all right so now that we got the housekeeping out our way we bring Kevin Roy on board Kevin what’s going on where are you joining us from yeah not too much uh yeah first of all thanks for having me on um I’m uh about 10 minutes away from you I’m in lak Ranch Florida my wife and I just built a house and um yeah I’m in my uh I guess my little man cave here it’s uh you know not a bad little spot a little TV kind of hanging out good place to kind of just unwind uh you know especially after a long day on the golf course and you know perhaps maybe have a cocktail or two so um yeah just uh hanging out looking cool so if I want to come over and hang out in your man cave do you give me the secret code or can I sort of bribe or buy my way in bringing party and then maybe I can stick some of those on the shelves next to what you have already I got plenty of space I would love to put some party up here um it’s a it’s a open welcome to come on in um you know we love having people over so yeah party is uh I got I got plenty of space for those okay okay that’s a deal I got some part coming your way hey Ju Just to start just to get things rolling let’s let’s have some fun you and your wife Annie are walking down the street who’s more likely to be recognized you or her I’m gonna have to give that to her um she is uh she’s pretty well known in the Tampa area um as well as Sarasota she uh you know one of her first gigs was uh up in Tampa on the uh I want to say the uh C NBC affiliate uh up in Tampa so she is uh I’m going to give that one to her no doubt um there’s been times where we’ve been kind of walking around hide park or uh you know having dinner or something and and and someone always comes up and and says oh you Annie Sao and um I’ve only had uh I’ve had one encounter I think I can remember I was uh actually waiting for Annie to pick me up at the Tamp International Airport and uh some uh younger kid came up and asked me if are are you Kevin Roy uh uh on the PJ tour and and I was like yeah that’s me but um that was the first and you know only time that’s ever happened to me but um she uh she definitely gets recognized a little bit more uh especially when if we if we’re up in the Tamp area yeah well I it seems like she and I have had a similar trajectory in life golf is an important part of our life she marrying you but with broadcasting and professional sports and also being the daughter of Chris Sabo now I I remember Chris as the third baseman on the Cincinnati Reds going way back when he was wearing the wck specs and had the muscles uh man was he an intimidating guy good player too three-time Allstar won a World Series with the Reds I I first of all how did you meet Annie and what was it like going to their house because I would think having Chris looking back at you might be a little bit intimidating yeah I mean it’s um it first of all he’s an unbelievable guy and he’s a really good golfer as well which is which is awesome but um Annie and I we had a uh it’s a it’s actually a pretty funny story I’ll try to make it somewhat short but um I met Annie through a mutual friend um just kind of out in the Tampa area um we were uh kind of out I guess day drinking a little bit and having some fun and um we were at like a I guess like a U-shaped bar and I was with one of my buddies and he she was on the other side with uh a couple of her friends and my buddy who introduced us and um I was I I I had the courage to go over there and introduce myself to all of them and Annie actually at the time was um talking to somebody else so I was like all right cool I got her number that night and uh I went home that night I told my my two buddies I was with I was like I’m going to marry that girl one day and um well fast forward eight months later I’m in uh Arizona for final final stage of uh qualifying school I want to say this is probably 2018 um that same buddy texted me he goes hey uh you have no idea who wants to hang out when you get home um it uh tournament end on a Saturday I flew home and uh landed and I went to hide Park in um Tampa and it was Annie and she wanted to hang out again and so so long story short um I show up and it was kind of somewhat a little awkward at the first you know first you know seeing her again and this and that and um I was just casually sitting there and she kind of uh came up and um asked me if I if I am still interested in her and I and I was a little nervous and kind of shy at the time and I was like yeah I mean I think you’re a very you know pretty girl and um she grabbed both my knees and kiss me and ever ever since then we’ve uh we’ve been together we dated for a couple years and um I proposed to her when she was uh working for the uh Minnesota Twins up in Minnesota and uh we just passed two years of marriage in December and we have a a little seven-month-old daughter now Mia and uh just built our first house together so kind of a crazy story it’s um you know not many people believe me that I I told my buddies that I was going to marry this girl and then we fast forward and mean we didn’t speak for eight months and then um all of a sudden it she came around again and and here we are that’s that’s a great story love love the details too I love her taking initiative and you following up and I I got to tell you brother you out kicked your coverage I there’s no doubt about that um she’s she’s beautiful she’s amazing she’s an awesome mom awesome wife and uh you know