After a memorable week of golf in both Pennsylvania and Canada it’s back to regular programming this week with the PGA Tour in Ohio for Jack’s tournament, the Memorial. Meanwhile, LIV Golf visits Texas and the LPGA heads to one of the most interesting courses on the schedule at Seaview Bay in New Jersey. Plus, the best men and women in Europe play a mixed event in Sweden at the Volvo Car Scandinavian Mixed.

[Music] your golf ball is the most technologically advanced or it’s not your golf ball is either the most consistent or it’s not it’s the most trusted or it’s not the fact is it’s either Titleist the best performing golf ball in the world or it’s not prove it for yourself tidalist the number one ball in golf what will you play I’ve never seen anything like it before to attempt to hit the ball out of there is pure Madness the winner of the gold medal and the champion gol for of the year is Cameron Smith this is the one that I’ve always wanted to win since I was a little kid so it just feels pretty amazing to be able to get it done today uh it’s amazing that it’s my destiny to be the first doy to win just incredible hello and welcome to episode 66 of playing from the tips golf Australia magazine podcast that explores the world of professional golf bringing you all the pertinent information and some borderline expert tips Jimmy Emanuel in the host chair again as we reflect on a brilliant women’s major and look ahead to golf at Jack’s Place The Return of live as well as LPGA DP World Tour and ladies European tour action for what I believe is the first time in show history we are doing this without our pillar of the so-called experts so he’s no longer a pillar if he’s not present MH but anyway Rod muray is taking a week off remarkably doing so after a win last week when he has a rare chance to Crow but in his place The Man Behind the Aussie golf for blog and creator of tster the online golf tipping platform so he might actually have some credibility welcome Michael Green hello guys nice to nice to be here thanks for inviting me back again exactly I think you’re actually quite popular last time you’re the Super Sub yeah so it is a Super Sub you and Tony weeck have both actually we quality you and Porter brings nothing but you uh the other voice you hear while little Ry might be out there was no chance we’d be missing both regulars so the man who was self-described last week as a bon vant will surely be smarting that Rod has tipped two recent winners who else but Adrien log uh thank you Jimmy what is a bon vant in your mind it’s just someone who appreciates I’m drinking International roast coffee here so this is not yeah and you show up in a beanie looking like a hoodlum so I don’t know about that yeah uh as we like to do each week we reflect on the week before before we jump into the future any highlights from last week’s golf yeah obviously yucas Sasso yeah uh I remember I think talking about on on the other podcast the uh how impressive she was after she won an Olympic and felt at that time that she was somebody who was going to stick around and do this sort of thing again and here she’s done it again she’s been showing signs she hasn’t performed as well as she would like no doubt in regular tour events but it seems like she’s one of those players where the greater the challenge the the better she plays and uh we all know she’s capable of it and she did it again it’s great it’s good to see um I hope she just goes from strength to strength I love watching her play oting for Mii though disappointing for Mii she really she was in control without really being in the lead for a lot of it she she was playing really good golf and just doing her thing and then it just Lancaster just got her basically in the end but you know yucas Sasso is the first woman from the Philippines to win the US Women’s Open and the first woman from Japan to win the US Women’s Open yes she’s yeah she switched sides there didn’t she a couple years ago amazing yeah well done greeny any highlights from you last week well I was thinking about Adrian’s uh little preview of Lancaster last week and did did you mention the difficult part three I’m Mak sure the 12 yeah did I did I said there was potential for a big score there yeah because I mean is it no is it no one throughout it seemed like a brutal hole I mean uphill over water and bunkers everywhere and it’s difficult no doubt there were some big scores there in 2015 as well but also you just look at that flyover of it and you think oh dear like and it was just very shallow green and I I didn’t realize it had such a false front on it too and they shaved the rough going down to the to the creek but it was it was also just genuine US Open conditions it was that thud when the ball hit the green and it was just it was everything and Nelly of course made a 10 that Nelly was not completely uh away from fault that bunker shot where she hit it out of the back in the water was just that was just a ER