you time now for coming in hot with Brent Wallace and former Ottawa Senator Jason [Music] York happy Thursday everybody prent Wallace alongside Jason York and Sean Simpson happy July 4th for those who you are celebrating just a quick housekeeping note Nick Jensen is uh still working out so he’ll join the show in a bit maybe 20 30 minutes from now so um we have some s cheddar to get to good morning gentlemen good morning good morning nice ni Nicki Jensen Oh I thought hey right-handed D club uh Wings draft pick or Wings alumni actually but I thought Wally at least have the American flag going hey J that’s right yeah I don’t want to over well I do have uh a little I guess a note to tell I’m going to the US Embassy or us ambassadors residence this afternoon for their annual July 4th party really yeah that come about you like he’s he’s close friends with stuntman stew now you have to wear khakis and you have to have a a button-up polo shirt and you have to be sweaty like a pig you have to be sweaty like a pig to really fit in uh I did order a new jacket from my good friend UK who uhud makes uh clothes uh he does the he does the uh alumni team Yorkie so your jacket would be made from tup Taylor my jacket is awesome but it’s skin tight I can’t even get it on like that’s the European styling I’m like Tommy Boy uh the fatat guy in the little suit are you using Steve Martins is that what happened and I do have a I got a puck so I’ve been there before whatever but they so I got a puck from the US embassy it’s so anyway hold I have not been I’ve seen it from the AO River it must be a hell of a view right I mean that is a gorgeous gorgeous piece of propert pretty mass and massive anyway so there’ll be like I don’t know by the way there’s like 400 people that’s it’s not just me and the Ambassador sitting down oh Yorkie and I didn’t get invited so hey that’s good it was probably an invitation for three Yorkie and he cut us off taking the wife and kidsy your wife coming in hot leave for sage I’m taking yeah oh nice oh good Le anyway let’s get on with it shall we uh speaking of everybody getting getting out and enjoying the weather there was chatter I know Jacob CH spoke the other day uh about um that he didn’t play his best hockey but there was a lot of chatter that he didn’t get along in the room uh and there was friction between him and clo jeru I would like to tell you that those two played golf together so yesterday so not sure how much friction there is that it’s so funny what gets there i s there’s always going to be disagreements there’s going to be things that go on the room there’s fights and practice sometimes the thing is uh hockey players in general they forget they move on and I I think it’s healthy when when stuff like that happen you get a team that’s just like sits there everybody agrees ah this is fun you usually don’t win like some of the best teams ever there’s disagreements but no everyone’s different and uh I heard the same thing I talked to some people I I heard there was no issues Jacob Trick’s a good guy good person good family listen it wasn’t a good fit like it wasn’t a good fit from day one so it’s you move on jansen’s coming in we got him coming on in 25 minutes and let’s go I I believe though Yorkie there was friction in the room and the reason I say that is and I don’t mean it on a grand scale I just when you’re losing and you’re losing that much and you think that you should be performing a whole lot better then everybody gets antsy and ornery with everyone and I believe that there was upset people in the room imagine you go to your job and you know if you if things keep happening the way they are like someone’s getting fired or someone’s leaving the office like that makes people uncomfortable now you go back to the movie slapshot and you think of when the plant was closing the friction that that caused in the room and you end up no but but in this case guys you had expectations here’s something a little bit different and I’ll talk about Cher after this but when you go into a year guys people actually expected we all expect them to be a good team when you’re out of the playoffs I care what athlete You Are by the 20 game Mark when you’re fooling yourself about playing meaningful games guys you should be pissed off now as far as Jake trickin it was never a fit because they didn’t do their homework neither he or Shabaka play the right side and I’ll be honest with you Jake Chan I’m not sure what he is the games I watch in Arizona was up and down he did stay healthy he did do some good things offensively he didn’t play very well here in Ottawa Saul removed the locker room stuff and all the rumors uh it wasn’t a fit and you wish him all the best one of the greatest and I don’t know him well but certainly from the dad and the grandfather one of the greatest Ottawa families of all time so just wish him well and you hope it’s a fit in Washington or wherever he ends up going forward it’s like when you get traded to a team you wanna you want to you want to put your best foot forward you want to do what you do best and it’s like okay let’s bring in Jacob Checker oh guess what we already got Sanderson who’s coming into a superstar and Shabbat who are left shot guys so uh we’ll try and we’re gonna try and figure out a way how to make this work it just yeah people have no idea how that upsets the apple cart it’s like that’s why and I’ve saw so many people talk about well Chan’s a better player than Jenson and this and that it’s not always about the most talented player it’s about the fit and that’s what that’s what good teams good general managers and good Scouts do they make sure when they do trades that it fits like yeah it’s not rocket science no it’s not and one of the great things I thought Ottawa did when they made the debret trade and brought him over for 9 million was putting him on the second power play and then also having two power plays in training camp and then starting out with one power play that didn’t involve him to start the season that’s good planning that sets you up for good good things to happen because you know when he came in he’s like I could I totally understand this these are five of the best players in the world I didn’t expect to be on the power play the only thing that generates points for me because I’m really not that great at even strength but hey oh sver we I don’t want to I don’t want I don’t want Pick It Old Wounds here I was I don’t want to do the Barry horror but that that that was just such a bad bad unthought of move from the start the only thing it did this is what it did and people can remember that summer it sold tickets yeah it sold it sold that’s what it did it it brought back I remember people were excited that summer oh it was a summer of I think they called it but that summer didn’t last very long because then the season season starts and then all these parts need to work the right way you just yeah like to my point there so you hit the nail on the head like he must have been because this is what happens you you go and it’s the first day of power play practice the brink probably showed up to the rink he was ready to go you see the lines on the I’m on the second power play this ain’t gonna go well so the one thing I just want to get to because it’s come up with Jonas Corpus Salo a bit yesterday in his quote and with Jacob chran in his quote and it was so Chi was asked what happened in Ottawa and he Saidi like I felt like I wasn’t playing at my best was and he was a bit frustrated but he goes I think quote uh I think the coaching change and ownership change was tough on a lot of the uh guys there was a lot of noise it just seemed like a lot of distraction for our group we’ve never seemed to be uh all on the same page and really take a step as a team together um so one it talks about not everybody being on the same page obviously just quoted it but like you get the sense that they keep using the owner and I Yorkie we had said this at the beginning when the ownership change happened and that Dorian wasn’t fired right away like it was going to take time to get this all start working again and everybody get assimilated in and that’s exactly what’s happened yeah for sure but I I’ll tell you when when you’re in the dressing room you’re getting ready to play the game you’re not damn it man this really bothering me this ownership change I’m not sure if I’m going to be able to play this game tonight like gez I can’t focus on the game like we changed owners like how am I that Yorkie it was I don’t we don’t have enough talent in this room to get this done there is more than enough talent in that room it just it’s like we just said you’ve gota well look at the Boston Bruins for example they they did pretty good with out of number one Center they they basically took Charlie Coyle who is a really good number three Center and they transferred him into their number one Center and they managed to win some hockey games but they play the right way the S well you heard when ja came in Jac’s this team does not play the right way it was like a total it was like he had to take these guys and bring them to a camp and and and and dewire the way they were thinking about playing the game of like Tim stza was a perfect example all a talent in the world but wanted to play East West all the time all the time East West when you play East West all the time things happen Conor McDavid can get away with it but that’s about it um but he so he had reprogram him Wingers flying The Zone all the time jacqu had to come in and totally change out this that was the problem and then obviously the goal tending was an issue too but talent for me it wasn’t Talent it’s just playing the right way when talented guys decide to play