one of my biggest supporters of what I do and you know I try to support her as much as I can what she does it’s um we uh we have a great relationship and couldn’t ask for anything better that’s awesome so life is good but um you’re home um you started off the season on the corn fairy tour got off to a really good start and four out of four Cuts how do you feel about your game right now yeah game feels really good um you know it was kind of uh it was uh for me it was a little interesting going into the first event you know with kind of the holidays and then you know moving into our house and um you know trying to get all settled so I I I didn’t really have a lot of uh normal preparation I would call it going into Exuma uh the first event down the Bahamas but um you know I guess you know sometimes that’s better for uh Me Maybe you know the golfers out there would would understand a little bit you know sometimes practicing is not great but um you know I got a couple rounds in you know with my dad and um you know had some practice but I I I was playing good I I felt good with my golf swing I was I was I was doing a lot of uh good work with uh the guy I work with up in uh Tampa at old memorial Dustin and um yeah so it’s you know it’s you know kind of a quote unquote dream start to the uh corn fairy tour season um you know it’s kind of put me in a position to you know at least take the next two weeks off and and um and kind of spend some time with the you know with the family before we uh you know once we get back to the States it’s kind of a you know Full Throttle with you know a bunch of weeks in a row but um I got no complaints about the about the start of the season so far yeah fantastic Kevin Roy is our guest he is on the corn fairy tour played the PGA Tour last year he is the son of Jim Roy Jim is one of my neighbors at Lakewood National Golf Club we’ll get into your relationship with the different Neighbors at Lakewood National um Golf Club so tell me about unplugging when you get home like do you put the the clubs on the shelf for a couple of days W walk me through how you unplug yeah so I me I actually played in a little proam down in uh Fort Myers today and it was it was the first time I swung a club and since I got home uh from Columbia which is probably about a week ago so didn’t touch a club for a week um I was just you know trying to spend as much time with Annie and M as much as I can um just because I know you know kind of once once the season starts I you know I’ll kind of be gone for a lot so um yeah I mean when I unplug I I like to get away I like to you know like I said spend as much time with them we you know we took her to the zoo we you know we we kind of just find some things to do whether um you know the weather been the weather hasn’t been great we want we’re we’re trying to plan a little beach day with her for uh her first trip to the beach but um yeah when I get away it’s it’s um it’s it’s it’s about as away as it gets it’s not much golf at all if you know if my dad or my brother or someone wants to maybe play around the golf I will but um like I said I I haven’t touched the club since Columbia I haven’t seen the range um just been kind of uh hanging out with them and spending as much time as I can with them I would too um sounds like you’re trying to have more fun not just so you’re wearing it uh which is a groovy hat I’ll tell you that but there’s a story behind it that is you know sometimes we forget about um having fun and and realizing this is a game we play because you played for a living when did you start wearing that hat and why uh this was probably back uh it was middle or yeah I guess middle to beginning of um two years ago on the corn fairy tour um I started off uh we started off in the Bas again the first event I actually uh flew to the bahas and then tested positive couldn’t play for Co couldn’t play in the tournament had to sit in a hotel room for seven straight days couldn’t fly home or anything it was uh the longest seven days of potentially My Life um and then finally was uh you know tested negative and was able to fly the next week and I finished fourth um and then I proceeded to go on and Miss seven I think of my next eight cuts and um to be honest with you I just hit a a wild low Point um in Gulf um didn’t know if I really wanted to play anymore I had all these doubts you know is this is this what you want to do um you know maybe you know you’re getting older maybe you maybe find a job you’re getting married you know this and that and um I think it was I think it was a call from call from above to be honest with you I was sitting in a hotel room in uh I think maybe witchat Kansas or something scrolling through Instagram um just kind in the dumps and um one of the ads came up and it was literally this app right here have more fun um and it was a call I think I um what was the reaction what was the reaction when people saw it were they like Kev what’s up you all right yeah no I mean I was you know obviously I I think you know I think that you know my team if you will my my closest people to me my you know my fiance Annie at the time was my fiance my parents my brother my sister I think they all kind of knew like you I was down the dumps you know there’s there’s no other way to put it I was I was at a low Point um in this game of golf and I you know I I I wanted to quit didn’t know if I really wanted to play anymore and I saw this