that was just not the shot to hit but yeah it was quite remarkable that that hole yeah her tournament was over before it even really started it was done that was it um but Robert McIntyre obviously a bit of a highlight I think for everybody I think I don’t think there’s a person in the world who doesn’t like Bob True another good golf course too both exactly all the didn’t matter where what you were switching on to it was a shame that the Canadian open was running almost exactly overlapped the women’s uh US Open but if you were flicking between the two um the the golf course both golf courses looked magnificent on TV really good wouldn’t it be good if we could get PJ tour events finishing on a Saturday when there’s a women’s major on yeah just yeah just change it up anyway uh speaking of last week both rod and I remarkably tipped lorri caner to win in Germany so we also had four top 10 that’s AB I was stunned when I went back to check the spreadsheet to tally everything up but there we go apparently we know what we’re doing uh so that takes us to 13 wins and 72 top 10 for the year which we remind you each week are numbers unrivaled by any golf tipping podcast 66 episodes into existence that wow yeah there you go that’s a new angle on it yeah that’s true we dominate that space we do dominate this currently next week we’re probably out uh onto this week and it is signature event time on the PGA tour with this week’s the Memorial tournament presented by workday that is an uncapped t on the memorial that’s an official designation on all scheduling really uh log you’re going to take us through it tell us a little bit about golf at Jack’s Place yeah so the Memorial tournament presented by workday uh workday as I’m sure you know Jimmy is an American ond demand financial management human Capital Management and student information software uh vendor of course I do yep uh I just taking a step back and looking at this tournament it’s all about Jack’s Legacy and he keeps I think each year keeps layering in more Legacy and uh in in a sense I I feel like it’s protecting against the the time eventually when Jack’s no longer with us and I wonder what happens to the memorial Jimmy is it going to go the way of the baron Nelson and just become the work day something or the Arnold Palmer’s hanging in there yeah there still the Arnold Palmer Invitational there a stat much though do you reckon oh that doesn’t go anyway and what can jack do now to protect the legacy of the memorial so that it Remains the memorial presented by workday and not just the workday it’ll always be the memorial you reckon yeah absolutely like they do the honoring of the of the people each year it’s got a whole thing it’s that’s right I mean been very smart with that just layering in ceremony after ceremony and tradition after tradition to sort of uh make it not a normal event right down to the milkshakes in the lock room the players apparently got really good milkshakes in the locker room anyway the uh uh it is another fake Invitational like the Arnold Palmer um there’s no real inv let’s move it’s a signature event so that’s how the fields decided it’s not an Invitational although they’re not calling it Invitational now I’ll be fair with that but it’s not called an invitation I know but still I’m I’m just not happy with the whole Invitational scene on the PJ I think you’re the only person who cares Perhaps Perhaps GRE you care uh yeah I can see where log’s coming from on this one a little bit Yeah you yeah I agree I agree a little bit I do I’m sorry I’m sorry Jimmy thank you for your support that’s all right last time you’re on it’s played of course at mfield Village uh which was built in 1974 uh it was built by Jack in association with Desmond mad uh Nicholas was only 34 years old at the time so it was a little bear CB at the time and muad had a lot to do with this I think in the early days but underrated I think very underrated um really interesting character and did some amazing things in Golf Course architecture many of many of which we would look frown upon today uh weird shapes and things that he built but it was a time in Golf Course architecture I think where it needed experimentation we had this stuff that could move land and muad was the guy to sort of push the boundaries of that and uh this was a course which I think uh had enough balance of needing to be more of a mainstream venue that some of the more extreme Desmond mad stuff got pulled in a little bit and obviously Jack’s influence there but over the years it’s been redone and tweaked to such an extent that it’s it’s all I think you could say it’s all Nicholas now um but nonetheless uh a very interesting piece of land this I think Jimmy is the quintessential bunkers in the rough golf course there’s no course I think that exemplifies and bunker in the sky bunker in the rough and in the sky yep yeah more than this golf course and you can’t help I think John hugan always says this you can’t help