the right way you can win some hockey games yeah and as far as going through that I go back to Tyler Sean when he was with Claude Julian it is going to be the process nobody likes it what’s Claude doing putting him on the wing he didn’t trust him as a center you’re going to go through that with Timmy stoa and a coaching change like that Wally is weird because the guy’s coming in I don’t know how jacqu and I’m not saying that he’s older but how it fit when basically he’s a substitute teacher everyone knew he was holding over and the season was lost it was done like that whole mindset now as far as ownership he can kind of back it up you hope I don’t mind the approach that they took initially of let’s assess this let’s look around they knew from an employee standpoint where things were going to go and they probably know what their amateur staff people are looking and saying well this year’s draft I’m sure they’ve decided on what changes they’re going to make they’ve been very methodical about it and they’ve been very methodical about their approach of making changes put together the hockey team as far as corpos Salo and Chen I thought it was a little much but again I also respect the fact that you’re talking to the media but you’re talking about seasoned veterans you’re talking about Chen coming in here all the hope all the excitement and as far as Corpus Salo didn’t perform great and the playoffs signed as a free agent the last thing I should be worrying about is a veteran golender coming in and worrying about the noise around him quite simply as a goaler in York’s point you just got to stop the puck and he was not good from day one yeah well like even look at like look for look at Arizona last year for a while they were playing some pretty good hockey playing in a college rink with 4,000 fans talk all the time of the team moving somehow this team was pretty pretty good for I know they [ __ ] the bed at the end of the year but they’re able to to do some good things for a while it it all depends on it starts it always starts at the top what’s the message how we’re playing what time of team are going to be and that’s why from day one this year you’ve got you’ve got the new staff coming in you’ve got everybody in their roles you Green’s gonna be the head coach bomb Gartner is your D coach Mike yo is GNA be your your tactician he’s like your guy that’s uh very organized you got Alfie in there so it’s a new plan you got the goal so I’m thinking things are going to be better it’s going to be a better start but it’s it always starts at the top the old staff you had three head coaches on it it was doomed to fail now everybody and like Travis Green got to pick a staff too so it’s going to be it’s gon to be much better from the start all right we’re moving on uh one is Shane Pinto like okay so the roster basically set they could really use a fourth line Center for being honest although Michael amadio can play CER he can uh so but they I still think and i’ we put our stop truck there just I’m going to call it a place filler for now because I don’t know if he gets it but yeah I think of what they’ve done so here let me do this here’s this year’s lineup okay here is starting here is opening night last season lineup the ones in red are gone is your lineup better today than it was on September the 11th I think it is uh opening night what do you think simmer what do you think well again as far as the placement I hate one of the things when you use depth charts and I’ll go back to in Washington at one point on paper we had Robert Lang we had yogger we had bonder we had goner we had kig go back to some of the old Ranger teams people will pull up rosters and say wow that must have been a great team well where were the players at how did they end up fitting when you look at the roster and I’ll say for teras senko I didn’t think he was going to be very good he was a good player for Ottawa we’ll see how that goes with own but as far as placement as far as roster you have Jensen now you have a legitimate top four they didn’t have that last year quite simply the situation that you have in goal and will Corp pasalo play well in Boston possibly but there’s nothing in his past that makes him a vzna trophy winner an All-Star goal tender he could be serviceable as a backup you’re much better in goal you’ve got a top four defense you’ve got alignment and as far as Mr Mario if all of a sudden at 2.9 Million you decided he’s your fourth line Center somebody made a major major mistake on bringing him in so I like what they have is it super sexy um maybe not is it functionable is it going to be well coached organized everything else I like where they’re at a little bit better than last year but I’m also not kidding myself would I lock this team in to be a playoff team next year boys no yeah yeah go put the board back up there s suck with the with the lineup TJ here’s why this team’s going to be better good teams are deep down the middle so this team gets automatically better because your guys down the down the middle have another year under their belt it it’s it’s so important for centerman to have some experience and this is still a really raw group down the middle but switz’s now he’s coming up to around 300 games so around the 300 game Mark you’ve kind of got the lay of the land in the NHL you know what to expect you’ve pretty well been to every rink in the league not too much is going to surprise you now so automatically Tim stz should come back this year be wiser for the lessons he’s learned on how to play on the defensive side of the puck like they started using him on the PK and he did a pretty good job so he should be great summer of training stronger bigger wiser and for me wiser is the key thing there he is Uber talented we all know that but he should come back a wiser player this year because of the experience uh learning some things under jacqu and how to play the right way and having Pinto for a full year guys we saw when he came back into the lineup how much that help Ridley Greg he’s going to be wiser so I think they naturally get better by a little bit of experience they gained last year and they took a lot of Hard Knocks right simmer so when you when you gotta continually get beaten down and lose it makes you better it should make you better because you don’t want to do that anymore and Jensen’s gonna help slotting of the D I think clevin plays this year he’s gonna help and I don’t I don’t think Steve stalos is done yet either fellas I think there’s some more coming down the pipeline to help out that bottom six yeah and as far as Pinto in the two slot it’ll be interesting guys because in some ways on the two-year deal Wally he’s kind of linked to Norris in that is he in the two spot getting the ice and at the same time if Norris is healthy could he play on the wing help him along so no there’s a lot of internal growth there are some positives I’m a little worried about clevin and I did also mention I think York you can appreciate this it’ll be easier for him to play in the NHL and I thought he was fine two years ago when he came out of school I’m a little concerned about the partner I hope it works for jbd I hope he gets A Little Bit Stronger because everything else is there to be a good player and a good partner for him that’s a bit of a concern filling out the rest of the roster but what you also have and one of the most frustrating things we had Peter bond in Washington who was a 500 goal scorer nobody wanted to play with him Adam Oz is the most intelligent hockey player I’ve ever seen did not want to touch him because he was unpredictable that’s what Matthew Joseph is as I go through the lineup it’s predictable it’s smart you have a group that is slotted properly that’s in the right spots and as far as Timmy studa well a guy like that should be able to do anything you ask for him to do he’s a world- class Talent a smart hockey player and as you kind of go across the board boys it’s a group that’s full of hockey sense including our good friend friend of the show Mr Jensen yeah and look like so so what just the thing on yeah jbd summer he needs to get stronger on his stick he needs a huge summer what’s that just one uh Nick Jensen’s gonna join us shortly if you’re just tuning in number two okay is uh I have a tweet last night that someone and I wanted to I meant to get this in before so you guys can talk about it but here’s someone wanted to know I S fan 56 Next program can you talk about the remaining holes for the S can you see someone like van rdik to finish off their forward group for next year what do you think what the third pairing will look like and so uh I wanted to get to that third pairing and I know you just started on jbd so I’ll let you finish your but I think I can see and I know this is gonna sound crazy I can see Travis hamik being there opening night uh potentially potentially like I for there’s something to me they’re not done with with the defense I I could see another another move coming up there um yeah but just think last year there were times last year when HCK had to play in the top four like that’s that’s like you look at why this team and he is he’s a 67 come in and out the lineup and play limited minutes there were times last year he was playing close to 20 minutes and that’s just not not where he’s at in his career right now but um yeah I I don’t think they’re done I I think there’s going to be a few more things done they got they got pin on a real nice contract the other nice thing about Pinto you’re kind of talking about him uh he’s heading off to skate with the big boys and a for a couple years that that is gonna open his eyes up he’s gonna go skate with Crosby and McKinnon and marshan for a couple weeks right before