt really good about where he’s at you know they definitely wouldn’t have trotted him out at the Manning camp and had him running around and doing stuff if they thought that he wasn’t really ready to roll you know what I me let him go down there you don’t feel good about where his health is because at the end of the day the man in Camp means nothing correct you know what I mean like it means absolutely nothing just like the blue gold game ultimately means nothing exactly and so I mean it’s great to hear him say that which is which is awesome but the fact that he was down there he was competing he looked great I I I really have no worries whatsoever now there’s always going to be I think in the back of everybody’s mind if some defensive lineman or something goes low on him or but you would have that for any quarterback exactly exactly that’s why they have all the rules in the NFL about hitting below the waist or below the knee but look I think he un unfairly got labeled a quarterback with a history of injuries ba basically based on one thing that happened to him last year he tried to come back and play kind of had problems with the toe and obviously you know there were there were lingering things with the foot because he never had surgery when he was at Duke and so you know like injury history became his label but really it’s it’s an is you know something isolated that happened last year because unfortunately Howard cross came down on that ankle and it kind of set off you know a little bit of a chain reaction I think the biggest thing when you hear one he’s already had the type rope surgery but then in the middle of spring after he gets to Notre Dame and it’s like okay he had a plate in the foot but now we’re taking the plate out and we’re putting a new plate in that to me is what sets off the alarm belt sure but the fact that he’s he’s standing here again almost three months late really more than three months since that surgery and he’s saying he feels good and Notre Dame feels good enough to let him run around out there and you know go to the The Passing Academy and he’s obviously working out with guys you know took guys down to Alabama and doing all these that’s true different things I I think you have to feel really good about it just well and he was was running yeah he was running around at the Irish Invasion too yeah right I mean and wasn’t he like outplaying defense at one point and you know whatever like especially on campus at Notre Dame they’re not gonna let him do that if they have any worries about that ankle and so look if Notre Dame doesn’t have any issues with the way he’s running around and doing stuff then who am I to have issues with him running around and doing stuff I guess that’s the way I look at it because I I do trust the he you know the strength staff and the the and the uh Sports Medicine staff and you know all the people that are involved with all the injuries and things they seem to feel very comfortable with Riley Leonard and so if they feel comfortable with him then so do I but you know again there’s always going to be that nagging thing in the back of your head you know if he gets knocked to the ground or somebody goes low you know you’re gonna be worried no I me you are gonna win it’s like especially the first time you see somebody come down on hard on on his legs you know but you can’t feel that you can’t act that way when you’re calling plays and you can’t act that way if you’re Rony Leonard either you’re 100% healthy and you go out there and you play 100% and Mike Den brck calls plays knowing he’s got 100% Riley Leonard or you don’t play him because a non 100% Riley Leonard you know there there’s a certain percentage and I don’t know what that percentage is until you start evening up with your backups you know what I mean and again a 90% R lonard is probably still better than everybody else at this point yeah you know what I mean this percent like you’re better off just going with the backup that correct but like you can’t there’s a chance somebody gets hurt on every play you can’t call plays that way right you know what I mean you can’t you can’t yeah exactly and that’s when people start getting hurt when you start acting that way so everybody seems to be real comfortable man so I’m excited to see what he can do I mean like look at Tom Brady he had that knee injury however many years ago that was you know the the shot that he took to the knee with you know and they ultimately changed the rules on okay no more hits below the knee that kind of thing but he never had another one of those injuries again in the rest of his career you know it worked out pretty well so you just just GNA kind of have to play through it and we’ll get to kind of more of that here in in a minute he’s gonna have some comments on being in Mike Den Brock’s offense we’ll get into salty though wants a Freaky Friday type situation where he gets to walk around in somebody else’s body and and feel what that feels like depends on whose body it is yes just leave it at that it’s very true okay so here’s what he said Riley Leonard that he wanted to get out of being at the Manning Academy um I think I think you know the biggest thing is just like friends that are last a lifetime I think you know there’s nobody in the world that can relate to me probably more than like this guy right here like any of these transfer quarterbacks who like we’re living the same life just at different schools um so I you know we we we you know we’re all like really good buddies now even after you know a day I met him yesterday but um I think you know yeah these friendships will last for a long time he sounds like a kid who just got home from summer camp I know that’s it’s it’s the friends we met along the way V it’s like I’m gonna be friends with these people forever it is so great I love these people so much oh my god it feels like we’ve known each other forever I wish I could have seen who he was pointing to like who exactly that was you know it’s like was it drew Pine you know was Drew over there I mean that is hilarious to me that you know you’re can make friends for a lifetime even though they just met yesterday right that is now part of it is true you know exactly part of it is true like the only people in the world that know what he’s going through our other people that are transferring like I get that part of it and so it’s nice to have those conversations but uh the whole lifelong friend thing is hilarious yeah I thought that was pretty funny as well great that’s great don’t have anything to add but it’s yeah we’re going to be friends for life now he just sounds like a middle school girl who just went on like a 24hour retreat or something you know what I mean and they they just they hug they were hugging my best friend ever yeah it’s hilarious all right so here’s what Leonard said about the difference between playing at Duke and playing for Notre Dame uh you know obviously there’s a lot of social media attention that comes with it I don’t really go on social media so I’m not sure on that scale but I will say walking around South Bend you know you drive 15 20 30 minutes off campus you’re still going to get like some DieHard um Irish fans which is really cool and I embrace um I think I think just like the community as a whole is probably a little bit more into the football side of things for sure draw 30 minutes of uh well you’re not gonna find yeah right yeah you got Chapel Hill down the road you got NC State Wake Forest so I mean you know you get to Northern uh Indiana it’s gonna be no Dame even in Chicago so you think he’s driving over to middleberry you know like getting some Amish donuts and the only all the die hards out there the only place he’s driving is to the Southbend Airport to uh go other places like that’s the only it’s the only travel that when I heard him when I first heard that I I I started thinking about the 15 to 30 minute radius yeah around it there’s no way Riley Leonard has driven 15 minutes away from campus like said unless it’s to the airport unless it’s to Chicago whoever it happens to be I just I don’t see it I’m sorry now his point that he’s making is a good one in that where he was before he was surrounded by other universities and he’s going to run into the fans of those other schools right okay got it that’s a good point around here now you don’t just have Notre Dame fans but the majority of the People Are Notre Dame fans then and I mean you go 15 miles north you’re in Michigan you’re G to get some Michigan Michigan State fans he didn’t go north there’s no way he went North but uh I agree but no he he he makes a good point that Notre Dame fans are everywhere like that’s the point he was trying to make I don’t know that he made it very succinctly or or you know together in words like in