hi there greetings and salutations happy Independence Day week as that falls on I think Derek the and by the way my name is Jake query that’s Dereck Schultz this is the incredibly creatively and appropriately named quy and Schultz program here on the ISC Sports Network Derek um Independence Day 4th of July whichever way you want to call it to me falls on now the perfect day on a Thursday right yeah it’s summer Thanksgiving week this week correct you punt Friday I mean remember was it a couple of years I mean obviously within recently when Fourth of July fell on a Sunday and it’s just like H it’s a come on weekend you don’t want and then also you don’t want like I don’t know Tuesday or Wednesday is a little weird Monday’s fine because then it’s just right how Day weekend Thursday’s great because you punt the extra day Friday obviously same thing three-day weekend yeah you’re right if it’s on a Wednesday last year I guess it was a Wednesday and you just kind of get right back on it we’ve never really um you know my wife’s an RN so she works a lot of holidays and we very rarely I feel like do anything on the 4th of July but the fourcast looks it’s not supposed to be good right it’s all rainy and yeah not not great see that’s let me tell you why that’s good I I love the 4th of July as a kid I loved like the parades in the neighborhood I as an adult I’ve been in the Lebanon parade a number of times as a younger adult we would go to our family friends Friends The Duncan in Greensburg and be by the pool uh I loved going to rivy when I was in college when I worked there and playing water polo that was like the big event it’s open on Fourth right yeah JCC is I know all of it it’s great and I loved going downtown for the downtown fireworks show yeah but and I know that people think I’m unamerican when I say this like your backyard does not need to be a downtown fireworks show you want to go out with some sprinklers maybe a couple bottle rockets I get it people that are letting off like full military aerial bombs for 10 straight hours that’s why I’m glad it rains so that these jackasses can just like you know not not worry about it if you’re shooting mortars from your two-bedroom Ranch in cambi Indiana that’s a little much well how about how about if you’re shooting mortars from your two-bedroom Ranch in a subdivision that’s setting off car alarms well that yeah everybody in the neighborhood is on the neighborhood Facebook page like hey jackass I just use cambi as an ex anywhere Avon uh Southport you know whatever um yeah you shouldn’t be doing that like my my cousin and I love it I love the Fourth of July I love the United States I love the Liberty Bell you name it right my cousins in Upstate New York had like four acres and my uncle was a pyro and he would get like major fireworks but their their next neighbor was a half a mile away and we’d shoot off fireworks back this was you know 20 30 years ago and that’s fine cuz it was wide open burn off an eyebrow yeah my my dad actually threw in a gross of bottle rockets which is 140 4 is a gross and then said run it was the end of the night and they all went at once and you know um he didn’t mow the grass all the way in the back we had we had the grass in one spot where we shot off fireworks and so I’m going through the high grass and I felt like I was in Nom or something because it was going by and one of them caught um caught my head and singed off half of my eyebrows so I had half an eyebrow pretty cool yeah yeah it was not a good look was on your lazy eye okay enough all right right it’s a fair question let’s start the show come on okay let’s go uh the Pacers have locked in Obi toppen for four more years at a price tag of $60 million that comes out to 15 million annually if you are a quick mathematician like myself not bad um but Derek not bad in terms of the deal or my math skills uh both okay thank you not bad in terms of everything I mean I I I think this was a deal that was good for the Pacers it’s obviously it’s good for Obi I mean you think about where he was last year right now the Knicks gave up on him they trained him for two twos I mean that’s that’s basically releasing him right they they gave up and he was a poor fit there I I think he knew that I think the Nick knew that I that was a marriage that never made sense and here with the Pacers he fit like a glove and and I’ll say this Jake you know me I’m I mean I’m very rarely wrong on this show um I thought Obie was a jumper and a dunker that’s what I thought I was like Obie toppin can catch Ali oops that is the extent of what he can do he can’t really do anything else people are like well he’s developing an outside shot I said he can catch catch dunks and jump um and he showed himself to be a lot more than that um his three-point shooting was fantastic he was a 40% three-point shooter this year and that’s a big sample you know he takes a lot of Threes um he was a key cog of perhaps the NBA’s best bench he was terrific in the playoffs he had 11 games in double figures in the playoffs Derek the everything that Obi toppen turned out to be in getting him from New York offset what everything we thought Chris Copeland was going to be when they got him from New York yeah that’s a deep cut but yeah I mean it kind of that same sort of I mean if you’re taking Nick to Pacer right the same sort of um comparison but but I really thought Obie was a one-trick pony just an athlete and a dunker and he’s more than look he’s he’s not a good Defender he’s probably never going to be a good Defender but when you’re just asked to be a bench piece that’s all you’re asked to be and I think we’re still looking at these contracts like we were look at a contract 10 15 years ago $15 million a year seems to be an absurd amount of money but if you’re an NBA