hat and it was the easiest quickest $80 I’ve ever spent overnighted it to the hotel room and I wore it for the uh the rest of the season and then continued to wear it for the first uh however many events on the corn fairy tour till I um you know started working with reliaquest but um it’s still I still try to um you know if you will have more fun on the golf course and it’s not even just on the golf course it’s I try to I try to take it off the golf course as well I mean you know at the end of the day it’s golf it’s it’s a sport um I’m starting to realize it now that i’ I’ve been working with a mental coach that you know I got a lot of great things in my life have you know amazing wife amazing daughter amazing family um if golf doesn’t work out you know it’s not the end of the world so um it’s perspective that’s what itec yeah so I I um it worked it worked that year you know I ended up getting my tour card it was um just kind of changed my whole outlook to be honest with you just done just you know life in general not just the golf it was just I just tried to enjoy it more um on and off the course yeah that’s great that’s great perspective we we all need that at different times and uh plus it it looks pretty good I mean I I could see like if I was doing like a little day drinking as you said or a dy I might put that on and it just like elevates the the psychology it it’s a good hat you know it’s kind of funny after um after it kind of blew up on social media from me wearing it when I got my tour card they uh the company’s called melon you know shout out to melon I actually still wear their hats it’s a melon hat that says reliaquest on the front but um it’s um they sent me a couple different colorways so I have I have a good stock here at home so when I’m not in a tournament not you know not wearing Li Quest I uh you know I’m rocking to have more fun quite a bit to be honest good for you hey take me back to the beginning where does your golf story begin who put a club in your hand how’d you get started where was it yeah I mean it was certainly my dad um up in Syracuse New York um it’s where I grew up at a country club called bellw Country Club Donald Ross design great course um you know unfortunately I don’t I don’t get up there too much uh anymore but um yeah it was it was 100% my dad um you know he didn’t you know he was obviously a very accomplished golfer in his own right and um he never pushed uh any any one of his kids my older brother or me or my sister in the golf he just kind of if we if we liked it he was there for us um I played a bunch of different sports growing up um but yeah I mean I was I was kind of one of those kids that would just kind of go to the golf course I was uh you know always you know in The Creeks kind of playing with frogs kind of doing crazy stuff and um you know I think one day he went home and told my mom that like hey man you know this kid’s got this kid’s got some Talent you know he he always seems to hit it on the insert and uh you know he’s you know to this day he’s my biggest supporter um but yeah I mean I got to give all the credit to my dad when it comes to uh you know getting me into the game when did you know you were a good player um you know that’s a good question I um I don’t think I really took it like super serious till maybe I would say maybe around 16 to 18 um you know I I like I said I played a bunch of different sports growing up you know basketball baseball baseball and golfer in the same season um and I I chose golf over baseball I would say uh I kind of realized it I had I was decent at the game uh I would say maybe around 16 or 17 um 18ish uh you know when I you know started winning a lot of uh like high school matches and then um you know I kind of realized probably my the summer what year was it it was one of the Summers it was um I won all three of the uh quote unquote Syracuse major Amer events um um two guys have ever done it me and my dad um and I remember him this was actually I don’t know it was 2010 my dad was in Minnesota when I won the last one and he called me uh from one of the champions tour events and he was like Hey welcome to the club and uh that was a pretty cool pretty cool phone call and I I kind of realized then I was like you know what you know I’m I think I should probably take this a little serious um and when it comes to turning pro I I I never really thought about it I thought it would be like a really cool idea but um I think I would say Midway through my junior year at College I was like you know what I I I kind of want to give this a shot um as I progressively you know got better through college and um here we are your dad has been an important part of your life you know putting the golf club in your hand and and I imagine you as aspire to uh what he has done playing on the PJ tour and and the senior tour PJ tour Champions as we call it right now do you remember the first time you beat your dad um I don’t know the exact time it was roughly around 16 years old and the only reason I remember that is because he had a bet with my brother and I all growing up is the first time we get the we beat him he’ll buy us any set of clubs we wanted and I want to say it took me till probably 15 or 16 years old till I you know officially beat him on holes it’s you know tough for me to say it was you know that took me that long but you know he was he was a good player what did you shoot I don’t know the