Taylor Montgomery reflects on impressive Round 1 in Detroit | Golf Central | Golf Channel
https://www.youtube.com/golfchannel?sub_confirmation=1
golf Central on YouTube is brought to you by the new Chrome tour golf ball from Callaway welcome into golf Central I’m Whit Watson joined by trip eisenhauer Ricky Fowler is back to defend his title at the rocket mortgage classic in Detroit let’s take a look at some Thursday highlights from Fowler starting off with his third shot at 14 Well Ricky Fowler after nine straight pars left himself in a good position to attack this flag over on the right and well we’re going to rase nine pars with a birdie there at 14 fouler off to a good start in his title defense now his third this is at 16 yeah this is 16 ft actually in a distance he has not been putting well this season but the Puma hats the orange ones they all approve Fowler moving on to 17 and his second going for it at the par five 266 yards away had to step on the five wood and I really like the way he’s swinging four rounds in the 60s last week at Travelers and the game traveled to Detroit to defend easy two putt there two birdie there at 17 and then a chance for birdie at the 18th again that distance 10 to 15 ft he was very proficient round number one if that continues Ricky could defend so Fowler posting 66 as he defends his title at Rocket mortgage the last win for him on the PGA tour trying to get inside the number to make it to the FedEx Cup playoffs and at the moment he is on the outside looking in so a good start a really good start for AE batia today this was a birdie putt at 12 well he had a lot of them with 17 in fact hit 17 Greens in regulation and uh that’s one of the circles he had a lot of those as well and now this on 14 with a chance for Bird yeah 16 ft away left it a little short of this flag smart to be aggressive up the hill and he is moving up to the 16th and batia the Lefty with his second shot yeah drove the ball fine 10 Fairways here these are some narrow Fairways so this one right in the middle from 170 yards and this one to about 5 1/2 ft right behind the hole and let’s put another circle on the scorecard let’s try it again at 17 how about the double circle this is the third shot at the par five you stole my thunder wit double circle that’s right that’s what you do when you chiping for Eagle only two Eagles at the 17th there’s one of them by our leader he was sizzling on the back nine today this the second shot at the 18 yeah you see missed the Fairway but in the first cut not a problem look at this little draw that’s a trap draw he’s trying to hit he’ll describe the shot yeah I was trying to hit this little trap draw in there right there flag High exactly what he did yeah that’s what you did yeah trap draw and that’s going to lead to well with let’s just have another Circle party 64 for BA who Begins the week 15th in the FedEx Cup if he were to win this week he’d go inside the top 10 hit 17 greens just 27 putts required and met the media after his round yeah puted great uh I guess I missed one green today so I got that up and down um but all in all you know I hit it pretty nice with the irons and made some putts and Driver three-wood didn’t feel too good but you know I got some time to go work on that and you’re coming off a strong finish last week in Hartford how much is do you feel is carrying over from that and that you’re building upon this week yeah I’ve been playing good the last three weeks I mean I I feel like the results haven’t been where I’ve wanted wanted them to be but I’ve been playing pretty solid I’ve been right there you know for uh you know over 40 holes I would say the last couple weeks it’s just I’m having some hiccups uh either Saturday or Sunday so I’m just trying to figure that out but you know it’s it’s nice to uh be in this position Taylor Montgomery had himself a day on Thursday as well this is his third shot at 17 yeah 17 the par fives you got to take advantage of these and well he does just that that’s his second Birdie on the par FS on the back nine got that nice and snuggly and then second shot at the 18 he began his day on 10 yeah he did so making the turn very quickly he’s had five birdies so far so let’s do the math the best putter on the PGA tour I’m going to give him that one with six birdies we turn in third so over to the front nine his third shot at seven well we took a little break we had six straight bars but that’s fine uh there’s our seventh birdie of the day and that’s how we’d finish Montgomery with a 7 under 65 if it ended today he’d move up 28 spots in the FedEx Cup race but it’s not over lot of golf left look at that 30 on his first nine today after the round he spoke with Todd Lewis yeah what a day for Taylor MC you go out in 30 and just one Birdie on the back nine still no Bogies on the car how would you describe the difference between the front and the your second nine um well my caddy said the back nine was like a shot harder he thought and then I didn’t know what to expect I haven’t played much golf in the last two months and went out there and surprised myself um are you satisfied with where you played today how would you describe it oh of course I mean it’s better than playing bad you know or shooting 80 or whatever you can do playing this game you you see it all and uh it was nice to have a bogey free round I haven’t seen one of those in a while yeah you haven’t had the results that You’ wanted you haven’t played the weekend since the players I believe and so what is a round like this do for that belief that you know may be waning at times uh I mean first and foremost like being able to swing without pain today and like the last week mainly is is nice uh with with my shoulder problems so uh hopefully that continues and I can play like this more often even though it’s impossible to keep it up well unless you’re Scotty shuffler but it’s uh it’s nice to play good it really is finally could you describe the injuries is in both shoulders is that right both uh a lot of weird stuff I’ve changed a lot I’ve been doing this like 30 to 45 minute shoulder workout every day for about a month now and it’s helped a lot one specific exercise helped a lot and then got an MRI and that scared the hell out of me CU there was a bunch of tears but here we are playing and I’m happy to be here which shoulders both both tears in both shoulders yeah how Al difficult has this been for you uh it’s frustrating cuz you want to compete and play and I mean I want to win so bad and I’m out and can’t play and I don’t know it’s just frustrating I’m excited to be here playing well congratulations thank you so the leaderboard round one OA batia with a 64 Taylor Montgomery and Michael Kim both shot 65 there at minus 7 Ricky Fowler trying to defend his title 6 under 66 today cam young with a group at minus5 the Friday schedule is packed