but wonder what it would look like if they just mowed all that yeah just widen the whole thing and had the bunkers sitting in the Fairway where balls could roll into them John hugan Memorial Honore and some might add indeed yes he was yeah uh last year last year I think yeah he was honored yeah uh and some short grass around the greens it could be an absolutely spectacular Golf Course um and worthy perhaps even of a major if I think if they just change the mowing lines a little bit which is what Jack had in mind for it when he built it he wanted it to be a potential major venue and I think it’s it’s been a President’s Cup V President’s Cup V yeah uh and uh obviously uh home to this tournament uh couple of Australians in the field uh it’s also home to Jason day home course famously but famously infamously perhaps doesn’t ever seem to perform well here um Cam Davis is the other Australian playing and uh I just think this course really seems to suit him but um we’ll see um I think he wouldn’t be a bad pick uh the defending Champion is Victor hovland and I just really think this is a really great Victor hland course I think I picked him last year I think so yeah and uh I’m going to pick him again okay seems reasonable GRE some thoughts from you on who might be a winner yeah I I agree with you like it’s one of those courses almost I look at the photos and I think wow it’s almost like AI generated photos for some of these um holes as well just describe come up with a great looking golf course with bunkers everywhere and on top of each other and AI would generate it it’s a golf course shaped golf course yeah yes exactly um there’s a lot of good names that have played well here over the years um Ricky F has played well I I noticed as well and Patrick Klay done well Billy H’s actually won here yeah even though he’s got some patchy form um he’s a possibly good fit um I must admit I was kind of going back his hisis form and that big win is Zander chule I think he’s going to be my pick this week um you never quite know the psychology of coming off a I never quite know the psychology of going a week before a major Y what plays are thinking whether they’re just tweaking or and coming off for major as well a little bit in Xander’s situation um uh but it’s just his forms remarkable and um he’s actually been pretty good here top 20s pretty much all every time so he’s he’s my pick yeah solid I’m going to go with the guy that you derided his chance I’m going to go with Jason day wow yeah mhm rested since the PGA obviously he’s a member he knows the golf course he just he’s going to one day figure it out in a tournament like I’m sure he goes out there and shoots amazing scores the only thing that’s kind of lacking at the moment stats wise is his ball striking a little bit but he’s driving it well enough for that to be on the improve and I think Comfort might just actually suit him and there’s been some good results I think he’s he’s close yeah he’s close to winning something and so may as well be here the baggy clothes I think look will look good in situ true at U mfield Village if he wears those like there’s something about that aesthetic I suit of like rain pants if he spills a milkshake on himself he’ll be fine just wash it off fine yeah yeah it’s got that like hazy sort of air and the thick Lush rough tiger won there a lot in the baggy clothes thick baggy clothes suits it who won the first Memorial uh taking that answer from anybody in the class oh I’m going to know as soon as you tell me Roger Malby yes yeah anyway uh let’s stay in the US this time live golf Houston which is the circuit’s first event in a month which kind of always baffles when that happens but anyway uh it’s a familiar venue although not for live golf once known as the Redstone golf club The Golf Club of Houston’s tournament course hosted the PJ tour is Houston open for the better part of 20 years on uh with a golf course designed by ree Jones with a little bit of help from David Toms pretty standard sort of tournament venue for America kind of not too dissimilar to mfield in terms of big white sand bunkers long lots of rough plenty of water tree lined all that sort of stuff and nearly 7,500 yards of golf course usual field uh for live with Brooks keper a last up live winner in Singapore uh and he had a decent showing at the PGA cam Smith sort of shown some form before the PGA where he didn’t really finish that strongly his Ripper GC team trying to make it three wins in a row uh also a standout player to watch here will be Richard Bland who continues one of the more unbelievable late career runs having won the kitchena Senior PGA Championship a little over a week ago uh and then you’ve also got interestingly Anthony Kim Ian palter Matt Jones Phil Mickelson and Paul Casey who all won the Houston open at this venue oh wow so there you go okay that’s Kim yeah Anthony Kim I think this is the last place Anthony Kim Won a golf tournament all right I remember