exact I don’t know the exact number um it was under par um he might have had he might have had a tough day but it was um I I I definitely shot under par that day played well um and I think I I think I end up getting a set of Titleist irons ah cool what’s your lowest round ever my lowest round ever not in competition is 59 my lowest competition round is 62 let’s talk about the 59 because it just sounds sexier because it’s 59 what happened yeah I agree yeah it’s uh it was actually at uh your home course there over at Lakewood National the commander course um it was just it was a weird day it was uh just me and my dad and my brother he ended up uh he was supposed to tea off but he work cut him L I think he joined us on maybe the fifth or sixth hole but um it just it was just one of those days I mean I I I was hitting really nice I saw some putts go in i i eagled the first I think I I started off Eagle birdie uh birdie par birdie or something like that I think and um you know out there you know there’s a lot of part fives that are super getable and uh yeah I just I it was just one of those days I I saw a lot of putts go in um and I think my dad mentioned it on I want to say 16 maybe he mentioned something about 59 and I didn’t want to say anything because obviously I knew what was going on but okay stop stop for just a sec or are you is the calculator going in your head do you know where you are at all times like so if you’re eight under or are you just playing and because I hear different things from different players Stuart applebe told me about his 59 he said he never knew it because he was so far back that he thought he had to birdie every hole and then when he birdied 18 at The Greenbrier he has scatty what was that for he said 59 and he just won what what what’s your experience with knowing you’re going low yeah that day I I knew I knew what was going on um there’s definitely been some times in competition that um you know some of the better rounds I’ve had I I kind of blacked out if you will um and didn’t really know exactly what was going on and just kind of was just plugging along um but the day uh the day I shot 59 I I definitely knew what was going on uh but everything was clicking and um you know the last toll over there at at Lakewood Nationals a par five and I hit a perfect drive and I hit a a beautiful hybrid up there to about I don’t know 30 feet maybe just off the green and and it actually lipped out for 58 and it was the uh it was the easiest couple incher 59 putt I’ve ever had so um that day I definitely knew what was going on um super happy to have pulled it off especially with my brother and my dad in the group um but there’s definitely times um you know I I as of late um especially now that I’ve been working with a mental coach that I’ve I’ve kind of you know kind of uh I call it blackout a little bit of you know not really knowing what I’m at or keeping track of what I’m at or knowing you know just kind of playing it like a one shot at a time kind of thing well were you nervous at at all knowing that because there is trouble on the 18th hole on the commander course there’s water right there’s some out of bounds or you just in in a real comfortable place and it’s just it’s just automatic yeah I mean I was I was pretty comfortable uh out there you know I you know like I said I obviously knew what was going on but I had a favorable wind a little down off the right so I knew if I uh you know just put a good swing on it at least you know it it’d be on dry land so um ended up hitting a really good drive and and uh playing the hole about as good as you can so um I uh for I probably had uh the most butterflies I’ve ever had standing on a tea box with not really much on the line at all um that round um but like I said I you know I was super happy to uh you know to pull it off uh especially with those guys in the group does your dad still beat you from time to time he can um for sure it depends on what te’s he plays um if he plays the te’s that he you know he’ll probably he’ll probably call me as soon as he hears this but if he plays a teas he should play um it’s a really good match there’s no doubt about that um if he plays all the way back with us um I’ll I’ll I’ll take me probably 10 out of 10 times okay so what are the appropriates for him is it is it one yeah I wouldn’t say you’re playing all the way back it’s probably it’s probably one up you know he’s he’s you know he’s still a really good golfer there’s no doubt about that his short game’s unbelievable so um if he has a good driving day there’s no there’s no doubt he can compete from the tips if he has a good driving day from one up he’s gonna play well he’s going to shoot in the 60s um so yes to answer your question if if he plays if he plays one up it’s it’s going to be a great match there’s no doubt about it um even if he has a so so driving match because his short game so good um but if he if he’s playing from the back to EAS and he’s not hitting it great then he’s he he he’s gonna have a tough day Kevin Roy is our guest he is the son of Jim Roy who was a previous guest if you haven’t seen it I suggest you go back and watch it our neighbors at Lakewood National absolutely love that so I was trying to put some pressure on you I’m like hey you got a lot to live up to you know based on doing a great job here Kev way to go way to go um your relationship with him and he caddies for you a lot explain to