that’s upcoming at Northern bear with tournament director Darcy anic as always we have our trivia contest at 940 where one lucky listener will win at fitting at the tailor made performance center and a gift card to The Keg Steakhouse and bar this week’s question of the week with all the garbage weather we’ve had this year is would you rather play on a day with a huge wind and no rain or rain with no wind and we’ll talk about that that’s all we’ve been playing in this I know until this week last few days we finally got some summer looks like yeah absolutely amazing and everyone saying oh how hot oh my God it’s so hot it’s not hot it’s just we haven’t been used to seeing 22° yet that’s right yeah 22 is hot my goodness now stalker you have a big bet on the orders to win the Stanley Cup I got a little bet yeah I bet them when they were 12 to1 when they back in November when they were two 210 and one or something and looking like they had no chance well and and here we go one go tonight game not tonight tonight don’t turn the TV on tonight expecting a hockey game ST that’s right all right well this segment is brought to you by the Evon elk celebrate 75 Seasons with us this summer by hosting your next corporate event in one of our exclusive sues Limited availability remains for all elks home games visit go els.com to book your private Suite today and tough loss for the Elks again unbelievable it is like they could be 3 and0 easily and they’re 0 and three yeah tied with the three time in a row well two time Cup champions and in the final last year so in the cup three years in a row Winnipeg Blue Bombers also own three yeah and then they lost in the last second field goal last night and that roughing the kicker penalty certainly didn’t help them didn’t yeah I think that was I mean would they I have won if they didn’t get maybe but overtime probably for sure but I don’t know it is just unbeliev one thing after another no question but uh I see him on the screen there look at that good-look guy Jim Boomer how are you buddy I’m good I’m good it’s a good nice Sunday morning for a change you’re just alluding to the weather there well we’re getting a couple of good ones in a row I hope here now well let’s let’s have how about three months in a row Boomer what do you think I think we would take that wouldn’t we yeah AB absolutely well Jim you invited me to come out and play with you a few weeks back uh at Wolf Creek and the conditions on the old course when we played were absolutely outstanding talk about how far the conditions have come since uh gulf North bought Wolf Creek and and you jumped on board with them yes well eight months ago I guess is when I I started and it was pretty uh apparent that Golf North was going to uh fall follow up in the money Department with anything that was going good at Wolf Creek starting then of course with the kind of superintendent and his crew that we had all we all know that what shows up uh it shows up eight months later uh in terms of what kind of work and and as you know with uh the money that helps get our water situation and all those things going suddenly we come through a winter where we didn’t lose any momentum from the fall and uh all of a sudden we got these conditions and as we know the love for this place is is pretty high you don’t have to promote all that hard if somebody’s ever seen it when it was good and it’s going to be good again never thought that we’d be saying Jim Boomer without innisville yes well it certainly has come up a few times but inale is not far away so I’m certainly seeing lots of good friends from there too which is which isn’t hurting so that’s great you renovated the uh club house too right yes well that’s been huge thing we we we were going to just renovate the kitchen and then we had a pipe burst mid January actually if you can believe it the same night that the the the thing happened at Northern bear we we had this major flood and so now it turned into a full renovation of the whole building so if you get a chance to come and see us Curtis you’ll have to do that it’s uh not just the building but of course as we talk the golf courses are uh are getting better every day that’s great to hear what what’s the menu like at at Wolf Creek now well our our new food and beverage manager of course now with the new kitchen just open and he’s he’s got some serious talent in that department I think the the menu is going to be uh really worth coming out to have a look for even if you’re just coming by for dinner it’s certainly something we’re promoting and uh I know people will be back uh lots of times if they come once you’ve got two uh 18 hole award-winning courses at Wolf Creek how is access to get on the courses I I think what we’re finding is it’s it’s obviously starting out that lots of access and it’s it’s going to narrow down because we we just have I mean there’s so many people now that are trying to get on but at the same time I’ll promise you that uh if you’re uh if you’re interested in getting on just give us a call and we’ll uh we’ll make sure you get on because with 36 holes uh there’s lots of options joining us on the VIP Golf Show presented by art at Roof Systems is Jim Boomer head professional and general manager at the Wolf Creek Golf Resort now uh Boomer the old course is just an absolutely outstanding layout that’s so fun to play share some of the highlights of the old course for you what are what are your favorite uh parts of that course well I guess the favorites become the parts that have bit you the worst uh over the years and uh you think there’s probably you know a shot different situations the ninth hole where you always were challenged with that second shot in um number two the t- shot uh we could the 12 pole trying to get that ball in play right side of the Fairway I mean there’s just probably six or seven shots the 11th hole which seems to it seems to me that Gremlins must live down there on that hole because you can never seem to trust your alignment or any number of things it should be an automatic four or five but it just seems to always often not turn out that way you talked about hole number nine during the old Canadian tour I can’t remember his name but he put one in there he was leading the tournament came away with an 11 Carlos Espinosa I believe I was working there at that time Carlos esposa there’s a big lead and found the bushes out on the on the right side of nine but Buffalo jumped number 11 that’s a great hole lots of options on that one too Jim it sure is like that’s that to me is such I remember uh when Philip Jonas came here and won the Canadian assistance a few years ago he ended up playing it with three seven irons because he just couldn’t get it he I mean a good player like that that couldn’t get it in his head how to play the hole and and that was the way he handled it for the four days and won the tournament so it’s a very unique hle Boomer you never even mentioned number four number four haven’t even mentioned it yet yeah well I don’t I don’t play anymore so it’s just you you can imagine how much different it is down there where you can where I can still hit a three-wood and then a a shorter Club in but boy when you play it from the back to even that little bit of distance yeah what a golle what do you use off the tea well I three-wood off the tea there well actually Forwood because I can’t get three-wood in the air anymore but the Forwood and then and then of course probably about a nine iron in but that seems to be my best chance of uh having a a crack at a par anyway well it’s a it’s a d Jim Ian legot used to play who played on what was known as the Canadian tour back then called Wolf Creek his favorite golf course and he’s played a lot of golf courses so he should know but he just loved it well it’s just it’s just such an interesting thing to be part of the The Rebirth of it because there’s so many things Rod whitmann was by the other day and uh you know again a guy that went out and played it and was pleased you know the the the reputation that he has now and so on it’s just nice to see uh how the the the love for the place I mean it was Rod’s first golf course so uh you can imagine how he feels about it too yeah yeah he’s always loved it now he’s done cabit links and Blackhawk and courses around the world he’s a genius absolutely and then uh very interesting to talk to anytime you get a chance with him of course yeah joining us on the VIP golf show is Jim Boomer from Wolf Creek uh now the Links Course has also been well recognized as another outstanding Rod Whip and design how does it differ from the old course I think mostly the size of the greens and you’ve got more room so you got bigger greens and you’ve got a little more room uh when you go out there I think with the modern game but I’m noticing the young guys of course that can hit the golf ball uh every time they play it it seems like they’re a little more appreciative of what it brings uh it it is really an amazing course in a different way from the old course but I think that’s uh time has sort of caused that to happen given how much uh different the young guys play the game now I know a guy who plays he’s a member at Wolf Creek lives in Emon but he drives out there three times a week to play he wears no shoes he walks barefoot on the grass there I guess that that’s a good uh that’s a pretty good recommendation right there isn’t it yeah thank you yeah yeah he just loves it it Wolf Creek but what are your some of your favorite holes on the link course well that the actually the the very the 10th Hole uh is you know is it’s sort of a a very much in the wild kind of a hole but it’s just got so much going for it you can cut off as much as you want or which will get you in the hay you can kind of the way it’s designed or you know there’s just a lot of holes out there that there