A bonus pod this week, we’ve been getting so many questions from you that we can’t fit them all in the weekly podcast, so from time to time we’ll do a bonus pod ripping through a few questions.
Seven questions on this bonus Q&A pod.
Peter asks for an update on the development of 7 Mile Beach Golf Club in Hobart.
Paul wants to find out what reasonable green fees are on public courses, he reckons he’s paying a bit much at the moment.
Darren has a scenario that he puts to Nick and Mark involving Scottie Scheffler vs a 15 Handicapper.
Matt from Barwon Heads has a whack for Nick, we read it out, and Nick responds.
Scott asks the boys about how Brett Coletta and Daniel Gale would be preparing for the DP World Tour
Steve, our mate at Rich Rivers Golf Club, has a question on tight driving holes.
And we wrap with a suggestion for a guest for the pod from KR. Marko likes this one.
Keep the feedback and questions and comments coming, we love it.

Hearn they’ll help you play your best and the watch my numbers app play smarter and use your data now a bonus episode of talk birie to me here’s Nick oarn and Mark Allen so I am wrapped about this bonus that we’re doing this week because it gets our family involved and that is the talk birdie to me family feedback bonus pod Dan this is your brainchild and I love it well we we’ve getting so much feedback at the moment which we love you can email it you can put it on socials you can leave a voicemail message for us how you do the voice message again you go to the website talk birdy.com about halfway down there a little button that says record or hit record or something like that you can do it on your phone you you you go to the side on your phone hit record on the phone and it opens up you just say who you are where you from did you know we had a website Nick I did I actually didn’t know that you didn’t know that we had it for a year and a half t.c. now the first bit of feedback now these these pieces of feedback the consistency through here is are all questions for you guys that you need to spend a couple minutes answering okay first one is a voicemail you have one new voicemail new message hey guys Peter here I just wondering if you got any intel on Seven Mile Beach in Hobart I understand they’re going to open 11 holes this year and then the rest early next year but there’s nothing on their website and I know nothing else and I’m hoping one of you to do thanks guys well it’s a great question Pete and I’m excited about this joint now I’ve been following along um and MADD Goan does all the tweets and one of the two goods takes a lot of the pictures very famous name in golf the two good because uh way back when Peter to good and Peter Thompson won the Eisenhower cup used to be called something else I think but they won it a million years ago together too good wasn’t he well that’s exactly right and when you go to Roy Hobart you just see two good two good two good on the club champion Le like there’s there’s a stack of them anyway he’s taking some of the pictures down there I’m hearing they are going to open up at the end of this year U the vze is a very well-known architect but I was always told I I used to swap books a little bit with M Goen when we were on tour I used to like him he’s a great great a Great Character very cerebral thinker we would we we’d swap books and you know just catch up with each other but he he mentioned this land to me many years ago um and you know I forgot about it until I saw it happen again but I’ve got a feeling that this golf course uh in the position it’s in is going to be the big ticket down there at in tazzy uh the pitches look amazing uh I I do think you may well be right that 12 holes May well be opened at then of the year I thought they were on track for 18 but that sounds about right to me because golf course you know quite often if you’re going to do it right it does take more time than they hope um and there’s going to be two there’s going to be 7 Mile Beach and 5 Mile Beach but it’s in a position that’s not quite as windy as King Island okay and the airport right yeah it’s close to the airport so you’ll be able to catch a big plane down you might even be able to stay at the casino if you want I mean I’m sure they going to put some kind of accommodation in uh but Pete I’m I’m more excited about this one than I was about the other two and the other two well some people say is the best course in the country but others don’t okay next bit of feedback with a question here this is from Paul hello guys I started playing three years ago looking at the public golf courses list it’s a 150 bucks a round to play at Andrew’s beach with a cart is this too expensive for a good public course you thoughts please on costing for public courses and what may or may not be a fair price thank you that is it’s a good question is Andrew’s Beach $150 with a golf cart yeah is this on it must be on the weekend uh or public