[Music] [Music] hello and welcome along to the VM TV rugby pod Alan quinland and Matt Williams alongside me reacting to the first test to fate for Ireland against Sou AFA in Petoria yesterday we’ll get into the nitty-gritty in a moment Al but overall is an assessment 20 points 27 points to 20 a fair result in the end yeah I think South Africa were were probably the stronger side um Ireland made mistakes uh turned the ball over a couple of times and couldn’t really get their attack going the way that we’ve seen in the you know in their success in the last couple of Seasons so uh I knew and I’m sure Matt knew as well that there was going to be massive pressure here continuously from from South Africa and uh but I thought Ireland stood up well I thought it stood up well in from a physical point of view and um just a few tweaks and a few mistakes and maybe just a little bit off the pace early in the game which which was um uh frustrating a little bit but um and I I suppose territorially just they didn’t kind of turn weren’t able to turn the screw from a territorial position um against South Africa but look it’s a really difficult place to go and uh they were they were certainly up for it but to lose by seven um isn’t a bad bad return I think um you know Pard missed a couple of kicks um I think one of them was very kickable Jack Crowley that probably evens itself out because Jack Crowley’s one was you know an easy kick as well but um yeah I think it was probably Ireland came came a bit more alive towards the end of the game which was disappointing so it’s something they they like they’ve got to learn from it a couple of decisions went their way went against him I should say but you know overall I think um you know if you’re taking any positives out of it I think Garland stood up well and and um a lot of aspects of our game that we were worried about were good but just a nitty-gritty little technical points and I think Matt will probably allude to them as well just the skills the execution and getting their attack on was probably the disappointing part Matt I know you’re watching the wab live against Wales good day and a good result but you managed to watch the game back South Africa started off pretty hot and A lot’s been talked about Tony Brown coming in and you can see that impact the old wide wide pattern was pretty effective wasn’t it inside three minutes they score a crack and track absolutely it’s true what how refreshing is it to see this incredibly talented South African team and especially The Talented backline passing the ball and looking to play expensive rugby I I really um shock’s not the right word I’d say I’m I’m delighted with what the South Africans did because they play really positively and and we we need the South Africans to play a positive style of rugby because they’re the world champions that’s that sets the tone for the rest of the planet and I I I think Tony Brown’s influence on that side is to be hugely commended and I I South Africa deserves to win but here’s a positive for irand I think that’s the worst Irish performance I’ve seen in many years and they only lost to the world champions had altitude by would you go as strong as that M do you really believe that worse than many years oh yeah yeah definitely I thought our back three were poor we didn’t contest balls like we didn’t contest kicks that you the two South African Wingers are spers but they they they’re short men they contested every kick and we contested hardly any but we did not to contest hard we already caught any that were kicked to us James L one late in the game we were letting balls bounce we’re letting them get it I thought our back it’s I think it’s the worst performance I’ve seen from our back three in many many years and and but we still were the big this is the plus I’m not trying to pull Island down I’m trying to say as poor as they played and the poor decisions they made and they and Jack Miss some kicks if he kicks those kicks they win the game I know Onre poad is some absolutely uncharacteristic kicks but the point is all those opportunities and as poor as they played they still could have won that game and they look at and there were some tough decisions you know for mine and and let me not I’m not criticizing the tmas because they split second was James L’s foot down I thought it was did did uh was the ball just touchdown on that that try did it touch the white line I thought it deserved some more review before saying no but South Africa with a better team so what I’m saying as poor as isand played and the bad and the tough decisions that went against them or the 50/50s they didn’t get they can go down to down to uh natal in the Shark Park and think we can really win this and they can but there were there were certainly negatives about the Irish play negatives about their lineup negative what they were doing they still were in touch with the world champions at altitude and I I think they can take a huge amount out of that Allan Andy farl was straight out saying we were off in the first half and South Africa fully deserved the win but underneath he’ll feel there was a lot of opportunities missed won’t he and that’s what they’ll be working ahead of next Saturday yeah I think so I think um I think they looked a little bit compressed in defense early on and um you know South Africa’s attack was superb their execution that that’s you know attack isn’t about uh and correct me if I’m wrong I probably said this multiple times in the last number of years attack isn’t about just uh going off a scrum and passing passing passing to your Winger and and and having width in your game um good attack involves all the team you know lines are running short passes forwards being able to link pull those passes back it’s all that cohesion and shape that um that makes your whole attack structure really good um I think South Africa we going Wing to Wi a few times and Ireland were compressed a little bit and and you know maybe they were a little bit expecting those hard kind of loose forwards to carry tight when we saw kisi and Peter step the toy in the wider channels making inroads um so yes uh the bad news for everybody else is uh in the world is if South