starter your bottom floor is 20 mil it’s crazy so a bench player making 15 that that’s about right that tracks then you think about Aon neith who they locked in last year that was a sometimes it’s timing cap goes up contracts go up right Andrew Nim hard is going to get paid big time but here’s the thing that I mentioned yesterday on the radio show and and I want to go back over this cuz I I I want to try to more eloquently say what I was trying to deliver and and I think this will make sense to you the NBA today and the NBA and this all started Derek when you and I were doing the Radio Show in LeBron James right before we did the show together when LeBron James went through you know the decision right we started to see the influence of a at the professional level guys that instead of growing up as you know died in the wo competitors of one another we started to see in the NBA guys who have grown up in the AA era where you’re switching teams a lot throughout the course of tournaments and if you can’t beat them join them and Etc and that kind of became the NBA free agency game so that led to the lifestyle cities and the big Market MoneyWise being able to put together super teams two or three guys I mean obviously the Miami Heat did it then we saw it with golden state Phoenix did it but when you do that it feels like now we are at the point where these super teams and this conglomeration of free agencies and getting two or three big players together Philly’s going to try it right now with Paul George going over there you’ve got about a two-year window where if it doesn’t work in that two years then you got to blow it up and and just reset the advantage for an Indiana is that they are ahead of the curve in terms of because they’ve been forced to do it this way growing things organically getting seeds planting them allowing them to water fertilizing them allowing them to grow and doing so by getting guys on value contracts or first contracts letting them gel and mold together accentuating it with a couple of pieces where you hit on a trade like Obby toppen or you hit or Pascal SE yakum or you hit on a draft pick that pans out like Andrew nard that’s a later pick and a value but that gives you a four or fiveyear window as opposed to a two or threeyear window and I think it allows for and leads to a lot more optimism about the future of the Indiana Pacers than probably a lot of franchises feel yeah the way that I look at it is that I think you know with somebody like Halburn who’s signed to a max deal you have like a five or six year window right uh maybe even longer than that but it’s going to be separated into mini Windows because the seaka windows probably only two years so you have this window now which is two years and then whatever happens happens and then probably you’re going to have to find somebody else then you see if instead of seum you replace cakam with the combo of madin hardi or somebody that’s not even you know Fury I mean I don’t know somebody that’s not even on the roster a young player that we’re not thinking about right now so I I think you’re just kind of fracturing it into multiple windows um the Pacers are in a good spot because I know that it’s frustrating to see the Knicks go out and make big moves and Philly go out and big make big moves but the Pacers didn’t really need to make a big their big move was just retaining seak really and and retaining toen that’s the thing is that this roster I you can say the Pacers weren’t aggressive and it’s like well they were aggressive they were aggressive during the regular season in getting seak and then once they did that they’re kind of good to go right yeah I mean it’s all it’s all Maan and Walker and maybe nard as well even though I think we have a more defined ceiling on what n hard’s going to be than we Walker we just have no idea and I think mathine we have a little bit of an idea but this is the biggest year of his life coming up here I mean mathine is going to tell us if there’s something there with mathine it’s going to show now right uh they can’t wait any longer and you forget about mine that’s the funny thing right yeah because he got last year and he wasn’t really part of the postseason March but that that’s where the Improvement was going to come in you know we have Vince and Shawn Walker here and Vince is a big Pacers fan and Shawn grew up a front running Bulls fan but they were talking about the Pacers and kind of the offseason and Shawn was complaining about the fact they weren’t doing anything and they got lucky in the playoffs and Vince is saying look man they they won four out of five against the Bucs in the off season and they did what they could and all of that um the Pacers Improvement is going to have to come within that that’s the bottom line if if Maan is something or ER is something or nart is you know what he showed us in the Knicks series then I think the Pacers can really contend but if they’re not then this is they’re they’re back to where they were they’re they’re stuck as a four to five seed pretty good team in the East that can win one series I will say I mean in the East you’ve got Boston right yeah obviously if Milwaukee’s healthy you have to look at them although outside of yanus and Damen Lillard who who’s probably aging a little bit they got to recalibrate right they’ve got some issues youis and Yannis heal jannis is pretty tough to contend with Philly is the one that that I I will say this is what’s going to be interesting to me Derek this is the first time and I know saying something and and exercising are two different things but I think we know this I think Paul George is a good guy I think he’s a wonderful talent but I don’t think that Paul George ever has had it in him to be the guy he wants to be the guy but he’s not the guy