1 2 3 let’s go all natti all the time powered by Arkansas for Arkansas the John neighbor show is live from theti State Sports Studios welcome into the John Neighbors show here live from the 501 appreciate everybody listening in and watching in on this beautiful day here in the great state of Arkansas I am your host John neighbors and appreciate each and every one of you for making us a part of your afternoon this afternoon hope everybody a wonderful weekend as we’re going to have plenty to talk about here today and again I’m on the road a little bit and uh you know it’s not exactly the the great backdrop but I made it work um you know this is just kind of what happens when you’re uh traveling it’s great for doing remote shows like this but also uh you know just depends on where you’re at and what you’re doing it and also in an impromptu trip like this kind of came at the last second but either way it’s a lot it’s a lot of fun I’m being back here into not only the city of L Rock but in the Hillcrest area uh going to be playing the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame golf tournament today so really looking forward to uh going through all of that and and playing that out and seeing some old friends and some old people so it’s going to be awesome folks it’s going to be awesome but again appreciate everybody tuning in listening in watching in however you’re doing it uh here with the John Neighbors show and we’ll have some things to talk about today talk a little bit about recruiting on the football side of things and they had a pretty big weekend and really a pretty big month uh for the Razorback football team so so we’ll get into that as well as some other news uh going on in the sports landscape but uh I wanted to talk about scheduling today and leading off with this and basketball scheduling really specifically because for whatever reason basketball scheduling has fascinated me I I have always wondered why there can’t be more home in homes why they can’t have more Marquee matchups that are in home Rines cuz let’s be honest folks whenever you have a college basketball program like arkans and you have a VC a facility in an atmosphere like Bud Walton Arena neutral sight games don’t do as much for you and also college basketball in general what makes college basketball so special what makes it so great well many things but a lot of it has to do with the atmospheres the home atmospheres the student sections people like having those games at home I have you know I understand for the NCAA tournament I’ve been fine with it being the way it is now I I’ve been fine with it just kind of going into neutral sites but I haven’t really been a fan as it’s gotten further away that in the final fours nowadays it’s in football stadiums I get it’s about money and everything but it just doesn’t feel right it ain’t right as you can see the national championship game being played behind me for 1994 uh that one was played in Charlotte in an arena because that’s how God intended it but still the the home atmospheres are one of the best things about college basketball but it seems like college basketball in general have tried to get away from it like you’re going to have games no matter what in your conference at home like it’s just how it is you’re going to have other events going on at home uh you may have a challenge like an SEC Big 12 challenge or something like that going on at home on occasion but you know I think I think back to like the last big time matchup that Arkansas had a home and home with like a true legitimate home and home and it was really Michigan about 10 years ago a little over 10 years ago uh they came to Bud Walton Arena and Mike Anderson’s first year Arkansas won which was one of the most fun and memorable games I remember uh at least in my student section days one of and then Arkansas went on the road to Michigan and lost the next season so it’s just gotten away from that and I think a lot of the Old School coaches in particular have not been fans of that or at least the traditional power programs are like it does nothing for us to go play on the road which I can agree to an extent but I still want to have some sort of great matchups and Marquee matchups happening in Bud Walton Arena and I’m willing and I’m totally fine with Arkansas going to a place on the road uh against a marquee opponent like I I guess again I don’t know what coaches think about that I know when we talked a little bit last week about calry and the scheduling that he’s been putting together he’s more about the box office main event things and the easiest way to get those big matchups in those box office events is to be able to just go through uh neutral sites like Arkansas I mean think about it Arkansas is playing next just already the season the schedule hasn’t even officially come out but just this next season Arkansas is going to be traveling to Madison Square Garden in New York City they’re going to be traveling to Kansas City they’re going to be traveling to Dallas they’re going to be traveling to Miami and I guess also Little Rock those are the only ones that are like for sure happening you got the non-conference or the conference opponents that you know are going to be travel who knows what else is going to be in the mix but that’s a lot like that’s a lot of travel for a non-conference slate but none of them are on the road except for the Miami game being in their home arena none of them are like that and so there has always been this stigma or all this thought process behind Arkansas and I’m I’m talking about just in my lifetime having home and homes and having Marquee matchups consistent ones if there was a team that I felt like Arkansas has played more so in the non-conference than anybody it’s been Oklahoma I mean they just got done with a three years uh stretch there uh I wanted to say they had some home in homes with them you know when Blake Griffin came to town and uh there was another game I guess at home that Rodney Clark had a big game too but it seems like Oklahoma has been the pretty big constant team that Arkansas’s played pretty consistently and now they’re in the SEC so they’re going to be playing him even more but that’s really been it and people always bring up teams or programs that they’d love to see the razor Backs play they’d love to see him play and you know the list goes on and on of things that I would love to see I’ve always wanted to go to fog Allen Fieldhouse I’ve never been to a game there I thought I thought it would be so cool if there was a way that Arkansas and Kansas could play each other and I do a home and home shoot I’d even be okay if it was a two for one where you go two Allen field house twice and Bud Walton wants like again I’m not making the decisions but I’d love to see that uh you know I’d love to see Arkansas play against any team that has historic you know whether it’s going to Cameron indor or going to the dean Dome uh they’re already playing in mass and Square Garden so that’s pretty cool but I think like going to Georgetown playing against Georgetown there would be really fun so you know just just places like that but there’s one common opponent there is one school one program that I think raise your back fans in general have