Africa’s attack um and that’s a little bit of a sign yesterday if that if they get that into their locker as regards another way they can play s you know uh uh with structure um you know they can they can take their game to the next level because we know how good their fundamentals are their scrum their line out their physical presence their breakdown all that kind of stuff is is up there and always has been very powerful and dominant um and you know they have two wonderful Wingers who were so quick and a lot of their tries in the last couple of years um and I mean disrespectfully have come off maybe winning a contestable ball ball and the opposition defense being disjointed and then putting it through the hands and you know Colby or arens or mimpi who’s there making making inroads um but you know the shape they had yesterday was was really impressive and they got their timing right A lot of the times I know Rie rasma spoke afterwards about you know things need to be better for them as well but that’s the same as in any match that you play coaches will will you know that’s why you analyze it but um yeah you could see Tony Brown there and it’s not a surprise in a sense that because that’s that’s what he’s renowned for you know when he coached Japan their attack their short passing their lines are running were superb that’s the only way Japan could play really and stre stretch teams and they did that for under Tony Brown brilliantly they scored a lot of brilliant tries um so yeah very impressive from South Africa uh in from an attack point of view but I think Andy far is going is speaking afterwards uh about going through the proper channels there was certainly a lot of stuff in the game that he’d be disappointed with I thought Luke Pierce was uh know the South African uh South Africans won’t agree um you know again the South African fans I was having a look last night and a lot of them think that Ireland were you know offside and infringing at breakdowns and all that stuff both sides keep saying all that but I think there was certainly a feel for me that Luke par Luke Pierce was was hard in Ireland a few times I was really I know there’s a couple of big points that James LW W in touch and the TMO in his defense there I think the TMO is looking for another angle is that right hand from James law still on the ball when the foot foot ball touches when his foot touches the ground we didn’t get the angle there um I think the Ron kellerer won he has no idea where he’s where the ball is as regards it’s and we’ve seen that a lot Paul shooting out of out out of Rooks letter to law you could probably say yes the Irish player um hooks the ball and he’s gone he’s on the ground knee on the ground whatever but I don’t think Ron and Keller can actually see because vly laru has his left arm around his neck and there’s a neck roll so if they disallow the try I think it should be a penalty to Ireland for the neck roll on on on Ronan Keller 100% blat and forward pass in the second half from vly Laro was about two or three yards forward right where the linesman was referee was close to it not called um you know so there’s there’s there was a couple of things there that he’ll be frustrated about and look I’m sure Ria look at the game as well and say well there’s a couple of things here that we’re going to send in to to to the referees to get get um judgments on um I don’t think we’ll see any big videos uh this time um they’ll be really pleased but I think anyy farell I just sensed that he was frustrated there and I was really did the one thing you know that stuff happens and fair fair enough but and you send in your clips and you get you get footage on it there was a Jesse creel clean out and Jack Crowley where he went about two yards beyond the ball in the second half tackled him around the legs and again it’s right in front of the referee so there was a fair bit of tackling beyond the ball that wasn’t picked up at all by Luke Pierce so it was a bit of a carnage show at the breakdown at times but funnny enough Ireland did really well because they won eight turnovers and they they actually you know they put a lot of pressure and a once or twice there very surprisingly and this is what South Africa look at you know BND Yaki picks one up um I know he got penalized for one but I think K and darus got about two where there’s maybe one South African player in with a supporting player brilliant counter Rook there in the first half from Jack Crowley uh when South Africa looked like they were going to get a uh you know get away and possibly score but the biggest disappointment for me is the way Luke Pierce was speaking to kand Doris he is the captain um he’s asking questions obviously we can’t hear what Kay and Doris is saying um but he was very very uh impatient with Kay and Doris which I I was disappointed with now okay Luke Pierce could come out and say that maybe he’s asking questions every time maybe they’re the same questions maybe he’s repeating them too much whatever the case may be but I thought he should have been a bit Cammer there and uh you know kayin darus as a captain at that stage whereas I saw Luke Pierce a lot in the game and he was uh you know chatting to obviously very respectfully to C kisi which he’s entitled to do and Peter am Mani when he was on but Peter step to toy took off to the captaincy then and uh he was chatting a lot with Luke Pierce and there wasn’t so I’d love to know what happened there and what was going on um and he was just quite impatient with with dorus which is disappointing because he’s entitled to ask questions he is the captain Matt just before we get into those incidents actually want to take your overall um opinion on the guys that maybe did take their chance create KC we hope he’s okay did you feel for the r that he was on he did well what about Jamie Osborne at filback getting that try yes or answera uh ran round him for the score but not many would make the tackle who else did you like to think ringr coming back into the freay after halftime um put a case to start next week of course Hena might be injured or whatever but how good how good was he and just overall or did you feel anyone didn’t really take their chance