🕗 Don’t miss it! 🕗

good evening everybody and welcome back to the golfing DS Tavern tonight on The Tavern Scotty wins Tigers exempt protesters do what and you can teach an old dog new tricks let’s get it [Music] [Music] good evening everybody and welcome back to the tavern we look a little different tonight everybody say hi Brad hi Brad so uh Greg Greg is on vacation Dave will be joining us shortly I believe that was at least the last text message I got um so he will be joining us shortly but um Brad is filling in tonight with us for those of you know Brad has been on our show before Brad Mr Bradley Schubert Brad tell everybody your title so I am the besides besides the worst half to Heidi Schubert I am the halfa of Heidi Schubert yeah I’m also the president the Midwest Golf Association fut Golf Association and the uh trustee for the mid for the National npt Golf Association awesome awesome well Brad thank you for joining us tonight uh super appreciate it uh we’re in for a good show but uh Brad how’s your weekend doing well doing well it’s uh finally uh getting ready to play some golf here and uh this weekend actually I’ve got the uh Chicago District golf association’s inaugural adaptive open coming up this weekend there’ll be about 60 adaptive players playing in an event here in at cogill number three and uh we’ll be uh playing for a purse this time around so actually winners in each Sports class will be uh awarded actually prize money this this weekend I know I I our buddy Mr benza it is his member guest week I know that CU he I were texting over the weekend uh our friend Chad finished third this past week at a uh at a charity event yeah could drop a yeah um but um no uh shame they won’t be there um but uh no um yeah weekend here uh was pretty lazy um didn’t really much this weekend and we got a lot of rain this weekend so just kind of hung out around the house had some family time it was nice um but uh yeah I uh let’s jump in first round we got a lot to talk about because there was a lot that went on this weekend so let’s jump in first round here all right Brad so we’re gonna start you want to talk about tiger or do you want to talk about protesters let’s talk about tiger first first all right so Tiger’s exempt yeah um Tiger’s exempt into all of the elevated events now going forward um as decided by the PJ tour policy board um based on what he has done throughout his career um first off um we’ll go over the facts of it they’re adding two spots into the elevated event they’re adding tiger spot plus one so the elevated events will be 72 players um what’s your opinion of that you know I really the fact that they added the extra player in there besides tiger I would I would have been remissed if I thought they’re just doing this just to add Tiger but the fact that they’re adding another spot in there um kind of levels it out for me um and again putting tiger in is especially on the these events um is trying to get seat cheeks cheeks and seats and then really put that’s really what it comes down to I think some of these events that you know know tiger is only going to play in the elevated events or he’s just going to play in the majors we kind of expected that but for him to actually maybe play in a couple other events if he can go as an exempt you know it just helps it helps the ticket sales at the end of the day it helps to draw and it helps the game I agree with you on the fact that there is a it’s great that they added the two spots if they had gone and left it at 70 but tiger got a spot I think I would have had a bigger issue with it for the PJ tour um so I’m okay with him adding 72 spot making those events 72 spots you hinted at something here and I’m gonna ask the question is he gonna play in these like you can give him the exemption all you want but based on the schedule that we’ve seen from tiger and he’s had the opportunity whether it’s beill or the players to play in in March when last year he said I’m going to play once a month and then he played Riviera and then didn’t play again till the Masters so he’s had the opportunity if he wanted to play Bill he can play Bill whenever he wants to all he’s got to do is call tourament office and they’re going to be like yeah we’ll send you an exemption you’re good so the question that I have is is he gonna even show up for this or is this just a hey we’re doing this but we’re really adding two more spots to the event and that’s all we’re doing well in the in the end I hope I hope there’s a draw from it um you know I we all want tiger to be better we all want we all want to see tiger the way he was you know five six years ago um even even before then um post the injury post the car accident and everything else can he do it I I you know I think we’ve we’ve seen it we’ve seen enough evidence that he can’t walk four days in a row especially even two tournaments in a row so you know I’m kind of I’m at that point as a viewer where I’m gonna I I’m pretty pretty satisfied watching tiger for the major events I hope he gets you know one one Kno on finds lightning in a bottle and is able to to get one or two more events you know on his belt but I don’t think he’s going to be winning championships but he is he’s definitely going to be a draw if he’s there correct and that’s where I think we’re going to see tiger is if he is that draw if he is going to come in and play these events you know is it bill or the players that they let him play in um that he shows up and plays in March is this the chance to get him into you know I don’t think he if they leave the Hartford spot not knowing what’s going on with the PJ tour schedule for next year but if they leave that Hartford spot post US Open I don’t think we see him in Hartford after the US Open I don’t no um you know Bay Hill and the players make a lot of sense in that they’re flat golf courses there’s not a lot of elevation change um you can just go out there and walk the golf course and it’s really not I mean there’s a little elevation at Bill more than I’d say there’s more elevation at beay Hill than you have it at Saw Grass but you still don’t have a difficult walk of a golf course um the the other