It’s not the only golf in the world this week but The Masters will drown out coverage of pretty much all else. With six Australians in the field and a host of the world’s best with legitimate claims to favouritism, it’s shaping as a memorable week in Georgia and the Playing from The Tips team has the breakdown on what to expect.

[Music] it’s the Masters The Season’s first major a tradition unlike any other and a time for players to outperform even their own high expectations this takes Focus commitment and trusting the best golf ball for your game that’s why the majority at Augusta National will rely on the Titleist prov1 or prov1x they deliver Superior performance consistency and unrivaled control titlist the number one ball at the Masters the number one ball in golf I’ve never seen anything like it before to attempt to hit the ball out of there is pure Madness the winner of the gold medal and the champion gol for of the year is Cameron Smith this is the one that I’ve always wanted to win since I was a little kid so it just feels pretty amazing to be able to get done today uh it’s amazing that it’s my destiny to be the first ay to win just incredible hello and welcome to our special masters episode of playing from the tips golf Australia magazines preview and tipping podcast covering all corners of the golfing World which are all almost exclusively pointing to Augusta National this week I’m your host Jimmy Manuel taking you and the Amen Corner obsessed so-called experts on the journey into all the details of the 88th Master’s torn ornament first of those supposed experts is a journalist podcaster and maybe the hardest hitter of a keyboard in World Golf who else could that be but Rod M or maybe John hugan but we’ve got R Rod welcome I got a complaint on a train once about my typing James marazan complain he gave me a lift to Cathedral Lodge one day and I was working the whole time he said I’ve never heard someone make so much noise with the laptop this is not recreational typing people professional you probably wouldn’t get it like it’s a working media thing you’d be a quiet type of wouldn’t you like office person I’m I uh I I don’t know I I don’t know I need somebody else to judge that for me I’ve broken three separate space bars on three separate laptops my giant thumb you hit a space bar with gets a workout and next the other voice we can hear and we are graced with is the presence of the man who blew up the internet when he published his own pimento cheese recipe and of course that is 2023 podcast Tipper of the year unici Adrian log log welcome thanks Jimmy yeah I’m looking forward to making it’s a master tradition in the log household yes is is uh making pimento cheese sandwiches with a few crisps and a nice girin or something on the side as well I think that one of the worst sandwiches in the world is saying nice giren like saying fun run is just a contradiction in terms doesn’t I like a some chips like crisp what is pimento cheese I know you’ve told me before but I can’t remember some sort of liquid thing isn’t it no no I mean it’s a paste a paste yeah yeah yeah it’s it’s at what viscosity level do we move from liquid to recipe I I say you mix it until it looks like American food recipe until it looks like American food that’s the instr that’s yes very good uh as we do every week before we dive head first into Augusta and the Masters it’s time to look back on the week that was UPS Downs tipping results what we liked and disliked I’ll start ell quarter wins in a row that’s unbelievable and a different conditions different causes different states give the Chevon now yeah Ryan Ryan French on Monday Q I’m sure lots of people posted he was the first one also who said there should be an asterisk next to the Master’s field this year because nle cour is not in not playing very good which is very very very good well done there was uh Augusta National Women’s Amer as well lty W one of the great names in golf already Bailey Shoemaker as well who run was runner up ing Lim blad it was that was everything you kind of hope and delivered the finish that you want y someone gets into the clubhouse early with an amazing round can another player hang on and wow Birdie the last two four the last five and bird the last two just extraordinary stuff and starting to get those players who win or go close and say I watched it 5 years ago or whenever the first one was and it inspired me a bit that’s that’s cool your man AE who won in Texas I was Drive CH and Y my long pter Brethren pulled out of shoulder doing a fist P I feel him in so many ways I feel him athlete yeah athlete and Denny McCarthy laying the S over one in a playoff it was could have been Saturday at mangr what a brilliant part of I’ve never seen Denny McCarthy on any on any coverage ever before but the moment he stood over the ball you’re thinking oh wow like there little bit of crena little bit of tiger about it as well little bit of Lauren Roberts there was another playoff for Liv Sergio Garcia losing Dean bmas winning that’s you know they’re getting some better finishes but of course then Dean bermas you know you won a bunch of times you’re not playing the Masters do you think we’re going to get that every single time uh wpj with one of the more remarkable ones with almost a complete wash out but in holes and a threeway unofficial win just wiing who is from Western Australia and a genuine good good player and great person Jess so she went pretty deep in a tournament in Asia recently as well didn’t she yeah Gooding one and one a car 9000 going to fin isn’t you yep and uh yeah was doing it all with clubs she’s had for a long time so has a has a hybrid she’s had for 14 years in the bag that she got a hand me down for her dad wow okay that’ll be the downside of the first sponsorship she gets won’t it yep that then it is a thing I said to her she was telling us that on the Range the other day and I said I actually sold those in one of my first jobs so that shows how young you are how old I am anyway that was a real shame for everybody up there and I can imagine how hard the green staff would have been working to try and get the place but they do all of that hard work and then it’s