been clamoring for quite some time now to get on the schedule to get them consistent and it’s been going on for a long time and folks we know which one that is it’s Memphis formerly known as Memphis State but it’s Memphis you know shout out to hog stats.com because he he puts out all the series and all the times that these teams have played and and they’ve played everybody and man there if there was a team in a program that makes the most sense to play every single year it’s Memphis there’s a lot of history between these two programs there’s a lot of success in the program each respective programs history and now that you have Coach Cal there’s even more history and more Intrigue because of course Cal being at Memphis for as long as he was went to a final four and was a uh couple free throws from Derrick Roseway winning a national championship so this one is the one that is the no-brainer has to happen I know Penny Hardway is the coach over there and it was interesting because it felt like from the Memphis side whenever Penny or whoever was asked about why they don’t play Arkansas it was kind of thrown was Arkansas is the one that can do it but I remember very distinctively two years ago being right here in lck actually at the uh Country Club here of L Rock hearing must speak to a crowd and somebody asked hey why don’t you playing Memphis and must said it’s amazing how whenever like we give a uh the phone we call them up and they see that there’s a number coming from the 479 uh they suddenly don’t really take the take the call so what it sounded like is that must was saying hey we’ve thought about it we’ve wanted to we we wanted to set it up but they just haven’t done it they haven’t wanted to be a part of it which again is really disappointing if that’s the case and who knows really what’s the truth maybe it’s somewhere in the middle maybe it’s about timing maybe it’s about agreements on where whatever it is but these are two programs that need to play consistently because not only are there there for the programs and and the proximity of it all but also you know to think about the amount of recruiting and amount of great players that’s in Memphis kind of that’s how I always thought maybe Memphis didn’t want to do it against Arkansas because Arkansas always got a lot of great players from Memphis during the Nolan Richardson days especially they got a lot of great players from Memphis and maybe that’s something that they don’t want to have to deal with and don’t want to have happening to their program so it’s the one that’s the most obvious and I look looked through the series between these teams and they played last year like I almost forgot about that they played in The Bahamas uh as the battle for Atlantis and Arkansas lost by five and that was the last time they played but before that folks it had been 20 years 21 years since Arkansas and Memphis played each other 20 1 years that series not existing is old enough to drink because that was that’s that’s how long it was but if you go before that these two teams played each other every single year from 1991 to 2003 so for a 12E stretch they played each other every single year every single year and in some cases like in 1995 they played each other twice because they played each other once in fville and then once in the NCAA tournament and also technically in ‘ 92 because they played each other again twice in that same season so what a crazy concept right to to play a team Mike Memphis and to play a team with that much history and to play a team that uh could make a lot of sense for both of those programs and I want to look back at some of the know history between these two programs and and why it’s become the way it is right now here just say but folks got to tell you about our friends over at Alumni Hall uh we know that if you want the ultimate razor back shopping experience when it comes to All Things app Peril there’s no better place than Alumni Hall Alumni Hall is where it’s at anytime you go in there shopping experience okay so looking at the history between Arkansas and Memphis overall again Arkansas lost their game uh last season in the battle for atlantas but let’s start back in 1991 uh because even before then Arkansas did play Memphis quite a bit I should have brought that up too because from 1971 all the way to 1979 they played each other six times in that stretch and how about this Arkansa lost to him in that stretch three out of the five times and actually all the way to 1980 they lost to them four out of the seven times right so then they start back up and in 9192 Arkansas lost that first game 92 to 88 so this is another thing too you’re going to go through these games arkans L that game 92 to 88 there in Memphis then they played each other again in the NCAA tournament up in Milwaukee second round of the NCAA tournament in 1992 and lost that game by two then in ’92 early part of that season that’s crazy Arkansas played Memphis three times in one calendar year but Arkansas then plays Memphis in fville Arkansas’s not ranked Memphis is number eight and Arkansas wins 81 to 76 then the next year Arkansas plays Memphis in Memphis Arkansas is number one they beat the pants off of them 9678 play each other the next year Arkansas barely squeaks by in fville arkans was number 12 they went 88 to 87 then they play up in Kansas City in the sweet 16 in 1994 95 Arkansas wins that game in overtime another close one and then in 95 96 the rebuilding year Memphis takes care business big time they’re number nine Arkansas’s unranked they win 9472 but then Arkansas wins in 97 7963 they win in 98 7572 they win in 98 again early part of the year uh 99 to 74 beat the crap out of them and then in 99 2000 7176 Arkansas loses that game in Memphis then Arkansas wins in 2000 and in 2002 7468 and then 90 to 73 so I brought all those games up just to kind of show the parody between these two opponents in fact if you look at their entire history Arkansas’s all-time record against Memphis is 11 and 11 they are dead even so there’s been a lot of back and forth between these two opponents and in their history but the most memorable and probably for if you’re a Razorback fan for the least amount of reasons was the final time that these two teams played before last year’s Battle of Atlantis but they played each other in fville in 2003 it was the first game of the year on January 2nd 2003 Arkansas played Memphis in fville and lost 72 to 67 now for those of you who can’t remember that was Stan Heath’s very first season as Razorback basketball coach that was their first season and they were not great they were not great I think they ended up winning nine games that year ironically enough they still won like four SEC games they had some hold from the noan Richardson era like a Blake Edens my guy uh also Rashard Sullivan Larry Satchel no one Wass over Larry Satchel Lonzo Lane Carl Baker and denisio Gomez Jonathan Pooky Mona Eric Ferguson true freshman so they they just didn’t have a whole lot of talent but anyways Arkansas gave Memphis what they won Arkansas was not ranked Memphis was not ranked at that time and again Arkansas was not a great team but Memphis ended up winning by five and that was just I mean you think about it they were playing