part of that question that we can probably talk about later and see if the PGA would even wants to talk about this is the Casey Martin role I mean do we wna I mean they made the exception we back when for Casey Martin with the with the cart you know even with with before he lost his leg you know would they do that for Tiger I mean I could see them with with them making a special exemption for Tiger to come out and play in these events I could see them going well tiger you can have a cart when you play two I mean knowing that issue that I have with Casey with the Casey Martin ruling and I will just go and tell you my opinion of that if you’re gonna go down the Casey barttin ruling and Brad you’ll understand this Casey barttin had a debilitating it wasn’t an injury like no it he was um and with Casey in the situation that he was in compared to Tiger getting hurt in a car acci accident I don’t necessarily know that I would go down that rule and I don’t think tiger wants to go down that rule now here’s the the other question that came up is nuclear golf posted reported today is that the champions tour is having conversations with tiger and themselves about already setting up for Tiger to play in the champions tour now I think that has a much better chance of that happening he’s almost 50 of course well yeah but ‘s the thing out on the champions tour he can ride a cart you’re not you’re looking at three-day events you’re looking at just going out and um you know I think we see more of that happening than I think you see anything else going on than him playing all these Signature Events I just don’t see it happening I really don’t unless they know something that we don’t and they haven’t L on to it which there’s always a chance because when was last time tiger was honest about his his health because the next time be the first um so I think that that will be something that we’ll we’ll have to keep an eye on as as things move forward with this yeah I and I can see once he hits 50 him playing you know Senior Tour events as well as you know the the majors at least as while he’s exempt once he’s done with the exemption he’s probably done though you know I think that we we talked this last week I think you see tiger play through 2027 in the majors um that’s the next time we’ll be at Pebble and St Andrews and I think that’s where he steps away from playing the U the the four majors on the PGA tour I think that makes a lot of sense could you imagine that getting that him waving goodbye on the swen bridge like I I think he wants that I think he deserves that for what he’s done for the game um so I think that that’s that’s actually probably the best idea uh so that’s that’s what I think we’re going to get I don’t think we get anything beyond that though um but I do think him riding in a cart playing the champ I tour I think is more of an option I actually think he’s going to do well for the champions tour in that here’s a guy who with everything that he brought to the PGA Tour and he’s really the guy that transcended the sport and did a ton in the sport um is the needle mover isn’t he’s the needle he’s not the Mover he’s the needle correct um I think he can do a lot for the Champions T increase purses increase exposure and all of that so I think it actually could be good for him to play at least a couple years out there absolutely next next conversation you and I talked then we texted um you know I think the funny part the protesters in Hartford that actually wasn’t this stop oil group also protested the DP World Tour event and blocked traffic to the point they had to delay T times on the champion on the DP World Tour for two hours for their final round on Sunday um it’s not the first time we’ve had this happen in golf you’ve had um last year at the British Open it happened Billy hell had to help the police arrest some people and then you had there was the protester running around naked was behind daily I believe it was um with the 19th Hole written there yeah and then you and then you had web Simpson and the Birdman that came out and was squawking like a bird when he won at Olympic so you’re this isn’t the first time that this has happened at any event in golf my problem is and Brad you talked to me I want to hear your opinion the bigger problem that I have is that TV already has no matter what sporting event they’re at they have plans in place so when that happens cameras don’t show what’s going on yeah is that a problem it’s as much of a problem as the guys yelling Baba buoy after every swing or um some other you know nonsense uh players when they when they there has to be a level of decorate etiquette for everybody going to a gol for mean when you have people run onto a field field of play whether it’s a baseball game or a football game or even in this case like golf course I’m glad they they arrest them and uh you know disqualify him from coming back to the the event um but you got to give props to that security guy with that Point tackle man that was was fantastic okay better tackle that one or the one on Adam hadwin in Canada last year oh head head’s tackle was better by far because because it was hadwin come on it was unknown security guard I mean a golf pro you don’t like go golf pro it’s gonna be a great tackler security guy you kind of expected it it’s part of their training yeah but you know um good you know I think that here’s my take on this and it’s happened in sports all over the world it it’s a dangerous thing that you run into there somebody ran across a baseball field the other night um and that in itself was scary to watch um and then took out literally like they went after him and he like flipped over the line uh oh look who’s joined us now oh welcome hello boys hi Dave Dave thanks for showing up tonight um hey yeah better late than good to be here good to be seen um you know I think that when you get this this safety issue of player safety you run down this risk of I noticed nobody ever does it in a football field and the first person that does that that’s going to meet I don’t know any of those guys in paths running across the middle like I’ll laugh at because that’s gonna