Bryan Hayes, Jeff O’Neill and Jamie McLennan discuss whether or not Chris Tanev is the right defenceman for the Maple Leafs and should they go long term with the veteran defenceman.
all right here we go over drive off and running TSN 1050 on the TSN app Your Home Smart speaker up on TSN 2 all afternoon Brian hazy o dog Jeff O’Neal Jamie noodles mclenon how we feeling beautiful day beautiful day here in Toronto hazy I just found before I came on the air I wanted to crawl through the TV and take him off the golf course the worst dressed golfer in all of golf wow he’s on the Senior Tour in his name is Rocco mediate oo dude he was wearing high top mountain climbing boots on the US Open senior like I’m telling you put golf on in the background and find this guy walking around he we need visit now like now it’s bothering me I’ve never seen golf shoes like this they’re high top killamanjaro hiking boots and he’s got these weird khaki pants on and he lost a bunch of weight and he he’s got a weird vibe that he should not be looking like that out there he’s got to get it together man Peter malar G4 get something better than that you have call up Donnie Nicholls right now Rocco well because his rep I believe it’s Rocco that used to go up and play the national with no shoes on you hear that story I think he was Rocco yeah that was someone was telling me this guy showed up to the Nash and was hitting like cut six irons into every green with no shoes on and he shot like a 70 for fun was 240 off the tea long irons in middle of the green TT walking off no shoes that that’s what I heard I think it was Rocco and maybe that explains it it’s either no Sho find these boots that this guy’s wearing just sent them to him I’m watching them right now they are like a dude mountain climbing it it’s just if I was his they would rattle me on the first T because I’d have my nice G4S on and I’d look down and be like are we going hiking after this Rocco or what are we doing you guys probably are too like young you see that looks like Nike a remember when the the air was in the sole they had little pockets of air all the way back through okay that’s what it looks like like the old Nike Air it just those are they’re not Nike they’re yellow ball what is happening here come on stop doing it you were in an 18ho playoff with Tiger Woods at you almost took down Tiger Woods in 2008 in one of his prime seasons and you almost got it he had a broken knee and you still couldn’t beat him since then you’ve been doing weird stuff yeah that’s a different vibe for Roco man I I don’t know what to make of that um we’ll try to stay on it we’ll try to figure out what’s happening there with rock mediate at the US Open uh we got a big one today John Cooper later in the hour from Vegas the whole NHL’s down in Vegas we got Ross Atkins on Ross we haven’t spoken with Ross in a long time nice enough to come on I give him credit right Ross has always been good to us he’s always willing to come on the show we haven’t had him for a while it’s obviously not going well you know he spoke with the media today he he took the onus on himself which I appreciate but I think we’ll ask him about that you know why is it on you that Springer can’t hit why bashet struggled all year gosman’s having issues Alejandro Kirk’s a mess you know there’s there’s Pro players that are making money that have been vets for a while that aren’t performing that’s not on Ross Atkins that’s on his players um so there’s a number of things to get into there they got rained out at Fenway and now they get the Yankees in town tonight judge already has 30 home runs in June I saw that I I thought that was a typo like I this guy is on a might do it again noodles like he’s on a heater to chase 62 again like the guy is 6’9 he’s a monster and he just mashes home runs but I will say this 30 yes 30 dingers 30 he’s no Jeter he’s no Jeter that is that roster I saw trending on Twitter today that was something else his dating line was circulating and it’s the greatest of all time I’m sorry it’s Gretzky plus Jordan plus Brady there’s there’s just no one that’s ever had a better rotation maybe DiCaprio or Clooney like that’s the only no way I don’t think so though I don’t think I think Jeter is live I don’t know man I don’t know Jeter’s in a different world I want somebody to do that I mean not being like I just feel like DiCaprio is has been a guy cuz he’s I think he’s like Jack like a lifelong bachelor right and I think the same thing with uh with Clooney those cl’s married now George Clooney’s been married for a while now but I mean that when that guy back in the day I would say like those there’s a Mount Rushmore out of Hollywood like that would be but this Jeter when he was single on the scene that’s yeah Jeter listen he was living a great life short stop for the Yankees winning world series you know he had a penthouse I think in like the upper east or upper west not that I was tracking this guy’s life daily living vicariously through him but uh jeters he’s in the Hall of Fame for a reason I guess he still got a vendetta against the one guy that didn’t vote for him to go in he should yeah well I agree I mean obviously he was a first ballot unanimous Hall of Famer but it is weird Cooper Town’s got a different history where there’s always been this belief that you can’t go in unanimously like the first one I think that ever did I want to say k Ripken was like the first guy to go in unanimously and maybe Tony Gwyn did maybe Marian Rivera but like even like babut didn’t get a like unanimous vote and Hank Aaron and Willie Mays like something it’s some goofy like you got to wait you can’t get in right away type of movement that used to happen in the past that clearly has been broken and should be because there are guys that naturally should go into the Hall of Fame because of who they are and what they represent but I think Jeter was speaking on that recently saying he’s still bent out of shape which is a pretty wild mentality like