isn’t a lot of trouble but you just find you you really need to know uh what the lines are for you to play and of course selecting the right te is is extra important go ahead sir no I was just going to say that the the uh there’s just so many situations on that golf course I think it could host some really uh High Caliber tournaments because it could play uh you know as long as you want it to play and then certainly uh with pin positions and so on that they can do these days uh it could be an outstanding test for uh for us to host something pretty special a lot of risk reward holes out there there really is and yet it isn’t the same kind of as you know the number of uh I mean certain situations on the old for are if you don’t make the shot it’s death and of course if uh out there you’re going to find it and so on so forth so it’s probably a little easier to get around with uh less golf balls well Boomer uh if people are looking to get out and play wolf which they should I I’ll vot for it 100% when I play there I’m sure it’s better today than it was when I played with you too so if people are looking out and uh want to get out and play at the wolf how and they book Tea Times just give us a call 40378 36050 uh call the pro shop and of course you can you can book Times online as well all right Boomer and one more for you with all this crazy weather you probably heard it off the top our question of the week on the show is would you rather play golf on a rainy day with no wind or a big wind and no rain because we’ve had nothing but that all year pretty much so what’s your choice anything at all without the wind that would I would I’d go for rain and no wind yeah any any question all right well you know really appreciate your time Jim great to see you and great to talk with you and best of luck the rest of the season we’ll have I I you were somebody on again a little bit later to see how the season’s going but uh but I hope it hope it’s going well for you buddy you deserve it yeah thank you so much we’re we’ll keep her going here thanks so watch both you guys all right thanks Jim Jim Boomer from the Wolf Creek Golf Resort now before we get to the break $100,000 I’ll take the rain over the wind anytime two people have said that uh and our normal text of the day well now that the US Open is over and the players uh can go back to throwing darts at uh pins again what do you think the winning score will be in this one today uh I don’t I don’t know what I think the winning it’s going to go really low today it’s already really low so yeah uh I don’t even I’m just going to check what they I think they’re at 18 I’m going to say 24 under winds today yeah sounds about right 4 2 yeah all right and good morning jents well no one took dambo last week so both of you are five and three this week has a ton of possibilities who’s winning The Travelers uh this week and once again stalker you and I are absolutely on the same page we’re five and three which is okay it’s okay I can’t believe we didn’t take dampo I know and he’s man we we’ll talk about that in the open segment but D Shambo is just lighting the golf world on fire right now with his personality and popularity unbelievable is it it is crazy but uh complete change yeah I’m taking sheffler and I know you’re taking sheffler yeah yeah I don’t think Sheffer is going to going to lose this week I mean he’s getting hot so uh we birdied his last four holes yesterday to finish so he’ll probably just keep on rolling I think all right well right now we’re going to jump in with Kevin Smith good morning Kev how are you can’t hear you are you on mute Kevin you don’t have my audio oh we got you now you got you got me now okay great yeah um yeah well I was on last Sunday with you guys and and as I was driving up to Trestle Creek didn’t you get an ace Murray I did yeah unbelievable how many is that for you that’s number three but it was 31 years between two and three so I waited a while wow well that is something else um yeah I just spent the last five days at Trestle Creek so we can we can talk a little bit about the uh the Alberta midm Championship was there how did the week go at Trestle Creek uh with the mid Masters and I know you played so we got to hear about how you did as well the blowby blow of uh of some of my blow ups yeah um well first off uh and I was able to stay on property in in a mobile home it’s just such an amazing property and Alvin Clark the owner Mike Lewis the sales manager knew the had Pro I mean they just did a fantastic job hosting everyone um the golf course as you reminded me Curtis some of those greens have elephants buried under them and I think I had 40 some odd putts in my second competitive round this past surprised three put after three putt after three put after like it’s just very the greens keep you on your toes yeah but um we had a champion um actually an American his name is from Denver he was visiting um from Denver on a work trip and decided to play the midm he’s actually on the board of the Denver Golf Association um lit the place up shot five under power one by six Strokes um but in that final group on the final round Brian lobman from Highlands uh was over the SE this the uh the par five 17th hole and two in the back bunker and we got it on video him just jugging this you know one in a thousand Bunker show and he said it was the highlight of his week so Brian lobman and Tom McKinley Jr ended up tied for second Ken Griffith a former Alberta senior Champion finished fourth but uh great week great competition first time we’ve had phenomenal weather yeah yeah no kidding it felt like felt like summer out there so um yeah it was a great competition um I was able to get a drone up in the air and showcase the chorus and the land uh Mike Lewis who’s the the sales guy took in his gator and showed me the new nine that’s already been cut out of the forest so three of the holes are done and there’s six more that that have already been cut out so uh it’s going to be 27 holes there in the next coming years and and that new nine looks pretty spectacular as well so can’t say enough good things about about Trestle Creek it’s it’s it’s a special place to uh to spend some time out and and golf yeah it’s got everything you could ask for more at Trestle Creek all the other amenities they offer with the the Skip and the wire the beach and yeah the water park Beach wake boarding yeah I know it’s it’s pretty cool you can float the Pema river right near there and and uh yeah so so yeah so I spent five days there um as far as um me competing yeah I saw you miss the cut what’s that I saw you miss the cut now you did you purposely make a 12 on the last hole or something like that so you could actually do your job the final day or what yeah you know I’ve been playing well I prepped well I’m a five handicap out of melson national um you know I felt like most parts of my game were were pretty solid I played a practice around with James varnum on the Monday and started the first round and I think about 13 14 holes in like okay the first two three holes were Bogies and then I settled into I don’t know maybe a nine or 10 whole stretch of par Golf and just kind of felt like okay this is just going to be a normal round I’ll post my 77 and and I think on the the two power fives on the back which are birdie holes I managed to go five over on those two par fives one was a t-shot on a slightly wrong line couldn’t find it so you know you ret and then you bogey the ret um anyway so posted an 82 in the first round which I probably thought should have been a 77 or 78 and you know played quite solid but yeah the second round um 44 pot I think it was you know so missed the cut and had a lot of fun uh it’s just it’s so much different in competition to stay out of trouble for 36 holes I’ll tell you that much no kidding next up is the Alberta men’s amateur at the Derek that should be a fun event yeah the Derek we held our senior men’s championship there back in 2019 when Ken Griffith won right um Ethan Wilson defending champion in his fail last year for the menam I I looked at the the pairings today I didn’t see Ethan Wilson’s name in there so I have to find out um unless I missed it for some reason why he’s not defending but um yeah the Derek it’ll be a great uh great host site and you know some of the names that that we always see in the men’s am are in the field Brandon Maru Jesse Galvin Barrett gerash um I think this young Jake chin is going to be a handful this week for the field he’s uh just won the uh the Glen comutational and qualified for the RBC Canadian open this year so definitely some some good names in there Neil Thomas always seems to be a factor in the men’s he is year after year I think Barett gerash is going to be right there he knows the course well he’s pretty short he can eat it up with his length I think he’ll be there yeah well yeah when you Neil played well at the ranch a couple years ago when Brady McKinley got the win yeah so uh you know you and I have both watched Neil quite a bit Barrett gerash won the midam last year at windir in a great battle um with Ryan weary and in a playoff there so those are some of the names I see and and and you’re right with I think the Derek isn’t overly long so yeah I think I think the bombers the Galvin the geres will probably have a have a good shot to have their name up there yeah no question the front nine is short but the the back Nine’s pretty lengthy yeah there’s a few holes in the back nine that uh but but it’s open so the bombers can still bomb it so well uh the PGA America’s at Northern bear this week supports youth on course a program with Alberta Golf share information on that program and the importance of the support from this event in the success of Youth on course yeah so I’ll actually be heading to Northern bear today they have a mjt future stars