now there are a lot of drills out there that can help you with your game and this one is a fantastic way to Pure your irons now it is based around a pretty simple principle at impact we want this club to be on a slightly descending angle through the ball this is known as a downward angle of attack now the shorter the iron I have an eight iron here the greater that angle of attack will be the longer the iron generally the more shallow it will be now this is to do with Loft it’s also to do with the length of the club if you do want to check out a video on ball positions make sure you do so here the second thing we want to ensure is that the hens return slightly ahead of the baller impact this helps with the downward angle of attack but it also helps with control of Loft and finally we want to try and ensure that the strike on the ball is coming from somewhere near the center of the face this is what’s going to allow that nice pure feeling in the hands but also allow the best transfer of energy into the ball possible the final thing to ensure is that you are subscribe to the channel amazingly over half the people watching this coaching video trying to improve their games are not subscribed to the swing Quest Channel and as we March unerringly towards 100,000 here on YouTube YouTube it would be great to have you as part of the community now I’ve done lots of drills in the past about impact and things you can do to better improve strike and you can check some of those out at the end of this video however it impacts sometimes the body in the club are just moving too fast for you to feel any meaningful change often and what today is about is getting a better framework a better structure within the swing so that when you approach that point of impact things are in a better position to allow you to get everything we’ve just spoken about in a better place so today we are going to take a journey into creating space and time so with space and with time we can make things just a lot easier to achieve and we’re going to do this in two ways first of all by creating width within the back swing so with your lead arm for me I’m a right-hander so my lead arm is my left I’m going to take hold of the grip I’m just going to move my right hand out of the way put it behind me put it in my pocket you know do whatever you want just don’t let it get in the way and as you move up to the top of the Swing I’m just going to try and stretch my hand and get it as far above my right shoulder as possible so turn away stretch and just try and get as much width up that now as you can see for a hagged old golf professional like myself that was quite tough work but you’d be surprised at how much effort it takes to push your Club into this nice wide position so a little drill that you can use the right hand that was doing nothing before just pop it on the back of your forearm and as you try and get that lead arm as wide as possible apply that little bit of force with your Trail arm and you’ll notice how much further and how much wider you can position that left arm it’s a great drill to use and it’s a great feeling to have so you can see just how much extension I have here in that left arm it’s my right arm moves on my trail arm it will go down a little bit just naturally cuz my right arm is a little bit bent and it sits a little bit lower but by getting that feeling and by all means you can practice this in your house at the range wherever it may be you can start to create that wonderful amount of room that you’re going to need because room gives you space gives you time so now for the main part of this drill we’ve created lots of space here and we still want to have this space as the club starts to move down into impact now one of the key issues that many golfers have is that they can create width on the back swing with practice and with this kind of drill but as they start to move through the hips start to come forwards towards the ball and they block off this area that we want the hands to be moving through so you can create lots of width lots of time lots of space but then if you block it off in the downswing that’s going to be the issue so this is where we move on to the main part of the drill so rather than moving like this into impact with this hip coming forwards we’re going to create width we’re going to allow those arms to drop and then with the trail side with the trail foot the right foot for a right hander we’re just going to roll it into impact now what I’ve done here is I put an alignment stick down on the ground because I just want to get the feeling that I’m rolling off it just like like so not that I’m on my toe that I’m just moving onto my InStep through the point of impact now with this drill what you’ll notice is we have this width but if we just move those arms down and I roll off that alignment stick all this room all this room is still here that I can just pass my hands and my arms through as I then start to turn down towards the Target and it’s all of that room into which you can have the hands starting to move ahead rather than having to push forward because of those hips the fact that you can strike down on the ball cuz you’re not going to have to back up and away because as you move onto that InStep your weight pushes forward all of these things are possible when you create the space but all that space is Created from here and from here so width allow the arms to drop roll onto that InStep of the trail for that’s such a good strike don’t tell anyone by the way I was just saying this to King on my own these ions if you not checked out the main Channel where I do reviews of clubs I was testing these Dino Power Forge from Wilson the other day really good now for the advanced level of this drill I’ve set up here a gate so the ball here is sitting in between two tea markers now these are just rubber tea markers that I’m using because I’m on the map if I was on a grass range I’d be using a t and I’d just be having it tilted slightly away to match the angle of the shaft but anything you can create with a gate that’s not going to get damaged if this drill goes wrong that’d be wonderful because the final part of this and something which can help tie it all together is if you’ve got the width that club has been allowed to drop you’re moving onto the InStep you’ve created all this room you still want something to aim at you still want a feeling of having that club traveling a little bit straighter through the point of impact so with a gate all you need to do within your practice drill is roll off and just try and get that club passing through now I practice that without a golf ball and then I probably take it away when the golf ball is there just simply because with this drill you can get the feeling of having that club passing through the gate and whipping through but when you introduce a ball and put it in the middle of it all of a sudden your target orientation changes that g really is just to get the feeling of what it’s like to get that club moving on a neutral path so as soon as you’ve had a few practice Swings with that take it out you can still use the foot roll drill so for a drill like this really repetition is key very much a block practice at the range practicing your back G before taking it onto the golf course but if you found this useful and you want to continue your swing Quest check out these vide

  1. O I so wish I could or have the money to get over to England and get a few lessons from Pete you really do make it look simple mate. Love ya work big fella

  2. One of my favorite parts of swingquest is every video drop is a lovely reminder to keep practicing and engaging in swing thought
    Thanks Pete and team!

  3. Please do a video on the pros and cons of dropping then turning vs hip turn starting the swing. It seems like so many coaches are promoting the squatting and rotating of hips to pull the upper body through but your swing is simpler.

  4. I bet the Wilson Dynapower Forged are awesome. I have the D9 Forged from a couple years ago and love them.