not enough it’s just it really is a tour just had a run of bad luck with weather with weather it really does any lastly on last week we managed to Collective three top 10 and quite remarkably actually three players who finished a shot outside the top 10 so we’re close look we’re we’re coming into this week that’s the sort of form you want that’s right you don’t want to win the week maj and that’s what we’ve all done by not tipping Nelly somehow uh so we now sit at seven Collective wins 54 Collective top 10 for the year as always unrivaled in golf tipping podcast produced by magazines in Australia uh let’s dive into the 88th Masters where 89 players will attempt to become the next to win a green jacket uh despite the course being the same each year Augusta National Golf Club does change from year to year and our man to Deep dive into what’s new different or otherwise is you log take it away thank you Jimmy I I’ll set the scene for you that’s what I want to hear literally paint a word picture for it that’s what for Augusta National is designed by alist McKenzie obviously greatly influenced by Bobby Jones uh two men who essentially bonded over their love of the old course and uh attempted to recreate some of the shop values of the old course and some of the principles of design of the old course and an inland setting and uh the thing is it’s a lot helier than the old course giant hummocks there at Augusta National it’s the thing that it’s the thing people say about Augusta National when they first see it is oh it’s a lot hiler than it looks on TV indeed it is and remarkably because I I saw someone post this the other day and it’s something you don’t think about you never see the Horizon you never see the ocean so what you often see is Hill into Hill which creates this depth perception where you can’t actually see it’s remarkable when you go and stand there element there deception yeah I mean notably second shot on 10 corre is like you’re just you’re downhill and this awkward sort of hanging line you’re just looking straight into another Hill with the green sort of perched up on top and you stand up on top of that Hill above nine green and look down to 10 green and yeah yep and that’s exactly the point I want to make is that everybody usually stops with that comment about it’s a very heilly Place much hiler than you think it is but how does those how do those Hills affect the play of the course and I think that’s the interesting part of it and it’s often the way your made to stand is awkward particularly for the shot that is being presented to you um I think about the ninth I think is a great example of that where uh you’ve you you’ve got this downhill lie and the green you’re sort of looking over your left shoulder at the green above your head and it’s a green that’s sting sitting at an awkward angle as well and in the back of your mind as well you’re thinking this is going to come out low this is a green where I don’t want to be past the pin cuz actually the toughest part on the golf course um but the other thing about the ninth is if you have the length L you can actually drive it all the way down into the flatter part but then and we used to see Norman do this right famous I think he did it I can’t remember what year it was where he’s spun it off the front of the ground like he’s put it right next to the pin and it spun all the way back off the he’s hit a great drive and he’s got a flat all eye and he’s short iron in his hand and he’s he’s made a meal of it let’s be honest made a meal of it yeah but what do you do from that position he what he really needed to do is take a little S Club and try and hit it a bit lower and take spin off it and all that Greg if only you’d consulted low before that final round in 996 it might be a very different Golf World Golf might be unified but I think if you go from you know whole to whole you obviously the 11th is another one where you know there’s all sorts of shot values asked of you depending on this time on what side of the Fairway I think you can make a case for the left side of the Fairway being as good as the right side of the Fairway depending on you and the sort of shot that you’re comfortable playing if you want to hit it more over the pond the left side of the Fairway is good if if you want to hit it sort of shape it around the pond the right side of the Fairway is good use something the slopes around the green that sort of thing I think that’s what sets it apart from many strategic golf courses is that you can choose the path that’s best for you and the lengthening of the holes is something that’s over the years is has retained those shot values and uh if you had to give up one or the other if you had to give up what the intention was off the T versus what the intention is on the second shots you would definitely sacrifice the t- shots good for the most part the t-shots are also still relatively interesting because it’s what sets you up for the second shot that’s best for you that long t- shot on nine wasn’t best for Norman in that case he might have been better off the down slow God force it if he’s listening will’ll be hair out this nonsense the 11th I think I F endlessly fascinating because for me I can’t make up my mind whether I would want to be hitting over the pond or around the pond yeah thankfully I’ll never have I’ll never have to thankfully you’ll never have to chip it from where Larry m did but the 11th of course is is the one where you know it’s probably changed the most of all off the team it’s now massive dog leg left 15 I think with the trees they put down the right of 15 given the trees already poke out on the left that really changed that a lot yeah it used to be really really wide um and all the greens actually 15 another one of course the second shot is extremely awkward it’s either a long iron into a shallow green or it’s a it’s a wedge like of a horrendous lie do whatever you can not to have to lay up Danny McCarthy is going to lay a divot over that one every single time under pressure and uh very shallow green you got to take the spin off it very lot going through your head no doubt uh on that second sh on the 15th so that’s that’s the thing I look forward