each other every single year since 91 and this is now in 2003 it was a tradition it was history it was great but then for whatever reason which we’ll talk about what it is the series stopped the series stopped it it was so great to see exactly how this back and forth between these two really great programs just suddenly stopped Stan Heath was the coach of Arkansas and who was the coach of Memphis John calip Perry John Cal Perry was the coach and after that game it was basically coming out where Cal Perry said we’re no longer going to be playing Arkansas we’re really only going to be focusing on nationally relevant teams or nationally competitive teams and boy that that boil people over boy that that boil people over and it never happened again Memphis went through several coaches I mean Calle Perry left to go to Kentucky Josh passer believe was the coach there didn’t do anything with it didn’t happen with Arkansas tubby Smith was there didn’t happen with Arkansas and Penny Hardway has been there and hasn’t happened with Arkansas so you know it’s it’s one of those things it needs to get back going and needs to get going quick fast and in a hurry cuz that’s what the series has been great for has been great for both programs and I mean listen Memphis is so close to lck in the central Arkansas Area it’s two hours which to me is the worst drive on I40 you could ever have is from lit Rock to Memphis because of the amount of trucks like if any of you have driven it or driven it often enough you know exactly what I’m talking about that thing sucks but still it’s only about 2 hours and so it makes it about what 5 hours roughly from fville it’s not a bad drive and same thing with Memphis but here’s the thing I think that this game I think that this game at least I’d be perfectly fine with playing this game in North lit rock at Simmons Bank Arena you know scheduling is great I talked about scheduling last week I like having B games in the central Arkansas area or in other places too across the state that would be the one if you were to do it that would make the most sense that I would be completely content with where both programs have to agree to it I don’t know if Memphis would because it is technically in the state of Arkansas but when you’re talking about the traveling from the campuses it’s actually closer for Memphis than it is Arkansas at least I mean right there it’s pretty much the same but overall it’s a lot closer for them so that needs to happen people need to get over their egos and that needs to happen that’s a series that I want to see continue to be played not only for the sake of Arkansas but also for the sake of Cal Perry for the sake of Penny Hardaway for the sake of you know how difficult it is to get schedules going anyways and it didn’t have to be a home and home like that would be one I accept I don’t know if it’ll happen I don’t know who it’s on but just given how Cal has handled his scheduling so far I doubt he’s afraid of it I mean for crying out loud I thought it was pretty funny that he scheduled Oakland on this year’s schedule for Arkansas you know Oakland the team that beat Kentucky this past year in the NCAA tournament to knock him out like he ain’t running from anybody not at all not at all he ain’t running from anybody so hopefully they find a way to make this work between the two programs I’m not going to hold my breath but again I’m pretty hopeful but you know I’m sure a lot of you are hoping that this summertime where it’s hot outside you don’t have to deal with with any pest you know termites or cockroaches or spiders or mosquitoes or you know ticks fleas all that stuff because there’s nothing worse than already burning up but then you also have to deal with those types of things that are not only messing with your home but messing with your family’s health they called pest for a reason well luckily for you we have a solution to help you out with if you call Hopper termite and pest today call Hopper termite and pest they’re going to get you all taken care of and squared away okay so looking at that I I wanted to kind of segue this into a whole segment in in dealing with uh calip Perry because we talked about how that was one of the deals that happened against Arkansas and Razorback fans at least some of the older Razer back fans remember it and they were still heated about it and being talked that way it’s like hold on wait hey wait a minute Chief you know because if you look prior to that Arkansas had won I guess at that point in time when they when they started back up their series was 92 Arkansas won 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 nine they won nine matchups against Memphis and Memphis only won three so AR was nine and three during that stretch so one like Memphis was just beating the breakes off of him in fact when Memphis beat Arkansas in that final meet in 2003 that was the like Arkansas beat them twice prior to that the previous two years Arkansas beat Memphis and one of those is most memorable game too but which we’ll talk about but the point is is like that was just so out of left field it felt like it felt like it was unnecessary it felt like it was a cheap shot and there are people that still hold that Grudge to the to this day and when I got asked by an intern of ours why do PE why did people hate caliper at Arkansas was it just the obvious reasons was it just because oh well you know that he’s good he’s good at what he does drives us up a wall we don’t want that we don’t like that and I started laughing about it because I’m like you know it actually was more than that it wasn’t just one moment in time it seemed like like every few years something more would happen to build up the hatred that Razer back fans had for Cal Perry now I’m GNA be honest I was one of those hated calip Perry but it’s amazing what happens whenever he’s your guy because suddenly you’re like oh well you know I actually always respected cow and what he’s done yeah he’s always been a good guy done things the right way players love him you know you just got to trange your tune and that’s 100% true and there is no shame in that folks no shame whatsoever no shame so I’ve said the same thing like if it was Tony vatel a lot of you who don’t like Tony vatel said but Tony vatel you’re your coach you’re like you know what I always liked his recruiting tactics you know it’s just going to be happening that way because that’s how fans are but people forget a lot of the reasons why Arkansas fans had had some issues with Cal and that was one of the first ones was when he’s like oh we want to play nationally relevant programs another thing that happened was actually in a particular game against Memphis and it was Nolan Richardson’s last game against Memphis as the Razorback head coach where Arkansas won big there in Memphis but JJ singer never forget it uh he was a one of the he’s a freshman player highly regarded highly decorated his brother Jared singer played Ohio State you may have remembered him but he was diving for like it was an classic Arkansas Memphis game and there’s a guy named Tony Barbie sure you remember who is on the sidelines for Memphis again I wish I could show these clips and make it so much better but you know copyright anyways