and when was in Indiana he was the guy and you saw what happened when moments were clutched where is he where’d he go and with the clippers for the most part he was the guy and you saw what happened right they ran it back several times and it fell up it fell short now he goes to Philly where he’s not the guy he is the accentuation piece and if he is willing to accept that going into it then he’s a pretty darn good accentuation piece because he can do a lot of different things you but if you are relying on him to be the guy that carries you in the final step you’re in trouble but if you are allowing him to help you get to the final step and then iner Maxi’s the guy that you turn it over to Philly’s going to be tough to contend with if they all stay healthy and beid staying healthy is a huge question mark but you got to put Philly in the conversation and then I think Orlando is is is interesting yeah Orlando’s in the same but but to me it’s funny because everybody talks about these other teams and then New York is going to be really good because you forget they have julus Randle coming back and everybody talks about these teams in the East and nobody talks about IND Indiana and I’m like they just were in the Eastern Conference Finals and probably played Boston I know they got swept but more competitively than did Dallas for the most part yeah you know they were in the Conference Finals which is the final four teams right but you know what their NBA title playoff odds are not that Vegas is the end all Beall but I found this interesting you mean in terms of how many are how many are in front of them what what rank they are there are 30 teams in the NBA what are their ranked odds for the NBA title 15th they’re in a 15th Place tie with Orlando and I think and I think Cleveland I think it’s Cleveland Cleveland’s another one that know it’s kind of like the Pacers like they’re good but they need to elevate to the next level what the NBA is doing now Derek and it’s a good model what the NBA is doing now or seeing is due to the salary cap and other such things it’s becoming a little bit like the NFL where every team feels they have a shot going in and there’s a lot more parody than there was you know you’re the one you always point out I mean how many teams we went through a period there where like three franchises won a title in 20 years 1980 to 2016 basically the Cavs title with LeBron I mean you had I think you had seven or eight NBA champions it was the Bulls it was the Rockets it was the lawyers it was the spur yeah I mean it was the Pistons Pistons won three um and now you’ve had a different champion in each of the last six years right since the Warriors I mean the Warriors won in 22 but since that last run with curry and clay and Durant speaking of which um do you know the one guy in the NBA that everywhere he goes people think he’s a missing piece and I’m like I think he’s the most overrated player ever and everybody thinks I’m crazy I think he’s a very good player Harris huh to Harris well that’s one of them Chris Paul yeah Chris Paul’s gonna be 55 years old and people like oh my gosh did you hear Phoenix resigned Chris Paul he’s a good player he’s a very good player don’t get me wrong yeah but he’s been to one finals right yeah he had that one year in Phoenix where he really was a Difference Maker for that young Phoenix remember we thought they were loaded though we thought that window was wide open for Phoenix and look and they they put their eggs in the Bradley Beal and Durant basket and ended up not is Durant is that for other teams is the Durant deal done I mean in other words like is the oh my gosh we got KD bring on the Championships he’s like a fringe top 10 player now say um but you make a good point about Paul George you know if Paul George is your number three then he’s the best number three in NBA history if he’s your number one you’re not you’re going to be the six seed and you’re gonna get beat in six games in the first round right because that’s where he is did you just acknowledge that I made a good point no you do you occasionally you do on the show yeah I think being back on the radio again has helped and having other people around you like like jmv usually gives good takes and the Morning Show you were with with Kevin for a while Kevin usually gives good takes I think just through osmosis you’ve got and from being with me every week you’ve gotten a little bit better like when we first started in 2011 it was just it was crazy like off-the-wall stuff that you would say like what and now you’re just um you’re you’re a lot better with it 2011 so it’s been thir what 13 years yeah yeah next month it’ll be 13 years I mean think about this the decision for LeBron feels like a 100 years ago right that happened the year before radi that’s Manning was still a cult for God’s sake come on think about how long ago that was let’s let’s just real quick the Pacers are basically done right I in terms of moves you mean in terms of moves that matter yeah I I I think they need a third Center and I think they’re going to bring back James Johnson they have they have I think they have three roster spots so so I think the three roster spots are FY I think he’s the only draft pick that makes it a Backup backup big who knows I I heard Cody Zeller be thrown out there like veterans minimum level third Center and and James Johnson for the veteran pres that’s probably right although I do think that with the draft picks a lot of it depends on what happens with their two-way contracts but I think Oscar sheway probably gets retained right yeah and then well they’ve already given a qualifying offer they gave a qualifying offer to Quinton Jackson now both of those guys are still RFA so they have to they have but the question is then do they one