to seeing in the Masters each year is is how each player chooses their pathway around the course uh and how it suits their game as well you know know instantly when a player’s in a position which is awkward for them there you go not necessar it’s not necessarily a position that’s awkward for everybody but it’s a a position that’s awkward for them or a t-shot that’s awkward for them you get a lot of that in the Masters Less in modern day Masters I got to say but uh when you look back at those old tapes uh it’s a really good example isn’t it of the course being the 90th player in the field it’s true every week but it’s particularly true this week cuz we all know it so well and as the player is saying to himself with the club still over his shoulder oh I wish I had hit it there we’re see at home going oh you don’t want to hit it there and I think every player in the field is familiar with what’s come before them where they stand there and they know a shot that’s been hit there before and go well do you know what the worst outcome would be if I did what x did what year and suddenly that’s a question mark that’s going through their head yeah there’s a lot of stuff going through your head there uh so one change to the course this year the second is now about 20 yards longer the te’s move back into the left a little bit it’s now the longest the Kennedy that’s the uh Zuta Zuta change uh it’s now the longest hole on the course 585 yards uh yeah backing to the left I think makes that you can take a little let off less off the dog leg it’s almost the te’s almost on the on the fence basically that was there is there any property they can buy I think they already have what behind there yeah uh weather for the week uh is looking around mid10 to mid 20s every day uh probably a little bit of rain and storms on Thursday is uh what is the mail I’m getting um but uh other than that it’s going to be pleasant sunlight should be good television viewing course is apparently pretty firm the it’s every report is that it’s pretty firm as firm as has been for a couple of years so I don’t think we’ll get a Zach Johnson type of Masters out of this no it doesn’t doesn’t have that sort of a feel to it it certainly looked firm in that an I was going to say yeah the problem with that of course being that the Way Augusta National set up they can just turn it off and on so that gives you no occasion in fact the players talk every year don’t they about the change from Wednesday’s practice round to Thursday different golf course yeah step on the first screen Thursday morning and put it off the green because like whoa what happened there yeah well speaking of Wednesday as well I just want to take a parting shot of the path recour which I think is terrible it’s just uninteresting small circles for greens it’s basically Hudson Park with his alas all mile to a at G mile.com Hudson Park with if you miss if they’ll put that in Clubhouse cruy snatched away from us by was it bwood Council snatched away I don’t know yeah they just closed it one I just announced it on the web if you’re nostalgic for Hudson Park just turn on the PA Three Tournament there you go that’s Hudson Park okay uh let’s turn our attention to some players that we tear it up on Thursday and of course it’s a major everyone’s kind of worth watching even the older guys who can’t win it’s exciting to watch them no burnhard Langer of course post pickle ball incident uh but John Ram defends his idal after an impressive showing particularly in the late stages last year to win a second major uh that was all before he joined live golf of course where he’s yet to win this year but it’s been very consistent uh top 10 pretty much every sort of week but what does that mean going into a major we don’t know uh he’s always hard to base his form off anyway so he strikes now that he’s won there as one of these guys he’ll be there every year contending and sort of getting close and everything like that so to Scotty Sheffer who’s arguably the hottest player in men’s golf this year year we say of course men’s golf because Nelly C is on much more of a heater than he is uh pter shows up Scotty sheffer’s a chance Brooks keco is another of the live contingent runner up last year or co- runner up last year also won a major absolutely take nothing out of the fact that he’s not playing that well at live golf events week in week out he couldn’t care he doesn’t pay attention uh that was the case when he played the PJ tour as well and he is going to be another one who looks likely to contend here lot and just has to sort of get over the the hump of getting right into Sunday contention he sort of was there in 2019 was there last year I think he’ll have learned from last year I think he was very and he was very open about how upset he was with himself for falling into a bunch of traps that he really shouldn’t have and I suspect that that lesson certainly held him in good stad at the PGA later last year but I think again this year he will feel a bit like some of the Augustin nean over the years he should already have a green jacket and it’s been his own fault that he doesn’t yeah and that’ll be burning him and that’s a dangerous Brooks kka to run into a determined Brooks kka so that shows you how good of a major player you are that the ones you haven’t won necessarily aren’t someone else’s doing a playing Great Golf that you’ve done something that’s the Norman thing I mean he should have won a whole bunch more but it was mostly him who did it himself wasn’t outplayed by for the most part uh you’ve got the likes of always mentions for these sort of things Jordan SP Dustin Johnson Hadi matama Xander CHL Tommy Fleetwood uh veterans are always a chance at austa Tiger will get to a bit more in depth shortly Phil Mickelson showed last year you can kind of never discount him he’s got a new caddy so brother Tim has given it away John yabra is on the bag and there were some videos of him uh reading greens for Phil the other day and he’s renowned as one of the best green readers there is on as a caddy a deadly combination so that’s a very good combination around someone who knows the speeds and everything so well there uh Sergio Garcia lost