Tony Barbie’s on the bench with the players and everything and and JJ solinger kind of Dives for a ball he doesn’t go into anybody like that he kind of just holds himself on the chair Tony Barbie just like throws his elbow an assistant coach he wasn’t a player say coach throws his elbow and it kind of shoves him off he’s like what gives and then nothing got called No One Richardson was infuriated like he had to have Mike Anderson hold him back he was he was looking to fight and I’m just telling you right now a lot of coaches are all talk when it comes to their fighting skills they Nolan Richardson I don’t know if there’s any college basketball coach that could have whipped him at all especially when he was mad so he kind of had to get held back a little bit but that it like it kind of stemed from that nothing happened it was never really addressed Cal didn’t like was just either oblivious to it or saw it and just acted like it didn’t happen you know like all that stuff he just whatever we’ll just move on and people don’t forget that like hey that was his team that was his assistant coach and nothing really happened from it at least not anything enough to where Arkansas fans felt like justice was served nothing really happened there so you had that and then you had the stopping of Arkansas and Memphis and why they didn’t do that anymore and that was and the reasons why that was given that people really got frustrated by understandable completely understandable and then you throw into the mix of of a few other things and may seem like it’s very simple and it probably is it probably is a very simplistic way of looking at it but then you throw in some other things like um you know the the approach that Memphis had under Cal and how they were kind of locking a like kind of building a fence around the city of Memphis and they were getting all these players and they were they were really good is what it was they were really good and Arkansas wasn’t Arkansas was going through the Stan Heath years and the John Pelfrey years and the early Mike Anderson years and Arkansas was not good but they saw Memphis a team that was always good but they felt better than and beat them they felt like way okay okay hold on hold on a second this isn’t right so not only they not wantan to play us but then they’re being better than us don’t like that at all we’re not getting any players out of Memphis anymore we don’t like that either so that was another reason to added to the Cal stuff well then he goes to Kentucky and now he’s in your conference and now you get to play Cal you’re still not playing Memphis but you get to play Cal while he’s at Kentucky and I’m not even really going to go into all the other like the reasons why most people hated Cal because I feel like even like that that was the commonality for most fans and fan bases a lot of people didn’t like the the ridiculous over-the-top nature of one and done like they just didn’t like it a lot of coaches were against it fan bases were against it they didn’t like the the goofiness of it just like okay you’re doing this and then like your Midnight Madness is wild you got celebrities showing up to your games like LeBron James is showing up where he has nothing no no connections whatsoever with Kentucky nothing to do with Kentucky doesn’t care about Kentucky but he’s showing up and just made people mad and Cal say what you want about him but he changed the game he changed college basketball because Coach K was one of those guys anti- one and done a lot of coaches were historic coaches and suddenly they started to change your tune because they started getting getting beat for a lot of these big- time recruits that they were needing and wanting but Cal just kept on man he just kept on doing it and had success uh you know he we went to multiple final fours he won a national Championship with one and duns and so he he changed it a lot but then you add in one of the biggest kickers for Razorback fans and this one is the one where I think the hatred or at least The Angst got turned up a few notches on the Razorback side of things for again whether you agree with it or not whether you you blame him or not this is just how it was people were extremely upset and mad about him taking kids out of the state of Arkansas and them going to Kentucky know for a while there Arkansas always seemed to get some of the best players out of the state that they wanted and Arkansas always had good players some better than others but you know you think back you know when they got corus Williamson how huge of a deal that was you know when they got Joe Johnson how big of a deal that was like those were the five-star Bonafide big time NBA caliber guys and even a Bobby poris got him and how big that was you know getting Ronnie Brewer was a big deal he he played three years but ended up being a first round pick Arkansas had a pretty good stretch of getting those high level High Caliber players not saying they they got all of them because like James Anderson was one of the ones that they didn’t get but they had a pretty good percentage and then there was a kid named Archie Goodwin who’s coming out of the central Arkansas Area fstar player oneandone caliber player and I was like man would love to have him you know we got Mike Anderson here and you know he’s an Arkansas kid he’s a five star he’s a McDonald’s allamerican man we’d love to have him he’d be he’d be great he’d be great well pretty early in the process he committed to Kentucky in Cal Perry which was a bummer within itself was pretty frustrating within itself but it was the comment that he used that really upset Razer back fans and because of that was almost like the shrapnel went towards the anger towards Cal Perry where Argie Goodwin was basically saying why he went to Kentucky instead of arkans was like it was a business decision and everyone’s like business decision like this was 10 years ago so you got to remember the time folks like I know things have changed but at the time it’s like business decision seriously a man you’re good enough to play anywhere you want and you’ll get drafted and you’re talking about a business decision how much they paying you how much is Cal and them paying you like that was kind of that was the immediate the thing he’s like okay so Cal’s cheating he’s paying players now because it was a business decision so that added in but then of course we know what the biggest the biggest one the biggest ordeal the biggest frustration that Raz your back fans had against Cal during that time and I’ll tell you here in just a second first though I’m going to tell you about El Jennings law folks so know just as in sports preparation is key most memorable reason why raise your back fans had so much disdain towards Cal there’s a fellow by the name of Malik monk you’ll probably remember him right should probably even know him now plays for the Sacramento Kings he actually doing really well find believe he just signed recently a big fat new contract he’s doing a really good job for him Sixth Man of the Year candidate just you know I don’t care what anybody says getting to the NBA is hard having a career in the NBA’s heart but having any sort of award having any sort of big payday that’s that’s rare