either Matt I I think it’s it’s so hard on picking a player at fullback that hasn’t had a lot of time there it’s such a difficult POS and you can see in that one play if you’re a meter too far or a meter not far enough you get stood up you get made to look stupid it’s it’s such an exacting position and Island have been spoiled over 20 years with guys like gerin Dempsey Rob Carney you know that are technically brilliant and and you know hug goes off playing in the sevens and then we bring someone in that’s not experienced there and I I really felt for for the players that are are put in that position because it is an exacting position and and they got a little bit shown up there but look I I I’m not that that I think part of this is giving people opportunity who’s our number two fullback behind Hugo and that’s a question that we haven’t answered you know Jordan L they wasn’t given the opportunity said it’s not him that position is so difficult so I don’t mind that because we’ve just done a World Cup we’ve got to give guys opportunities if you don’t give them opportunities you don’t know so everyone will criticize if a Coach doesn’t win every game they yell at him you know like we’ve got to give them the latitude to experience I thought Gary ringr when he came home was magnificent and I’ve I’ve as nothing against Robbie H Robbie H is phenomenal did an incredible job in the Six Nations but Gary is an out andout outside Center his defensive effort when he came on was I thought superb absolutely Immaculate nothing against Robbie henel Craig was positive um and and I certainly hope Craig’s okay he he he CED a not an illegal tackle he just it’s just the way things had his head whipped back on the ground and obviously we don’t we wish him all the best and and he he’ll recover but I doubt he’ll be ready for next week but it just shows how good jamson Gibson Park is with the pace he puts on the game so if you can put Pace on the game that Jamerson Gibson Park does it slows the South African defense down when Island were in South Africa’s 22 five minutes from the tri line I thought I thought we were we we really didn’t have a plan and and we were walking into South Africa um to the jaws of a trap what does South Africa want you to do they want you to pick and go because they are the best defensive team at pick and go one pitcher there I counted 14 players inside the up between the sideline and the upright there were 14 players one pass is a certain tribe and we couldn’t manufacture that pass now I know how hard that is because the South Africans rough so it’s easy for me sitting in the chap seats to say that but picking and going as we did I don’t know how many times multiple times is not the way to go Jameson Gibson Park speed and his pass might have changed that I thought Jack will learn from that Jack Crowley will learn from that he need to be a little bit if he got deeper and got another pass in I don’t think anyone could have stopped him from scoring a try so there were there were negatives and pluses against the best team in the world at altitude I thought the packed did quite well um we I was very surprised the South Africans ly out on the Jerry FL didn’t contest the front of the line out they gave is the front of the line out for the majority of the game I was really surprised at that and I thought Island managed that pretty well scrum was great at times obviously they gave away a penalty try later at the end of the game let me let me put in here at the 49 minute Mark Six South African forwards walked onto the field is that what the replacement laws for safety were design for and that is not any criticism of South Africa it’s not a criticism of rassie it’s a criticism of world rugby that allows that to happen that is not what our game is designed for the South Africans took full advantage of a loophole in the system and that that penalty try came from well why do you why do you not like that at all even though it’s within the games why like I know we’ve talked about this before in the past but what is the biggest bug bearer of having six forwards come onto the pitch well there’s multiple things with it’s true multiple things it discriminates against backs our game is for all shapes and sizes so in in that game you had 14 back forwards in that game that is not what our game was designed for that’s not what the Ancients designed for it it’s not what we did in the 80s 90s and 2000s it is not a game for 14 forwards and nine backs it should be relatively even it’s not never been 50/50 because you know we have an eight and seven but that is not what it is the other thing is the bench was a safety law so I’ve said to you I one of my clubmates became a quadriplegic the bench was a safety LW that is an is not safe what they did and maybe not International level but down the lower levels of the game right I won’t stop saying this dude because I passionately believe it but that you know and bringing Replacements on at that time just so close in the second half that’s not what it’s about now the the whole replacement laws they say are going to be reviewed in November and they need serious review because this is this isn’t this is abusing what our game is meant to be it’s abusing our ethos it’s abusing our traditions and it’s abusing our safety laws and it has to change I have no criticism of South Africa or Russy for doing it because it’s legal but you can see Ireland have gone to 62 teams across the world are going to 7-1 62 that is not what our game is meant to be and the law has to be changed not the coaches the coach’s job is to win the game the the responsibility sits with World rugby Alan do you want to pick up on that I know you’re maybe not as strong on that do you believe it’s still should be 53 no you 62 71 are you happy with whatever I don’t know really um I think look um it’s I I agree the point um you know I’ve always spoken about safety and and ways of of improving the safety of players and um we’ve seen lots of great improvements around um the hias and all that and the protocols there um look I suppose in a sense when you have that kind of depth South African can do that um how big an effect did you did you think those six forwards