comparison to where he was where you got Chapel Hill proboy Durham and I mean how many Duke fan Duke football fans like specifically Duke football fans are there and that’s got to be the biggest thing to me because basketball is the biggest sport there compared to here where obviously football is King so yes yeah 100% basketball will always come first down there always there’s a reason Mike Alco left there you go I mean he had a great thing going down there a great thing going down there but money talks and so does the SEC and so does the you know massiveness of who Texas A&M thinks they are and wants to be I mean they’re a football school first yeah Duke will never be a football school ever is Texas A&M a football school are we comfortable in saying that well I mean they’re are they a baseball school like what are they I think they’re a football school because they’re in the SEC and they’re in Texas and so I think almost by default I would say they’re a football I would say every school in Texas is a football school so right yeah see what happens if Sark leaves in a few years if if Den or felco does what the baseball coach did and and jump ship and that’s a whole other story that is a whole other story uh caveman NC so is this somebody who went to Mishawaka high school that lives in North Carolina cavan living in Carolina yeah that’s my question but he says they give Duke tickets away I live five minutes from the stadium well you can go see some good football for free apparently so that’s awesome yeah but I’m curious if he’s a caveman our caveman Roots man they they run a little deep for you and me I witnessed shyville when I was out there with women’s basketball this past season walking around they were camping out like like a full week before whatever the next home game was I think like they’ve got the tent set up yeah the whole thing out there they’ve even they bring out they’ve got Porton set up for them out there it’s a very elaborate production wow I I would doubt that they’re camping out like that for Duke football games uh I would be surprised he said born and raised in North Carolina he’s Carolina caveman is what he is okay all right good deal good deal I can’t imagine I can’t imagine they have a hard time or I can’t imagine they have a hard time filling the student section in basketball but I would imagine at times they have a hard time filling the student section for football games right don’t really have to camp out for those especially now you you lose head coach who had kind of brought you back a little bit you lose a guy like Riley Leonard I would imagine interest is going to WAN a little bit this year yeah and I’m not a huge fan of their head coach the new one so I guess we’ll see what happens down there but yeah he was given a raw deal though his last gig yeah so Leonard was asked about playing in Mike Den Brock’s offense here’s the response to that the pro the point with Jane Daniels obviously you know he’s probably a little bit faster than me but probably a lot of bit faster than me but like I can still you know make those reads make those thrs that he was making the checks as well so I think you know for for Den Brock I just want I I’m just watching Jaden Daniel’s film all day is what I do so just being able to replicate him I think I can do and obviously had a good year so that’s cover just slide and you’ll be good yeah yeah right so I got to work on that too um but yeah slide and I’ll be good I agree with that uh yeah let’s start at the end there Vince uh sliding work on the SL like learn the slides he needs to be out there figuring that out for sure when to get down the sideline is your friend sticking your nose in there for the extra yards yeah I mean if it’s the differ if it’s third down you need to get that first down lower that shoulder and get it big boy but if it’s not then no like get down sideline get out of bounds you know whatever the case may be you’re better off living to see another play than you are getting that extra yard when it doesn’t matter I do think he’s a little little thicker than than Jaden Daniels I’d have to look at the official roster size but Jaden Daniels I was struck like during the draft and things like how Slender Jaden Daniels is especially if you compare him to a guy like Riley Leonard that’s true I you know you know and I would he said he’s a lot bit faster than Riley I wouldn’t mind seeing them run like what of their 40 times you know what I mean like that type of deal uh I because Ry Leonard’s a good runner now maybe it’s more like he’s he’s better East and West than he is north and south maybe that’s kind of a thing but I I would be very interested to see what what that looks like according to official weights Riley Leonard is 25 to 30 pounds bigger than J Daniels so interesting but yeah like I think that that is when you look at that’s the obvious thing to look at Mike Den Brock coming from LSU he just had Jaden Daniels and now you’ve got Riley Leonard another mobile quarterback might not be a carbon copy of Jaden Daniels but that’s like I I mean it makes perfect sense that Riley Leonard is just sitting there watching everything that that Daniels did last season with the kind of season he had I mean he won he won the Heisman right I think there’s a lot people to emulate and since it was your offensive coordinator’s offense I do believe that Riley Leonard can make the checks and make the make every throw that Jaden Daniels made I I do believe that right and so look their games are fairly similar really in what they’re able to do from a physical standpoint and so hey man keep studying keep studying and I’m okay with that that that if you can replicate that or even come close great well and Leonard said this spring that the offense that he played in at Duke the last couple of years is really not that different from the one that he’s going to be playing in under Mike Den brck so that’s going to help as well between the fact that you’ve got I mean again like I think that’s what’s got a lot of people obviously so excited yeah about the potential for this offense right absolutely the question is where should our expectations be so yeah I thought what we would do is kind of take a look we’ve got Sam Hartman’s stats now a different offense but we’ve got Sam Hartman’s stats at Notre Dame last year we’ve got Jaden Daniel’s stats at LSU from last season playing for Mike Den Brock so I thought we’d take a look like where potentially do Riley Leonard’s stats when this season is said and done where do they fall are they closer to Sam Hartman are they better than Sam Hartman can he be better than Jaden Daniels so let’s take a look let’s start off with completion percentage okay Sam Hartman completed 63.5% of his passes last season Daniels 72.2% of his pass craziness last season I know I know craziness big time so so where do you think where do you think Leonard Falls this season well he completion persist perc look he he’s not going to he’s not going to complete 72% of his passes okay that that’s obviously not going to happen now he just won that accuracy challenge now I mean he’s hitting moving golf carts Vince he he’s hilling moving golf carts at the Manning Passing Academy the best he’s ever done in his career is 63.9% Right based on the stats I’m looking at 2022 SE and that was his best season by far right now I think that will go up slightly with my Den Brock at the helm and with the wide receivers that he has around him okay so we’ve got 63.5 and 72.2 I would be ecstatic if he hit like the 67 like percent area like that would be that would be great if he got into that neighborhood I and I think that’s possible I’m saying like 66% probably this where I am 66 to 68% for Riley letter I’ll be really curious to see you know like just how much like is it is it just being in this system that sort of helps facilitate that because obviously Daniels from year one to year two just across the board his numbers exploded in in his second year Riley Leonard’s not gonna get a second year under Den Brock but he’s all he he his his best year in 2022 he had already played at a higher level in that season than Jaden Daniels had at Arizona State prior to going to LSU he was still more of a project going from Arizona State to LSU big time Big Time Project yeah yeah agreed exactly all right so I like I said I’m in that 66 to 68% range for Riley Leonard this season what about yards per attempt 8.9 yards per attempt for Hartman last year 11.6 for Daniels this is actually kind of a tough one because and I I’m not real good on what what is good you know what I mean like what what is what is passable for a really good offense kind of a deal you know you you look at those numbers and you see Haron 8.9 you you see you know 11.6 you’d love for him to be in the middle someplace