Hayden Springer shot a 59 on the first day of the John Deere Classic, only the 14th sub-60 score in PGA history.
In November of 2023, Springer tragically lost his 3-year-old daughter to complications from the genetic Trisomy 18 disorder.
Just a month later, the 27-year-old from Tennessee scored a top five finish at the PGA Tour Q School Final Qualifying and earned his first tour card for 2024.
Springer and his wife founded a non-profit in their daughter’s honor called Extra to Love.
At TPC Deere Run, Springer had eight birdies and two eagles, and set the course record for the front nine with 27. His shot of the day was a 55-yard pitch-in at 17.
Cameron Young shot an 11-under 59 two weeks prior to Springer, and Paul Goydos shot a 59 at Deere Run in 2010, not to diminish anything from Springer’s remarkable feat.
Especially considering he finished tied for tenth a week earlier, missed the previous six cuts before that and never shot lower than a 61 in his life.
Springer went into Friday with a two shot lead over Sami Valimaki.