you’re in you’ve had an unbelievable life you got 200 million in the bank your your dating profile is probably the most yeah profile of all time right the most adored and most celebrated and yet you still just want to strangle a guy who writes for like the Cincinnati Inquirer dude they got to have a hatred it’s just like Michael Jordan like George Carl said he was at a restaurant and kind of gave Jordan kind of a hello and Jordan took it as that guy’s disrespecting me so he hated on them and wanted to just cave them in the next game because because of some weird gesture that George Carl thought he was being polite and Jordan spun it into but this is different this is actually factual stuff this is like this guy did not vote for Jeter but you would think after a while like just one day coming in your front door cuz the guy’s property must be extravagant you would sit on your couch and you’d say I forget about that yeah maybe I’ll let that one go I’ll let that slide yeah I don’t think about that anymore right yeah let it go let it go come on Derek Let It Go but there are people that are pissed off and like Jeter you I mean you hold a grudge like I I don’t know there is there somebody in your life that you’ve held a grudge for 20 years on I can’t think of anybody personally I mean I I I don’t think so um maybe I need a grudge should I create one like who can I create a grudge against here to try say there is somebody who like I have a small Grudge I don’t care I’ve seen the guy since but like there was a guy who took a shot at me yeah like early in my career and I thought it it was unwarranted it was unwarranted because I got I got second star of the game and the guy still found a way to take a shot at me I thought that was greasy you know so greasy it was really and I also like that that there’s a legendary guy in Montreal too was that red Kelly or whatever recently F red fer was it I didn’t like that guy everyone L red Fisher he took a shot at me too I was like the hell with you he was so cuz we tied we tied two all one night and he was like how can the the lowly Canadians beat can’t even beat this pigeon basically like that’s what he was saying like the hell with you you old codger yeah I have no time for that guy what do I care what red red whatever his name is I don’t that guy I know he was a legendary writer and all of that type of stuff but he disrespected me I don’t need to show him respect I couldn’t agree with you more there’s two grudges I got for you all right well we got we’re down two already there’s got to be more it sounds like well let’s go digg in here let’s get you into the psychiatrist seat here and oh and I will just talk probably got one you probably have something yeah you already know it it’s Fergie yeah oh yeah Fergie is like the most famous in the history of Toronto Sports Med neither confirm or deny it’s just nonsense stuff he did and yeah yeah but that’s he just did some stupid stuff he fired Scotty McKay one of the best trainers in the NHL that is number one on my list and that I’ll never forgive him for CU that was ridiculous and then he just did a bunch of stupid stuff my shoulder was completely blown out but just for some reason it was just known to everyone but it I I’m not getting into it cuz I’m live like I don’t know I would guess there’s a good chance I’m on the other side of a grudge there’s probably oh yeah there’s somebody that hates your guts because 100% yeah 100% like I I have enough self-awareness to know that that there’s someone in this city probably multiple people that really are not my biggest fan but what are you going to do you know you got to you got to call them as you see them and uh that’s what we’re going to do today here we got John Cooper coming up we got Bobby Mack coming up we got some action also the the Raptors are on the o00 it’s such it’s so weird that the second round’s at 4:00 um and bronny went undrafted so if bronny James gets drafted by the Raptors either at 31 they made a trade with Sacramento today too and they got the 45th pick and a couple of other players they take him at 31 or 45 we’re on it we are on it because the whole thing now is where is brony going where is this guy going how’s Lebron going to react to it what is Rich Paul gonna say about it and um you know beyond that it’s a second round of a draft you know not what where are the Lakers selecting in all of this madness they are later in the round they’re 55 they picked so they they could literally like is LeBron powerful enough where he can rig this so the Lakers are picking bronny James at 54 I don’t think riged I don’t think he’s not powerful enough to tell another team not to touch him I don’t think this is in junior hockey where he’s not going to show up it’s still LeBron but like are the Lakers taken this guy at 54 cuz I don’t think from what I’ve heard in the reports that you read that this guy is good enough for other teams are saying we got to get him before that I think teams are probably like take them have them you know what I mean like didn’t he only practice for LA and Phoenix like like two teams so basically like if he was that good wouldn’t you practice for a few more like wouldn’t other teams go unless bronnie said don’t even bother he’s coming to La so don’t even you know he might have put that out through his agent going you know he’s he’s coming to LA or he’s not coming out of school or whatever you know like there might be some sort of back channeling but I I’d be shocked but I’d like to see I don’t know why I want the Raptors to grab him like I do yeah I’m kind of intrigued by the idea of grabbing them like what else are you doing with the 45th pick just get know you on an unnecessary media circus like why not we’re in the media yes I do why not give us a chance to see bronny play I don’t what we’re in I am not starting shows with nonsense about a guy that can barely play in the league that would be like just starting the show with Malachi Flynn news when he was playing