in a playoff last week so he might be you know a bit of an outside chance and then you got Young Guns as well AE baa as we mentioned before makes his debut after being a Drive Chip and put Champion uh and ludvig orar remarkably makes his major championship Deb it’s extraordin already played a rder cup never played a major he ranked in the world he’s in the top 20 yeah something like that yeah so like just okay to without ever having played a major yeah uh then you’ve got Victor holand another one that clk’s first Masters Clark’s first Masters we were going to say yeah as well he’s already W of major and top 10 in the world rankings it’s it’s kind of a strange strange year with all those guys people don’t typically win The Masters in their first time but there’s a lot of guys there that you know you’d be very brave to say they no chance but then what about this for a little tidbit Jamie Kennedy on X or the artist formerly known as Twitter over the last 20 years the average Masters average Masters champion has been 32 years old ranked 17th in the world with eight previous appearances at austa who is it who is it TL Hatton is currently 32 years old ranked 17th in the world and this is his eighth Masters P 17th in the world and falling remarkable that is remarkable and probably not but yeah wouldn’t it be he’d be just I love tur hat at his tantrum some people don’t there was a beauty on the weekend Corporation he’s just magical you would love to see a meltdown on the 18th hle where he had a tantrum and then through to win that would be a remarkable thing for a guy like that to win at a place like that where everyone gets frustrated and he gets more frustrated than anyone at golf courses that do nothing wrong to him so he’s more used to it maybe yeah better prepared he he lives in that constant anxious and Angry World uh and then of course there’s Rory mroy it’s the third last week in Texas now played 15 Masters made 12 Cuts 32 rounds under par done some work with Butch Harmon that looks a little bit like it’s mainly back swing sort of stuff doing some really um really focused sort of practice swings and pausing and stuff uh could it finally be the key for Rory to win at austa it’s about the wedges isn’t it with Rory people talk about the poter but a lot of times the putter is a result of he’s further away from the hole than he should be from where he’s driven it because his wedge play is not as good as it sort of should be so and it’s always been an issue for of break great pit from 10 years ago with his coach talking about how they’ve always had trouble because he’s so Speedy with his hands very hard to control on the almost needs a a different swing short answer I’d love to see Rory get it done but I’ve always had this awful niggling fear that he’s the next Augustin e man in the wise cop Norman mold and results actually don’t even reflect that I think his second was it last year is sorry 2022 was his best ever finish at tends to back door those top 10 as he does in quite often too he’s out of wi though for example four second place finishes yeah yeah he hasn’t shown as many as much as you would expect from the way everyone speaks about it but is the kind of generational standout in terms of ability um and that early you know 201 yeah exactly just the odd loose shot and I think Augusta more than any place in the world punishes the odd loose shot and he’s such a such a momentum and confidence player I always say you can see when Rory is going to play well he’s got this bounce in his step his the head looks like Dicky knee from hey he at Saturday when he’s got the hair grown out that he walks around and you can see him bouncing around and he seems to walk through the gates of that place and the bounce isn’t there it’s he’s on edge and yeah it’s just so we’ve got the shark the golden bear and the what did you call ite the dicky knee that’s a mon uh with all that to download internally who do we think for our first tip of the day is going to win The Masters this here log well that’s a for those listening at home that’s a confident sigh since you’ve if if you were going to pick me to go first I was going to go with Scott Sheffer so I’m going to I’ll just go withot Scott Sheffer be a bad taking him off the table that’s yeah defensive move yeah that’s he’s playing chess we’re playing checkers right um oh can you tip anybody but spe after last week’s an oh that was that is that is just Peak spe we are back to Peak spe and when he walks through the or drives through the gates here he becomes a different player every single year he’s extraordinary um it feels like it’s a RAR year to finally have a go but I can’t in all good conscience tip him so I’m going to go with Hideki Hideki showed some stuff last week in Texas that was really impressive he’s clearly he’s won there before obviously he’s another one of these ones that poter has to show up but like a ball striking freak that doesn’t get full due for how good he is just back to Rory for a moment we talk about Norman and falo 96 if he’ played with anybody else in that final round would Norman have won a lot of people think so if Rory had played with anybody but Patrick Reed in 2018 would we be looking at different results there was a there was an element of that to it I thought M well I agree with that absolutely for both of them read game absolutely elevated without question with with the concept that he could beat him it’s the Masters The Season’s first major a tradition unlike any other and a time for players to outperform even their own high expectations this takes Focus commitment and trusting the best golf ball for your game that’s why the majority at Augusta National will rely on the title as Prov one or prov1x they deliver Superior performance consistency and unrivaled control titlist the number one ball at the Masters the number one ball in golf uh let’s move along to our next little subsection and Aussie’s in the field six there are trying to join Adam Scott at the Champions dinner for 2025 Rod you’re going to take us through the Australian can we call it 6 and a half with Ryan Fox do we claim a bit of Ryan Fox we tend to do it with most successful new zealanders so why not yeah