had on the game yesterday for the last half an hour um well I think Ireland you know if you’re playing if you’re you there’s fresh players coming on like it has to have an effect um I think it had an effect with that scrum at the end that dominance and you know we know that’s in their DNA um did win a scrum penalty straight away yeah they did yeah yeah I thought that was that was a big psychological one because that that’s the one I was really tuned in on this new front row in uh new second rows back row and you’re thinking this is the one that you know Russy wants to make a statement here and that’s why he’s done this but Ireland won a scrum penalty so um look it’s a complex situation um I think it’s something that will possibly change because of of safety and and uh you know impacts in the game well you know Rie me mentioned Matt his book about supporting him and and uh when he did his videos but uh the South Africans don’t like him for for talking about the 71 and I very much respect Matt’s decision but um yeah he’s always I I think look if you have that sort of luxury you know again it’s it’s within the law to bring on these players you know we saw number you know before my time but it wasn’t that long ago where only you could only make changes for injuries and stuff like that and we could end up going back to that situation at some time in the future because um you know fatigue and all that kind of stuff and it does and the impacts and the strength of all these players so it’s uh the bomb squad was uh made famous in 2019 for what they did and their impacts Off the Bench but look you need Replacements um I don’t think you’re you’re going to get to a situation where it’s going to be difficult for World rugby to say well you can only bring on three Subs in a game um but I think it will be looked at it will be discussed that and all these working groups groups involved International coaches ex players um you know delegates from World rugby as well so it’s something that may you know be looked at for sure going forward what concerns just to clarify I don’t think this is going to get an injury at International Ry I don’t think T Fong was in danger of getting injury what concerns me when an international team does it everyone copies it that’s the way the world is we copy Our Heroes and our greats what concerns me is what happens down in lower grades at the AOL in clubs in South Africa and Australia at the bottom line late in a game six players come on and there’s some goth or to that’s what concerns me yeah I think all all the unions and and different leagues have different protocols around that you know in junior rugby in Ireland they actually have five I think Subs is all or six maybe and they have actually rolling Subs so and that’s really because it’s amateur rugby and guys are not good enough and they get blown out and there you can roll on and off subs so it’s a very complex one I think we need to probably see more data as regards you know the impact of this freshness coming off the off the bench um but look in a sense that and and and and the reality here is South Africa have such uh so many powerful forwards and and what RI arasmus and and the rest of his coaches have developed his his huge Dept you know in positions that a lot of other International Teams would love to have um and they just have so many of those big powerful strong players um so it’s probably about seeing data and stuff like that but they’re not doing anything wrong illegal you know 100% 100% it’s in some ways um it’s it’s they’ve started a trend as regards you know it’s it’s it’s Brave it’s brave because bringing on Subs you know as a coach match Matt they don’t always work out either you know sometimes uh when and I found this as a player you know you’re the engine is well and truly humming and you’re you’re you’re you have that adrenaline rush and actually um you know when Subs come on you nearly get another surge of energy to go to go but like it’s the strength and the power of South Africa that that they possess it’s brave but it’s worked all if we get back to the match and I know you talked about it earlier but I actually want to get your overall opinion on it 138 arand still hanging in there very much game in the balance that rock happens the ball’s kicked out James L runs the length of the pitch or half the length of the pitch then they come back Ben White House comes in says that uh Rin Keller has kicked it out which he has done um obviously Willie laroo has that sort of neck roll or whatever you want to call it and they come back and dislo the try we don’t see too much of the TMO coming in for stuff like that I know Jacko Piper mentioned earlier this week they’re trying different things I’m not sure if it’s for instance like that or more very clear and obvious things but your overall assessment of that situation and if you were Andy farell would you be pretty disappointed well look I have no problem there’s there’s obviously updated TMO trials um around TMO and um I I’m always for um I I would I don’t mind a TMO coming in obviously if he’s uh decisive quick and it’s the right call anyone would say they don’t have a problem with the TM Mo I know we don’t is the right call then if it’s the right call this this is this is the thing you have to have um I think you need to be 100 100% sure that there’s an illegal action take place uh an illegal infringement uh to disallow to try compelling evidence um well I don’t know if Ron and kellerer if there’s compelling evidence to say that he deliberately hooked that ball back out of the breakdown I don’t think you can see I don’t he tries to counter up but I don’t think he can actually see because number one he’s dragged on to his side uh vly Laro has his arm around his neck it’s a neck roll and I’m not having any go Philly Laro here because if I’m in that situation I’m grabbing any part of Ron and Keller to try and pull him to the side and uh there was a number of neck rolls for both sides yesterday that weren’t picked up at all in the game which I would be more concerned about as regards the safety so at the end of the day you want to get to the correct decision I don’t think it’s compelling and 100% that you can