Camp that’s going to be a nice little turbo boost to come in on a little high for camp and um you know just see how those guys work right so I I think he can do it I think I think he’s going to be able to handle that number two uh role at Center he’s just he’s such a smart cerebral player um and having him for the full season automatically makes these guys better yeah he’s a lot like Dave pin when py played in the prime of his career in Philly great athlete I love the fact that he’s taken the time to go up and and skate with pinto now as far as the D and I’ll go back to G Branson’s situation when he went from here not being able to play to Calgary who played properly well he parlay that into a huge contract I don’t know if they can insulate hamic I don’t know I would have bought him out I would have probably kept branstrom to play with clevin we’ll see how that works out now as far as jvr where he fits in nicely because he soft his church music so if you’re doing a choir and you wanted to throw him into that that would be a possibility um but beyond that I don’t see him as a fit is he back row with the back row with the the big he’s very tall so you have to you don’t want him blocking the rest of your church like we we traded for him in my lease days he was traded for Thomas Caba and then Caba Nicks the trade what a talented hockey player but he is the last person that you want to be round in your Hockey Club out with I don’t I don’t mean to be negative I hope the analogy works out well and I don’t mind people that go to church either I just want to make that clear yeah I think I think like if if you’re looking for guys to come in to to fill out your roster I think he wants some I think he wants some speed and some tenacity yeah what about shs the one thing I’ll say about and and people are a little I love the r dog there you go yeah I I he tracked so well last year and for cheap guys Wally if you can build around that mchan unfortunately just has not brought a whole lot to the table uh offup Chuck do you want more time possibly I guess in a perfect world you would ask hey is realistic where he is at that you’re going to have stoa to Pinto who’s 24 but still very young to Greg to a of truck down the middle on paper I don’t mind it I think they want a little bit more experience and like I said I I got no problem with SH man you look around the league too hey like is there any guys like a Casey cus type player that comes in cheap that just wins draws plays hard like that would be the ideal type of player he could come in to to fill that role yeah shre Rook rook’s never gonna hurt you like there was a reason jacqu had this guy taken all the dzone faceoffs when he had other options and had him on the penalty kill because he the guy plays percentage hockey your job of your fourth Line’s not to get scored on go out for 30 seconds and create a little buzz and that’s what the r d Ro dog did so I got no problem with that but I something tells me he it’s it’s going to be tough to see him back but yeah I’m with you on jvr I don’t like the foot speed I saw another uh somebody was tweeting out too that possibly looking at chaten Kirk for your bottom seven8 I’m like oh boy for me not the right fit not not the right fit I I don’t want another offensive guy that’s that’s basically a second power play guy that’s has G to have a tough time in his own Zone yeah I watched him back in school what a hockey player and to the fit and also it would feel like and they overpaid Ron hany just to get him to come in the case of shaton Kirk unfortunately I get a bit of that vibe that that would not be a fit as well no no what’s up and there’s someone to watch we don’t talk a lot about uh in and I don’t know if I brought it up before in Belleville um met and Paulo actually played with Tyler cevin there two big trees on that blue line he I wouldn’t be shocked if he saw a little bit more time here this coming season yeah resign him he’s like 6’4 six he’s big boy yeah and they’re both like they both just look like Twin Towers on that blue line would now could you have them as a third pairing I don’t I don’t know but just be tough tough it would be interesting to see anyway uh let’s take care of some business because I I know Nick is uh coming up shortly here also I want to get into uh Matthew Joseph but this show proudly presented by betway bet your way with betway go to betway.com that way and Bei if you want to spruce up that driveway get some good curb appeal going bii can help you with all those things they also do driveway paving Aggregate and top soil sales bii also has equipment rentals for you give them a call for all your needs 613 432 1120 or you can hit them up on the web at visher Excavating tocom Bei helping to shape the Ottawa Valley remember to slow down in those construction zones uh Matthew Joseph uh so Yorkie the other day what uh two days ago you and I were just on the phone chatting with the show blabbing away you’re like you’re like well Shane Pinto he’s got to get two years and it’s got to be a three and a five and I’m like all right whatever and then you said well they’re gonna have to trade Matthew Joseph today and blah blah blah and all of that happened as soon as we get off the phone so you we played a game of processes elimination we went through the roster on the phone we’re like he’s getting traded like there’s it’s it is what it is um there’s really no other move you could have done because you’re not if you if you go down the roster it’s like yeah it’s it’s got to be him and I think the situation turned out that way too because he didn’t have a good end of the year and just you just kept hearing stuff out of Ottawa last year they wanted to change how this team went about their business and I don’t know Matthew Joseph off the ice I heard he’s a great guy lots of fun lots of speed I do love his speed man that’s the one thing they are going to miss but this team unfortunately when you lose in this league you got to change you got to clean house when you’ve lost this long you’ve got to change the personality you’ve got to change how everything is that’s why D Bron’s coming in like I’m not sure how it’s going to work but this is the one thing I heard I had a good chat with jacqu Marte a couple months ago he’s like this team needs to be more professional he goes there needs to be more guys at like clo jaru in the room and clo jaru needs some help in that department that’s why they brought in David Peron it’s another older guy that hates losing like you don’t there’s actually some guys when you lose it’s not that they like losing but they’re not angry and and I don’t know if Joseph was that type of guy but you need guys that hate losing so and and guys that are going to hold guys accountable and you got to change like because like it or not see we’ve all heard this before losing becomes a habit and the worst thing when you start accepting losing that’s when you know you’re in trouble and now that’s why you’re seeing these sweeping changes you have to break the habit of losing how do you do that it’s like a total house cleaning with all the parts you can do and that’s why Matthew Joseph like he was just part of the old bring in the new and it’s nothing against a player it’s just it has to be done because you have to change the personality of the team just changes sorry simmer go ahead as we’re just going to throw the board up from no I’m just going to say the the inconsistency of his play and he came over played really well earned the contract and if the speed isn’t there CU he doesn’t think the game very well it was a struggle and let’s also guys and I think we’re in a vacuum sometimes because we’re close to Ottawa and we’re talking about every year you are entering the territory that the eont ‘s entered for a long time the Chicago Blackhawks the Pittsburgh Penguins prid it’s seven years without the playoff there is nobody on your roster that was brought through here that has any idea about winning forget about meaningful hockey games nobody has even sniffed or come close to a playoff run and as far as Pon talked to people in St Louis they mentioned Alexander Steen exactly that he’s also a guy that only played one year in the queue at 18 went right into the National Hockey League so yeah this group came in they took their time to methodically assess and everyone always thinks it’s just about the evaluation on the ice obviously Dave Pullin and this is one thing and I’m sure well Steve stos was like that as a player guys but Dave ping came from the Philadelphia old school culture talk about locker rooms talk about settings moving guys around remember having this conversation with Glenn Anderson years ago where you just talk about how the locker room fits where everybody sits and we don’t see that but I thought this group came in and that’s where I respect when you have a guy like pul of they’ve methodically made changes here and nobody’s a bad person it just doesn’t fit and that’s something as a fan you have to look and understand the some of the parts and what your room is all about could be night and day along with a fresh coaching staff 100% uh someone just brought up Tyler Johnson for the third and fourth line I just don’t know that he would come for very cheap since he made five million dollar last year um and interesting to note by the way that opening night roster because of the Norris injury uh and I think because of I think it was Pinto also as an RFA they could only dress 17 skater Zach mchan had to be a healthy scratch in that game um just because of cap management issues look look at this roster for opening night he like the guys wondering when they call the power play kachak power play guy stit power play guy jiru power play