um so I’ll say six and a half I’ll leave him till last all right so the list is Cam Davis Jason day this is alphabetical minw Le cam Smith Adam Scott and Jasper stubs of course Ryan Fox at the end even though not alphabetically at the end uh go one by one Cam Davis I’ve always had the he’s he’s he’s a better player in some ways than his results speak but he’s got to be he’s got to get to the pressure point of the tournament and that’s when he really shines yeah whenever he’s been in the mix and had a chance he’s either got got it done or not so he’s certainly got all of the physical skills required to play Augusta National he’s only had one appearance there he finished 46th in 20122 no shame in that very few people figure out to make the cut on your first Go Round Augusta National is good I wouldn’t him to win unless we got to the 11th T Sunday afternoon and he was within a shot or two and then that will be that’s Place bold of you it’s very bold yeah that is bold as you’d say that about any someone to win until they’re within a shot to go right I was Dripping with sincerity more about the it’s more about the what seems to happen to him when he gets close I remember that 2017 Australian Open as you probably do to not mention until he was through about 8 or n and suddenly it was well he did hold out on the 64 11 I think he hold out his second on the not without a chance but I said I wouldn’t tip it’ll be interesting to see how much better he goes this year than 2022 as well he wasn’t there last year so Jason day what do you say well he’s not in his 2015 sort of 16 form but Augusta has been mostly a happy place for him four top 10 in 12 starts made the cut 10 times 2011 I think is when we most look back that was a hell of a tournament was a hell of a tournament maroy with the hook into 10 that and Jason day was just full of piss and vinegar the three young guys if there was him Rory and Ricky I think did they play together they were all sort of fresh kids of the next big thing well not in the last day no not the last day but they grouped him in the first round and they were all the talk that week and was his first Masters he almost pulled it off yeah that’s right and of course Adam Scott and Jeff we were right there deep into the back as was a fabulous week for Australia until about the 15th schw we got schwar exactly so look child yeah I don’t know he’s not back to that 2050 15 16 it’s been a sort of a mediocre year was in the top 10 heading to suay last year shot 80 in the final round Jason days sure what happened there with maybe Hur himself didn’t want to waste it for this week depends it depends which Jason shows up I guess but certainly he knows his way around there so you wouldn’t count him out Min wo Lee might be one of the most interesting players in the field this course should suit him perfectly a flamboyant player kind of in the mold of you know that not not quite but that melson Palmer Sav kind of shots love to be the center of attention and that is his Ace in the hall I mean he goes weeks and weeks and weeks doesn’t play particular but if he gets him with a show particularly in a big event loves to be the center of attention that will stand him in good stead I don’t think it’ll be his year quite this year he’s played twice being a little bit Yeah terrific debut missed the cut last year but again I think he’ll be one of those players a bit like SP where you’ve got the rest of the year then you’ve got the Masters and that’s a different week you can’t take much from the rest of the year before he gets there one thing I do think about M he will be exciting yes he will make the highlights most days he’ll do something uh extraordinary at some point so yeah I think he’ll be really um he’ll really feed off the the sort of vibe there cam Smith now is it Beware of the Wounded golfer or is it the hills of Augusta are too much for somebody who’s been ailing in the week before it’s a really tough walk this over four days and that’s got to be a factor at some point if he’s been unwell and his energy or his strength is down that might be just enough um who knows having said that uh he’s got a good record here obviously to agree he’s one of those players makes a makes birdies in bunches we saw it a couple years ago when he shot 66 in the final round uh that sort of player can do really well here again if they can be somewhere around there if he’s four or five back going into Sunday you wouldn’t ride him off no he’s a sort of player who knows if I got to shoot 63 to do it he’s one of those who can go out and do it I just don’t think he’s in particularly consistent form yeah I’m yeah just he showed a couple of things I think this is the difficulty of tracking someone like that playing live golf inconsistent sort of in terms of how regularly they play and the golf courses they play and everything like that he showed something in Hong Kong and he shows up and he gets sick in Florida you just you really don’t know of all the players who went to live the high-profile players he feels like the one to me who the Competitive Edge was do slightly yeah I think he’s a player who needs to be playing a little bit more week in week out and out of keep his Competitive Edge honed whereas you know Brooks is more like well just going to get up for events he wants to get up for yeah so I’m not sure I wouldn’t tip cam this week but then again as I said beare the wed golfer who knows Adam Scott well he needs no introduction here obviously he’s still Australia’s only winner he’s quietly been playing last year I know you’ve been following a bit Jimmy you tipped him a couple of times he’s been playing much better than the headlines well there’s been no headlines about that he’s kind of drifted out of that high-profile space and he’s just another golfer tied 14th last week yeah it’s been a good year for him grinds just such a grinder didn’t break 70 last week to be t 14th is that right I believe never gives up no never gives up on his career never gives up on any round like just grinds it out always has not missed the cut here since 2009 um first round seems to be the go if he has a decent first round for the most part he tends to have a good week so