holiday maybe cuz that does seem so it’s 150 for two for two players with golf cart well he hasn’t said thatf green yeah if it’s one Green fee with a golf cart that that’s a bit much you talk and I’ll get on the website is a very good golf course I’ve been down there I’ve always enjoyed it but public golf courses if if you’re getting over the $80 Mark I think on a Green fee that’s starting to get up there but at the same time they’ve obviously got a business to run and and uh there are expenses involved and things like that so but a golf cart what’s a golf cart cost $30 $40 for around a golf these days if I was the pro it would be 50 bucks these days if you got a good card I mean everyone wants a good card you want if you got a good cart with uh and the cart’s a bit less than that so so if if you’ve got if you got a good cart and it has a GPS in it and it’s got something that will cover your clubs and it’s got nice comfy seats and it’s modern and it’s quiet and all the rest of it I’d happily pay $25 and share that cart so a $50 cart oh sorry I see what you mean yeah you’re sharing it yep gotcha um I’m just having a look at some green fees view green fees here we go read the book s Andre’s Beach 18 holes group bookings uh it’s $100 18 holes $100 $5 H so $105 plus $45 gets you the cart so in actual fact it’s it’s a $45 cart by the looks of it so it’s about per person be 122 whatever yeah well see s Andrew’s Beach it’s a Tom do design golf course you’re going high really it’s it’s always well it doesn’t have a clubhouse yet now that’s the other thing yeah I understand doesn’t have a range yeah doesn’t have a range doesn’t have a club house it’s probably a bit exy but it is in saying that I love the joint I I absolutely love it and I wholeheartedly recommend if you haven’t played it to get down there put on the list to play because it is a beauty so to answer Paul’s question you guys think 150 might be just a tad on the Steep side little bit what do you reckon for a just a good course uh you should be looking at pain a good public course good public course uh a really something great uh bucks and that includes a cart and if that’s if you’re playing with a mate so you pay $100 each and you’re sharing a cart on something special no worries or 80 bucks each if you’re just walking around yeah okay next question that’s on a very good golf course yeah it’s on a very that’s if you run a mill run-of-the-mill you know public course probably $30 $40 gr fee something yeah 25 bucks okay next question from Darren Nick and Mark is this worthy of discussion I think it is how would a med go listen carefully to this this is scenario he’s put here how would a medium handicap player off say around 15 go playing against Scotty Sheffer around austa if the Amer started every hole on the greens but with the most difficult putts on every Green IC and Chef still wins what do you guys think no I reckon the am wins well well he’s got three p yeah he can three every Green if they’re in tournament conditions and you’re putting in the tough you put him in the toughest spot on each green I would say he’s going to mostly for put let’s let’s just say it’s the traditional Sunday pins okay and you you you so for in I go with shefer you going to go with I’m going with a Sheffer because what’s going to happen is the Amer is going to putt it off a couple of greens and he’s going to make eight or seven may go into the water on 15 or something like that hang on it’s scary how quick and how much slers on those GRE I’m just think uh first yeah you could put him in a tough spot on first if you put him at the even if you put him at the front on on one the pins at the back not going to get it up going to yeah probably forut the first the second you’d go really way wide I’m not going to go through green but they’re going to forut most greens Mark you know what I reckon if you put him if you put that 15 marker in a bunker on every hole and Scotty Sheffer was playing then shot Scotty Sheffer streets past him yeah well sheffer’s going to shoot say 68 yeah four under par yeah the am is going to have more than have a lot of GNA have a lot of fives and a lot of fours from a bunker it’s a good question it is a good question be it would be a very good experiment somewhere it depends on how quick the greens are we’ll say that yeah I’ll tell you what you know where they could do that if the Australian opens at Royal Melbourne again one year o to do that experiment with somebody with you could you know it be funny if we say say as an example we don’t know where it is the the Aussie opens at Kingston Heath for example this year I think we should do something about we should try it we should try 15 marker and put them in the well you know the the greens and so they’re going to get some good lies some down slopes you know on 15 we’re going to put them in big berther on the left hey imagine how many puts if they’ have done at the