for the Raptors and it was like you can’t even play so what are we talking about here I don’t need a I’ll give I’ll take a media circus around a superstar you want to give me a stud I’ll do a media circus I’m not doing one over a guy that can’t play and that’s valid you know like a honestly that’s valid like the reason so you’re warned Do’s warned if he ends up a raptor don’t even think about it if you want to do a segment on bronny James to start every Thursday or something no way well you know what happens let me paint you a picture this is go ahead try to talk me into be to a brwy segment the first thing we hear is he’s moving in with Drake he’ll be living with Drake when he gets up here that’s a lck garbage I’m too that like for the first couple years while it gets acclimated to the city he’ll be living on the bridal path with Drake do you think his dad would let him move in with Drake are you I would he shouldn’t I don’t know he and Drake are very close yes like when a when a kid moves out of the family home to go play professional sports it’s like a it’s an important sign off in life where things got to be taken care of I lived with John and Pam Bosco in Simsbury Connecticut a great family you don’t move in with Drake Well maybe can you imagine if I moved in with Drake and Hartford dude I would be in jail yeah yeah that would be outrageous the idea of you trying to keep up with Drake because you’d have to right Drake’s not going to change his life because of Jeff O’Neal living in his basement dude I guarantee you at those during those times it might not have been issue keeping up but it would just be next level there was enough nonsense to go around but I did not need to be living in Drake’s house it’s not about keeping up exactly it’s about you know you need a game day nap and it’s uh you know there’s some sort of themed party that afternoon you’re like uh can we tone it down a little bit here yeah you’re trying to take a nap there’s 38 people in his pool outside right I think bronnie moves right into the Brattle path and takes over 905 even that not even that you couldn’t even talk me into saying we got find interesting at a minimum that’s not would not start the show with bronny James moved in with Drake come up with something different how much oxygen did we waste on that Lavar ball and his kids a ton a ton you know that guy was a dud I mean I think one of their kids one of lamelo is decent isn’t he you know what if you said bronny James is buddies with Austin Matthews and he moved in with him I would find that interesting maybe okay well maybe we can make that work I don’t know I don’t know if Austin’s you know family friends with the James family yeah Lam lamelo can play Lonzo can play he’s just hurt all the like his knees have completely he’s done I don’t think I’m not sure how much he’ll play the rest the dad was like painful but he’s quieted down like a a lot Lavar I haven’t heard from that guy in years I haven’t either I haven’t in a long long time remember they had that failed shoe company that’s what it was like that big baller brand there were like 400 people that bought shoes that’s what killed it people would ask him like all right what’s the update literally how many shoes and he’d say 400 like all right well I think you’re the next fil there one his son wouldn’t wear them Lonzo wouldn’t wear them lonzo’s like I’m wearing Jordans man I’m not wearing these you nuts not blowing my achilles up for the Big B brand no chance I’m doing that um all right so we’re tracking the the Raptor pick at 31 of 45 Jay’s Yankees tonight Ross Atkins at 5 30 John Cooper’s coming up and again the NHL is in Vegas and I guess Ken Holland’s not in Vegas because he’s left the Oilers and like interesting timing because Jeff Jackson and and Jeff’s a straight shooter like Jeff’s a very very straight shooter um and we have some audio that we’ll play throughout the afternoon it does seem like the timing is tough like Jackson is capable of making these moves and they have other members of the front office working with him obviously and he has his finger on the trigger for any big move that’s going to happen but he did admit like he wants to get a GM pretty quickly you know so um I don’t know if that don’t you think don’t you think that they would have a GM in place I’m pretty sure I guess that’s what I’m saying is it because they got to The Cup Final like what are you going to do is you know how do you interview peopley kind tough that’s the thing it’s kind of tough like you would think if they were done a month ago it would probably be an or you know Ken Holland was I saw him I talked to him the other day on Monday G like tough for Jeff Jackson to be interviewing like hey I’m not available this afternoon I’m interviewing your replacement like it’s kind of I think that was kind of done a long time ago you can’t get a new GM a day before a draft Ken Holland no the thing is is Ken Holland I think there was an opportunity for him to probably stay too that’s the thing is contract’s up it mutually like I think they left it up to him and he probably said I’m out like he G he put his five years in I get the impression that Jeff Jackson and Company have kind of been running things anyways you know what I mean like Ken Holland’s the figurehead he’s an experienced guy uh but you know some of the moves did wreak of you know a a group not just one individual making a making a call like right and Jackson’s at the top anyway so you know it’s kind of like last year where dubas left you know a little bit later than they thought then they had to hire someone and you know there was some concern here like can the new guy figure it out quick enough to make adjustments and I’m I’m not sure in fact I think I know Trey living did not have enough time to really put a stamp on things that said Shanahan was still here and the other front office members were still here um you know as for the leaves they’ve been quiet other stuff’s going on around the league