competition whoever wins that gets a spot in the tournament this week so that’ll be a Big Thrill for whichever young golfer in Alberta plays in that today yeah um but yeah played the the media day on Friday at Northern bear with with some of the ATB staff um you know we all know the story of their Clubhouse burning down in January incredible that ATB has supported the tournament and said we’re running it there anyway and uh you know we didn’t have good weather last year I think we’re going to have good weather this year the the forecast looks great um yeah youth on course uh this is the sixth year we’ve run the program in Alberta 25 courses where you can play for $5 five if you’re under 18 Northern bear is one of those courses and it’s a subsidy program um we had 1,000 rounds in 2019 we’re probably going to be close to 10,000 rounds this year so that’s such a great program 10,000 rounds uh it’s amazing to get these kids playing golf courses for a cheap rate we subsidize it and you got a fundraise for it and so working with ATB last year um you know they gave us a check for 55,000 to help subsidize the program so we’re fundraising again this week ATB classic.com there’ll be an online raffle going up I believe today or tomorrow um 5050 um raffle so you know online auction there’s lots of different ways you you can donate and and try and um keep the youth on course program going and then the tournament itself you know ATB classic it goes uh Thursday through Sunday at Northern beay and I mean some of these players no doubt will be on the PGA tour you know in the next half decade or so yeah going to be amazing week no question one last Quick one for you before we let you go uh our question of the week on the show is with all this crazy weather we’ve had would you rather play on a rainy day with no wind or a very windy day with no rain well you know what of course I play out of it’s always windy there um I’ll take the rain all day any day yeah yeah rain and no wind I can deal with that but when it’s belowing 40 or 50 you know it’s fun Michels in National at 40 to 50K wins would not be fun man it’ still be fun well I will say though that um in July August September October the wind does calm down quite a bit at melson and uh it’s just some of the May May June rounds can get up there but you know overall it’s not as windy as you think there yeah good stuff well we’ll catch up with you again next week as we preview another event busy busy summer with you and Alberta Golf so keep it rolling bud I’ll be here in Evon all week and uh go Oilers all right all right you bet go Oilers all right that was Kevin Smith from Berta Golf Now Zach if you can quickly get Lan cross on the phone and stalker while he’s getting him on the phone it is now time for the century mile minute home to thrilling live thr bread quarter horse and Standardbred racing action exciting slots and electric electronic table games vibrant dining and more senty mile is the entertainment destination located next to the Evon International Airport for more information visit centur mile.com and what are you looking at this week for the horse pick stalker I got two of them uh two horses ran on Friday I haven’t seen a horse lose by as much ground at the start and then still win as a horse called wrong spot did he got left by about 10 lengths and he still one going away uh he was claimed out of that race by multiple Alberta leading trainer uh Tim roft and depending on how high they raise his horse in class he’s going to be real tough the other horse is wedg Pond who got squeezed in the lane by the rail horse lost all momentum but still was going pretty well at the end if he put into a race next time that doesn’t have a lot of speed expect him to go wi to wire so wrong spot and wedge Bond all right how is your horse gone lately no he was supposed to he’s supposed to run this week all right well we’ll keep posted on that one for sure and that was a century mile minute and do we have lock on the phone hey lock how are you yes we do how are you today I’m doing fantastic well thanks for jumping on uh with us uh last minute now I know I’m assuming a lot of our listeners know who you are but uh now lock did I hear a rumor this week that you’re going back to the bear is that a TR a true rumor yes yeah it is they contacted me a couple of weeks ago and I’m going to be doing some coverage for summer vacation so um this business can be a bit of a wild ride I don’t need to tell you guys that yeah we were part of it last year no question well good for you now you work with the mutual friend of of the show Stacy disel from Ardent rof system our presenting sponsor and you guys have a charity uh tournament upcoming so hit us up with the details on the charity tournament how people can get involved well um first off we’ll hit the web page artn systems.com and right on the main page you can click and it’ll uh take you to a page where you can sign up get any information you want um also there’s I think Stacy’s got although he’s got a bunch of sponsors this year more so than he’s had in the P past but there might be a couple of whole sponsorships left and um silent more for Alberta golf.org we return to the VIP Golf Show presented by ardan R systems with your host Murray mccort and Curtis St only on your Clear Choice For Sports Edmonton Sports Talk welcome back to the VIP Golf Show presented by Ardent Roof Systems on Edmonton Sports Talk I’m Murray mccort here along with Curtis St this segment brought to you by the PGA of Alberta looking to shed strokes this summer Alberta’s PGA professionals know their stuff from equipment and Technology to Tech technique they’re the most trusted resource for getting more out of your game you love visit pgav alta.com to get to know your pro today and joining us is a local golf professional from the PJ of Alberta Liz Carr from the Edmonton petroleum Golf and Country Club good morning Liz how are you I’m doing well thanks for having me here today W appreciate you coming into the studio and uh we love it when people come in the studio and join us so thanks for doing that yeah so uh let’s talk about how you got started in the golf business and what your journey in the industry has included so far for sure yeah so I am in uh year three at the Edmonton Petroleum Club so just Southwest of the city uh prior to that I worked at uh windir with Jason natu so uh great great start in my industry here in Edmonton with him under his leadership um and prior to that uh played on the mchan golf team so during my accounting degree there um I was able to make quite a few friends uh on the men’s and women’s golf team um and ultimately my start in the industry started with my best friend Rachel weeb who’s now with the Royal Melbourne uh she was the one who kind of gave me the gentle push out of accounting and into golf uh realizing I was much happier working with people than with numbers so anyways are you playing very much right now or are you mostly teaching I will say my running joke Curtis is that I can probably make you a better golfer than I am myself so not a lot of golf being played but hard to do what uh what how do you set goals with your students and what do you do to help motivate them yeah that’s a great question so I believe a very integral part of the teaching process is making sure that the students are part of their goal setting process so um one of the biggest things when uh individuals are learning golf is you know we see a lot of great players on TV we may know a lot of good golfers in our community in our in our Circle um and making sure sure that golfers have a realistic understanding of expectations of improvement is really really important so really really breaking things down and making sure that they have uh personal goals instead of you know oh this is what my friend is shooting this is what I’m seeing on TV so enrolling them in that goal setting process as far as understanding where Improvement needs to be made how they’re going to make that Improvement and what kind of time they need to dedicate to get to the level that they’re hoping to play at is super important and how do you make that environment comfortable and authentic sure yeah so I believe some of the best learning environments are where um people are vulnerable so a making sure that they feel comfortable with the interaction that they’re having with their golf coach or their professional that they’re working with uh some of the things you know personally demoing golf shots on the course or on the driving range um if I mess up a shot here or there I’m not super critical when I’m showing them what we’re working on um allowing them to feel that they have a safe space to learn as far as making mistakes uh I believe that creating that fostered um vulnerability is really really important because we’re not all going to be great right out of the gates what do students come looking for most what’s the question you could ask the most or how to fix and how do you fix it so as to the bane of most golf professionals everybody is looking for consistency and so to boil down what consistency means to each student is very very important so for some people that’s hitting Fairways for some people that’s you know ball flight or directional consistency so really throwing that back with open-ended questions for the student is important because they need to hear uh with their own words what they’re looking for in their golf game so again a lot of people and I’m sure you hear it too Murray hey I want to be a little bit more consistent what does that truly mean to the student so really trying to find out what that part of their game is lacking well Liz I retired from teaching about 20 some years ago so I don’t hear that anymore you lucky you joining us on the VIP golf show is Liz Carr associate professional at the Edmonton petroleum golf