important to get off to a good start I think that’s probably true of him more broadly too yeah he very very very much his anti kind of tiger tiger used to always sort of very slowly come out of the gates Adam needs to come out of the gates well to find himself in that stuff and seems to lift as much as Adam’s not Min Lee in terms of the center of attention being where he loves being all the time he seems to in that in the version of that of leading or being near the lead of a tournament is where he thrives plays his best golf yeah he’s he’s one who speaks often every time you listen to him in a press conference that when he talks about golf the word Rhythm will come up the rhythm of the Swing the rhythm of the course the rhythm of the week and I think that’s what that’s about he’s in a good Rhythm from Thursday that’ll carry him all the way through so you wouldn’t run him off he’d be one of be almost a bit of a Ben crall story there he was The Prodigy at all that time and then suddenly I don’t know 10 12 years later he grabs a second one there’s a few players like that his 23rd Masters yeah he’s missed what two cuts three Cuts I think uh I hadn’t written down here but last one he missed was in 2009 that’s quite extraordinary yeah all that so yeah look go Adam would be lovely to see him do it again who knows Jasper stubs well he’s already won hasn’t he just by being here just by being there I really really liked you would have been on the call I really liked his attitude towards you know goal one make the cut and then just try to push forward from there it’s realistic it’s achievable it’s lofty it’s got everything go it’s a really nice mature attitude towards it clearly we won’t be picking him to win this week but will be an important week in his career he’ll probably get to play practice rounds with the likes of Cam Smith Jason day Adam Scott and who knows who else and he’ll leave Augusta be it Friday or Sunday knowing where his game stands against truly the very best in the world and that’s an enormous lesson it’s hard to find that out yeah when you get to sort of that level if you’re one of the best in Australia where does that put you in the world well we think it puts you right up there but you don’t know till you go there and test yourself so huge week I think for Jasper stubs and a really nice young man really good and Aussie veteran caddy yardage bookmaker and Simon Clark on the back former Adam’s former Simon Clark couple Simon CL there’s another Simon Clark it worked for Aaron badley for a long time has done some work for Jeff hogre we’ done work for a lot of guys worked in Japan for a long time but C for him at Royal Melbourne when he won the Asia Pacific h taking him with him that’s team effort really one of the one of the nicest guys there isk it’ll be interesting to watch that and said he’s already won if he’s still there Sunday that’ll be a massive victory for him so well done and the Harr Ryan Fox tied 26 on Deo last year he’s got the long game for this course no question we know that belts at Miles and can do all that sort of stuff putting and iron play not his strengths and that’s kind of not a great formula for no Augusta Augusta is really about iron player the best iron players when AUST because they hit it in the spots where you don’t three pun yep if you hit it in spots where you’re going to three with your IRS then you’re going to struggle all week if you can hit it in those little boxes around the hole it give you a chance to tart and occasionally have one fall in they’re the players you look at spe when he won in 2016 just extraordinary iron play tiger of course one of the great iron players and what a shame we won’t have the best iron player of the last 20 years in the field Taylor G according to so he could show off his wees yes uh indeed uh let’s get a top Aussie Rod we’ll go to you first given Lo felt he was I don’t know thrown under the bus and he had to tip first last time I don’t understand that but okay I look and look and look and I keep coming back to Adam mhm I just feel like Adam he’s got everything which unfortunately sorry Adam that’s probably the kiss yeah that’s right but I do think Adam not missing the cut since 2009 that tells you something about that he’s almost playing a home course there in as much as he’s every most likely to make the weekends I just I just think Adam out of all those like yeah I’ll go with Jason day it’s uh not holding great hope for any Australians this year unfortunately the cavat Bic course every player at this level on the right week can win it so it only has to happen on Wednesday afternoon Jason hits one shot and goes Ah that’s the every golf has that’s the swing for he’s got the week and he’s Unstoppable both of them Jason day and Adams got I think the bank cral comp for Adam Scott’s quite good actually but they uh either either one could be having that sort of week that Jeff Ogie had in 2011 it’s just you’re going to spring up and this could be the one that you get to contend in again you know where whereas maroy seems constrained and without the bounce when he walks in there Adam and Jason seem to gain that level of comfort enjoyment no matter where they are with their games like which cut streak of Adam Scott says that exactly uh I think Adam Scott as well he’s been trending in all the right areas he’s played better earlier in the year and kind of slowed back down but last week was a good sign of where he’s at he’s going to do something this year you’ve just got the he’s going to do something maybe it’ll be the open maybe it’ll be here but Adam Scott’s got one more it feels like there’s another major where he’s going to get right in the mix of it and everyone’s going to go how good is he so wedge plays always a concern with Adam I think not unlike Rory probably escaped bit of criticism because the putting was always a focus the putting has been a lot better for a long time statistically he’s up there with the put and has been for a long long long time I remember that seven hole playoff he had at Royal Pines with Greg Charmers and Wade Orby who fell out after the sort of think first or second hole he drove it basically in his own divot yeah seven straight