Victoria Golf Club back in 2001 so you’re asking me whether a 15 Market could break par at Kingston Heath if we just put it in a tough spot around the green we’re talking four parts or better a hole at at at when they’re running 13 when they’re running I don’t think they’d shoot 72 yeah there you go answers your question y okay there you go now I know this is a bonus feedback pod uh but we do have one pretty reasonable whack which uh we’ll read out after the turn all right [Music] thanks for listening to talk birdie to me and if you’re up for it we’d love you to subscribe rate and share the podcast wherever you listen and thanks to our great Partners who make the show possible ping they’ll help you play your best watch my numbers the most powerful databased golf app in the world and the golf clearance outlet they beat everyone’s prices now back to Nick oarn and Mark Allen okay back to our bonus pod uh this is a dealing with feedback only except for the moment which is well it is feedback but it’s a bit of a whack at the same time it’s a whack feedback it’s a whack feedback this please tell me they’re whack and Bambi over there they are whack and Bambi so good this is from Matt bring it on it’s a little bit of a long one I’m going to read the whole thing for I think I think it’s worthwhile good day Nick I thoroughly enjoy your books and I am in awe of your playing ability and your record however Oh I thought it’ be a b however means business please stay in your lane when it comes to course reviews oh your review of PK last week by saying it was in great condition but some greens need smoothing out is SAR suggesting highly reads a good footy player cuz he wears nice boots but he should handball more if that’s the only feedback you can provide for a worldclass facility such as PK I think you should avoid traveling to bar boal and lost farm at all costs as The Greens at both of those courses are extremely fun to play on and often the golfer can choose to aim their parts well away from the hole in order to get the ball close I’ve played both PK courses I love how wide the fairways are if I want to play safe off the or how I could take on a hazard to try and get a better angle for my next shot onto the green to me and many others who look further into courses than just how green the grass is the greens are fabulous and to flatten them out would be a travesty I look forward to your next review all the best Matt from bwin heads holy nice holy get in there Matt he he he’s not from Golf Digest top 100 is he I don’t know but he has absolutely lined you up yeah that’s good good on him too well thanks Matt for that uh to that feedback constructive criticism in my defense I think at the time I said I’d just come off the golf course and said it was in great condition and I love the facility so you didn’t have much time I didn’t but if we want to go into the whole aspect of course design I’m absolutely happy to say how wide it is off the tea as you mentioned you’ve got to create the angles uh the bunkering is world class uh the clubhouse is amazing range facilities the whole thing it’s it’s unbelievable however the first hole on the North I’ve hit a wed shot or a 99 up to the back edge of that green it didn’t come off the front did it it came off the front 50 m thank you very much on the so you bad taste in your mouth on the first little bit yeah it didn’t happen the other day but it has happened before the the bank at the back of the first green it needs to be flattened out in my opinion yeah uh the third hole the power five the back of that it’s very very steep back there if you go along you’ve got absolutely no chance it just needs to be soften at all and that’s all I was referring to so Matt I really appreciate you listening to the podcast and giving me your opinions however I’m going to you know just defend myself a little bit here but and my Lane is you know it is narrow at times but uh I will go down the course review uh Lane every now and then let me play Devil’s Advocate just for a second I know you played the prov1x and that’s the ball that spins more than the Prov V1 maybe you should be changing ball so your ball so you’re hitting the ball so well you just fizzing off all these big slopes I didn’t Fizz it that’s the thing it just rolled up the back and it came all the way back up the front a design thank you for the feedback man one of the great things about this podcast and you boys I will say this is when someone gives us a wake we’re really happy to read it that that’s right no problem which I think is great where does Mark Matt plays golf by the bow heads well he’s he’s from Bowen heads I don’t know whether he’s playing 30 heads I haven’t actually played Bowen heads I might have to come down there and maybe review that have you not played bow heads no I was down there I was down there for the Vic open one year I only played the first five and that was it oh no let’s let’s