and country club in your opinion Liz how important is it to ensure your students know the how and why of any swing changes that you’re making with them for sure yeah no another great question so involving the student in that process of shaping and changing their swing uh allows them to be a little bit more accountable to the changes that they’re hoping to make so by ensuring that they have an understanding of the direction that uh me as their instructor is trying to take them I believe that they can be a little bit more open to feedback they can provide insight to me on how things are feeling looking um how their golf game is improving by tying them into the direction that we’re hoping to go I believe it kind of solidifies the learning process for them that’s great what are the differences between teaching men and women or is there a difference yeah I was I was uh thinking about this question on the way over and not to tiptoe over these things but I have some very broad sweeping generalizations that I’m hoping are not going to offend anybody but I will say going back to uh that sort of vulnerability and comfort that I really hope to uh encourage in my students learning environment uh women are generally a lot more comfortable with the you know kind of breakdown of the golf game in the in the interm to seek Improvement uh some of the men that I teach are very results driven right off the bat and so definitely adjusting as a coach and instructor to um meet expectations of uh how quickly the students are learning I would say sometimes women are a little bit more okay with that vulnerable learning period um and I would also say that a lot of women are very keen to hear about hey that shot was incorrect on the Range why did I do that they’re looking for that immediate feedback uh shotto shot um so they are very keen to hear what did I do wrong there how can I fix it and where can I where can I improve on so yeah not to make any generalizations but those would be the two that I would say are most prominent for me how about equipment how important do you think it is for people to understand their equipment and how their clubs can work effectively for them for sure yeah and so this ties into quite a bit of learning for for beginner golfers uh I think there are a lot of people who watch golf enjoy golf they watch other people play golf uh or perhaps just look at their equipment in their bag and you know again beginner golfers tend to make assumptions on how and why certain clubs are meant to work uh and whether that’s a wedge where they believe they need to help add Loft to a shot or a driver where they really feel that they need to um hit down on the ball like all these misconceptions uh that really are not helping the golfer effectively use the equipment that they have purchased so um again especially for those that are new to the game uh I would encourage you to ask and speak to your professional how are your clubs supposed to work for you because that is going to allow you uh the most effective learning experience and allow for a little bit better communication between your golf professional and you um with how that club is going to make you a better golfer at the end of the day we got a unbelievable practice facility at the Pete club with three-hole practice Loop that’s got to be a great for you it’s wonderful yeah no uh Kyle Boyd and uh our head professional there and uh Keith blay are Turf Care um he is they keep that place in tiptop shape so we are very fortunate I mean I can’t speak to the Western Canadian hemisphere but in Alberta I would say we have by far the best practice facility and you know having the ability to work on uh short game within 100 yards off of the driving range and then the three-hole practice Loop uh it really allows us professionals that work there to work on the more golf management side of the game so what are our students really doing what are they thinking when they’re on the course without us having to book a tea time really really helpful to see more so what’s going on in between the ears out there well I got invited to play there last year for the first time in maybe three or four or five years before it was built and I was walking out to warm up before I played I’m just like my jaw was like yeah like unbelievable facility there and like that place has got to be selling you guys some memberships because like there’s no other place in this area for a long long way that you can have that type of facility to practice at that or learn so that’s phenomenal for sure and I would say that paired with we have a an excellent teaching staff there as well so we get a lot of uh families who are very keen you know we’ve got excellent Junior clinics excellent women’s clinics that we do um and our private instruction segment at The Petroleum Club is a very very strong part of why people are joining that place and the golf course itself is unbelievable in my opinion it’s got the best four finishing holes in the city and 15 is that part of three with the bunker that sits right in front 16 the dog leg right over the trees if you can 17 dog leg right left left 17 and 18 par five uh that’s really beautiful usually if people are walking off the course with a smile on their face after those last four holes they’re they they’ve had a good day on the course yeah those are tough holes those 16 17 back to back you par those two holes and that’s that’s that’s a good day for sure you know I want to ask you about how you promote community and support during the learning process when you’re teaching that’s uh something I’m really interested to hear about for sure yeah so uh I feel very strongly uh about Community initiatives Murray like these things have always been near and dear to me as I was coming up in the golf industry I felt I was always you know playing junior golf there were always other guys around or I was playing with adults you know it was never really a a community or specially women Centric uh environment for me to grow up in which is again I’m here as I am but uh to make sure that uh other PE other women have the opportunity to feel more involved in the community as they’re learning um I’ve partnered with uh the goat track Social Club so the guys out at Rundle Park they do these uh Friday night socials whether you’re an amateur professional um they encourage people to come out it’s a par three or sorry sorry Garrett it’s a short course so we’ve got par 3es and Par fours out there uh usually sea change Brewing is out there to make it a very nice social event uh they work very hard to make sure that there are uh two person scramble like any sort of format that you may not have access to um not belonging to a golf course uh that Community is really looking forward to uh providing that sense of community without the costs associated with it um I run a bunch of uh women’s golf clinics at The Petroleum Club and throughout the city during the summer again just to really Foster that Community environment uh one of the biggest barriers to golf is people uh women in particular feeling like they don’t have other people to golf with you know whether it’s friends uh or their friend spouses or their family um because we’re such still such a small demographic in the golfing world uh fostering those connections with other people that have the similar interest and desire to play golf in whatever capacity golf speaks to you whether it’s competitive or you know a nine and dine or just a driving range uh session fostering that uh sort of environment is really really important I believe to um attain and retain uh golfers in Edmonton well if people are looking to connect with you to get instruction how can they find you that’s another very good question so recently um I’ve been working with two Engineers out of the University of Alberta they have developed an app called swing match and so swing match is actually an app that is supposed to connect golfers with their best fit instructor so if you are looking for golf instruction whether it’s with me or otherwise I encourage you to take a look at swing match it will connect you you will make a profile you’ll be paired with an instructor whether that’s somebody close by somebody who has a specialty in short game lessons or long game whatever you need um it’s a locally grown app app that again will connect you and with an instructor swing match swing match match yeah yeah sounds good what about your email address though so people can just email you directly if they want to find you easier than that for sure people can find me um uh at The Petroleum Club so ecar petroleum golf.car post today it is e. game seven 4 to one Edmonton 4 to one Edmonton well I’m on the hangout here on Edington Sports talk tomorrow from 9: until 11: so you can tune in I’ll be talking all breaking down a lot of the game tomorrow with Matt aan and Tom gazola and everything on the hangout here on EV sport tomorrow but you know I think it’s pretty hard pressed to think that evon’s going to lose now but I got what I was saying to you and Zach when I I came in this morning like this entire city is expecting to win right now and I’m terrified what’s going to happen to the city if they don’t win cuz that bubble will just burst and I I don’t know what the reaction will be because it won’t be pretty but I do think the orders are going to win the first goal first go will absolutely both ways yeah yeah I don’t think they always say the first goal in a game is is huge it’s but in game seven game seven it is more than huge uh tomorrow no question about it well as we head around yeeg we’re joined by Rob James head professional of the Stony plane Golf Club good morning Rob how you doing great guys thanks for having me on yeah appreciate you joining us now you guys have a big event at the golf course today did it already get on the course