I I mean he’s going to be closer to Hartman I think um than he is Daniels the part of the problem last year for Hartman and the Notre Dame offense is they weren’t downfield enough right like I mean that’s been a continuing problem for Notre Dame really the last few years from you going back to to Brian Kelly to where we are right now I think that we thought that with Hartman it was going to be more downfield last season sure receiving core didn’t help him enough you know all those those different things it’s all intertwined but I think between the fact that I think that Leonard does have a stronger arm and he is going to have receivers who should be able to to complement him more as downfield options I think you know again like is he is he chasing that 11 and a half maybe not but even if it’s if it’s 1.1 yard per attempt better that gets you to 10 yards per attempt right there and I think that that looks pretty good yeah I I double did I’d be in that I’d be a fan of that that’d be great yeah DK has a question for you though fce why do you hate Riley Leonard because it’s just ingrained in me I mean it’s just where I’m at believe me I no one this hates everyone 22 years and younger other than his the kids in his house ah they’re well depends on the day depending on what day it is yeah depends on the day uh but no I look I I’m I’m a Riley Leonard supporter I’m EXC I think he’s gonna be a perfect fit in this offense to be honest with you I’m expecting big things I am personally trying to Tamp down my own expectations at this point I I’ve said this before when we’re talking about you know stat projections and all these other things I’m always way over here in the uh glass half full category I’m trying to lower my expectations so I am not disappointed but at the same time being realistic right and so I’m trying to look at stats from the years before and all these different things but not get too excited and then if he goes over my expectations hey happy days are here again let’s go Andre wants to know what we consider downfield throws 20 25 for more yeah I mean they just they didn’t they didn’t they didn’t stretch the field with they they haven’t stretched the field like look at the year before with Drew Pine it was even you know I’ll have to go back and see if I can find that here real quickly but yeah like you’re talking about the ability to take some shots downfield like an explosive pass play is fairly Loosely Define by what 20 yards down you know like 20 yards a 20 yard pass play is considered an explosive play 20 yards plus right so are they able to hit more of those kind of pass plays yeah I think is is one of the bigger questions because that that just opens everything else up the more you’re able to do that the more you make the safeties play back the more that opens up the Run game the more it opens up other intermediate stuff that can still turn into a a big chunk kind of play if everything isn’t compacted and congested that’s one thing that uh Marcus Freeman talked about not too long ago was like this spring to like the fact that defenses challenged them and dared them to throw the ball downfield last year and Notre Dame just didn’t do it he said that they didn’t make opposing defenses pay enough last year and that’s that’s something that I think that that Riley Leonard with in combination with Mike Den Brock should be able to to uh to do a lot better job of this season absolutely agree and hopefully there won’t be a quarterback afraid to pull the Trigg for whatever reason right for whatever reason and I’m not saying it was all quarterback I’m not saying it was all wide receivers I’m not saying it was all offensive coordinator but it was a combination of all three that’s for sure because there were times that there were open wide receivers that were not getting the ball thrown to them there were times where the quarterback you know didn’t do what he was supposed to do and there were times where the wrong plays were called and so it is equal blame to go around in my opin but there were issues across the board you can’t blame just one of those three right you know people I’m sorry you can’t there was problems with the wide receivers there was problems with the quarterback and there problems with the offensive coordinator there’s blame to go around people it’s not just one or the other or the other no yeah and like usma is saying there were tons of times wide receivers were open yes that’s true that was also true under Drew Pine it wasn’t just to Sam Hartman thing you can go back whatever quarterback the last few years I just I just went back and looked at Drew Pines his yards per attempt was 7.9 so it was a yard less than Sam Hartman had last year honestly I would have thought it was about a yard and a half but still a yard less per attempt that like obviously the lower the number is the less you’re challenging yeah downfield and there were wide receivers as we all sat here and beat our heads against the wall plenty of times two years ago when Drew Pine was the quarterback there were tons of times when guys were open but it was checked down to Michael Mayer most of the time yeah and that’s what’s that’s what’s got to start changing is absolutely getting to that second level the ability to to more consistently be able to hit that second level between again between Den Brock between Riley Leonard between the kind of receivers that they have brought in I think all those things all three of those things should address that fairly well and that’s why I’m confident that like I think 10 yards per uh per attempt is is a solid number I think it’s very attainable with with all that combination that they’ve got this year absolutely okay so passing yardage Sam Hartman 2,689 yards last year Jaden Daniels a few more 3,812 just 1,200 no big deal yeah yeah I think the biggest question question like does Riley Leonard get to 3,000 does he top 2600 where do you think Riley Leonard Falls in terms of his passing yards yeah I think he does top 3,000 but I don’t think he gets a ton over 3,000 because I don’t think that he needs to I think he’s obviously going to be gaining yards on the ground as well I mean look Jaden Daniels also gained yardage on the ground and and I can’t even imagine what his what his rushing yards were plus his passing yards was obviously well over 4,000 so I would say his combination of run running and passing will be around that 3,800 Mark I think that would be where he should be that’s kind of what I’m thinking as well like he he was just a shade under 3,000 in his in his full season at Duke in 2022 had what 700 plus rushing yards to go along with that so that that put him you know that combination it’s nuts just the kind of total yards that Jaden Daniels had last year he was over a thousand rushing yards and almost 3900 passing yards but yeah I agree I think that Riley Leonard is somewhere in the vicinity of 3,000 passing yards and again we’re basing this on probably a 13 game season like do you base this on just the regular season or or are you gonna like 13 with a bowl game thrown in there because I mean that’s whatever like that’s what well I guess Hartman’s stats were were only 12 games for that matter so maybe he’s a little bit more had he decided to play in a b game but yeah it wouldn’t have been a ton more but it would have been more I mean probably add 250 300 to that I mean you look at the success that was had in the bowl game by the quarterback that did play for Notre Dame I feel like there could have been some success there for Hartman as well yeah us SMA 87 we were talking about it the fear with angelli he checks down too quickly and that’s yeah that’s what you know again like he can win football games especially against the schedule that Notre Dame is going to have this season but ultimately if if angelli were to be the guy if something happened to Riley Leonard and and jelly were to be the guy Notre Dame’s ability to play championship football is going to be can Angeli or whoever can he test the field you know just like because I saw usma 87 say it and I think maybe you were responding yeah you did like that’s ultimately Ian book sure the inability to push the ball down field and to be honest with you I blame Brian Kelly for that to a degree because he always preached don’t turn the ball over don’t turn the ball over and it freaking scared kids to not take chances because they were afraid to turn the ball over look if you’re if you’re going to be an explosive offense and push the ball down the field and all those you got you’re gonna have to take a chance you’re GNA have to take a chance and maybe turn the ball over I mean that that you know it’s like Lou Holt said right three things can happen when you throw the ball and two of them are bad right and so either a catch an