of the draft picks does one of the draft picks make it if those two spots are I don’t think so what what’s interesting is that Newton and um Enrique what’s the the guy’s name from akan Enrique well no he’s got a last name Freeman um they’re old you know Newton’s 23 and Freeman will be 24 I think in a month or maybe Newton will be 24 whatever it is um but those look like frean by the way is a great story I mean you know basically a walk-on he tried out yeah you know for a Mac team and he was a a great student he got an academic scholarship to akan decided to go there and then thought well I’ll try for the basketball team and becomes our all time lead rebounder boom you’ve got a 73 wingspan that helps um but I think those are you know Isaiah Wong won’t be back Jaylen Smith signed with the bulls McDermot won’t be back um there there’s you know they brought back seum they brought back Topp in I I think you’re pretty much you’re pretty much done right I think um that Mojave King might be another two-way might be the third two-way deal desert right and then who’s the other Kendall Brown is right this is where I need Tony East like you have like exhibit 10 contracts to like you have all these things that are part of your roster that isn’t really your roster proper right where you can have players sheway is intriguing to me because the Pacers struggled in the terms of rebounding yeah and he is allegedly a rebounding machine certainly he was in college um if there’s something there wouldn’t they have seen it by now it it takes a minute I mean if your ceiling is backup big and right now you’re how old is sheway 22 he’s got to be at least that right yeah um and right now you’re a Backup backup level big it’s not like you have to ascend that much higher to get to where your ceiling is so I I think they’re pretty happy with where he is I mean they gave him a qualifying offer so they they obviously want to keep him around um but this is basically what the roster is and I still think Jake where are the minutes for jarus Walker right now now see what you want about top like I don’t think them signing toppen means that they hate jerus Walker but jayen Jaylen Smith’s minutes the rotation that Jaylen Smith got now go to jarus Walker okay but still I mean you’re talking about really um 11 guys and at most you’re probably gonna play 10 jar to me jarus Walker reminds me Derek I mean a terrible analogy because they’re it’s apples and oranges I totally understand but when I play high school basketball and I mean I was I mean I think you know I was a moderately skilled player but when I got into situations of open gym with the starting Varsity guys that were out there and I was a sophomore and their seniors I would get the ball and and start thinking so fast that I would turn the ball over I would I would travel because the game it was like I was trying to overthink it sure and jerus Walker looks that way to me still and the Pacers either one of these two things is true and I don’t know which it is I have a feeling I know which it is but the Indiana Pacers either truly believe that jarus Walker is about to Blossom and show why he was a top 10 pick or they saw that you know what maybe this guy doesn’t have it but if we can talk him up enough then we can retain value and flip him into something else I think it’s the first I don’t think it’s the second but the reality is that at some point it’s going to have to show now I look at guys like Austin cocher Jeff Foster those are guys that were drafted and played basically no minutes as a rookie and you thought what in the world and then they turned out to be really good situational players for the Pacers for a long time so maybe that’s the situation here we have you know we got to wait and see I mean here’s here’s your 10 right halberton nard n Smith SE yakum Turner McConnell maen Obi I I think Shephard and Jackson oh yeah for sure right with the way that you played so so Walker’s the 11th there and then you’re down to the dnp CD guys which would be fthy and James Johnson and your backup Backup backup big I mean maybe your third big would get a little bit of of spin but for the most part those are dnp CD guys Spin and people don’t say do not play coach’s decision yeah did not play dnp CD guys and I don’t think you’re not going to want a top 10 pick in his second year to be a dmpc a lot no you’re right you’re going to want him to play do not play play coach decision and spin is rotation we’ll see if that ends up up happening but that’s your NBA roster by way we’ve got to get to sweaty I get sweaty okay so the you should see me when I work out the goalkeeper is inbounding is that what happened yeah so he’s like bouncing the ball about to kick it and and basically once he kicks it they probably blow the whistle and say that the game is over because they’re in deep into stoppage time and theor took it and then um you know it’s not that just that he stole it he kicked it in the goal you you have to make the goal as well and it wasn’t necessarily an easy shot but what a neat play it was it was cool play really really cool very rare to see for sure yeah so that is our so you know this is the style now we’ll talk about it in the third segment getting back to um the Pacers in their draft class you know um Johnny fthy of of Kansas one of the youngest players in the draft 19 he was born in December of 2004 so he’s even younger than Vince um projected by some as a top 20 Level pick he was a green room in VT right and he goes to the Pacers at 35 69 can shoot catch and shoot not a great athlete but can grow as a scorer as a Defender I mean he makes a lot of sense to the Pacers and a guy that can’t play right now but can in the future you shelf him a little bit right and you see if you allow him to grow this is a guy that