say that Ron kellerer deliberately kicked that ball out of the rock on the ground he’s entitled to hook the ball back if he’s on his feet but the point that Ben ridos is saying is that he’s on the ground when the when he kicks the ball or hooks the ball back I cannot see and understand how he can actually see where the ball is because his head is completely gone to the side vly laru is on top of him and he’s got him around the neck so for me it’s a big call it’s a very big call the right or the wrong one I don’t right one you see I I I I want to try and I don’t want to kind of get emotional about these decisions and say oh because I’m Irish and this this it’s it’s a really big call and I think it’s a very harsh call so if if that try is given and even if it’s shown afterwards and people debate it I think you more you accept that you probably accepted more so I’m sure R Razzy would have been sending that video clip in if detroy was allowed on Ireland had won and gone ahead at that point I just think it’s a big intervention for Ben White I don’t think there’s H you know he’s it’s kind of a 5050 one Ben White House he obviously believes it’s it’s 100% correct I don’t think it is because I can’t believe and I don’t believe that Ron and Keller can see actually as as he’s underground and see what he’s doing we see a lot of balls hitting Fe there was one in actually 200 the last time um two years ago in 2022 where rasy put up a video about one of the Irish players kicked the ball out of The Rook uh and it wasn’t penalized um that was a very legitimate one to be fair I just think this one is it could go either way and unfortunately for Ireland it went against him I’m kind of sitting on the fence with Stuart because I don’t know I just can’t like it’s it’s it’s a big call that I I I just well you played the game played for Aron monster for so many years and don’t know how’s the general public supposed to know well the point I’m making is Ben White has to be really 100% correct and I don’t think he can be opinion wise he thinks yes it’s it’s an illegal action from from uh from Ron and Keller but they don’t they don’t take into the into account number one that there’s a neck roll there and number two that Ronan Keller cannot see where see what he’s doing he’s but his legs are coming as he’s dragged to the side his legs fly sideways and it Clips the ball and it goes back so I think I’d be more leading towards play on and legitimate try Matt another area of the game the Irish line out seen problems over the last 18 months or two years they lost a few is that still a concern for you yeah I I think they learned from their last uh experience against South Africa well they went to the front a lot they played the front of the line out a lot because South Africa gave them the front so South Africa were marking the middle and the back and they gave him the front a lot um but they won a lot more possession than they did early on especially than they did in the World Cup and the previous game before them look I I thought they the line out was pretty functional um they lost one at the end because all South Africa changed uh from marking just the middle in the back and went to the front and they they there was a line out on in the 22 and they lost it’s certainly not functioning like it was two years ago where the Irish line out was the best line out in the world but I was surprised that that South Africa gave them the front as often as they did like uncontested and even even the commentators were saying oh that’s a that’s an uncontested line out um again look this this I think the whole game is exactly what Allan basically said I thought that there were this wasn’t a a good a great Irish performance as I said I think it’s the worst Irish performance in a number of years line out included scrum included there was positives and negatives in scrum they got a penalty when The Replacements came on and they gave away a penalty try and got a sin bin I could I could I could I just say this to you and I don’t know what you think I I I don’t entirely agree with you and I I respectfully say that I think Ireland could have been a lot better but for me the reason why Ireland were were were not functioning as well and and as good as we we we possibly know they can is because of that pressure it’s Relentless with there it’s absolutely Relentless it’s every single breakdown you know when I play the game you’re going to get moments where you’re on you’re attacking the opposition and and you just get that surge of energy in the 22 where you’re rootless and your your your movement is really quick in the ground and you surge into breakdowns and you find this surge of energy and you know sometimes out the field it’s a little bit you don’t have to be as as as strong in your count in your in protecting your breakdown because the opposition are you know everyone kind of drops a little bit as regards that that intensity but for when you that pressure throughout the whole game Quinny like them the Rocks hang hang on boys that’s what the world champions bring you’re what have easy day on every right I’m trying to defend Ireland here Matt and I might be wrong saying you’re playing a team that never gives you a break nothing and I think Ireland and you know against like honestly I thought yesterday that performance from even though there was mistakes and it was disjointed would have beaten 95% of other International Teams you just you can’t I’m not disagreeing with that was that performance better than Ireland’s at Twickenham then no not in my opinion not yeah I think I think I think the performance was poor at twickingham I think that was that was that was the one that was uh that was a real dip there and that was maybe a mental part of that but I thought it yesterday in fairness the one big POS POS is the resilience but I suppose Matt going back to your point yes they’ll certainly look and be disappointed with some aspects of the game they lost their shape a little bit and again you know they’ll probably be honest with themselves and look at that and I think they can be better but look that’s my to and workart on on that pressure it’s Relentless you know I spoke to people since after