incompletion or an interception those are the chances that you take and but I just think it was just ingrained into his head so much even after he left Notre Dame he wasn’t throwing the ball down the field because don’t turn the ball over don’t turn the ball he was just like a he was just wound so tight that he couldn’t just go out there and play and that came straight from the top in my opinion absolutely what about touchdown passes Hartman had 24 last season Jaden Daniels 40 at LSU that’s a obviously a pretty big discrepancy and again when I am projecting what Riley Leonard is is going to do from a production standpoint I like to think about his rush yards his you know throw passing touchdowns and all that but at the same time I think he gets past 24 I mean he had 20 in 2022 with Duke I feel like that number is going to CL I think he’ll be right around the 30 Mark and then you add in whatever he does on the ground as well and then you’re going to be in the high 30s I think that’s where I would like him to be I think he’s somewhere around 30 I’m still relatively shocked that Sam Hartman didn’t get to 30 last year like I just but again ju I just think that there was too much too much carryover from like Brian Kelly philosophy in terms of offense and and things like that and I just I I don’t think that it worked out in part due to that you know with who he had as offensive coordinator the system they were running and and the whole thing and I think he got a little bit gun shy by the time it was all like after Louisville and then after Clemson I think he got gunshi with with what he was Will to do yeah so but yeah but I think Leonard’s going to be somewhere around 30 because again you got to factor in like this guy like again like if you look at Daniels just the numbers he had video game numbers basically last year 40 touchdown passes and 10 more touchdown runs and that’ll have to be accounted for with Leonard as well is the touchdown runs and he’s also going to have a really good backfield yeah behind him so you know one one will kind of take away from the other I think but uh so yeah I’m gonna put him right around 30 touchdown passes yeah yep okay and then the interceptions Sam Hartman threw eight last year Daniels threw four and by comparison Riley Leonard had six two years ago at Duke I mean I would love to say he’s going to be closer to the four than to the eight but he had six that’s literally right in the middle of the two I don’t think he’s going to have the opport well he’ll have the opportunity to throw more interceptions that’s silly because he’s putting the ball up in the air a bunch but I I just I’m GNA say that he’s going to be less than eight but more than four so you know whether that’s five six or seven yeah I think that’s the neighborhood that he’s going to be I don’t think he throws more than eight he’s not the kind of kid you look he won the accuracy challenge right he’s an accurate passer I don’t see him throwing a bunch of inaccurate balls I do see him pushing the ball down the field one of those might get picked off you know maybe there’s a baded ball in the air you know those kinds of things so you know I do think he’ll throw some picks but it won’t be in bunches like it was with Sam Hartman would tend to agree with that Andre puts the over under at seven if I was going to do this I’d put it at seven and a half just because then I’ve either got because if it’s seven I’ve got to say six or eight but if it’s seven and a half it can still be seven or eight I would put it at seven and a half and I would probably put it under as well because the other factor in this based on the schedule they’re going to be playing and obviously what we think they’re going to do to this schedule and the defense that that that’s going to be a factor in this as well he shouldn’t be put in a situation where he has to throw a lot of passes in the second half especially in the fourth quarter and he might not even be out there in the fourth quarter I mean that can obviously affect some of his other numbers as well but I think that because of that because they should be playing with comfortable enough leads I don’t think he’s going to be put in the position where he’s got to throw the ball a lot you know obviously with with the exception of what you would probably consider the four big games Texas A&M Louisville Florida State USC even USC is a little bit you know and you know you got to remember the you know the wins the losses that LSU had I mean there was a decent amount of throwing going on because of where those games were and and them trying to come back and and try you know there was a I think there’s there’s going to be more pass attempts for LSU last year than there will be for Notre Dame this year based on the way the games played out so I don’t know there’s going to be as much opportunity for Riley Leonard to hit some of these marks that were hit last year predicting the stats for Riley Leonard I like it we’ll see I’m probably gonna be dead wrong just what you do on July 1 yeah right what will we think on August 1st after we’ve seen a camp what do we think on August 15th after we’ve seen it’s a great question I think I’ll have more to say on August 15th than I will on a you know July 31st because I mean when you think about it we really didn’t get to see like we’ve seen Riley Leonard on Game film and I think that that’s the most important thing but we didn’t get to see him really you know doing any Riley Leonard magic stuff this spring that’s true we got we got to see him warm up a bunch yeah you know that wasn’t all that exciting we’re head and we’re not going to see much on the first day either because they’re going to be out there in helmets and jerseys and that’s it and so we’re not going to see a whole lot there we’re not going to see anything unless they let us see like the Jersey scrimmage that they’re that they have in the fall before they get into you know game prep you know that kind of a thing I think they usually let us see that I’ll have a lot of opinions at that point until then I’m sure you will the jury’s still out my friend the jury is still out I like where things are trending I like what I’m hearing I like what I’ve seen on film all of those things but I need to see him throwing into Notre Dame people under duress if you could walk around in his body you’d feel even better about it right now you’re probably right I’d feel really good about it because I’d be 22 again and a division one athlete so I’ll tell you what some things just ran through my head bet they did I bet they did Father David wants to know if we know how many practices we’re going to get to see no we have not received any kind of schedule yet all we know is that Marcus Freeman in that closed door little sesh a month or so ago said that uh July 31st first day at Camp so that’s all we know typically within a week or so of Camp maybe two we’ll you know we’ll get the itinerary emailed us and yeah maybe a couple weeks down the line yeah my my guess is we’ll get the first practice we’ll get a scrimmage and then we’ll get a bunch of five periods you know what I mean we’ll get two full practices one doesn’t really matter because it’s the first day but they always give that to us and we’ll get a scrimmage I would a hope and then a bunch of hey you get to watch them warm up and then do some individual drills and maybe see the kickers kick and the punter punt which this year is actually something that I want to see because they’re both knew yeah so there will be more eyes on the punter for sure during training camp Mr Thor James renel yep just cracks me up man how he’s already who he is and he has done nothing I know nothing I’ve always said Vince you should be from Missouri show me state like you’ve got to see it I do to see it to believe it need to see something I need to see something you know I need to see all these parts working together that’s what I need to see my only question for you right now are you ready for Rapid Fire oh that was a professional segue sir you like that you like that you’re gonna get a round of applause for me all right I am so ready for Rapid Fire yes okay so we did some wide receiver predictions at the end of last week and one of our listeners sent us a message saying we’re sleeping on Dion KY and KK Smith because we didn’t have either of them in any of our predictions remember we were trying to predict minimum 30 receptions 500 yards those were the benchmarks that we were looking at and you know in terms of our confidence of who would get there so do you buy or sell that we’re actually sleeping on KY and Smith huge cell huge sell and here’s why you can’t sleep on a senior okay we we haven’t had an opportunity or we have had the opportunity to see Dion KY does he have natural receiver ability sure