times and couldn’t get it inside 20 ft from the flag any of the seven times with a sandwich in his hand if you give a world class player that’s seven cracks in the Flor they’re going to hit one stiff aren’t they but not even close and that really sort of pointed out yeah yeah uh finally on Augusta Tiger Woods comes back to action after a last start withdrawal with illness at Riviera where there was ambulances and all sorts of things and questions like everything with tiger uh of course last year he looked fairly miserable in pain the rain and everything like that made it wet and hard walking for a man with basically half a leg uh and he did withdraw here last year as well what do we think happens with five-time winner this week I feel like last year we finally got over tiger even the most Ardent Believers after last year sort of went actually maybe he’s done you can never say he can’t when you never say never with tiger and golf but my goodness that would Eclipse Jack’s 86 at the age of 46 if he could get up and do it again as you say but the fact that he’s there tells you he thinks he can win yeah and there he was there nice and early he was there you know playing practice around be walking Quite Comfort what I’ve seen yeah looks to be a bit more comfortable Sunday afternoon if you already walked at 3 and a half times it might be a bit different given the treatments that he’s got to give his leg just to sort of get out there he’s up at whatever time in the morning just to be ready to walk let alone play golf tournament so having said that he’s the biggest thing golf’s ever seen in terms of you know media Juggernaut and all that sort of stuff so anytime he tees it up it’s interesting it’s always interesting he’s electric one those players I think the best we can hope for these days you know with to and the Masters in particular is the sort of was it 98 that Nicholas beat tiger like something like yeah yeah something like that yeah bu hip not truly contending but Nicholas had a operation not long after that cuz the hip was a mess it feels like a like a made cut and then a little Saturday afternoon run and everyone gets a bit excited and then he finishes you know tied for 26 and everyone goes Ah that’s pretty good the alternative could this be I mean what article is going to select a paste on the fridge all Bob drum and Jack Nicholas in 86 could Tiger have that moment he’s never had the world telling him on mass you can’t win ever in his life yeah just my get his back up enough I mean you want us open literally on a broken leg Yeah wow like that’s yeah he’s yeah so he has done it before like there just so much energy required over four rounds I think that uh and even looking at John Ram last year who was so strong but that final round was just so taxing mentally and physically just between him and kka just dueling it out there 12 round heavyweight fight was both a mess afterwards it was just such an intense pressure cooker that uh you know obviously he’s been there and done that better than anybody almost in the history of the game but it’s uh very difficult mental there more the mental thing than the leg for me well I think I think he requires now which he’s never experienced everything go his way in a week which is physically that he doesn’t wake up any of the days with the leg being sore and needing more treatment and unable to walk he needs his golf game to show up and he needs the other guys to give him a hand kind of the other like if if if it gets to a Sunday and Tiger’s played really well everything’s gone to plan and it’s up against K kurur and RAM in a final round jeel that’s he’s going to need a lot of help from those guys probably to to years ago correct it’s they would have just they laid down didn’t they he was winning golf tournaments with not his even probably his b game you know because the ability level but also the intimidation and everything like that that’s that’s just not going to happen anymore so everything G needs to go his way epic if he did it can you imagine that even I might miss golf riding for just a bit if he managed to get it done on Monday morning a time uh given we are talking tiger it’s a n natural segue into an outsider tip log does uh Yokum nean count as an outsider it was my thought too I’m taking him yeah Y nean is my Outsider yeah didn’t pick it back up so that’s I had W him nean I think he’s got that reason to play doesn’t he he’s got something to prove players with something to prove particularly who’ve come from a uh you less than Country Club background tend to be pretty dangerous I think he’s done quite well before then I didn’t check his results but yeah surprisingly the low ball hitter is suit him but then he did all right at uh Roy Melbourne as well in the President’s Cup and so like it just immediately lot of stuff Stacks against him but then you think yeah actually can he gets it done with that game of his you know I’m going with you I’m going okay I’m going in the great history of slightly oddam named American Masters winners and going with the man who laid the S Denny McCarthy sure think think you know that be a I want to see more Denny McCarthy I’m yeah that’s really really I’m all in on Denny like it’s like he puts the dots off it my first view of him was like he crouched down to read a in a way that I don’t see any tour pro these days crouching down to read a like there was nothing mechanical about it or anything he was just sort of stalking around and then crouched and he had he was holding his putter in a weird sort of way and then just sort of moved into it stood over it and stroked it and it was it was wonderful I was thinking wow that guy can p yeah it just it feels like a year for one of those guys we’ve had a lot of like the expected or overseas players and and all this sort of stuff you need a Larry m every so often I agree I feel like it’s a year for a surprise winner yeah there’s too many guys at the top of the game with legitimate claims to be the favorite this week that somebody from the background is going to sneak over the top Bradbury style and say thank you very much fellas yep exactly uh before we do finish there is some other golf on this week perhaps