company that you’re in credit where credit is due Malik Monk’s a great player was a great player in high school was a great player in college and was a great player in the NBA and continues to be but that last name meant something because there was a sibling of his named Marcus monk Mar monk who played football for the Razorbacks during the Houston nut era his freshman year actually was in 2004 his final year was in 2007 and then he was also a basketball player for Arkansas played for Stan Heath and also John Pelfrey played a little bit there was pretty good in fact if you go back and watch the film he actually did a really good job against Blake Griffin Arkansas when they beat Oklahoma and beat Blake Griffin a lot of that had to do with the great job that Marcus monk did defensively so go check out that highlight but that was Malik Monk’s sibling and Malik monk had been being talked about as as young as eighth grade I mean it was building how great of a player he was and he was going to have a universal offer he could go anywhere in the country he wanted to go and of course he’s from lanto but he transferred to bville high school transferred to Northwest Arkansas and people were like okay so maybe there’s going to be the connections here he’s going to go to Arkansas he’s going to go to Arkansas and it kept getting put out there he’s like oh yeah it’s Arkansas or Kentucky Arkansas Kentucky but hey Arkansas they’re they’re good to go they’re in the mix it’s going to happen it’s going to happen it’s going to be Arkansas and every was like okay fired up because this could be a game changer because then you could have I mean you just had poris and you know you had Gafford but then you could have Malik Monk on top of that too and you know like you have just a great stretch and you know this is this is the best player that’s probably come out of the state of Arkansas since Joe Johnson maybe coros Williamson he’s a Bonafide Lottery Pick and and trust me I was somebody who called his games at Bentonville I called it was so cool to see the amount of opponents they played I remember I called a game up in Springfield where they played Chino Hills which was With The Ball Brothers so I got to see them go up against each other he played against Jason Tatum I got to call that game uh Jason Tatum who’s now an NBA champion and great player for the Celtics they went up against each other up in Bentonville so there was just a lot of lot of stuff surrounding him he was like this was going to be a program changing type of player it really was because Arkansas was already getting back on track under Mike Anderson they had been to the NCAA tournament they’re finally kind of catching a little bit of a Groove and he was going to be the one that sent them over the top to get him back into the second weekend at least of the sweet 16 maybe even a final four everyone kept feeling like as Arkansas is Arkansas is Arkansas and I’ll never forget it was some random day it was like a like nobody saw it coming and this is still when social media was like Twitter especially was kind of becoming a thing and I I was doing a radio show my very first radio show and I was on my way in and somebody texted me and was saying hey Malik monk just committed to Kentucky I was like what like hold on a second this was there no what there’s supposed to be some sort of like crazy event about this right shouldn’t this have an event shouldn’t this have some buildups shouldn’t this have some some juice behind it like what do you mean committed to Kentucky what’s going on here I thought it was Arkansas Arkansas was leading the way well then there was always this speculation that came out speculation whether it’s true or whether it’s false whether it’s a little bit exaggerated or whatever I’m just going to tell you what was reported this is all reportedly okay reportedly so make sure that you you understand that but Arkansas felt so confident that Malik monk was coming here but Cal over at Kentucky we know how many players that he was always adding into the mix we know how many players he was bringing in high level players it was reported allegedly that Cal pretty much said hey you got to make your decision you got to make your decision right now I got other players that I’m waiting on and I’m not going to be waiting around for you so you either come to AR you either come to Kentucky or you don’t but if you don’t make your decision here then we’re going to move on regardless so that put them where it was kind of the the push and the decision then also allegedly W Monk’s like okay well I’ll just go to Arkansas just going to go where my heart goes go to Arkansas so much so that he even texted one of the assistant coaches at Arkansas and said hey I’m going to commit to Arkansas Place goes nuts goes crazy then allegedly later his brother Marcus monk calls the assistant coaches and the coaches AR so says hey can’t let him go to Arkansas he’s going to go to Kentucky you know this is something for this is a family decision this is a business decision and you know he’s going to move on and go there and so he ended up going to Kentucky allegedly that was how it all kind of transpired nobody really knows the the set truth and I would love I would love to have Malik Monk on for an interview maybe that’s what I look for is just to see like hey what was that process really like like what what was really truly going on was it something like that or was it something completely different were you even actually ever interested in Arkansas I just kind of get to the bottom of it I’d love to know more about it but still at the end of the day that’s how people felt that’s how people felt it all went down and when people feel that way they don’t want to change their mind mind are they’re just going to stick with it because they’re pissed R fans were pissed they were mad they’re like this guy here playing us for a full I hate him for it and so they never really reconciled from that and I even feel like and I don’t want to speak out of turn here but I feel like if any Razer back fans still hold any disdain about that situation it’s actually more towards Marcus than it is Malik but I’m telling you right now Arkansas is going to have Malik monk back in the building because of cow now that he’s the head coach so you fans that are upset by that or I’m just telling you it’s going to happen do whatever you see fit do you want to boo you can boo if you get mad you can get mad if you don’t care if you don’t care if you’re fine with whatever but like just know it’s going to happen so get ready prepare yourself it’s going to happen and if it does it’s the way it is so it goes but people really turned towards Cal Raz your back fans getting back to the m to the main point people turned against Cal and turned saying hey this dude got our one five star already an Archie goodwi takes our another five star in Malik Monk and it’s always talking about business and talking about this and he’s got his you know big smile his arrogant self over there and dancing around and and everything it just infuriated Razer fans just sent them to a whole another level of pissed off and again some of those situations weren’t directly or at least in some cases didn’t have anything directly