the match yesterday today and I was trying to describe what it’s like you never get a minute break and you see the wi shooting out of the line but Ireland didn’t adapt as as well with with that composure and their accuracy around passing and and uh which will be disappoined from him absolutely and you’re never gonna get or very rarely are you gonna get Andre PA missing those kicks you know like I couldn’t believe the kicks he missed so you know South Africa should have kicked out a lot further Quinny we’re sort of on the same page my point is I think irland can take a huge amount out of that game they can play a lot better they can be a lot more a lot more contest a lot more in their kicking game the kicking game contesting I thought was was the worst in a long time that’s easy I agree on that one the the the kick that’s easy to get right and and they can go to n t with a lot of confidence they can turn that game around they lost that game by one score and I agree with what you’re saying about you if you play what ran kellerer did at real speed and and slow it down there’s no way that’s he doesn’t know where that ball is it hits his knee there no way if I wanted to see five more replays of kayin Doris placing that ball when it for the try I thought it touched the white line without doubt before it went to the knee we saw it one replay all that put aside South Africa with a better team they deserve to win Island can go to a TI play much better and they can win that game if they get certain aspects right but what your point is is 100% accurate you are still going to get the same mad pressure from the South Africans in the tal that’s the way they play that’s their that’s that’s in their DNA and I I just felt that irand didn’t play smart against that pressure as they’ve done in the past why no Johnny ston so Jack is a great young player and I’m not blaming Jack for losing the game he’ll learn from that game he’ll he’ll get better from that game that’s why we have these games so these guys can learning and get better South Africa deserved it but irand can win the next one Allan just a wrap it all up here in the last couple of minutes what do you want to see more of Ireland yes we could look at changes with injuries but as an overall play you know when they did attack a couple of times they actually got uh they scored a great try uh from the deut and dobor and then through the middle nice hands from the forwards Connor Murray was in the inside then Ryan be but maybe looking at changes what would you do there and also what do you want to see H from Andy farles team a bit more next Saturday it’s it’s I don’t think there’ll be many changes couple will be in forced I think Conor Murray will come in for Craig Casey um like Matt let’s hope he’s all right I think uh he put his hand up on the stretcher going away it took a long time um I don’t I think Gary ring Ross has got to come back into the team maybe he come back in anyway because baki’s holding his arm at the end of the game uh Robbie Henshaw took a heavy knock as well um Andrew Porter went off with I don’t know what happened his hand um and he ends up coming back on which is brilliant Dan shean you know was it a case of look the injury the twist in his knee was going to get worse and maybe they’re protecting him and you have a really good player in Ron and Keller to come on to be fair so I I don’t know will there be significant changes will Jimmy O’Brien come back in full back I uh it’s possible that’s a good point doxy J think you might Jamie Osborne I thought was outstanding in you know the the the testing kicks that they put up against him he overcommits an arance there does Jimmy O’Brien make that tackle and does Yugo Keenan make that tackle I suspect possibly because of that positioning he overcommitted a little bit there and I thought it was a big step from Maron it wasn’t it was just a little swerve really but look easier said than done I don’t I don’t know uh you could see a couple of changes freshening things up I think ring Rose will come back in Jimmy O’Brien he’s such a good back row for you Quinny um well Ryan bear had a real impact Off the Bench hadn’t he um uh James Ryan was was prominent as well I thought Joe McCarthy you know was really getting stuck in h Ty furong I thought hasn’t been mentioned I thought he was really putting himself around the field making lots of tackles um so they were they were they were what Ireland showed was incredible resilience and I genuinely believe a lot of teams would have wilted with that intensity that emotion you saw it in the anthems they wanted more than anything since that World Cup to beat Ireland here they were just it was one of those kind of ones that there was under no circumstances were they allowed on this Irish team they wanted to really make this so it was um high pitched emotional uh intensity that that South Africa were bringing and I thought Ireland really dug in there I was really proud of the fact that they never gave up do do they need to be better yes they need to be more accurate I think when when Joe McCarthy knocks on the ball um after the ARA try and Ireland Get It Get Right close to the line Matt mentioned it very compressed a little bit of panic and Peter pops it up it hits Joe McCarty’s head and knock on turnover you might only get one or two of them in a game three of them when you get close to someone’s line that are that good and I thought Ireland just little bit of panic there um again very aggressive line speed what monster did in against the Bulls and against the liines in South Africa was they found the edges with some kick passing and I think that’s something we didn’t really see of um so Africa did it a few times actually yeah yeah they did um and they’re they’re so hard out of the line and if they get man and Bol so it’s a it’s a different sort of pressure I think arand will learn and they look at the video and they’ll look at certain parts that that there was some uh space and how ID how they can identify to get into some space um the try was brilliant wasn’t it from Connor Murray because their shape is really good and I think out of fatigue at times they just lost their shape and South Africa just numbered