guy bson kubik like kubik was a guy that scored people forget he got 30 goals in the league all one te’s playing the power play another oh teraso is a PowerPlay guy too like let’s let’s just load the roster with power play guys and don’t worry about five on five ever you know make the other team play hard well if you asked me about Claude Drew when he came over I would have said you get him for your power play be thankful that he came home he was willing to look the other way his first year and a half of not being on the power play so you’re absolutely right letting guys figure out where they slot in having it properly done of yeah as I said and and you go through rosters and there’s times guys I’ll say Wally like you’ll pull up the Florida Panther’s roster and I know they just won the Stanley Cup but go through the whole roster the 12 forwards the six defenseman you’re not oooing and nwing I mean a couple years ago when forsling came in and all of a sudden he’s on your top pairing you weren’t saying this guy’s going to lead us to the promised land um you know Lumbard there are a lot of players on that roster you know it’s not all allstars it’s just about glue it’s about fixing it and give Bill Zito credit for switching out kachuck for hubero making the coaching changes and that’s where kind of where otta was at not saying they’re going to win the cup but they made the necessary changes just watching I bet you people were shocked watching like the Casual fan the casual ual s fan that watches the SS all the time and then you watched a Boston Bruins playoff game last year you’re like who are these guys I’ve never heard a half this team and they’ve got guys coming in and out of the lineup because they play the right way it’s like next lineup play the right way play the play winning play high percentage hockey no stars on that team like it was there was a lot of guys like you’re just like who is that guy where’d that guy come from playoff but they’re a playoff team yeah thank God for Hockey DB and it’s established long ago and it’s not just about Bute not just about Monty it’s about Claude Julian it’s about Zano charara passing that along with Charlie McAvoy and you mentioned s rce they lost bersan and Cree now Pastor Nick is back and maran’s back but let’s also agree marshan especially towards the end of the season guys is kind of a shell of himself but they’ve got that layer they’ve got the piece in place the goal tending was certainly huge that’s one thing I won’t pull away from you know Swan is a top five and UL Mark is a vzna trophy winner Wally that is a lot and even when you look at shurkin you look at varlamov that first year Patrick W they made up for a lot of the mistakes that the Boston Broods made last year are we going to secretly cheer for the Colorado Avalanche now that uh Parker Kelly and Eric branstrom along with Calvin Dean are all going to be in the Avalanche yeah I was uh I was joking with a couple guys I know that in the league right now like man I can’t wait to get on the ice when they got Branny and Gerard as a shut down pair together yeah yeah I shouldn’t have brought this up damn it yeah no it’s a strange it’s a strange move and I and I brought it up and and you I think everyone all these players they wish them well but in the case of Colorado they won the cup because Gerard got hurt that actually helped them I got to be honest with you guys and I don’t think a lot of people know this I’m cheering for Utah as one of my favorite players and you know how much I love Russian history eigor sakov and that’s with an E not an i for you people out there yeah yeah Utah Utah is going to be a Utah is going to be a destination place in the NHL just watch everyone’s going to want to go there it’s beautiful there ah it is by the way eigor soff getting married tomorrow so we do wish him all the best um and we but uh no more chatter gentlemen further Ado we’re bringing in as Jason York is the president of the right shot D club and the Ottawa Senators right shot defenseman Club Nick Jensen welcome to the show and welcome to the club hey Nick how you doing yeah thanks for having me I’m uh I’m roaming around trying to get service here I I called you in the middle of the drive but I think uh after some teal technical difficulties we found some found a good spot here so you you just got off the ice neck or you working out this morning oh yeah ear early yeah the early gym day today just uh with the Fourth of July celebrating trying to get it all done in the morning here so ni do you have big plans for the Fourth of July uh we’re gonna we were GNA try to hit some parades up but as you guys can see the weather is not uh it’s not it’s not parade weather but we might we might bear through it we’ll see you know the kids will do anything for candy so as long as they still chucking candy out of the car I think we’ll do it it never rains in Ottawa by the way Nick so you’ll be happy perfect we’ll get up there as soon as possible then yeah except for the last month it rained every day well won’t be anything new I think we’re getting record rain here in Minnesota so it’s rain about every other dayra crazy uh so last year at the beginning of the year we actually sought out a we targeted a right shot D that we felt could help the auto his organization and Jason York picked you at the top of the list so Nick I would like to know I know this is a tough question what do you bring to the organization uh yeah I mean it can be a tough question I think it’s it’s pretty simple for me I feel like just because I I do try to play a simple game um if anyone’s watch me but I mean two biggest things for me are you know work ethic I think just I think every player you know has a daily choice to come to the rink some some days you play games you know you’re you’re passing your stick handling your hockey Ikea the way you see the ice it can come and go at times from my experience but the one thing you can kind of do consciously day in and day out is is bring your work ethic to the maximum level that it can be at so I think that’s one biggest thing for me that’s always gotten me through uh the highs and lows of this league um that work ethic and then competitiveness um those are kind of the two biggest things that that I would say I’d bring you can ask my wife I think we’re both pretty similar but we always joke about back in the the day how we almost broke up over a game of CRI cribbage when I I beat her she’ll she’ll tell you I cheated but you know that kind of that kind of brings out you know what kind of competitive people we are but in all in all good fun though but those are the two biggest things that I think I bring Nick you’re I I heard your wife’s a pretty good athlete she was she a b was she a basketball player yeah yeah so played basketball uh was an All-American in high school played in uh College as well and then you know eventually diverted her career she’s now now a physician assistant so she went to grad school and everything so she kept that competitive nature kind of going outside of basketball but yeah she’s uh she was a good basketball player back in the day probably still another competitive competitive thing is the uh Three-Point Contest make sure I don’t bring that up between me and her so getting her on the show next week is what we’re doing you might need you to defend herself I love it Nick I i’ I follow I I looked back in your career because you I’m going to say this you remind me a lot of myself when I played you spent some time in the ERS you’re right shot the I watch you skate you’re great skater um but you spent some time in Detroit with some pretty good pretty good defenseman early on in your career Doug Huda was my defense coach in Boston what a great guy hoods is I I saw you play I saw you played under hoods such a smart guy and chileos was there as well so early on in your career man you you you you played under some pretty smart defense coaches yeah yeah absolutely I was uh I got some good exposure with those guys um chy was even there he was like helping with the player development in in Grand Rapids too all the time so I was he was down there working with us all the time um like you said Hood’s like I love hoods um probably wouldn’t be here today if it weren’t for him um just the how he developed me and how he like the playing time he gave me and everything so um that and then obviously the guys the the veterans that were on Detroit at the time like crown and all those guys um kind of playing under them and watching them um lead the team um you learn a lot kind of from their leadership and just subconsciously watching them on and off the ice so I’ve got to learn from some some pretty talented and hardworking D over the years that that’s really helped me I’ve always felt Minnesota is basically part of Canada and when you mentioned cribbage for sure it is Nick uh thoughts on coming to Canada and just thoughts on the trade do you have any Whispers or any thoughts that this might come be coming down the pipe uh no I I really you know I I tend to stay away from kind of all the chatter in the hockey world especially around times of you know trade deadlines and July 1st and all that stuff um so I wasn’t I wasn’t expecting anything I’ve never you know it’s at the end of the day is it is the nature of the business and so when it happens it’s still a shock but um once you process it you you just kind of know that’s kind of that’s kind of what happened in this league but um you know it was it was shocking obviously the biggest part to me was the uh you know all the relationships you develop over the years especially playing 5 years in an organization you develop some pretty tight-knit relationships on and off the ice um me and my wife