to do with John calip Perry but it still had him taken trapnel because when he started connecting the dots and he started looking at they all right what’s the common denominator here where’s the commonality where’s the common problem coming from oh John caliper he’s always the coach that’s involved in those things he’s always the guy behind the scenes there’s stuff that’s shady he’s getting final fours taken away and vacated at UMass and then at Memphis you know he’s always getting these big time players and and there’s stories coming out about what certain players were offered that ended up going to Kentucky that were offered at other schools but then C everybody at Kentucky tried to convince everybody he’s like oh well no they came to Kentucky for free oh okay so Duke was offering them all this money or Kansas offering all that no no that’s fine but they came to the mecca college basketball for free shut up don’t piss on my leg and telling me at draining we all knew better than that we all knew better than that so the point is is that that a lot of those things and I’m probably missing some things I’m sure people are going to bring them up there were always those things that Razorback fans really despised about Cal and it built over a 15 20e span and now he’s your head coach how insane is that now now he’s your head coach I have him IIA I have completely forgotten about any of the things that were going on I have zero issues with Cal I had to delete so many tweets man I know a lot of Razorback fans had to but I said all that just because I wanted to explain to some of you especially some of you younger listeners and Watchers if you wanted to know truly why Arkansas hated cow or hates cow did hate cow maybe in a different way from just the common oh this is why everybody hates Cal that’s why and if I ever get a chance to talk with Cal which I’m hoping here soon I will we sit down with Cal I’m going to ask him just I’m not going to go like hey like did you do this did you no I’m going to be like when these things happened I kind of go one by one by like hey when you said you didn’t want to play nationally relevant programs was that more of you just I know what he’s going to say but like was that more of just you playing up to your own standards as a program or was that kind of you taking a shot to you know in the Malik monk thing when Malik monk like what was that process like and when you recruited him was it something that you really gave him an ultimatum was it was it as clean as that was it as like serious as that or was it kind of just you know he gave you a call and you’re like hey coach I’m going to Kentucky you’re like okay great great you know I’d love just to sit down with him and talk to him about those things and see what he has to say see if any of it actually comes together and makes sense could be a possibility I’m hopeful for it but hopefully that maybe gives you a little bit of an idea I would have liked to have been more descriptive in some of them but like maybe that gives you an idea of why it was so bad why Razer back fans were so mad during that whole stretch don’t have to worry about it anymore though he’s your guy he’s your guy he’s your coach and you could not be more excited about him right right right folks get tell about our friends over at Signature Bank the official Bank of Natty State Sports we know that when it comes to our livelihoods when it comes to our all the time powered by Arkansas for Arkansas the John neighbor show is live from the natti state Sports Studios all right so moving on into the next segment of the John Neighbors show as we have a few things to talk about when it comes to recruiting for Arkansas so nice little git and big git for Arkansas over the weekend and which the month of June has been really good for football side of things I mean I I think it’s been and Arkansas continues to add players to the mix for the 2025 class uh we’ll start with the kid from the state of Arkansas Antonio Jordan now Antonio Jordan is a wide receiver out of now now stop me if you’ve heard this before he’s out of Warren arkans saw he’s out of Warren as a wide receiver okay you know who else is from there guy named trayan Burks jerius Wright Greg Childs Chris grg ringing any bells probably should The waren Lumberjacks man just continuing to produce skill position players that are Next Level great and Antonio Jordan is not a highly recruit ranked kid I mean he’s had a few good offers like South Carolina Tennessee Florida State but he’s still a three star according to 24/7 Sports but get hit this the kid’s 6’6 all right now I don’t know about y’all but I like when wide receivers are big enough to like go and get the ball you know like when when they’re that huge if they’re growing up against a 510 corner you know they can they can make passes I mean yeah speed’s great and getting the ball in space and everything but if you need someone to go over the top throw it up it’s nice to have a guy who’s 66 but that’s not the only thing folks here’s another deal this dude’s 230 lbs he is 6’6 230 pounds wide receiver he still got a full year of high school to play like I man that looks like a DN to me like if I saw that if you told me that Arkansas got a commitment from a an edge rusher that was 66 230 I believe it who knows maybe that’s what he does maybe he goes down the route of Jamal Anderson Jamal Anderson came in as a wide receiver originally then he moved the defensive end and got drafted in the top 10 but we know if he listen if he’s a wide receiver that dude’s going to be dude’s going to be good so 66 230 lbs and he is the 14th verbal pledge so far for the Razer back class the other one will be the 15th which we’ll talk about uh but he’s also the eighth in the month of June so the Razorbacks have really gotten after it in recruiting uh for the 2025 class uh there’s still a lot of time to be had there’s still a lot of things that they got to do themselves and take care of I mean there there’s no question about it and you know they’re not they’re not done they’re they’re still working on it but I got to give kudos though because it’s really I can’t imagine how tough it is to recruit high school kids especially this day and age because the transfer portal is so much more important overall at least to a place like Arkansas but to also recruit where it’s like this is a Do or Die year for Sam Pitman so the future is kind of you don’t really know where it’s going is s pman going to still be around is his coaching staff still going to be around that’s really hard to do when you’re trying to recruit high school kids like that’s just how I feel about it it’s a tough tough tough thing to do so either way they’re still trying to get after it Arkansas’s still 32nd in the country in recruiting for the high school class but I loved what uh Antonio Jordan said when he was asked about his decision he said home I’m an Arkansas kid always been love it here me too kid me too some about Warren man is not only do they have great players but they have great Arkansas guys just they love their state man love their state so I I love that he pledged I love that uh he’s going to be a part of that class and who knows what the team’s even going to look like next year