do that need to do that let’s do that all right Scott fah has written in Scott has said hey guys love the Pod keeps me entertained and informed whilst on my daily walks I’d love to hear what the two Aussie guys who are in the top three in the order of Merit Daniel Gil and Brett keter are doing to prepare for the DP World Tour what their plans are it might be good to hear from both of them about their future plans I’m looking forward to hearing both of them keeping the Aussie flag flying on the overseas tour keep up the good work okay so he just wants to as a bonus pod to get in touch with some of these boys overseas yeah it’s a good idea yeah I wouldn’t mind knowing I mean yeah it’s funny um there’s a couple Lads at Kingston Heath they’re very good players Andre LTE and Max Charles Max Charles lost in the playoff at the tour School this year uh to get his card and Andre LTE is thereabouts the hardest thing for them at the moment is actually preparing themselves for tournaments and they don’t know when they’re getting in it’s a really hard thing to do my my advice to everybody in that situation is the last thing you want to do is become a good practicer you don’t want to hit ball after ball after ball after ball after ball in the range when you don’t know when you’re going to get into your next tournament what you want to become in this game is a very good player and I would suggest to anybody who has a long time off before they don’t know you know when they’re going to be playing next like like these two because they they don’t get in every week I suggest to them to practice on the golf course I I think it’s really important because you can get you can practice things on the driving range and you can become Ben Hogan on the driving range practicing one thing you take it out in the golf course it just doesn’t work you know the fields just aren’t quite there but if you are practicing things that work on the golf course that’s a different ball game and you can be and you can actually get away with long breaks in between tournament starts Brit and Daniel could go weeks without playing a tournament correct that is correct yeah given the category and and everything that they that they get off the uh the rankings they get shuffled down and sometimes these guys they have to go back to the challenge tour and and play those events rather than the main tour and things like that so yeah you spot on with that I Baker Finch made a good call on the commentary the other day was it finchy I can’t remember but um Scotty Sheffer had to make two fours on the last two holes and he might have quoted something like Peter Thompson always said just play the last four holes is what Peter Thompson used to say and figure out how to par the last four holes because you’re going to have to do that one day to win a golf tournament and in that case it was the last two holes yeah it’s very important and I know in my silly 15 little career quite often I got trapped because i’ it was long breaks I’d work something out on the driving range that felt fantastic and I get in the tournament it just didn’t work I was you know before a big tournament and I used to play half decent in the bigger ones for some reason in this country I would always work work out something the week before the tournament the week before on the golf course and practice that so whatever works on the course don’t do don’t practice things that work on the driving range practice things at work on the course I know that sounds ridiculously simple but it’s a trap for young players it is yeah okay so focusing on feedback in this bonus pod today this one from Steve loer who we spoke to a couple of weeks ago last week I think Steve’s from Rich Rivers Golf Club he’s the director up there one of the directors up there hey boys I was following my club’s team around in a pennant final last weekend at Kahuna Golf Club and I thought you could speak at some point about the tightest driving holes in Australia that you know I know that you did short holes not too long ago the boys played at Kahuna Golf Club home of Stuart applebe and also home to some outstanding players it’s not hard to see why they were so good when you see the shot making required to play this golf course the two-hole stretch of six and seven are two great nominations yeah okay have you ever played Kahuna I haven’t no I I’ve played it once uh and I’m saying like 30 years ago all I can remember is that the drive driveway the clubhouse is right in the middle of the property and the driveway goes across a couple of holes I can’t remember it being tied I can’t remember any holes the one course I in recent memory that did look tight was warle where they played the Super Sixers you and I were commentating yeah true and that’s where uh Cameron Percy who came third this week on the Champions States that’s where he grew up playing okay they were some of the tightest holes I’ve seen yeah