the most interesting outside of Guster and maybe even more interesting even more interesting in some ways Women’s World sand greens at walshire in New South Wales waler Walker sorry Walker yes that’s right sand greens uh wpj tour of austral Asia event uh includes mariao who’s okay part of getting the invites to play the other two events was to go here um she spoke that’s a good idea I spoke to her and I was and I said what about that and she goes yeah well they sent that thing and I just went yeah that’s fine then she goes I actually looked at the fact sheet and went all the greens are made of sand and so she actually played an Epson Tour event where Dwayne Smith husband of Sarah Jane Smith was catting I think for Cassie Porter and said what’s the deal with this so he’s giving her the drum don’t land it on the greens you know you got to rake it and do all that sort of stuff all the players are the thing is all the players are pretty much getting their first taste of it well they they did do sort of an exhibition of Doney do a couple years ago know with the ladies European to a field which was interesting in some ways it’s a shame it’s on this week because it’s going to be Ted I think the last round is on seven plus down here that’s the sort of thing that grab World attention it’s just different enough the look at these crazy kids in Australia they play on Sand greens but not the only place in the world that plays sand greens but it’s sort of very much Associated us sand green Champion used to get a masters invite is that right there you go what hope would a sang Champion have at austa National on those greens I think it’s one of the ones that took away yeah world but no it’ll be worth watching Walker which has on its sign out the front uh ranked the best sand green Course in New South we should take self declared you could just put that there and want to go okay Jimmy we should go and record world’s world’s best Australian M podcast Ty podcast made by an Australian magazine we should go and host a special one from Ed Walker I I’m very jealous of Tony webeck who’s actually out there covering it all week because be fascinating there is a men’s version coming later in the year as well um but it is going to be something special so if you do get a chance to to pick up a little again you know full marks to golf New South Wales for some of this sort of innovative stuff that’s a terrific idea knows what kid might turn up there this week and see something that sets the course or changes the course for the rest of their life they fall in love with the game and they go on to become a pro those sorts things those things happen at the country newes has produced of stars well if you fall in love with golf out there you can get access much more so than the city got so many good players have come from country areas they just get access they can school holidays and can get to the golf course at 7:30 in the morning and leave at 7:00 at night exactly what I did every school holidays at mland you’re not doing that at most City three of my friends turn pro from M you’re here yeah uh there’s Mark Haz will also be there can you imagine anyone more in their element than hazy in Walker covering a sand greens event what the pie situation is in W di I’m sure di sure he’s reached out to the great Brendan James for a little little guide but I’m also hoping Walker as just a town has enough Pepsi Max to keep the big fell charging for the week uh there’s also the Australian Junior Amer out at uh gosnell’s Golf Club in Western Australia always to see who comes out of that there’s a brother sister Duo from goals who are getting Lee talk early okay harsh for them butting we need stories man who knows we need stories one of the brother who has a a little plattered rats tail so new era of golf I’m right around that is that Anthony Kim do Anthony Kim over thead or is it just a ponytail it’s a little like bun situation yeah uh and you’ve also got Challenger PJ tour of austral Asia Q School final stage this week so it’s a kind of big Week locally um obviously all those people who looking for a job or looking for another job if it doesn’t go to plan they don’t make news but they’re hugely important weeks AR they for for those guys massively uh that’s everything Rod you’ve been jacket worthy this week maybe not green fuchia plaid plaid fuch no he’s no he’s not a Heritage man no way would just look like such a clown in a Heritage I want to say that you could the inner Heritage jacket’s redundant in that sense isn’t it yeah clown uh L are we going to get another recipe this week maybe a master’s Club no no I mean the secret formula that everyone wants to know is the Georgia peach ice cream sandwich which thankfully supped this year yeah yeah and it is the best thing on that my God way to mess with our heads is like take it away one year and now we’re going to be guessing could they just do that again that’s I guarantees where is it written that this can’t happen again imagine the Masters Tournament board just sitting around and being like let’s just mess with them for a year and take it away exactly just just to let them know that could happen yeah imagine being our man well my man Preston Smith in the communications offices at Augusta National probably dealing with inbounds about what happened to the ice cream sandwiches when your job is to run media for one of the biggest events of the Year first question you would have got this year the Ice Cream Sandwich yeah that’s right I’m sure from the media assembled yes thank you jent that is all for episode 58 of from the tips follow all the Masters action on the golf Australia magazine website golf australia.com including this week multiple fantastic the thing about golf podcast episodes that John Huggin is compiling from on the grounds at Augusta National this week first one be out a bit later today uh Ben crore well you’ve said it now it’s got to be out I said it last week and I’ve been worried ever since but thankfully overnight it came in by email via weed transfer Huggy got the job done so we save you so keep an ey on that website all week cuz there will be some other stuff from Huggy as well but those podcasts he does