you know other Dakota Joshua signed in Vancouver it’s Ryan sud is going to be bought out in Dallas Jackson was speaking today about the possibility of them buying out Jack Campbell and you know there’s the sharks are trying to accumulate higher picks they get the first pick and the 11th pick now they made a move to move up so other teams are are in in on the ACT and so far the Leafs have been pretty quiet um well I I mean that move that Ryan sudor move to save 1.4 million says they’re trying to scrape together every ounce of money to either give to Chris tanov or somebody else like that’s the you know by all accounts Chris tanov like Dallas wants to keep him and I know if he goes to Market he’s going to have a lot of suitors and I would be shocked if the Le were an in on him if he went to market right yeah well Carlo today said he’s convinced that tf’s coming up here well I mean said that on the morning show this morning I I mean if he hasn’t signed right now why wouldn’t you wait a few days to figure stuff out right unless but Dallas is moving and shaking Carlo The Insider yeah Insider Carlo eh he’s on it he’s got tan of coming up listen it’s easy to link the two you know tree living knows him likes him wanted them at the trade deadline that’s our understanding TV’s from here it’d be a good fit I’m I’m a little bit apprehensive of a four or fiveyear deal very apprehensive I mean he’s 34 he’ll be 35 a lot of injuries I don’t know like that’s one where you got to I think you got to play poker a little bit if you’re the Leafs if he really wants to be a leaf and come home it’s it’s got to be a shorter term deal I yeah I’m I’m on the other way Brian I think that these I think right now the currency is turn oh yeah there’s no there’s no deals here saying you want this because he can just say why would on Earth would I do that when I can get X somewhere else they’re not I know I know what you’re thinking is but I don’t know if that’s available if you want a player like that it was noodles is mentioning the currency for defenseman I think if it’s like well we can’t do this we want to go shorter term it’s just check please I’m going to the next one I I I I think what it is now and I was talking about it yesterday with the stampco situation if Tampa wants to keep him and he wants to stay you figure out what his number is and then you’re going to have to do the ltir or chew on something at the end of it like I I I go back to go back a couple years to keep Ryan newon Hopkins you know Edmonton Ken Holland gave him what was it eight-year deal like you know at some point that’s not going to look great but he’s like I got Ryan neon Hopkins who followed up with 100 Point Season at 5.25 right so now he was 27 when understand I understand like I’m talking about his age not the player I like T don’t get me wrong I’d love I’d love to have him but I I’m just saying like it wouldn’t shock me like that we’re going to see some like crazy things happen here where it’s like hey you know Steven Stamkos is is 34 years old he signs a seven-year deal you know and and to put a bunch of money in his pocket and he goes on ltir the last three years of it well that is possible as long as the players willing to abide by that that that’s the wikwik n because if the player is 39 and goes I’m not going anywhere I want to keep playing then you got a Patrick maros situation on your hands yeah and you’re like great we’re paying this guy 7 million he can’t play anymore what are we supposed to do agree that’s it’s dangerous it it could work out but it it also could burn you um longterm not shortterm all right John Cooper coming up Bob McKenzie today Pier LeBron from the draft um we got Rowan Barrett on the Canadian team coming together here in Toronto they’re going to the Olympics as we know and Ross sacks in just over an hour with the Yankees in town tonight overdrive continues TSN 1050 and on TSN 2 all right John Cooper coming up here in a moment of the Tampa Bay Lightning and Team Canada he’ll be the head coach for the four nations cup or faceof whatever the hell it’s called in a year from now and the Olympic Games in a couple of years and the top six for Canada US Finland Sweden for the four nations faceof will be announced tomorrow so I’m sure they already know who’s going in maybe Coupe can give us a little tease oh yeah maybe we’ll Grill him and ask if mcdavid’s going to be on the team see what he has to say about that on the bubble what if he’s like yeah he’s on the bubble think bubble guy just some details on that that’s played in that’s replacing the allstar game so that’s like in February yeah it’ll be in Fab it’s in Montreal and then in Boston so um yeah cool places cool places great places great places I think you’ll get great support um yeah it’s going to be cool like I I’m I’m embracing that over the All-Star Game whatever it’ll be a week week and a half and best on best and it’ll be on the players to amp it up and buy into it and I think as it goes on it will get there I think there will be animosity there will be you know it’ll be physical it’ll be fast it’ll be the best players in the world going at it some of them some of them yes you’re right dry cider won’t be there barov won’t be there but but you know what they’re trying and they’re you know they’re seeing what they can do I would take that I don’t know how many games are they guaranteed I guess three playing three yeah you’re going to play every team and then there’s I think a semifinal regardless and then into a final but yeah I don’t know the full details they’re trying and and remember early on was it the team Europe or whatever they looked like a mess and they ended up you know got to the final the World Cup in 16 yeah exactly so that’s going on tomorrow and tonight are the awards and we’re still waiting to see who’s going to win the heart the vzna The Calder the nor um the Ted Lindsay you know a number of the awards were announced you know during the playoffs but I think it’s a lock