obviously and like the kids as well so that’s probably the the hardest thing to go through during it um and there’s obviously a transitioning period with when you have all this family you have a house in DC you have your house in Minnesota you got to figure out what you’re going to do with all your stuff in DC you know me and my wife are hosting a a charity golf outing in DC that we were going to do in August like we have all this stuff that we got to plan and figure out and how we’re going to get the kids to Canada get their passports we have another kid we now we deliver yeah it’s all this you know all the housekeeping stuff we got to take care of but uh you know down further down the scope um you know we we see an opportunity here like we get to go to a city that I’ve heard really good things about um the fan base the passion that they have and then a team that not just from what I hear you know young talented team that I think can be competitive but just playing against them too like there’s times I’ve played against the AO Senators I’m like these guys like when I play them they were good and that’s an exciting thing to to see going to a team that can be competitive down the run a passionate fan base and uh in an awesome city so we see an opportunity past all the all the noise right now we see a really exciting opportunity for for me and my family hey Nick one of the sorry just one one thing Wally one of the things everybody’s been talking about here and I’m sure you’re familiar with the D here you got Jake serson who’s a really good upand cominging young defenseman left shot and and Thomas Shabbat we’ve been talking forever that that this team needs a good reliable defenseman that just goes out and does his job like you that’s why when we were talking about you last year you seem like the perfect fit the way you skate um I you’re to me you’re a young 33 too I know you’re a guy that takes tremendous care and and how he works out off the ice but you just like if you take a look at the r you see some good fits for you on that back end yeah yeah I do absolutely and I’m not I know there’s guys some guys that like to analyze the league and every players and I do know you know like those those names and everything and they’re extremely extremely talented and you know I kind of see it as you know my job is when when I play with guys like that is I go out there and compete with them but like my job a lot of the time to get guys like that the puck you know so that’s kind of what I see in guys like that I give them the puck I let them do their thing and you know I think that is kind of the dynamic that I see on the back end for my for myself and my role so it’s a yeah it’s definitely exciting to be able to play with players like that well we’re just showing some highlights of you like you’ve got some great an by the way you did have your very first ever two assist game against the Ottawa Senators in your career I just wanted to point that out also your second game you got a point was against the Ottawa Senators well I’m glad I can come back there and uh hopefully I can do it for them now here’s here’s a trivia question for you because you played with Alex oetkin obviously arguably the greatest goal scorer in history 853 goals Nick how many of those goals did you assist on boy uh honestly I don’t not I honestly I don’t think a lot but probably I’ll be conservative I would say under five probably four if that is correct it’s four four no all secondary assists but yes four goal and by by the way your first one with him no sorry your your last one first one sorry was his 700th career goal yeah yeah I remember being part of that that was that was that was a good one that was one of the ones I was counting in my head so yeah Nick do you think he play do you think he plays until he breaks the record or do you think he’ll break the record meaning oie uh yes yes and yes you know I mean he he like obviously you can see what he everyone it was kind of uh everyone was kind of getting a little scared a little bit there at the beginning of the year last year but you can see when he like when he turns it on it’s just like it’s like a flood you know it just happens and he’s been doing that his whole career it’s not it’s not an outlier um so it wouldn’t it it would be no surprise to me I think the way he plays The Game and his ability to score and see the ice and put the puck in the back and that there’s no doubt in my mind that he will and uh I know he’s motivated to do it and and he has ability obviously so um I definitely believe he can I tried to go through your Hockey DB I don’t know if you have any relationships with players in Ottawa you may um who also aside from that who’s reached out to you to have chats uh in the organization yes even you go with players if you want yeah players yeah I mean I from the get yeah everyone’s been super welcoming um been reached out by you know obviously Steve St reached out right away um Travis screen reached out right after that and then uh and then obviously Brady jaru I just got a text from Shabbat um they all were reaching out hamik another guy um all the stren you know the strength trainer there the head athletic trainer and I’m I still got to get good with name so I’m ring off my head make sure that’s probably Robbie yeah yeah and uh athletic trainer you know they’re already sending me gear they reached out right away to make sure I’m I’m getting in the right gear while I’m Skating here in the summer so everyone’s been super welcoming and it’s really it’s very reassuring um obviously it can be scary going to a new team and but when everyone kind of reaches out and kind of takes you under their wing like that it’s it’s uh it’s very welcoming and very reassuring that you’re uh that you’re wanted there and you’re welcomed so that was good do you know anything about Ottawa honestly I I the unfortunate thing is that every time we we I used to come and play in Ottawa is that we kind of stay at a hotel not in the city and all I always hear is otta is like a great City like in in the right parts but we stay in kind of a like a kind of a desolate area not much going around so I don’t really get feel for yes I don’t really get the real feel of the city so my perception of it isn’t I I just have no judgment of it right now just because I’ve never really been you know so I my recollection of is I go there and I stay in the the hotel that doesn’t really have much around it and I go to the rink and play and then we leave so I’m to actually experience a city and and the things around it and you know the guys that have reached out said it’s a you know it’s a great City and great for kids and everything so um and I I’ve I’ve bared a few uh snowy Winters my myself in Minnesota so it’s no stranger to me as well so um that won’t bother me so I’m looking forward to it though Nick two kids you have two kids two kids one on the way yeah two boys one more boy on the way so oh congrat my wife’s my wife’s going to be in one for sure oh boy when’s the due date uh it’s September 21st is it uh is the due date but well somewhere SE 1 sorry Yorkie has uh this is the time of the show where we tell you York’s house is for sale it’s very nice it’s in a really nice neighborhood we can get you hooked up right away a sweetheart deal yeah no commissions we’ll talk after the show don’t worry about the uh transition from the Canadian he’ll do the math for you Nick Nick I’ve been I’ve been to St Paul and mini I’m going to say Ottawa is a lot more like St Paul so you’re going to absolutely love it when you look at that uh Captain wise you came in obviously Obie was very established do you now look at yourself as well uh the opportunity to come in and support and not Mentor um but certainly support a guy like Brady kachuck who’s a young captain and lots on his plate yeah yeah I mean I I would I would definitely try to like my what I’ve learned over the years and Leadership wise like it the leadership role that I play is usually a lead by example type of thing that’s where I kind of talk about the work ethic and everything so and on and off ice training so that’s kind of my area of expertise but I mean I and obviously I I I’ll get get to know all the guys on the team but just just seeing Brady on the ice you know the guy he’s he’s an animal out there and he brings a lot of passion to the game just from what I’ve seen playing against them and it’s it’s not fun to play against I’ll tell you that but it’s I’m I’m looking forward to watch him um and and grow as a leader on on on his team um like I said he he from what I see he’s just like he’s Fearless which is some a a character that a leader absolutely needs and that’s what I see the most in him so that’s it’s the passion and the fearlessness that he brings to the game and he’s super young and he’s already grown that much at this young of age and he’s got so much more ahead of him so that’s exciting to kind of see for our team and and the future for for him as well Nick there’s one I just want to ask you about I’ll call it the incident near the end of the season which effectively ended your year because you didn’t get back into the lineup although I think you were cleared to play the last game of the season possibly against the Rangers game four um so for those who don’t know you get hit by uh iont against Tampa you end up being stretchered off but you walked out of the Arena that night so I just want to make this very clear but just what was that like to go through for you um yeah I think it was it was a lot scarier for everyone from the outside looking in you know my recollection is I I got hit and then I woke up probably 5 seconds later I think I was out for a little bit but I was like I’m just I’m