be hilarious to watch Ray Lewis taking out somebody Ray L taking on somebody that’s right on a football field but that’s a different story I was going to say something thank you Dave um the other the other part of that too is Steve is you know baseball and football do a really good job of panning the camera to other players on the bench or someone else away from the away from the person on the field doing the Antics so the only people that are really seeing it are the people watching T are not the people watching TV but the people there at the at the event pull your phone and open Tik Tok or Instagram because then you’re going see the next thing you see I it hits the algorithm real quick but on the national networks though you don’t see even hockey with fights I mean you don’t really see fights that much because they they they cut they cut it out and look at the the coaches or you know they they show what caused the fight or something along those lines not the actual fight itself and it’s just that’s the NHL trying to get better um with their image but you have the same you have the same issue with you know with player the problem is with the golf is they don’t have a bench or something else they can focus on for the cart girl or anything else like that they’ve got to focus on the the event that are going on especially on the green so they don’t really have that second shot option yeah no and and again all cameras were on 18 it wasn’t like they could go to a different hole last I was watching that live and will even will was watching it with me and he goes there’s somebody running down the hill so it was um you know I know I’m late to the show here but you know I think all all in all it was handled really well the other problem you have is you run into this the bigger issue is how did they get in right like there’s the question of how did they how did they get into the golf tournament because we’ve all been to a golf tournament you have to go through security M and now they they do metal detectors and everything else now I’ll say this Dave you and I have been to bill right Brad I know drank um can’t type it I can’t tell you how many of my friends are like oh I’m just gonna park at my buddy’s house and hop over the fence yeah so there are ways to get into every the only golf tournament that you can’t just hop over the fence and get into is austa speak of the devil um but here’s the thing you know it’s it was it was a powdery substance that could have been brought in in a plastic bag you know it’s got into funny enough those are smoke grenades and do you know what those things use for the accelerate in them by the way yes I do diesel fuel so the stop oil guys were using smoke grenades with diesel fuel in them so I’ve played enough I’ve played enough paintball and used enough smoke grenades so yeah so um but yeah I I think that you there’s they’re running this risk um I think that there’s going to be a problem at some point I I again I don’t want to see a player get hurt and that’s my biggest fear of all of this is seeing a player get hurt so um I think that they need to really take a long hard look and I do think security did a great job the taked down and the tackle were great yeah they were um they were great um so I think that uh you know kudos to the Connecticut State Police and the local police there in Cromwell uh kudos to them for doing a great job because they did a great job protecting the players and I mean he tackled him and it was close to Tom Kim’s line I was more impressed that Tom Kim made that putt after the tackle right where it was like that was pretty impressive so all right well let’s uh let’s jump in uh let’s jump into happy hour here so want to be here right want be here [Music] right okay all right so we’re going to jump right into happy hour and um we’ve got a really fun group of people as we get older um the oldest in this group uh but uh as we’ve gotten older you got to find new ways to play good golf and these guys have figured it out as you get older so um Point ofart procedure yes did I ever play good golf no no okay no but you know what you do well though put no I’m not even that right go get beer go get beer go get beer you’re the best have a role you have a role Know Your Role so uh let’s get Wes and Tom into the show first off hey Wes hey Tom how are you hey fellas how we doing can you guys how are you good good everybody doing good tonight yeah we’re having a great day got to play today so that was good where’d you play today were fun no I went up to uh the balls at Ferry Point uh here in here in New York it absolutely terrific by the way the first time I’d been out there took a couple took a couple of Pals with me and uh we had wonderful day very lynxy course right on the uh right on the Long Island Sound you know you know we live I live in Manhattan and it was 35 minutes door too not bad not bad have you played um just north of there in Connecticut have you played Great River I have that’s a I played that years ago right after it opened I was up uh for a wedding up there and that was actually the wedding was at Great River and the the we had the morning of the wedding we played the golf course and that place was unbelievable yeah it is it’s a good a little tricked up don’t you think a little bit um I thought when it opened especially it was a little tricked up but we played it in the rain and it it was the rough was 4 Ines thick in the rain and you didn’t want any part of hitting it off the Fairway on that golf no that’s all you want if it’s raining and it’s that rough up that rough up there on that River it’s now so let’s Jump Right In you guys are with GRE do golf and um Tom you and I met um we were literally I think we just wrapped up our show or just getting ready to start our show at the PJ Merchandise Show um and you stopped by and we had this conversation I got this great hat from you thank you for that um but um let’s start so what is gray dog golf so I guess you know this the simple answer is what we like to call ourselves and that’s the the largest uh repository of data and research on the senior golfing experience um now more interesting