up really well defensively so easier said than done I think it’s just about protecting the ball more and trying to get better shape in attack um the altitude definitely has an effect on players there you know and it was probably more so early on on um they got their second wind a little bit so um yeah I think South Africa will be better as well Stuart you know they’ll be better for that um but there’ll be certainly opportunities that Ireland will be disappointed they weren’t able to create and execute and uh and that’s what they’re going to have to do in Durban on Saturday if uh if they want to be in with a chance for win winning this because um you’re going to get the exact same aggression uh pressure at set piece um one of the things that that that’s difficult to comprehend for people is um they’re so good they have the best lineup defense in the world when you have Steph tooy master etet um and and you know you’re throwing these guys in the air they’re lifters are really good they’re anticipation and they let Ireland win a few early you know the vast majority of Ireland had to win you know win a couple at the front which is difficult to attack from now Ty burn I think looks very very composed and relaxed and he’s really grown into calling those lineups um of course they won a few middle and back but you know it’s difficult to get your attack going and uh you know step to tight wins one at the end they show the front and then he goes and wins it but look they’ve just got to be better right across the board the the worry and the concern is how do you find the energy after a bruising a counter like that but I think they’ll see they’ll see opportunities there and uh that’s the hope that they can they can execute some of them next Saturday in Durban finally a word our predictions New Zealand your predictions I should say New Zealand uh Ireland Australian was it France that oneone AR I said we all took artina we we Quinny and I had all the home team yeah it was all home teams and I just before you give your predictions Matt there’s a certain Anton FR on that Friday Friday well there’s a certain Anton frish who I believe um we’ll regret in years to come that he’s not he’s not kept as an Irish player because he scored a try and played really well for for France the monster the Irish influence in you oh it’s the Irish influence he’s the only only uh Gary ringrose like for like someone who can be as good and possibly get to that level but anyway I was just frustrated watching him playing for France genuinely and that that French Argentinian game was extraordinary for France on a couple of fronts one was that was definitely a French 35 but they left out almost everyone from the World Cup and I didn’t mention in our previous podcast I should have F Lupe kapam and and Fabian galti are close friends and have great respect of Fabian went over in coached in Argentina when he was starting out as a coach and I I had a coffee with Felipe and I want to say from my memory that he spent a Christmas in Felipe’s house his family house with his brothers and sisters many years ago so I think fipe would have really hurt from that I thought Argentina would win that New Zealand England game Kraken game was at the wall of his game long long way to go till the quality of that game was so far behind Ireland and Argentina sorry Ireland and South Africa and New Zealand and England it was it was certainly a class below um but Joe Smith as you said afterwards they won and they haven’t won in Sydney since 20 16 so he took it and ran with it and and it was great for the game in Australia to get the win wasn’t a classic game great try to win it at the end but uh was was pretty ordinary rugby right through for both sides and in case we get a barrage of of uh South Africans chasing us down now Matt we’re both in agreement short that um South Africa deserved to win that game but Ireland could have if things were a little bit different um they could have won the game and you know I’m pleased I’m pleased in the sense that uh the the the big the most pleasing thing for me is in in a really intense environment and such a big buildup Ireland kept going you know and uh that’s that’s encouraging um they’ve got to do it next week again even if they lose the game next week they’ve got to you know it’ll be to come home from South Africa losing the two tests to be very disappointing but um they showed yesterday that they’re still they’re still a very good Irish team there you I don’t think so I don’t think so sorry sorry I was just final word do you m oh look I agree with right along with said South Africa deserve to win they a far better team but Ireland showed so much um promise and I still say it’s one of the worst performances I’ve seen him play in a couple of years and you still took this the world champions at altitude within within one try I think you know if you sit back in the lot to day and you’re an Irish you can say we can take a huge amount about that exactly what Allan said that that group of guys they don’t know how to quit they don’t know how to quit and South Africa will come at you every second of every game that’s why they’re the world champions that’s what you want you want best team in the world against the second best team in the world to do what they did and that means next Saturday at Durban Island are in this game against the best team in the world and let me let me put one other thing for our South African critics wasn’t it wonderful to see the South Africans play the positive rugby that they did that’s what we want to see from our world champions there’s a responsibility that comes from being world champions and I thought they showed it on Saturday there was a much much more positive way to play our game and a much better example of how our game should be played than what they’ve done in the past all credit to them martinel thanks as always and we’ll be back on Friday head of an epic test to should be good chat then guys cheers thanks GE [Music] [Music] [Music]

Whether Kellerher kicked the ball in the scrum knowingly or not is neither here nor there. There are many infringments in rugby that are penalised even though not intentional, eg knock-ons etc.