does but for many different reasons he hasn’t been a factor for the first three years that he’s been on campus and so if he does break out awesome but again if we’re going to talk about being from the show me state I’m G to need to see a full year of Dion KY either healthy and or on the field because you didn’t get passed up by guys that are younger than you right because that’s been the problem in the past and he hasn’t proven that he can be a relied on wide receiver and so that’s why there’s no way we’re sleeping on Dion KY I’m sorry he has the ability to do it but he hasn’t even come close to doing it up to this point absolutely he has shown in flashes that he can do it in practice like we saw he had a nice little blue gold game but I’m not going to get B out of shape because he’s been here for four years now the the guy has 16 career catches for a little over 300 yards in his first three seasons nine receptions for 192 yards two years ago is his best season right he’s behind Jaden Thomas and Bo Collins going into training camp so why should I be buying right you know High stock in Dion KY and it’s it’s not a shot at Dion KY but the fact is he’s been here for three years so we have a history with him the only thing that he can do is go out and ball out in training camp and show that he deserves to be at least ahead of one of those two guys because that would put him on the two deep which would mean he’s in the top six in the rotation which is a rotation that Mike Brown is looking at so I can’t buy I can’t buy on De Dion KY regardless of how much talent is there again we know it but he he has to show that he can go out and do it in a game and stay healthy at the same time because that was obviously a Factor last year as terms of KK Smith you know again like didn’t play in a game last season no he had a flash or two during the Spring but there’s not enough to say man KK Smith is someone they’re gonna really rely on going into his sophomore season he’s he’s second uh at at field receiver on the depth chart going into training camp behind Chris Mitchell the FIU transfer cam Williams is also there so like what is you know what is Cam Williams going to do there’s a lot for KK Smith to prove but there’s no reason at this point right now to be buying high on either one of these guys because they just haven’t shown us anything to to give us that inclination at this point and yeah KK right now by my estimation is the fourth slot receiver that you’re pretty far away from getting on the field as the fourth slot receiver so he’s got a lot of work to do to bounce past all of those guys and so maybe he can do it maybe he can’t but he’s not a guy I’m putting my money on based on where he’s at on the dep ch right now I mean does Smith get more reps than Jaden Harrison right you know or or uh fison or GRE house like right no the answer is no so best right now he’s the number six receiver at best oh my gosh yeah at absolute best and it’s it’s he’s way past that at right now now look that doesn’t take anything away from he didn’t play all year last year because he had a shoulder injury and the whole thing I saw him more on the bicycle on the sideline than I did in a game so he’s got a long way to go he’s got a long way to go yeah and you know in terms of production last year Tobias marow weather was the sixth most productive wide receiver 14 catches 284 yards so like if that’s like kind of use that as your barometer like if as you’re looking at KK Smith a guy with zero experience excuse me right now like are you confident that he’s going to get to that even like as of right now again there’s there’s just nothing that says that he’s even gonna get to that that doesn’t mean that he’s not still gonna have a a nice career at some point but he’s just he’s much lower on the depth chart because they went out and brought in a guy a lot of guys with a proven track record which is needed to do if you name off you know your top six receivers right and we did this the other day I’ve still have it written down on my notepad right here then you start naming seven8 nine 10 like where where does he end up are you going to play him before Gilbert right are you gonna play him before Dion KY are you going to play him before cam Williams are you going to you know like if you say no to all of those then he’s 10th right now of a six-man rotation so you know he’s got a lot of work to do I’m not saying he can’t do it but again I’m not willing to put my money where that statement is what do you think about this from Brian he says there will not be a six-man wide receiver rotation with Den Brook maybe four if they want to be a real offense oh so you’re saying there’s going to be even less than four less than six yeah this is what Brian is saying wow like I I think that there that there’s still a six because because this is reps this is not like everyone’s out there you know on on playground getting balls thrown at him every other play you’ve still got a you know kind of spell guys give them a playoff here and there all that kind of stuff and then you know and someone else then comes in on the play and obviously you’re not even passing yeah every play so it’s not like like the you know yeah there will be a core of probably three to four guys and those are those are going to be the guys who accumulate the the highest level of production but guys number six7 and8 you know 5 six seven and eight whatever they happen to be they’ll still be on the field but that doesn’t mean you’re having f at him all the time so that’s right there there’s going to be six at minimum in the rotation that play When the first team offense is on the field 100% that’s not changing and they will be subbing they’re not going to go Tempo all the time that negates Tempo if that’s what you do all the time then teams can match up against it because guess what your kids get tired too so you can’t always go Tempo that doesn’t that doesn’t work so there are going to be time when they’re subbing there are going to be packages there are going to be changes in the offense it is not going to be the same four guys all the time there will be at least six in the rotation 100 per. right you don’t bring in as many guys as they brought in and especially if you want to make it over the course of the season and again think about the schedule like think about the schedule in your bigger games Texas A&M Florida State you know we all know what the bigger games are sure in the bigger games the rotation probably does get paired a little bit you want your better players out there on the field as much as possible but in those other games I mean you’re not just going to run the same four guys all the time and then they’re not gonna have any legs by the time November comes around I feel very good if I was to say to you Sean in the first game of the season Texas A&M okay six is the number do you think Notre Dame will play six receivers in that game on offense period do you think that will be a question mark I should say do you think Notre Dame will play six receivers on offense in that game not talking special teams none of that do you think six guys will line up on offense at any point in the Texas A&M game now this is a little bit of a trick question I’m gonna say yes because of the heat because the Heat’s going to be a factor I absolutely think you’re going into the season yeah from a packages standpoint from a heat standpoint from a just wanting to get different bodies out there based on matchups like yes there’s going to be six at least at least right so yeah there’s going to be at least six in the rotation if you’re going to run out six at A&M you’re going to run out six against Florida State you’re going to run out six against you know you know uh USC who you know name your opponent right there’ll be more they get run out against the the lower opponents because then you got garbage time I’m talking about the starting offense when Riley Leonard is the quarterback how many wide receivers are they going to play it will be a minimum of six I agree yeah I totally agree with that fill in the blank Notre Dame commit Noah grubs winning the accuracy challenge at the Under Armour future 50 over the weekend is blank cool great like I I I think it’s I think it’s great it’s a nice feather in his cap you know he’s still got two years of high school excuse me two years of high school left I’m not ready to you know anoint this kid after his sophomore year no anointing lotion no no annointing lotion coming at this point and so I I think it’s cool it’s great I mean if I want anything from a Young quarterback it’s going to be accuracy because as he gets older the arm strength will then follow and he will get stronger you know bigger stronger you know the whole thing so if you’re starting from a point of accuracy