answer is how we got there like uh 15 years or so ago Wes and I were commiserating about uh the deteriorating state of our games and uh just you know miserable wondering what was what was the story and uh uh you know we’re not hitting it as far as we used to uh we’re experiencing more penalty Strokes uh we’re three putting more greens can’t Advance the ball from the second cut uh just generally higher scores uh and then next day you know increased muscle soreness and Joint soreness and all that goes with it uh so clearly it was age and we started to talk to some of our other friends and playing partners and and they were experiencing the same thing so we started to search and identify and test uh maybe some ways to overcome this these negative effects of age on our game and you know as you might imagine we found a very receptive audience and realized we were on to something so are you guys professional golfers by trade we aren’t absolutely not but it should be pointed out Brad that we do rely heavily on a team that work with us of uh mostly Class A professionals good teachers uh one of one of which in our team is is the great Chris Stout he’s absolutely amazing but we stress in our content and we talk when we talk to people we stress that we aren’t professionals and What Makes Us interesting and perhaps even you know may lend some may lend some credibility to it is we don’t try to be professionals we tell you what we’ve learned from them we’re not swing coaches you know we we’re frustrated aging golfers we played well when we were younger right like most of this audience I think we want to find a way to where we could easily employ techniques and strategies particularly and ways of looking at the golf course and unique ways you know we have a thing that we call play smarter better for longer it’s a copyrighted phrase and what do we mean by that it’s not hard just know what you know what you can do know what you can’t do it’s a a rigorous honesty about the game where we are uh we encourage folks to before you go out and like me before you go out and Stevie before you go out and try to buy a game with the with the with with new with new shafts new club heads the newest thing on the market and man I’m as guilty Brad as anybody at this right more I’m I’m look no oh we lost West where’ he go that extra I’m looking for that extra 20 yards right so what we say is is you know maybe maybe that $600 or $700 might be better employed with some lessons and some understanding and we try to bring that to it you know first and foremost we’re researchers right M when and you know Tommy touched on that when we when we make a piece of advice and we for example we we we wrote an article about uh should you wear a glove right what if I told you that the answer is yes by the way uh and not for the reasons that you think and you can look on our website and find find this but we’re we’re talking A4 shots from six different players with a glove and without a glove three clubs each including including some some women golfer and some really quite old guys as well and we we came up with one conclusion look wear your glove it’s not Distance by the way that’s not the it’s dispersion dispersion yeah without without the you see it Brad without the right without the without the glove for a rightand player the right hand side of the green and the right hand side of the the right rough comes comes into play why we don’t know why it just does wear the glove so you know let’s let’s talk a little bit here about gray dog you know as none of us are getting any any younger I got you know I got a hair you know haircut today and the gray in my beard is showing out a little bit more than normal um that yes and yes there’s advances in technology um from way back when from when Steve and I probably started golfing in the 80s and maybe hit a Pimon Club or two I I had a coup I had a couple P clubs yes I learned how to play with them but we all know father time is undefeated um what have what have you guys found is the best advice to give someone as they’re getting older in the game of golf yeah so um I mean the first thing is you’re right about father time and and uh perfect record yeah we need to embrace that um so so we don’t fight it okay but that doesn’t mean that you surrender and give up give up the game although we all threaten to do that after a bad bad round all the time um what we do have to do is approach the game differently instead of trying to overpower a golf course with brute force with which we may at one time been able to do uh we now have to take a a more strategic approach to the game so for example our research shows that 70% of the golf shots we take on course are within 70 yards of the hole so let’s spend more time learning and practicing pitching and chipping and putting rather than pounding drivers at the at the range for hours so take a take a pitching and uh and chipping lesson or take a putting lesson um we we always say practice with a purpose and that means at our age we don’t have the stamina to hit balls for hours on end at the at the at the range uh so shorten your practice time and focus that time on a specific type of shot or specific distance um here’s another piece of advice we give stop trying to emulate the the uh the mikkelson Flop shot or the spin and stop chip with a 60 degree wedge unless or until you have perfected that shot chances are if you’re like us which most of your audience is you don’t you don’t have the the you don’t have the uh swing speed to to make the those shots so uh most of our generation learn to to Chip and Pitch with a pitching wedge or a less lofted uh iron um using a more manageable putting stroke getting the ball on the ground quicker and letting it roll up um it might not be sexy but we bet your results will be better using a technique that you know than something that you’re trying that is maybe beyond your your reach um the other thing we do is we we do tell people you know Embrace technology but just don’t become solely dependent on it we tell we tell guys and girls to get professionally fit as Wes was saying um and when you can involve the the uh the teaching pro