or is it about to get on the course uh it’s about we might hear the air raid siren in the background it was a 9:00 shotgun start uh they got a great morning the course is in fantastic shape the weather is finally cooperating after a prettyy sluggish start and uh yeah if we can get a 9 o’clock start going at 9:05 we’ve we’ve won because it’s it’s a lot of work getting a major event on the golf course all at the same time and getting all the registrations in and traffic out in Stony plane you never know you might get that train every now and then so you get that last minute straggler but we’re in for a good morning this grp that we have this morning is in for a treat well Rob before we get into Stony plane yesterday was the 20th anniversary of you breaking the world record playing 851 holes in 24 hours tell us about that incredible accomplishment that uh like that’s pretty special man yeah you know what it’s amazing that it’s 20 years now uh the adventure kind of started back in 2001 so it was a four-year kind of cycle of my life to make this thing work um had the opportunity to do a charity event with Kevin Hogan my old employer at Victoria uh there were four of us that played so I I kind of got the idea a couple years after that wondering you know just how many one person could play if you had the whole Golf Course to yourself and researched the record there was a gentleman that was a PJ of America member that had that record uh from 1990 and it was 846 holes uh so when I heard that I’m like well that’s that’s pretty much impossible I had to figure out how he did it uh gave him a shout and he kind of walked me through it and I at the time was 23 years old thought I knew everything about conditioning and and stamina and was a pretty decent golfer I had a great opportunity to do it at Victoria where there isn’t any water um so yeah that’s where the idea started and I I was in for a bit of a shock the 2001 attempt didn’t go as great as I had planned I I I still played 729 holes which was a heck of a lot of holes uh but the body just did not cooperate for the whole event and I had to kind of grind through it cuz there were I wasn’t the only one out there there was always 50 to 75 volunteers out there for the entire 24 hours and I didn’t really want to let them down so kind of grinded through it um had a year to think about it to do it again and for those of you that were there the second year I was a whole and a half short so with a year of preparation and and 24 hours of golf to to come up only a ho and a half short of breaking the record it was kind of inevitable inevitable that I had to do it again uh 2003 uh just absolutely killing it halfway through but there was a chance of a thunderstorm That was supposed to roll in in the evening it turned into about six or seven hours of just absolute downpour wind uh I think it got down to three or four degrees I think if you actually researched weather records in Edmonton on June 21st uh 2003 might be the all-time low uh it was so cold um so we didn’t get we came short there too 818 holes That season so again you got to do it again got to give it one more try and that that was it that was 2004 we had a backup date in mind if if the weather didn’t look great but all all the stars aligned the courses in great shape my stamina was good I’d learned enough about it for the first three years to know how to do it and uh I had about 14 or 15 minutes to spare afterwards once I broke the record so I snuck in five more holes uh yeah an 851 that was that was 20 years ago uh now if I wake up and I play 18 holes and I don’t hurt uh it’s a miracle I I think that for years of my life is has caught up to me because it’s I’m not that I just turned 46 and I literally I go to bed I wake up and I’m like what did I do uh I hurt and all I do is just get out of bed so playing a round of golf now instead of 47 in one day is uh is now a feat that which is really sad because I feel like I’m in great shape but I think that four years did do a toll on a lot of the body unfortunately you played as fast as you played you played I was out there watching some incredible golf do you remember how many birdies you had yeah I think the last year that I did it I had uh I had 47 birdies um I don’t know I the overall score I think was like 3,472 or something like that I used to have all those numbers memorized but uh I only ever made two Eagles I actually made two Eagles in a three- hole stretch and that was in uh the third year um I mean there’s just I just played the the part the the fr9 at Victoria it’s obviously short but it had to be a yardage that would that satisfied the the Guinness record uh recommendations but uh I wasn’t going for the par fives and two there’s just the one that was out there and and I managed to to Eagle number four and then two holes later I hold out from the middle of the Fairway on hole six and wow I think I play I shot 32 in 12 and a half minutes it was the stupidest of gol uh my best friend in life Kyle Stinson was driving me at the time and it was just it’s a great experience to have my buddy on the bag or sorry not on the bag he was driving the cart I was passenger the whole time just jumping in and out uh so it was a really memorable nine holes um out of the whatever the the 3500 holes in total there’s only a couple of them I actually remember I was so so doped up on allergy medication painkillers adrenaline uh there’s really not a ton that I remember but that three- hole stretch in 2003 was was really memorable now now Rob that’s not really fair you know because stalker hasn’t made that many birdies in his life and you made it in one day yeah yeah it was was something else but well let’s jump into Stony plane share details on your new custom fitting program with the club this year yeah we’ve had a pretty good uh start to the season we’ve uh brought in some programming that’s new to us uh Jeff and I have been here for nine years now and we’ve we’ve really kind of grinded it out and and we sat down in the off seat season and said let’s let’s add some additional Staffing in place Let’s uh enjoy what we’ve kind of turned around here at the club and and one of those programs was custom fitting so we we brought Bob mckernan on board uh Bob has had a history at dors and golf town and is very well known in the Edmonton Community Edmonton area uh incredible fitter and having that opportunity to do that Outdoors um so essentially every day could be a demo day out here so we’ve got that opportunity for people to to come out use Bob’s expertise uh combine with trackman uh to get that that correct fit so that when the investment is made it’s a it’s a purchase that makes sense it’s the it’s the proper equipment uh and there’s some confidence when when when that trigger is pulled because equipment’s up there when you’re replacing an entire bag uh it’s it’s an investment so you want to be very confident with with your fit and bought is the right guy to do that so that’s a huge addition to our programming out here at Stony plane this season also new to Stony plane this year as you got teaching professional Graham Nelson aboard what are yeah what are the different lesson options available in your program you got tons of options i’ would imagine we really do yeah Graham’s been a welcome addition uh there’s just a a huge Market out here uh in the Stony plane area Parkland County area uh Spruce Grove area so we’ve had that opportunity to kind of grow our teaching program with graham Nelson uh he’s doing beginner women’s clinics a ton of Summer Junior programming that’s underway uh with additional dates uh so all those uh resources are available at our website which is golf stl.com uh but Graham’s a great teacher so he’s he’s primarily looking after some K clinics and larger classes uh but still has a very good following from uh his days when he was at the Derek uh but he is he’s made it work this this spring wasn’t ideal we were all out there in six s Degree Days with those 60 kilm hour winds uh so to have great be very successful out of the gates with a with a not a great start with Mother Nature cooperation and then on the other end of it with Bob doing the custom fitting we’ve we we’ve seen that this these programs have some great traction and and now that we’re into the Summer where we not dealing with those colder temperatures and high winds uh we’re seeing that momentum just carried forward from the start of the season maray was telling me that cath’s all excited about new drink specials at the turn what are these drinks absolutely yeah no we’re pretty happy to have some additional opportunities out there to uh to enjoy the day out in the golf course so uh we have the transfusions which are all our age right now uh some homemade Arnold Palmer as well so there’s the alcoholic version and the non-alcoholic version for those of you that want them uh the John daes all that stuff so yeah I mean you want to enjoy your experience out here obviously uh in moderation for sure but there’s there’s some opportunities to to have a good time and uh I know our Our nine-hole Ladies league in the Tuesday afternoons uh they all get a a little $10 food and beverage credit with their nine-hole round to golf and you know they’re checking in earlier for their tea times now and enjoying a pregame warm-up uh or you know an after game beverage as well so there’s there’s some opportunities in the food and beverage side to yeah to enjoy yourself out here for the full day you’re hosting the PGA of Alberta championship in August uh that’s a big feather in the cap yeah we’ve uh you know what we’ve had such a great uh history of Hosting big events whether it’s part of the PG of Alberta or whether it’s Alberta Golf Association or Edmonton golf Association um last year we had the assistance Championship so yeah we sat down in the winter and kind