huk wins the vzna yeah and is going to win the Norris I think Bedard will win the Calder I think he will oh he’s a lock yeah he’s a yeah I mean he had that injury but I think you’re right I think he will be it’s either him or the the kid in Minnesota I think Faber has a possibility but I think it’ll be Bedard uh and then the heart I think it’ll be K and I get that impression that’s where it was going and that’s how kind of people felt it should go but that’s had a different vibe all year like there’s some people that swear COV is winning the I think it’s coov you think it be COV tonight I I think it’s COV but maybe maybe I’m wrong keep in mind like he dragged Tampa they had no starting goal tender for two months and like either there’s no bad choice there between McKinnon and COV I think McKinnon was all world and what did he have the 30 was it 34 games at home in a row of points like some sort of did yeah a crazy run crazy run and COV hit 100 assists like McDavid did it you know a few days before him but COV did it that last game of the season remember that was kind of electric it was pretty cool and guy had 100 assists and his stats like he trumped the rest of the team and that’s a team with guys like point and um you know stamp Coast had a good year and Hegel had a good year and this guy still was like lopping the field on his own team yeah uh pretty incredible season the one that coer of just had um so yeah we’ll get John Cooper on here in a moment we’ll ask him about that like we know he’s rooting for CRA obviously tonight but what was that like up close in personal because he saw it a few years ago when he won the MVP I think he won the heart 19 when they won those 62 games and he had like 127 points I think he won the Art Ross that year and he won the heart and um yeah we were just talking about that with Bob like bosski is moving towards the Hall of Fame career I think he solidified it COV is already there like COV if he wins a heart tonight he could retire after the award show and he goes in right two hearts two two he already would go in yeah yeah he’s already in that’s how good this guy is um and it’s a question of where he’s going to rank all time for Russian players I think Obie’s going to be a defined number one um you know maybe some of the guys in the 70s 80s F off even like you know like there are some great like I got to say noodles like pavl bu datuk they’re all unbelievable but I would take coov just watching him the last couple years like really closely I would take him over any of those like old so Dynamic it did the game is different though that’s what it is but with COV the game like I’m telling you John can speak to it a lot more but there’s times where I’ve watched Tampa play where I I feel like kucherov has been at full stride maybe five times in a game because he just slows things down and controls the pace he knows where the Puck’s going it’s so impressive to watch him play I played with some good PP guys and he’s the best power play quarterback I’ve ever seen in my life period other than 99 well it’s pretty wild what he did this year 100 assists um let’s head down there now he is the head coach of the Tampa Bay Lightning and now he’s the head coach of Team Canada here’s John Cooper how you doing John what’s up boys hey before we get going I don’t want to hear cooch off and retirement ever in the same sentence would you agree though if he did he goes right into the Hall of Fame in three years Ian he’s probably already done it oh he’s uh he’s a special one there is no doubt about it I’ve always said this if I coach another player or if I coach a player better than COV I want to see it because he’s uh he’s brilliant it’s the only way I can put it he’s just a brilliant ho player yeah like a 100 assists and it com at I believe it was Game 82 I was watching it live I’m pretty sure it was Game 82 it was which okay so you take you know games during the year you always remember opening night that’s kind of like the exciting game and then basically any of the games in between you don’t remember them unless you know something incredibly special happens but you’re just trying to win games that was the most exciting game 82 I think I’ll ever be a part of and for a couple reasons CU Austin was going for 70 MH yeah cooch was going for a 100 and it was Electric in the building and so it was uh you know cooch got it in the second period at some point and you know it it was crazy because Matthews could have had six that night I mean I I never saw a kid have worse lock the puck going in the net and uh but it was just it was such an exciting night and um you know I sit back now and and and we ended up winning that hockey game but uh there was a little part of me tugging that said well if they were going to score goals you want to get a shout out every night but if there were goals going to be scored by Toronto you know I was kind of pulling for Austin to get one of them CPE is there any sense when a guy has a year like that like are you having an exit meeting with him like what the hell are you going to say to that guy like I thought you were way better than everyone in the league is that is that necessary for an exit meeting cuz I wasn’t a fan of them to begin with but what does that exit meeting even sound like he uh you know you were talking about it earlier about you know players that that can slow the game down do you know do they do these special things but he you know because people he’s a he’s a great skater but he never really has to burst out and go full speed because he brings the entire game to his pace and I just have never seen anybody do that in in the way he can he just controls everything that happens and you know you were talking about the power play you don’t he doesn’t get like that by just natural abilities truly he works at it and I watch him you know five days a week in the summer and he’ll just you know he may just stand in his track pants but he’ll just take you know pucks off the