watching the highlights of this then when when he won it was um I remember Matt Jones hold the bunker shot to get into Augusta the next week cuz this used to the Houston open used to be the week before the master and the idea was the golf club of Houston built themselves up to be the closest thing to so that they could all go and prepare mikkelson was a multiple winner here as well I think wasn’t he uh no because he won the other time he won the week was the Bell southc south wind but yeah those guys all that’s quite remarkable to have that many of them but anyway uh so usual sort of characters all that sort of stuff usual sort of tournament golf course actually be one of the sort of better better venues I think they’ll play this year it’s familiar it’s built for tournament golf kind of thing uh greeny let’s go to you get some thoughts and a tip yeah again I mean this one I think of all of the tips today is very much a guess in some ways um I just I kept going back to John Ram but he’s he was so disappointing at the PGA and I’m just not sure where he is at the moment in terms of thinking about I’m assuming he’s in the major next week is he yeah yeah the open um but I’m going to go with Dean bur because he keeps notching up high finishes on live tour um and he had a top 20 finish at the PGA as well I think um his golf was very good at the moment and um he’s my pick for the week anyway that’s a real Michael green tip can I tell you very thoughtful it’s like it’s thoughtful researched like if I was thre in a few stats there about if I was to describe playing golf like Dean berm wouldn’t just it wouldn’t be too far yeah yeah I Flinch a little bit at Dean bur’s just the sound of his name now because of Aro White’s commentary and and how he sort of announces it all the time with too much drama it really I just I’m so over it I know all right tell us who’s going to win then John Ram I I was I was very worried when you started going down that Ram Trail there greeny I thought you were going to steal my pick there but yeah I look John Ram super disappointed in his performance in that major he’ll be he’ll have a bit of a chip on his shoulder I think and he knows his course so there’s something there’s something really ticking in joh r at the moment and it’s going to show up at an event and he’s just going to find it and it’s just going to be unbelievable yeah it’s exactly what I was thinking I think he’s he’s angry and uh want get in the way of angry John R it could be it could be the US open at Pinehurst The Perfect Storm yeah uh I’m going to go with uh Mark Hayes’s favorite player and Patrick Reed oh okay uh lives in Texas we all know about it this is the kind of golf course he plays well he’s been playing pretty good golf of L he yeah yeah yeah yeah sort of Forgotten man of yeah he really is he’s one of he just kind of PLS along he has some good results there and he’s a bit forgotten but I think I wish he’d come good again yeah I liked it when good when he’s playing good absolutely Titleist is the number one ball in golf yes being number one is a number and more players trust the prov1 or prov1x than all other golf balls combined but being number one is more than a number it’s a mindset it’s a Relentless mission to design and manufacture the best performing golf balls in the game so you can chase whatever your number one is titlist the number one ball in golf next the LPGA rolls into New Jersey for the shopright LPGA classic presented by ASA shopr right is of course log an American retailers Cooperative of supermarkets with stores in Six States I knew that they would be Connecticut Delaware Maryland New Jersey New York and Pennsyl Pennsylvania yeah I think I’ve been to six of those I think I’ve been to a shop right I assume I’ve been to a shop right anyway far more exciting than the sponsors at least in this country C viw golf’s Bay course will see the competitive return of Ky Webb amongst eight aies saw this so Webb’s going to play some golf she always was going to play some golf this year I spoke to her sort of latish last year um and she said she’s always going to play a little bit she’s just not sure where um she doesn’t want to play too much cuz once she starts to play too much she gets competitive with it and wants to really work hard at it that’s not what she’s looking for anymore um I do believe she’s going to play the LPGA teams event with Sarah Jane Smith in the coming weeks as well good okay yeah uh se you itself has some serious designer chops so Lancaster excuse me architect William Flynn designed the Pines course while the bay is the work of Donald Ross and Hugh Wilson of mar Fame uh they actually used a composite of the two for Sam sne to win his first major at the PGA in I think 948 or something like that so there you go uh it’s sort of marshy land uh it’ll be a lot more gentle than last week’s uh golf for these players double digits under par generally wins two-time Australian Open winner Ashley bu high