or your your swing coach in that process fitting clubs to a particular swing is a very very complex equation and uh we they don’t try to do it alone and most of all don’t go online at night and Order clubs without knowing your specs um no no no no not not me I’ve never had to explain a box showing up at the house how about that it’s just like when they when the wife explains the Amazon order right um yeah exactly you know there’s there’s there’s something else about that too right the one thing that we see so frequently with senior players and aging players the perfect Club is not in your partner’s bag no right right you guys get it right it’s like we we have just a quick anecdote right we have a fell that’s we have a fell that’s on our Advisory Board 79 years old he is addicted to the game he is a world class CL leading opthalmologist one of the best in the world there’s a there’s a floor named after him in New York City all right he calls me up one morning and he says man I found a great club and I said really what was that doc he got you know I got a heavenwood and I’m already going I said where where where why why’d you do this he says oh I was playing with my partner he has one he has one and I hit it great so I ordered it now he plays at the same place Tommy does I asked Tommy to go look in his bag about four months ago and and tell me is it there it’s not there here’s the other thing our good friend the dock is 5 foot6 if I gave him my wife stilettos okay his playing partner is 6 foot twoo a heavenwood Stevie you know this a heavenwood is set up at a between a three and a fourwood shaft link with with a seven wood a seven wood head right I mean if you do catch it on the odd chance as a five foot you get me guys it’s like it’s not in your partners back and because you hit it well on there and we tell guys this all the time and they fall in love with it another advisory member was smoking a cigar with me last week and I said uh he says oh man I really I I really had good luck with uh I really had good luck with uh with with with these wedges and I go yeah he goes yeah I ordered them and I go great what what shafts he goes what you know the closest the closest to us hurt the most yeah yeah y so guys you’re right I’m an NPC golfer and um we have a lot of senior players that play gray dogs that play in our community um you know when you go to a tournament uh especially for the Adaptive tournaments you’re probably looking at you know a good more than half of the players being of senior age and that’s you know 50 and over 55 and over depending on the tournament can can your lessons be implemented with an Adaptive golfer as well yeah I think I let me start with this time and then you can finish up I think so I think so Brad and and the reason is is that we’re not asking you we’re not asking you to do anything that you physically can’t do we’re just asking you to look at the golf course differently you know and and that that’s the that I guess the key takeaway the key learning that we have when people come back to us and is is they say wow that really that really helped me and then I press and I say well what was it that helped you he says well knowing that I just can’t get to that right get to that right side of number 15 anymore so I shouldn’t try right and I go go ahead and finish the thought right and it’s always about having having a a place to hit it Tommy is really good at certain things and he breaks this down so succinctly you know we hear a lot of times on the J to are watching on television on Saturday and Sunday this phrase that’s a per you know what he’s trying to do he’s looking at that bunker as his as his Miss okay or he’s looking to Pinehurst last week I have a lot of history at number two none of it very good but there’s you know there there’s there’s certain areas there you have to you have to find your way to the ball right and the ball’s going to roll off so no that is right we don’t call those misses we actually call those targets right that’s where I’m trying to head I’m deliberately trying to hit it into that alley 20 yards short of the green right that’s the way that’s the way we we approach this we also ask people Brett and particularly with your you know I’ve been thinking about this all day particularly with your UT audience you know honesty has been honest honest honesty has been forced upon you and and embracing that in the golf game is something that we we find very very difficult to do right know exactly what you can do if you know what you’re able to do you will play better right I haven’t said anything about not knowing what you can do or what you can’t do but knowing what you’re able to do will enable you to play better and as as as as you guys practice and as they as they work with things they’ll find shots that that that that work for them every single time and we’d love to develop some we’d love to work with you Brad and and and see if see if we can put our research you know to the test here and see you know find some ways to make this audience uh enjoy the participation more yeah absolutely y all right guys on your website you’ve got some pretty cool trademark phrases and I want to get into a couple of these um and the first one that I like we talked about this yesterday is ego memory so can you talk about ego memory and what that is go ahead Tommy no you take it all right ego memory is ego memory is this you remember when we were young athletes right and you hear these we develop something called muscle memory right and that’s like you know it’s it’s it’s like in football or in baseball or basketball you you know you learn the the things that happen ego memory is the most is is the most damaging of things to a golfer and steveen Steve you and I were we were all talking about this yesterday ego memory is this that perfect seven iron from 156 yards slightly uphill into a breeze with a Mist coming down in a match and you caught it perfectly it landed a foot past the hole stopped and rolled back to within an inch that’s ego memory because you go out now every time from 150 yards and think you’re hitting that seven iron uphill 150 yards now sounds