yellow that are rimmed and just that’s it that’s all he does maybe just just does it for an hour but he it’s all these touches he gets and as you said what makes him unique is how we can take a puck off the yellow which I think maybe the common viewer thinks is easy to do but it’s not and to be able to make that backhand pass through people all the time and get it to whether he’s getting it to H or or who he’s making that pass to it’s uh it’s it’s unlike anything I’ve seen and there’s some great ones in the league trust me like there’s so many good players in the league but um yeah you know to get back to your exit it’s like yeah okay what do you say might be better next year yeah I think there’s stupid anyway Coupe it’s just like everybody knows the deal you either had a good year or bad year I thought I thought those meetings were ridiculous I’m I’m on your side of that one yeah thank you um with John Cooper so you’re the head coach of Canada for the four nations Faceoff and the Olympic Games in 2026 um congratulations on that I think the three of you I think all of us the three of us and most of Canada if not all of Canada saw this one coming considering your track record and your resume but you’ve been a club coach now if you want to call it that in Tampa for a long time and you know in lower levels how will coaching the national team possibly be different than coaching a a club team down in Tampa well it’s uh it’s so hard to explain because you thankful for the opportunity to get it again because you just never know you never know what’s going to happen three or four years later if you’re in the same situation if you’re coaching the same NHL team uh and to get this opportunity um you know that there hasn’t been like legit and we can talk the World Cup but that was you know the best players weren’t playing for their countries you know like and with with what team Marth American team Europe so really this is a the first one since 2014 I think so this is a long time and there there’s a lot of players in this league that haven’t played you know aside from World Juniors and stuff like that really international hockey and so to be a part of this it’s like so damn exciting I I’m I’m just you know blessed that it this gets to happen again but um there’s a difference because I I sit there and I and I think we can all attest to this when you’re down in your basement and you’re you little kid and you’re watching Hockey Night in Canada and then you’re running downstairs and you’re scoring the game-winning goal and game seven of overtime and you’re raising the Stanley Cup and it your you know that’s it it’s a very fortunate that dream got to come true for me but you really look back at like hockey history and especially being in Canada and the fabric of what we’ve grown up with and you think about Paul Henderson and you think about 87 Canada Cup and the 365 and the overtimes and um it it’s you think about Sydney Crosby and the Golden Goal in 2010 like these are massive moments in hockey history of getting to represent your country and I think there’s no event that’s more watched in the world you know we say whatever about the World Cup is a big thing but when you get to the Olympics everybody’s eyes are in Olympics and to have that opportunity to wear you know the the flag on your chest and what it is meant to me in my entire lifetime and watching all these moments and being a Notre Dame and great 10 or whatever it was and having them shut the school down and bring the PB in so we could watch the Olympics like that’s what it’s all about and so I do not take this assignment lately I’m uh I’m so thankful I have it but you know this is a this is a job where you know going to do everything in my power to make sure that we put this team in the best you know position to succeed and I’m just uh super fired up to be a part of it coup there’s going to be some slam dunk SEL c s there’s some of the best players in the world that are just going to be on the team but when it comes to the selection of let’s say the third or fourth line right winger do you think that will come down to what you want as the coach between player X and player y well I I’ll have a big part of it there’s no doubt um you know the Olympic teams you know Doug Armstrong’s the guy and is going to be a great management staff surrounded by him um you know Don Sweeney and and Jim nil in the four nations and I think there’s a culmination of of things are going to happen in between then and you know I look back when you know three years ago when we were going through this process we’ve gone deep into the process so you we’ met as a staff in B Alberta for a week we you know dotted the eyes crossed the teas we knew everybody knew each other I knew the staff uh trainers equipment and it was a great a great great time to prep all the co coaches got together and then we’d whittel the team down now that’s the team wasn’t picked by no means but you we’ whittel it down to like 30 guys and it’s uh like you said I mean there’s probably some no-brainers on that team um but it there it is a puzzle and there are going to be pieces to it and you know the same guys that were probably in some of the mix couple years ago you know you just you look at some of these young kids that have come up and you knowy there’s guys knocking at the door so it’ll be it’s kind of an exciting process to go through and I think you know that the four nations is you know people say well is that a pre curses the Olympics or what are you calling that and I’m just saying you know what we’ve got two years to put this team together for the Olympics and and I think that the four nations is a great you know it’s going to be a great event to be you know kind of peak into what we’re going to see in the Olympics uh but I do know one thing is when the puck drops in that four nations everybody’s going to go game to win it um but it’s uh I think you know this whole everything leading up to Olympics is going to be uh kind of