but man I just still can’t get over that 66 230 that’s a big old boy a wide receiver I’ll be curious to see like kind of what his what a speed level is you know is he somebody that is a burner or is he just more of a possession guy and that’s fine if he is or what I mean again it’s fine whatever he ends up being but it seems like he was all about being Arkansas no matter what it’s crazy to me too he’s the number eight player in the state of Arkansas according to 247 sports like the eth ranked player in the state of Arkansas Carri is he is the number one player he’s committed to LSU Grayson Wilson after that committed arkans Al Marian Robinson it’s a safety who’s yet to commit but then you have Daniel Anderson a running back who’s committed to Notre Dame Quinton Murphy who’s the athlete out of park viiew committ to Arkansas Marcus Wimberly out of box site is committed to Oklahoma he’s a safety Braden Walton out of ashs uncommitted Antonio Jordan eighth player committed to Arkansas h so yeah interesting interesting to see how uh how that plays out and also can’t forget cash Archer from Greenwood I think he’s related to that Kane Archer guy think he probably is somebody probably knows who he is knows a little bit about him too so that’s my guess though that’s my guess uh talk about the other player that Arkansas got a commitment here in just a second folks I’m going to continue to tell you about our friends over at bro.com we know the sports scene has slowed down a little bit when it comes to your sports betting but never to fear cuz you can still have some fun with it on bro.com nadty because anytime that you want to go in and you want to play some bets on Sports that’s with Major League Baseball going on right now you can do so and going up against real people it’s none of this house stuff it’s like simply like oh I say this team’s going to win betting 10 bucks on it somebody else says oh I say the other team’s going to win 10 bucks put on it and you go ahead to head and whoever loses you got to pay out it makes it easy because they have the cash app and vinmo to be able to do it and so it’s it’s just it’s just so simple it’s so easy and it’s not just about the money lines and about wins and losses you can do the spreads you can do the over unders and when you go on there you get to see all the different games that they have to choose from like for instance if you wanted to go up against Chad Chad put 80 bucks down on the Guardians at plus one and a half runs over the Baltimore Orioles well put your money where your mouth is go up against them and make it happen where you put down same amount of money or how about Trevor who who Trevor got the Phillies at minus one and a half runs for 25 bucks well you put down 25 bucks plus one and a half for the Tigers simple as that so go check it out today start winning some money and start having some fun with where you save a ton of money in the juice you do it at bro.com nty that’s bro.com all right and the other player that Arkansas got a commitment from over the weekend is Trent sers Trent sers he’s another defensive lineman which Arkansas has now four defensive lineman committed for the 2025 cycle he’s out of Mobile Alabama and he is now the 15th verbal commitment for the Razer now he’s 65 240 pounds so can go I know it’s I keep bringing it up but think about that you got a wide receiver who’s 66 230 and you have a defensive lineman that’s 65 240 wild but either way uh he chose Arkansas over Mississippi State Old Miss Nebraska had offers to them and he just felt like it was a good fit felt like it was a good a family fit which is what he was looking for overall and that’s how it all went down that’s how it all transpired so now Arkansas continues to build uh with someone like him and deak Adams of course being involved also Scott Fountain was very much involved too his graphic is absurd so I encourage you all to go check it out on social media on Twitter because it’s it’s pretty fun but it’s pretty wild thing too so um but yeah he is a the 46th ranked player out of the state of Alabama and he’s going to be calling the Hogs uh next season as a freshman whichs to be the case so here’s the deal though and kind of going back to the main point here’s the deal like Arkansas transfer portal Arkansas with recruiting I I don’t I don’t really care as much about high school anymore I really don’t I I maybe I’m wrong in that but it’s like just because of that and the portal I mean so many different things can happen like you can go from being like Oh I’m all in on this kid but the next year you could leave easily and you just wasted a year you wasted energy you wasted development you wasted time because let’s be honest this isn’t like college basketball where an 18-year-old kid can step right up and be great like immediately very very very very rare occasion can a true freshman walk into the SEC as an 18-year-old kid and be dominant or be great or be next level Elite like that just does not happen just does not happen again if it does it is a rarity it’s the exception not the rule so I really hope that they continue to hit hot and heavy the transfer portal that’s really where it counts that’s really what I care most about and I want to see players continue to be a part of the roster too but you know the players that stick around for three years that they just don’t exist anymore especially if they’re highly recruited players coming out of high school they’re like okay well I’m not getting the development I feel like right now that I’m supposed to or I’m not getting the playing time that I’m supposed to I’m not getting the nil that I’m I feel like I’m supposed to so I’m just going to go somewhere else okay and then those players that we at other schools that said the same thing end up coming to you so it’s just this craziness going on but hey it’s a year-to-year thing that’s what it needs to be and I hate to say it unless it changes but it just needs to be a year-to-year thing oh you’re going to play here for a year okay well you just got to look at it as a coach where it’s like the guys I have on my roster this year I’m going to assume that none of them are coming back next year and I’m going to find the ones that I have to have next year and I’m going to do whatever it takes to keep them there but I’m going assume the the backups the second stringers the true freshman that didn’t play they ain’t going to be here next year so I’m just going to approach it in that way like pick and choose the ones that I have to have that have to be great that have to be good and I have to keep on the roster I have to keep Happy Everything find those identify those do those and then for the rest of them be like all right let’s let’s look at this is there potential here will they play next year will they be a big time player next year are they worth dealing with are they worth trying to negotiate with if not let’s move on if so try it again like keep keep keep doing whatever you can do keep doing whatever you can do to make it work so but it’s just wild it’s the wild west right now in raise your back Sports and in college football college sports in general uh I never know how to keep up with it but hey somebody’s going to suit up that helmet in that Jersey