like how Dave plays that sounds like how Dave plays by the [Laughter] way I’ve never purposely spun a ball backwards you know Byron Nelson actually talked about that de he couldn’t understand why guys were with the modern Tour player were trying to put back spin on the ball he goes does that make it more difficult shouldn’t you just hit it to a distance and hope it stays there my best friend is a tree 15 yards into the woods that kicks the ball back out onto the Fairway there you go so that’s what that’s what ego that’s what ego memory is right you got to get rid of that you you have to get rid of it it’s it’s it’s it’s not reality and and when we talk about it guys laugh and they chuckle and every single one of them actually if they’re honest will raise their hand and say guilty you that’s me yeah we do that yep um the next one I want to ask and and I kind of teased our show coming into it is teaching Old Dogs new tricks yeah I’ll take that one Tom tell me about that one yeah so you know originally when we were first setting up this company just a little over a year ago now um and Wes wanted to call it Old Goat Golf and I thought I don’t know about that you know we are old goats but we had to try to put a little bit more positive spin on it so at at my pushing and also at Wes’s wife’s pushing we said you know dogs are more lovable than goats um we are old dogs uh and then we could play on the the phrase teaching old dogs New Tricks so we we came up with gray dog Golf and that logo you see behind me uh bears that out so the idea is you know rather than play the same way that we’ve been playing throughout our youth um let’s try to think of a of a more strategic uh trickier way uh to better scores because uh the oldway isn’t working anymore so um and all of our research really um is is based in um allowing us to show people how to play better play smarter and play for longer so uh Old Dogs new tricks um so I love that um one of the things with being an a leader in adaptive Community is keeping the senior players going and a lot of golfers get to that age where they I just can’t hit it as good as I once was or they took they tend to give up they don’t want to play anymore um how how I I hate when that happens because I feel like as a leader in the Adaptive Community I failed our senior players how do you teach them to love the game again yep so so yeah I mean look none of us are as good as we as we were if we keep trying to play the same way as I just said physically not capable anymore um so you know we we can help ourselves by by staying in better shape we uh by stretching before and after um but we still have to recognize that we can’t overpower the the golf course anymore our Focus needs to be on on scoring and that’s really you know the measure the one measure that we all go by is scoring and and and a guy who’s who’s scoring better is a happier golfer and wants to play more so we we ask we ask people if we can help you to have a putt for par on every hole what would your resulting score be for 18 holes and now we don’t say anything about Greens in regulation we don’t say anything about you know uh super long drives um the greens and regulation that’s a TV stat that’s for tour players that’s that’s not for us um but by playing from the Fairway by staying out of that greenside bunker by avoiding penalty Strokes um by understanding and this is an interesting point we haven’t really touched on understanding how the architect designed designed the Golf Hall and by knowing your game knowing your carry distance you’ll gain a much better chance of having that par putt on every hole and you’ll watch your your your handicap go way down very very quickly um Wes you want to take that point on the the architect for a minute yeah so one of the things that one of the things I’ve studied quite a bit is is is architecture and the golf course and also have been lucky enough to own a couple of golf courses and have some built as well one of the things I can tell you where the the owner saves money is behind the green okay right if you if you look at a golf course most golf courses have the greens are TR trapped we agree right there’s always going to be a front right trap that’s for you right you know just as Tommy mentioned 70% of shots are from 70 yards in 67% of golf shots that are missed are missed short and 70% of those are missed right okay so if you just do that that’s that front right bunker it’s there for you here’s a quick one that that that we do you know when your watch you see the three numbers front middle back MH Tommy likes to say that’s one number to many right stop worrying about that stop worrying about that front number divide the green divide the Green in half right at right in the middle and focus on the back half of that green more putts are made from pin High than our equal distance from below or below or above the hole hear what I said again more putts made from pin High by a long shot than are made from the same distance below or above the hole why wouldn’t you want to be try to be pin high all the time right that’s that’s that’s a tour players stop stop worried about what they do right you know that’s the first thing we that’s the first thing that we tell people the architecture of a golf course is fascinating to me there’s very very and people will people will write in right now and tell me that at their course number six you know it’s out of bounds past okay it’s out of bounds is after the green don’t go there okay what what we tell you know what we tell people is this for the most part the runoff at the back of the green is where the walkoff at the back of the green is and it’s trampled down it’s like like like that the mowers get there and it’s fine I’d much rather be there chipping back into the green than I would from that front right hand bunker where I’ve got a 25 or 30 yard bunker shot it’s much easier to play it that way final point on architecture interestingly enough is that we tell guys where to Tee It Up on what side of the tea Steve you’re a competitive player we’re we’re a good one by the way uh we know that if we’re trying to hit a fade into a a dog a dog leg