a fun time have you allowed yourself to kind of just uh mock up a little bit of a lineup or maybe some lines that you you’ve thought about maybe in the back of your head going no that would be nice to have that guy play with that guy it’s probably a little early to to start doing all that kind of stuff and I think you know there’s going to be some players named on the teams here you know coming up in the in the coming weeks but uh it is you think about some of the Marquee players in the league and I think every coach that’s going to be behind the bench for their country um you know to get to you know some of these players you’re going to get to work with and you know call their name and and really see up close you know how gifted they are and and that’s the exciting part for me is to put all these pieces of the puzzle with the best players in the world and that’s it’s going to be so much fun to watch these guys compete and like I said you know these guys have been competing for a Stanley Cup every year but it’s been quite some time now for them to to ever be able to perform for their country and I I think the guys are really looking forward to it with John Cooper um in terms of choosing the captain everything you said about the history of playing for Canada that captaincy speaks to that as well how do you intend on on making that choice well and anything that is going on and moving forward here I think the great thing of any team’s success is the collaboration of everyone and yes am I on the phone right now doing the interview with you as the head coach I am but there’s so many more people involved in this and and people that have been watching these games and been around these players um and and know what the fabric of what they being is about um but you know ultimately you know these teams whatever country it is are going to be full of captains mhm and and so it’s uh you know I think there’s that’s a position that you can’t take lightly and uh what’s great about Canada there’s a plethora of leaders and I think the one thing that you know is a a duty for all of us is we all have to check every he goes at the door and you know somebody will be named captain uh but it’ll be a effort from coaches management everybody that uh comes in and chooses that one yeah well including yourself right where you’re I don’t know who’s on your staff yet but we’ve spoken to past head coaches and past assistant coaches and like you may have you know maybe Rod brymore is running the forwards and you’re going to look down on rod and say what are you doing you know like what are we what are we doing here that’s Rod brymore you know like that’s going to be probably a transition for you as well right where it’s you know generally it’s a lot of great head coaches that fill out the staff it works the other way too assistants might be looking at me going cou what the hell are you doing right here right it’s gonna be great to uh to work with all these guys and and you know I’ve been in the league for a little while now and and there’s a it’s crazy because we’re all competing against each other but there’s a great admiration for everyone and you know for instance I got ask you know somebody asked me well how’ you feel about Florida winning and they were a deserving Champion they you know even though they’re in our state it’s they had a hell of a team they did a great job uh a deserving winner that game could have gone either way in game seven and and you would have crowned a great Champion but you know you cheer for guys and it was uh to be honest it was great to see you know you want to have that Cup every year you want to win it and you want your name on it every single year but probably unrealistic and you want good people to win it and there’s some good people in this league but watching you know Paul mace rais it up over his head I uh I was really happy for him yeah that was a really really cool scene um not that we’ve been paying attention in Canada but five straight Cup finals for teams from Florida like it’s a bit much Coupe if you could just slow down down there this a little Annoying yeah it’s getting a bit annoy it’s a little bit annoying up here um you know what though it says says a little you know people say that to me about the Florida thing but it says something about the Atlantic division I’ll tell you that yeah that is for sure that is absolutely for sure uh well congrats you know on on being anointed head coach Team Canada next year at the four nations faceof and then at the Olympic Games as well it’ll be a blast to track all this and uh enjoy the off season as well we appreciate you doing this hey thanks guys yeah it’s a little weird doing this one in June usually we’re mid-season doing this uh little segment so um I’ll see you guys down the road you got it there he is John Cooper the Tampa Bay Lightning and of Team Canada so he’s excited that’s cool cool as he should be it’s an unbelievable honor to be the head coach at Canada at the Olympics that’s an incredible honor and he’s welld deserving he’s a great coach yeah he’s an elite coach and you know he’ll choose the right team I’m sure there was I guarantee you he’s already mocked up some stuff and we had I was going to bring up that McKinnon was talking about playing with Sid on the power play all of that type of stuff like I think he would like that I I think he would like that because it would be on their mind as opposed to just be like all right when is that thing when I got to show up to that listen that’s I think that’s a huge benefit for Canada historically how much it means to people up here of course especially the players that well 100% the players that’s that’s what I’m saying I guess is the players like of course the fans care the me but the idea that the players realize like we got to get this we have to get this and we’re jacked for it that’s a huge benefit I don’t know if that applies everywhere else sure I’m sure there’s some countries and some Nations that some