me the father-son dynamic and how it might change when he’s working for you yeah I mean you know my dad is is uh you know to this day you know my biggest supporter you know he wants nothing but the best for me when it especially when it comes to golf um there’s no doubt um there’s times when he’s cing that um you know you can see his competitiveness kind of come out a little bit you know he want you know he’s just rooting for me so hard and um you know I I can’t blame him but I can kind of you know it kind of um I wouldn’t say throws me off but it’s just like you know at the end of the day you know when it when it comes to a a caddy you know you kind of want him just to be kind of even killed you know not show any kind of emotion just kind of you know Just Go With It um but at the end of the day he’s my dad um and and and he’s rooting for me so hard and uh I love having him on the on the bag you know he’s been through pretty much every part of amateur and professional golf you can go through um so the knowledge and um the experience that he has um you know is is about as good as it gets when it when it comes to someone as you know walking walking the fairways with you so um I love having him on the bag he he he’s going to cat for me in a couple uh couple weeks over uh at at the leom at Lakewood National and um you know I’m really looking forward to that and and um you know we’ve we’ve had a lot of a lot of success on the course there’s no doubt about that we’ve had a lot of good tournaments a lot of good things happen and um yeah I mean he he he’s like I said he’s he’s great on the bag I I really enjoy I really enjoy having him out there yeah Kevin Roy is our guest here on its part time my golf story uh big thanks to party drinks if you’re looking for a good drink alternative on the golf course check out out party and asport at the club that you’re uh playing at and for a list of the different places you can log on to drink party.com and a big thanks to the real estate professionals Gan Walsh and Vince visicaro from Suncoast dreams.com a division of fine properties if your dream is to live on a golf course and or in a golf resort Community nobody better than Vince and Jean they can help you out at Sunco streams.com or call 9412 to0 4,000 or if you happen to live on a golf course and it’s time to sell because the Market’s really high and a lot of people want to get in they’re your people as well Kevin um you went there so I’m just going to follow you there talking about some of the dark times in in golf missing Cuts losing a tour card working with somebody to help you on the psychological uh side of the game help me out with something cuz I’m of this belief and I think you share it too anybody that plays competitive golf at some time or another is going to hate the game because what it can do to us what was it like for you when you were at your toughest time yeah I mean I I would uh I would argue with pretty much anybody that says they’ve never if you know someone that’s playing it for a living that they never hated the game before um it’s tough I mean it’s a hard game it’s um it can it can certainly bring you into some some low low points um I was uh yeah I mean I I feel like I’ve seen the lowest of lows when it came when it’s come to this game just you’re depressed you’re uh you know you think about never playing again you know how am I gonna make money how am I GNA do this how am I G to do that it’s it’s um you know you you get in a super depressed spot and uh you know luckily I’ve had um you know between my wife and my mom and dad and you know my brother and sister they’re they’re all huge supporters of mine and you know they’ve always been there for me and um it’s hard I’ve you know I actually I I’ve quit the game before uh back in 2016 I I completely hung out the clubs and um got a job and um you know at the time I was super happy about it it was a great decision looking back at it um you know I worked uh I worked at a restaurant here up in Tampa I I helped my brother out in medical Sals a little bit and um you know at the time it it it made me happy I was I saw some paychecks coming in I was able to you know pay off some credit card debt and um yeah it was it was uh you know it also lit a fire on me you know I I I kind of realized towards the end of that year that you know this is this isn’t what I wanted to do I I I I want to play golf um I played uh played one event um at the end of 2016 a West Florida Golf Tour event and finished second in it was the only competition I I played all year and um that kind of uh you know kind of jolted me back into like you know let’s let’s do this and let’s let’s give this one more run and um you know looking back at it now I I I think it was the best decision I’ve ever made kind of you know getting away from the game a little bit and kind of you know it made me realize you know how much I actually really do enjoy it um because at the time I I hated it I wanted to get so far away from it I it was it was ruining me as a person it was ruining uh my mind it was ruining my lifestyle it was just running me underground and um wasn’t happy at all and um it’s just who it’s just you know it wasn’t who I was and um so you know looking back at it I think that was easily the best decision I’ve ever made was you know stepping away for a little bit but it brought you back and God let me tell you that is a thoughtful honest answer uh um from