right it’s you know it’s best to go to the far right side of the T box a lot of people don’t understand this stuff so we bring these we bring these things into we bring these things into Focus if you’re on a par you’re on a par three and you’ve got you know and we as we always tell you Club up one you know you know Club up one if you Club up one as a senior player what we find is a smoother swing and less turn on the ball right so guys that are used to getting a cut into the green or that’s a gentle word for slice by the way but if you right we you know we have research to say that if if if you’re hitting a if you’re hitting a seven iron and hard and it’s cutting to the right you know I can promise you if you do a 3/4 70 80% six iron it’s going to be a lot straighter they’re astonished when they try these things yeah nice all right guys um we going to wrap it up um you guys have a ton of content on your website um I do through it last night um ton of great information for people to find out for themselves just how to play better golf um and and I’m gonna say this I don’t think you have to be and I’m closer to being a gray dog than these other two Knuckleheads are that that are on here with me tonight um they um I don’t think I think everybody old and cranky well yeah you are that um I think everybody can benefit from so where can people find you if they want to find out some more uh more information about gray dog golf um so you mentioned our website it’s www.gog.com G re y Grog golf.com uh we also have very active accounts on Instagram Twitter Facebook LinkedIn and YouTube you can find us there um you can always write to me at Tom Grog golf.com or west at West greydog golf.com um one thing that we we have started to do and we’d like to do more of it is um take our our content to live audiences we’ve done a couple at um at golf clubs in Florida and New Jersey and in New York so far uh including indoor facilities they’re really fun they’re really productive for us um the interaction with a live audience almost always yields new topics for research that we then go back and look into so we’re we’re always happy to get that uh firsthand uh feedback so well listen I don’t want to come to New Jersey because that’s way too close to Yankee Stadium for a Red Sox fan but um I will next time you’re in Florida let me know go this is Greg Tom Greg would love you guys tonight he really would Greg’s Greg’s a Die Hard Yankee fan so and a giant and a Giants fan yeah Andy FM New Jersey so um but if next time you guys are down in Florida let me know would definitely love to come out and see your show hang out so and maybe we can even hit the little white ball around and chase it around for a little bit so that’d be fun yeah I have I have one final thought right gray dogs aren’t just guys right we have we have a Avid following of great do we call them great dog ladies right the great dog girls right they love us and here’s the one thing that’s absolutely fascinating when we do our shows our seminars right you know where I’m going fellas who’s the one taking the notes asking questions writing things down it is it isn’t it isn’t the fellas it’s it’s it’s the lady they are they are absolutely in tune with it we have we have one woman that just won her second Club Championship uh here in New Jersey at a great Club in Spring Lake that uh that employs this stuff all the time and sends us Conta and absolutely absolutely gets into it so there you go okay well guys thank you for joining us tonight we appreciate it and we will uh definitely check you guys out and thanks fellas da Dave you can benefit from a lot of their stuff so you might want to check out their website benefit from a lot of things one quick thing before we go you guys were talking about the you know protesters and uh people running on on the field of play and you were talking about football so just to show you that I am a gray dog I think it was in the early 70s during a Baltimore Colts game somebody ran on a field and Mike Curtis clotheslined this guy right in the middle of the field and it was it was a beautiful hit it was really something to behold so and that needs to happen today so we guys thank you again for your time we really appreciate the opportunity great great work fellas love you the great work thank you thank you awesome that was a lot of fun so we can all we are old and gray we’re at least getting there um Hayden um Hayden there’s there’s another story behind that that that match may not happen this upcoming year but that’s a different story yeah there’s a there’s another story yeah Hayden you Hayden Hayden we might have to get you to fill in again so we’ll we’ll work on that so all right um let’s jump into it’s smack time smack of the week it’s smack of the week um where is somewhere oh there it is man that brid though mindset such a good golf ball um I um there it is there’s the mindset this week smack of the week is a true smack um this is someone that could benefit from the mindset golf ball focusing on where to hit it and would probably make better contact we’ll just leave it at that and some gray dog clinics yes here’s the thing why do you snap your shaft right why did he snap the club there was no need to snap the club there there was no need to snap the club there guys you’re missing a bigger there he made Solid contact with that t-x he did make solid contact with the t- Mark it’s a you know a bunion esque size ball if he missed that one too then we had more problems you you are correct all right let’s go to last call [Music] all right so last week Scotty wins again um yay I I don’t think any of us were really surprised there were you I mean I I tell you what um you know fenal and ashk really you know outside of Tom Kim I think we’re the two closest I know Tony Tony fell off there with going into the water on 16 um yeah was shot by the way that I that wasn’t even he was close know looked like I hit it into the water there correct you think he miss do you think he miss hit that one or was it I think he pulled a Tim cup and looked up at the golf gods and the breeze and they said nope you’re not winning today well I mean if