of the players are like when is that thing by the way when do we got to show up to that exactly exactly and Canada that just that doesn’t doesn’t happen and that’s a huge benefit to have or this one the Nations cup or whatever they’re like I don’t want to play at it they want the break during the season right you know CU it’s what if if you win what do you get you know like that’s there are guys who don’t care about anything else other than just getting through the 82 games and trying to win a Stanley Cup or it’s just putting the Jersey on when I played in the World Juniors I think they won four or five World J juniors in a row and then when our team put the Jersey on it was like are we really going to be watching all of that like the year after year and the the grittiness and the clutch and we’re not going to do it you don’t want to be the team that doesn’t do it m yeah and that’s why the players care so much they have all the memories Gretzky to Lemieux cydney Crosby Golden Goal all the world junior memories they want to just they want to and obviously there’s been a bunch of upsets too there’s been some shellacking and teams that go to World Championships World Juniors that embarrass themselves but it seems like it’s a one-off for the most part and it’s just nobody wants that absolutely uh so thanks again to John Cooper all right we got Bobby Mack coming up Bob McKenzie in about 15 minutes Ross Atkins at 5:30 overdrive continues TSN 1050 and on TSN 2 all right the second round of the NBA draft continuing Raptors taking jacobe Walters yesterday with that 19th pick and uh Zach Edy went ninth to Memphis the uh toron boy so Memphis ended up taking I didn’t think he was going to go in the top 10 but he did so uh congrats to Zach eedy and bronny is still on the board and available as the second round continues so no news on bronny James but keep you updated on that um Jay Yankees tonight Ross Atkins in about a half an hour so Ross doing the rounds today we’ll see what he has to say about the first half of the Year trade deadlines a month away think he’s feeling the heat yeah of course he is I mean he knows he knows what’s going on he know like you just look at the record and the way they’ve played ball it just that’s Troublesome when you had playoff expectations right like if if this was a transition Ser season or you’re young or something or you know you’re not going to be that good then I I guess you can weather the storm but um they’re 36 and 43 and they thought they’d be in the playoffs right so you know the Yankees are in town tonight they’re 14 and a half games back of the Yankees and it’s June yeah so you know do the math yeah the do the math do the math as our boy Rick Bushwood might say do the math yeah it’s not good no it’s not all right Bobby Mack coming up NHL draft tomorrow night we’ll get Bob’s take on what he sees happening for the Canadian teams where does it gin end up going right Jerome will be down there Jerome will be there I guess at the Flames table yes is he at the Flames table and then if if his kid gets drafted by someone else what’s the protocol on maybe a fist bump on the way by is it a fist that’s a good question I was texting with an hour ago I forgot to ask about that I should I’ll find out I’ll find out to see what they’re what they’re going to do with that yeah ask him what he does CU he’ll be at the table does he get up does he fist pump like I don’t know I’m sure he’ll be ecstatic of course he will be but um all right well we’ll see what Bobby Mack can tell us about that and Ross Atkins coming up in the next hour as well overdrive continues TSN 1050 and on the TSN Out for

Leafs should go after both Tanev brothers
Yeah I feel a bit bad for Tij Iginla because u probably want to go to Calgary but at the same time u know with social media etc u have to hide your emotions because if it looks like ur disappointed/devastated that's going to be on Twitter etc for eternity in two secs flat.
Cheese wIZ
C'mon TSN, get someone else to post these videos who will do it properly. Why do some titles say what hour of the show it is and others don't? Wtf? Not to mention no hour 1 posted yesterday at all, just a horrid job by whoever is responsible.
Christmas
Grow with wind doll Mars bar jjj 🎉
Yanks are too old – DJ rizzo Stanton all broken down …
Barkov will be there, he's a Finn, right?
Without a doubt, their agent Rich Paul talked to other teams, telling them not to take Bronny. I bet the common reply was "wasn't planning too"
And Lonzo did wear the BBB shoes. Apparently he went through couple pairs a game. And mightve lead to injuries
Again, with what cap space will the Leafs be able to pursue Chris Tanev if they keep Marner's $10.93M cap hit on the books?
I FUCKING LOVE YOU GUYS I FUCKING LAUGH MY ASS OFF BRONNIE ODOG ANDS DRAKE LETS THROW IN DIDDY AND WE GOIT A PARTY
Haven't the Leafs been burned enough in the past with mid-30's players? They can quickly lose a step in a fast league
I've hated Hayes for twenty years….nah he's allright
Leafs suck
This Leafs core has handcuffed any hope of change.
O-Dog 😂
Hey TSN, you need to segment the timeline with what the hosts are talking about so we dont have to scroll for an hour looking for it…
i've wore high cuts my whole life mostly because i like how they cover the anklebone.
So long as the Leafs keep selling out every game, they will never win. Especially in the Mathews era. They sell out each game and use the core 4 for merchandising pretty much. That's all MLSE cares about is selling out the arena and merchandise, NOT WINNING.
He’s coming back to Calgary.
Toronto has no choice but to throw offers all over and see what sticks. When guys go Ufa they often prefer stateside and Vancouver is close to signing Zadorov. Is Tanev the best choice at 35? Not when he gets injured.
Why not give Tanev term here? We have Robidas Island, if need be.
Too old.
Tanev will be 35 when the playoffs start next season. Great retirement contract for him to come home to Toronto.