of you know toyed around a couple different ideas around with which event we wanted to host um so this year we went with the PG of Alberta Championship which is the major it’s opened to all the categories for our PG of Alberta um registration wise it’s as big as a field as I’ve seen since uh in a long time so you know if we get 120 to 130 players out here that’s uh that’s a huge win yeah Jeff and I love to see the score course um we we don’t we don’t set it up to beat everybody um it it’s such a challenging industry to keep your game sharp and especially for some of the professionals that are new um you know we don’t want to scare them away from events so we’re going to set the course up we want we want everybody to enjoy themselves so that they’re not going to beat themselves up on the course uh the venue itself it’s designed to kind of expedite traffic quickly and if you happen to have an errant shot you can usually find your golf ball in our trees and more importantly hit it forwards and not have to go backwards or sideways or back to the te because you don’t you might not find it uh it’s a very generous golf course if you happen to be off a bit um but with the strength of our PG of Alberta and how many players you’ve got right now that are just that they’re at such a great level of competition um with that number of players like I we want to see somebody that could be teeing off you know an hour and a half before the leaders on the second day put a good run on it because our our front nine is where that huge scoring opportunity is and someone could go out and shoot a 30 or 31 on the front line on the second day and kind of come out of nowhere um so yeah it may not come down to that last group last year in the assistant Championship it certainly came down to the the final two groups after the the nine holes of the second day it was for sure down to just the the last group but we’re really hoping this year that that last hour to 75 minutes of tea times could produce could produce the winner on the on the two-day event joining us on the VIP Golf Show presented by ENT Roof Systems is Rob James head golf professional at the Stony plane Golf Club you know you guys have been well known for years of having absolutely fabulous greens but what can golfers expect when they come to Stony because you’re more than just great greens too aren’t you we really are yeah we’ve done a fair bit of work on the fairways the last little bit um so there’s been some significant Improvement on that drainage work as well for the last few years there’s been a ton of work on the drainage so we actually move a lot of water across the property from the neighboring communities um so when we get a rainstorm it’s not just the rain that falls on the golf course we’re getting water pushed across from the neighboring communities um so the drainage work has been great to expedite that process get the water off the property uh Fairway Improvement as well allows us to get our our our Fairways in good shape after those storms um you know eight nine years ago when we got here I I hate I used to say you could spit on the fairways and it would be a flood and and it was really challenging because you’d have to close it uh for cart traffic and and or have cart path restrictions for so many days uh we’re seeing now that when we have those really big intense storms where you get that large volume in a short amount of time um it drains so fast we can wake up the next morning there may be just a couple holes that we have to limit the cart path traffic to um but we haven’t had to do full day closures where you have to walk um I think it might have been 2019 there was a good stretch where we were open but we couldn’t have carts for seven or eight days at a time after those big storms um so fery Improvement drainage as well our sand traps are amazing out here I you know I know I’m a bit of a homer being the head pro out here but for a public golf course it’s I think we have the best some of the best bunkers in the province um it’s if you you have a reasonably good bunker technique you can be a very good sand player out here um so it’s it’s it’s really good uh pace of playwise I worked yesterday on a Saturday it was a gorgeous day out there um we are starting our mornings off with just a you know that seven eight minute tea times for a little bit but then once we do get to about 10: a. in the morning we’re we’re on the 10-minute intervals uh we learned that through you know covid and postco uh just allows us to kind of you know keep the pace of play at a very reasonable pace so you know on a busy day like yesterday we were approaching 300 players I’d like to think that all 300 of them drove home yesterday knowing that hey enjoyed ourselves we weren’t out there for five and a half hours they were out there for between 4 and 4:25 which for a public golf course on a Saturday uh it’s outstanding so we’re doing some pretty good things out here and if you’re going to drive out west we want you to enjoy yourself um you know we don’t want you to be on a golf course for five and a half hours we want you to be in the car for a half an hour and on the course for 4 and and then you can probably enjoy yourself upstairs because you’re not feeling like you uh have to get home because you’re you’re running behind if people are looking to get out and play at Stony how can they book a tea time golf Stony plan.com as soon as you’re on that main page you’re going to see some beautiful flyovers of hole number 10 uh are you a business leader looking to connect with other Business Leaders to create and accelerate business opportunities experience the extraordinary make smarter decisions faster and ultimately grow your business if so corporate connections is where you want to be email executive director Pat stride ATP stride corporate connections.com or visit corporate connections.com and a quick text to get to Dean is asking is Indian Lakes on the Enoch Reserve shut down forever it was a fantastic layout I loved it and absolutely yes Dean it is shut down forever there is no they found uned bombs yeah and they got paid a lot of money by the government to to shut it down and whatnot so it used to be a good layout it was it was a really good I believe it was the second or third hole had a bunker right in the middle of a green that was a really unique uh feature but yeah that course is definitely not going to be open ever again um unfortunately but yeah uh question of the day stalker uh all this crazy weather uh would you rather play on a big wind with no rain or rain with no wind how much rain are we talking about well not pouring rain but just a steady steady rain well steady drizzle would be all right but uh I’d still probably rather play in the wind because uh rain and your grips and your hands get slippery and you can’t hold onto the club uh when you can adjust your stance you can adjust how high you’re going to play it or how low you’re going to play it if you’re into the wind or downwind so i’ probably prefer the wind than uh than the rain well the way the start to this year was stalker when the first time that I actually played golf in good weather I was like how am I supposed to play I I don’t have four layers of clothes on a touque a wind rain suit and and I’m like how are you supposed to play golf with no clothes on and uh and no wind to deal with like it was like I I don’t know what to do but I I I hate the wind yeah absolutely hate it I’d play pick the pick a a rain with no wind any day of the week cuz the wind just golf is hard enough man you do not need the wind uh howling to make it even that much harder so I I pick the rain any day of the week although it’s neither is fun neither is fun but especially what we were getting was cold rain and wind all the same time and like this this is absolutely no fun week after week yeah but hopefully hopefully we’re done cuz we’ve had four days in a row have been pretty spectacular yeah so yeah all good uh the local events what went on for local events this week’s ster quite a bit there was the maple E4 junior golf tour stop at Stony plane uh in the u15 girls evanson’s Ry D 14 chart 7679 to win by eight over evanson’s Dana who we mentioned last week’s show that she had won in olds with a 70 with five birdies and one by 15 so uh Ry Dale beat her on the week in the peeee boys it was Oscars it was evon’s Oscar gnak by six over evon’s Harrison Wells Oscar was 11 shot 7879 in the Bantam boys sheret Park’s Jaden poic by one over Calgary’s Luca Morango in the juvenile boils mver Davis shot 7472 to beat chase lman by a stroke and finally in the Junior boys it was Spruce girls Peter hushek 16 years old with nice rounds of 7271 punctuated by a hole in one on the 14th on day on number 14 on day one of the tournament there was a prize for a new car but the car had to be come on day two of the tournament and on hole number 12 so it was so close for him to almost get uh get a car uh PG of Alberta two-day event at cougar Creek uh Calgary spear grasses Mitchell Fox won it with rounds of SE 6967 win by five over Tyler lauthier of 365 golf Kevin black of Calgary’s Redwood Meadows was third Northern Bears Adam Bruce for died along with Stony PL Jess kerson and then in the PG of Alberta Pro senior at Cardiff would you played in Murray Jeremy Pitney and Ted assay of the Evon Petroleum Club won a close Race by one stable thir point over Jamie guret and Chris Collier of pitcher but another point back in third we’re still playing Jeth cers and Paul Prefontaine I said you played with it with Kevin caras guys did very well we did yeah KK started off like KK can through the first three holes he was I think he was triple triple double and then he got hot he went birdie net eagle paret birdie paret birdie paret birdie and that got us a little roll I think we finished tied for six in the