he had watched it all kley in front of him hit the shot over the back of the green I can kind of understand that shot but yeah his kley shot was just as bad because he smoked it over the back of the green but yeah I don’t that shot that Tony hit on 16 was terrible but I I think you know oshk really got out of it when he shanked the driver into the woods and it monkeyed out for 180 yard blind shot on a drivable par 4 um I’m gonna be honest with you that t-shot is really weird on that Golf Course for especially for a left-handed golfer correct it’s a hole that goes left it’s an uphill shot that lands on a down slope it’s a weird t- shot it really truly and the whole 410 yards you know but I you know Tom Kim Tom Kim really gave it a really good run there it was Scotty’s to lose and he almost did um yeah he did but and then Tom Kim went and put that shot in the bunker on the play on the playoff hole I honestly think well first off there was the wrong Club from the Fairway when they said 111 he had L out I was like Tom Kim doesn’t hit it that far wrong Club no second problem even as cadd even as caddy said you need plus seven and and the other problem and his cadd is a really good freaking caddy like that’s we simpsons’s old caddy uh Paul toori uh but I think the bigger problem that I had with Tom Kim was he had no feel with this putter coming in especially on lag putts like the put he hit on on 17 that he rolled past the whole six feet like he hammered that thing and I was like what are you doing like what is this like you’re like Scotty lagged it down there close because he was like yeah let me just go tap this in get my part and get out of here um yeah but that’s where I was really disappointed in what what Tom Kim did because I was like he had all the ability to put pressure on and he had no feel with his Putter and I was like how are you in a playoff when you had no feel with your Putter and then just can he almost jar he almost jars the shot on 18 coming into the green and then and then makes probably the hardest part he had all day after 10 minutes of you know people get taken out in handcuffs by the way we didn’t get into this there there’s a report that some spectator knocked one of those people out like went Chris Tucker on him and was like you got knocked that you know what out on the way out while the dude is being held by police so that that person sh I haven’t seen that video but I want to see it so smack of the week next week so right because that would have been smack of the week because I would have cheered that one on um yeah but yeah no um you know I think that we you know great event in Harford there are questions should that be a signature event we debated it last year I don’t want to rehash that again this year n i I don’t mind an easy event coming off the US Open it’s a fun event and it’s an event that the players like playing so let’s leave it where it is uh on to Dave’s favorite event from last year yes rocket morgage rocket mortgage and picking Ricky to win um think I had Ricky to win last year you did have Ricky to win last year um I do think uh another good event I don’t think Rick’s quite playing up to form again to defend his title my two cents but um let’s get into odds we’ll get into picks and we’ll uh hey uh before we get odds and stuff do I get pick Greg’s pick no you get your own we have his P you do get we’ll let you we I I mean I do like that idea but he unlike Dave a couple weeks ago he actually sent his pick in so yeah all right [Music] [Music] rockgage Tom Kim at 12 to one shocker shocker um ceron young where’s Mr where’s Mr 13th player to shoot 59 congratulations cam uh 16 16 to one again I need to see I need I need to see him he’s another guy on two the shot 59 that didn’t win yeah oshk and at 20 um Taylor pendri and Stephan yogger at 25 Maverick Co Stephen whatever Stephen Jagger yeah Stephen Jagger Stefan yogger I just went full I just went full you you went you thought it was ymir’s brother for some reason I don’t know um Maverick mcne at 28 uh Alex noran at 30 uh Aaron Ry at 30 Keith Mitchell at 30 last year’s defending the defending Champion Ricky Fowler uh coming in at uh 50 to one right now 50 to one okay 50 to one so there there you have it um I I I have the honors here uh with with u me G talked into taking Scotty last week so thank you Stephen Greg because I was Inon to take Tony feno um I’m taking Tom Kim this week okay Greg hases who has the second pick me or Greg uh I think Greg where did Xander and ludvig finish last week they finished I think Xander finished above L I think I think it’s Greg’s pick here give me one second I had Xander he had lud didn’t yeah um I think Xander finished above ludvic I’m not taking his player anyway Xander finished tied for 13th so which was higher than I can find lwig right now he was somewhere in there well it’s not going to matter he’s taking um who was second on his list oh he wait he had a top he got 10 points points where did he go I put the points in I don’t know he’s taking Ricky the Greg’s taking Ricky this week yeah he is um and I’m gonna go ahead and I’m gonna take a name you’ve already mentioned I think it was 20 to1 I’m gonna take Maverick mcney that’s I’ve had Maverick earlier this year um I think that’s a good pick um coming into this tournament it’ be a good good one for him to win for his first one um out there so Brad who do you like this do you got well I mean you Greg stole my thunder again because I really wanted to pick Ricky fer um but uh you know we’ll go cam young all right okay I like it like it yeah all right all right guys well great show Brad thank you for filling in absolutely nice of you to join us better late than never um hey and responsibilities some of us have them some of us don’t yeah okay cool I hope everybody has a good week um we will uh we’ll see you next uh next Tuesday where’s next Tuesday where is in July I’m looking for the uh where uh we don’t have the exit video well thanks American fit and Bridgestone Golf this is a golf dad’s Tavern production and there we go and there we go all right everybody have a good week we’ll see you next week cheers y’all cheers