is the defending champion and K’s joined by Hannah green Grace Kim Steph kiraku Sarah Kemp hir nid car Davidson and Robin Choy Yuka Sasso will back up her second US Women’s Open win as the headliner in the field and greeny who’s going to win uh it’ll be Marina Alex or jedy Shin do you like that confidence I do like that conf we need one pick I’m afraid yeah well no Rod likes to tip two people he likes to go oh yeah and it’s still not allowed it’s still not allowed cuz I only write down one so like and that’s yeah I mean to be honest I think they’ll be around the mark those two I think Jenny Shin is my pick um had a pretty good final round last week um and not many did at the US Women’s Open so um she’s finished in the top 10 the last two tournaments here and um yeah I’m going with her over Marina Alex I mean they they’ both got really good um records here Jenny Shin’s my pick uh look granny I I don’t I don’t want to tell you how to pick you know but I’ve think you’re about to I’ve been sucked into this Jenny Shin business a few times on this show and she’s disappointed every time she’s had like one win I think in one career win and I I might have picked her on this show last time as well didn’t go well oh okay all right well you know what I’m talking about then all well then who are you picking if Jenny Shin’s not going to win uh this greeny raised this earlier that this week after a major thing is a really interesting d you just don’t know what to make of it who played well last week is maybe they’re out for like a Hannah green might be out to like improve upon what she did last week cuz she’d be a little bit disappointed but then also they’re so tired after a tax tournament particularly last week take it out of you yeah uh anyway I I just think this is the sort of time that uh a certain Canadian Brooke M Henderson yes tends to strike and uh I quite like her on this golf course as well so that’s my Pi do you know what the m stands for margarite McKenzie okay very Canadian that is very Canadian yeah mckeny Henderson yeah okay there you go despite your slander of Grey’s tip I also have Jenny Shin in my notes is that right yeah exactly what I mean I like Jenny Shin she was great to watch when she was out here in Australia well she should have won in Sydney realistically um but just sort of over the weekend just didn’t quite have it and then got cabor because that was just in the sage of Kazuma but she’s had two top 10 here in the last two years and she hasn’t really had that sort of form anywhere else she finished with 67 last week very consistent ball Striker Green’s covered all this yeah but she’s also like the the tweeting of Jenny Shin can kind of give you a window into where she’s at and she seems in a really good spot at the so I think Jenny sh that’s this is going to be the lry caner of last week where the other two tip it right and you’re wrong l indeed there you go or if Marina Alex wins both greeny eye tips her Jimmy Su is not in the field is she she’s not playing she’s not she’s she had a top 10 here maybe last year yeah U but she been pretty good here I think yeah Sue status is just she does doesn’t get any starts at the moment really um so we’ll see what happens uh finally we’re going to go to a men’s and women’s mixed event this is the Volvo car scandinav mixed I don’t know when they started to feel they needed to put car in it Sur everyone knows what a Volvo is do they make they make boats motorbikes engines for other things other than cars don’t they do they you thinking about Yamaha buses and stuff they make buses they buses Volvo bus okay the look forward to the Volvo bus something yeah so this the bus let’s be clear the bus division of Volvo has nothing to do with this no cash it’s just cars this is just the cars y okay uh new host venue this year that’s going to test my Swedish pronunciation vasor Golf Club I think it is uh so players from the DP world and ladies European tour together there’s 54 holes at vasor and it has previously actually hosted both tours seevi baros Greg Norman and Anica arston among the players to win tournaments here sponsorat everyone knows Volvo but I learned in my little look at it the first time that assar gabrielson an egg seller who became the head sales manager for a Bearing Company and Gustav lson a mechanical engineer with a Founders okay and as we learned recently Volvo means to roll it does correct so there you go with the like listeners of this show it’s to roll yeah are so across Volvo anyway uh it’s actually some pretty good looking golf at this golf course or venue I should say given it’s got so many holes so there’s a TC course I don’t know what TC stands for but it’s actually been Sweden’s top course a couple of times recently uh sort of linksy styled it’s got some big bunkering and some mulations and it looks pretty cool and then there’s the classic course which is actually a Parkland course which is kind of backwards to me but anyway uh that’s got