somebody that’s thought that through probably a couple of times aside from that real good finish on the West Florida golf tour which we uh we’ve had plenty of other guests that are associated with that was there a conversation with somebody or something else that was like okay let’s go back in and maybe do it a little bit differently this time yeah no I I I you know I definitely ran it uh you know past my parents um you know cuz you know even though I was I was was working a little bit it wasn’t wasn’t it wasn’t like I was making a ton of money so you know for me to enter you know Q school again it was uh you know I needed I needed their help um yeah so and and they were super supportive uh of of me trying to do it again and and um you know they paid my way uh into qualifying school that that year and you know I I ended up getting through the final stage I didn’t get full status I got conditional status I I played maybe seven events that year and um you know it was kind of of uh you know a wakeup call was like all right you know you’ve proved that you can get to there let’s you know let’s do it again and um went back to Q School one more time and got and got full status and um and uh you know I played I don’t know I think this is my fourth year on the cor fairy tour now but um yeah looking back at it it it um my parents you know they’ve been there for me you know highs and lows um but you know I definitely uh you know I talked with my dad about and he was super supportive of of me trying to give it one more goal so last year losing your card I’m sure there’s the disappointment in that but when you stepped away and you re-evaluated the season was there a moment where you said you know what if I make a couple changes just improve here and there do you feel like that’s where you belong oh yeah there’s no doubt um you know I I I don’t really look at losing my car is is um a super negative I I feel like I played a lot of a lot better of golf than maybe my results showed I I missed eight cuts by one um so if you know obviously you know that’s tough to swallow but you know I had I had some good finishes I mean I had you know I finished eighth in h Bermuda um which kind of you know there there and then I fin you know a couple top 20s but you know I I think I proved to myself that I there’s no doubt I can compete I think uh a lot of it’s you know up here in the mind um and uh you know that’s what I’ve been working hard with with uh my mental coach Brian Kane but there’s no doubt um that’s where I want to be um and um you know to be honest with you I can’t wait to get back there well your dad described you he he thinks you might be a late bloomer and maybe that’s exactly what it is you’re just one step away I mean it could just be like another good season on the corn fairy tour it could be like a a hot run there are different ways that that you can get there um so we’re getting toward the end here just the theme that I’m picking up on throughout our conversation is the importance of your family and in your life what is a round of golf like with your family I’m sure there’s there’s a lot of love but is there a bit of trash talking going on and um you you describe it yeah take I would say there’s a little bit more trash talking and love going on when uh especially my brother and my dad te it up um you know my mom she can play she can hit it she uh you know she likes getting out there but you know she’s uh she’s more of like a vodka cran and and nine holes kind of girl or lady I should say uh my sister she never really got into golf she’s a she’s a really good athlete she was a Hooper um growing up but you know every you know her soon to be husband is is in love with the game of golf um she uh Lauren can she can definitely hit it she can make contact there’s no doubt but she’s just has no interest in in in playing at all but um when my dad and my brother and I we get out there there’s there’s nothing but uh laughs and and certainly a ton of Trash Talk um we’re in a group chat actually right now we uh we’re playing in a little uh little money scramble thing uh this upcoming weekend and we’re all a team and we’re all uh talking trash and you know Kyle is sitting there saying you know he’s we’re going to use all his shots this and that and um you know I gotta be honest for for Kyle probably has the best attitude for a guy that averages 78 that I’ve ever seen um and then you know my dad he he takes a lot of heat just because you know he uh he’s the old man in the group so we always kind of kid with him that he should be playing up with the seniors and uh to kind of have any kind of chance competing with us but it’s uh at the end of the day it’s all love it’s all fun it’s all you know we’re just having some fun but there’s uh there’s it’s non-stop banter there’s no doubt about that well I’ll tell you what if uh somebody can’t make it one time or if you have two forom and somebody drops out like Kevin wallik who I know is now watching the podcast and everything he’s a good friend of your dad’s and you played some golf with him and you need a fourth with can you give me a call I mean I’m right around the corner I’ll bring some party I mean I bring something to the as long as we can ride in the same cart and have some party I’m let’s do it all right hey that’s good Kevin Hey listen I I wish you all the best on on the upcoming season really looking forward to the leom Sun Coast Classic and uh