that is from Australia grew up in Melbourne um went to Kansas and I think towards the end of the season at Kansas really started to flourish a little bit and feeling more comfortable offensively uh needs Room to Grow no question about it but the Pacers have that room to allow it right this is the benefit of you know very quickly think about in the last couple of years when it’s like man they got to draft a a lottery pick that hopefully is a guy that they’re going to center around and they did it with maen and then the next year with Walker and immediately and obviously it’s the other pieces Halbert and Topp and the other pieces we talked about that that elevated them but now they’re in a situation where they’re deep enough that they have this luxury to be able to afford now they did move up a spot to be able to take fury because it was just cash right yeah but I think it was his shooting ability I think it was his ability to shoot from outside and you know spread the floor out stretch the floor out that they really like but again we’re talking about three years down the road most likely he does he break rotation at times maybe we didn’t think Ben Shepard would see the number of minutes that he did true part of that’s because of mine’s ill you know injury but uh nonetheless it kind of falls under the category of why not right yeah and and I think uh I think he’ll make the NBA roster I feel pretty good about that and it’s just a guy that you you got arguably potentially a top 20 tent at 35 and all you had to do was give up CC I mean it’s not that big of a deal cash considerations that’s all they did to trade up so CC goes even before July 1 and then it just recycles for the next year so you’re not giving up any future assets I mean cc is just it’s just what it is it’s cash considerations um so I think they’re in a good spot there how do you the cash considerations how does that work like does Kevin Pritchard call Herb Simon he’s like hey can we just take like 780 grand out of the account here and move it over there there’s a certain allotment that you have that you can use via trade and then it recycles every year it’s kind of like your H HSA as far as I understand it are they like we’ve got to get roll over we’ve got to get rid of this because it doesn’t roll over right not roll I know the Clipper stuff didn’t work out I know he’s not viewed as a winner there are lots of guys in the Hall of Fame that aren’t going to I mean James Harden is going to be a Hall of Famer not winner Dwight Howard’s going to be in the Hall of Fame not a winner there are lots of other guys Paul George Derek off the top of your head career earnings go oh god um after this deal after this deal go after this deal it’ll be I’m writing it down 485 million really you you already know it yes 585 million okay $518 million I was close 40 million it’s not bad right $ 518 million insane half a billion dollars for a guy that on draft night I don’t know what your reaction was everybody’s like what they took a guy with two first names have to beat himno State what um as much as he’s criticized there um so these I need to get I need to get more sun here but once I have more sun in this region and then on the back as well once I have more sun over here and that blends in more with my you know carelly skin color I think it’ll be a good look but like I don’t think these are too short do you do you really think these are too short I haven’t said anything in three minutes does that tell you anything is that a bit of an indicator this is kind of the style though okay let me show you mine okay and I also could use a little Sun but watch out cuz your heart thanks if you fall that might be a doing a second year of NBA Summer League as well I Ben Shepard was surprised by that yeah I mean the more playing time than marrier Shepard’s probably too good for it but who cares you have the opportunity to play I remember covering summer league when Jonathan Bender and Ron ESS were playing I mean I remember yeah Roy Hibert being on the summer league team and all that uh training camp will begin Saturday in Indie we’re taping this right now on Tuesday and the actual play will begin July 12th in Vegas they’re going to play Brooklyn uh Brooklyn thank you NBA TV so good for those two I think summer league would be super fun to go to yeah you know Scott Agnes our Buddy goes out there every year and and covers it and um seems like a now are there is there just one League now there was Orlando in Las Vegas is it all in Las Vegas now no I I think it’s still the same because don’t the Knicks and some other teams go to Orlando that maybe right I think that’s right I maybe I’m wrong about that uh Mackenzie Holmes so from Purdue to IU returning to women’s basketball she’s the all-time leading scorer in IU Women’s basketball history a first team All-American led the hooers to several deep tournament runs including the sweet 16 where they gave South Carolina a great fight this year and they went to the Elite 8 uh where they lost to Arizona does that sound right Arizona no South Carolina right no they lost South Carolina this year they they made an elite eight run a couple of years ago and I think they lost to Arizona okay I think um if I remember right but 23 years old and she’s had a bunch of knee injuries so she had surgery and so she’s not playing this year she’s technically a member of the Seattle Storm um but she’ll be fully healed by their 20125 season so she that’s August and you know football’s ramping up and it feels like it gets lost in the sh a little bit us open’s cool like ESPN dedicates this entire week to tennis basically um and I don’t know wimbl i feel ya 4th is my least favorite holiday im glad its raining too lol stops the dummies from shooting fireworks off all day long this year