I’m just going to get up cuz like that’s what you do after a hit I’m going to go get off the I’m just going to get up get on the bench and just kind of recruit and uh you know my TR it was right by the bench so my trainer was immediately on the ice it was it was like a 4 foot walk for him so he was like no no no no stay down stay down so if it was across the ice I probably would have gotten up and tried skating to the bench whether or not I’d be um falling all over the place I don’t really know I never had really a chance to get up so I was going to get up but they were like stay down and then no no one off the ice really saw like the doctors anything like so don’t move they’re OB automatic precaution is stabilize the neck just just precautions why so like that’s why they bring the stretcher out um so obviously it was a lot harder for everyone watching outside of it you know my wife obviously not great but um saw her right after and was able to walk out and you know it was all it was all fine obviously still a traumatic injury to the head but um not as bad as it peered on the ice I would say you’ve been uh you’ve been relatively healthy your whole career though like you’re usually a guy that plays the majority of the games you take great care of yourself but you’re just over 500 games in the league I believe hey Nick yeah yep I’m not even sure 5 525 I’m not really sure 562 2 I just got the number I was just gonna say that uh what do you know so we have you penciled in because we’re coaching the Ottawa Senators if you didn’t know uh we have you penciled in to play alongside Thomas Shabbat what do you know if much about perhaps his game um yeah well perhaps just by saying I just um I don’t really look into where I’m going to play like I said I’m just kind of a player I like I put my head down and work metaphorically obviously I’m not going to put my literal head down on the ice and not see the ice but that’s kind of the mentality I take on the ice and I I do believe you know the hard work gets you to where you belong um so as far as playwise I don’t really know but as far as the players like Shabbat like obviously from what I know extremely skilled sees the ice well great Puck mover and and able to make plays and score goals is what I is what I know about him um just just from what I’ve seen um so like I said before getting guys like that the puck um and letting them play their game is is my main goal usually obviously there’s there’s games within the game that you can still contribute offensively um but that’s kind of an over an overview of what my main goals are for when I when I play and Nick we look at a 32 Team league if you realize as you’ve come along here not only how hard it is to make the playoffs but at the same time it feels like every year we see young teams like Ottawa transition which gives you hope that you’re not going to be suppressed and not going to be down forever yeah yeah it is uh it’s playoffs are a weird thing cuz like when you’re when you’re making them year after year you’re like this is no this is easy just you keep doing this every year that’s kind of what it was like right when I got on the caps and then you miss it when you’re like okay this is a lot harder than I thought doing uh you know playing that whole season and grinding to get a playoff spot like we did this past year and uh but yeah like seeing the potential like I said that that that we have in Ottawa is is exciting because you got young guys and and all you need I I think when you have young guys that that that really kind of break out that’s that’s when you kind of make that transition from uh you know kind of we’re on the cusp of making the playoffs and then a few of those guys have huge years and that’s kind of what you see it’s you know it’s a little different when you have a veteran team where guys are all established and they’re always having big years that’s kind of when when you see the the teams that are making playoffs every year but um I think our team is is really close to that I see the skill that we have and how young we are and the leadership we have um the goal tending I think it’s I think the pieces are there and we just got to put the puzzle together this year will you wear number three and why do you prefer that number I I will uh he reached out he asked I want number three and I said you know it’s gotten me this far I I I may as well keep it going um wasn’t always my number that was kind of the number that was assigned to me when I was in Grand Rapids Detroit and they just kind of gave me that and I’m never I was never one at that time to be a high maintenance player I’m not going to you know go to him like Hey I want to switch my number and stuff like that I was I didn’t want to be that guy at that time and they gave me three and um I was 14 in Grand Rapids I went up to Detroit gave me three and at that time I just I don’t know what my career is going to look like I some guys get called up all the time play a couple games go back down I wasn’t going to come off and be like I I want to switch my number right away like I would I would never do that because those that’s just not the kind of player I am so I’ll say that Nick out of respect to you in Washington when I got drafted in 1986 Scott Stevens wore number three so that rate there is an elite club to end up being you were you used the word potential earlier want to get some thoughts on you were playing for the Green Bay gamblers and your coach was John Cooper did you expect old coops back then did you see the potential in him to become hey one of the the most if not the most respected coach in hockey yeah honestly I I I did like he at the time he had just gone from the na and then he goes to the USHL I think the green the gamblers were the year before I got there which was we so we basically I was the two years he was there was the two years I was there um the year before I got there I think the gamblers were like 12 and 40 something like that was their record like like like not good and uh we G we don’t win it that year but we we did really well made playoffs and then win it the next year and I could just tell by his coaching style and the way he um saw the game and you know and the way our team performed obviously like he was going to be successful and it wasn’t really surprising how quick he was moving up the ranks there um obviously you can never predict how successful you’re going to be but um seeing him at this point I’m not overly surprised to be honest so you Packers or Vikings fan a Vikings fan always I love Green Bay it was it was awesome to play there I did uh and I went to a few Packers games and it was it’s a really cool city to live and everything and look back fondly upon it but uh I can never the Rivalry there and I’ll preface this by saying my day my day doesn’t my week my year doesn’t get ruined when the Vikings lose to the Packers like some minnesotans but um I’m always ring for the Vikings and all the Minnesota teams okay I’ve dug up a couple of things one and I was goingon to get back to uh you’re a big fashion guy I’m told is that correct uh uh I would I would say my interests are not fashion but I would say as a mix of you know I like to be presentable um especially when it comes to suits and stuff you know I don’t just schlock things together um I’d say the other half of that is my wife is very fashionable so it’s kind of it’s kind of a meet in-the-middle thing where I’ll give a little a very dry um kind of look at what I should wear but she’ll she’ll really put like the finishing touches on it um I’ll put the overall looks together but she I would say of the two of us she’s obviously the fashionista um but yeah I mean I I appreciate a good look though it it it says something to me so I’m gonna go back to your wife for a sec because if I read this correctly you guys have been together since you’re five or known each other sorry since you’re five years old is correct uh we we did we grew up in the same town same neighborhood so we always knew each other growing up um um all the way all the way through all the way up through high school and then obviously that’s when we started getting a little closer later in high school so how competitive are you two exactly I I would say extremely competitive especially back in the day um when when there was more leisure time there was a lot more games a lot more competitiveness to be to be had and she’s obviously a competitive person um otherwise that competitive nature wouldn’t be there it’s a it’s to sides of it obviously you can’t be have one competitive person and one that’s not so everything we do there’s a lot of competition there but um at the same time obviously we support each other just as equally so um is she a trash talker uh well she can be yeah she can definitely be I don’t I don’t know if her trash talking skills are are as I think they it could use some work sometimes like I can mentor a little bit but uh it’s it’s similar nature as me just like very very competitive in the fact like I’m not gonna lose type of thing you know uh do you play cards what’s your playing kind of uh experience here what do you do on the plane when traveling I used to play cards um until I you know it started to be where you got on the plane and I had to play like when I didn’t have to want to play cards I had to play cards and I was like you know sometimes I just want to sit there especially if it’s at depending on where we’re at what how the game was how tired I am sometimes I just want to sit on the plane and watch a movie or do something um we had a switch group going a Nintendo switch group going where we play a little Mario Kart in uh in DC there uh there would be some argument of who the number one Mario Kart