Does the irish know that we've only played in 8 rwc? Does the irish know that we've literally won half of those? We're not the same.
South africa is never good. Its just the worst performance from the other team for years. Doesn't mention the 9 points we missed
"discriminates against backs"🤣🤣🤣
12:00 so we look at how unfwir the ref was with the irish. but no mention on the yellow card we got without even getting a warning? 2 penalties inside your 22 now means a yellow? I've never seen that before. and don't see you lott even mention that. sure Ireland got a yellow shortly after, but none of those should have been yellow. and that yellow nearly cost us the match. they also say how well Ireland fought back but don't mention they did it 14 vs 15…
So Matt, let me ask you this – and please guys, feel free to pose this question to this clever man on your next podcast – would you be discriminating against the forwards if you packed your bench with backline players, and purely played an expansive game, with the intention of running the oppo backline ragged and then bringing fresh legs on with 40 to play? Mate, I think you need to get over this whole thing and think further than your nose on this one.
Why does altitude come into it, if our players play all over the world it's only an advantage for the bulls players to be honest in my humble opinion
Hahaha lol more people watched Wildkart's review….😂
I dont understand Matt's safety stance. its safer for these big forwards to play less minutes jn a game. it will prolong there careers and hopefully prevent any long term injuries that we are starting to see in some of our retired front rowers. So every team should be managing the health of their forwards in rhis manner.
Matt is so bitter. Every tactic is hyper analysed. The laws are in place deal with it.
Salty Cry babies 🤣🤣 you love to see it
Matt Williams: I’ve got nothing against South Africa but…🙄🙄🙄
I agree with Matt, the back 3 were terrible. And snymen has a bit of an evil streak in him .
matt is an excellent pundit – and writer – i don't know why some south africans are so touchy about his critique – it's a legitimate point and it isn't 'personal' –
Matt is entitled to his views about subs etc and although I vehemently disagree and believe his comments come from a place of gross ignorance, if he just left it at criticism of subs etc then it is what it is.
But what is absolutely abhorrent is when he brings up his friend or people he knows who were severely injured playing rugby and then insinuates that SA’s bench tactics are somehow to blame for similar debilitating injuries occurring in the modern game. And it’s not the first time he has made this ridiculous claim either.
It is frankly disgusting to say something like that. And even though he apparently cares so much about this subject, he hasn’t bothered to do one ounce of research into the latest science around this area which shows that size and weight aren’t big contributors to injury but actually speed. Which is why backs are more susceptible to injury than forwards and sevens players more than 15s. Also more subs reduce injury risk overall too.
For someone who cares so much about this subject, he is so misinformed that it is wilful and malicious at this point and therefore his statements can only be interpreted as a malicious attack aimed at only one team in particular. Get this foul, loathsome person off the TV and don’t bring him back. He wont be missed
Why do you need to play players untill they're injured then replace? This is against saftey of the game itself. When players are in the red they are more injury prone. Williams needs to evolve.
Matt: "This was Irelands worst game in many years"
Alan: I disagree, it was because of the Boks pressure"
Matt: " Yeah thats what the World Champs brings. They are the best at giving you pressure"
😂😂 Matt is very entertaing but i seriously feel sorry for him for his hate for the Boks but I really dont know how he keeps his job.

That group of guys (Springboks), they don't know how to quit…
In South Africa we have an expression for that:
Hulle weet nie wat ons weet nie!
Matt's dislike for South Africa overpowers his weak attempts to try and be objective and fair as a commentator.

Matt is bleeding inside his chest 😂😂😂
What a ball of sunshine you have in Matt’ilda. You guys can really do better! Research shows that fresh players reduce injuries.
Allblacks, springboks never complain, only losers do
MATT WILLIAMS(Failed coach)……JUST GIVE IT UP ….GO BACK TO OZ
Ruck infringements have nothing to do with intent. They are mostly unintended.
Matt Williams is like the Joe Biden of rugby pundits.
Lol, here for bitter uncle Matt😂
Spirit of the game 🐎💩, if you follow this clowns theory Jonah Lomu would never been allowed to wear the number 11
In the interest of sports commentating, can Matt Williams be sent into retirement? He is an embarrassment for the trade of journalism!!
Williams just has no idea I don’t know why they give him a platform to talk rubbish in Ireland…. Nobody else does, I mean for this Buffon to say it was the worst performance he’s seen from Ireland …. Really mate?