event so that was a lot of fun KK played his best game of the year uh that and I play go with them every Sunday and boy oh boy he he was good just striping the ball you would have not been happy if you were playing him for money that day I don’t think no I don’t think so it sounds like it yeah and yeah he carried me his back was probably a little sore I made a I made a key birdie late in the round and you know hung in there early when he was okay so I mean I played okay but nothing nothing special a couple of bad holes but yeah KK was uh KK was hot it was fun and that’s it for local events this week that’s it yeah all right what about hole in ones this week stalker uh Bruce Hardy you can find at Glendale at two holes in one Glendale and Dorchester and uh I don’t know if there was any other holes in ones or not I can’t quite remember you can well Zach can can you play a clip from last week’s show for us what I said but I want another one today Sunday Sunday match that’d be a fun day to get a that be good one to get one okay so last week on the show you had asked me about hole and ones and I said I’m due I think today’s the day and oh my God Stalker unbelievable unbelievable I got a hole in one last Sunday yeah on in the Sunday match like that’s unbelievable that we were talking about it in the morning and I said today the day and you know so I I step up on the eighth hole of the wrench I just birdi the seventh hole but piery did too and so he actually had honors and I said to curious I said piery and whizzard they’re Lolly gagging over by their their Club so I said I’m just going to hit and it was a howling wind behind us 167 yards I grabbed my eight iron and as soon as I hit I’m like oh I hit that pretty good and it’s just tracking at the at the hole and I’m like oh this is pretty good and then like as it was coming down the ball just disappeared and did you jug it yeah it just straight in a hole and I said to the guys I think that’s in the hole and piery goes that is in the hole and now right after that both of them say they didn’t say it but I thought I heard someone say I don’t know so I’m like I got to know so I threw my club down on the ground and I sprinted up to the green oh yeah and as soon sure enough there it was in the green in the hole and I just start going like yeah and then the guys on the t- box started screaming and then I ran back to the T boox we were all high-fiving and hugging everything like that and then KK took a video of me walking up to the hole and and getting my ball out of the hole and uh you know so I ended up almost hold it out on my second shot a 92 but yeah so I ended up I was 32 on the front nine with the hole in one in this howling wind but Adam had called the clubh I don’t drink on the golf course but Adam had a bottle of wine delivered to the ninth tea box and start so I ended up 39 in the back but it didn’t matter anymore it was a little too much wine yeah it was all good though but you know that’s just fun I was so happy to do it with Kevin and Adam and Sean the guys I play with pretty much every Sunday and and uh yeah like but just so crazy that I called it I know it amazing so that’s my third of my life now but 31 years between number two and number three so hope I don’t have to wait that long again but uh anyways yeah a lot of fun uh no doubt about that uh so how about you what did you get up to for golf this week I didn’t get any hole in ones uh played Victoria as usual and then played the Legends and I got to say the greens on the Old Hickory nine at the Legends were just fantastic they’re as good as any I’ve seen and uh traditions and the Champions n are pretty good too but not as good as Old Hickory yeah so Lions does a good job out it Legends that’s for sure with three nines to play from it’s uh lots of openings well it was better weather you only played twice I I’m expecting like a week where you get like six in stalker I know me too it might be coming though it’s coming so any plans for this week what do you got going on this week to nothing uh nothing stamped down yet uh we’re going to play Victoria on Wednesday and then uh play somewhere else on Thursday Thursday okay well I’ve got my Sunday match today uh and then on Wednesday I’m playing in the proam of the PGA Americas tour at Northern bear on Wednesday so excited to get out there and and play Northern bear and see see their setup see how they got got uh everything set up and and uh you know play play in the proam that’ll be a lot of a lot of fun looking forward to that and then I’m actually going away to ster for a couple days my wife’s done at school my son’s done at school so we’re going to go see my parents for a couple days yeah we’ll see maybe we’ll we’ll uh let my parents take care of Luke for a little while and Jess and I will go play Old stetler for golf course for nine holes or something well we’ll see yeah you don’t hear much about that golf course but it’s good well no the stetler golf and country club where I grew up playing oh I I don’t like fee back I wouldn’t go play there really yeah I don’t like it oh I liked it last time I played it really there’s too much blind stuff you can’t see anything there’s no pictures that show you where to go I don’t know but the stetler golf club in town I mean it’s not much of a golf course but it’s where I grew up so was pretty special okay yeah I I like that a lot but uh let’s talk a little US Open Bryson D Shambo yeah what about Brewer wow that’s going to be remembered forever as Rory’s colaps two three-footer and one on 18 which would have cost him a shot of the playoff one of those putts though and one of them looked like it was pretty straight the other one I mean it it snapped on them I that was not an easy putt no uh it was 3et but it was three feet that broke two feet in the three feet so I mean that was a that was a really tough putt but I I heard some stat that he’ made like 497 puts in a row of that distance so I think that speaks a lot to the pressure of winning winning is not easy and for Rory sure he’s won a lot of events but Major’s a different level and for him to go 10 years a player of Rory M’s Caliber Caliber to go 10 years without winning and to miss those two putts says a lot about the pressure that he feels to win because he doesn’t miss those no and he did no it takes away a little bit away from Bryson D Shambo that’s a 55 Yard bunker shot on 18 one of the best shots in the history of major championship golf that shot is not easy that’s the hardest shot in golf shot and don’t practice it very much either no like like that was unbelievable and under that pressure to hit that difficult shot as close as he did unbelievable and so what a great tourament was a great tournament it was yeah and and you know D Shambo again he all the social media we saw here sticking around signing autographs aogs after the round again the guy we talked about a little bit last week he has turned around the whole way people think about him and he is he’s the star of golf right now and he’s in Liv and it sucks yeah like this is more pressure now on the PGA to make something happen because live with Bryson is going to turn around because as good as Scotty sheffler is he doesn’t have the personality of D Shambo and the fans aren’t engaging on him like they do on Bryson and oo it’s not good for the PJ tour right now to have the Superstar of golf in live yeah yeah you got Scotty Sheffer and he’s a wonderful golfer of course he wins all the time but he has no Personality yeah so we’ll see how that goes on the other side of the break we are going to preview the PGA Tour America’s tournament at Northern bear next week with tournament director Darcy anck stay with us this is question this week how many teams are there on the Liv golf tour how many teams are there on the Liv golf tour and as a bonus question name any player on the league leading Crushers now I’m actually stunned that you came up with this question I it’s fabulous question because I don’t I wouldn’t have had a clue no me either but uh something I wondered about if Josh about golf but we don’t if Josh Clen from CTV is what what listening right now he will know the answer to the question but uh we’ll see so text in to 780 218 9999 how many teams play in the live golf tour and right now we are going to be joined by Darcy anic turn tournament director of the PGA Tour Americas tournament coming up this week at the northern Bear Golf Club Darcy how are you this morning I’m great thanks so much yeah well you look like you’re at Northern Bear right now yeah we are we’ve been uh we’ve been on site for almost a week and a half just leading in and uh getting everything set up from our tents and Sky Suites and all the rest so well with the fire that destroyed the clubhouse at Northern bear this winter will obviously have an effect on the event did you consider moving the event to a different course and with the decision to stay at the bear how will the loss of the facility impact the event you know it was uh obviously really devastating for the community and uh and for Northern bear to lose the club and you know the uh the reality is around a PGA Tour event there’s a lot of restrictions around the length of the course that we need the type of facilities from practice Etc so it’s normally we would you know plan three to five years in advance on a location let alone um you know trying to to plan three to five months out and so Northern bear I mean that the track itself is fantastic and uh they’ve been a tremendous partner and and we really wanted to stay there ATB came very strong as well as the tour and said you know what if there’s any way we can make it happen um we’d love to stay at Northern bear so it you know it required obviously some temporary facilities being brought in from northern Bears perspective for for their operations which they