player was but I I would put myself modestly at the top um Trevor van re would would disagree but um I I think he’s cemented in the two3 spot down there um hopefully so hopefully he’ll see this podcast I’ll make sure to have him tune in he can he can listen to it but uh yeah that’s kind of other than that I just like to either relax and watch I don’t really play cards unless people absolutely need me um guys will guys will play the 13 up 13 down which I know how to play so if they need a spot to fill in like I could but that’s kind of myh travel routine is kind of just relax watch a movie or just sleep have you looked at the schedule and see that you don’t play J Washington I don’t know if it matters until January 6 16th and then you’re not in Washington I think until March March 3rd yeah so no uh if if you haven’t gotten it by now I’m not a guy that’s really looking too far ahead especially in hockey so you could you could probably go during the season and guys will be asking me who we play two games from now I’m not sure I can answer that to be honest um so that’s just that’s just how I approach hockey I don’t I One Day At One game at a time I know who we’re playing next and uh unless some reason I’d be looking ahead but I’m not always looking at the who were playing five days down the road I’m not always looking at the standings it’s just kind of a one day approach for me usually and it’s kind of how I always approached it Nick you’re obviously a big family guy do you feel pretty lucky to have played in Detroit Washington and auttaa in comparison got even in living in mini but seeing out west uh what a different travel travel schedule that could end up being yeah yeah I mean I haven’t really thought about it but I mean you’re absolutely right yeah like having played in the cities I am and I have and I’m extreme I feel extremely fortunate and obviously at the Baseline just being able to play in this league is um enough Fortune for me to be honest uh being able to play this long in the league so I I mean it doesn’t in my eyes doesn’t really matter where I play if you’re playing in this league you’re extremely lucky do you have the same pregame meal uh the day of or the day before oh let’s go day of all right day of yes just because the last five years like we’ve had uh like a meal we have a team meal kind of at the rink so like you have the same stuff pretty much you have on the road so yeah I’d say I have a pretty much the same meal every game sometimes I’ll switch it up if I if I’m really getting sick of what I’m eating and maybe combined with maybe a bad few bad games that’s that’s good warrant to uh to switch it up but mostly uh you same thing what about the day before usually not usually not really I’m not superstitious not strict at all but I like to have similar stuff the the day before similar to the day of just you know like some type of I usually like to have pasta and and like chicken or steak with it um something similar my wife usually does make something she she probably makes a certain dish majority of the time the day before a game just cuz it’s it’s good and that’s what I I usually like to have so lenus Mark puts ketchup on his pasta uh do you do that no absolutely not I I’ve heard I’ve heard of things of that but it’s usually guys who just it’s kind of like someone who just got exposed to ketchup they’re like I had no idea this existed and it’s delicious and like they’re putting on everything it’s kind of like my kids like they’re just everything needs ketchup on it um so it’s a similar similar effect on the guys that have never had ketchup in their life and they come over here and and then they they get a taste of it and they just can’t they can’t help themselves so I have heard of that so it’s not out of the out of the norm but I would I would uh I’d refrain from putting ketchup on on my BOS Stu for sure Wally I have never had C I can’t stand ketchup never had it in my life I don’t get the katchup craze like it’s doesn’t make sense to me you don’t have it with your fries no fries are good as they are it’s a it’s a mayonnaise thing you guys have M oh that’s that’s a much that’s a much that’s more of a French thing the mayonnaise on the fries absolutely and they make the great french fries have you had ptin Nick yeah yeah I have and we I’ve had it in the states and you know Canada I’m sure everyone I’m sure the Canadians are like oh you can’t have it in the states no way it’s not not even close to the same thing so I’ve had in Canada it’s good it’s good it’s not not not what I’m eating every day uh healthwise but uh it’s I think it tastes delicious yeah hey Nick before we before we let you go though the most the most important animportant question of all how do you like your steak medium medium well medium rare what’s your go-to uh I think that depends on uh the quality of steak where I’m eating um if I’m at a really nice really nice I’m top of thee line Steakhouse I’m going medium rare I cook most my steaks medium to be honest just but if I’m getting like top-of-the line Choice like Prime Cut Meat I’m I’m going medium rare Mr Wallace here is medium well Nick’s my guy Med well yeah that’s that’s well that’s that’s like my dad that’s like my dad and all the other dads you know just chewing on a shoe you know taking a quality piece of meat taking a nice nice quality expensive piece of meat and and just ruining it but most of what he cooks is baloney I don’t know if you’re familiar with that so it really doesn’t I do know baloney it’s called newy Stak here in Canada so Nick we appreciate your time enough of our nonsense um thank you for stopping by uh we look forward to seeing you in Ottawa and in a uniform you are uh been highly tout touted here for the city so we’re looking forward to seeing you play thanks Nick I appreciate you having me on thanks guys cheers Nick happy there goes Nick Jensen thank you for stopping by see okay again if you listen to lenus olark and you listen to Nick Jensen there is a tone in their voice and you sense the professionalism that they bring to it that’s all so here’s people wondering what they have gotten I think you got a pretty good idea after listening to Nick Jensen humble wants to do his job doesn’t care about accolades just wants to play play hard keeps himself in tremendous shape Family Man so you see what they’re trying to bring into this dressing room too they’re trying to bring in character guys that are older take care of themselves good examples and fit into a role like it sounds a lot like our old our good friend Mark mathod right what your job my job is my my job is to play defense my job is to move the puck and put me with a really uh talented guy and I am gonna compliment that player that’s why this guy is a really good fit yeah and if you want to go back to that trade guys Nick Felina went on to be an Allstar no one was complaining about Mark and respect that Mark was a defensive defenseman filed the role was perfect and as far as that I think in bigger picture guys you’re looking way down the road they’re asking the young players to settle down and start breeding start looking at some of the players of the future here from an Ottawa perspective and you love how professional a guy and Minnesota if you’ve been there is a part of Canada it very much the mentality the feel he will just like the sweds will absolutely love Ottawa and as far as fashion Wall-E when you first brought that up about Minnesota I was like are we sure about this and then that made a lot of sense the wife pushing because I’m thinking he rocks a Canadian tuxedo and in Minnesota that’s considered to be dressing up so he’s a salt of the earth down earth guy he’ll be a terrific fit here in Ottawa on off the ice and yeah uh obviously probably David peral talking to people in St Louis exactly nobody making up a bunch of BS great sources and when you have these first two couple of guys on you totally recognize from a culture standpoint and and I’ll say this Yorkie as you transitioned in your career doesn’t have to be the whole thing but it is nice when you have a Drew and UL Mark some other players that have young families versus walking into a group that’s a bunch of babies and nobody has kids even from your wife’s standpoint it is huge in your transition when you’re coming to a new team in a new country yeah it’s it it it works both ways the the the older guys get energy from the younger guys and they come to the room and you’re you kind of live vicariously through the younger guys you listen to their stories and then the younger guys see how the older guys lasted this long in the league and what they’re doing and what they’re doing right um and it’s it’s a two-way street and that’s why you know it’s tough a lot of teams don’t know the recipy it takes a while to get it but I would say judging from what ottawa’s done so far that’s why I keep saying it’s a good start it’s a good start you can’t you can’t change things all at once but this is a really good start to an offse of of of of identifying what you need and trying to fill those holes and make this a better team and even transitioning in having the Jensen move into your house and having the child right there with you as the Midwife like what could be more Canadian probably even throwing a passport deal hey whole family gets a passport for the new baby being born in Canada there you go there you go uh anyway yes gentlemen um I just laughed I I just was thinking while I was talking is people were all over stos for not making any moves like when’s he gonna do something you look now that roster is well I don’t know what the number is if you include all the minor league signings but there’s at least nine guys I think off the main roster from opening