that’s fantastic so awesome and this is a guy who’s going into his Junior season of high school so he’s he’s obviously still pretty young yes but what you want from these guys especially once they are committed is you want them when they go to these events where there are other recruitable and you know committed themselves players at the same position you want them to be able to excel when they’re in the same on the same field as those guys so yeah it’s you know it’s cool it’s it’s no end all Beall by any means but the fact that it’s an accuracy thing I think is really good as well you know the more accurate great place to start man but yeah just keep shining just keep shining right got another year keep shining keep smiling that all right so got another Riley Leonard comment this one another one from down at the madting Passing Academy this weekend this one he’s talking about 2025 commit Duce night always willing to learn always asking questions and for a guy who like you said might be the you know highest Mississippi quarterback recruit of all time it’s impressive for him to be as humble as he is and just so eager to learn you know I brought him over to Fair Hope to come train with me and all he did was you know kept his head down ask questions got his reps when he needed to get his reps had no problem you know throwing check Downs it was just he’s a great kid all right Vince so uh does any of that say anything to you I mean no not really to be honest with you because if he’s asked about the kid who’s coming to Notre Dame what is he supposed to say sound like he’s going to cut him up no right like I don’t know I wasn’t really impressed with this kid he was laate all the time you know he was laate on his I what is he supposed to say he’s supposed to talk glowingly about this kid it’s great that he said all those positive things he was very specific with a couple of things that he said that’s great I just don’t take put a whole lot of stocking I just you know yeah you’re right it’s not like he’s going to rip him apart but I he did talk about going down to Fair Hope and Deuce was part of that group that went down to Fair Hope and when you just continued to connect all these dots with all all of this right Mississippi swirl that’s that’s been out there and then you look at the fact that this uh this running back deer decommitted from Old Miss over the weekend the fourth decommitment the second fourstar not good decommitment and what the last week um I just think that all this it’s a lot of subterfuge out there with with Duce Knight like I I just feel like this guy is is locked in to Notre Dame and the fact that you hear Riley lonard you know out there speaking so glowingly of him even if politically maybe that’s what you know really the only answer that he could get I just think that I would just be putting your your fears to rest if you’re a Notre Dame fan in terms of what’s going on with t night yeah I feel I’ve never been worried about him switching to Old Miss that has never been a thing I don’t think he has been all Notre Dame it’s been very obvious he’s been very outspoken about his love for Notre Dame he’s recruiting for for Notre Dame he’s doing all these things and I just don’t see the extra you know what I mean it’s all for clicks it’s you know even when he’s asked questions he talks about Notre Dame like he doesn’t talk about old Miss he just says yeah I’ve gone there that okay I we just got done going to like 10 different colleges that doesn’t mean anything you know what I mean like it I’m sorry it just doesn’t mean a whole lot that’s his inate school of course he’s going like I don’t see a problem with it but yeah so Vince most of College athletics like the governing the governance is run by the NCAA they have one president president of the NCAA runs the entire show college football runs a little bit differently of course its Championship is run by the college football playoff while the NCAA sponsors the championships for all of those different sports this is a question that I’ve seen floated out recently do you buy or sell each college sport should have its own commissioner so you would have a commissioner of football men’s basketball women’s basketball etc etc etc I sell it because I bet you that there’s a Deputy Commissioner that’s in charge of every sport I would I would almost bet that uh that’s the way it is but are they actually making decisions for those Sports it’s mostly these NCAA so what do you mean by making decisions like if you’re the if you’re the commissioner of swimming like what what decisions basically commissioner basically you know okay let’s say swimming I I don’t know what the rule change would be but the NCAA subcommittee you know whatever group is going to get together and they’re going to run this vote right and you know this subcommittee is going to make these decisions you know for for the sport of swimming or baseball or softball or or whatever it happens to be yeah so yeah there might be a Deputy Commissioner who is at least theoretically assigned to that sport but how much actual you know input that person has in in how the sport is run I don’t know I don’t want one person in charge of a whole sport I don’t want that I want more voices than that honestly so it’s a sell for me I don’t want person in charge I want more than that so I don’t like it at all I will say that with the way things are going with football I don’t even think they should belong in the NCAA I think they should just break off and do their own thing and that’s a whole different conversation and there should be like a committee that’s in charge of football like I’m fine with that if that if you want to call it the college football playoff committee then fine but I think football should be its own separate entity and then the NCAA should just be in charge of the other sports and like if you’re making a rule change in like track and field or something it should not be one guy being deciding that rule should be changed it should be you know there should be more voices than that yeah and I mean again this is an idea that I’ve seen sort of floated externally and you know when you when you look at the responsibilities of the commissioners of professional sports whether it’s the NFL baseball you know NBA whatever it happens to be there’s more you know there’s more than just rules changes I you know because like the owners of those teams you know essentially become the subcommittee right and they vote and they do all this you know so it’s not just the the commissioner making the decision but at the same time like one of the bigger one of the bigger responsibilities of the commissioner of each professional sport is negotiating the TV contracts and that’s all done it’s all completely different when it comes to college so I don’t disagree that that maybe there needs to be a you know like college football maybe needs its own commissioner since it is run so differently but there needs to be you know whether it’s the university presidents or you know kind of a revolving you know group of presidents Andor athletic directors that would would need to be under that commissioner I think because of you know again the the fact that the NCAA essentially is putting on the championships for all these other sports I don’t think that Commissioners for each of those Sports make as much sense I could see it for football for the other sports not so much yeah because I I think that when you were talking about the like the NFL model and the MLB model and things like that right and you’ve got the commissioner and the Commissioners usually appointed by the owners right the owners all they’re worried about is one sport right I mean that’s all they’re worried about now you’ve got institutions that have 28 Varsity Sports right you know like that could get very complicated for the athletic director then to be on the board or whatever for 28 different sports and be involved like I think that’s asking an awful lot of the individual institutions uh to have the best interest of every single sport you know with each commissioner like that would get complicated and that would be a lot you know Josh says schools have ads why do we need a commissioner for each sport as well because those ads are only worried about their school their school they’re not worried about every school that has swimming they’re not worried about every school that has track you know what I mean like so the priorities of an athletic director are completely different than the priorities of a commissioner of a sport compl completely different right all right let’s predict Penn State’s record for the season it’s been a little while since we’ve uh done one so Penn State has an over under season win total of nine and a half okay okay at West Virginia to start