had to do anyways and then we bring out and build out quite a few we brought in eight trailers and uh we build a big sky Suite on 18 and our birdie bar behind me and um so we feel with all those other temporary facilities that we bring in that we can put on a great event strong field as usual I expect uh who are some of the players you’re expecting to be at the top of the leader board this week well you know Matthew Anderson who won the um the ECP Brazil open he’s number one on the fortnet Cup points um and Michael Brennan he uh he was actually number 12 on the um 2024 PJ tun tour university ranking um also another great pick there’s a couple of guys that played in the US Open and um Neil Shipley who who just made his professional debut in Victoria um we were expecting him but he actually got an exemption into the rocket mortgage um next week so he’s going to ZIP down there but um we’ve got Joey uh V and Matthew mavin and Freddy uh catchup who also played in the US Open who uh who would be fantastic and then of course we have some someone like Will Holland local here who’s making his professional debut from Edmonton I say it all the time that people have no idea how good the players are on your tour no idea at all you could take five players from your tour put put them on the PGA tour and theyd blend right in absolutely the the quality and it just keeps getting better and better and this year of course combining the Latin American tour with Canada and making it PJ tour Americans we’re finding that the the the field is even stronger than it was last year which is hard to believe but they they just keep getting better and better and you’re right they could you could just take them and transfer them on and that’s why we’re seing so many of our alumni uh playing so well on the PJ tour joining us on the VIP off show presented by Ardent Roof Systems is Darcy enck with the PGA Tour America’s event at Northern bear next week uh you’re doing the MGT Future Stars event leading up to the tournament at Northern bear share the share the details on that event that’s pretty special isn’t it yeah it is so we had 18 Juniors from across Canada qualify and they’re playing a 36 hole event so they’re actually on the course right now um trying to battle it out for 36 holes and the the winner of this event is actually going to earn an exemption to play in the event uh so that’s pretty cool experience and so we wanted to give them really the tour experience because this is really building that next generation of players so they’re out there they have caddies they have walking scores all of our t- signages up our grandstands are up so it it feels like a Tour event which is an experience that a lot of these Juniors don’t get at this stage uh so it opens her eyes and gives them a glimpse into what’s to come there’s a Monday qualifier for your event uh at the links uh last opportunity for eight players to get into the tournament what’s the quality of players that’ll be competing in that trying to get a spot yeah we we have 115 people that are trying to qualify for that it’s it’s our highest we’ve ever had um we’ve got some of the tour guys who you know have conditional status and just didn’t get into the F this week there is going to be some uh great scores that are going to come out of that and we’ve got lots of locals that have entered as well so it it’ll be a battle for sure and uh we’re excited to see who’s going to who’s going to farewell from there and and be here this week are there other local players in the event you mentioned one one local making his Pro debut but any other eonian in the field he is the only edmontonian um having said that we have um uh Brenda McDougall from from Calgary so we we do have some other albertans that are in the field as well and um I suspect that you may see a couple that will maybe peek through from the um uh the qualifier so um we’re we’re keeping our fingers crossed that they’re going to uh to get in here and uh it’s such a such a difficult process to uh to get in but Alberta’s got some tremendous players and and we’re expecting to see them here so Darcy talk about The Fan Experience during the week and what people can expect if they make their way to Northern Bear yeah well you know obviously it’s a different look when you pull into uh into Northern bear without the clubhouse here it’s flattened um but they’ll see the temporary facilities there Northern bear has done a great job of of uh preparing the grounds and so there’s an area for um for them to be able to get uh obviously bite to eat and relax on their uh they’ve got a a patio Outdoors that they set up we have behind us the slan birdie bar which is another opportunity for a little upgraded experience it overlooks the ninth and 18th green uh we have our corporate Suite here that uh we’ll be hosting a lot of our corporate Partners but what I think what’s unique about the event is how close you can get to the players here like you can right up aside them see how incredible they are watch their shop making um you can go hang out on the Range and and again watch them practice there it’s a great setup and layout um and not feel too crowded when you uh when you’re on the on the grounds here no you get to go like as you say right very close to the player and you can hear the conversations between the player and the caddy it’s great yeah absolutely joining us on the VIP golf show is Darcy enck with the PGA Tour America’s event at Northern bear there is a fundraising component to the event as well who are you supporting and how are you raising money for that we have a youth on course that um provides kids between six and 18 the opportunity to play golf for $5 so it really opens that window to any barrier to entry and Northern bear is one of those hosts um where you can play uh this amazing course for $ five dollar yeah and uh so all the gate admission will go to youth on course plus we are running a 5050 and we also have an online auction that um we’re giving away two tickets to the uh the President’s Cup which is obviously coming up here in Montreal and we have um four passes to the waste management open and to the players down in Florida so those are just a few of the items I guess that will probably Peak some golfers interest um and uh and create some excitement and obviously some Goodwill and some great fundraising and one other piece is for every birdie that’s made here on the 18th green ATB is going to donate $500 uh to youth on course so it’s another great way to to put some some money in the coffers there for uh helping these kids get access to the courses you still looking for any help with the tournament like caddies yeah you know what we won’t know the final caddy um crew that’s coming from Victoria which is the event before us here but we suspect there may be a couple more caddies um that we we could um utilize as well as some Billet families um we have you know a lot of players that are that are traveling and been traveling for a long time and if they live within about a 30 kilometer or sorry a 30 um minute uh commute uh they might be a great candidate to uh to get a Billet um to stay with them and it’s a great experience to kind of get to know them before they perhaps are playing on the PJ tour so great experience so Darcy I’m playing in the proam there on Wednesday what should I expect there what’s what’s happening on Wednesday yeah we have ah we’ve got a great morning wave and an afternoon wave as well and uh we have a awesome gifting area that’s set up from our our friends at Adidas and going to outfit people with their clothing package and get fitted for shoes um we’re giving you the the tour experience with starters on the first te and 10th T um you’ll be able to play the course like the players uh are going to see it and uh we’ve got I don’t want to give away all the fun but we’ve got some uh some fun video that we’re doing on uh 18 and uh we’re going to be doing all our hosting here in the sky Suite on the 18th green and have a meal for you before and after after the event so it should be a it should be a really great uh great day well Darcy I’m not young anymore I hope I’m not playing from the same te’s they are in the tournament though no you’re not you’re okay but you’ll be able to see your pro playing from back there and uh we we’ll move you up a little bit to it’s a long this when you stretch this out it’s you know 7,000 plus yards here yeah which is one of the longest that we have which is a great test for the players and they love to grab their driver and bust it out here so it’ll be a great day you going play for the red teas I’m not playing 7,000 yards anymore well uh Darcy if people are looking to get out there uh to buy some tickets to watch or if they can help with being a Billet family or be a caddy how uh how can they get in touch with how do they how do they do that what do they need to do they can just go on to our website at ATB classic.com and they’ll find all the information there on um either being a caddy a Billet or if they want to reserve their tickets now and we there’s even how to get there where to park all those details are on the site and we’d love toh see them out here and uh cheer on these guys well it sounds like you’ve been really busy but our question of the week on the show is when you were playing golf with this crazy weather we’ve had would you rather play on a big wind day with no rain or a day with with rain but no wind well you know what I’m a Saskatchewan girl uh so I probably would take the wind because grew up playing in Wind um but I’ve done I’ve had to do both and uh but yeah I I take the wind I guess all right well thanks so much for uh taking the time away I know you’re crazy busy right now looking forward to seeing you on Wednesday out at the at the tournament and and good luck with everything uh it’s a big