night that aren’t here anymore like it’s a it’s a a massive overhaul it’s like the s’s Extreme Makeover Edition yeah it’s exactly what it was like you let the season assess like you got the worst thing you could have did is come in here and make all these changes right away and and make some mistakes and who knows you always make mistakes nothing’s going to turn out perfectly but I I I like the approach um methodical a little slower wait um and see and see what you can do so again I I just think these are really wellth thought of moves and not not moves that we’ve seen in the past simmer where everything’s about sexy and big game fishing and all that it’s well yeah and even parisano and I know on a one-year deal coming at 5 million but it blocked Pinto last year and this is difficult and it’s nice when you get your business done now because I don’t know where teras Seno’s heads space was at and he came into Ottawa played very well from what I understand I don’t know if his family was in Florida one thing I’ll say guys and I put a lot into it and Circumstance can be very different for different athletes but when you have young families or players they’re on one-year deals and they come in they don’t bring their family here I’m always a big red flag because if you’re going to come in and not that you have to commit for the rest of your life but if you’re going to be comfortable as a hockey player yorky almost any guy will tell you especially when you have children going back to your family after a game or after a road trip versus an empty room is everything and that brings everybody together and you got a guy for a couple of years here and people have talked about chicken Wally and rumor of a first and a second round pick of the draft okay that player might play in five years you’re transitioning now you’re Protec your investment or hopefully up in your investment in a guy like Shabbat so just on every level these moves that have been made now we’ve heard from Lark we’ve heard from from Jensen you really start to feel that and I’ll go back to culture that you had here in Ottawa as you had a maturing Chris Phillips to Alfie to Neil yor you were part of it people really bought in yeah yeah it just you know there there’s something very different there when people really had a lot of Pride about being an Ottawa Senator and I think all of these moves will help that along Wally you know was told about Ron hany was a great influence in the room I don’t know exactly because I I don’t know what his play on the ice but like there was a lot of guys that were brought in specifically just to try to help younger guys understand the game and I I go back to those guys that they’re just invaluable pieces to have on your lineup I could never get over I could never get over Han’s boot simmer he had the black the black blades and it makes you look way slower like he was slow but it makes you look way slower I’m like get some white blades on there I can’t it’s too it’s funny because I I remember his draft interview he came out of um mol I think the draft was in Boston guys and he was such a clown in a good way but he was such a typical American and as he came along now I will say From ottawa’s perspective he was on about to retire and then he got the call about the money that’s okay but the thing that he did and if you’re talking about Jensen go back to Morgan Riley and certainly Thomas Shabbat is further along uh Mr hanesy came in and was the perfect compliment for Morgan Riley as he was transitioning in in Toronto so sometimes you’re not looking at hey exactly when the game here in Ottawa was different but for for that that was that and I think Jensen will preside that for a guy like Shabbat for sure all right boy oh the one thing I you talk about the money with Ron hany we sat down I think I’ve told this story and uh it’s it’s the very first day of training camp and I sit and go like Ron why did you sign here he goes did you see what they’re paying me and I like a very good point that was one that was one of those ones Yorkie where I think the gear was already in the garage or even on the lawn for a not even for sale it was more of a take it if you want it and then he’s like scurrying back trying to get his gear realizing that somebody gave him a contract but that was a spot that I was in at the time and Matt ker his agent made a nice little chunk of chain off it absolutely all right boys enjoy the golf course today Yorkie uh we are back Monday which I think has another guest there’s should be Thursday is another Whopper of a guest if everything PS out we were going to take the week off but for you loyal listener we are back oh and and I know and I know they’re not a sponsor but there is a video out of Burger King of one of the employees beating up of customer so speaking of Whoppers anyways thought I’d throw that in there if you want to do something to you day yorky um by the way Monday we’re announcing a contest okay I know how big you are on social media and different types of videos so Wally still has to watch the HW Tua video I I I I I broke I broke I broke down last night and had to watch some of it I I had no choice over you wrote me you R me in taking over the country maybe the world there’s like a hug now they’re making hug Tu remixes it’s DJ put your finger on the button oh um we’re gonna we’re gonna have to slow this thing down all right see you on Monday with more cooking tips all right cheers thanks for tuning in to coming in hot if you enjoyed the show hit that like button and be sure to subscribe to never miss an episode [Music] n

Jensen seems like a great guy. I'm really looking forward to seeing how the team looks with all the changes.
Awesome interview. Nick and Linus both seem to be exactly what we need on and off the ice. They bring it all
My dad will be there this afternoon Wally, he’ll say hi
Yorkie I agree with the fit can matter more than the skilled player. But then the fit is 8 years older and won’t be a part of this team when they’re contending in a couple years, then the trade isn’t so even. Washington and other teams will be flipping chychrun for picks for years to come while Jensen is retired.
Simmer subtly and sarcastically going on about JVR being a good spot if we were forming a choir 😂 I’m dead
Shattenkirk isn’t really an offensive d man since the prime days with St Louis. He’s steady and has a good first pass. Would be a good vet partner for Klev imo
How can you not love that guy
Jensen seems like he’ll fit the role perfectly. The roster definitely looks much better. Let’s bury the Dorion memories(nightmares).
I think people forget at the end of the year did anyone think we would ever clean up some of “ Pierre from Orleans “ mess !
Steve did a great job , they won’t make the playoffs but maybe they can be .500 in October maybe
13:43 Is it gonna be better? Well, we’re gonna have 18 skaters dressed on opening night. So I’d say that’s an improvement. 😂
Hey wally, how do you know Jacob and Claude was playing together ⛳️ 🏌️♂️?
Is it like me? I know someone that works at the royal ottawa and other day he saw Alfie, Stoner and Karlsson playing together. 🍻

Nothing like drinking the Kool-Aid after a horrible trade. You don’t have to come up with a sell job or over analyze a trade when it’s good for your team, you just get excited. I’ll leave the delusion to the senschirp fan forum. Hopefully he comes in and is consistent, that’s about all we can hope. Agreed it wasn’t a fit for Chychrun, still a brutal trade.
Jensen seems like a good dude
Simmer absolutely eviscerated JVR 😂
Nick seems like a down-to-Earth kind of guy. Love to see it!
I miss Nick playing in Detroit, what a smooth skater. Good luck in Ottawa.
Happy that they finally got an RD to solidify the top 4. As for Chychrun he was the softest player mentally and physically I have seen in Ottawa in a long time. Paying him
4.5 million to play on the wrong side also didn’t help.
Great Show guys as always!! Keep up the great work and looking forward to the next show.
Really enjoy the show. Good job guys!
I saw that BK fight video too. That customer got force-fed a couple of double whoppers. Not as good as a Wendy’s Dave single, never frozen 🎉
I’ve been to the US ambassadors place for the Kentucky Derby. You’re gonna have a good time Wally.
Notice he says we and us right away like he’s been here all along. Nice!
1:11:01 no way Jason York mentioned hawk tuah 😭
This Jensen wowwww 🙌 i can't wait to see us get better!!! Such a great pro and is focused in all the right ways!!!! Such a great pick up and great job getting him on the pod!!! 🍻 letssss goooo #GoSensGo
I don’t know about you ladies and fellas but I’m way more optimistic about this coming year then the last like 4-5 lol
What a great guy!
Love Simmer on the pod! Guy is damn funny
Hawk tuah
If you guys could ever get Dion Phaneuf on that would be killer!
Locker room presence and attitude of Jensen will be worth more than the scoring Chychrun brought. This was a net positive trade for Ottawa.
i'm sorry but unless we're winning alot of games and guys need a breather, i don't want to see hammonic in this lineup…
great guy but he's wayyyy too slow and a huge liability on the ice
Need to make the playoffs in order to sign Ullmark. The fan base is tired if losing.
Nick seems like a great dude and should fit in well.
Ottawa will be Vancouver from last year.
looks like i have to buy a Jensen rookie card now haha, this guy seems awesome! Great show as always! Thanks! 🎉🎉🎉
Welcome to the team…if u where to live anywhere….go manotick or outside kanata…carleton place or almonte..
Wow. Jensen sounds perfect. This trade looks brilliant.
No disrespect to Meth or Bobby but I'm glad Wally has finally found the perfect trip for this pod.