some good stuff uh remarkably though in an expanded sizable field Jason scrier is the lone Australian and then you’ve got some decent names on the women’s side meline sagstrom obviously Swedish and her compatriot Lyn Grant and then tour winners you got from the men’s side people like nacho AA Vincent Norman and Rod’s favorite family Rasmus hoard uh among the sort of more recognizable ones uh let’s get some tips and greeny will go to you again okay um yeah it’s a it’s a difficult one the course does look pretty cool yeah it looks actually really know it Adrian I don’t know it no no I’ve played a few places in Sweden but not this one not this one um I was thinking that my tip will be uh Miss Swedish guy just because it’s in Sweden well actually I wasn’t thinking that but he popped up Sebastian Soderberg um he’s had a really good stretch in Asia when the when the European tour went through Asia there for a while um and just in a little bit of research I realized again I’d forgotten it but did you guys do you guys know what he’s a little bit known for on the European tour he’s got a great name he’s got a great name he he’s he’s he’s played the fastest round oh okay 1 hour 52 minutes he set a record um in the Amiga Dubai Desert Classic back in 2020 I think he hit up first on his own and he shot 75 um in 96 Minutes that that beat the previous record of Thomas Peters apparently so I was like that’s that’s excellent and Sebastian’s my pick this week he’s been playing very well not just quickly okay is that was that the main basis for your pick is four years ago it wasn’t the main basis but right he’s trending from that 75 um okay there’s no uh youan Ferguson in the field this week I note which is a a relief for him or hopefully he’s losing status oh come on he’s he’s such a good player and actually quite a nice person um okay just in honor of uh Rod um little rodie I’m gonna pick a Hoy God yep Rasmus yep that’s fair enough it wouldn’t be the show without someone picking a Hoy guard so that’s fair enough uh I’m going to pick meline sagstrom she was sort of pretty well back at the US Women’s Open will be a bit disappointed I think she was someone’s Outsider last week she was a former winner at the shoppr as well was I think so yeah but um players like her don’t get to play at home very often that’s a nice boost this this tournament has had a a woman win Ling Grant won a couple of years ago it’s kind of I think they get the setup right to make it pretty competitive the golf courses should you know bode well for it so I think that’s actually a fair chance that we’ll get someone from the L side winning this event has always had uh a decent mix of of women in the top 10 yeah yeah because it it gets a pretty sort of standard DP world to a field but it gets a kind of decent L field like there’s a few that come back and stuff notably I saw in the L field one of my favorite names in golf speaking of Soderberg Laura fuk who played in the Aussie events and hazy and I had to work out how to pronounce their name it’s a great name uh anyway that will do us for episode 66 of playing from the tips but before we go greeny we mentioned tster at the top I’ve actually used it more than ever for the first time because we’ve got a little Aussie golf media Majors comp and it’s actually good fun and you can track later what tell us how people can use it you go to tster and much like footy tips if anyone does footy tips for the you know AFL or NRL or something like that you can just start up a league invite your friends and then each week you pick a golfer one golfer to represent you each week um the catch is that you can only use that golf one once per season so um and then whatever earnings they get you get and you uh rank against your friends your golf buddies or your golf club mates and things like that so that’s my Spiel out Jimmy outstanding it’s a good Spiel I think there’s even a there’s even a uh quote attributed to little Rod M about how much he enjoys it on the website oh is that right yeah salesperson little Ry yeah anyway it’s going well it’s good fun a little hobby of mine it’s going well it is good fun and it’s like all tipping comps where I enter in a golf thing and I just look at myself down the bottom of a leaderboard and just never anywhere near it but anyway uh greeny thank you for joining us and bringing some actual research and gravitas to the show it’s been a nice change what sort of epicurian Adventures are in store for you in the coming weeks uh I don’t know off to Tokyo again next week so have to maybe you’ll need greeny again we’ll we’ll see next week yeah we’ll see uh you can follow all this week’s golf on the golf Australia magazine website golf australia.com toau with news views and so much more across the site as well as the biweekly newsletter where you can keep up to date on world golf you can sign up at that website as well thank you for listening and we’ll be back next week on playing from the tips [Applause]