um if if you’re going to hit a driver I remember Kum had one the 12th H the that was a a lot of guys cool suited me cuz I could hit driver everywhere cuz I like to shape it and work it but that one was a 123 with two really tough driving hes I hated hitting Drive I felt like you had to cuz it was a half five and if I hit three would I couldn’t get there in two with an nine so I didn’t want to three-wood from the top of that hill so I always felt like I was forced to try to hit driver off that hole so the key on that hole was to hit it low cuz if you hit it left there was a camber kicking it back right hit it right there was a camber kicking it left if he took it up in the air well then it missed and it wasn’t good so that’s that’s a really tight hole and back in the old Australian Master’s days uh the 7th hole 7 at hunting 7 at hunting when they had the three bushes on the left and the Tea Tree on the right there was a two iron off that hole every single time yeah last bit of feedback on this bonus pod which is more a suggestion for Content down the track as well this is from KR KR has said Marco could you please get Wayne radar Riley on the show I’d love to I remember a time in the locker room during the 1990 Johnny Walker classic at Royal Melbourne when Colin Montgomery and radar nearly came to blows I think Monty even Shar a tear over that incident rough Justice if you ask me uh yeah look radar doesn’t mess around um if you don’t like you you’ll know about it uh very very quickly uh I would love to get him on as a bonus podcast can I tell you one story please please so um my very first tournament as a professional golfer was in 1990 it was at tiangi Golf Club in New Zealand which is Alison McKenzie design Great Golf Course on the 72nd hole I actually h a wedge oh um and finished eighth in the tournament and honestly I thought I was going to finish in the top 10 the rest of my life in here with movie stars I called Mom and said hey Mom they’re giving money away here on the austral Asian door this is this is a joke anyway um Wayne Riley won that tournament he stood on that 72nd hole with about a 12sh shot lead and he told his caddy that that hole is a three wood in the wedge right he wanted the hit wedge three with he wanted to do the mo Norman yeah he wanted to do a mo Norman he was so far in front and his caddy fought him on the 72nd T and and made him not do it he was determined he was going to hit a wedge in the three-wood he never he didn’t do it that would have been funny to watch but that was my you know I I loved radar when when he came to Australia when when he came to Victoria when I was a young man I used to go and follow him I I just I don’t know there was something about radar that I loved and I would follow him everywhere and he was a good player unbelievable ball Striker yeah he he took at and I under our wing our first year in Europe where he he basically uh I think we were living in Virginia water just renting a place and he said oh come and have dinner with us and all this and we went around and and did all that and he was saying look you don’t want to go there this is where you want to stay and he just gave us these little tidbits that which for a rookie Pro that’s what you’re wanting out of out of elderly Pros to give you some advice give you some help and it was amazing and there was one great story about him at Crown cier in Switzerland I don’t know heard this one on the fourth hole I think it was a par three and this was just after sevy had redone the greens we turned them all into Donald Ross Green basically made them all upside down sources so you couldn’t hold the greens perfect for S yeah exactly so and Radars hit this shot into the PA three and as it’s in the air he’s yelled out I won’t say exactly what he yelled at cuz you know what his language is like but he said see if you can stuff that one up sevy as the balls fly through the air it goes in for a hole in one and he he won like a gold bar or something like that it was one of the funniest things yeah what about it there’s a suburb in London called bagshot and that’s where all the Australians stayed they used to call it Ramsey Street y all right that’s wh everyone was um there was a pub there called panals I think it was nightclub was called pant tails and there was this Moose’s head out the front and radar used to put a lit cigarette in the moose’s mouth when he walked in so you knew he was in there if the cigarette was in in the moose’s mouth that’s the sort of BL you so he was a ripper can you put him on the list please for B podcast there’s another one we’ll put him on the list I went to a pub in Shepherd’s bush in London once and I swear I didn’t hear any accents except Australians and kywi is that right oh it’s a real little Aussie New Zealand Enclave now that’s our burnus pod with with a bunch of feedback are we’re going to do this from time to time what we got going on enjoy the