wear that Razer back this football season or basketball season or baseball season and that’s going to determine how well everything’s going is if you win you haven’t yet not for football at least but could end up happening I’m not jealous of Sam Pitman I’ll say that I’m not jealous of him and what stuff he has to deal with so but we’ll continue on TR Neighbors show coming up next here on natti state Sports so stay with us 1 2 3 let’s go all natti all the time powered by Arkansas for Arkansas the John neighbor show is live from the natti state 21 years or older to participate so check it out today at bro.com slatty all right let’s talk about a few of these stories going on here I I I love this these are the things that I’m for here in summertime so college football teams are competing with each other to offer the lowest beer prices in the country so college football report here on Twitter said the price of beer at every college football stadium in 2023 now this is a new thing folks because you it’s it’s amazing like 10 years ago having beer at a college football game was unheard of didn’t exist maybe in very special occasions but it’s like it’s so common now like I remember growing up growing up and going to Razer rack football games and all you had was coke and then unfortunately for a while you had Pepsi and that was it and then all people would do would be sneaking in their booze and their boots or in their you know bags and whatever just you know put together Jack old Jack and Coke and square away let’s R’s roll so you had to sneak it in but don’t have to worry about that anymore because now beer is pretty much available at every single major college football stadium Arkansas being one of them but as we also know it’s quite expensive anytime you go to sporting events or concerts or anything like that to buy alcohol it’s overpriced but you’re still going to pay for it and that’s why they make the prices as Extreme as they do is because they know you’ll still pay for it but I was shocked to see some of these prices so first off Arkansas is at 10 bucks right here I feel like nine is a good price a fair price but also I could be wrong about this but I believe the 10 bucks at least get you the tall aluminum bottles not just a can but like a tall aluminum bottle of multure or Bud Light or whatever it is I’m pretty sure could be wrong you can correct me but that makes it a little bit better like if it was 10 bucks for just a normalized can probably have some uh some issues there but how about this Tennessee is the highest priced beer why like I I I I I know that they’re going to make the prices as much as what the you know what the consumer will pay for it so they’re probably making a killing but I would just like to know and ask Tennessee back okay but why are you going why are you the most expensive beer prices in major college football the answer they will give privately be like cuz there those idiots those idiot volunteer people they’re morons and they’ll pay for it but the public answer they’ll give is like well because it’s about the the market price andah it’s like man come on now so I was a little surprised to see that but what I was really shocked by is some of these other ones like let’s look at this let’s look at this let’s look at this image in in general okay at TCU and two lane you can get beer for $3 excuse me you can’t go to bars and get beer for $3 you can barely go to the grocery store and get beer for $3 five bucks at Wake Forest Louisville and Oregon and Coastal Carolina okay Kansas and Kansas State makes a little bit more sense at six bucks because there ain’t much else going on there ain’t much else to do and they’ve always struggled to get people in their games anyway so there you have it but seven bucks at South Carol Florida and Auburn that’s that’s sad Arkansas’s we got to figure something out folks we got to figure something out but at the same time though because of the North End Zone seats which I have sh don’t say anything maybe that’s why but Missouri or other SEC teams of note Arkansas A&M Alabama are all 10 bucks Missouri the only SEC team at 9 Oklahoma and old M are at 850 and LSU Texas Vanderbilt Mississippi state they’re at eight bucks that’s pretty much it so the average right here in the NCAA is $834 so Arkansas is above average for their beer prices not a good look not a good look but all it’s going to take is a tendance to start going down and they’ll fine ways like I in Jurassic mark a coupon day like maybe have something to where if it’s like a game if it’s like uh do they play this year in that third game ah just look up a schedule that third game against uh that non-conference non power five the group of five opponent like there’s probably not going to be a whole lot of people there or even the game like second to last game of the year at home dude you should be like all right beer price is half price come on in make just make margin I guarantee you would make more money if you did that maybe they’ll do that maybe I should be in charge of marketing but either way I thought it was really funny though that they have uh done this and looked at the beer prices but TCU and two Lan they know how to party $3 beers like an happy hour over there uh also in some other crazy story I didn’t even know what this was but five men have been convicted of running an illegal streaming service called jetflix for over 10 years that was larger than Netflix Hulu and Amazon Prime combined and there was they got uh they it was an unauthorized massive streaming service and they did it for nearly a decade and they got convicted there in Vegas how like how crazy is that I have never even heard of this and maybe I’m the crazy one for not hearing this but like the fact that I went on for 10 years and no one stopped it like how could it be bigger than anything but yet like did you just not have any whistleblowers like that is I’m not even mad about that like that’s impressive I know people were having like jailbroken like Amazon Fire Sticks or whatever and I don’t know maybe that’s what that was but the fact that they went on for 10 years and they just now got busted it’s pretty impressive it’s pretty impressive also a little bit of sad note I don’t know if you guys remember this but Taylor Wy and AKA Taylor Tulu he was a UFC fighter UFC fighter from UFC 1 but also he’s from Forgetting Sarah Marshall which is what I’m going to remember him for he’s the big guy that looked like the big baby as they call him in uh in uh uh Forgetting Sarah Marshall like it’s like I wish I could play the clip but yeah this guy right here with a big bald head when he walks in on Peter Forgetting Sarah Marshall is one of my favorite movies but he like walks in on Peter he’s like those happy tissues or sad tissues like he was just really funny so I saw that I was like what a bummer what a bummer hate to see that so hate to end on a sad note but that’s the way it goes sometimes either way though appreciate all of you listening in and watching into the the John Neighbors show be sure to like And subscribe to All Things natti State Sports as we’re going to keep it moving into next week having some content I’m actually going to be in lck on Monday for a golf tournament so uh maybe a