things off I think this could be a should be a fairly competitive game should be but I think Penn State wins I do too Bowling Green Kent State the next week we see any scenario where we see upsets shouldn’t be should not okay all right so now we’re three and 0 Penn State’s three and 0 yep Illinois Big 10 opener that’s a home game should be a win Illinois is not great I agree so now we’re at four and then the next month gets a little bit more this where gets interesting no doubt about it UCLA USC Wisconsin Ohio State really the meat and potatoes of the sched so UCLA win concur yeah new coach you know they’re coming over from the the other coast I think that’s definitely a win it’s a home game yep we’re talking about Penn State home game for y for Penn State against UCLA okay so they’re five and0 correct now they go to USC for the first time so here’s where the nine and a half comes into play right because that means that they’re going to are they going to lose three or they going to lose two and the next three weeks will kind of tell the tale as to whether that is the case or not in my opinion right so going to USC at this point you’re hoping that USC I believe is undefeated because you know if you’re an under Dame fan and you may not like this but you want USC to be good right and I don’t know I’m trying to pull up their schedule here I’ll look for it here real quick because I do want to see what their schedule looks like going into that gamec got it man so they got LSU Utah State at Michigan home against Wisconsin at Minnesota they host Penn State they could very easily be three and two going into that game I think they’ll have at least one loss going three and two four- one um that’s kind of where USC is probably going to be at that point and then the nitty lions are coming cross country to play USC that’s I mean it’s about it’s about a pick them game for me yeah to be honest with you I’m gonna give Penn State the L here I’m gonna say yeah wins USC wins yeah I think so too I’m I’m with you on that one so now it’s five and one and Penn State goes to Wisconsin the next week now think about the travel here you’re going all the way out to USC then you come all the way home and then you’re going halfway across the country to Wisconsin because it’s at Wisconsin right and Wisconsin’s not going to be a slouch this year I wouldn’t think okay so they’ve got Western Michigan South Dakota to open the schedule then they host Alabama which that should be a loss I would think wow then they’re at USC I didn’t even realize they were playing this year to be quite honest they’re at USC they’re home against Purdue they’re at ruter and they’re at Northwestern before they host Penn State okay so I think Wisconsin could legitimately have two losses in here um they might have one I will give this one to Penn State I think they bounce back at this point if they bounce back I agree with that bounce back after USC even though it’s another road game because really this becomes for them staying in playoff contention that becomes a must-win assuming that they lose at USC and I might even amend mine a little bit and just say between USC and Wisconsin I think they split those games whichever order yep that they happen to come in yep so agreed so they’ll be six and one coming out of Wisconsin hosting Ohio state with their playoff hopes still on the line in the balance loss I’m sorry they’re not beating Ohio State it’s um I don’t see it they could host them it doesn’t matter I still think that’s a loss so now they’re six and two playoff hopes presumably dashed unless they’re the Big 10 they’re still in the big sneak into the Big 10 championship game yeah here’s the thing about Penn State and I said this when we were previewing the Big 10 the other day Penn State would have made it into the playoff the 12 team playoffs six of the last eight years because they live in that nine to1 win window right every single year you know what I mean like they have all the hype in the world they lose two games and they’re out of the four team playoff they would have been in the 12 team playoff most of the time I think that’s a another I think that’s where they’re at again this year if I’m being honest so I don’t disagree yeah yeah here’s the problem sloppy Joe says they’ll be undefeated going to Ohio state do they beat oh if Penn State is undefeated okay well I’m sorry what we gonna say Vin here if Penn State is is undefeated going into Ohio State they still lose but either way they’re not GNA beat Ohio State I’m sorry it’s not going to happen the problem with the last four games and I don’t want to rush the situation no that’s okay because I was kind of lumping them together as well as I looked at it so they’re home against Washington at Purdue at Minnesota home against Maryland if they’ve got two losses coming out of Ohio State I think they lose one of those games oh I don’t know which one I don’t think it matters to be perfectly honest with you I think they lose one of those games and that puts them in nine and three and I guess I would take the under of the nine and a half yeah I think that I would agree with that because then what you know because yeah if if you’ve got two losses you lose that Ohio State game and that’s your second loss then all of a sudden what is there to play for down the stretch because again you might because of how big the conference is and who knows what’s going to happen week in out you know like because the SEC and the Big 10 are both going to be pushing for three slots each if not a fourth depending on what the the you know the landscape is you know what I mean and so I just if they’re 10 and two I think they get in to be perfectly honest with you if they’re nine and three I don’t think they do DK’s coming at you that’s because Jesse’s not here I’ll take someone’s got to pick up Jesse slack right that’s fine says when love when Vince speaks and absolutes just put $10,000 on PSU over OSU yeah if you put $10,000 on Penn State to beat Ohio State you’re in line to win a lot of money because they will not be favored in that game no not a chance egg bacon bisit says Penn State never wins with a shoe under Franklin it’s actually a home game so home game out I’m sure n i mean we’ve been we’ve been waiting how many years right for Penn State to be able to to beat Ohio State but they haven’t so I’m I’m not going to bank on them this year and yeah I’m I’m going to go under as well I’m going to say a nine and three season for Penn State I like your logic yeah I mean and they it’s hard to pick out maybe where some of those losses will end up I just feel like they’ll have three and so one of them will definitely be to Ohio State there’s my absolute for you and then the other two who knows because it’s it’s Franklin he’s he’s not a good coach I’m sorry good good for a loss some place yeah okay this this is one that I saw The Dan Patrick Show use recently and I thought it was kind of funny if you received a championship ring because like the theme of like you had the College World Series and the NBA champion you know like the finals and stuff going on so you had different championships if you received a championship ring and it had an error on it would you a send it back and get it fixed or B just keep it this is easy for me this is an easy question and I don’t know what the argument is on the other side but I’m sending it back to get it fixed how often are you going to win a champion especially at the professional level like how often is this going to happen I want my ring to be correct like did they make the second D little did they what what’s the mistake you know what I mean like if they spell my name wrong I’m getting it fixed right 100% it’s not like they have to pronounce your name but right right the minimum is you know like spell the name right whatever because there actually was did you see the Chiefs actually maybe that’s where they got this the Chiefs there was a mistake was there but it was like it was inside you know how like they they put like an engraving on the inside they put like the like the seeds of the teams that they you know played in the playoffs okay and stuff like that and there was a mistake uh on one of the teams or you know that they played against how does that happen I mean seriously it’s a good question those things are worth Buu dollars like how does that happen yeah and like that one who’s actually even gonna look at that the inside of the Ring to see that but yeah like you know they spell your whatever it happens to be it’s like hey sorry there there’s a mistake on this ring yeah so yeah 100% like if I because it’s it’s not like it’s on the team it is on whoever made the ring to get it right so send it back and get it right because it’s something that you’re presumably theoretically going to have for the rest of your life you want it to be right you don’t want there always to be a mistake on it right and Josh says most often those mistakes make it worth even more awesome I’m not selling it right like that’s mine I I mean I’m not okay knowing who I am as a person if I happen to if I was a professional athlete and I won a championship ring I’m not going to find myself destitute enough to have to sell my championship ring those are the ones that get into circulation are the people that blow all their money and need to sell it I’m not selling it why do I care much it’s worth it’s not the point of getting a championship ring it’s like oh I wonder I’m going to get this appraised I want to see how much no I would not sell it Josh so you can say I might sell it down the road I’m not selling my championship ring period end of discussion not yeah I mean you so what’s a m you know because like like when I think about this it’s like the uh the infamous Billy Ripken baseball card do you remember that where there was an F there was an F bomb on the or something like that so like yeah so that card is worth more as a result because that made it through there whereas if it was just a typical Billy Ripken card it wouldn’t be worth anything but you know like you’re probably talking about the difference in what you know like maybe $55,000 or something like that if you’re actually going to sell it yeah down the road I don’t know I I just I would just never sell something like that that’s just not who I am I mean I I I earn that thing dang it like I want to show that off to people I want to have that in a place of honor like that is not like I would be it would just be a terrible thing is if some I I see some you know degenerate Gambler has my ring like that well let’s you know like let’s be honest let’s say you or I got a ring for something you know right you have rings you have rings from the Women’s Championship right right in the College World Series right yeah and and actually like like the ACC championship last year for that matter but what I’m saying is yeah but that’s my point no one wants the Sha Styers ring right right they want the Neel Ivy ring they want the Ruth Riley ring you know like they don’t want the Sha Styers ring so like that’s the only you know so like oh so there’s a mistake on the Sha Styers ring so now it’s gonna bring what $55 instead of 45 you know like but you would never try to sell those Rings those mean something to you right you know what I mean and you weren’t even on the team you were part of the organization you part of it you’re I mean I think I think you’re an integral part of the situation but like you weren’t you weren’t even on the court and those rings are something that you would never sell right you know what I mean like I don’t know I just yeah exactly and yes I would like and you know like in both cases the first thing okay Styers STI exactly yes Brian has a good question and I want you to answer this because this for me but he says his question is Vince would you wear it and when have you ever worn the rings that you have gotten yeah very rarely just because there aren’t a whole lot of instance you know and it’s funny like my College World Series ring okay when we the last time I wore it is when we all you know Jesse and I and you know we met up with our boys Lego yeah in in Omaha and you know so I I took the College World Series ring and I wore it when I was out there and then you know so like after Notre Dame won that opening round game we’ve talked about this we went over there’s a big you know like not a party but there was a big you know sort of social gathering in the lobby and the bar area of the of the team Hotel there were Notre Dame people everywhere and I had my ring on that night and and Pete gave me a kind of gave me hard time afterwards he’s like oh I noticed you had you know you were flashing that you know that ring and it’s like I’ve got a freaking College World Series ring why wouldn’t I wear it to something like this absolutely you know that’s where you do it though right yes so like if I ever I had a I had a coach who won a state championship as a coach in in high school football right and so he’s got the blue ring so in Indiana you win you get a blue ring if you get second place you get a red ring okay and so he would wear his state championship ring on game nights on Friday nights he would get it out he’ put it on like that was the thing that he did right that’s the kind of thing I would wear a ring to it would have to have some sort of a meaning to it or you know a reunion of that team or right something along those lines it wouldn’t be like hey I’m going to Duncan I’m gonna throw my ring on like that’s not and that’s a thing it’s like there aren’t enough event you know like is like in terms of the the Women’s National Championship ring like probably twice a year when a big game comes up I’ll throw that ring on you know right kind of thing and the ly actually wears hers quite a bit still the 2001 there you go Championship probably big games you know that kind of a thing I see her wearing hers all the time when we’re sitting there for the the pregame interview and stuff like right no Joe I’m not talking about the fancy roach hotel and Council Bluffs I was talking about we we went to the hotel where the actual team was staying where there was you know more than questionable things going on in and around you know let’s let’s just say that uh the hotel that we stayed at didn’t have a bar they didn’t have a you know like they didn’t have a uh a proper Lobby you know let’s put it that way so but yeah that’s I mean very few in far and you know like maybe even every once in a while like I see prer Tim prer MH uh like he’ll he’s got a College World Series ring from that same se you know same season I’ll see him wearing it to a football game now and then and yeah really you know for media covering the team and stuff like that I mean there are you you can count them on one hand team you know actual media members that follow the team the whole season right and I’m sure he was rewarded for that I mean he a baseball Alum as well which I’m sure doesn’t hurt that situation but yeah that’s awesome Yep yeah I’m trying to think you know otherwise it’s just like very few and far between you know they mostly stay I’ve got like a little little box that I keep them in with with some other stuff that’s awesome like that is so cool you break it out every now and then clean it up y so how so the question is next year with women’s basketball we all think they’re going to be really really good right right how what is the basement of games that I need to show up to and do with you to get a ring to get a ring that’s all I want to know that’s good question that’s a good question because did your co-host get a ring too because she does she’s not there all the time uh she is there for the big games well I think that uh I think that she contributes to the program in in other ways that probably yeah like that’s fair automatically gets a ring which I will never be able to do so there’s there is that salty um I would I would wait major that there could have been a by hour I know there was a monthly rate because like when we pulled into when we pulled into the parking lot it was one of those you know kind of like it’s a few steps below a Motel 6 but you know like the Motel 6 where you’ve got the balcony you’ve got an upper level and a lower level and you’ve got like a balcony and a rail on the outside of the uh of the of the motel we walked up and there was a guy sitting outside and this is after midnight he’s sitting outside his room on the balcony in a lawn chair eating chicken nice yes I thought he say he was like urinating off the balcony no fortunately no as far as we know but uh yeah that’s great that’s fantastic door was always locked can imagine all right well that’s going to do it for tonight appreciate you being here Ryan will be in for Jesse will be in as well I think I need to check and see if he’s gonna bring back that whiteboard because we got the Fourth of July of course on Thursday Thursday what I’m thinking is are you gonna be here Friday Friday Friday Friday I think so yeah I’ve got it on the calendar so yeah I’m thinking what we’re GNA do since there’s no show on Thursday I was thinking about a thre man we in we out Friday okay I’m in about that you haven’t done we in we out before so I’m in okay see I’m in for we in we out we in for that I think that’s what we’re gonna do so just just so everyone kind of knows what’s going to happen nice later this week all right well that’s going to do it hit that like button before you leave if you would we do appreciate it Joe says yes okay Joe just for you boom cha ching we will talk to you tomorrow on IV Nation Sports Talk
